The best areas to stay in Dubrovnik

The old town, Ploce, Pile, Lapad, Babin Kuk, and Gruz are the six main Dubrovnik areas. If you are wondering about the best area to stay in Dubrovnik, worry not! You won’t make a mistake choosing any of them, as there is no right or wrong neighborhood to stay in Dubrovnik. Which area you will choose for your accommodation in Dubrovnik comes down to your budget, travel style, and preferences.

No time to read the entire post? No worries! Here is a rundown of the best areas to stay in Dubrovnik.

  • The best area to stay in Dubrovnik for the first time –  Old Town
  • Best places to stay in Dubrovnik for couples –  Ploce
  • Where to stay in Dubrovnik on a budget –  Gruz
  • Where to stay in Dubrovnik for nightlife –  Pile  &  Old Town
  • Best neighborhood in Dubrovnik for families –  Lapad  &  Babin Kuk
  • A place to stay in Dubrovnik for beaches:  Lapad  &  Babin Kuk

The old town , packed with attractions, restaurants, bars, and crowds, is the best place to stay for first-time visitors, for those staying a short time, for a day or two, and for nightlife. When staying in the old town, you are in the heart of everything, and able to easily explore the town’s main attractions.

Pile neighborhood , along with the old town, is the best area to stay in Dubrovnik for nightlife. If you are interested in staying up late and partying until the wee hours, stay in the old town or in the Pile area. The majority of popular bars and clubs in Dubrovnik are located in these two neighborhoods. Many visitors to Dubrovnik also stay in the Pile area due to its proximity to the old town.

The Ploce neighborhood, boasting wonderful views, the finest Dubrovnik hotels, outstanding beaches, and Orsula Park – a perfect place for a romantic picnic, is a favorite place to stay in Dubrovnik for couples. Ploce is also for us the best overall area to stay in Dubrovnik. It is a quiet, residential area with a couple of top-notch 5-star hotels and villas and breathtaking views over the sea and the old town.

Lapad and Babin Kuk are perfect Dubrovnik neighborhoods for sea and beach lovers, families with children, and those in search of hotels with great facilities, entertainment, and activities.

Gruz , home to the town’s main port where cruise ships and ferries dock, is the best place to stay in Dubrovnik on a budget. This busy neighborhood with a local vibe is further away from the old town and the beaches, and it lacks charm. This makes Gruz accommodation cheaper than accommodation in other areas of Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik Neighborhood Guide

Dubrovnik’s old town is the main reason people visit Dubrovnik. However, the old town is not the only neighborhood to stay in Dubrovnik.

The city of Dubrovnik spreads north, northwest, east, and southeast of the old town. It includes various neighborhoods, out of which Old Town, Ploce, Pile, Babin Kuk, Lapad, and Gruz are the most popular.

You will find a variety of accommodation choices in each of Dubrovnik’s neighborhoods.

Dubrovnik’s old town offers an array of charming small B&Bs, hotels, and lovely apartments.

The hilly Ploce neighborhood with buildings carved into dramatic seaside cliffs offers accommodations with stunning sea and town views.

The accommodation in the Pile area consists of Airbnb, family-run rooms and guest houses, and the Hilton Imperial Hotel.

Babin Kuk, a posh suburb located on the northern part of the Lapad peninsula, is home to world-class hotels and resorts in Dubrovnik.

Lapad, a very lively neighborhood and a place that feels very local, features a great number of hotels, and vacation rentals within walking distance from the beaches.

Accommodation in the Gruz neighborhood, being a bit further from the old town and looking less polished than other Dubrovnik neighborhoods, is more affordable.

Old Town – Where to stay in Dubrovnik for the first time

A pedestrian-only old town Dubrovnik is surrounded by famed Dubrovnik defensive walls. The old town of Dubrovnik is a Unesco World Heritage Site .

Dubrovnik’s old town is small and densely packed with historical stone houses, narrow cobblestone streets, small but lively town squares, an old port, and a great number of bars, restaurants, souvenir shops, and art galleries.

People often ask us if it is better to stay in Dubrovnik’s old town or outside. The old town is fabulous and definitely, a great place to stay in Dubrovnik. If you are visiting Dubrovnik for the first time, or if you stay in Dubrovnik for a short time like a day or two, and if you prefer historical buildings over modern ones, then staying in the old town is definitely better than outside. The old town is also a good area to stay in Dubrovnik for nightlife.

You should choose to stay in Dubrovnik old town if you:

  • don’t mind paying extra for the prime location
  • can’t resist all that charm regardless of a few drawbacks
  • don’t mind some noise (from passers-by, street cleaners, bars, etc.)

  • don’t care about extra facilities like the property’s own beach, sea views, swimming pool, etc.
  • don’t have difficulties climbing the stairs as many accommodations in the old town requires that

Top 4 favorites accommodation options for Old Town Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik’s old town offers an array of charming small B&Bs, hotels, and lovely apartments.

An intimate and charming Guesthouse Forty-four features 4 spacious and modernly designed rooms with en-suite bathrooms and one studio apartment.

Comfortable, clean property in a great quiet location within the old city and a super-friendly host, makes Nije Presa Apartments one of the best places to stay in Dubrovnik’s old town.

And if you prefer to stay in small boutique hotels, both Pucic Palace and Prijeko Palace , are centrally located and housed in beautifully restored historic palaces.

Ploce is our favorite part of Dubrovnik and the best area to stay in Dubrovnik.

This neighborhood spreads east and southeast of the old town. The easter town gate, Ploce Gate, shares the same name as the area.

The hilly Ploce neighborhood with buildings carved into dramatic seaside cliffs offers accommodations with stunning sea and town views. There are also lots of stairs to climb if staying in the Ploce neighborhood, but the views are hard to beat and worth the climb.

The Ploce neighborhood is the best part of Dubrovnik to stay in if you:

  • love sea views properties
  • enjoy lovely views of Dubrovnik’s old town
  • like to be close to all the hustle and bustle but yet not amidst it
  • don’t mind a bit of uphill walking
  • need a parking

Some of the landmarks you will find in the Ploce neighborhood include Banje, St. Jakov, and Betina (or Cave) beaches,  Orsula Park, Lazareti – a former quarantine, and today’s popular music club, and a lower station for Dubrovnik cable car.

Some of our favorite Dubrovnik hotels are located in the Ploce area.

Hotel Excelsior , Dubrovnik’s landmark hotel, hosted many celebrities in its 105-year rich history.

Villa Dubrovnik , our favorite hotel in Dubrovnik, is also located in the Ploce area.

And if you are looking for the comfort of home, the Villa Leoni apartments are clean, spacious, beautifully decorated, and very close to the old town and the beach.

The Pile neighborhood starts from the Pile Gate, the western gate into Dubrovnik’s old town, and spreads toward the northwest and west of the old town.

Pile is the home of Dubrovnik’s main transport hub. A bus stop to and from the old town, the main bus stop for coach tours, and a taxi stop are right in front of the Pile Gate.

The small Pile suburb is a great place to stay mostly due to its central location and the proximity to the old town. The accommodation in the Pile area consists of Airbnb, family-run rooms and guest houses, and the Hilton Imperial Hotel.

Pile’s main landmarks include Lovrijenac Fortress, Gradac Park, and Dance Beach.

Top 3 favorites accommodation options for Pile Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik’s oldest hotel – today’s hotel Hilton Imperial – is located in the Pile neighborhood as well as many wonderful guesthouses and apartment rentals. We like Dubrovnik Finest Apartments as well as the guesthouse Villa Anica .

Other facilities include parks, coastal walks, popular beaches like Copacabana and Coral Beach Club, a variety of Dubrovnik apartments, and the only camping in Dubrovnik.

Bus no. 6 connects the Babin Kuk neighborhood with the old town. The bus runs every 15 to 20 minutes throughout the day from 5.30 to midnight. The 1-hour ticket costs 1.6 € (1.7 US$), while the daily ticket costs 4 € (4.2 US$).

You can save money on public transport as well as Dubrovnik attractions by purchasing the Dubrovnik card .

Top 3 favorites accommodation options for Babin Kuk Dubrovnik

Stay in the Valamar Collection Dubrovnik President Hotel if you look for a perfect beach hotel in Dubrovnik. Spacious, modern rooms, splendid sea views, and a great breakfast draw visitors to choose the Hotel Royal Neptun for their stay in Dubrovnik. Lots of family houses and apartment blocks built in the 1970s make part of the Lapad setting. Today many are transformed into apartments and rooms to rent.

A few pebbly beaches aside, the coast here is mostly rocky. Lapad is a great area to stay in Dubrovnik for families with children.

Top 3 favorites accommodation options for Lapad Dubrovnik

Elegant and stylish rooms, a lovely seafront location, and friendly staff make travelers choose the Hotel Kompas for their stay in Dubrovnik.

Carved into a 30 m high cliff, Hotel Bellevue boasts spectacular sea views, direct beach access, and a lovely breakfast room overlooking the sea.

A choice of 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments in a luxury residence with onsite cinema, grocery store, and parking located only 30 m from Sunset Beach in the Dubrovnik Lapad area, make L’Orangerie a great place to stay for those looking for space and comfort.

Should you stay in Lapad or Old Town?

The most common question visitors to Dubrovnik ask is whether they should stay in Lapad or Old Town as both places offer lots of accommodation options, and seem equally popular.

Simply said, you should stay in the old town if you prefer to stay within small hotels and cozy Airbnbs located in historical buildings and medieval palaces full of old-world charm.

Gruz neighborhood, located in a bay of the same name, is home to Dubrovnik port, a central bus station, and an open-air farmers and fish market.

Gruz port is a place where the majority of cruise ship passengers arrive in Dubrovnik, and also a place to catch a ferry to nearby islands.

Some of our favorite restaurants in Dubrovnik, Bistro Glorijet, and Orsan Yacht Club, are located in the Gruz area.

Accommodation in the Gruz neighborhood, being a bit further from the old town and looking less polished than other Dubrovnik neighborhoods, is more affordable. Gruz is a good place to stay in Dubrovnik on a budget.

