Your Disney Cruise stateroom will be your home away from home for a few days and nights. It is also an important factor in the overall cost of your cruise.

What You Should Know about Disney Cruise Staterooms

Disney Cruise Line staterooms are tailored especially to families.

From split bathrooms, to bathtubs, to beds that pop out of the ceiling, to extra storage space and more, Disney has thought of everything!

In fact, their standard cabins are about 25% bigger than standard cabins on other cruise lines. Don’t get me wrong, they are still much smaller than a hotel room, but bigger than the cruise industry average.

Whatever your budget and taste, Disney Cruise Line has accommodations for every traveller. Stateroom options range from cozy and comfortable to grand and luxurious.

What Comes Standard in Every Stateroom?

First, it’s good to know what comes standard in every Disney Cruise Line stateroom:

• A queen bed (not two twins pushed together)
• Seating area
• Desk area with chair and dedicated lighting
• Privacy curtains that separate sleeping and seating areas
• Storage: 2 closets, under bed storage space, dresser drawers
• Hooks for towels
• Hangers (if you need more, ask your stateroom host/hostess)
• A mini refrigerator
• A hairdryer
• Television (satellite) and in-room movies
• Full length mirror
• In-room safes for wallets, passports, phones etc
• Electrical outlets
• “Wave Phones” that allow you to call and text both onboard and at Castaway Cay
• H20 Plus -branded shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion and soap
• Housekeeping services twice a day—Morning cleaning and nightly turndown service
• Life jackets for each person
• Blackout curtains (staterooms with exterior windows)
• Split bathrooms (in most staterooms)
• Bathtubs (in most staterooms)

About those Bathtubs

I love the fact that Disney Cruise Line has a bathtub in almost every stateroom! (Accessible rooms have roll-in showers instead of tubs.)

This is not the norm for most cruise lines.

With little kids a tub is kind of a must so it’s nice Disney thought of it all. Naturally they aren’t as big as your tub at home but they should do the trick for your kiddos.

For adults? I’d probably stick with the shower.

What is Not Included in Your Stateroom

Now that we covered what is in the stateroom, here are some items that are not included :

• Coffeemaker
• Ironing board

The Four Kinds of Disney Cruise Stateroom

The staterooms on Disney Cruise Line ships can be broken down into four types:

Within each of these 4 stateroom types, there are a number of “ categories ” available.

These “categories” indicate a variance within that room type such as standard or deluxe , a type of verandah, or the location - by deck or area of the ship (forward, midship, or aft).

What Do These Category Numbers Mean?

When it’s time to reserve a cabin, you’ll notice each Disney Cruise stateroom has a “category” and “number” assigned to it.

Example: 5A - Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

These can be confusing until you learn these simple rules:

1) The higher the “number”, the less expensive the stateroom

Staterooms start at category 11 (inside staterooms) and descend to category 4 (verandah staterooms). The Concierge is the most expensive and doesn’t start with a number at all.

This is handy to know because if you compare a Category 7 stateroom with a Category 6, you know at a glance that the 7 is less expensive.

2) The “letter” indicates a location on the ship

For example, 9B is a mid-ship oceanview stateroom while 9C is forward-ship oceanview stateroom. Same floor plan, just maybe on a different deck or different part of the ship.  

If there are multiple sub-categories available within a category - such as 9A, 9B, 9C, 9D - then “A” will be the most expensive and most desirable and “D” the least expensive. Of course, “most desirable” is completely subjective so take it with a grain of salt and the price difference between the subcategories is fairly minimal.

How Many Guests Can Sleep in a Stateroom?

Most regular staterooms sleeps 3-4 with a handful that sleep 5. There are also Concierge staterooms that can sleep up to 7. If you have 5+ guests in your party, check out Bonus Tip #1 below.

BONUS TIPS FOR SELECTING A STATEROOM

1) big family consider connecting staterooms.

If your group has more than 4 guests, you'll have a couple of different options for staterooms.

• A Family Oceanview stateroom or a Suite (sleeps 5 to 7 guests)
• Two connecting staterooms (sleeps up to 8 guests)

Connecting staterooms are two rooms that have a door between the adjoining wall.

You can leave the door always open to keep an eye on the little ones in the other room, or close it for privacy. It’s kinda like having your own little two-bedroom suite but for less moo-lah.

Which brings me to my next point...

Many times, getting two connecting staterooms is cheaper than one Family Oceanview stateroom or Suite. Crunch the numbers and see what will work best for your family.

NOTE: Just remember that you must have at least one adult booked in each stateroom.

How many connecting staterooms are on each ship?

There are 137 connecting staterooms on both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.

On both the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, there are over 500 connecting staterooms.

How do you know which rooms connect?

When selecting a stateroom, look for the little “doors” that open in between the cabins. If there are doors on the adjoining wall, that means it’s a connecting room.

For example, in the photo below, cabins 7064 and 7066 connect.

2) View of Beach at Castaway Cay

Want a view of the beach when in dock at Castaway Cay ? 

Book a room on the starboard (right) side of the ship.

Disney ships will usually back into Castaway Cay’s dock, so the port (left) side cabins will face the dock and the tram area while the starboard (right) side cabins will face the beaches on Castaway Cay.

Just know, this is not a guarantee.

Sometimes there are conditions that will require docking in the opposite direction.

3) If You’re On the Fence About a Verandah

First things first...let's start with this question:

What is a verandah?

A verandah stateroom on a Disney Cruise Line ship is simply a room with a balcony attached.

It is a wonderful experience to stand on your verandah and breathe in the fresh ocean air.

A DCL verandah also offers extra visibility when at port or sailing through a particularly scenic area.

If you’re debating whether to add the additional expense of a verandah (instead of an oceanview) cabin, here are some points to consider in favor of a verandah:

• Verandahs are more valuable on cruises where there is a lot of scenery. Alaska, Panama, and Mediterranean itineraries, for example.
• If you have a young child that will require a lot of naps in your stateroom, having a verandah gives the parent a place to escape to look at the view, read a book, and enjoy some room service while you wait with the little one.

4) To Avoid Noise, Have Staterooms All Around You

By booking a stateroom that has other cabins above, below and to all sides, you're able to insulate yourself from any possible ship noise (laundry, sundecks, engine, restaurants, theatres, etc).  

5) Request a Crib When You Book

• I’ve sailed on every Disney cruise ship and visited Disney’s private island multiple times. My favorite Disney experiences with my family have been Norway and Pixar-themed cruises.

Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with family vacations at sea, so you might think that every Disney cruise in 2024 will be a good choice for families. And having sailed on every one of Disney’s cruise ships myself, I can say the simple answer is yes, that’s absolutely true. But some Disney cruise experiences hold an extra special place in my family’s heart, and they’ve made me realize that certain Disney cruises can go above and beyond even DCL’s usual family-friendly standard.

I’m thinking about when we met Disney’s Frozen friends in person on a Norway sailing, or laughed to tears over dinner with Crush the Sea Turtle (“cha dude!”), or completed a 5K with my daughter on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay . The Best Disney Cruises for Families in 2024

There will be no shortage of these kinds of opportunities on Disney Cruise Line (DCL) in 2024. From being among the first to visit Disney’s brand-new private island destination to enjoying an immersive Pixar-themed day at sea to setting sail on the maiden voyage of Disney’s newest ship , here are the Disney cruise experiences I think will go above and beyond in 2024.

1. Disney Magic to Lighthouse Point, DCL’s Newest Private Island Destination

One thing my family looks forward to during any Disney cruise is a stop at DCL’s private island, Castaway Cay. In 2024, Disney Cruise Line will unveil its second private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. And I can’t wait to see how they plan to outdo the already incredible Castaway Cay experience.

FAMILY CRUISES: 7 Best Cruise Lines for Families (and Their 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships)

Similar to when Disney created its Aulani resort in Hawaii , Disney Imagineers have been working with local artists and cultural experts to design an authentic Bahamian island experience at Lighthouse Point. Curvilinear buildings are meant to evoke scattered seashells along the shore, and a Bahamian Art and Culture Pavilion will feature special programs and local artists that celebrate Bahama traditions.

2. Alaska and Australia Cruises on the Disney Wonder in 2024

When my youngest daughter graduated from high school, my wife and I asked where she wanted to go for our family vacation to celebrate her milestone . Her top choice was Alaska. In the summer months, Disney Cruise Line positions one of its smaller ships, the Disney Wonder , out west so families can take  week-long sailings from Vancouver to the “Last Frontier.” Along the way, you can experience majestic wildlife and stunning scenery while calling on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap.

But that’s not all the Disney Wonder gets up to! In 2023, Disney also began offering Australia and New Zealand cruises onboard the ship, and that will continue in 2023 and 2024. Disney Cruise Line has announced a new season of sailings in the region from October 2024 through February 2025.

The Disney Wonder is one of DCL’s original class of ships, and with a capacity of 2,713 passengers it remains one of the line’s most intimate vessels. That’s a reason to love it. Both the Wonder and its sister ship, Disney Magic , are especially great Disney cruise options in 2024 if your family is new to cruising . Far from being a drawback, the smaller size makes it less likely to feel overwhelming to first-timers.

3. European Vacations on the Disney Dream

In 2023, Disney Cruise Line sent the  Disney Dream across the Atlantic for the first time. The ship will head back to Europe in 2024 with summer cruises in the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, British Isles, Iceland, and Norwegian Fjords. These are the best 2024 Disney Cruises for experiencing new ports of call like Valencia, Spain; Haugesund, Norway; and Hamburg, Germany; along with three Mediterranean destinations (Catania, Italy; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Valletta, Malta) that Disney will visit for the first time since 2014.

In June, the  Disney Dream sails from Civitavecchia (Rome)  with stops in Naples and three different Greek Islands, including Mykonos and Crete. My family sailed on Disney’s inaugural Norwegian Fjords cruise in 2015, and it was hands down our best family vacation because of the Disney-specific experiences no other cruise line can offer, such as Frozen ‘’s’s Anna and Elsa posing for pictures at a Norwegian Village museum in Ålesund.

4. Disney Cruise Line’s Private Island Trifecta on the Disney Fantasy

Many fans of Disney Cruise Line’s private island get particularly excited when itineraries include a Castaway Cay “double dip,” i.e., two stops at Castaway Cay. But in 2024, the Disney Fantasy ventures on a seven-night itinerary  that calls on Disney’s private islands not once, not twice, but three times with a stop at Castaway Cay and two visits to the brand-new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

I love Disney’s Castaway Cay and have enjoyed so many relaxing stops to the island. I especially remember learning the “stingray shuffle” and holding stingrays during Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure. I love that this 2024 Disney cruise will give families plenty of time to explore Disney’s brand-new private island destination on the southernmost tip of Eleuthera without overlooking a day at the old favorite.

5. Disney Wish Theme Park and Cruise Vacation

The Disney Wish is DCL’s newest ship (for now), debuting in July 2022 and offering  three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Florida . The close proximity of Port Canaveral to Walt Disney World makes it easy to combine an Orlando theme park vacation with a Disney Cruise.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: 6 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do on a Disney Cruise  

Disney land and sea vacations are the best of both worlds for families with theme park lovers who want to go, go, go, and other family members looking for a more laidback experience. My advice is to head to the theme parks first, get tired out from the walking, rides, and stimulation, and then sail off on a four-night cruise to decompress. My wife and I enjoyed the most expansive stateroom ever when we sailed on the Disney Wish last summer and it couldn’t have been more relaxing.

6. Themed Cruises – Pixar, Marvel, and Holidays

In January I had the opportunity to experience Pixar Day at Sea , Disney Cruise Line’s newest themed cruise, on the Disney Fantasy . In my review for FamilyVacationist, I called it an “ overflowing toy box of fun ” and I’m excited for more families to experience it on a Disney cruise in 2024. The cruise was packed with so many Pixar character meets, themed-activities, special shows, foods, and treats that some of it spilled into additional days at sea. In 2024, Pixar Day at Sea returns to the Disney Fantasy  on seven-night Caribbean sailings from January through March.

SET SAIL: These 6 Cruise Lines Offer the Best Themed Cruises  

Disney’s themed cruise days aren’t limited to Pixar, either. There’s a Marvel Day at Sea on five-night Disney Dream cruises departing Fort Lauderdale from January through March, and when the festive season rolls around most of the ships offer holiday sailings with  Halloween on the High Seas  and  Very Merrytime cruises.

I was so impressed with the Halloween tree in the ship’s atrium when my family sailed on a Halloween cruise. Over the course of the cruise, the tree “bloomed” with spooky Jack-o-lanterns. In addition, Disney characters were decked out in costumes, there was trick-or-treating, and other special activities. And of course Very Merrytime cruises have a tree-lighting ceremony, Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party, carolers, special drinks and treats, and appearances by the guest of honor for the cruise, Santa Claus.

