Madhya Pradesh: The Perfect 6-day Itinerary

Madhya Pradesh is one of the most incredible states in India. The entire landscape of this central Indian state is teeming with historical ruins, some of which even date to pre-historic times. Here lies Bhimbetka Caves with paintings of pre-historic humans, the Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi, the architectural marvels of Mandu, the temples of Khajuraho, and so much more. It is also a treasure trove for nature and wildlife enthusiasts thanks to its National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries at Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Pench, Panna, and so on. Moreover, it has a number of religious hotspots such as Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Mahakaleshwar, and Amarkantak. All in all, if you are a traveller, Madhya Pradesh should certainly feature on your bucket list.

Chandela emblem

However, being the second largest state of India, it is quite impossible to cover the entire Madhya Pradesh in one go. Generally, Madhya Pradesh has four broad sections – the western part consisting of Indore, Mandu, Ujjain, Omkareshwar, and Bhopal; the eastern part comprising Khajuraho, Panna, Orchha, and Chitrakoot; the northern part encompassing Gwalior, Shivpuri, and Chanderi; the southern part covering Jabalpur, Amarkantak, Bandhavgarh, Pench, and Kanha.

Chhatri of Rani Kamlapati

For this trip, we concentrated on the eastern and northern parts of Madhya Pradesh. We basically wanted to explore the archaeological sites and historical ruins found in these areas. It took us 6 full days to cover these parts. Here goes our 6-days itinerary for exploring Madhya Pradesh.

Day 1: Reaching Khajuraho and exploring the temples

A pleasant autumn morning welcomed us as we alighted from the train in Khajuraho . The Gita Jayanti Express, which we boarded from New Delhi the previous evening, reached Khajuraho 30 minutes before its scheduled time. Outside the station, it was bustling with passengers, who haggled with a handful of auto-rickshaws and shared trekkers.

We took an auto to cover the 6 km ride to the temple town of Khajuraho. As we drove through the bumpy road, Khajuraho reminded us of Hampi. Like Hampi, we could inhale the whiff of history even before we entered the main town of Khajuraho.

We checked in at Hotel Harmony, which is just a stone’s throw away from the Western Group of Temples. Earlier, we had decided to take a rest and a quick nap before exploring Khajuraho as we were dead tired after a helluva journey (that consisted of two overnight train journeys and air travel). However, once we had set our feet in Khajuraho, all our exhaustion vanished into thin air. We swiftly showered, got dressed, devoured dosas and pooris, and set out on our adventure.

A bit of Khajuraho’s history will be handy here. Khajuraho was the religious capital of the mighty Chandelas, who went on an extraordinary spree of constructing temples, seen never before or afterwards in the entire Indian subcontinent. The Chandelas built as many as 85 temples in Khajuraho, an unmatched feat that has immortalized the name of the Chandelas in the annals of Indian history. The temples in Khajuraho testify to the exceptional engineering skill of the Chandela architects. All in all, the Khajuraho temples manifest the zenith of India’s Nagara style of architecture. However, Khajuraho went into oblivion from the 11th century and its history was revived by the eminent archaeologist Alexander Cunningham in the 19th century.

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, Madhya Pradesh

The massive temples are living specimens of the excellent skill of Chandela architects and sculptors and prove their mastery. The mere mention of Khajuraho evokes images of erotic sculptures of couples engaged in copulation. In fact, Khajuraho has become synonymous with erotic temple sculptures, which depict various forms of ‘mithuna’. Funnily enough, only 10% of Khajuraho’s temple carvings are erotic in nature. The enormous volume of carvings on the walls of Khajuraho temples belongs to Hindu deities, Dikpalas, demi-gods like Ganas and Gandharvas, Celestial Women such as Apsaras and Surasunadaris, amorous couples, animals, secular scenes like war and hunting, and geometric and floral designs.

Erotic sculptures of Khajuraho

The temples in Khajuraho are spread across a vast area. Hence, they are categorized into three sections: Western Group, Eastern Group, and Southern Group.

We started exploring Khajuraho with the Western Group of Temples. The temples in this area are the most well-preserved and perhaps the most beautiful ones in Khajuraho.

Lakshmana Temple

One by one, we visited the Lakshmana Temple (dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu), Devi Shrine (a statue of Brahmani sits inside), Varaha Mandapa, Kandariya Mahadeva Temple (devoted to Lord Shiva), Mahadeva Shrine, Devi Jagadambi Temple (houses an idol of Devi Parvati), Chitragupta Temple (consecrated to Surya, the Sun God), Vishwanatha Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva), and Chausath Yogini Temple.

Devi Jagadambi Temple

Exploring the Western Group of Temples took the entire morning. It was time for lunch when we finished. Following lunch, we visited the new ASI museum near Hotel Lalit. The museum is vast and has well-stacked galleries.

Next, we went to the two temples of Southern Group. These temples are situated a bit away from the main town. Both the Duladeva Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Chaturbhuja Temple (accommodating an admirable Vishnu statue in ‘tribhanga’ position) were extraordinarily beautiful.

Duladeva Temple

Day 2: Visiting Eastern Group of Temples and Raneh Waterfalls:

We started our second day with a lip-smacking breakfast at Raja Café. Later, we visited the Eastern Group of Temples. This cluster of temples is located around the Khajura Sagar, also known as the Ninora Tal. The main temples of this group are Vamana Temple (dedicated to Vishnu’s 5 th incarnation), Javari Temple (devoted to a four-armed Vishnu), Brahma Temple (houses a Shiva linga with four faces), and Ghantai Temple (ruins of a Jain temple).

Vamana Temple

Afterwards, we explored the Jain temples of Khajuraho such as the Parshvanatha Temple, Adinatha Temple, and Shantinatha Temple. With this, we finished our temple trail in Khajuraho.

Parshwanatha Temple

Post-lunch, we decided to visit the Raneh Waterfalls. It lies some 20 km away from Khajuraho and can be reached within 30 minutes.

Raneh is a natural waterfall on the Ken River. The river’s erosional activity has led to the formation of 98 feet deep canyon made up of granite in varying shades of colours ranging from pink and red to black and grey.

Raneh Waterfalls

We finished exploring Khajuraho with the Light and Sound Program held at the Western Group.

Day 3: A quick stop at Dhubela on the way to Orchha:

On our third day, we bade Khajuraho adieu and headed towards Orchha. En route, we halted at Dhubela . At present, Dhubela is an otherwise run-of-the-mill village, characterized by lush greenery. But, in the past, it served as the centre of Maharaja Chhatrasal’s Bundelkhand kingdom. Dhubela has also become synonymous with Chhatrasal’s legendary daughter, Mastani. Mastani, who was later married to Peshwa Baji Rao I, spent a good part of her life in Dhubela and so, Dhubela is often referred to as the land of Mastani.

Dhubela Museum

Dhubela still bears the testimony of a once-prosperous kingdom. The village is dotted with various architectural specimens built by Chhatrasal, who is famously called the ‘Lion of Bundelkhand’. We visited the following places in Dhubela:

1. Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum – it once served as the palace of Chhatrasal and is now converted into a fascinating museum showcasing Gupta and post-Gupta era artefacts excavated from various parts of Bundelkhand.