Public bus no. 1 connects Gruz with the old town. The bus departs every 10 to 30 minutes from 5 am to midnight. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to reach the town depending on the traffic. The ticket costs 1.99 € (if purchased on a bus, valid for one hour), or 4 € if you buy a daily ticket.

How to budget for your stay in Dubrovnik?

Accommodation in Dubrovnik can get really expensive, especially in July and August, or during some big events taking place in the town.

Expect to pay at least 150 € a night for a double room with breakfast in July or August in a 3-star hotel, 250 € in a 4-star hotel, and 450 € in a 5-star hotel. Alternatively, the daily rental for a studio apartment in the old town will set you back 150 €.

But for instance in other areas of the town, like the Lapad neighborhood, you can find an apartment for 2 for as little as 90 € a day in high season.

Best family-friendly hotels in Dubrovnik

Club Dubrovnik Sunny Hotel by Valamar outdoor swimming pool from the air

If you are traveling with children, especially with teenagers, hotel stays in Dubrovnik can get expensive. Children above a certain age are considered adults and they pay full price. This way hotels discourage families with children to stay there.

If, for example, you try to book a room for two adults and a 10 years old child, you will often be offered only suites or two double rooms which are considerably more expensive than a standard double room for two adults.

However, check with hotels directly about their child policy. Some hotels allow children up until a certain age to stay for free if using an extra bed and staying with two full-paying adults. Valamar hotels, for instance, have such a policy for children up to 12 years of age. Hotel Excelsior, for example, charges 50€ extra per day for a child sharing the room with two paying adults. This isn’t too bad of a deal either.

But while many hotels accept children, hotels Club Dubrovnik Sunny Hotel and Elaphusa in Cavtat are 100% family-friendly hotels in Dubrovnik.

In Club Dubrovnik Sunny Hotel you get 3 meals a day and unlimited selected drinks, and children up to 13 years of age stay for free.

A low-key all-inclusive 3-star hotel Epidaurus in Cavtat features a great seafront location with direct access to the pebbly beach, two outdoor swimming pools, and 312 simple but stylish rooms.

Dubrovnik beach hotels

Hotel Bellevue in Dubrovnik, Beach

Dubrovnik is a great place to spend the summer holidays by the beach, swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying other fun-under-the-sun activities.

So if besides history and culture, you would also like to profit from Dubrovnik beaches , choose one of the Dubrovnik beach hotels for your stay.

Some hotels, like Hotel Excelsior, Valamar Argosy, Valamar Club Dubrovnik, or Hotel Kompas are located in the vicinity of the most popular Dubrovnik beaches, like Banje, Cava Beach, Copacabana, and Sunset Beach. Some other hotels benefit from the more secluded location and their own beaches, like Villa Dubrovnik or Hotel Dubrovnik Palace.

The best Dubrovnik beach hotels are Valamar President , Villa Dubrovnik , and Hotel Bellevue .

Valamar President has a wonderful pebbly beach right in front of the hotel, with sun decks and parasols, a towel service, and a beach bar. There is an elevator from the hotel directly to the beach.

Hotel Bellevue is located above Bellevue Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Dubrovnik. The beach is natural, made of fine pebbles that feel almost like sand. It is backed by cliffs, surrounded by rocks, has an interesting sea cave to swim into, and a great beach restaurant. Hotel guests can use an elevator to get down to and up from the beach.

A beach at the Villa Dubrovnik is cemented and rocky with ladders used to access the sea. However, the beach is completely private due to the location of Villa Dubrovnik. The hotel is carved into the cliffs, and the beach can only be accessed through the hotel which keeps access limited to the hotel’s guests, and by the sea which isn’t very handy. Loungers, parasols, and beachside cocktails are all available at the beach for hotel guests.

Dubrovnik apartments

A bedroom with kitchenette in Dubrovnik's The Byron guest house

Apartments are the single most popular accommodation option in Dubrovnik. If you want more space, a fully-equipped kitchen where you can prepare your own meals, a chance to stay with a local family, and overall more affordable rates, then renting an apartment in Dubrovnik old town or elsewhere can be the right thing to do.

Fear not, long gone are shabby Airbnbs with old furniture and family photos on the walls, reminding you that you are sleeping in the owner’s very own bed. Or a bed of his mother.

Today, many Dubrovnik apartments are new, modern, and furnished by professional interior designers. In fact, many apartments look better than many hotels and often offer better amenities like an espresso coffee machine, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, etc…

Just steps away from Sunset Beach, L’Orangerie Dubrovnik Luxury Residence offers accommodation in various apartments ranging from 80 to 170 m2.

A beautifully restored historical building in Dubrovnik’s old town, The Byron features 3 spacious rooms equipped with a kitchenette (plus one smaller attic room) and stocked with Molton Brown toiletries.

Just out of the city walls, in the Ploce neighborhood, Villa Ragusa Vecchia offers apartments in a fantastic location with a shared rooftop terrace, lots of character, and friendly owners.

Whether you are looking for a heritage home, one of many restored nobleman’s manors hidden behind unassuming stone walls and surrounded by Mediterranean gardens or you look for a lavish modern home with clean lines and spectacular views (or why not both!), you will find it in Dubrovnik.

Booking.com has a decent choice of villas in Dubrovnik , and so does HomeAway. However, you can also check some agencies that specialized exclusively in villa rental like Luxury Croatian Villas .

Camping in Dubrovnik

Camping Solitudo , owned and managed by Valamar Hotels & Resorts, is the only camping in Dubrovnik.

The campsite is located on the Babin Kuk peninsula within a 20-minute bus ride from the old town.

The campsite is open seasonally from April to October. It features 400 pitches and can accommodate about 1.200 people in a single day. Besides touring pitches, camping Solitudo also offers accommodation in mobile homes.

The campsite is by the sea, and guests can use facilities like an outdoor swimming pool and a children’s entertainment program at the nearby hotel.

A grocery store, a bar, and a grill restaurant are all available at the campsite.

Car Rental in Dubrovnik

If you fly into Dubrovnik airport and plan to stay in the town, you actually don’t need a car. Car in Dubrovnik can be more hustle than anything else.

Parking places are scarce, and they are expensive. Besides, streets are often narrow and jam-packed with cars. Dubrovnik’s public transport is good, cabs are plentiful, and walking is always an option. So, if you plan only to visit Dubrovnik, don’t even think about renting a car.

However, if you plan to spend just a couple of days here and then travel up the coast to Split or Peljesac, renting a car might be a good idea, and much better than using buses. A car gives you more freedom, and it’s much faster to travel by car than by bus.

You might also plan to do day trips from Dubrovnik on your own, and you will need a car. In that case, consider renting a car only for days you will actually need it.

Few tips for renting a car in Dubrovnik:

  • Rent your car well in advance if you plan to visit in July and August.
  • Book early in order to secure the best price available.
  • The smaller the car, the easier it is to park it. And also, the cheaper it is.

You can expect to pay 80 € a day for a mini-size car in the high season. The same car you can find for as low as 20 € in the low season.

When guests stay at the property they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff are and more.

And finally, a review

2024 Dubrovnik Accommodation – Where To Stay In Dubrovnik + 55 Best Hotels

Post author SJ

Written by our local expert SJ

Sarah-Jane has lived in Croatia for 10+ years. SJ, as she is known, has been traveling the Balkans & beyond since 2000. She now shares her passion for traveling with her husband & kids.

If you’re headed on holiday to Dubrovnik, and you’ve been asking yourself, ‘What area of Dubrovnik should I stay in?” and you’re confused – then this Dubrovnik accommodation guide is for you based on my 20+ years of traveling Croatia.

You’ll need to know where to stay in Dubrovnik for your travel type (and budget). The best place to stay in Dubrovnik for me is just outside of the old town because you can relax without the crowds you will experience in the heart of the city.

But, staying in Dubrovnik means you need to know big crowds at every corner, greater than any other place in Croatia. So, while you can’t escape the crowds entirely, you can find a hotel in Dubrovnik (or private apartments and guest houses) that are perhaps lesser known.

Croatia, in general, and Dubrovnik, in particular, have become a must-see destination for travelers, even in winter ! This city was featured in the popular television series Game of Thrones .

The stunning views overlooking the Adriatic Sea and the top-notch foodie scene are just some of the highlights visitors to this town can expect. If the hectic city life gets to be a bit much, travelers can take a day trip to the nearby Lokrum Island, Cavtat, or Konavle.

However, visitors to Dubrovnik and the surroundings will want somewhere peaceful to spend the night.

We have found some of the best places to stay in Dubrovnik, broken down by the best neighborhoods. Here are the best areas in Dubrovnik to stay in:

Dubrovnik Old Town

The famous Old Town is the historical center, with a historic building or two!. If your visit is short, this is the best part of Dubrovnik to stay because you’ll be able to walk to all the main sights in Dubrovnik . The Old Town is also a great place to stay in Dubrovnik for nightlife and pub crawls.

It is important to note that this area is the most crowded and often more expensive than other parts of the city, so it’s not always the best choice for those looking to relax after a day of sightseeing or for those traveling on a tight budget.

This is an excellent option if you’re looking for the best location to stay in Dubrovnik, with beaches and resorts .

Set on a bay with easy access to the Old Town, Laplad is an excellent area to stay with kids , as they can run about. The vibe here is chill, with pristine beaches, walking trails, and scenery. There also is an excellent restaurant and bar scene without the bustle of Old Town.

The bus is just a 10-minute ride to Old Town when you want to go exploring.

Pile is located near Lovrijenac Fortress on the west of the Old Town. This is an excellent city area if you want to escape the crowds while still within walking distance of Old Town. There are lots of nearby amenities and hotels, most of which offer stunning views.

Some families and travelers with mobility concerns may find this area slightly more challenging as a home base because there are many steps you need to walk to get into Old Town, making it less friendly from an accessibility standpoint.

This area is located on the east side of the Old Town and is home to many of the city’s luxury and 5-star hotels. It also is an excellent location for easy access to Dubrovnik beaches.