7. Disney Treasure Sets Course for Adventure

Last but not least, Disney Treasure joins the Disney Cruise Line fleet with its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. Adventure is the theme for Disney’s sixth cruise ship with spaces and entertainment inspired by Aladdin , Coco , Zootopia , Jungle Cruise , even 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

BEFORE YOU BOOK: Everything You Need to Know about River Cruises in the U.S.  

As a fan of the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise ride and Skipper Canteen restaurant, I can’t wait to get immersed in the kitschy 1930s adventure vibe onboard the Disney Treasure . The ship will sail seven-night itineraries to the eastern and western Caribbean and have a theater-in-the-round restaurant at the Plaza de Coco as well as a cinematic dining experience at Worlds of Marvel. Can Disney Cruise Line Staterooms Accommodate Families of 5?

If you’re considering a Disney Cruise and have a larger family, one area of hesitation is whether or not Disney can comfortably accommodate your family size.  Though Walt Disney World has caught on over the years and has increasingly added accommodation like villas and family suites to accommodate slightly larger families, it’s still slim pickings when it comes to cruising.  That’s why we thought we’d provide a guide for families of 5 or larger!

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy Staterooms

As the two newer ships in Disney Cruise Line’s fleet, you’ll find stateroom options here that are a bit more family-friendly. Those stateroom categories that can accommodate a family of 5 includes: 

Category 8: Deluxe Family Ocean View Stateroom:

These rooms come with a queen-size bed, single convertible sofa, wall pull-down bed or upper pull-down berth. They also feature a split bath with round-tub and shower in most.   These rooms average about 241 sq. ft and come and are located on Decks 5-9. 

Category 4: Deluxe Family Ocean View Stateroom with Verandah

These are Disney Cruise Line’s largest verandah staterooms before you start to get into suite and concierge options. They come in at 299 sq ft (including the Verandah) and come with a queen-size bed, single convertible sofa, wall pull-down bed or upper pull-down berth. They also feature a split bath with round-tub and show in most.   These rooms average about 299 sq. ft  (including verandah) and are located on decks 7-10. 

Concierge Level and Suites

The two categories listed above are the most common for families of 5. However, those looking to splurge may also want to consider the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah (Category V) which comes with Club Level amenities, the Concierge 1-Bedroom Suites with Verandah (Category T) or the Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah (Category R) all of which accommodate 5. 

All of the other stateroom categories on the Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy including Inside Staterooms (Categories 11 and 10), Outside Staterooms (9) or Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms (Categories 5,6 and 7) can old sleep between 3-4 guests.

Disney Magic and Disney Wonder

If you’re considering cruises to the Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Panama Canal, and Europe, chances are you’ll be aboard one of Disney Cruise Line original ships, the Magic or Wonder.  Unfortunately for larger families, these ships don’t have quite as many options as the Dream and Fantasy with NONE of the outside staterooms able to accommodate families of 5. 

This means the only stateroom (that isn’t a suite or concierge room) that can accommodate a family of 5 is the Category 4 staterooms. 

Similar to those on the Dream and Fantasy, these staterooms come in at 304 sq ft (including the Verandah) and come with a queen-size bed, single convertible sofa, wall pull-down bed or upper pull-down berth. They also feature a split bath.   You’ll find them on Deck 8. 

After that, unless you want to split guests up over two rooms, your only other options when sailing on the Magic or Wonder are  Concierge One Bedroom Suites with Verandah (Category T)  or Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah (Category R). Unlike the Dream or Fantasy, there are no Category V (Concierge Family Oceanview With Verandah) rooms on either of these ships.  However, there is also the Concierge 2 Bedroom Suite with Verandah (Category S) which can sleep up to 7 guests. 

All of the other stateroom categories on the Disney Magic or Disney Fantasy including Inside Staterooms (Categories 11 and 10), Outside Staterooms (9) or Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms (Categories 4, 5,6 and 7) can only sleep between 3-4 guests.

Would It Be Cheaper to Book Two Staterooms For My Family of 5? 

The answer to this question depends on a myriad of factors including the particular cost of your sailing, how far out you’re booking and what stateroom category you are interested in. However, if you’re debating between having the whole family in 2 inside staterooms or one outside stateroom that sleeps 5, in my experience, it is typically more affordable to have everyone in one stateroom. 

For instance, if you look at the 3-night Bahamian Sailing out of Port Canaveral on September 3, 2020, the cost of having a Family of 5 in one Category 8B (outside) stateroom is $3474.55.  The cost of splitting that family up over two inside staterooms still comes out at $3799.81 and you lose the view.  

The reason for this is that Disney Cruise Line charges the first two guests in each stateroom the full fare and any subsequent guest in a stateroom at a 1/2 off fare. If you spread your family across two staterooms you are essentially doubling up on the members of your family that are paying the full fare.  That being said, larger families may find having your entire gang in one stateroom a bit claustrophobic making shelling out a wee bit more for two staterooms the more favorable option.

Stateroom Categories: Explained

It’s just as simple as booking a stateroom, right? As you start to shop for your next cruise, options abound and seriously confuse. Let’s make some sense of ‘all that is stateroom’ on Disney Cruise Line.

There are four general stateroom categories : Concierge, Oceanview with Verandah, Oceanview and Inside . Within each category and within each ship, there are different options to choose from.

Inside (Categories: 10, 11)

• Located on the Interior of the ship
• No exterior views *Dream/Fantasy “Magic Portholes”
• 169-204 sqft

Oceanview (Categories: 8, 9)

• One large or two small portholes
• Exterior/ocean views
• 204-241 sqft

Verandah (Categories: 4, 5, 6, 7)

• Private balconies
• Floor to ceiling windows
• 246-299 sqft

Concierge (Categories: V, T, S, R)

• Suites with balconies
• Some with separate living/sleeping areas
• 306-1781 sq ft
• Concierge services

There are now  six stateroom types : Standard, Deluxe, Deluxe Family, Deluxe Family Concierge, 1- or 2- Bedroom Suites, Royal Suite. Your family size and space preferences typically play a major role in selecting stateroom type. Listed below are the stateroom type differentiators:

Standard (Inside Category: 11)

• Traditional bathroom

Deluxe (Inside Category: 10, Oceanview Category: 9, Verandah Category: 5, 6, 7)

Deluxe Family (Oceanview Category: 8, Verandah Category: 4)

• Sleep up to 5

Deluxe Family Concierge (Concierge Category: V)

• Concierge service

1- or 2- Bedroom Suites (Concierge Categories: S, T)

• Split living/sleeping
• Large balconies

Royal Suite (Concierge Category: R)

• Each ship has 2
• Luxurious, spacious
• Large balcony with private whirlpool tub (Dream and Fantasy)

What’s the difference between a Category 4A and 4E? The letters A, B, C, D, and E generally distinguish where on the ship the staterooms are located, with the letter A being the most desired location, for example, midship on a higher deck.

