  • Canyoning Holidays

canyoning-in-the-alps-(1-of-1).jpg

What better way to spend a hot summer's day, than by jumping into deep natural pools of cool clear alpine water, abseiling under the veil of a powerful waterfall or sliding down a natural rock tobogan!!!

What is Canyoning?

A canyon is a natural gorge, that has been gauged out of the mountain side by flowing water. They can be deep with steep cliff walls on each side and generally consist of a series of waterfalls that flow into large pools. Canyoning is an exhilarating journey negotiating the best and most fun route down the canyon!

Some waterfalls carve natural tobogans into the rock that you can just slide down, some steeper waterfalls require abseiling down and some have beautiful deep pools at the bottom that you can just jump into and splash about in!

How to go Canyoning?

It is always advisable to go canyoning with a guide as canyons are very susceptible to local conditions which a local guide will know and take into consideration. You also need specialist equipment, which they will provide.

We have a range of multi activity holidays with canyoning included in the itinerary or you can choose one of our popular fully customisable summer multi activity holidays which includes activity points that you can exchange for a range of activities including canyoning. This customisable summer activity holiday is also available as a weekend micro adventure .

For stag and hen groups, canyoning is a highly popular and hilariously fun activity that is perfect for mixed groups. Please get in touch if you are looking for this sort of adventure weekend and we can tailor make you a quote.

Who Will Love Canyoning?

To enjoy canyoning you need to be able to swim and be happy putting your head under water. A head for heights is also advisable as some canyons contain steep natural slides and jumps or will include a gushing waterfall that you will need to abseil over.

A lot of canyons are quite extreme and for a beginner, even with an adventurous spirit, it is important to choose a canyon that is fun and not too austere for a first experience. We have sifted through the canyons available for our summer activity holidays and canyoning multi activity trips and chosen the ones we think are the most fun and safe!

We even have fabulous kiddie canyons for families and younger children from around the age of six or seven. Have a read of our blog about canyoning with kids if you are keen on taking your children canyoning on your next family activity holiday. For families with teenagers, canyoning is also voted as one of our top three activities to do with teenagers .

How fit do you have to be to go canyoning?

Canyons vary enormously with different fitness requirements. The bare minimum for a fun recreational canyon would be to be able to sustain a 30 minute to an hour mountain walk with some uphill and to be able to swim in cold water (you will have a wetsuit on). Some more extreme canyons require high levels of fitness and technical skills but you can ask when you book your holiday what level of fitness is required for the types of canyons used during the holiday. We can help you choose the right option for you.

Can children go canyoning?

Yes there are canyons suitable for all levels. We have a kiddie canyon available as an activity to choose as part of our customisable summer multi-activity holiday that is great for children aged 7 - 10. Read our blog for more information on canyoning for kids .

What is the best types of holiday for trying out canyoning?

You can try canyoning as part of our customisable summer multi activity holidays in the Alps or weekend breaks or we can tailor make you a canyoning weekend with lots of different canyons to try out. Please get in touch if you would like a tailor made canyoning trip.

If you are looking for a thrill-seeking experience in Costa Rica, look no further! Rappelling (also known as canyoning in Costa Rica) is a fun-filled adventure down waterfalls and cliff faces.

What is Canyoning?

A man rappelling down a cliff side in Costa Rica

Canyoning is the name used in Costa Rica for rappelling down the side of cliff faces or waterfalls. This is a thrilling activity that can be enjoyed all around the country.

In Costa Rica, it is common to go rappelling as part of a day combo tour. This means that you will get the chance to try rappelling in combination with other activities such as zip lining, white water rafting, a hanging bridge walk, etc.

Who This Activity Is For/ Not For?

Man rapelling down series of waterfalls

This activity is for anyone who loves adventure, is over the age limit (this is decided by each company, but most places allow children somewhere in the range of over 6 to 10 years old), and anyone in moderate physical health.

This activity is NOT for anyone with heart problems or other serious medical conditions, pregnant travelers, or people with back problems.

What to Wear

For canyoning in Costa Rica, we suggest wearing your bathing suit under shorts and a t-shirt which can get wet. We like UV-protected items that are fast drying. Also, keep in mind that you will be wearing a harness so, anything which might bunch up a lot will not be the most comfortable.

You will need to wear closed-toed shoes with a decent grip. We like Keen’s for this activity because they can get wet, are breathable, and have a solid sole with good grip action.

If you plan on wearing glasses or sunglasses we suggest wearing a strap to keep them from falling.

You will also be wearing a helmet, so don’t do your hair up nicely.

What to Bring

Most places will offer lockers or some place to store your belongings for your canyoning in Costa Rica adventure. You might want to bring a change of clothes for after, a bottle of water, sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, and a towel.