The view here is also hard to beat, with the bay and the island of Lokrum right in sight!

Further out than Laplad, you will find Babin Kuk at the tip of the peninsula. It’s a more isolated area with many hotels and incredibly exclusive resorts. It’s perfect for those looking for a quieter Dubrovnik experience, but it’s not a great choice if you want close access to Old Town.

If you love staying in a local neighborhood, this is a great spot in Dubrovnik. It’s near the main harbor entry, approximately a 30-minute walk from Old Town, but with excellent public transport links to Old Town to utilize in the heat of summer. There are many fantastic, non-touristy souvenir shops, bars, and food joints to check out, and a stunning view of Laplad is here.

It’s great for those on a tighter budget looking for a more genuine, quiet experience in Dubrovnik. Those traveling with large groups may find using public transport to get into and out of Old Town a little challenging.

Prices in all Dubrovnik hotels fluctuate depending on the seasons.

  • You will get good deals if you dodge peak season, starting in July and going through early September .
  • On average, Dubrovnik hotel rates are 60 to 500 euros per night for four and five-star accommodations .
  • They go down to between 30 and 190 euros for two- and three-star accommodations.

What Is The Best Hotel To Stay In Dubrovnik?

Well, that depends on a few factors. Hotels in Dubrovnik near the Old Town will cost more, but you’re where the action is. Booking hotels in the Old Town means you walk less.

If you don’t want your holidays in Dubrovnik to be too costly and are looking for cheap hotels in Dubrovnik, you’ll want to stay out of the Old Town. Here are our suggestions to help you decide on the best place to stay in Dubrovnik in a range of Dubrovnik hotel prices.

Ohh thanks so much! Its freezing here today as well. The fire is burning, and I am all rugged up. So glad you love Croatia too!

You’re welcome Sj, thank you for the attention too :) Ohh my, I hope you get warm and cosy there… fire burning sounds cosy! Yes I love Croatia! I have been to Pula and Krk Island before, there are still lots of places I hope to visit there :)

Nice post! We are going to bookmark this site and when we are in Croatia, this will be our guide. Such a great reference! Thanks again

Thanx for the article it will surely help me a lot in my solo trip. Too much excited. Thanx for sharing and keep Travelling. Happy New Year.

You are so welcome and Happy New Year to you also – enjoy your solo travels. Here is some more info that may help you.

Very beautiful

The Celenga Apartments in the old city of Dubrovnik are wonderful. I highly recommend them and if you want to stay during high season, make your reservations early. It is quiet, modern, close to everything and the people running it are very helpful and friendly.

I’m going to visit Dubrovnik this summer. Can anyone personally recommend one of these or another place?

I stayed at the Hilton a few years ago and everything was great, zero complaints. The staff were also really nice and very helpful. Highly recommend.

Usually bed and breakfasts and private apartments offer better value in Croatia…If you can rent your own flat, I’d do that..check listings in whichever town you’re visiting..

I worked there and is the only hotel I would recommend. Note that rooms on level 2 are smoking (they were not sure if that policy has changed).

Thanks for including Fresh Sheets Bed and Breakfast!

Of course, we had to update it to include it :D

How about private apartment…if you need one let me know

We added some – send us an email with your suggestions :D <3

18 of the best hotels in Dubrovnik

Discover the best places to stay in the croatian city, from historic boutique hotels to stately seaside resorts.

Scalini Palace

R enaissance palaces, cute stone townhouses, mega beachside resorts — they’re all here in Dubrovnik. Between the enchanting old town and its neighbouring peninsulas indented with rocky coves and wide bays, there’s a mind-boggling choice of places to stay. Pick one of the old town’s renovated Renaissance palaces and townhouses that have been converted into classy boutique hotels and upmarket B&Bs, and you’ll be in the heart of the action. It’s hard to resist the beauty of the old town, with its narrow alleyways and those magnificent city walls curving protectively around it.

A few minutes south of Ploce Gate is a string of luxury waterfront hotels and the best of both worlds: Dubrovnik old town within a short walk but right by the Adriatic Sea. Head north of the old town and you reach Lapad and Babin Kuk peninsulas, home of classic Croatian seaside resort hotels, with plenty of space for large outdoor pools and spas. Here’s our pick of the best hotels in Dubrovnik.

1. Rixos Premium Dubrovnik

Rixos Premium Dubrovnik

£ | SPA | POOL | Best for spa time

You’re offered a glass of sparkling wine when you check in, setting the welcoming tone for this sprawling resort that resembles an ocean liner cut into the cliffs. It’s big, yes — 310 rooms — but it’s certainly not lacking in warmth. Maybe it’s all that sunlight flooding in through full-length windows and the huge atrium. Or maybe it’s the bubbling waters of the spa and indoor pool, offering a cocoon from the bustle of Dubrovnik ’s old town, a 20-minute walk. Book a room on the Adriatic side and you’ll have big balconies and terraces tumbling down towards the large outdoor pool, lounge bar and, just beyond, a rocky beach. Dining options including superlative fish and a Japanese restaurant. Although it’s just steps from Dubrovnik’s only casino, it’s very family-friendly, with a kids’ playroom and pool.

2. palace natali.

Palace Natali

££ | POOL | Best for hilltop views

The 16th-century summer home of the aristocratic Natali family makes an appealing hilltop bolt hole that comes with stupendous views of the Adriatic. Soak up those vistas from the outdoor pool, hot tub, restaurant and Renaissance-style gardens. There are only around 20 rooms, all in contemporary style — book one with a sea-view balcony. Relax in the library after a workout in the gym and, if you’re a keen trail runner or hiker, you’re only a moments away from the steep, zigzagging path up to the top of Mount Srd.

3. The Byron

The Byron

££ | Best for friendly service

This boutique B&B is in a beautifully restored 17th-century townhouse near the cathedral, originally with four elegant and cosy rooms with more than a hint of French country cottage about them. They’ve since created another three exquisite rooms, all with the same handcrafted kitchenettes you’ll find in most of the others (only the attic room can’t quite squeeze in a kitchen under the eaves). You’ll be tempted to play the piano in the elegant communal room. Managed by the couple who used to run the much-missed Fresh Sheets Kathedral B&B, it has the same unstinting and helpful service.

4. Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik

Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik

££ | SPA | POOL | Best for sea views

You get two hotels in one at the five-star Hotel Excelsior — one half is an imposing building of Dalmatian stone from 1913; the other is a sleek 1970s addition. Both halves have smart contemporary rooms, many with balconies giving you some of the best views of the old town and the Adriatic from an excellent spot ten minutes’ walk from the city walls. Three restaurants, a piano bar and a large spa with an indoor pool complete the picture.

5. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik

Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik

££ | SPA | POOL | Best for old town convenience

Only seconds away from the northern gate to the old town — yet away from the crowds — the palatial Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik certainly suits its name. This stately 19th-century hotel has a large garden terrace and fabulous sea views from its upper floors, as well as a spa and an indoor pool. It’s worth booking a room with a balcony to soak up those Adriatic vistas.

6. Hotel Kazbek

Hotel Kazbek

££ | POOL | Best for boat trips

Set in a 16th-century stone villa facing Gruz harbour, Hotel Kazbek has laid-back luxury behind its high stone walls. There’s an intimate atmosphere to go with its large outdoor pool and its 13 19th-century-style rooms surrounding the terrace. Catch the sea breeze from the terrace bar and enjoy Croatian cuisine in the vaulted Kazbek restaurant. For days out, hire the hotel’s speedboat for tours of nearby islands.

7. The Pucic Palace

££ | Best for sightseeing

Tucked in among the terracotta rooftops of Dubrovnik old town, this hotel is at the centre of city life. It occupies a former baroque palace on Gundulic Square and has seen a few things in its lifetime; it has its very own chapel, commissioned by the Venetian baron who lived here, and each of the 19 bedrooms is named after a local figure. Exposed stone walls and wooden beams come as standard, as do Victorian-style porcelain tubs and Italian mosaic tiles, and the corridors are lined with glass-cased antiques and artworks. This is a classic hotel that feels like a museum piece (in a good way), with a terrace restaurant for people-watching and a wine bar for a crash course in Croatian vintages. It’s an atmospheric address from where you can beat the crowds to all the sights.

8. St Joseph’s

St Joseph’s

££ | Best for boutique elegance

Two beautifully restored 16th-century stone houses make up St Joseph’s, a sumptuous boutique B&B with only nine rooms, suites and apartments. Decked out in a reined-in French country style with exposed beams and pale stone walls, the rooms all come with kitchenettes where you can enjoy the lavish breakfast that’s delivered daily.

9. Sun Gardens Dubrovnik

£ | SPA | POOL | Best for spa lovers

Sometimes it’s good to get a little distance from the old town, especially in the height of summer. This is an unashamedly big-hitting resort — almost a village in itself — with no claim to history but flaunting an enviable position amid landscaped grounds on the beachfront. Bedrooms come in every size, all with a terrace or balcony, and there are self-catering apartments for families — topped by the five-bedroom pool villa. Activities might involve a cycling tour while the children let off steam at the summer sports camp (everything from badminton to water polo), as well as mixology lessons and an outstanding spa. Of the many restaurants, Cilantro is recommended for its seafood. A world to itself, best for a beach holiday with an occasional foray into the medieval city.

10. Villa Dubrovnik

Villa Dubrovnik

£££ | SPA | POOL | Best for modern chic

Built into the cliff about a 15-minute walk from the old town, Villa Dubrovnik makes certain all of its guests can enjoy those superlative views. All 56 contemporary rooms and suites have sea-facing terraces, and the deluxe suites have outdoor hot tubs too. When you’re not in the spa or in the indoor pool, you can flop on the bathing platform and dive into that glorious sea. There’s a complimentary bus to the old town, as well as a motorboat shuttle.

11. Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection

Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection

££ | SPA | POOL | Best for Babin Kuk beaches

Covering a fair chunk of the Babin Kuk peninsula, the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection features its own large secluded beach — as close to a private beach you can get in a country that officially doesn’t have any. All 292 of its spacious, modern rooms and suites have sea views and furnished terraces. As the hotel faces west, that means spectacular sunsets from the rooms and the Miramare and Momenti restaurants. There’s a large outdoor pool to go with the enormous spa.

12. Prijeko Palace

Prijeko Palace

££ | Best for arty atmosphere

Throughout Prijeko Palace, artists have been given free rein to decorate the nine stylish rooms set in this 15th-century stone palace that runs parallel to the old town’s main Stradun thoroughfare. Part of the fun is checking out the various roof terraces that are part of the Stara Loza restaurant, all offering wonderful views of terracotta rooftops and the Adriatic beyond.

13. Hotel Dubrovnik Palace

Hotel Dubrovnik Palace

££ | SPA | POOL | Best for waterside luxury

Hugging the cliffs on the southern part of Lapad peninsula, Hotel Dubrovnik Palace makes the most of its splendid seaside location. Along with two outdoor pools, a rocky beach, a diving centre and a rooftop spa, it has 308 contemporary rooms all with sea views and a balcony. Backed by the fragrant pinewoods of Petka park — an appealing place for a jog through the woods — the hotel is in a tranquil location, yet it’s easy to reach the old town by bus.

14. Scalini Palace

Scalini Palace

££ | Best for old town charm

This boutique hotel is set within a 500-year-old townhouse just off Stradun. Rooms have modern comforts and great flair for design, while keeping an eye on the heritage of the place. Some have little balconies (which make a lovely place for breakfast overlooking the lanes of the old town), and kitchens if you want to make use of Dubrovnik’s fabulous local produce.

15. Hotel Kompas Dubrovnik

Hotel Kompas Dubrovnik

££ | SPA | POOL | Best for Lapad beach breaks

Just a few feet from Lapad’s beach, Hotel Kompas has stirring views to go with its chic minimalist rooms and huge waterfront terrace. All of its 173 rooms and suites have terraces, and most have sea views. If you want a change from the outdoor pool, use one of the hotel’s sun loungers on the pebbly beach at Lapad Bay. There’s also an extensive spa with a huge sun terrace and bar, and the rooftop Zenith Bar is a must for sundowners in full view of the sunset.

16. Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik

Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik

£££ | SPA | POOL | Best for couples on a beach retreat

Overlooking the sheltered beach at Miramare Bay, Hotel Bellevue is a sophisticated, peaceful spot on the cliffs about a 20-minute walk north of the old town. While all of its 91 breezy, contemporary rooms and suites come with sea views, it’s worth paying extra for one with a balcony. The indoor freshwater pool has wonderful views of the sea, but if you prefer the sea, there’s a lift that takes you down to the serviced beach.

17. Lopud 1483

£££ | Best for art lovers

A thrilling speedboat ride from Dubrovnik old town harbour, this is the result of two decades of painstaking restoration that took a Franciscan monastery and turned it into a living space whose five suites can be rented in their entirety. There are cloisters and ruins to explore, a rooftop terrace for watching boats sail past, and a bee-buzzed garden planted with medicinal herbs. But it’s also a very special gallery, curated by the woman who steered the restoration — Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, a major force in contemporary art. Paintings, photographs and fabrics line the corridors and bedrooms, while antique pieces from her family’s collection are assembled in the dining room. With a housekeeper and chef, feasts and excursions can be arranged, along with massages and yoga classes on the lawn — although one of the greatest pleasures here is simply walking down to the rocks and swimming in the sea past the fortress walls. lopud1483.com

18. Bokun Guesthouse

£ | POOL | Best for foodies and ferry rides

This friendly, family-run guesthouse set in a 400-year-old stone farmhouse is only a few minutes’ walk from both the ferry port and the large food market at Gruz, which is turning into Dubrovnik’s trendiest district. Within high stone walls are a lush garden, swimming pool and vine-shaded breakfast terrace and barbecue to go with the eight rooms and three apartments.

Dubrovnik Travel Guide

A view overlooking the Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia and the old city walls

Located on the southern coast of Croatia , Dubrovnik is the most popular destination in the country. Already a booming tourist destination, it was made significantly more popular by Game of Thrones (which filmed here regularly) as well as a recent influx of cruise lines.

On everyone’s radar these days, Dubrovnik is beautiful and everything you might want it to be. The city is one of the wonders of Europe , combining a fantastically preserved medieval town surrounded by thick, 24-meter (80-foot) high walls with a glimmering azure sea as its backdrop. It’s simply striking.

And, as a bonus, the food and wine scene here has improved by leaps and bounds, and accommodations are plentiful and world-class.

While Dubrovnik does struggle with overtourism, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go. Just be prepared for crowds in the summer (though I would totally skip the summer and go in early spring or late fall). If you get out of the old walled city, you can find a ton of places in the new part of town and in the surrounding regions that are free from the hordes of tourists.

This travel guide to Dubrovnik can help you plan your trip and beat the crowds as you explore Croatia’s iconic destination.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Dubrovnik

The Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia and the towering city walls

1. Walk the medieval city walls

Walking the walls, which were constructed in the 12th-17th centuries and are still incredibly well preserved, is an obligatory activity for first-timers in Dubrovnik. It’s not cheap (and the price seems to go up just about every year), but the 2 kilometer (1.2-mile) journey around Old Town, or Stari Grad , is worth the price. With parts of the walls reaching a maximum height of 25 meters (83 feet), this is the best way to view the city from above. Along the length of the walls, there are an impressive 4 gates, 2 round towers, 2 corner towers, 12 forts, and 5 bastions. Admission is 250 HRK.

2. Explore the beaches

Lapad Uvala is a lovely sandy beach (a rarity in Croatia) on which to plant yourself for a day of swimming and sun-worshipping. Its proximity to restaurants, as well as the long, café-flanked Lapad promenade, makes it popular with both locals and tourists. If you’re staying near Old Town, take bus #2 from Pile Gate.

If you don’t mind a pebbled beach, Banje is located just a five-minute walk from Old Town. There’s a public section as well as the private Banje Beach Club, where you can dance the night away once it turns into a nightclub in the evenings.

3. Take a boat trip

Taking a boat trip is the best way to explore all the islands, coves, caves, and beaches near Dubrovnik. The Elaphites is a nearby archipelago popular for day trips by boat. Take your pick from the variety of tours on offer, including glass-bottom boats, sailing trips, kayaking tours, and sunset and dinner cruises. Another popular boat trip is to the so-called Blue Cave, a phenomenon in which sunlight pouring through the top of a cave lights up the limestone seafloor with a radiant blue color. Boat tours start at 210 HRK for three hours while boat tours to the Blue Cave that also visit Sunj Beach and include drinks are around 600 HRK.

4. Spend time on Lokrum Island

Lokrum , just a 15-minute ferry ride away, is a peaceful, verdant island, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. It boasts hiking trails, viewpoints, a fortress built by Napoleonic soldiers, and a botanical garden. There’s even a mini “Dead Sea” on the island — a small, calm lake with very high salt content, in which one can float. Locals also swear that the restaurant Lacroma has the best fried calamari in Croatia. Ferries run every 30 minutes June to September and hourly during the low season (200 HRK round-trip). You can find the schedule here .

5. Visit the Cultural History Museum

A 14th-century Gothic-Renaissance palace hosts Dubrovnik’s Cultural History Museum, featuring over 20,000 objects related to the city’s history, as well as rooms decorated in period style. The collections include paintings, prints, furniture, textiles, ceramics, metals, icons, glass, photographs, and more, ranging from the 14th to the 20th centuries. The building was also a prominent Game of Thrones filming location (standing in for the Spice King’s mansion in Qarth). Admission is 100 HRK.

Other Things to See and Do in Dubrovnik

1. take a free walking tour.

The first thing I do in a new city is to take a free walking tour. It’s the best way to see the main sights, learn about local history and culture, and connect with an expert guide who can answer all your questions. Free Dubrovnik Tours offers regular free tours that cover all the highlights around town. Just be sure to tip at the end!

2. Trek up to Fort Lovrijenac

Game of Thrones fans will recognize this imposing citadel as the Red Keep from King’s Landing. Nicknamed “the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik” (you’ll know why once you lay eyes on it), this 11th-century fort just outside the western walls of Old Town was built in an attempt to keep the dreaded Venetians from invading — and it succeeded. The walls facing the sea are 11-meters (39-feet) thick, allowing Dubrovnik — then called the Republic of Ragusa — to remain an antonymous city-state beyond the control of Venice (this lasted all the way up to 1808, before it succumbed to Napoleon and then the Austro-Hungarian Empire). With your ticket to the walls, you get entry to this fort and thus a very different angle and view of the city. And a very good one at that.

3. Tour the Red History Museum

Dubrovnik is not really known for its museums. But this newish spot , located near the new port in the district of Gruž, is worth the trek from Old Town. The exhibits tell the story of Yugoslavia, a country that included Croatia that dissolved in 1992, making it a good primer for anyone not familiar with the former country’s history. There are re-creations of a typical Yugoslav living room from the ‘60s and ‘70s, installations on the good parts of socialism, and text-heavy explanations of the country’s darker side. Admission is 50 HRK.

4. Drink local craft beer

When the founders of the Dubrovnik Beer Company wanted to open a brewery in this 1,300-year-old city, they did some research in the archives to learn about past breweries in Dubrovnik — only to learn that there had never been one. It seems hard to believe, but, then again, this part of Croatia is all about wine. But you’ll want to switch from wine to beer once you sip the delicious sudsy stuff they’re brewing here, located in the Gruž neighborhood. Hop on a stool in the taproom and sip from a variety of beers, including the refreshingly crisp lager Maestral, named after the warm northwesterly winds that blow down the Adriatic coast in the summer. The brewery is just around the corner from the Red History Museum, so after taking in some Communist history, you may want a beer or three to digest everything.