2. Mastani Mahal -a palace built by Chhatrasal for his beloved daughter Mastani.

Mastani Mahal

3. Hriday Shah Palace – a dilapidated palace built by Chhatrasal’s eldest son, Hriday Shah.

4. Chhatri of Maharani Kamlapati – the cenotaph of Chhatrasal’s first wife Kamlapati which stands on the bank of the Dhubela Lake and is decorated with around 140 Bundeli-style of paintings.

5. Chhatri of Maharaja Chhatrasal – the cenotaph of the valiant ruler built by Peshwa Baji Rao I.

6. Chhatri of Chhatrasal’s Horse – the cenotaph of Chhatrasal’s faithful horse, Bhale Bhai.

7. Sheetal Garhi – a 17 th -century fortress built by Keerat Singh, the grandson of Chhatrasal.

8. Mahoba Gate – a spectacular gate built by Chhatrasal.

After our brief yet memorable sojourn in Dhubela, we drove straight ahead and reached Orchha in the afternoon.

We quickly checked in the hotel and head out to catch the sunset at Betwa River with the Chhatris on the backdrop. Alas! No sooner had we reached the riverside than the rain started. Our plan of enjoying the sunset sadly went down the drain.

Day 4: Exploring the erstwhile Bundeli capital of Orchha:

The next morning, thankfully the weather turned sunny and perfect for exploring the historic town of Orchha . Before embarking on the journey, let’s learn one or two bits about Orchha’s history. Orchha was made the capital of the Bundeli kingdom by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh in 1531 CE. It remained the capital of the entire Bundelkhand from 1531 to 1783 CE.  Rugged hills, dense forest and the Betwa or Vetravati River surrounded Orchha thus securing it and hiding it from the onslaught of the Mughal forces. In fact, the word ‘Orchha’ aptly means hidden. The town remained hidden from the Mughals and continues to remain elusive to tourists and explorers even today.

Outline of Orchha

We kicked off our adventure in Orchha with its eponymous fort. The imposing Orchha Fort is an amalgamation of massive and magnificently built palaces. It took us over 4 hours to explore the entire Orchha Fort complex.  Also, we opted for the audio tour guide of Madhya Pradesh tourism. It was cheap (INR 25 per pre-recorded audio guide along with headphones), incredibly informative and convenient, and also gave us the freedom to explore the sites as per our choice.

Gradually, we took a tour of various sections of the Fort:

1. Diwani-e-Aam – a court where the King used to hold assemblies with his council of ministers.

2. Raja Mahal – it was built by Raja Madhukar Shah and characterized by a fusion of Mughal and Rajput styles of architecture as well as lavish Bundeli style of paintings.

Parts of Orchha Fort

3. Jahangir Mahal – it was constructed by Raja Bir Singh Deo Bundela for Mughal Emperor Jahangir and set apart by 8 domes and 236 chambers, intricately carved doors with elaborate arches and interiors decorated with trellis work, lapis lazuli inlays, and glazed blue tiles.

Majestic Fort

4. Sheesh Mahal – it was built as a pleasure retreat and is now converted into a heritage hotel by Madhya Pradesh Tourism.

Sheesh mahal

5. Rai Parveen Mahal – it was the home of the beautiful courtesan, Rai Parveen.

After travelling the nooks and crannies of the Orchha Fort for 4 hours, we took a quick rest and a brief lunch at the restaurant of the Sheesh Mahal. Recharging ourselves, we set out to explore the rest of Orchha.

Our next destination was the iconic Chhatris of Orchha. The Chhatris are cenotaphs of Bundela rulers of Orchha, earmarking the ground where the Kings were cremated.

There are 14 Chhatris, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Apart from Bir Singh Deo’s Chhatri which resembles a palace, the cenotaphs follow the Nagara style of temple architecture. They are modelled on ‘panchayatana’ style with ‘garbhagriha’ inside and ‘shikharas’ at the top.

Chhatris of Orchha

Next, we climbed a small hillock to reach the breathtaking Laxmi Narayan Temple. It was built by Raja Bir Singh Deo Bundela. The temple is a unique structure as it resulted from the mingling of architectural styles of both temple and fort.

Lakshmi Narayan Temple

The most intriguing feature of this temple is the presence of vivid murals on its interior walls and ceilings. The lively, colourful paintings are the finest specimens of Bundeli style of painting, which resulted from a marriage of Rajput and Mughal styles.

Wall paintings

Afterwards, we reached the sky-kissing Chaturbhuj Temple. It was here that the idol of Ram Chandra was originally supposed to be placed. The 105-metre-high temple now houses a statue of Shree Krishna and Shree Radhika, worshipped daily at regular intervals.

The exterior of this massive temple is ornately decorated with floral motifs and religious emblems. In stark contrast, the interior is plain and austere.

Our last stop at Orchha was the Ram Raja Temple. It is the only temple in India where Ram Chandra is worshipped as King. The evening arati at Ram Raja Temple is a spectacle to behold.

Ram Raja Temple

After finishing the tour of Orchha, we drove to Jhansi. From Jhansi, we boarded the train and reached Gwalior in the evening.

Day 5: Waking up in a cloudy Gwalior and exploring Morena:

We woke up to peacocks’ call on our fifth morning. We were staying at Neemrana’s Deobagh in Gwalior, and the peacocks’ divine call served as our alarm clocks. Instead of rushing out to explore Gwalior, we took it slow and enjoyed a relaxing morning on the well-curated lawn of Deobagh with the peacocks and squirrels as our companions.

After a comforting breakfast, we decided to explore the archaeological ruins of the three sites in Morena – Bateshwar, Garhi Padavali, and Mitaoli. With a cloudy sky and a light drizzle, we set out for Morena.

Our first stop for the day was the intriguing Bateshwar Group of Temples . The temple complex, situated amidst the once infamous Chambal ravines, was previously a jumble of countless ruined structures. Gradually, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) went to unprecedented lengths and restored many of the shrines here. At present, Bateshwar has around 200 temples. In fact, ASI is still engaged in restoration works in Bateshwar.

Bateshwar Group of Temples

The name Bateshwar is probably derived from Bhooteshwar, another name of Lord Shiva. According to experts, the Bateshwar Group of Temples belongs to the Gurjara – Pratihara era. The shrines of Bateshwar were built between 750 – 800 CE. Eventually, the temples were reduced to mere rubbles. It is however unclear as to how these shrines were destroyed. No sign of invasion or attack was found here. Presently, the common consensus is that an earthquake in the 13th century led to the decay of Bateshwar. Gradually, the debris was engulfed by the forest and Bateshwar remained hidden from the prying eyes.

Omgoing restoration work

As we walked, the riveting archaeological site began to unfold before us. Present-day Bateshwar can best be described as rows of small temples arranged in neat order amidst the scattered ruins. The entire site is filled with broken pillars, wrecked friezes, and fragmented sculptures. A Hanuman statue, smeared with orange vermillion, stands at the centre and is still worshipped by the locals. Needless to say, we were overwhelmed by the plenitude of artefacts in Bateshwar.

Hanuman statue at Bateshwar

After Bateshwar, we visited the Garhi Padavali where stands an insanely carved ‘mukha mandapa’ of a temple, the main portion of which is now lost in oblivion. It is undoubtedly one of the most intricately carved temples in India. There is hardly an inch left without elaborate sculptures. Every pillar and ceiling is decorated with ornate carvings.

Garhi Padavali

We were stunned by the exquisite wall panels showcasing the Trimurti, the birth of Shri Krishna, Goddess Chamunda, the Sun God Surya, and the slaying of Abhimanyu in the battle of Kurukshetra.

