A Natural Wonderland on Land and Sea

The Cayman Islands lie in the western Caribbean between Cuba and Cental America; a British territory that due to its popularity both for leisure and offshore financial dealings has numerous air links that make it one of the region's most accessible island destinations. Comprising three islands - Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, each with its own personality and attractions, the Cayman group is a charter sailing holiday location the equal of any tropical island destination. Charters out of the Caymans also offer the opportunity to include Cuba in your boat charter itinerary.

Cayman Brac

Have it All on your Independent Caymans Cruise

The Cayman Islands is predominantly a crewed-charter destination, with a return stretch of open-water sailing required to visit all three islands. The largest is Grand Cayman, the point of entry at the capital George Town’s international airport.

The Grand Cayman Experience

George Town has all the facilities and sophistication of any major tourist destination, with several land-based attractions to enjoy before or after your charter period.Once aboard, your crew will have all the local knowledge to take you to the best places around the island.

The Caymans have great appeal among divers. If diving is not your thing, there are still plenty of marine attractions on Grand Cayman well worth the experience. Join the cruise ship crowds and wade with the rays at Stingray City, pay a visit to the Turtle Centre, or just take advantage of any opportunity for reef snorkelling.

Nature's Best on Cayman Brac

From Grand Cayman it’s a 120km (75 mile) sail to the much smaller and almost flat Cayman Brac. First impressions are of an island with continuous rugged coastline dropping off into deep water without sign of inviting bays in which to anchor. Fortunately the Cayman Government has laid moorings all around the island, and your crew will select one that’s suitable for the conditions.

Go ashore and enjoy the lush forest cover filed with birdsong emanating from numerous species, some of which are endangered. Multiple trails enable easy access into this wonderful natural space, also home to colourful native plants and endemic iguana.  Cayman Brac has a number of villages and a small tourism infrastructure with a regional airport and the inevitable cruise ship visits. But it’s big enough for everyone to enjoy the unique landscape and natural environment that is the main attraction.

Peaceful Little Cayman, and beyond

Last but not least of the Caymans trio is nearby Little Cayman, the most peaceful and secluded with its almost deserted, soft-sand beaches on which to laze. Little Cayman is best known for its dive sites, the most famous being Bloody Bay Wall, just 100 feet below the surface then dropping off for nearly a mile. This stunning backdrop to a prolific marine life habitat is a highlight for charterers able to access it.

An extended Caymans Island charter creates the opportunity to include southern Cuba in your itinerary. The distance from Cayman Brac/Little Cayman to Cuba’s Jardines de la Reina Archipelago is similar to the sail back to Grand Cayman, while the more developed Cayo Largo is 250km (155 miles) from Grand Cayman and home base. If doing a relatively long passage, your crew will schedule the crossing to the most convenient day/night hours, conditions permitting.

Transatlantic cruises provide an exciting opportunity for travelers to experience what it’s like to sail across an ocean while visiting many glamorous ports of call along the journey. Aside from spending many uninterrupted days at sea, a transatlantic cruise to Europe from the USA (and vice versa) often includes stops at popular European destinations such as Lisbon, Palma de Mallorca, Rome, and Provence before or after making the long trek at sea.

If you’re thinking of cruising between the USA and Europe but are not sure what to expect during the long journey, here are some of the fun activities you’ll do during those days at sea, all of the exciting destinations you’ll visit, and the best times of the year to take an unforgettable transatlantic journey across the ocean.

What’s a transatlantic cruise?

Ship exterior of Celebrity Beyond

Transatlantic cruises are cruises that sail anywhere across the Atlantic Ocean from one continent to another. Most cruises that travel across the Atlantic either depart from Europe and end in the United States, or the other way around.

In the cruising industry, transatlantic sailings are also called repositioning cruises . Repositioning cruises are cruises that sail from one region of the world to another after the tourist season in one area has ended and the ship then relocates to another area, most often with a warmer climate.

When’s the best time to cruise from Europe to the USA?