All of the companies we included have great safety records and are known to comply with safety standards of Costa Rica . Always listen to the safety instructions of the guides and follow them as closely as possible. If they tell you something, there is a reason for it.

Also, if you feel unsafe at any point, trust your instincts.  And don’t forget travel insurance !

We decided on a canyoning trip for the birthday of our twins and it was a great decision! The team was ready and everything was prepared at our arrival. After a good introduction and a short bus ride we started to climb towards the entry point of the canyon. Along the 3+ hours you master some major jumps and cliffs! A good mix between adventure, adrenalin and family fun!

Proper Equipment

Weather conditions and safety.

When it comes to canyoning, weather conditions play a crucial role in determining the level of thrill and adventure. Canyon Difficulty Level

Another important factor is the difficulty level of the canyon. Assess your own skill level and choose a canyon that matches your abilities. Some canyons may require technical skills such as rappelling or swimming through strong currents, while others may be more suitable for beginners or families. Canyoning begins with a nice walk through the Amazon basin. The incredible paths and routes will immerse you in the forest. You’ll pass through some small rivers and very tall trees. The whole place is mesmerizing by itself.

It’s an incredible experience. You can drink clean fresh water directly from the fountain. But, it needs to be said that canyoning has its physical challenges.

Tips: canyoning for beginners

Before you start your adventure vacation and your canyoning trip, here’s a small list of useful tips.

1. Take a guided canyoning trip

If you have no prior experience of canyoning of course it’s recommended that you take a guided trip. On the other hand, if you want to experience a foreign canyoneering adventure, then please ask for a tour guide . An advantage of going on a canyoning tour is that they’re going to give you all the equipment. Also, they’ll explain everything about the environment and surroundings.

2. Rock Hop for canyoning

A good option to get your muscles moving and get used to some movement skills is to rock hop along open creeks. All your small muscles will start working to get used to canyoning . Due to this effort, your balance will increase. At the same time, you’ll have more experience with which types of rocks are slippery and how to get over them. Even more, you’re going to spend more time outside and it’s always a good plan.

3. It’s all about the feet in canyoning

After your first canyoning experience, maybe you’ll be craving for more. A game changer canyoneering gears are the shoes and footwear. It’s all about the grip, not the clumsy hiking boots. You need soft rubber to move swiftly over the slipper rocks.

4. Learn your knots & anchors

Before you start, you need to practice. Hit the books and start there, if you’re more into websites then the Oz Ultimate is a must. Another option and advice are to always ask someone with more experience if your knots are correct. Please don’t forget to always check them twice and buddy check before committing to them.

This amazing adventure sport will be about a problem-solving mindset. You’ll have some challenges and you need to react quickly so, the more knowledge that you have the better equipped you’ll be. The Dye Clan -a very outdoorsy family- has a special section about anchors used in canyoneering that is going to be very useful.

5. You need to get fit

Like any other adventure sport, canyoning requires a level of   physical movement and strength. You’re going to hike, swim, jump, and balance to complete your route. So be prepared to have a good baseline of fitness because of all the activities. The emphasis of canyoning is to have fun and enjoy the place where you are.

6. Learn the tripod for canyoning

Remember to keep the three points of contact at all times. This is not only applied for rock climbing but also for canyoning . One hand and both feet . Using the hand that is not holding the rope, place it where it’s needed to give you balance. At first, it is going to be weird and maybe sketchy because you’re used to using both your hands to hold the rope. But after some experience, you’re going to realize that having one hand on the rocks is going to improve your balance and confidence in going over the edge.

 7. Tie long hair back

Even if it sounds obvious, avoid getting your hair caught in the descender. Take any long hair, especially those strands on the front that come lose all the time, and tie it all at the back of your head. The same applies to any loose clothing flapping about. The whole point of having adventure vacations is to enjoy!

8. Keep an eye on each other

Canyoning is a team activity. You all need to look after the group to keep each other safe. The most common way is to keep a buddy system. Basically, you stick with the same person the whole way through helping one another if that were the case.

Canyoning in Ecuador

With incredibly diverse geography and climate, Ecuador is one of the best destinations for adventure vacations . One day you can climb up snowy volcanoes and the next day you can rest on an idyllic beach. For sure, the most popular destination for adventure sports and especially canyoning is Baños de Agua Santa . Thanks to its proximity to the Amazon region, the closeness to cascades and rivers is the perfect place to do it!

But, there is also the National Reserve Colonso Chalupas . There, you can explore more of the Amazon Basin, its wildlife, and its flora. There are several cascades to explore on this site. Perfect to do  canyoning and get to know more about the local community. You’ll fall in love with this experience.