5. Visit the War Photo Ltd. Museum/Gallery

When New Zealand-born Wade Goddard decided to retire from capturing combat zones on film, he started an incredible photo gallery dedicated to war photography. This Old Town museum is a must-see, especially for those who want to get a better understanding of the Balkan wars of the 1990s and the 1991-92 siege of Dubrovnik. The images are sometimes shocking and often saddening, but a visit here is important. Admission is about 70 HRK.

6. See the spot where quarantines were born

The denizens of Dubrovnik know a thing or two about quarantines. That’s because the practice was first put into regular use here. In 1377, authorities of the city (then known as Ragusa) instituted a 40-day quarantine for incoming visitors due to the Black Plague that was ravaging Europe at the time. The place they designated for this 40-day stay was just east of Ploce Gate, today the most well-preserved historical lazaretti (quarantine structures) in the northern Mediterranean. They are now used for concerts and art exhibitions and other public events.

7. Explore an abandoned Yugoslav-era hotel

A 25-minute walk from Old Town’s Ploce Gate is the Hotel Belvedere. Until 1991, when it was bombed during the war, it was a luxurious five-star resort; it even had a helipad for the super-rich. Today it sits unloved and abandoned, making it an intriguing place to visit. If you squint a bit, you can imagine what Yugoslavia may have been like. You may also recognize some parts of the ruined hotel from scenes in Game of Thrones . There’s long been talk that a Russian oligarch has purchased the property and plans to restore the hotel to its five-star glory. But until that happens, visitors can still stroll around the ruined grounds before the 1% retake the space.

8. Gawk at medieval art

On the eastern end of Stradun near the clocktower sits the Dominican Monastery, founded in the late 14th century. It’s a fun stroll through the complex and admire its Gothic architecture and design, and the cloisters are the most striking part. Make sure you see the art collection and don’t miss “Mary Magdalene with SS Raphael, Blaise, and Tobias,” the amazing painting by Venetian master Titian (Blaise is the patron saint of Dubrovnik). Admission is 30 HRK.

9. Stroll on Stradun

In the early evening, when tourists and tour leaders retreat, locals descend upon Old Town to stroll the Stradun, its “wide” main street. Specifically, they do a dir — pronounced “dzeer,” derived from the Italian giro for doing a “tour” — a slow amble, while greeting old friends and neighbors to gossip. It’s a time-honored, centuries-old Dubrovnik tradition.

10. Ride the cable car up to Mt. Srd

There’s no better view of town than from the cable car as it soars 1,361 feet up to the top of the mountain. A Napoleonic-era fort at the summit has been turned into a museum dedicated to the siege of Dubrovnik and the wars that broke up Yugoslavia. A round-trip ticket is 200 HRK, available April to October. (Alternatively, you can hike up and down the mountain via a hiking trail.)

11. Explore the Homeland War Museum

While you’re at the top of Mt Srd, spend some time visiting this museum dedicated to the 1991–95 Croatian war of independence. Located in a historic fort that played a role in defending the city, the museum features a variety of military memorabilia as well as an English-language documentary. It’s a great place to understand more about this dark period of the country’s recent history. Admission is 30 HRK (cash only).

12. Go on a Game of Thrones tour

For an in-depth look at many filming locations for the famous HBO series, a tour is the way to go (most King’s Landing scenes were filmed here). There are countless to choose from, from walking tours to sailing tours, some complete with props so you can stage your own photos on location. The Ultimate Game of Thrones Tour lasts two hours and costs around 150 HRK.

If you’re on a budget, there’s also now a free Game of Thrones tour — just remember to tip your guide at the end!

13. View works by Croatian artists

Visit the Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik (MoMAD) to gain a deeper understanding of Croatian culture through the eyes of Croatians themselves. The museum is located in a former shipbuilder’s mansion and features over 3,000 works by prominent Croatian modern artists. Free admission is available as part of the Dubrovnik Pass.

14. Enjoy a wine tour

Croatian winemaking dates back over 2,500 years to the ancient Greeks. Today, Croatia is one of the world’s top producers, mainly focusing on white wines due to the area’s particular climate. On a tour, you’ll explore the rolling hills covered in vineyards, learning about the country’s beloved winemaking traditions that haven’t changed in centuries. Dubrovnik Wine Tours offers full-day tours starting at 1,130 HRK.

15. Take a food tour

If you prefer to skip the wine and just focus on the food, there are plenty of tours that do just that. Sample traditional Croatian favorites like freshly caught seafood, prosciutto, black risotto, and traditional desserts, like rožata (caramel flan). Dubrovnik Food Tours offers a variety, including an Old Town tour, a culinary boat cruise, and even cooking classes, starting at 565 HRK per person.

16. Day-trip to another country

Dubrovnik’s location makes it ideal for popping into another country for a day. Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kotor in Montenegro are both picturesque historic cities that can easily be visited in a day. If you don’t want to go solo, Super Tours organizes full-day tours into Montenegro for just 375 HRK per person while full-day tours to Mostar are just 300 HRK.

17. Visit the Maritime History Museum

Visit this more off-beat museum for an in-depth look at this important port’s maritime history. The small but fascinating museum includes artifacts such as old maps, navigational instruments, objects uncovered from shipwrecks, models of historic ships, and more. Admission is 130 HRK, which also includes entry to all the Dubrovnik city museums.

Dubrovnik Travel Costs

The charming Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia as seen from the sea

Hostel prices – Hostels in Dubrovnik’s Old Town are few and far between. And they are expensive, with prices starting at 195 HRK per night for a dorm (120 HRK in the off-season). Private rooms start at around 375 HRK per night. Free Wi-Fi is standard, though self-catering facilities are rare.

Note that many hostels close in the winter.

Budget hotel prices – Hotels are not cheap in Dubrovnik, especially in Old Town. For a typical two-star hotel, expect to pay around 450 HRK per night during the low season and about 800 HRK during the high season. This gets you basic amenities like free Wi-Fi and TV, and occasionally free breakfast.

If you want your own apartment in Dubrovnik, expect the cost to fluctuate depending on location. In Old Town, which is basically one giant Airbnb these days, high-season apartments cost around 400-600 HRK per night for a one-bedroom flat. For apartments outside of the center, expect to pay around 300 HRK per night. During low season, Old Town apartments can drop down to about 250 HRK per night.

Food – Croatian cuisine has influences from Central Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Balkans. Seafood is a prominent staple in Dubrovnik, owing to its location on the coast, and sausage and schnitzel can be found at most traditional restaurants as well, as can a variety of pasta dishes and stews, especially goulash.

Like everything else in Dubrovnik, eating out is not exactly cheap. Expect to pay about 130-190 HRK per person (without drinks) at most restaurants. If you want to splurge, a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant costs around 250 HRK.

For fast food (think McDonald’s), a combo meal costs around 50 HRK. Sandwiches from Milnar (a bakery chain) are your cheapest to-go option, usually costing around 30 HRK.

Beer costs around 30-40 HRK, while a latte or cappuccino is around 15 HRK. Bottled water is usually around 15 HRK.

If you plan on cooking your own food, expect to spend 230-275 HRK for a week’s worth of groceries. This gets you basic staples like rice, pasta, seasonal produce, and some meat or fish.

Backpacking Dubrovnik Suggested Budgets

If you are backpacking Dubrovnik, my suggested budget is 355 HRK per day. This assumes you’re staying in a hostel dorm, cooking all of your meals, limiting your drinking, doing free activities like hiking and walking tours, and using local transportation to get around. You’ll need to budget more if you’re visiting in the summer or if you plan on drinking.

On a mid-range budget of 925 HRK per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb or private hostel room, eat out for most of your meals, have a few drinks, take some guided tours, take the occasional taxi to get around, and visit more museums and attractions, like walking the walls and going to the Game of Thrones museum.

On a “luxury” budget of 1,825 HRK per day, you can stay in a hotel, rent a car to get around, do private guided tours, eat and drink as much as you’d like, and visit as many museums and attractions as you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get an idea of how much you need to budget daily. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in HRK.

Dubrovnik Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Dubrovnik is the most expensive city in Croatia, especially during the peak summer months, when prices shoot through the roof. It’s simply not a budget destination during the summer. It’s best to visit in the shoulder seasons if you’re on a budget, as accommodation prices become much more affordable. Here are a few ways to save money no matter when you go though:

  • Buy a Dubrovnik Card – Purchase a Dubrovnik Card at the main tourist office at Pile Gate outside of Old Town and you’ll get free entry to the walls, the Franciscan Monastery, the Rupe Ethnography Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, in addition to a handful of other sites. It also gives you free transportation on city buses and up to 30% discount on certain restaurants, shops, and excursions. There are three types of cards: 1 day for 250 HRK, 3 days for 300 HRK, and 7 days for 350 HRK.
  • Walk everywhere – Dubrovnik’s outsized reputation and popularity belies its small size. It’s a very walkable city. You could trek from one side of town to the other in about an hour. But most of the sites you’ll want to visit are less than a 30-minute stroll.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle – The tap water in Dubrovnik is safe to drink when there’s not a rainstorm (for reasons that are too complicated to explain here). Bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your reliance on single-use plastic. LifeStraw is my go-to choice, as it makes a bottle with a built-in filter that ensures that your water is always clean and safe.
  • Travel during off-season or shoulder season – To avoid the higher summer prices, visit during the shoulder season (see below for details). Additionally, stay outside the Old Town in the Gruz, Lapad, and Zupa areas. Prices are much lower there.
  • Cook your own meals – Dubrovnik is the most expensive city in Croatia, so avoid eating out here if you’re on a tight budget. Head to the market, grab some fresh food, and cook your own meals. You’ll save a fortune.
  • Stay with a local – The best way to save on accommodation is to Couchsurf . You’ll not only get a free place to crash but also connect with a local insider who can teach you about the city and its culture. If you don’t want to stay with a stranger, you can also use the app to meet people for coffee and other activities.
  • Take a free walking tour – Free tours are the best way to learn about a destination and see the highlights on a budget. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!
  • Visit accessible destinations – Instead of going on tours, which can often be way more expensive, consider going to destinations that are fully accessible by public transportation. For example, instead of Lokrum Island (150 HRK return), consider Lopud (also one of the gorgeous Elafiti islands) on the Jadrolinija ferry for around 46 HRK return. Additional destinations that can be easily reached by public ferry include to Pomona (on Mljet) for as little as 35 HRK.
  • Eat at Milnar – The best way to eat on a budget besides cooking is to eat sandwiches and slices of pizza at shops like Milnar. These offer the cheapest foods in the city.
  • Pay in local currency – When paying with a credit card, if you’re asked whether you want to pay in the local currency rather than US dollars (or whatever currency your card is tied to), always choose the local currency. You always get a better rate with the local currency.