Navigator Verandah’s Category 7A

The Magic and Wonder category 7A staterooms only sleep 3

The Fantasy and Dream category 7A’s sleep 3-4

But what about this Category 8A on the Dream & Fantasy? There are 12 of these rooms on each ship. These are different as they are larger than the average Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom, have a split room set-up BUT no split bath .

Just to keep things interesting, there are a small number of very specific stateroom categories boasting distinct features:

Obstructed/Limited Ocean Views: These rooms have portholes with – you guessed it – partially obstructed views. These rooms are less expensive than their unobstructed-viewed counterparts. Found: Oceanview Category 9C and 9D on the Disney Dream/Fantasy

Oversized Verandah Rooms: Extra balcony space and people rave about these staterooms in our Facebook group discussions. Found: Verandah Category 4E and 5E on the Disney Dream/Fantasy

Navigator’s Verandah: Enclosed verandah with open air porthole. Found: Verandah Category 7A

Whitewall Verandah: The verandah has a solid white wall from deck to railing instead of the standard clear view throughout. Found: Verandah Category 5E, 6A, 6B

Booking with Restrictions? We Got You

IGT = Inside Stateroom with Restrictions OGT = Outside Stateroom with restrictions VGT = Guaranteed Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

When booking these restricted-fare category staterooms, please note the following:

• New bookings only. Existing reservations cannot be modified to these new categories.
• You are reserving a stateroom within the selected stateroom type: Inside, Oceanview or Verandah*.
• Disney Cruise Line will assign your specific stateroom at a later time, based on remaining availability.
• Specific stateroom requests will not be accommodated.
• Full payment is required at the time of booking for all Guests and is non-refundable.
• Sail date and stateroom category changes are not permitted.
• The stateroom offer cannot be combined with any other discounted or promotional offer.
• Full legal names of all Guests are required at time of booking and no name changes are allowed.

* Most Verandah staterooms include a private verandah with a clear plexiglass wall; some may include a solid white wall depending upon location. A limited number of Oceanview and Verandah staterooms may include a partially obstructed view.

Selecting “Choose Guaranty” guarantees the ship, sailing date and rate. A Category XXX stateroom will be assigned by the time documents are received. Selecting “Choose Guaranty” does not guarantee the stateroom will be on a particular deck or, for multiple staterooms, that the staterooms will be located near each other.

GTY reservations have no restrictions as it is a normal booking. Same rules apply as they do to any booking that has an assigned stateroom.

**Also note that you can be assigned an accessible stateroom without a split bath.

If your family consists of four or fewer people, selecting a stateroom on the Disney Cruise Line ships is a straightforward affair – your party can fit into most DCL staterooms. If you have five or more people in your traveling party, things get a little more complicated. Here’s what you need to know:

Many Stateroom Categories Won’t Accommodate a Party of Five or More

Take a look, for example, at the deck plans for the Disney Dream and Fantasy. A quick skim of the room floor plans at the top will show you that all staterooms in categories 11, 10, 9, 7, 6, and 5 are off limits for your group if you all want to stay together. The same floor plans shows you that if you have a party of six or more, you won’t be able to stay in one room together at all on these ships. (Click to enlarge the image.)

If you’re a party of five, and you want to stay together in one cabin, your only options on these ships are stateroom categories 3, 4, and 8, plus the pricey concierge categories 1, 2, and 3.

If you Have a Party of Five, Even if You Can All Fit into One Room, You Might Not Want To

On the Dream and Fantasy, a category 4 stateroom, which can accommodate five guests, runs approximately 300 square feet, including the verandah. At the full capacity of five guests, that gives each person 60 square feet, some of which is bathroom and outdoor space, and most of which is consumed by the bed and other furniture. Also on the Dream and Fantasy, a category 8 stateroom (an oceanview room with no verandah), which allows five guests, is approximately 240 square feet total, or 48 square feet per person, much of which is consumed by the bathroom and furniture.

And consider that you’ll have five people’s worth of luggage to store, devices to charge, and toiletries to contain, and you’ll soon realize how quickly cozy can turn into cranky.

If you’ve never been on a cruise before, as you make your stateroom selection, one thing to consider is that you may use your stateroom differently than a hotel room at Walt Disney World, for example. I’ve been on plenty of Walt Disney World vacations where I left my hotel room at 7:30am and returned at 11:00pm to just to shower and sleep. I was too far away and too occupied in the parks to go back to my room.

This type of room avoidance is unlikely on a cruise. There’s certainly plenty to do on the ships, but chances are you’ll be in and out of your room much more often on board than you would be at theme parks, even if only to change clothes. On board a ship, guests often find a need to change frequently. On a typical day, you might be in and out of exercise clothes, swim clothes, casual attire, and formal dinner attire, then back to swim or casual attire. If one person wants to nap and another person needs to change, there’s not much room for quiet and privacy with only 48 square feet to call your own.

Splitting Your Party Into Two Staterooms May Save Your Sanity

If you’re putting five guests into one category 4 stateroom, for example, your sleep surfaces will be one queen sized bed, one twin-size sleeper sofa, a twin-size Murphy bed, and a twin-size bed that pulls down from the ceiling. This set-up requires that two of the guests sleep in the same bed. If you’re traveling with adults who don’t want to share a sleep surface this could be problematic. This arrangement might also be tight for any guest who is physically larger than average. Some teen boys may find that the twin-size beds, particularly the top bunk, are uncomfortably small.

I have three daughters who all like to take their time in the bathroom. Even with DCL’s split-bath (shower/sink in one compartment, toilet/sink in a different compartment) arrangement, we have A LOT of grumbles about who is taking too long to get ready. And again, there is often more need to get ready on a cruise ship than their would be in some other vacation situations.

Having more sleep surfaces and more bathroom space could be the key family harmony. This can be accomplished by booking your family of five or more into two cabins rather than one.

Contrast this with putting five guests into two category 11 staterooms. This combination would give the party two queen beds, two twin sleeper sofas, and likely two twin beds that pull down from the ceiling. This gives your group an additional adult-sized sleep surface, which can be helpful if the members of the party are friends rather than family, if the guests are physically larger, or if there is more than one guest with a fear of heights who doesn’t want to sleep in a bunk-like situation. And – while the category 11 staterooms don’t have a split bathroom, they do have two showers, which may be better for some party configurations.