Side note: this sport is recommended for kids 6 years old and older.

Canyoning in the blue mountains: the best way to experience the wilderness.

  • Post published: 13 July 2015
  • Post category: Australia / New South Wales / Oceania/South Pacific

I’ve been many times to the Blue Mountains when I was living in Sydney, for a day trip or a weekend away . The famous Three Sisters are often listed as an Australian must-do as they are the icon of the Blue Mountains. However, there are many better spots in the area – and less crowded. I came down from Brisbane twice to do canyoning in the Blue Mountains – and one trip was even  my first canyoning experience ever . And I loved it.

I had done abseiling in the Blue Mountains before – which despite my fear of heights was a fantastic experience that I highly recommend if you don’t feel like getting wet with canyoning.

Blue Mountains Canyoning Yileen

Out of all my trips to the Blue Mountains, these three trips (1x abseiling + 2 x canyoning) were  the best way to experience the Blue Mountains … if you are adventurous!

If you don’t like water,  check out this complete guide  with all the necessary info to explore the Blue Mountain the way you’ll like it!

Abseiling in the Blue Mountains

Blue Mountains Abseiling 02w

As mentioned, I am scared of heights. I worked hard on it , and I am better now, but back then it was still a huge handicap. I actually did not choose to go abseiling: I had a voucher to use with a friend, and it ended up being the only activity we could pick from the list fitting our timetables at this season.

We made a day trip from Sydney by train  to Katoomba station. The abseiling we booked was a 1/2 day activity for $99 that also gave us time to do a walk from the Three Sisters (Echo Point) in the afternoon.

We joined a tour and got three cliffs to abseil:

  • A 5m cliff: for the beginners to understand the technique
  • A 15m cliff: great views and feelings on this one…
  • A 30m cliff: obviously the most impressive one…

The immensity of the scenic untouched surrounding landscape when abseiling the last cliff was very impressive. I was glad we could do each one twice as I have to admit I was too anxious to enjoy the first one each time…!

It was a great way to see the beauty of the Blue Mountains far from the crowd with a hint of adventure and adrenaline.

And if you are ready for a bigger adventure, canyoning is the option to go for!

Blue Mountains Abseiling

Canyoning in the Blue Mountains

There are 50 or 60 canyons to explore in the Blue Mountains, offering different levels of experience and different lengths. Tours go to about 15 of them.

A colleague who explored a few canyons in the Blue Mountains highly recommended three of them: Butterbox, Claustral and Bowen North.

So far, we have only tried two – always with a guided tour: Butterbox and Yileen. Both will take a full day. If you’re short on time you can check out Empress Canyon instead.

Canyoning in the Blue Mountains (Butterbox Canyon)

1. Butterbox Canyon (advanced level)

We picked butterbox canyon as from the photos it seemed to be spectacular with a lot of variety. we didn’t regret it..

I loved how we were just our group in the wilderness, by ourselves for hours in the immensity of the canyon. Our guides knew very well the area and having two staff to prepare the equipment, give technical advice and take care of the security was a luxury: we only had to fully enjoy the views and have fun!

It was a real adventure, among the most physically demanding activities I have done during a trip.

fun trip canyoning

I was the only girl, and the group had a decent pace that required a lot of effort to follow. There were many opportunities to jump in the 14° water, as well as impressive cliffs to abseil. We ended with some rock climbing: with wet shoes and after many efforts, it was harder than I expected!

I was glad we only made a day trip and had no big plans in Sydney on the following day: it took me three days to recover from the muscle pain!

2. Yileen Canyon (intermediate level)

Our second canyoning adventure in the Blue Mountains was with a friend who had never done abseiling before. I also came back from a foot injury a few months earlier and didn’t want to push to the advanced level this time.

Yileen Canyon is in the Grose Valley near Blackheath – a place where we hiked before to my favourite lookout in the Blue Mountains .

fun trip canyoning

With three abseils building up progressively (from five metres to 50 metres!) and no jump, Yileen looked perfect on paper. And it met our expectations: we had an excellent day, and we are already looking forward to our next canyoning trip.

When is the best time to go canyoning in the Blue Mountains?

I’ve only done canyoning a few times in my life (in Vanuatu , the Blue Mountains and Cairns ), so I won’t pretend to be an expert. But after discussing with the guides during our couple of canyoning trips in the Blue Mountains, I feel like summer and early autumn are the best seasons to go canyoning.

Summer brings the heat which allows you not to get too cold when you’re wet. However, the climb back may be strenuous.

In early Autumn, the water should have warmed up a little bit from the hot summer days. And if you’re lucky, you’ll have a lovely sunny day but the heat shouldn’t be too bad as you climb back.

