WTA Tour Finals 2021 preview: everything you need to know

The WTA’s crown-jewel event returns for the first time since 2019 with some of the biggest names in women’s tennis set to feature in Guadalajara, Mexico. Find the schedule, players to watch and more, right here.

Aryna Sabalenka US Open

After a sensational year of women’s tennis , the 2021 WTA Finals are back.

The season-ending championships, which feature the top eight singles players and doubles teams from 2021, will take place from November 10 to November 17 at the Panamerican Tennis Center in Guadalajara .

Mexico will host the tournament sometimes dubbed the ‘Fifth Slam’ in a one-time only event after travel restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic meant the competition could not take place in its usual home of Shenzhen in China .

As we head for the final showdown here are the top things you need to know.

Anett Kontaveit

WTA Tour Finals 2021: players to watch

The following eight players will compete in the singles side of the competition:

  • Aryna Sabalenka
  • Karolina Pliskova
  • Barbora Krejcikova
  • Iga Swiatek
  • Maria Sakkari
  • Garbine Muguruza
  • Paula Badosa
  • Anett Kontaveit

Storylines at WTA Tour Finals 2021

Whatever way the WTA Finals unfold it is for certain that in the singles competition there will be a new champion.

World number one Barty made the decision in late October not to defend her WTA Finals crown in Guadalajara.

After returning to her native Australia following the US Open, the 2021 Wimbledon winner said she was unwilling to compromise on her preparations for the Australian Open with her country's ongoing quarantine requirements.

Who then is primed to take her crown?

It is certainly hard to ignore the hottest player on tour right now: Anett Kontaveit .

The Estonian stunned everyone when she snatched the final top-eight place from the hands of Ons Jabeur after she defeated home favourite Simona Halep at the Transylvania Open (October 31). Her victory at Cluj-Napoca capped a remarkable end-of-season run that has seen her win 26 of her last 28 matches.

Somewhat ironically the 25-year-old’s blistering form was triggered by a five-match losing streak with her last defeat handed to her by Jabeur in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters .

As the only player to feature in the singles and doubles competition Barbora Krejcikova is also another star to keep an eye on.

The Czech started 2021 ranked 65 but after clinching her maiden Grand Slam at Roland Garros , and then weeks later striking gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the women’s doubles event, the 25-year-old is coming to Mexico hot.

Her 2021 win-loss record is sitting at a favourable 45-14.

With no defending duo either in the doubles event the door is as equally open for a new pair of WTA Finals champions, and several competitors from 2019 will be back seeking vengeance.

2019 runner-up Hseih Su-Wei will be hoping for more luck in this year’s edition with new partner Elise Mertens (who got only as far as the round robin stage last time). The Belgian is currently ranked number one in the world for women's doubles.

Five-time Olympian Samantha Stosur and Chinese number one Zhang Shuai will also be on the hunt for redemption after the duo got as far as the semi-finals last time. Their consecutive appearance as a team was helped by a late surge that saw them take the 2021 US Open women’s doubles crown.

WTA Tour Finals 2021: Schedule & Format

Both the singles and doubles competition will feature eight players and teams in a round robin event.

Eight are halved into two groups of four and every player/team will compete against the three others in their group.

The top two from each group will then advance to the semi-finals. The top placed player/team from the first group will play the runner-up from the second and vice versa.

The winners of each semi-final will then meet in the championship final.

Those in the singles event will be vying to lift the WTA Finals Billie Jean King Trophy. Meanwhile in the doubles, the WTA Finals Martina Navratilova Trophy will be the silverware up for grabs.

The WTA Finals will feature two sessions a day with one during the day and another scheduled for night . The round robin matches will conclude on November 15. The semi-finals are penned for November 16 and the championship matches November 17 .

Wednesday November 10

  • Day Session 14:00 - singles round robin followed by doubles round robin

Wta rouen day 2 predictions including caroline garcia vs elisabetta cocciaretto.

  • April 15, 2024
  • Jordan Reynolds

Caroline Garcia in action ahead of the WTA Rouen Open.

An entertaining opening day of the WTA Rouen Open included an impressive comeback victory for 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens. There are eight matches scheduled on the second day, with home hero Caroline Garcia one of those in action. We at LWOT predict the other day 2 matches in Rouen in a separate article, including Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs Alice Robbe . But which two players do you think will win?

WTA Rouen Day 2 Predictions

Fiona ferro vs elina avanesyan.