The Finances of Two Staterooms May Not Be Different Than One Stateroom

Note: Stateroom pricing is quite variable. The same room might be a drastically different price depending on your sail date and the date on which you book the cruise. So that I’m comparing apples to apples, the prices I’m about to note were all found on the same date for the same cruise. You might encounter different pricing if you conduct your own search.

For the April 6, 2023 4-Night Bahamian Cruise from Miami on the Dream, putting five guests into one stateroom (two adults and three kids, ages 15, 10, and 8) involves a minimum cost of about $7,400 in an Oceanview stateroom, or about $7,850 in a Verandah stateroom. (An inside stateroom is not an option with this party composition.)

If you instead book these folks into two inside staterooms, you can get a price of about $7,900. This is less than $100 different than putting everyone into one Verandah stateroom to get more sleep surfaces, more square footage, and an additional shower.

Losing window or verandah access might be a deal-breaker for some families, but a compromise might be to get one inside cabin and one with outdoor access.

When you’re playing around with different stateroom combinations, be aware that the first two people booked into a stateroom always pay the adult rate, regardless of age. If you have young kids and teens, you may be able to save a few dollars by making sure the youngest child is booked as the third person in a room (rather than the second) so that they get charged the child rate instead of inadvertently forcing them into the adult rate.

You Can Make Two Staterooms Feel Like One Room

Families with young children might worry about putting little ones in a different cabin. Never fear! Break out your magnifying glass for a look at the deck plans and you’ll see that many of the staterooms on the Disney ships are connected by an internal door. (Look for the little V-shaped symbol between the rooms to indicate that the rooms are connected. Seriously, you may need a magnifying glass to see them.) Connecting rooms are available at most stateroom levels, from standard category 11 inside staterooms, on up to concierge suites. There are even a few concierge rooms which allow more than two rooms to be connected.

Connecting rooms are exactly what they sound like, two rooms connected by an internal door. Opening the internal door effectively turns those cabins into a multi-room suite. In addition to adding space, selecting connecting rooms gives you a real door in addition to the flimsy internal “privacy curtains” present in most rooms.

Connecting Rooms are Not All Alike

In most instances, connecting rooms are listed at the same category level. For example, an 11B is connected to an 11B or a 4C is connected to a 4C. However, there are a few unique situations in which staterooms of different categories connected. For example, on the Dream and Fantasy, stateroom 7188 (a 6B cabin) can connect to 7190 (a 5E cabin). These staterooms are quite similar, but a bit of tinkering with various combinations might save you a few dollars.

The most common situation in which you’ll find dissimilar staterooms connected occurs when one of the staterooms has a handicap accessible designation. For example, on the Dream and Fantasy, you’ll see handicap accessible stateroom 6186 (a 9A deluxe oceanview cabin) connected to 6188 (a 6B deluxe oceanview cabin with a verandah). For many parties, this would be a nice balance of economy and outdoor access, with one slightly less expensive room connected to a slightly more expensive room with an additional amenity. Of course, the priority access in this situation should go to guests who need the handicap room for medical reasons, but if theses rooms become available for general booking, it could be the best of two worlds.

If you’re looking for odd stateroom combinations, you may benefit from the expertise of a veteran cruise specialist travel agent who understands the nuances of the various options.

Your Options Expand Further if You Don’t Need Your Rooms to Connect

While parents of small or special needs children will likely want access to them via a connecting door, families with older kids, or a party of friends rather than family, might not need their rooms to be connected. For example, when my daughters were older teens, I liked to have them in a room fairly close to my husband and me, but they were experienced enough travelers that I didn’t absolutely need them to be in a connected room.

If you just want adjacent but not connected rooms, the stateroom type combinations increase dramatically. For example, on the Dream and Fantasy, cabin 9010 is an oceanview stateroom next to (but not connected to) 9012, a stateroom with a navigator’s verandah. This could be a good combination savings and outdoor access for my family, particularly if something like the connecting door handicap room combinations were not available.

There are also many families who put teens in an inside stateroom with the parents in an oceanview or verandah room directly across the hall (for example something like 9521 and 9518 on the Dream or Fantasy). Again, this allows cost savings in one room with better amenities in the other.

Larger Parties Should Get Familiar with the “Add Another Stateroom” Button

A group of six or more will get error messages when trying to book the entire party into one stateroom. Any larger party will want to get familiar with the “Add Another Stateroom” button as they explore their booking options.

Not All Age Combinations Will Work When Booking Staterooms

While getting two rooms for your larger party is often an elegant solution, it may not be possible in all cases. Disney Cruise Line requires that at least one guest age 18 or over be booked into every stateroom. Additionally, all guests ages 17 and younger must be booked into a stateroom with someone 21 or older.

This is no problem if, for example, two adults are traveling with three kids. Two get two rooms, you would book an adult with one child into one cabin, and the other adult and two children into the second cabin. However, if one adult is traveling with four children, then they would not be eligible to be booked into two staterooms. On the Dream and Fantasy, their only option would be one category 8 room or a one category 4 or higher room, assuming one is available. This is true regardless of whether the rooms are connecting and regardless of the age of the children. A single parent of four teens would have to stay with them in one stateroom rather than two.

This rule has other impacts as well. I once considered taking two of my teen daughters and a friend of theirs on a DCL cruise. While my daughters are quite close with their friend, I didn’t think she would be entirely comfortable sleeping/changing/relaxing in the same room with me (a non-family member) for a week. I wanted to get a room for the girls (again, well-behaved older teens) connected to a room for me to give everyone a measure of privacy, but Disney would not allow me to do this. We ended up scrapping our plans.

You Don’t Have to Sleep Where You’re Booked

I mentioned earlier that some families put their teens in an inside stateroom with the parents across the hall in a verandah or oceanview stateroom. Given the 18-and-over rule, you’ll see that this is not allowed from a booking perspective. However, once you’re actually on the ship, the rule is not enforced. If you’re a family traveling with more than one stateroom, Guest Services at the ship will be more than happy to code your Key to the World Cards (room keys) so that each key opens all the linked rooms. This means that on the ship, family members are free to mix and match their sleeping locations among the reserved rooms. Even though it’s not booked that way, parents can sleep in one room, with the kids in another. Most stateroom attendants will automatically ask you how you want your rooms configured and where people will really be sleeping.

Think About Your Castaway Club Status

In addition to thinking about the ages of who gets booked into which room, your ability to book excursions and fine dining may be impacted by who is booked into which stateroom.