Ceiling panel

Our last stop in Morena was the Chausath Yogini Temple of Mitaoli . At present, it goes by the name of Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple. The temple is circular and roofless, as tantric rituals involved worshipping the environment along with its five principal elements, also due to the belief that the yoginis could fly. Due to its hypaethral structure, it is also believed that this temple was built for the study of astrology, astronomy, and mathematics by observing the transition of the sun.

The amazing sculpture of the temple

The temple is circular, with a radius of around 52 m. The outer round-shaped wall has 64 small chambers with an open ‘mandapa’ supported by pilasters and pillars. These chambers once accommodated the representation of the ‘yoginis’. At present, they contain small Shiva lingas. At the centre, there stands another circular temple, which houses the Ekattarso Mahadeva linga.

Inside the temple of Mitaoli

As we strolled around the temple and peeked inside the minuscule chambers, we sensed the strong presence of a spiritual aura. This may be due to the fact that this Chausath Yogini temple was one of the foremost places in ancient India for practising Tantric rituals.

Mitaoli Temple

After exploring Morena, we decided to go on a food trail in the streets of Gwalior. We relished the renowned Boondi Laddoo of Bahadura Sweets, Gajaak from the well-known Daulat Ram Gajaak Bhandar, Paneer Jalebi and Kachori at Jodhpur Mishtaan Bhandar, and Gilori Petha at the iconic Panchiraaj.

Day 6: A date with the eponymous Fort of Gwalior:

On our last day in Madhya Pradesh, we visited the resplendent Gwalior Fort . The Fort, set atop a solitary rocky outcrop of the Vindhyas and spread across a staggering 3 square kilometres and rising 36 feet, is a wonder in itself.

The Gwalior Fort

The fort is comprised of various monuments that date back as early as the 7th century CE. It took us almost 5 hours to complete exploring this enormous Fort.

1. Sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras – the rock-cut sculptures found in the Gopachal and Siddhanchal Hills.

Jaina statues at Gwalior Fort

2 . Man Singh Palace – the grandest and most stunning section of the Gwalior Fort characterized by six colossal cylindrical towers capped with cupolas, corbelled brackets, elaborate lattice-work, chhattris, and vibrant mosaic tiles.

Inside the Man Singh Palace

3. ASI Museum – it is situated inside a building which dates back to the British era.

4. Kirti Mandi – the handiwork of Raja Kirti Singh Tomar with faint traces of painting and coloured tiles.

5. Vikramaditya Palace – it was built in 1516 CE and named after Raja Vikramaditya, son of Raja Man Singh.

6. Jahangir Mahal & Shahjahan Mahal – it was used as a resting place for Mughal troops rather than for royalty.

7. Teli Ka Mandir, one of the loftiest buildings within the premises of the Gwalior Fort and set apart by its hybrid architecture of Dravida and Nagara styles.

Teli Ka Mandir

8. Saas-Bahu Temple – these twin temples were built by the Kacchapaghata ruler, Mahipala, in 1093 CE and originally called Sahasra Bahu Temple as it was dedicated to a thousand-armed form of Lord Vishnu.

22 10 07 MP22 1401

9. Chaturbhuj Temple – it houses an inscription that contains one of the earliest known uses of mathematical zero.

10. Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhor – it was constructed to commemorate Guru Hargobind Singh’s incarceration inside the Gwalior Fort by Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

11. Gurjari Mahal – a charming palace built by Raja Man Singh for his Gujjar queen, Mariganayani.

Post-lunch, we went to the Jai Vilas Palace. This opulent palace is the residence of the Scindias, the erstwhile rulers of Gwalior. Originally, this lavish palace was constructed to welcome the then Prince of Wales. It was designed by Lt. Col. Sir Michael Filose and displays a fusion of both Tuscan and Corinthian architectural styles. Although it is still used by the Scindias as their residence, a part of it with 35 rooms has been converted into Jiyaji Rao Scindia Museum.

Jai Vilas Palace

During sunset, we paid a visit to the tomb of Muhammad Ghaus, who was a 16th-century Sufi saint and also a prolific music master. Mian Tansen was one of his foremost disciples.

Mohammad Ghaus’s tomb was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Akbar and depicts a synthesis of the Lodhi style of architecture and structural ornamentation peculiar to Gujarat. The mausoleum is a marvellous specimen of delicate craftsmanship. Built with sandstone, it is decorated with lattice or ‘jali’ works on all sides.

Tomb of Hauj Khas

In the same compound lies the final resting place of Sangeet Samrat Tansen. Compared to his master’s resting place, Tansen’s tomb is modest.

With Tansen’s Tomb, our Gwalior tour came to an end.

  • How To Spend 10 Days...

How to spend 10 days in Madhya Pradesh, India

The 10th-century Gwalior Fort is just one of Madhya Pradeshs many draws for visitors

A 10-day trip allows you to visit many of the highlights of the central-Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Here is a suggested itinerary.

Though most visitors to India will head straight to the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra, the country has so much more to offer. The often-overlooked central state of Madhya Pradesh has some amazing things to see, from a “hidden” town on the banks of the Betwa River, to Kanha National Park’s tigers .

Day 1: Bhopal and Sanchi

After checking into your hotel – Ivy Suites , a charming boutique B&B, and the top-end Noor-us-Sabah are both good options – take a train, bus or taxi to nearby Sanchi, a remarkable Buddhist temple that dates back to the third century BC.

Afterwards, travel back to Bhopal and explore the old city, home to the busy streets and colourful shops of the bazaar. Bhopal has several impressive mosques including the vast Darul Uloom Tajul Masajid. For dinner, sample some tasty kebabs at New Inn, an economical restaurant in the New Market area, or enjoy the views at Wind and Waves, which overlooks the Upper Lake.

Bhopal’s old city has several impressive mosques, notably the vast Darul Uloom Tajul Masajid

Days 2-3: Orchha

Take a morning train to Jhansi and then a bus, auto-rickshaw or taxi to Orchha , one of the most beguiling places in central India. On the banks of the Betwa River, this slow-paced town (whose name translates as “hidden place”) has an array of crumbling, forest-shrouded palaces, fortifications, temples, cenotaphs, tombs and gardens. The best place to stay is the Sheesh Mahal , a 19th-century palace that has been turned into a hotel by the state tourist authority.

Over the next day and a half, explore Orchha’s many historic monuments; the key sites are illuminated during the nightly sound and light show. There are several friendly traveller restaurants dotted around town, though the most elegant place to eat is the Sheesh Mahal, which often has live music and dance performances.

Orchha on the banks of the Betwa River is a slow-paced town whose name translates as “hidden place”

Days 4-5: Khajuraho

In the morning, take a bus or taxi to Khajuraho, where magnificent ancient temples are covered with frank – and often remarkably imaginative – erotic sculptures. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temples were constructed during the Chandella dynasty between the 10th and 12th centuries and have been wonderfully restored.

Khajuraho village has a wide range of guesthouses and hotels suitable for travellers of all budgets; Hotel Surya and Lalit Temple View are both solid options. Its popularity as a tourist destination means there are also plenty of good restaurants. Among the highlights are Mediterraneo, which offers authentic pizza and pasta, and Raja Café, whose menu features well-prepared dishes from across the globe.