Head-to-head: Avanesyan 1-0 Ferro

Clay is #144 ranked Fiona Ferro’s favourite surface. If she is going to break into the top 100, a strong run on the dirt is her best chance to do it. Unfortunately, this is not a good draw for the Frenchwoman. Avanesyan plays her best tennis on clay, although she has had some good results on hard courts this season as well. All 12 of her finals at ITF level have come on the surface. Ferro is fun to watch and there will undoubtedly be some good rallies in this match. But Avanesyan is likely to have too much at the WTA Rouen Open.

Prediction: Avanesyan in 2

Arantxa Rus vs Robin Montgomery

Head-to-head: first meeting

Rus suffered a brutal loss in her first clay court match of the season in Charleston. She lost the longest contest of the year so far to Katie Volynets in a final-set tiebreak, despite leading it 6-4. However, this is a great opportunity to put that setback behind her. Montgomery possesses some firepower that can be dangerous. But her playing style is most naturally suited to hard courts, with clay being her weakest surface. If Rus stays consistent, she should get her first WTA victory on clay this year.

Prediction: Rus in 2

Clara Burel vs Katarina Zavatska

Clara Burel usually plays her best tennis on clay, although she did suffer a disappointing loss to Katie Boulter at the Billie Jean King Cup last week on the surface. Katarina Zavatska is much lower ranked than her opponent but she too is a clay-court specialist. If the Ukrainian’s formidable forehand finds its range, this could be a close battle. Burel’s consistency may just edge it at the WTA Rouen Open, but expect the sets to be close.

Prediction: Burel in 3

Caroline Garcia vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto

Head-to-head: Garcia 3-1 Cocciaretto

Hopefully, Caroline Garcia is fully fit for this match. She seemed to be having some slight trouble with her shoulder during a loss to Emma Raducanu at the Billie Jean King Cup last week. Garcia did not play badly in that contest, simply being undone by an outstanding performance by the Briton. Elisabetta Cocciaretto plays her best tennis on clay and is a gritty, stubborn opponent. This is likely to come down to whether Garcia’s powerful serve and groundstrokes find their range. If they do, the Italian will get find it hard to cope at the WTA Rouen Open.

Prediction: Garcia in 2

Emma Raducanu set for stunning rankings rise after impressive win against Angelique Kerber

Emma Raducanu impressive on clay in Stuttgart

Emma Raducanu’s encouraging surge in form continued as she beat three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber in the first round of the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart – with the win securing her an instant rankings boost.

Fresh from helping Great Britain reach the finals of the Billie Jean Cup at the weekend, Raducanu continued her promising form on clay by breezing past the home favourite.

Both Raducanu and Kerber were playing as wild cards in Stuttgart, with the Briton tumbling down the rankings after time out to undergo three surgeries.

Meanwhile, former world number one Kerber only recently returned from 18 months out on maternity leave.

Raducanu got off to a flying start by breaking Kerber in the opening game and despite an immediate response from the German, the 2021 US Open champion took control and claimed the first set in 41 minutes.

Kerber was broken again at the start of the second set and although she managed to haul back level, Raducanu stepped up a gear and shrugged off a brief visit from the trainer to wrap up an emphatic win.

“It was very difficult to play Angie because she has so much history behind her,” said Raducanu. “You are not just playing Angelique Kerber, you are playing the person who has achieved all those amazing results.

“It wasn’t the prettiest but I just focused on the next point and did not get too bogged down. So I’m happy to have got through that.

“I am playing some really good tennis. I feel like I’m a lot more dominant in my service games. I feel like I’m playing really well. I think everyone that I was practicing with can attest to that too.

“Yeah, it is, I think it’s a combination of doing actual good practice weeks, doing the right things. I’m really enjoying working with Nick, my coach.

“It’s great to have a familiar face, but I also think we’re just working really well together as a team.

“I think my serve is more of a weapon now. I think the last weekend I played some great tennis. Obviously it wasn’t a lot of much time to turn over since last weekend.

“Yeah, going back up again tomorrow, it’s more just a challenge of the body, but I think I’m mentally in a good place.

“I’m taking a lot of confidence from the training I’m doing.”

Perfect Start 👍👍 @EmmaRaducanu looking very sharp, defeating Kerber to set up a R2 encounter against Noskova! #PorscheTennis pic.twitter.com/avIcmN55qG — wta (@WTA) April 17, 2024

Raducanu was always likely to take time to find her feet on the WTA Tour after her 2023 season ended after this event in Stuttgart a year ago.

Her ranking dropped outside of the top 300 as virtually all the points she had collected dropped off her record, but she is finding form heading into a hectic few weeks of the season.

Many critics have suggested Raducanu should be playing lower-level events in a bid to get match wins and build some momentum after her time away from the game.