For example, during one family vacation, my twins and I had a higher Castaway Club (DCL loyalty program) rating than my husband and other daughter (lucky us). My kids were all older, so we had no pricing issues with who got paper-booked into which cabin. However, we did run into a problem when trying to book excursions for that cruise. We inadvertently booked me and the higher Castaway status twins into one room, while my husband and lower status Castaway status daughter were in the other room. Excursion and dining booking access dates are based on the Castaway level of the highest status person in each room. Because we had stacked the deck with all the high-status family members in one of our rooms, half of our party was able to make excursion reservations before the other half. If we had arranged the booking slightly differently, booking one of the higher-status kids into the room with her dad, we would have been able to make excursion reservations for both rooms at the same time.

The excursions we were selecting were not in short supply, so as a practical matter it ended up as a non-issue, but if you were looking to book an extremely popular or scarce excursion, then you might be in trouble.

Additional Ways to Save Money on DCL for Larger Families

In addition to tinkering with different stateroom configurations, larger families (and anyone else looking to economize), may want to look closely at their travel dates. Your travel date can be the largest factor in the overall price of your Disney Cruise vacation. The price might be double on the same ship, on the same itinerary, if you choose a Christmas week voyage over one in, say, late September. Choosing a different ship is also something to consider. The Wish may be the hot new thing, but the Dream visits the same ports and is often 10% cheaper (or more) for a nearly identical itinerary.

You may also want to look at other aspects of your trip planning as areas where you can economize. Will driving, rather than flying, allow you to reduce your total budget? Will choosing a different embarkation port change your budget? Can you skip extras like pricey shore excursions?

Thanks for this, Erin! We just devoured the 2022 Unofficial Guide as well. We’re a family of 6 embarking on our first cruise since our family grew to that size (we were a family of 4 on our last cruise). We had to juggle this same situation, booking connecting rooms, with my wife and 2 kids (tweens) in one room and myself and the other 2 kids (littles) in another. As you mentioned, sleeping arrangements will differ once we board. We’re also trying it a little differently on another cruise with a guaranteed rate and will see where and how they assign us.

When we called DCL, they did mention that the Wish will have rooms that sleep a family of our size, is that right?

Wish Tower Suite

In mid-May 2021 DCL introduced the "Wish Tower Suite" - the fleet's/industry's first-of-its-kind loft suite positioned in the forward funnel/smokestack.

The unique accommodation is sized 1965 ft2 (183 m2) and with interior design inspired by Walt Disney's 3D animation film "Moana" (2016).

The Wish Tower Suite accommodates up to 8 passengers and features 2x master bedrooms, 4x full bathrooms, 1x half-bath (powder room), 5x smart HDTVs, USB-charging stations, 8-seat dining table, under-counter refrigerator, pantry (dishwasher, refrigerator, coffee machine), library room (converting to a bedroom), kids' room (with built-in bunkbeds). The living room (on the lower level) is flanked by an open dining area, a pantry, and a bar, all offering unique views across the ship's upper decks through a 2-story window wall.

The master bedrooms are both on the Penthouse's upper level and have walk-in closets, King-size double beds with premium mattresses, floor-ceiling windows (overlooking the living area below). The main bathrooms each have rain-head showers, double-sink vanities, spa bathtubs.

• The Penthouse's piece de resistance is a hand-crafted porcelain sculpture coming alive. When passengers enter the room, they find the statue pulsing in hues of green amid soft chimes recalling the movie's soundtrack, revealing as the heart of Te Fiti. The Suite's magical experience also includes special lighting and sound effects to provide a one-of-a-kind greeting.

Wish Tower Suite is designed with Disney-style iconography, custom-made artworks and ornaments, and materials themed on Moana's Oceania world. The predominant color patterns are soft white and calm blue. The film-inspired interior decorations also include a custom-made canvas piece with Moana sailing on the sea, dimensional props (Moana's village), a sculpture composed of shiny objects (interpretation of the collector crab Tamatoa's dazzling collection). The kids' room features a sparkling constellation pattern lighting up the ceiling.

The loft suite's guests can expect royal service from a dedicated concierge team, an array of curated experiences, a selection of daily treats, private elevator access. Disney Wish cabins review

MS Disney Wish ship has 1238 staterooms, most of which are the midship-located Balconies. All cabins and suites are well planned and equipped with the cruise industry's latest amenities.

Like on all DCL ships, passenger staterooms on Disney Wish by sizes are ranked among the industry's largest standard cabins, designed to easily accommodate four people. Cabins are with ample storage space, lounge/living area and split bathrooms (1 room with shower-bathtub-sink-WC, and separate toilet-sink). Beds on are raised to allow underbed storage for 2 medium-sized suitcases. Each cabin has as standard amenities 2 mirrored vanities with chairs, 22-inch smart HDTV (satellite reception, infotainment system), iPod docking station, 2 rechargeable "Wave Phones" (for shipwide use).

Most Disney Wish cabins (~90%) are outside (Suites, Balconies, Oceanviews). Cabin categories include three "Guaranteed" categories: VGT-Balcony, OGT-Oceanview, IGT-Inside. Most 1-Bedroom Suites are with connecting doors, Queen bed (convertible to twins), sitting/lounge area with double sofabed, 1 pull-down bed (in the living room), walk-in closet, 2 bathrooms (one with a whirlpool hot-tub).

All balcony staterooms feature a private step-out veranda accessed via sliding glass doors (kid-proof locks), plexiglass railings, outdoor deck furniture (2 chairs, 1 small table). Categories 6A-6B have wall balconies, while categories 5A-5B-5C are plexiglass. Family Verandahs are with concierge service and have a Queen-size bed (or 2 twin beds), a hidden bunk bed, a larger living area (convertible sofabed), split bathroom. Category 4E cabins are with expanded balconies (twice bigger than standard balconies) but are open to views from above.

Most Oceanview staterooms have a Large Round Window (Porthole/non-opening). Of those, categories 9C-9D are with obstructed views (due to lifeboats). Family Oceanview (category 3B) is the largest.

DCL's innovative Inside Cabin features (industry's first) "Magical Portholes" - large, round-shaped LCD screens (positioned above the beds) projecting real-time outside views which are provided by the ship's cameras. Veranda Cabin's balcony is fitted with 2 deckchairs and a low table.

In mid-May 2021 DCL introduced the "Wish Tower Suite" - the fleet's (and the industry's) first-of-its-kind loft suite integrated into the forward funnel/smokestack. The unique accommodation is sized 1965 ft2 (183 m2) and with interior design inspired by Walt Disney's 3D animation film "Moana" (2016).