Where to Stay in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has plenty of fun, social, and affordable hostels. Here are some of my favorite places to stay there:

  • Old Town Hostel
  • Hostel Lina
  • Dubrovnik Backpackers Club
  • Hostel Free Bird

How to Get Around Dubrovnik

The historic old buildings of Dubrovnik, Croatia

Public transportation – City buses are the way to go in Dubrovnik. There are nine lines, and nearly all of them end up at Old Town at some point. You can buy a ticket onboard or purchase one at any newspaper kiosk and validate it once you board. Tickets from kiosks cost 12 HRK; onboard they cost 15 HRK.

Taxis – Taxis start at 25 HRK and go up by 8 HRK per kilometer. Skip them if you can, as that adds up quickly and will blow your budget. A taxi from the bus station to Old Town is around 90 HRK. Prices are also set, so don’t try to negotiate a lower fare. You’ll get nowhere.

Ridesharing – Uber is available and cheaper than taxis. One thing to keep in mind is that drivers are notorious for canceling. If you’re planning to use a rideshare, budget some extra time for your trip just in case one cancels.

Bike rental – Dubrovnik isn’t a great city for biking, owing to its busy roads. Bike rentals aren’t super cheap either, costing around 150 HRK per day.

Car rental – You don’t need a car to get around town. However, if you plan to explore the region, a vehicle might come in handy. Rentals start around 100-130 HRK per day for a multi-day rental. Drivers need an international driving permit (IDP).

When to Go to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik changes dramatically from summer to winter and back to summer again. In summer, it is overwhelmed with tourists. In winter, it’s almost dead, and a lot of shops and restaurants close until March or April.

Fortunately, there’s always that happy medium: shoulder season. April-May and mid-September to the first week of November are excellent times to go. Prices are lower than in summer, and there are fewer tourists. Expect highs in the shoulder season to be around 23°C (73°F).

If you must choose between the spring and autumn shoulder seasons, go with April-May. Locals are very happy to get back to work after a winter of doing nothing, so they welcome visitors with open arms. By September or October, though, they start to get tired and crabby from working hard during the long tourist season and are not as pleasant.

If you go in winter, time your visit to the annual Dubrovnik Winter Festival, a multiweek extravaganza that centers around Old Town. It’s the one time you’ll see only locals using the historic center the way it had been for centuries: a place for residents and not tourists. It usually runs from the last week of November until January 6.

How to Stay Safe in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a safe place to backpack — even if you’re traveling solo, and even as a solo female traveler. The city is relatively free of crime, even petty theft. There have been spurts of pickpocketing in the last couple of years, but the police have done a good job of stomping it out.

That said, always keep your valuables secure and out of sight when in crowded areas and when on public transportation, just to be safe. Also, never leave your things unattended when at the beach. Thefts are rare but they can occur.

Solo female travelers should feel safe here but, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone at night if you’ve been drinking, etc.). For more tips, check out one of the many solo female travel blogs about the city. They can provide specific tips.

Luckily, save for the shady, dodgy restaurants on Prijeko Street in Old Town, there are very few scams in Dubrovnik. Still, if you’re worried about getting ripped off here’s a list of common travel scams to avoid .

When hiking, always bring water and sunscreen. Be sure to check the weather before you depart, and dress accordingly.

If you experience an emergency, dial 112 for assistance.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. It will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancelations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it, as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Dubrovnik Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine. They search small websites and budget airlines that larger search sites tend to miss. They are hands down the number one place to start.
  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.
  • Top Travel Credit Cards – Points are the best way to cut down travel expenses. Here’s my favorite point earning credit cards so you can get free travel!
  • BlaBlaCar – BlaBlaCar is a ridesharing website that lets you share rides with vetted local drivers by pitching in for gas. You simply request a seat, they approve, and off you go! It’s a cheaper and more interesting way to travel than by bus or train!

Onofrio, an architect from Naples, was hired to design the town’s waterworks and fountains. He also constructed a remarkable 12 km long water supply system between 1435 and 1442, bringing water from the Knežica spring to the Old Town via the Šumet River in Rijeka Dubrovacka. This water supply system remained in operation until the late 19th century. Unfortunately, the fountain suffered significant damage during the earthquake in 1667 and was subsequently rebuilt.

Onofrio’s Fountain is adorned with 16 stone-carved masks, known as “maskerons,” and features a statue of a dog at the top. Affectionately referred to as the “kuchak” or fountain dog, the statue was severely damaged and replaced with a replica in 2016.

When to Go to Dubrovnik

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). These months offer comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds compared to the peak summer season.

  • Spring (April to June): Spring is an ideal time to visit Dubrovnik. The weather is mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) in April to 26°C (79°F) in June. The city’s lush gardens and landscapes are in full bloom during this period. You can explore the city comfortably without the intense summer heat, and tourist crowds are relatively low.
  • Summer (July to August): While summer brings warm and sunny weather, it’s also the peak tourist season in Dubrovnik. Expect crowded streets, higher accommodation prices, and hot temperatures, often reaching 30°C (86°F) or more. If you can handle the crowds and heat, you can enjoy the beautiful beaches and outdoor activities.
  • Autumn (September to October): Autumn is another excellent time to visit Dubrovnik. The weather remains pleasant with temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) in September to 17°C (63°F) in October. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, and the city is less crowded compared to summer. You can enjoy outdoor activities and explore the city comfortably.
  • Winter (November to March): Winter in Dubrovnik is the offseason. While the city is less crowded, the weather can be quite chilly, with temperatures ranging from 8°C (46°F) in November to 12°C (54°F) in February. Some restaurants and attractions may have reduced operating hours during this period. However, if you prefer a quieter and more budget-friendly visit, you can still enjoy Dubrovnik’s charm during the winter months.

Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit Dubrovnik for a balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer is great for beach lovers but comes with more tourists, while winter offers a quieter experience but cooler temperatures. Choose the season that aligns with your preferences and interests for an enjoyable visit to this beautiful city.

Dubrovnik, Croatia Vacation: A Wonderful Seaside Escape

Located on Croatia’s stunning Adriatic coastline, Dubrovnik has a rich and storied history stretching centuries. This city, once known as the Republic of Ragusa, has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, bearing witness to a tapestry of events that have shaped its unique character.

One fascinating fact about Dubrovnik is that the city’s historic Old Town, surrounded by impressive medieval walls, served as the backdrop for the fictional city of King’s Landing in the popular TV series Game of Thrones. Many iconic scenes from the show were filmed within the walls of Dubrovnik, making it a must-visit destination for fans of the series who want to immerse themselves in the world of Westeros.

Steeped in medieval charm and architectural marvels, Dubrovnik offers a compelling blend of heritage and modernity, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and leisure seekers. With its intriguing past and various attractions, Dubrovnik is a city that invites exploration and promises an unforgettable experience.

Best Time To Visit Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Peak Season (Ju ne-August): Like other European destinations, the best time to visit Dubrovnik is summer. The summer season sees more visitors mainly because of Croatia’s incredible weather, which is optimal for spending time in and around the Adriatic Sea. You can typically expect the average highs to be between mid-80s and low 70s and the average lows between high 60s and low 70s.

Shoulder Season (May-May and September-November): Dubrovnik’s shoulder season unfolds during the spring and autumn, offering an ideal window for those seeking a quieter experience with milder weather. Late May or early September may bring warmer temperatures, providing an opportunity to bask in the sun or savor the Adriatic Sea. However, it’s important to note that if your primary goal is beach relaxation, these months might offer less warm weather, with highs generally ranging from the low 60s to low 70s and average lows between the mid-40s and low 60s. Nonetheless, this period is perfect for strolls around town and regional hikes.

Off-Season (December-February): The winter months of December, January, and February mark Dubrovnik’s off-season, characterized by minimal crowds and average temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to mid-50s. This period is ideal for those seeking to explore the city’s historical attractions and hiking trails, as the absence of long lines and fewer tourists enhances the experience. However, if beach enjoyment is a priority, this isn’t the season for you to visit.

We stayed at this hotel in old town . Please note that this accommodation is generally smaller, more expensive, and not accessible by car.

You’ll find cheaper and more spacious hotels outside of the city walls. Lapad and Babin are great spots, located close to the main ferry harbor.

Tip: Part of Dubrovnik’s beauty is its steep roads and steps. Bear this in mind when packing for your trip (we recommend using a backpack rather than a suitcase with wheels, as this will be difficult to use on the cobblestones!).

Dubrovnik and Surroundings

The whole Dubrovnik region is well-known for its fascinating landscapes, abundant Mediterranean vegetation, mild climate and interesting smaller settlements. In former times, it became part of the Dubrovnik Republic territory, becoming connected with the city via historical, economic and trade route ties.

In tourism, it is now called the Dubrovnik Riviera. Visiting Dubrovnik is not a complete pleasure without seeing at least a part of its surroundings: the good land and sea connections offer the possibility of organizing either shorter or longer excursions.