Khajuraho is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Day 6: Jabalpur

Travelling from Khajuraho to Kanha National Park is a bit convoluted, but the chance to explore Madhya Pradesh’s premier tiger reserve means the hassle is more than worth it. Get up early, take a taxi to Satna, and then a train to the regional city of Jabalpur, where you can stay the night at the comfortable Kalchuri Residency or the smarter Narmada Jacksons . Dining options beyond the hotels are relatively limited, but the Indian Coffee House in the city centre is a decent option.

Days 7-8: Kanha National Park

Take an early bus or taxi from your accommodation to Kanha National Park, where idyllic woodlands, meadows and savannah are home to approximately 75 tigers, as well as numerous other species, such as wild dogs, barasingha deer, sloth bears and langur monkeys. Tourists can explore the park on morning and afternoon jeep safaris (known locally as “game drives”) where tiger sightings are common.

Meanwhile, the surrounding buffer zone is ideal for guided nature walks. Easily the best place to stay in the Kanha area is Shergarh , a gorgeous luxury camp surrounded by tranquil gardens. Budget travellers should try the Pugmark Resort .

Kanha National Park is home to approximately 75 tigers

Days 9-10: Indore and Mandu

After another morning game drive in the park, take a bus or taxi to the regional city of Jabalpur, where an overnight train departs for Madhya Pradesh’s industrial hub, Indore. After arriving in Indore, drop your luggage off at your accommodation – try mid-range Ginger or the fancier Lemon Tree – and take a taxi or bus to Mandu.

Set on a rocky plateau, this Medieval city’s ruined palaces, mosques and mausoleums make it an incredibly evocative place to explore. In the late afternoon, head back to Indore for dinner at Hotel Shreemaya .

Madhya Pradesh in a week – Itinerary and Travel Tips

by Ava and Sush · Published November 20, 2021 · Updated November 22, 2021

Madhya Pradesh (MP) offers a perfect admixture of Architecture, Nature and Wildlife. Think of regal forts, ancient temples, gushing waterfalls or lush forests – the state has it all. Fondly called the heart of India, it is still less explored and provides fresh views at every corner. And this is exactly why we enjoyed our trip to MP so much.

It took us a fair bit of research to come up with an itinerary for MP. Because it is the 2nd largest state in India and every part of it lures with a different kind of beauty. So here it is, an itinerary for your next trip to Madhya Pradesh including Gwalior, Jabalpur and Bandhavgarh National park.

Itinerary for Madhya Pradesh

  • Day 1 : Reach Gwalior. Explore Gwalior Fort
  • Day 2 : Visit Jai Vilas Palace Museum and Mohammed Ghaus (and Tansen) Tomb in the morning. In the 2nd half, check out the Sun Temple or visit the local markets for shopping. Catch train to Jabalpur in the evening.
  • Day 3 : Reach Jabalpur in the morning. Visit Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls. In the evening enjoy Narmada Aarti at Gwarighat.
  • Day 4 : Drive to Bandhavgarh. You can opt for an evening Safari this day or relax at the resort.
  • Day 5 : Morning Safari. Explore nearby area.
  • Day 6 : Drive back to Jabalpur and catch flight back home.

Details and alternate itineraries in the following sections.

Best time to visit Madhya Pradesh

October – November : This is the ideal time to visit keeping the weather condition in view. Rains would have receded by this time covering everything in a blanket of green. The core area in Bandhavgarh re-opens from 1st October for safaris providing better chances of tiger sighting. Boat ride in Bhedaghat opens from 15th Oct and Dhuandhar Waterfall will be in full force. The days are also clear for sightseeing.

December – March : Winters season is also a great time for visiting MP. The days are cool providing perfect opportunity for sightseeing and picnics.

For October to March time, make your bookings well in advance, especially for Forest stay and safaris since this is the peak season.

Avoid Summer months as the days get too hot and humid. Monsoon too is not ideal if you are planning for forest visit.

Detailed Itinerary and other tips

Reach Gwalior. Explore Gwalior Fort

This is the day you reach Gwalior. If  you reach early, then check into the hotel, freshen up and get ready to explore Gwalior Fort. As we had an afternoon flight from Bangalore, we reached late and spent the evening in the resort. If that is the case with you, you need to add another day to the itinerary. Rest on the day of arrival at your hotel and visit Gwalior Fort the next morning.

Now coming to the Fort, it is sprawled on top of a hill and needs at least half a day to cover. Majority of Gwalior attractions you may find over the internet are actually part of the fort itself. Since it could get tiring exploring this huge fort, we recommend not keeping any other attractions in the list for this day.

Here is a list of all the key points you can visit inside Gwalior Fort.

Maan Singh Mahal

The most  striking part of the fort is this almond coloured palace with dashing blue paintings all over. The interiors are as pretty with exquisite courtyards and corridors made of ornate walls and pillars. Enjoy the light and sound show that happens every evening at the amphitheatre near this Mahal and get to know the glorious history of Gwalior.

Other Mahals in the premises (Karan Mahal, Vikram Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, Shahjahan mahal etc.)

Close to the Maan Singh Mahal, there are many other mahals built inside Gwalior Fort. These mahals have a very different charm with their rustic look and are named after the rulers who built them. You can cover all of  these mahals in an hour or so.

Saas Bahu Temple

The name of the temple was interesting enough to pique our interest. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple was originally named Sahastrabahu, signifying Lord Vishnu in his 1000 arms form. But with time, the name was finally altered as Saas Bahu, meaning mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. The temple has a grand architecture and is full of intricate carvings that take you back in time. There is also a smaller temple in the compound that is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is equally beautiful.

Teli Ka Mandir

A towering 9th century temple with impressive carvings, Teli Ka Mandir has a very unique architectural design. There is nothing to see inside and also the interior has a very strong smell of bats. But the exterior of this 100 feet tall temple is definitely a visual delight.

Gurudwara data Bandi Chhor

A striking white Gurudwara made in the memory of the Sikh Guru who freed 52 Rajput kings from the custody of Mughla King Jahangir with his wit. Suitable for a quick visit if peaceful holy places interest you.

Rock cut Jain Sculptures at Gopachal Parvat

As you move up the hill towards the the fort, you will come across these skilfully chiselled Jain statues on both sides of the road. These rock-cut sculptures are believed to be carved during 7th century and though broken in parts are still a great sight.

Know before you go

  • As I mentioned earlier, the Fort is atop a hill. If you are going by a 4 wheeler, then you can directly go till the fort gate. But if you are taking an auto (tuk-tuk), then it will drop you at the entry point at the base of the hill. You can either walk or take a van to reach the fort.
  • From the auto drop point, it is around 1 kilometre to reach the gate of the Fort that houses all the Mahals including the Maan Singh Mahal. Then Saas Bahu Temple, Gurudwara and Teli ka Mandir are farther away from this gate and also away from each other. Unless you have a vehicle at your disposal, we recommend hiring a van from the auto drop point that would take you to all these locations one after the other. They give enough time to visit the points and charge a very reasonable amount of INR 550.
  • Entry tickets are applicable for the palaces as well as Saas Bahu Temple and Teli Ka Mandir. The ticket taken for Maan Singh Palace also includes entry to these 2 temples. So keep it handy even after the palace visit.
  • You need to take a different entry ticket for the other palaces (all included) inside the fort apart from Maan Singh Mahal.
  • Avoid the queue at the ticket counter and purchase the entry tickets for the fort online from  https://asi.payumoney.com/quick/gwf
  • Timing for light and sound show:
  • Summer (March – Oct) – Hindi: 7:30-8:15 PM, English: 8:30 to 9:15 PM
  • Winter (Nov-Feb) – Hindi: 6:30-7:15 PM, English: 7:30 to 8:15 PM
  • For more information on Gwalior, check out  mptourism.com/destination-gwalior.php

Visit Jai Vilas Palace Museum and Mohammed Ghaus (and Tansen) Tomb in the morning. In the 2nd half, check out the Sun Temple or visit the local markets for shopping. Catch train to Jabalpur in the evening.