• The Wish Tower Suite accommodates up to 8 passengers and features 2x master bedrooms, 4x full bathrooms, half-bath (powder room), library (converting to a bedroom), kids' room (with built-in bunkbeds). The living room (on the lower level) is flanked by an open dining area, a pantry, and a bar, all offering unique views across the ship's upper decks through a 2-story window wall.
• The master bedrooms are both on the Penthouse's upper level and have walk-in closets, King-size double beds, floor-ceiling windows (overlooking the living area below). The main bathrooms each have rain-head showers, double-sink vanities, spa bathtubs.
• Wish Tower Suite is designed with Disney-style iconography, custom-made artworks and ornaments, and materials themed on Moana's Oceania world. The predominant color patterns are soft white and calm blue. The film-inspired interior decorations also include a custom-made canvas piece with Moana sailing on the sea, dimensional props (Moana's village), and a sculpture composed of shiny objects (interpretation of the collector crab Tamatoa's dazzling collection). The kids' room features a sparkling constellation pattern lighting up the ceiling.

The "Category 1A" loft suite's guests can expect royal service from a dedicated concierge team, an array of curated experiences, a selection of daily treats, private elevator access. Disney Cruise Line vs. Carnival: Which family-friendly cruise line should you choose?

If you're looking for a family-friendly cruise that everyone in your group will enjoy, you might be comparing Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line . Both popular cruise companies offer a variety of onboard experiences, top-notch service and lively entertainment that will keep everyone in your family having fun every day.

The two lines offer tricked-out play areas for kids and adults-only sun decks and fun bars for mom and dad. Couples looking for rest and relaxation and seniors wishing to play bingo or sip martinis can find their happy place on either Carnival or Disney.

Both lines have sun-drenched itineraries that take passengers to the Bahamas and Caribbean , with seasonal sailings to the Mediterranean and Alaska .

Still, there are lots of differences between the lines, starting with price. Here, we compare Disney Cruise Line and Carnival to see what they have in common and what they don't, so you can figure out the best cruise for you.

Size of ships

Disney Cruise Line has three classes of ships while Carnival Cruise Line has eight.

The smaller ships on both cruise lines (Disney Cruise Line's Magic class and Carnival Cruise Line's Fantasy and Spirit classes) carry between 2,000 and 3,000 guests.

Carnival's midsize ships include the Conquest, Splendor, Vista and Dream classes that can carry upward of 4,900 guests at full capacity. The midsize ships carry more passengers than Disney Cruise Line's largest ships (the Triton and Dream class), which have a maximum cruise capacity of 4,000 passengers.

Another difference in these two ship sizes is tonnage (essentially, how big the ships are). Carnival's midsize ships range from 110,000 to 130,000 gross registered tonnage. Disney's Dream-class ships are equal to Carnival's larger midsize ships at 130,000 gross tons, while the Triton class is larger at 144,000 gross tons.

Even though Disney's Triton-class ships are bigger than Carnival's Dream-class ships, Disney's ships carry fewer people, even at full capacity. That makes for a higher space-to-guest ratio and a less crowded feeling on board.

Carnival's largest ships can accommodate over 6,400 people at full capacity.

On Carnival's larger Excel-class ships, such as Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration , guests will find an abundance of amenities that aren't available on the smaller and older ships like Carnival Elation. The Excel-class ships have a roller coaster , ropes course and a flex-space theater in the middle of the ship with panoramic views of the ocean. While the party vibe is high on Carnival Elation, Carnival's smallest and oldest ship, the over-the-top amenities just aren't available.

What guests sailing on Carnival will find on every ship in the fleet is restaurants from celebrity chefs like Guy Fieri, fun waterslides, vibrant kids clubs and an adults-only pool area known as Serenity.

Disney Wish , the first ship in Disney Cruise Line's Triton class of ships, feels different from the other four ships in the Disney fleet. While the ship does have a lot of the same amenities, including Disney-themed bars, exciting kids clubs, a slew of restaurants and movie theaters showing first-run movies, Disney Wish has a more upscale vibe than the ships in the Dream or Magic classes.

On the flip side, Disney Wish doesn't have the adults-only district that the other four ships have. On those ships, lounges and bars are clustered together to create a true retreat with nighttime entertainment for adults.

The three ships in Disney's larger Dream- and Triton-class ships feature raft rides, including the AquaMouse on Disney Wish and the AquaDuck on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. The smaller Disney Magic has a drop slide, called the AquaDunk, that plunges guests down multiple decks. Its sister ship Disney Wonder does not have a major water ride, though it does have a twisting waterslide as part of its kids splash area.

Every ship in the Carnival fleet is a floating resort with outdoor pools, casinos, spas, bars and live entertainment taking place day and night. Disney ships also have that resort feel but without the casino and with more dedicated kids spaces.

One of the biggest differences between Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line is the price of a sailing. Carnival is known for its affordable prices and many drive-to departure ports around the U.S. (eliminating the need for the added expense of airfare). Disney's prices are more akin to a luxury vacation.

For example, a weeklong sailing to the Eastern Caribbean in July 2024 starts at $909 for two people in an inside cabin or $1,249 for two people in a balcony cabin on Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras, one of its newest and biggest ships. The same itinerary on Disney Fantasy starts at $5,171 for an inside cabin or $6,445 for a verandah cabin for two people.

In 2024, the starting rate for a three-night Bahamas cruise is $189 per person on Carnival or $618 per person on Disney, both based on double occupancy.

If the price is the determining factor of your vacation, then Carnival is easily the best value for the price. Its ropes course, adults-only sun deck and many of its dining options (including venues linked with celebrity chef Guy Fieri) are included in the fare. Just be sure to watch for added fees that can increase the cost of your cruise, such as drinks packages, specialty dining, shore excursions and roller coaster rides.

For those who have a larger budget, Disney Cruise Line may be a better fit with more-spacious ships, standard cabins created for families and a more upscale feel. Cruise fares include access to first-run Disney, Marvel, Pixar and "Star Wars" movies at the onboard theater, meals in multiple venues (often with dinnertime entertainment), nonalcoholic drinks (including soda) and Disney's high-quality entertainment, from original musicals to deck parties with character performances and fireworks.

Added costs on Disney include tours, alcoholic beverages (Disney doesn't have onboard drinks packages to potentially save you money) and specialty dining in the adults-only restaurants.

Cabins and suites

Both cruise lines offer a wide range of cabin styles in various price ranges for all types of families, including windowless inside, ocean view, verandah (with a private balcony) and suite. Carnival and Disney offer connecting rooms and cabins that can sleep four or more. However, they vary in design and layout, with different specialty cabins and perks for the top categories of accommodations.