Under the mild Mediterranean climate, Dubrovnik is bathed in a sea of sun, blossoms and ripe orange and lemon tree fruit, even in the winter months. There are more than 250 sunny days per year, the average annual temperature is about 17°C, with the mean winter and summer temperatures being 10°C and 26°C respectively. The average summer sea temperature is about 21°C. The swimming season in the sea begins as early as April, sometimes even earlier, and lasts until late October, while swimming in indoor hotel pools is available year round. Dubrovnik and its surrounding areas cover the southernmost region of the Republic of Croatia and its Dalmatian province, from Neum in the west to Sutorina and Ponte Ostre in the east. The region borders with the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north and the Republic of Montenegro to the east. This long, narrow coastal belt under the Dinaric mountains and low mountain peaks spreads to the east in the Konavle Polje (Fields), and includes Sniježnica Mountain and its mountainous region, it being its most inland point. One side borders with Herzegovina, the other with Montenegro, with the border line following the mountain peaks and at certain points coming to within a few hundred metres of the sea (such as at Duboka Ljuta).

The City of Dubrovnik is under UNESCO protection. According to records, the area around Dubrovnik was first inhabited somewhere between 6000 and 2000 BC. The existence of the city was lost in the cloudy course of history, with legend and historical facts being meshed together. The lack of any preserved documents makes the whole pinpointing process harder, and the few historians that are researching this topic are left with the task to distinguish fact from fiction. What is certain is that Dubrovnik is an old city, persevering on its stony cliffs for at least 14 centuries. An even older city, Epidaurum, predates Dubrovnik, being located where the city of Cavtat now lies, about 18 kilometres southeast of Dubrovnik. At the time of its destruction it had endured for at least 10 to 12 centuries. Again, historians cannot be sure. Some believe that the Greeks founded the colony around 600BC. With the city destroyed, a number of its inhabitants fled to neighbouring regions (today’s Župa Dubrovačka), where the fortified cities of Spilan and Gradac (Burnum) were inhabited, as well as the rocky islet of Laus, which became the first city core of old Dubrovnik.

The rapid settlement of Laus resulted in the development of a new city, today’s Dubrovnik (in the 7th century) which would, on that small rocky area, grow deep roots and build a glorious and heroic history in the stormy centuries to follow. During the 7th century, the Slavic tribes, with Croats being one of the superior ones, had already set up permanent residences along the majority of the eastern Adriatic coast, with the exception of a few fortified Roman cities, which were becoming cut off from the rest of the empire in the wake of this rapid Slavic population. In comparison to the development of cities with a Roman population, a settlement was developing near Ragusium, at the foothills of Mount Srđ, which received the Croatian name Dubrovnik. The name came from the oak forests which even today are called “dubrave” today. During the 10th and 11th century, the sea strait between the two settlements became shallower due to alleviation, drying up completely at the end. When the two settlements, already joined together, were fortified and strengthened within the same city walls at the end of 12th century, the result was the Old Town of Dubrovnik, an urban centre preserved to the present day.

In the bosom of the fragrant park is the former Benedictine monastery (from the 12th century), closed down during Napoleon’s occupation. Later, the monastery and the islet as a whole came into possession of the Habsburg Archduke Maximilian and became his summer residence in 1859. Maximilian renovated the monastery in the neo-Gothic style and built a castle in the shape of a tower. Following Maximilian’s tragic death in Mexico, the islet changed hands several times, and today is a protected nature park.

During the French occupation, the French erected a citadel called “Fort Royal” at the highest point on the island, which is a lookout point today, offering the loveliest view of Lokrum and the whole of Dubrovnik.

A special attraction on Lokrum is its small lake, called the “dead sea”. The castle today is home to the Biological Institute of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Natural Sciences Museum, with its valuable collections and memorial collection of world renowned Dubrovnik mathematician, atomist and astronomer Ruđer Bošković (18th century). Transport to Lokrum is organized via tourist boats from the Dubrovnik old town port.

Cavtat is the largest and the only urban centre in Konavle that has been built up deliberately. Located on the Rat peninsula, which, together with the Sustjepan peninsula, surrounds the well protected and accessible bay. In its harmonious architecture, one can observe the centuries-old natural, spiritual and material ties to the Dubrovnik Republic.

Cavtat, known as Epidaurus in antique times, was an important Roman colony in this region. After Slavic and Avarian numbers in the area rose the colony expired, forcing its inhabitants to flee to the nearby settlement Laus-Rave-Ragus, the very settlement that is the foundation of Dubrovnik. Some ancient sources mention Cavtat under the name of Ragusa Vecchia, indicating a strong connection between the two cities. During the Dubrovnik Republic, Cavtat was seen as a very important sea port, trade and administration hub in the Republic, second only to Dubrovnik.

Places that offer so much to visitors are a rare find. Even the most demanding tourist will find something suiting their wishes: the beautiful scenery, rich cultural and historic heritage combined with a wide range of services make this town a very attractive destination on the Adriatic coast. Cavtat itself is located between Dubrovnik and Konavle: one can still feel the spirit of times past and experience the old traditions permeating the area to this day. By all accounts it’s an ideal holiday resort, with something for everyone, be it exploring and enjoying hidden coves in peace, spending the day enjoying long walks along the seaside or even participating in sports and watching one of many entertaining cultural programs.

Cavtat (from the Latin Civitas), while being established by the Illyrians, had a turbulent record of rule and possesion: it was under Greek and Roman rule, it was seized by different powers, ravaged by invading Avars and Slavs. It had part of its population flee to the islet of Laus which later became Dubrovnik. Early on in the 15th century, Cavtat became a part of the Dubrovnik Republic when the western part of Konavle was taken over from Bosnian magnate Radoslav Pavlović.

Many famous Croats were born in Cavtat: the lawyer Baltazar Bogišić, painter Vlaho Bukovac, politician Frano Supilo to name a few . The Rector’s, or rather Captain’s, Palace is a Renaissance structure dating from 1555-1558. This is home to the Bogošić library, archive, museum and stone monument collection (including two inscriptions by the Roman Governor Dolabelle from the 1st century) and a graphical collection with over 10,000 pages compiled by Bogišić. The Baroque Church of St. Nicholas, in its current appearance from 1732, contains eight paintings of the old masters and paintings by Vlaho Bukovac in its vault. The Church of Our Lady of Snow and the Franciscan monastery with its Renaissance cloister date back to 1483. From the church, a trail heads through the pine woods to the peak of a nearby hill where the graveyard is located, and which is dominated by the Račić family mausoleum (architecturally designed and sculptured by Ivan Meštrović in 1920-1922). The Kaboga Palace also dates back to the time of Dubrovnik Republic.

Legend on the origin of the name of Cavtat

There is an interesting legend concerning the town name, as it states that two suitors asking the beautiful Cavtislava’s hand in marriage( the daughter of the Epidaurian ruler). Her father would give his approval to either suitor, depending on which one performed the bigger task. One of the suitors, a commander named Stjepan, was required to bring aquaviva from the Vodovađa source in Konavle, while the other, a knight and seafarer, was required to bring a ship brimming with silk from the far corners of the known world. On the day of the festivities, commemmorating the opening of the Epidaurian viaduct, the beautiful Cavtislava was to first drink water from a golden jar, but before she could do so a big lizard jumped out of the water, landing directly onto the girls lap. Cavtislava’s heart failed her and she died immediately. According to tales in the common tongue, the unfortunate seafarer, whose ship was sunk by a huge storm directly in front of Epidaurus, and who therefore was not able to fulfill his task, put the lizard into the viaduct since he could not bear the loss of the girl. In memory of the beautiful Cavtislava arose Cavtat to replace the ravaged town of Epidaurus, destroyed in an earthquake.

Another legend says that Cavtat derives its name from the Old-Croatian verb ‘captiti’ – ‘to blossom’, refering to the yellow juniper, a widespread sparkling plant with a sunny aura. The legend relates its doom to the catastrpohes after which the indestructible Cavtat would come back to life again and anew. “… down there, there’s something adorned with gold blossoming it the reef…”

Brsečine is a small town situated on a hillside above the sea. Of historical note are the Bizzaro summer residence in the town and the Zuzorić summer residence on the seaside in a picturesque cove with a lovely beach and dock. Brsečine is only 20 kilometres from the historical Dubrovnik Old Town.

The island of the same name is part of the Dubrovnik island group (the Elaphite archipelago), situated 7 kilometres northwest of Gruž Harbour. The island has an area of 2.35 km2. Due to the limestone composition of its soil, there are no water springs or permanent superficial water sourses. The climate is mild Mediterranean. The majority of the island is covered by forests and subtropical vegetation. The economy is based on agriculture, wine making, olive growing, carob, pomegranate and citrus plantations, vegetable growing, fisheries, shipping and tourism. There are two settlements on the island, Gornje and Donje Čelo, on the northwestern coast of the island. The island is protected from the northerly bura wind by a limestone ridge; there are sandy and pebble beaches, and parks with numerous species of subtropical plants.

Konavle is a region with particular natural beauties and contrasts: mountain and valley, green hills and naked stone, the blue and the green or, as called by the inhabitants of Konavle, “Gornja” and “Donja Banda”. Fringed by the Konavle mountains in the North, bordered by the Adriatic Sea in the South, it reaches from the entry into the Bay of Kotor to the peninsula of Prevlaka in the East, and in the West, it inclines down to the cosy coves of Obod and Cavtat.

The preserved natural, unique and exceptionally precious rural architecture, numerous monuments of the thousand-year-old history of this area, traditions that are hundreds of years old and have been kept through folklore, the distinctive traditional costumes of Konavle and the Konavle embroidery, the harmony of man’s life and the nature …all of this renders Konavle unique and recognisable.

Geopolitical and Geographic Position

Konavle covers an area of 209 km2, where around 9500 inhabitants live in 33 smaller and larger settlements. Although it is a relatively small area, we can clearly distinguish three completely different parts: the rocky coast, the central part – the field, and the mountain region. The northern mountain part, which borders Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, is dominated by the mountain massif of Sniježnica /1234 m/ and Bjelotina. The fertile Konavle field represents the central part of Konavle; it stretches over 35 kilometres lengthwise and over 12 kilometres breadthways, and the streams of rivers Ljuta, Konavočica and Kopačica merge in its central part. In the central part of the Konavle continent belt, the vertical steep coast of the Konavle rocks is dominating, whereas in the south the Molunat peninsula is the primary attraction with all its coves, while in the west we have Župa bay with its beautiful coves, peninsulas and small islands of Cavtat.