Have you ever done canyoning or visited the Blue Mountains? Leave a comment below!

Where to stay in the blue mountains.

The Blue Mountains can be visited on a day trip from Sydney – and you don’t even need a car as the train will take you there. It was my prefered option to save on accommodation costs when I was travelling on a budget and living in Sydney.

But if you have a car, it is worth spending the entire weekend in the Blue Mountains, if you can.

Those travelling on a budget will love the free campsites available in the Blue Mountains. We stayed at Blackheath Glen Reserve. But be equipped for the weather: it can get very hot during summer, and very cold during winter. And it’s not unusual to have a storm at the end of the day . The Blue Mountains are about 1,000 metres above sea level, so it’s not the same weather forecast as Sydney.

Not a fan of camping? Katoomba is the most famous town in the Blue Mountains and the easiest to reach. It offers many accommodation options. But I’d personally go for something out of town, like a charming cottage. I also find the region near Blackheath more attractive and less crowded.

If you don’t mind the price, The Enchanted Cave and the ECO Certified Spicers Sangoma Retreat * are on my dream list. But they’re out of most people’s budget (including mine).

Where are these canyons in the Blue Mountains?

The Blue Mountains are 50km to the northwest of Sydney, in New South Wales ( Australia ). It is a World Heritage Listed national park about the size of Belgium. It takes 1h40 by car to reach Katoomba from Sydney, and around 2h30 by train.

When joining a tour for abseiling or canyoning, you will meet the guide in Katoomba, the most touristy place in the Blue Mountains.

It’s one of the stops on my Australia’s East Coast road trip guide that you can download for free here .

Wow, I didn’t know you could do either, abeiling and canoeing. Such a great idea! I unfortunately just spent a day there and thought that was so not enough. Now I’ve got some ideas for the next time I’m there. 🙂

Canyoning, not canoeing 😉 I don’t know if you can do canoeing in the Blue Mountains, but that won’t be as impressive than canyoning. Glad I’m giving you additional reasons to come back! 🙂

Rock Climbing, Abseiling & Canyoning

What is canyoning | a beginners guide to gorge walking, a complete beginner's guide to gorge walking.

Canyoning is a sport that mixes adrenaline and natural beauty in equal measure. Trekking through gorges, waterfalls and giant rock pools, canyoning lets you get waist deep in nature and experience it in a brand new way. So if you’re looking for your next outdoor adrenaline fix what exactly is Canyoning and how do you get into it?

What Is Canyoning?

fun trip canyoning

Canyoning (also known as gorge walking) is probably best described as white water rafting without the boat. Canyoners navigate their way down water filled gorges by swimming through rock pools, sliding down chutes and clambering over the rocks and other unique features of the canyon landscape. This pastime combines elements from different outdoor disciplines including scrambling, abseiling , cliff jumping and swimming and requires local knowledge and rope rigging skills to be done safely.

Gorge walking is usually done in remote and mountainous areas where water has cut unusual patterns and shapes through the rock. While there are some fairly technical canyoning trips around, most focus on fun and beautiful locations with plenty of big jumps and natural water slides that are accessible to all.

What Equipment Do You Need To Go Canyoning ?

fun trip canyoning

There’s loads of different gear that can come in handy on canyoning adventure , depending on where you’re canyon is and how tough the descent will be. Specifics aside there are a couple of essential bits of canyoning equipment that will be useful on nearly any canyoning adventure:

Helmet: Canyoning is a dangerous sport and the risk of injury is ever-present – a helmet is the first essential first piece of gear you’ll need for gorge walking . Make sure you go for a model that’s built to withstand getting wet and is a bright colour to make you easy to spot in the water.

Rope: Even if you’re not planning a really technical descent a good length of climbing rope will always come in handy while gorge walking. Rope can be used to help the less confident members of a group down steep gorge sections and can be used for rescues if needed. Plus at the end of a trip a good old fashioned rope swing is always a good laugh!

Wetsuit And Buoyancy Aid : When you canyoning you’re going to get soaked, so a wetsuit will protect you against chill from getting in and out of water and keep you warm enough to keep on gorge walking. Buoyancy aids are also a good idea, reducing the effort of any long swims and keeping your head out of the water if you have an accident.

What Do I Need To Know Before I Go Canyoning ?

fun trip canyoning

Canyoning can be a pretty dangerous sport so there’s a few things you should check out before you go to give yourself the best chance of a safe and fun time. With organised tour groups this stuff will be taken care of for you but it never hurts to have an idea of what to expect.