Disney Cruise Line is better if you want a cabin with virtually everything your family needs on a cruise. Most of Disney's standard cabins have the cruise line's signature split bathroom (toilet and sink in one room, sink and shower in another), which is helpful for larger families looking to get ready for the day with ease. The cabins also have a large curtain dividing mom and dad's bed from the upper bunk and sleeper sofa the kids are sleeping on. Parents can get a bit more privacy and can keep the lights on after kid bedtime without bothering sleeping children.

Another fun touch: The smaller inside rooms on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy feature a "magical porthole," a window-shaped LED screen with real-time views of the outside world, along with appearances by Disney characters.

Carnival's standard cabins are more casual, with plenty of storage and colorful decor. The line does offer some of the largest standard cabins in the cruise industry.

Carnival offers more specialty cabins and suites than Disney, if you're interested in a unique or themed room. Some of the specialty cabins include Havana suites that have access to a private pool and lounge deck, the Cloud 9 Spa rooms that have exclusive perks like unlimited use of the spa's thermal suite, and Family Harbor cabins and suites that come with access to a family-friendly lounge packed with snacks, board games and TVs.

Both cruise lines have larger suites with extra amenities, but Disney gets the nod in this category.

Disney Cruise Line's larger concierge suites range in style from family ocean-view cabins to lavish two-story suites, one of which is located inside the forward funnel on Disney Wish. Perks of booking a concierge suite include access to the concierge lounge, where snacks and drinks are available all day. Attentive hosts can book specialty dining reservations, excursions and more for your family. Concierge guests also get priority access to embark and disembark the ship and the first pick of seats inside the Walt Disney Theatre for shows.

Newer Carnival ships have more suites than older ships in the fleet, where the nicest rooms are bigger but not always fancy. On Carnival's Excel-class ships, the Havana cabins and suites have access to a private pool deck, and Cloud 9 Spa cabins come with unlimited access to the ship's thermal suite in the spa. Travelers who pick a standard suite can enjoy access to Loft 19, a private pool deck with loungers and cabanas, concierge service and an infinity whirlpool.

Food and drink

Dining on both Carnival and Disney is abundant, but Carnival leads the pack with its plentiful and tasty free options, plus a variety of extra-fee specialty restaurants. Disney is known for its unique rotational dining plan and entertaining dinner shows.

Carnival cruisers have their favorite food destinations on board each ship. For some, the celebrity chef-led restaurants pique their interest. They might go for complimentary burgers or barbecue at Guy's Burger Joint or Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse, respectively, both of which are collaborations with celebrity chef Guy Fieri, or extra-fee New Orleans fare from Emeril Lagasse. Other cruisers enjoy the extra-cost classic steakhouses or Italian favorites at Cucina del Capitano.

Complimentary restaurants are mostly found on the pool decks and include a make-your-own taco and burrito bar, Italian-style pizza and a deli dishing out sky-high sandwiches. The main dining room gets high marks, especially for its outstanding Indian cuisine and iconic melting chocolate cake .

On Disney cruise ships, passengers aren't assigned to one main dining room, as they are on Carnival, but rotate through three themed dining rooms with their waiters in tow. Each included restaurant has its own set of menus and theme.

Among the three, you're likely to find one more elegant dining space, a dining room with character interactions (like the "Frozen" or "Tangled"-themed dining rooms on Disney Wish and Disney Magic, respectively) and a restaurant with interactive elements – such as creating animations or taking down a Marvel villain – to keep everyone occupied during mealtime.

Guests can also indulge in complimentary fast-food fare (burgers, chicken strips, etc.) at the buffet and casual pool deck venues.

Disney ships offer minimal extra-fee restaurants, with Disney Magic and Disney Wonder offering just one and Disney Wish, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy featuring two. All are adults-only. The highlight of all five ships is Palo (Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish), which features elevated Italian cuisine with sweeping ocean views. On Disney's larger ships, Remy and Enchante are French fine dining restaurants ideal for date night or celebrating one of life's many milestones.

Kids activities

No matter what age your kids are, they will find plenty of fun inside the kids clubs on board both lines' cruise ships. Both lines have impeccable programs that keep kids entertained throughout the day with age-appropriate activities and different spaces for kids of all ages. For younger kids, you just can't beat the size and innovation of Disney's Oceaneer Club.

On Carnival, Camp Ocean divides junior cruisers ages 2 to 11 into three age-based groups and offers activities like games, movies and crafts. Carnival also has a Suess at Sea program, and kids can participate in activities inspired by Dr. Suess books and meet favorite characters like the Cat in the Hat.

Kids ages 2 to 11 interested in space can also join the Space Cruisers program, where youngsters learn about space exploration and participate in activities developed in partnership with NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

Over at Circle "C," teens ages 12 to 14 have a hangout spot that's all their own with counselor-led activities like dance parties, games and outdoor movies. Older teens ages 15 to 17 head to Club O2 to enjoy karaoke sessions, movies and video games with their peers.

Carnival does not have a nursery for kids under age 2, but at night, parents can drop their youngsters off at Night Owls, where kids ages 6 months to 11 years can enjoy games, activities and parties or get some rest until 1 a.m.

Disney Cruise Line has some of the most impressive kids clubs at sea. Kids ages 3 to 12 can enjoy Disney's Oceaneer Club on all five ships, though the themed spaces are different from ship to ship. Inside this space, kids can enjoy learning how to fly the Millennium Falcon in a "Star Wars"-themed area or building roller coasters at the Walt Disney Imagineering Lab. Kids can also see and play with their favorite Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Thor.

Tweens and teens also have their own spaces on the Disney fleet with Edge and Vibe, respectively. As on Carnival, teens can enjoy counselor-led activities like trivia contests, shipwide scavenger hunts and even a movie-making course.

Unlike Carnival, Disney does have a nursery for kids ages 6 months to 3 years. Parents can reserve times to drop their kids off at the nursery online or once on board the ship, and the minimum reservation time is one hour. There is a small fee to use the nursery, but it can be helpful for parents who want to enjoy specialty dining or the spa. The nursery is also open while in port, so parents can drop their kids off if they have a planned excursion or want to explore on their own.

Onboard attractions

Carnival is known for its over-the-top upper decks where families can have thrilling adventures throughout the sailing. Its WaterWorks water parks feature waterslides and splash pads for every thrill level on most ships. Most also have sports courts and minigolf.

Starting with the Dream class of ships, the outdoor decks feature an added ropes course; on the Vista-class ships, the upper decks include a suspended bicycle that goes around the perimeter of a deck. Carnival's newest ships – Mardi Gras, Celebration and the upcoming Jubilee – all feature a roller coaster, water park and ropes course.