European cruise season starts in April and ends in November. Most transatlantic cruises set sail in the shoulder season months of April, October, and November.

Picturesque landscape of Reykjavik, Iceland including houses and mountain as backdrop

Cruises to Europe from the USA usually set sail in April in order to get to Europe in time for the high summer tourist season, which kicks off in late May. After the high cruise season in the Mediterranean and Europe ends, ships need to relocate once again, therefore cruises from Europe to the USA usually depart in October and November. Some transatlantic cruises to Iceland and Greenland set sail in August.

Eastern Caribbean vs. Western Caribbean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

E astern Caribbean and Western Caribbean cruises might sound similar when you start researching them. Just about wherever you go, you'll enjoy sunny days, sandy shores, sparkling seas and balmy breezes. But the reality is that Caribbean islands' personalities can vary as widely as those of regions of the U.S.

Additionally, it's important to remember that Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean refer to cruise ship route types rather than literal descriptions of locations on a map.

So, which Caribbean itinerary is your best choice? Read on for our evaluation on how to make the right choice for your next cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Embarkation ports

Typically, you sail to the Eastern Caribbean from ports in Florida — in most cases, Miami , Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral , the port on the coast near Orlando — as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico, and a few Eastern Seaboard ports, such as New York City. For Western Caribbean sailings, you can depart from Florida ports, as well as Galveston, Texas; Mobile, Alabama; and New Orleans.

So, which embarkation port is best for you? There's no secret to it: whichever one you can get to the fastest and the cheapest.

That said, if you see an itinerary that embarks in the Caribbean, know that you'll get a little extra time in the islands in exchange for that longer flight. On the flip side, itineraries that embark in the Northeast require you to sail the oft-rough seas of the Atlantic to get down to those pale blue Caribbean waters. You will also need longer than a week to sail from more northern home ports to destinations beyond the Bahamas.

Itineraries

Weeklong, round-trip cruises are common in both parts of the Caribbean, but you can also find shorter and longer options.

Common ports in the Eastern Caribbean include both big, crowded, touristy options and some smaller, sleepier islands, which are typically only accessible by small ships or during shore excursions. Itineraries might include visits to Grand Turk, St. Maarten (the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin), the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix), the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda), Puerto Rico and ports in the Bahamas — including the cruise lines' private islands . Small vessels (and some larger vessels) might also call in Antigua, Anguilla and Dominica, as well as the tony island of St. Barts.

In the Western Caribbean, you might call on Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Honduras, Belize and Mexican ports such as Cozumel, Costa Maya and Progreso. Some of these ports — in the thick of a strong Caribbean cruise season — can be lined up with large cruise ships; for example, you can find as many as seven ships calling on Cozumel on a busy day.

Beaches and water sports

If your fantasy is stretching out in the sun and splashing in the surf, you'll want to pick your Caribbean itinerary carefully so you can live the dream. When it comes to beaches, the Eastern Caribbean islands have the Western ones beat in most cases, but you can find sandy shores on most Caribbean itineraries.

With just a short cab ride from the cruise port, you can escape the throngs and find a quiet, sandy strand to call your own. After a few hours in the sun, you'll agree it was worth the effort, especially in Grand Turk and the Virgin Islands.

When it comes to water sports, some of the easiest opportunities to paddleboard, sail, kayak and parasail are available on the cruise lines' private islands, mainly located in the Bahamas. At Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay , Holland America 's Half Moon Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line 's Harvest Caye and Great Stirrup Cay, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee , and MSC Cruises' Ocean Cay , you'll find more opportunities to get out on the water than you could take advantage of in a day.

You can find visits to cruise line private islands on many weeklong or longer Eastern or Western Caribbean itineraries.

Shore excursions

Where the Mexico ports of Cancun, Costa Maya and Progreso in the Western Caribbean shine is in historical sites, especially when it comes to the spectacular pre-Colombian Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza and Tulum. You can tour Mayan sites from Belize as well.