Know Where You’re Going: Most canyoning trips around the world are organised by guides who know the area well. This is one of the best ways to experience new canyoning spots for the first time, even if you have the skill and experience to go gorge walking on your own.

If you are planning an independent canyoning trip then make sure you’ve read up all you can about the canyon and local area before you arrive so that you’re as familiar as possible with all the quirks and danger spots of the spot you’re going to tackle. It’s also a good idea to check the weather report for the whole week surrounding your trip date to make sure there isn’t any heavy rain coming in which could cause dangerous rapids or flash floods.

Get The Right Skills: There are some basic canyoning skills that everyone you’re heading out with should know. All gorge walkers should have a good basic level of fitness and be able to swim. If you’re going on an independent trip you will also need to have at least one person who knows how to rig ropes and it helps for group members to have some  abseiling experience too.

fun trip canyoning

Stay In Touch: Canyoning can be a dangerous and remote pastime, so it’s not something to get stuck into without a bit of planning. Mobile phone signal can be a real issue at the bottom of a canyon but make sure you’ve got some way to call the outside world because on the off chance it works it could really help to get you out of a sticky situation. Also make sure that at least one person not on the trip knows where you are going and when you will be back so that if you get into trouble and can’t tell anyone, rescue can still be on its way.

Check Your Protection: If you’re heading to a well used spot, it’s important to check the condition of the abseiling or climbing protection you’ll be using. Popular canyoning spots there will often be permanent bolts in place for you to abseil from but even though many people will have used these, don’t assume they’re safe. Check each one before committing your weight or rope to it.

Pace Yourself: Gorge walking is a demanding sport which borrows from several other outdoor sports , so a good basic level of fitness is required. Once you have entered a canyon you’ll often only be able to get out by completing your trip down the watercourse, so make sure that you’ll have the energy and strength to keep going for the full trek. It’s a good idea to pack some extra energy boosting snacks for the trip and take breaks when you need them so that you’re giving 100% to each step of your descent because losing concentration at any point can lead to serious accidents.

Where Can I Learn Canyoning ?

fun trip canyoning

The best place to get started with canyoning is as part of an organised group. You’ll have all the essential canyoning kit provided for you and an experienced guide to quite literally show you the ropes. You’ll pick up a lot of basic technique and safety tips from your first couple of trips and your guide should be able to point you in the direction of good local spots to try out when you’re ready.

If you want to try an independent trip then make sure you get some training first. The UK Canyon Guides website  is a good place to start as they offer both basic skills courses and training for anyone who wants to become a canyoning guide.

Where Are The Best Places To Go Canyoning?

fun trip canyoning

There are lots of great places to go canyoning in the UK . Popular spots include Dundonnell or the Inchree Falls in Scotland, or How Stean Gorge in Yorkshire. The Brecon Beacons or Snowdonia National Park are among the best places to go canyoning in Wales .

Looking abroad, there are plenty of killer gorge walking spots around the world . Utah is home to some of the most famous canyoning (or canyoneering as it’s known in the USA) spots and there are also the iconic Grand Canyon treks in Arizona.

If you fancy something more exotic then Costa Rica or even Nepal might be for you, but basically anywhere with a decent sized gorge system and some experienced local guides is a go.

Canyoning Adventures in Bali

Welcome to our guide to canyoning adventures in Bali, a…

Which Austrian Alpine region is right for you?

With epic scenery and fresh mountain air guaranteed, Austria’s Alps offer travellers an inviting mix of culture, relaxation and adventure. Find out which area would suit you this summer.

A person on a mountain lookout platform.

One of Europe’s top skiing destinations in winter, the Austrian Alps are sometimes overlooked as a place to visit in summer. But once the snow seekers go into hibernation and the ski schools shut up shop, the mountains, meadows and valleys here take on a different look — and other activities take centre stage. You’ll find hiking, climbing and biking routes across the Alps, as well as beautiful lakes to swim in. Travellers chasing an action-packed break can try cycling in Kitzbühel or paragliding in St Anton, while those in search of peace and quiet could venture to the nature park in Zillertal. For culture and food, visit the bustling city of Innsbruck or head to Paznaun-Ischgl. Here, discover the right Austrian Alpine region for you.

Colourful traditional Austrian buildings with a mountain backdrop.

Best for: a city break This mid-Alpine urban centre in the west of the country is the gateway to the Tyrolean mountains. For many, it offers the best of both worlds, with an attractive old town, interesting sights — such as the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) — and the Nordkette Cable Car that cruises up to the surrounding peaks. Summer brings a fun programme of events, including a series of open-air concerts held in the courtyard of the Kaiserliche Hofburg (Imperial Palace). Learn about local history and culture while paddling on the River Inn on a city rafting tour with Stubai Rafting or try Up Stream Surfing , a fun combination of river surfing and wakeboarding.