Utilize this day to explore Jai Vilas Palace Museum and the tombs of Mohammed Ghaus and Tansen. The palace museum requires 2 hours (or more depending on your interest) and tomb takes maximum half an hour. You will be able to cover both these in the 1st half of the day itself. We decided to keep the evening at leisure as we wanted a relaxing trip. But if  you like covering more places, then use the 2nd half of the day to visit the Sun Temple and/or shop at the local bazaars.

Mohammed Ghaus (and Tansen) Tomb

Start the day early and head to Mohammed Ghaus Tomb after breakfast. Made of Sandstones, the tomb is a fine example of Mughal architecture with beautifully crafted lattice work all over. The complex housing this tomb also has another small tomb beside it for Tansen, the famous musician of Akbar’s court. The monument perched amidst the luxurious lawns and surrounded by greenery feels like a serene paradise in the chaotic town of Gwalior. This is more of an offbeat attraction and not much to see here. But if you are a photography enthusiast or someone who loves solitude, then this is the place for you.

  • No entry fee for the tomb. Photography is allowed. But try not to disturb the sanctity of the place.
  • The tomb is approx. 2 Kms away from the main town and comes on the way to the fort. You can easily get auto-rickshaws to and from this place.

Jai Vilas Palace Museum

After visting the tomb, head towards Jai Vilas Palace and Museum. The museum is the only part you can visit in the palace, but the chalk white regal palace with stunning Italian architecture and perfectly manicured lawns is a delightful sight in itself. The museum has multiple rooms and a guided tour through each of these rooms can easily take more than an hour.

There are several rooms inside the museum with an expansive collection of artefacts that provide an isight into the luxurious lifestyle of the royal family.  Most notable of all is the Darbar Hall with gold coating on the walls and ceiling and two massive chandeliers of 3.5 tons each.

  • Timings : 10.00 AM to 5:00 PM : Wednesday Closed
  • Entry Fee: INR 300 for Indians
  • Camera is not allowed inside the museum. But you can take pictures in mobile.
  • Also, no bags are allowed inside the museum. There are free lockers at the entry gate where you can keep your bags if carrying any.

After the palace and the tomb, come back to your hotel.  Freshen up and after a little rest and lunch, head to the Sun Temple. It is dedicated to Sun God and is inspired from the famous sun temple at Konark, Odisha. Made of sandstones, the temple is located amidst well maintained garden and has beautiful carvings. The temple is 5-6 kilometres from the city and needs maximum of an hour to visit. You can easily find cabs or autos for the visit.

Now since you are done with the attractions, it is time for some shopping. And Gwalior has a number of markets or bazaars to cater to different shopping needs. So select any of these bazaars to visit and pick a few items for yourself and your loved ones back home🙂

  • Bada and Naya Bazaar : Best place to buy native weaves such as Chanderi and Maheswari silk sarees. Also a good place to buy handicrafts or pick some paper mache products.
  • Topi Bazaar : A small market area famous for good quality leather products such as shoes, bags and purses.
  • Patankar Bazaar : Famous for lacquer ware, wall hangings and handmade carpets. You can also shop Chanderi sarees from the shops around here.

When you are done shopping, do not forget to try some MP famous kachori and jalebi in the local shops.

This wraps up the time in Gwalior. Later in the evening, catch train to Jabalpur.

2 days are enough to cover all the attractions in Gwalior. But if you want a relaxing trip (as we did), you can cover the same things in the span of 3 days instead of 2. This will just add another day to the itinerary.  Alternatively, you can follow the original 2 day itinerary to cover everything in Gwalior and then add another day to take a day trip to Morena. This historical district is around 45 kilometres from Gwalior and is home to some of the ancient temples rich in architecture.

Reach Jabalpur. Visit Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls. In the evening enjoy Narmada Aarti at Gwarighat.

Day 3 is dedicated to exploring Jabalpur. Jabalpur is the connecting city if you want to visit Bandhavgarh or Kanha National Park. But it also has some unique experiences to offer like boating through the marble rocks in Bhedaghat or moving in a ropeway over the magnificent Dhuandhar Falls.

Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls

So check into your hotel, freshen up and start for Dhuandhar Falls. The Fall is a bit away from the city and takes around 45 mins to reach by car. From the parking space, keep walking for 5 mins to reach near the falls. On the way back, take a ropeway ride to have amazing views of the river and the falls from up above.

After the falls, head to Bhedaghat Boating point which is approx. 2 kilometres away from the falls. Here you can take a boat ride in river Narmada passing through the beautiful marble rock canyons. Remember that “raat ka nasha abhi…” song from Bollywood movie Ashoka? It was shot in Bhedaghat. If you are going during full moon, do not miss the boat ride in the moonlight at the marble rocks. We have heard it feels magical. The boat ride lasts around 30-40 mins and is available both in sharing as well as reserve basis.

  • Exclusive Boat: INR 800
  • Sharing: INR 100 per person
  • Since both Dhuandhar Falls and Bhedaghat Boating Point are away from town and are close to each other, cover both the places at one go. It will save you time of commute as well as the cost. Both places are better visited during morning or late afternoon time when the sun is not too harsh. So plan accordingly.
  • We paid INR 1600 for a trip to and from Dhuandhar falls. But our hotel was a bit away from town and getting cabs were not very easy. So enquire the prices before booking the cab.
  • Avoid travelling to jabalpur between  June to October 15th  as Boating at Bhedaghat stays closed due to monsoon. Also, when the water level is high in monsoon, Dhuandhar falls is not visible and ropeway too gets closed sometimes.

Narmada Aarti at Gwarighat

In the evening, head to Gwarighat. Here you can enjoy boat ride in river Narmada in the vibrantly decorated boats. They take you to the other side to visit the Gurudwara and show you the different points. End the day watching Narmada Aarti that transforms the whole atmosphere with beautiful chants and huge multi-tiered lamps. This is a very unique experience not to be missed in Jabalpur and we totally recommend this when you are in the city. The aarti starts at 7pm and continues for half an hour.

It is not easy getting a cab from Gwarighat to the city. So either reserve a cab for your to and fro trip or take an auto rickshaw on the way back.

Drive to Bandhavgarh. Evening Safari.

It is time for the Jungle. After breakfast, start your drive to Bandhavgarh National park. The drive takes around 4 hours and is through the country side. Especially if you are going just after the monsoon, the whole stretch will be dotted with greenery, small streams and wild flowers.

Check into your resort.  Later in the day, you can either take an evening safari (starts at 3pm) or explore the area around your resort. Take long walks, enjoy the sunset or go spotting birds.