Almost one third of the Konavle area is covered with forests: in the rocky coastal part, the low forests of macchias, pines and cypresses predominate, whereas in the northern mountain part you can also find oak and hornbeam forests next to cypresses and macchias.

The generally defining climate in Konavle is the Mediterranean one: mild winters, autumns warmer and rainier than the springs, dry and hot summers, and the predominating winds are jugo, bora, and the mistral. With regards to the characteristic climate and the typical soil, the most prevent agricultural cultures are the vine and the olive, but other fruit and garden cultures as well, as the stock farming are absolutely represented.

History of Konavle

The name Konavle derives from the Latin word “canale”, “canalis”, in the local dialect “konali”, “kanali”, what is connected with a viaduct, which in the Roman times carried water from Vodovađa to Epidaurum, today’s Cavtat.

Available historical traces are telling about the life in this region, ranging back to Palaeolithic and Neolithic times (over four thousand years before the Common Era). We can track the concrete course of the Konavle history from the fourth and fifth century BC onwards, when this area was populated by Illyrian tribes of the Plereians and the Ardians, while the Romans submitted the Illyrians in the second century BC. At the beginning of the 7th century, Avarian and Slavic tribes break into Europe and also into this region, and founded Epidaurum in 614 (today’s Cavtat), as well as the entire region of Konavle, whereby they displaced the inhabitants from former times, the Illyrians and the Romans. Shortly afterwards, the Croats instigated the Slavs and evicted the Avarians to the Pannonian Valley, while a part of the Croatian tribes stayed in Dalmatia, and one part stayed in the Pannonian Valley. In the following years, the rulers and the states in this area are alternating (Doclea, Rascia, Bosnia), and Konavle is, although only for a short period of time, also independent, namely in the 9th century.

In the 14th century, Konavle comes under the governance of the Dubrovnik Republic, when Dubrovnik’s inhabitants bought the following from former owners, Bosnian great land owner: in 1419, the eastern part of Konavle from Sandaljo Hranić, and in the year 1426 the western part from Radoslav Pavlović, whereat they paid the same amount of 36 000 Perpers (currency unit in Montenegro) respectively. Konavle was of specific importance for the Dubrovnik Republic, not only due to agriculture, stock farming and seafaring, but also because of its strategic value. Therefore, Dubrovnik’s inhabitants were keeping the power skilfully and effectively in their hands during their entire ruling, as well as they did on their other estates, which were lead by a sovereign in Konavle, who resided in a castle in Pridvorje.

With the fall of the Dubrovnik Republic in the year 1807, Konavle comes under French administration, and afterwards under the rule of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, under which it will stay until its decay in 1918 and the formation of the Yugoslavian Kingdom. After World War II, Konavle is an integral part of the socialist Yugoslavia within the borders of the SR (Socialist Republic) of Croatia; and today, after the endured aggression in the Homeland War (from 1991 to 1995), it enjoys the fruits of the independency of the Republic of Croatia.

Kupari has a large sandy beach, modern hotels in the shade of palm trees and oleanders, and was once the top tourism destination in the Dubrovnik region. It was once the location where kuparica (roof tiles) was produced, which covered the roofs of old Dubrovnik.

Above Kupari, the forested hills of Pelegrin rise up, with a small chapel standing guard at its peak. Around it are monuments from the earliest of times. Not far from Kupari, at Čibača, there are ruins dating back to Illyrian and Roman times. The entire Župa region hides many unexplored archaeological localities.

Lopud – an island of lush Mediterranean and subtropical vegetation, beautiful gardens, parks and beaches, Lopud is one of the most developed islands for tourism in the Dubrovnik region. In the past, it was an island of captains, which provided the most sailors for the navy of the Dubrovnik Republic. Also from Lopud was the famed sailor and ship owner Miho Pracat.

According to the Dubrovnik historian Razzi, Lopud had 30 churches in the 16th century, as well as numerous summer residences, several monasteries and many more inhabitants than today. Visible on the island are the ruins of early medieval churches, summer residences and fortresses.

The Franciscan monastery from 1483 with its cloister, defensive towers and walls and its Church of St. Mary of Splica holds much valuable art: the polyptych of Pietro de Giovanni, the triptych from the workshop of Nikola Božidarević, the polyptych of Girolan da Santacroce, paintings by the Flemish master Bassan and more. The Church of Our Lady of Sunjaiz from the 15th century is a valuable cultural monument and contains paintings by Palma the elder, Natalino da Murano, Mateja Junčić and others. The island has good boat connections with Dubrovnik from Gruž Harbour.

An old historical town, one of the most beautiful places in the Župa Dubrovačka, Mlini is situated along the banks of the steeply falling Zavrelje River, and boasts sandy beaches and inlets with clean shallow water. The ample humidity and warm climate have turned this town into fragrant parks and gardens with all kinds of plants and vegetation.

It received its name from the mlini (mills) that were once turned by the Zavrelje River. The town is filled with historical monuments and legends. According to one such legend, St. Hilarius burnt the Epidaurous dragon on the shores of Mlini in the 4th century, thus saving Epidaurum from earthquake, evil, barbarian attack and ravage. In honour of their saviour, the Church of St. Illar was erected, and he became the patron saint of the area. The Chapel of St. Rok on the coast and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Krstac are of historical importance as well.

An ancient graveyard is located on the hills above the seashore. The tombstones tell the tale of the oldest families of Župa Dubrovačka from the Roman period of the old Astarea.

Mlini is one of the most developed tourist places in the Dubrovnik area, with lovely hotels, situated in the brightest ambient, at the foot of the historical Spilan hill, virtually grown into the architecture of the hill and its forested rocks. There is also the possibility of accommodation in a home environment, in the lovely homes and numerous villas.

Molunat is a fishing and tourist settlement in the extreme south of the Croatian coastline at the distance of 40 km SE from Dubrovnik and 20 km from the airport and from Cavtat. It is connected by bus lines three times a day. Molunat is located at the distance of 12 nautical miles from Cavtat and 18 nautical miles from Dubrovnik.

The name Molunat has Illyrian and Greek root (molos – the port) referring to ancient ports of Mali and Veliki Molunat protected against bad weather conditions. There are many traces of various archaelogical sites on the sea floor, on the mainland, on its walls and fortifications. The Molunat area has an ecologically preserved nature ecosystem with numerous species of mediterranean medicinal herbs. Its indented coastline is full of coves around the peninsula, the two islets with shallow and clear sea with plenty of fish. Veliki and Mali Škoj and Gora od Molunta are covered by dense macchia, holm-oaks, cypress trees and the umbrella-pines. One of the more picturesque towns in the Dubrovnik region and the gentlest bay over 2 kilometres in length, Slano is a must-see on the Adriatic coast with beautiful beaches, dense pine woods and olive groves and a long cultural tradition. There are also many monuments, some dating back to ancient times.

The Franciscan Church of St. Jerome, one of the nicest in the region, is from the 15th century. Also well preserved are the Rector’s Palace from the Dubrovnik Republic era and the summer residence of the well known Ohmučević family, whose members were skilled sailors and writers. The road from Slano leads to Zavala in Herzegovina, the location of the famed ‘Vjetrenica’ karst cave (14 kilometres away).

Slano is the biggest and most important small town and a community centre. Traditionally, the villages in the immediate hinterland are municipally linked to it, forming a constituent part of the Community of the Dubrovnik Coast. Slano is 30 kilometres from the centre of Dubrovnik, situated in a spacious and beautiful bay of the same name, formerly a flooded valley, next to the walled shoreline, opposite the island of Šipan and divided by the Koločep Channel. Slano is attractive due to its numerous pebble beaches, lush vegetation and pleasant climate. It was once on the line-boat route to Dubrovnik and Korčula, and also on local routes to other smaller ports and jetties on the Dubrovnik Coast and on the peninsula of Pelješac (Zaton, Orašac, Trsteno, Doli, Ston, etc.). There are also boat services to the neighbouring islands and ports in the broader area (Šipan, Mljet, etc ).

The bay is protected from the wind, making it an ideal haven and anchorage for ships, boats and yachts. Its economy is based on tourism with accommodation provided by the hotels “Admiral” and “Osmine”, private pensions, apartments, campsites and other venues; also on agriculture (olives, vines, fruit), fishing and other marine activities.

Šipan is the largest island in the Elaphite archipelago, and is situated 17 kilometres from Dubrovnik. It is separated from the mainland by the Koločep Channel; 16.5 km2 (9.1 km long, 2.6 km wide). Between two limestone ridges, the taller (Velji Point, 243 m) on the northeast and the lower on the southwest, there is a valley where olives, prunes, vineyards, carob, almonds, oranges, and citrus fruits are grown. Tourism has a special place on the island. The sunken portions of the valley extend to the northwest to create the Šipanska Luka (Port of Šipan) inlet and to the southeast to create the inlet of Suđurađ. On the southeast extension of the tallest ridges is the small island of Ruda.

The main towns are Šipanska Luka (Luka) and Suđurađ. The island has ferry line connections to Dubrovnik. The island was first mentioned by its current name in 1371. The remains of Roman villas have been discovered in Šipanska Luka. There are numerous architectural monuments from the Middle Ages: the remains of Church of St. Peter on Velji Point (11th century), the Church of St. Ivan with its frescos (11th century, expanded in the 15th century) in Silova Sela, and the pre-Romantic Church of St. Michael (Mihovil) from the 11th century, a Romantic-Gothic house, a Gothic tower, and the Renaissance Church of the Holy Spirit from 1569, all built as part of the Benedictine monastery in Pakljena. During the 15th century on Šipan, summer homes were built by government officials in Dubrovnik.

At Šipanska Luka, there is the late Gothic Church of St. Stephan with a painting of Pantaleone (second half of the 15th century), and the Sorkočević family summer home stands out in particular (15th century). In the 15th century, a Gothic Rector’s Palace was constructed above Šipanska Luka, bearing bifora on its facade (an inscription from 1450 is written above the Gothic courtyard gates).