Best for: mountain biking A place that holds many accolades for its skiing facilities, glitzy Kitzbühel also flexes its muscles in summertime. Take biking, for example — the area has hosted a cycling marathon, Der Kitzbüheler Radmarathon , since 2021 and boasts one of the most challenging road ascents in Austria: the Kitzbüheler Horn. Mountain bikers will love the recently opened Sonnenrast trail or the single-track Hahnenkamm route, which runs all the way back to the town.

Close-up of a plated platter of cheese and cured meat.

Paznaun-Ischgl

Best for: Alpine cuisine Cool air and rocky peaks see cyclists flock to the 25-mile-long Paznaun Valley in summer for events such as the E-Bike World Championship , but there's another draw here, too. Alongside Ischgl’s high-end restaurants are a number of rustic mountain huts, which from July to October offer seasonal dishes developed by local chefs. Traditional cooking is combined with gourmet flair, with last year’s highlights including Alpine beef with wild herbs, and nettle ravioli with barley, cheese and chicory. Also, be sure to taste the region's signature cheese, Paznauner almkäse (mountain cheese), which gets its distinct taste from alpine herbs.

Schladming-Dachstein

Best for: views With more than 300 lakes and 100 waterfalls, the Schladming-Dachstein region is one of the most water-rich in Austria — take a short hike to Spiegelsee on the Reiteralm to see the mountains mirrored on the glass-clear water of the lake. The region's standout feature, however, is the majestic Dachstein Mountain . The mountain station at 2,700m above sea level is easily reachable by cable car and offers views as far as the Czech Republic and Slovenia. A suspension bridge, a viewing platform and the snappily titled ‘Stairway to Nothingness’ await visitors here, while a shiny new cable car station is scheduled to open in May 2024.

People doing yoga on a grassy hill with mountains in the background.

St Anton am Arlberg

Best for: outdoor activities Known as the birthplace of Alpine skiing, St Anton am Arlberg has a fascinating history that’s shared with visitors year-round at the local Museum of St Anton am Arlberg . In warmer months, the town provides the perfect base from which to try a whole host of outdoor activities. Adrenaline-seekers can try paragliding or canyoning, while those seeking relaxation can unwind at the Mountain Yoga Festival St Anton — and those wanting a bit of everything can make for the action-packed Mountain Sports Festival . Whatever you go for, St Anton am Arlberg is easy to reach by train thanks to regular high-speed connections from Vienna and Zurich.

St Johann in Tirol

Best for: local charm St Johann in Tirol sits at the foot of the impressive Wilder Kaiser Mountains, alongside the charming villages of Oberndorf, Kirchdorf and Erpfendorf. There are ample activities on offer in the region, including hiking, road cycling and mountain biking, golf and swimming. For a true taste of the area, check out the many local farm shops and cafes to pick up outstanding fresh produce or visit the traditional St Johann Weekly Market to sample regional specialities such as brodakrapfen (a pasty-like snack filled with potato and cheese).

People paddleboarding on a lake.

Zell am See-Kaprun

Best for: swimming and watersports On a calm day, the mountains around Lake Zell are reflected in the clear water below. Refreshing water temperatures and lakeside lidos make this Salzburgerland spot popular for swimming, as well as stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing. Not far away is the modern Tauern Spa , with 12 pools and a selection of wellness areas including 10 saunas and steam rooms — try the rock crystal sauna with different infusions such as mint and citrus or lemongrass and eucalyptus, and be sure to set aside ample time to take in the surrounding scenery.

Best for: nature The wide Zillertal valley is located to the east of Innsbruck. There are plenty of areas dedicated to outdoor sports here, including an extended ski season and year-round activities on the Hintertux Glacier , but also parts that remain almost untouched. The High Mountain Nature Park Zillertal Alps covers a 160sq-mile area and is home to thousands of animal species, including 500 kinds of butterfly, and more than 1,000 plant varieties. From May to October, themed hiking tours led by the experienced park guides — such as the ‘herb walk’ or wildlife watching — provide fascinating insights into the local flora and fauna.

What Is Canyoning?

  • Sarah Lawrence College
  • Conservation

Most people have heard of rock climbing , mountaineering, spelunking and hiking, all activities that help us explore the natural world. With so many different kinds of terrain to choose from, we've created pastimes for each type of challenge.

One sport that's gaining in popularity in the United States is canyoning or canyoneering, as it’s also called. At its most basic level, canyoning means heading down into a canyon to explore. While that sounds simple, the act of getting down into a canyon is more involved than you might think. Those who do it utilize several skills, including hiking, rappelling, bouldering, sliding, swimming, wading, scrambling, rafting and waterfall jumping .