Morning Safari and Day at resort

Start your day with the Jungle Safari. The morning safari starts at 6am and can go upto 11am. If you book your safari (exclusive) through the hotel, the Gipsy will pick you up. From the entry gate of the forest, a guide will join you and then the adventure will begin. Passing through the narrow dirt roads of the lush forest and watching birds and animals in their natural habitat is unlike any other experience. If you are lucky, you may spot the elusive Tiger too. Apart from Tigers, Bandhavgarh is also home to many other animals  such as Sloth Bears, Sambar Deer, Nilgais, Chinkara and wild Boars. You can also spot many varieties of birds, butterflies and spiders too.

As the safari starts early, the resort packs the breakfast for guests. And having breakfast in the middle of the forest surrounded by towering trees feels exciting. Unfortunately, we did not see the Tiger that day. Yet we loved the drive through the forest crossing path with rivulets and listening to the sound of birds and insects while the cool morning breeze wafted against our skin. Also got to see a Sloth Bear from a very close distance completely engrossed in his breakfast🙂

  • Bandhavgarh has 2 areas – Core and Buffer area. Core area is where the sightings are good. But it stays closed from June 15 to September 30th. So plan your trip accordingly.
  • Book your accommodation in advance, especially between October to March. This is the time the park gets most of the tourists and even though there is no dearth of accommodation in Bandhavgarh, you may not get the preferred ones.
  • The luxury level accommodations usually include safari in their package. But if not, then you can either ask your accommodation to book the safaris for you or you can book it online from  MP Tourism website  (Use Book Now button on this page). Book in advance as only limited vehicles are allowed in each safari.
  • The booking page provides you option for exclusive (Full vehicle) or shared (Single seat) booking. Also, it allows to choose the zone. Make sure to select a core zone (Khitauli, Magadhi or Tala) while booking.
  • If you are taking only 1 safari, then we recommend taking an exclusive one instead of shared safari. This gives you more freedom and also the morning ride through the forest feels surreal. From what we have heard, tiger sighting is better in morning safari.
  • For exclusive safari in Buffer area, we paid  INR 5000 (Including Gipsy, forest guide and park fees) and this was in off season (September last week). This charge is a bit higher for safari in the core area. There is no differentiation in prices for Indian and Foreigners.
  • Carry a scarf and mask as the moving vehicles generate lot of dust.

You can spend the evening either exploring the nearby area or at leisure. Take small strolls around your resort and you may get to see a lot of birds and butterflies.  Some resorts even arrange cultural events in the evening.

Drive back to Jabalpur and catch flight back home

This is the day to return back home. We had a late afternoon flight from Jabalpur to Bangalore. So we started from Bandhavgarh at around 10:30am and had lunch in Jabalpur before boarding the flight. You need to plan accordingly keeping the 4hour drive time to Jabalpur and your flight timing in view.

From Jabalpur, you can book a cab for drop and pick up to/from Bandhavgarh. We booked it through our resort at Bandhavgarh and found the price reasonable. The charges were  INR 5000  each way.

Alternative Itineraries for Madhya Pradesh

Here are a few alternative itineraries for Madhya Pradesh for your reference. Choose any depending on your preference, mode of transport and available time.

  • Have 2 additional days? Then add Orchha to the original itinerary: Gwalior-Orchha-Jabalpur-Bandhavgarh (or Kanha National Park)
  • Not very keen on Jabalpur or Bandhavgarh? Then following itinerary works the best. It is also suitable for a road trip from Delhi: Gwalior-Orchha-Khajuraho-Panna National Park .

You can also check the suggested itineraries by the Govt of of Madhya Pradesh on MP Tourism site .

Reaching Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh has  5  airports  at  Gwalior, Bhopal, Indore, Khajuraho and Jabalpur. Some of the smaller airports like Gwalior and Jabalpur have limited flight connectivity with a handful of major cities.

There are also a number of  Railway stations  across the state. Major stations like Gwalior, Jabalpur, Indore etc. are well connected by trains to cities across India.

You can also opt for a  road trip  via car if you start from Delhi. Cities like Gwalior, Orchha etc are at driving distance and and are perfect entry point for the trip.

Getting around in Madhya Pradesh

In Gwalior and Jabalpur, for traveling within the city, auto rickshaws and app taxi like Ola are easily available.

For intercity travels , you can either use taxis, train or even flights depending on your budget and convenience. If you intend to travel by air, then keep in mind that these airports have hardly 1 flight operating per day from one city to another. So plan accordingly.

For intercity travel by Taxis, Ola Outstation and MakeMyTrip Cabs are two options. We did not use any local taxi services, so can not comment on that. Alternatively, you can always talk to your accommodation and they can help book a cab for you.

Accommodation in Madhya Pradesh

Gwalior has many options for stay including budget and mid range properties. For luxury, there are limited options in Gwalior, Taj Usha Kiran Palace being the top rated one. You can also check MPT Tansen Residency  which is a mid-range property managed by MP Tourism.

We stayed at Neemrana’s Deo Bagh which is a 17th century mid-range heritage property in the old part of the city. The hotel is tucked away amidst an oasis of greenery and feels like a different world once inside. The rooms are spacious, aesthetically decorated while keeping the old world charm intact. Here you can wake up to the sight of peafowls and enjoy your evenings sipping tea in the luxuriant lawn. The super delicious food at the restaurant is the cherry on the top. If you are more about experiences, then opt for a royal breakfast in Baradari which is a fascinating 17th century structure inside the resort. There are even a few ancient temples and cenotaphs in the resort compound accessible to guests.

So overall, this property is a peaceful haven for people looking for a leisurely getaway and we definitely recommend it. But it is a bit farther from the attractions and good restaurants. So if you are more about hopping attractions, we recommend choosing the accommodation in the main town area instead.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ava & Sush || Travel and Us (@theroamingshoes)

For Jabalpur accommodation, you have 2 options – Either stay in the main city or stay close to Bhedaghat. If you choose to stay in town, you will be close to restaurants, markets and will find commute easily. But be ready to spend more on to and fro trip to Dhuandhar Falls and Bhedaghat boating points as these are quite far (approx. 30 kms) from the town.

Alternatively, if your main intent of visiting Jabalpur is seeing Dhuandhar Falls and taking boat ride at Bhedaghat, then we recommend choosing an accommodation near Bhedaghat. There are limited options in the area with not many having great reviews. But you can always book in advance to reserve the preferred one. There is a hotel named MPT Marble Rocks near Bhedaghat that is managed by MP Government.

We chose to stay in Shawn Elizey which is a little outside the main city, but a bit closer to Bhedaghat. Made with European Architectural style, the hotel looks absolutely gorgeous and provides luxury in mid-range price. The rooms are spacious, tastefully done and lavish. The food is great and buffets are extensive with reasonable price.

Bandhavgarh National Park

If you are a luxury traveller, then Safari Lodges of Bandhavgarh are the perfect options. Samode Safari Lodge , Mahua Kothi by Taj , Treehouse Hideaway or Pugdandi safaris-Kings Lodge are a few names in the list. Apart from luxury resorts, there are many mid range properties in Bandhavgarh too though budget properties are hard to find.

We chose Aranyak Resort Bandhavgarh for our stay. The resort has lovely rustic cottages set amidst lush vegetation and exudes the feel of being amidst wilderness. You can spot many birds, butterflies and insects in the resort surrounding. The room equipped with a comfy four-poster bed, bamboo furnishings and an open shower feels absolutely inviting. Food is good and staff very helpful and friendly. So if you are looking for a mid-range property with abundant peace and warm hospitality, then this place is a perfect fit.