Yet her determination to compete with the biggest names in the game ensures she has a chance to make a quick leap back up the WTA Rankings and this single win in Stuttgart saw her climb a stunning 51 places in the live rankings.

If she was playing WTA 250 events or even tournaments on the second tier ITF World Tennis Tour, Raducanu would make a much slower rise up the rankings.

Now she has a chance to get back into the top 100 of the rankings in double quick time, with a win against Czech teenager Linda Nodkova in her next match likely to fire her up to around No 220 in the live rankings.

Raducanu’s current form would challenge players at the top end of the women’s game and if she can avoid injury setbacks, her impressive form on clay could allow her to enjoy rapid rises up the rankings as she has no points to defend for the rest of 2024.

Did Venus Williams Forfeit Tennis Match Because She Refused To Play Against Trans Athlete?

The claim former no. 1-ranked tennis ace williams received a "standing ovation" for refusing to play a trans woman has circulated on social media., nikki dobrin, published april 17, 2024.

Labeled Satire

About this rating

In late 2023, the claim emerged on social media platforms Facebook , Instagram and TikTok that Grand Slam tennis champion Venus Williams refused a match against a transgender player, sparking controversy and debate.

For example, in October 2023, the rumor was posted to the Facebook account America - Love It Or Leave It , along with the headline, "Venus Williams Gets a Standing Ovation for Refusing to Play a Trans Woman," where it received 61,000 "Likes" at the time of writing, garnering significant attention and engagement, with users mostly expressing support for the narrative.

In April 2024, the rumor resurfaced, fueling speculation about Williams' stance on transgender athletes in sports .

wta tour.com

( America - Love It Or Leave It  / Facebook)

Interestingly, in the Facebook post, the alleged quote, "I'm not playing a guy," was attributed to actor and noted conservative Scott Baio rather than to Williams. A search of the content subscription service OnlyFans, which was named as the source of the quote, failed to bring up a page belonging to Baio.

Moreover, several commenters were quick to point out that the Williams sister pictured in the post was not Venus, but rather, her younger sister, former No 1.-ranked player Serena Williams. For instance, one response on Instagram read, "First that's Serena! And good for her why should she play a man," while another responded, "Isn't this pic of Serena Williams?!?"

Examining the "About" section of the above Facebook page revealed it to be a self-described "Satire/Parody" account that shared the same contact details as Conservative Tears , a satire website from where the claim apparently originated.

Conservative Tears had published the story in greater detail, asserting that Williams received a "standing ovation" for forfeiting a match against a trans woman from France, Joe "Josepheena" LaBarron. According to Conservative Tears, Williams said of her refusal to play against LaBarron:

"I'm not trying to be the next Billie Jean King," she said, "I'll play any man for charity or for fun, but this is my livelihood." Venus says she's never lost a competition to a man because she's never played one before and doesn't intend to start now.

However, no other details were given as part of this story, including where the alleged tennis match was to have taken place and if it was part of any big-name tournament. The reference to King, widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, is likely due to her famous 1973 " Battle of the Sexes " exhibition match, in which she defeated former No. 1-ranked men's tennis player Bobby Riggs.

A search of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) database failed to unearth any player with the name Joe "Josepheena" LaBarron, as did a Google reverse image search using the photo of the player posted with the story.

Toward the end of the post from Conservative Tears, the writer revealed the absurdity of the story by referring to "sportsball analyzer" Tara Newhole , who shares the same name as a well-known drag performer, and who points out that the alleged trans tennis player in the photo isn't LaBarron, but rather, a professional tennis player named "Amelie Muresmo, a biological female with some masculine features who retired in 2009."

Indeed, the WTA website confirmed that  Amélie Mauresmo , the alleged transgender athlete pictured in the post, is a retired professional tennis player from France who was ranked No. 1 in 2004. Mauresmo is a biological woman, and the photo that was used as part of this satirical story can be found on her Wikipedia page.

According to the "About Us" section on the Conservative Tears website, the platform is part of a "network of parody, satire, and tomfoolery," indicating that the story claiming Williams refused to play against a transgender tennis player was fictitious and lacked any basis in reality or factual events.

Williams, 43, is presently ranked 447 in the world , following her career-high ranking of No. 1 in 2002, according to the WTA website. She is the older sister of retired player Serena Williams , who won an impressive 73 singles titles during her career.

Snopes has previously written about the Williams sisters, including Serena allegedly writing a message on social media about being sick of COVID-19 , and a billionaire offering $1 billion to "breed" NBA star Lebron James with Serena .