Because so many different skills might be needed on a trip into a canyon, there's often a guide or a certain level of expertise involved, plus a wide range of gear.

Basic outdoor stores like REI and Eastern Mountain Sports might have a small amount of canyoneering gear. Just because the gear isn't labeled for the activity doesn't mean it won't work. Many of the same pieces of equipment you would use for rock climbing, mountaineering and spelunking are also used for canyoning.

Depending on the difficulty of the canyon, gear could include harnesses, helmets, wetsuits, dry suits, rope, carabiners, rappel devices, gloves, elbow and knee pads, webbing, biners, prusiks, descenders, survival kits and canyon dry kegs or water-resistant packs that keep your belongings dry when you're in the water. If you're new to the sport, contact your guide in advance to make sure you'll have all the items you'll need for a specific trip. All canyons are different, so the equipment will vary.

Popular canyoning destinations

Canyoning is relatively new in the United States, but there's no shortage of great destinations, especially if you head to Utah. Zion National Park is a favorite for many canyoneering adventures as well as Cedar Mesa. For a great list of places in Utah along with ratings, visit Canyoneering USA . Arizona and Hawaii also have some excellent canyoning options. Outside the U.S., Australia, South Africa, Scotland, Costa Rica, New Zealand and Mexico offer great canyoning sites and have plenty of experienced guides to help you navigate the terrain.

Is it dangerous?

As much fun as canyoning is, it’s important to remember that there are very real dangers. Here are some things to keep in mind.

  • The buddy system. Don't ever go canyoning alone. One slip or twist of the ankle could leave you stranded.
  • Know where you are. Bring a GPS or map and make sure to follow your guide so you don't get lost.
  • Flash floods. It might not be raining where you are, but if it’s raining a few miles away, the waters can swell and create fast currents leading to a potentially dangerous situation.
  • Hypothermia. If someone sits in cold water for too long, hypothermia can be a real risk. That's why canyoners wear wetsuits and know to pay attention to their bodies and the bodies of their companions.

Why should you try canyoning?

There's the obvious benefits like improving your health through exploration and spending time out in nature, but a more persuasive argument can be made through pictures. Canyoners see some of nature’s most magnificent wonders, like these:

Fun games to pass the time on your next roadtrip.

Road trip games can pass the time on a long trip.

Roadtrips are an enjoyable way to see changing scenery, a chance to stay overnight in retro roadside motels, and an excuse to pull over to see the quirky roadside attractions that you’ll only find in small town America.

But road trips also mean long stretches of flat highway where the oohs and ahhs slow down, the snacks run out, and you need a break from the podcast you’ve been streaming.

Pass the time in the car with a game of 'Would You Rather?'

Enter road trip games. They’ll help you pass the time between stops and hopefully squash any questions like “are we there, yet?”.

From games that can be played among a group of friends or couples to road trip games to entertain kids, these games will help keep you entertained on the road.

Top 7 Road Trip Games to Play

1. table topics.

Table Topics is a deck full of fun conversation starter cards. The game is recommended for ages 12 and up, and the cards can spur conversation between a couple or a group. The deck has 135 cards and questions range from: “Is it more important to be book smart or street smart?” and “If you could have front-row seats to any concert who would you like to see?”

The scribe in charge of the Mad Libs tablet will be prompted to ask participants for verbs, adjectives, nouns, and so on, which will then be put into a short narrative. The catch: No one knows the context that the words they toss out will be put in, so the story ends up being a goofy one. This is a great game for kids in elementary school who are starting to learn the ins and outs of nouns, adjectives and the like.

3. “Would You Rather?”

You could come up with your own scenarios for a game of “Would You Rather” where you pit two outrageous scenarios against one another. But the “Would You Rather” deck of cards is loaded with pre-set predicaments: “Would you rather own a machine that makes any food you want or prints $50 per week?” The family edition has 200 cards that were made with multi-generation road trips in mind.

4. License Plate Game

A road trip classic, and a fun one to play with kids, the license plate game challenges everyone in the car to collectively spot license plates from all 50 states. Pro tip: Print out a map of the United States to keep track of all the states you’ve collected.

When the karaoke is over, play a round of song trivia.

5. License Plate Word Scramble

When you’ve already done your Wordle for the day, you can engage your fellow passengers with a game of word scramble. Just look at a plate in a nearby lane and extract the letter — then challenge everyone to come up with a word with the letters in the plate. For example, if the license plate has the letters NKE in it, the word could be “Banker.”