Packing for the trip to Madhya Pradesh

  • Pack a really good sunscreen. Even during September end, Sush got badly sunburnt(The guy does not like anything on his face, so can’t help🙂 )
  • Hat, Umbrella and Scarf (especially for the auto rides and the jungle safari)
  • Pack enough clothes if you are travelling anytime other than Winter. Clothes that you use once get really sweaty.
  • Choose comfortable clothing for the trip, especially cottons. Loose-fitting cotton dresses, shirts, kurtas and baggy pants help a lot in the hot and humid weather. Avoid shorts and revealing clothes since MP is quite reserved in that front.
  • If you travel in the winter months, especially to the forest, pack clothes in a way so that you can use in layers. The morning and evenings get really chilly in winter. So good sweaters, jackets and beanies are a must.

Other Pointers

  • Covid Related Restrictions: During our visit (September end), there was no RT-PCR report required to enter MP. But our accommodation had asked us if we were vaccinated. So talk to your resort/hotel before leaving if there is any such requirement.
  • Always ask and agree on the price before entering a cab (unless app based or prepaid) or auto-rickshaw. Otherwise you may end up paying more.

This is all about our trip to Madhya Pradesh. We have included every bit of information you may need to plan your trip. If you found this article helpful or have any queries on MP, do leave them in the comments below.

Best Madhya Pradesh Tour Packages in 2024

Madhya pradesh holiday tour package -  .

Called the Tiger State of India, Madhya Pradesh promises exciting experiences for travellers. Booking a Madhya Pradesh tour package is the best way to cover the unlimited wonders of the region. These include the Pench National Park which was the inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book and Orchha where Lord Rama receives a gun salute each day.

Madhya Pradesh is a unique fusion of history, natural beauty, wildlife, culture, spirituality and architectural marvels. There are several other tour packages that cover the Satpura Tiger Reserve, Jabalpur, Bhopal and UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Sanchi, Khajuraho and Bhimbetka. For those seeking spiritual solace, a 12 jyotirlinga or Mahakaleshwar Omkareshwar tour packages can be considered.

Best Time to Visit Madhya Pradesh

Visitors can book a Madhya Pradesh tour package for any season as per their preferences. However, most tourists prefer booking Madhya Pradesh packages in the winter season between October and March as the temperature is low and the weather is pleasant. Some also book Mahakaleshwar tour packages or 12 jyotirlinga tour packages during this period.

Many book Ujjain packages and packages for other parts of Madhya Pradesh in the monsoon (July to September). Temperatures remain relatively lower in this period, although they increase sharply between April and June.

How to Reach Madhya Pradesh

Those including flights in their Madhya Pradesh tour packages can choose from the airports in Bhopal and Indore. These are also options for Mahakaleshwar tour packages. Some other options include the airports at Gwalior, Khajuraho and Raipur. Those considering booking a Pench or Panna national park package should consider flying to the Jabalpur airport instead. It is also well-connected to Bandhavgarh, Satpura and Kanha.

Many travellers also choose train travel as a part of their Madhya Pradesh tour packages. The state is well-connected to places like Jaipur, Delhi, Agra, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ranthambore, Kolkata, Varanasi, Haridwar, Puri, Ahmedabad and Udaipur via trains. There are several railway stations in Madhya Pradesh, with notable ones including Ujjain, Chhindwara, Gwalior, Indore, Bhopal, Khajuraho, Katni, Satna, Jabalpur and many others. Both Khatia and Mukki gates have private hotels. Kanha National Park opens from October 1 to June 30 and remains closed in July, August and September. On Wednesday, evening safari is not available. In addition, the park also remains closed on the occasion of Holi in March.

There are basically three categories of jungle safari in Kanha –

Normal Safari – There are 6-seater Jeeps available in Kanha for jungle safari and only 2 canters (an open bus with 20 seats). The canter and jeep safaris are available in two shifts only. Kanha morning safari is usually longer and lasts till 11 AM, while Kanha evening safari is shorter and fewer jeeps are permitted.

Note – Jeeps are mainly booked on an exclusive basis in Kanha National Park. You can also book jeep safari on an individual seat basis. You have to go to the entry gate because jeeps won’t pick you up at the hotel. In case of individual passengers, if there are fewer than 6 passengers, the rest of the passengers will contribute the total cost of the safari.

Tatkal Safaris – These safaris can be booked in premium zones. There is no specific number of jeeps available in this category. In this quota, you can book only those jeeps which were cancelled. The tatkal quota opens at 5 PM for the next morning and afternoon. Keep in mind that the cost is a bit higher than advance booking or normal quota jeeps.

Premium Safaris – There is no concept of half-day safari in Kanha. The national park offers only full-day safaris in the premium category. You can explore all zones in this category but it is a bit costly. You also need to contact the Field Director for special permission.

Jeep safari in Kanha is available from October 16 to June 30. The park remains closed for tourists during monsoons.

Bonza budget airline in administration as flights across the country cancelled

People board plane on tarmac

Embattled regional airline Bonza has gone into administration after cancelling flights across the country on Tuesday and stranding potentially thousands of passengers.

Documents filed with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) reveal Bonza Aviation Pty Ltd was at 3.25pm declared "externally administered", with accounting and advisory firm Hall Chadwick appointed to the role.

In a media release on Tuesday afternoon, Hall Chadwick confirmed Bonza's fleet would be grounded until Thursday, May 2.

Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar have offered complimentary seats, where available, on their flights to passengers stranded mid-journey on Tuesday.

Bonza chief executive Tim Jordan released a statement on Tuesday morning saying all services would be "temporarily suspended" while discussions were held about the ongoing viability of the business.

The airline has not responded to requests for comment, but has published a statement on its website and app apologising to affected customers.

"We’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian domestic aviation market," the statement reads.

Early Bonza flights in and out of its base on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, along with Melbourne legs to Rockhampton, Gladstone and Tamworth, were all cancelled on Tuesday morning.

Three Bonza planes were parked on the tarmac at Sunshine Coast Airport on Tuesday, including a Boeing 737-MAX aircraft named Bruce, which had been leased from Canadian low-cost airline Flair to fly in Australia.

Bonza's financial position has been the subject of intense speculation since its first flight early last year.

"The discussions regarding ongoing trading are occurring over the forthcoming days and the administrators will be in a position to update all stakeholders as the matter progresses," Hall Chadwick said.

Passengers stranded

Rona Wall caught a shuttle bus to the Sunshine Coast airport early on Tuesday morning hoping to catch a flight to Rockhampton, after her scheduled Bonza flight from the Gold Coast was cancelled on Monday.

She said she received multiple correspondences from Bonza about a rescheduled flight, which created a lot of confusion.

"I've got a text message that was in my younger daughter's name, and an email, and also [a message] on the app," Ms Wall said.

"All three notifications were for three different flights."

Nicole Morris was due to fly from Melbourne to Rockhampton on Tuesday with Bonza but was told her flight had been cancelled when she arrived at the airport.

"It's crap, I don't know what I'm meant to do," Ms Morris said.

"I've come in and I can't find anyone to talk to — there's nobody here."

Bonza said affected passengers had been told they would receive a full refund.

The federal Transport Department has set up a hotline for stranded passengers on the number 1800 069 244, which will operate until 10pm.

'They were told Bonza has finished'

A Sunshine Coast man whose wife works for the airline told the ABC about 20 cabin crew were called into a meeting early on Tuesday morning.