Equally impressive, though a totally different experience, is a day spent snorkeling or diving around the reefs off the Western Caribbean coasts of arid Grand Cayman (known for sea turtles and rays), Jamaica (known for underwater cliffs and unusually colorful coral) and Belize (where you might even get to see whale sharks).

That said, you'll have your pick of island tours, water-based activities and boat rides of all kinds on any itinerary you choose.

In both the Eastern and Western Caribbean, you'll find ports that are designed for shopping, with a mix of luxury boutiques and knickknack stores spread out around the cruise ship terminal.

In Nassau, Bahamas, the famous straw market sells everything from cheaply made souvenirs to local crafts, T-shirts and designer knockoffs. St. Thomas and Grand Cayman also offer a mix of jewelry shops and bric-a-brac, as well as duty-free liquor stores offering rum tastings.

If you luck into an itinerary with St. Barts on the roster, you'll find small French-Caribbean boutiques full of chic resortwear and elegant sandals, as well as rum made with Tahitian vanilla beans.

Bottom line

While every cruise line has its own personality and a type of traveler that would find it ideal, so does every itinerary. You'll want to choose your route carefully and research the individual islands to make sure you are picking not only a ship but also a sailing that plays to your preferences.

That said, our advice is that if you're a beach lover who is looking for peace amid the palm trees, the Eastern Caribbean is the way to go. Those who sunburn easily and are looking for other entertainment than just the joy of their toes in the sand — including history buffs and divers — should consider the Western Caribbean their ideal choice.

If you're looking for a fun-in-the-sun vacation, with a mix of active and relaxing days, you'll be happy no matter where your Caribbean cruise takes you.

Multiple cruises rerouted, cancelled due to Hurricane Beryl

Ryan Mackey , Digital Journalist

MIAMI – A number of cruise lines have changed itineraries to avoid Hurricane Beryl.

After striking the small island of Carriacou at the entrance of the eastern Caribbean as a 150 mph Category 4 hurricane on Monday, Beryl continued to intensify through the overnight hours, becoming a 165 mph Category 5 hurricane by early Tuesday , according to Local 10 Hurricane Specialist and Storm Surge Expert Michael Lowry.

Multiple cruise companies announced Tuesday that they are making significant adjustments to their Caribbean sailings as Hurricane Beryl approaches, prioritizing the safety of guests and crew.

Royal Caribbean said its Icon of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, and Harmony of the Seas ships have all changed itineraries due to the hurricane, according to their website. Read the full list of changes by clicking here.

A spokesperson for the cruise line released a statement to Local 10 News Tuesday, which you can read here:

“The safety of our guests, crew and communities we visit is our top priority. Along with our Chief Meteorologist, we are closely monitoring the progression of Hurricane Beryl, and are making adjustments to some of our Caribbean sailings for the comfort and safety of our guests and crew. Guests and travel advisors will be notified directly of any necessary changes.”

Norwegian Cruise Line also reported amendments to the routes for its Jade and Takeaway ships due to the hurricane.

The cruise line has significantly altered the itinerary for its week-long Norwegian Breakaway voyage that departed from Miami on Sunday.

According to a letter sent to guests, the cruise will no longer stop in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, Costa Maya, and Cozumel in Mexico. Instead, the ship will visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas.

Norwegian released the following statement which was obtained by Local 10 News on Tuesday.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew and communities we visit is always a top priority. We are monitoring the projected path of Hurricane Beryl and have amended the itineraries for Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Breakaway’s current voyages. Please see the letters attached, which were provided to all guests on board, for full details,” a Norwegian spokesperson stated.

The Carnival Horizon has canceled its scheduled stop in the Cayman Islands, while the Carnival Liberty will visit Cozumel on Tuesday instead of on July 5.

Additionally, “Disney Fantasy, which is currently sailing a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary, will no longer call on Falmouth, Jamaica on Wednesday. The ship will instead spend the day at sea,” according to a Disney spokesperson.

These changes come as part of the cruise lines’ efforts to navigate safely through the impending storm.