6. Song Trivia

Every great road trip has a good playlist. But turn your tunes into a game by seeing who can name the singer, song title, and, for a bonus round, the year the song came out. You can set up a playlist in advance for this game or just scroll through the stations.

7. The Geography Game

If you loved social studies as a kid, this game is for you. One person starts the game by throwing out a geographic location (i.e. city, state, mountain region, river, etc.). Let’s say the starting word is California. The next person then comes with a location that starts with the last letter of the previous name, so, in this case, the letter “A,” which could be Alaska, Appalachians, Atlanta, and so on. You could mix up the themes, too, or narrow the categories, too. Other categories could be types of food, animals, countries, or band names.

Kidnapping survivor and activist Elizabeth Smart enjoyed some fun in the sun on a family trip this week in Palm Springs, California.

Smart, 36, shared snippets of the getaway on social media, showing her poolside and sporting an array of swimsuits in between dips with her kids, board game sessions and family dinners.

The married mom of three last month celebrated the 21st anniversary of her rescue after being kidnapped at knifepoint at 14 years old from her Salt Lake City home in 2002.

She spent a grueling nine months at the hands of religious fanatic Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, who drugged, starved and raped her.

“Pool time equals best time,” she wrote in one post to her Instagram Story with her goggle-glad daughters on her lap.

In other photos, Smart posed at a Mexican restaurant with her crew, smiled next to a completed “Star Wars” puzzle and snuggled up to her husband, musician Matthew Gilmour, the Daily Mail reported .

She posed in beachwear including a fashionable black cover-up, oversized sunglasses and a sexy black bikini and linked the spring break necessities for her 245,000 followers.

In another, she threw her head back and floated in a turquoise suit that matched the serene water.

The trip, which her father and his husband also took part in, was a well-deserved break for the activist, film producer, author and television commentator.

Smart has become an outspoken advocate for kidnapped children and sexual assault victims and founded the  Elizabeth Smart Foundation  in 2011. She also launched Smart Defense, a program for teaching women the skills to defend themselves.

Last month, she celebrated the passage of a bill on child sexual abuse prevention in Utah that she helped advocate for.

Smart is now producing a Lifetime film on Tanya Kach, who was kidnapped in 1995 and held captive for a decade by her middle school security guard, People Magazine reported.

“My life is far from perfect but I’m so happy and grateful for the life I have today,” Smart wrote in a Facebook post on the anniversary of her rescue.

“When I was kidnapped, I thought I’d never finish school, go to college, fall in love, get married, or have a family,” Smart continued. “I thought every dream I had for myself was stolen. For me, today is a celebration of all the happy moments of my life, and a reminder to never give up.”

Smart was found about 14 miles from her home on March 12, 2003.

Mitchell was sentenced in 2011 and is serving two life terms. Barzee was released from prison in 2018 despite pleas to keep her locked up.

Your guide to the 50th SUN 'n FUN Aerospace Expo in Lakeland

L akeland's  SUN n' FUN Aerospace Expo is celebrating a milestone at this year's event, which kicked off Tuesday morning at the Aerospace Center for Excellence.

The annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts will be the convention's 50th year since opening in 1974 as a 'fly-in' event. Since then, it has grown to Florida's "largest annual convention of any kind," attracting "over 200,000 visitors" each year, according to the non-profit's website .

The six-day event has everything from an aircraft showcase, hands-on workshops, educational forums, new technology as well as a "Family Fun Zone."

Airshows during the day and nighttime have historically been the most popular for visitors. Daily airshows are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There are two separate night airshows on Wednesday and Saturday starting at 7 p.m.

Special airshow acts include:

  • U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds
  • U.S. Navy F-18 Super Hornet Demo Team
  • U.S. Air Force F-35A Demo Team
  • TORA TORA TORA
  • Commemorative Air Force Warbirds
  • Commemorative Air Force Rise Above: Red Tail Squadron and Ghost Squadron Debut

To help kick off day one, there's a special opening night concert on Tuesday by country music stars, Dylan Scott and Sara Evans.

On the ground, you'll be able to get up close to more than 500 acres of aircraft including military planes, vintage planes, seaplanes, lightplanes and rotorcraft. There are also plenty of hands-on activities for the kids.

The organization's president and CEO, Gene Conrad, said that over 2,000 volunteers worked together to set up and organize the expo this year.

All proceeds from the expo fund the organization's programs and resources, particularly through the Aerospace Center for Excellence. ACE focuses on STEM-related aerospace education through summer camps, scholarships and outreach.

The event runs until April 14, 2024. Single-day tickets are $45 for adults, and $20 for kids older than 10 years old. Anyone younger gets free admission. Tickets for the entire week are available as well. Special pricing is available for Florida residents and spots to camp on-site.