"There were two crews there — they were just basically told that Bonza has finished," he said.

"They've been told that they're not flying until further notice.

"They've all been told that the bottom line is that Bonza will no longer be flying."

He said the news was a blow for staff and the region.

"They're pretty devastated. It's their job. She's been in it from day one. It's a bit of a blow for Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast," he said.

History of cancellations

After months of delay, Bonza was given the go-ahead to start flying regional routes from the Sunshine Coast in January last year.

It was the first new local airline since Tiger Airways launched 15 years earlier, and its business model aimed to link regional centres often ignored by the larger carriers.

The company launched a base in Melbourne two months later.

Since launching, Bonza has faced criticism for cancelling flights, including mass cancellations over Christmas , and suspending routes .

A spokeswoman for Bonza last week, when the company cut services from the Gold Coast,  said it was working on improving customer service due to passenger complaints.

'Devastating' for regional tourism

Bundaberg Tourism chief executive Katherine Reid said the news was devastating.

"We believe that the Melbourne to Bundaberg route has been one of the strongest performing in the state for Bonza, sitting at an average of 90 per cent capacity," she said.

Ms Reid said that equated to as many as 400 people a week coming from Victoria into the Wide Bay region.

"We know a lot of people have had holidays booked," she said.

"We need to continue working with all levels of government to really attract airline partners into regional areas."

Call for bailout

Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce said he hoped the airline could "see their way out of" the situation but said the federal government could be doing more to help.

He wanted the government to consider a bailout package.

"Certainly consider it ... on the premise of a better market outcome for all passengers not just helping out one company," he said.

Close up of Robbie Katter

North West Queensland MP Robbie Katter said Bonza's struggles were a symptom of a bigger issue in the industry.

"It's disappointing because we need this competition," the Traegar MP said.

"The bigger guys will always make it as difficult as possible for airlines to enter the market and destroy the dominance they've got.

"I'll plan to push the government to underwrite these funds so that bush residents aren't left worse off."

'Burning money'

Aviation analyst Geoffrey Thomas, the editor-in-chief of the website Airline Ratings, said he understood the airline's backers, 777 partners, had made changes to the leasing and financing of its aircraft.

He said the budget carrier may have been caught off guard.

777 Partners has been contacted for comment.

a man in a suit smiles at camera

"It's shattering news, particularly for those affected who hold tickets and were going to fly today or tomorrow," Mr Thomas said.

"I think that the problem of Bonza is overseas, with leasing companies, and not the local management, not the business model."

But he said the low profit margin model could be tough in regional Australia, given long distances and relatively low passenger numbers.

"If you need 85 per cent capacity and you only get 70 per cent … then you're burning money," he said.

What IHCL’s 4th Hotel in Varanasi Says About India’s Religious Tourism Boom

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

May 3rd, 2024 at 8:18 AM EDT

Religious tourism is booming in India and hospitality companies are now catching up to cater to this demand.

Bulbul Dhawan

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) announced the signing of a fourth hotel in Varanasi, a 101-key Ginger hotel. It currently has two Taj Hotels and a SeleQtions hotel (as part of the Tree of Life conversion) in Varanasi, a city with deep cultural and religious significance.

On Thursday, IHCL also announced the signing of its reimagined Gateway brand in Sarnath further strengthening the hotel company’s spiritual tourism circuit.

With these two additions, IHCL will have 24 properties in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, of which 11 are under development.

Once popular for being home to the Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh is now looking to build itself as a religious tourism hub through cities like Prayagraj, Kashi, Ayodhaya, Varanasi and Sarnath.

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched about 500 projects with an investment of more than INR 850 billion ($10.2 billion) to develop religious and spiritual tourism spots.

Impact of Religious Tourism

The tourism industry in Uttar Pradesh has been transformed after the inauguration of the Kashi-Vishwanath corridor in Varanasi in December 2021, according to state tourism deputy director Preeti Srivastava said.

“After that, in 2022 and 2023, a total of more than 130 million tourists visited the pilgrim city. The success from this project was also implemented in other parts of the country, including Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.”

She added that with Ayodhya now being developed as a religious destination, and Mathura next in line the tourism prospects of Uttar Pradesh are set to bolster.

Booking.com while noting the Holi and Easter Holiday trends in March had also noted that spiritual destinations were among the most-searched .

In January, the public opening of a controversial Hindu temple in Ayodhya saw half a million visitors on the first day.

On December 31, Oyo Group CEO Ritesh Agarwal had tweeted, “80% more users are searching for stays in Ayodhya today! Seeing one of the highest spikes.”

Na hills, na beaches!  80% more users are searching for stays in Ayodhya today! Seeing one of the highest spikes 👀  #CheckIn2024 — Ritesh Agarwal (@riteshagar) December 31, 2023

“If a destination like Varanasi, Ayodhya, or Mathura is developed, the tourists that visit will then spill over to other regions. Since these are one or at most two-day destinations, tourists then prefer to club more cities in Uttar Pradesh together. There are many tourists who come to Lucknow, which allows them to explore the Mughal heritage. They then go to Ayodhya, Prayagraj, and Varanasi,” she said, adding that tourists also visit smaller destinations along the way.

Entry of Hospitality Brands

Expecting its annual tourist footfall to reach 850 million by 2028, the state is seeking to create a robust hotel supply chain, paving the way for the entry of major hospitality brands.

Accordingly it is eyeing investments to the tune of INR 320 billion ($3.8 billion) in the hospitality sector to cater to the expected increase in demand. The focus is on tourism hotspots of Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Agra.

Last year, Japanese hotel chain Hotel Management International (HMI) signed an agreement to develop 30 new hotels in the state. These will be located in Agra, Varanasi and Ayodhya.

HMI public relations director Takamoto Yokoyama said, “Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to realize and develop the tourism potential have created immense possibilities for the hotel industry. Varanasi has seen a significant increase in tourism after the development of the Kashi-Vishwanath corridor. For us, this is a great chance.”

Some recent key developments in the spiritual destinations in Uttar Pradesh include:

  • Wyndham Hotels and Resorts opened a Ramada Plaza in Varanasi last year
  • ITC Hotels signed boutique hotel Storii Prayagraj in May 2023
  • IHCL and Radisson Hotels Group have expressed interest in opening five-star hotels in Prayagraj
  • Hilton Opened DoubleTree by Hilton in Varanasi in September 2023

The Ayodhya Effect

Currently, this boom is led by hotel development in Ayodhya, which was revamped recently in the run-up to the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple held in January .

The town could attract over 50 million tourists annually, according to a report by brokerage firm Jeffries.

In January, Radisson opened its Park Inn by Radisson in the city. In an interview with Skift , Radisson Hotel Group executive vice president Elie Younes said that religious cities in India are a focal point. Another Radisson hotel is coming up in Ayodhya, while it has one under development in Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh.

Last year, IHCL signed two hotels in Ayodhya under the Ginger and Vivanta brands. The company signed its third hotel at the destination this year, under the IHCL SeleQtions brand, and is planning a fourth property under the Taj brand.

Apart from this:

  • Domestic hospitality company Lemon Tree Hotel is also planning a 200-key property in Ayodhya
  • Online travel company EaseMyTrip also entered the hospitality industry with a hotel in the holy city
  • Wyndham has signed a Ramada Encore hotel in Ayodhya
  • Hilton is also looking at Ayodhya as it ramps up signings in India.
