Le Ren, one of the signees of the 'Fix The Tix' letter

Billie Eilish, Green Day and Cyndi Lauper, as well as Canadian artists Blue Rodeo, The Sadies and Le Ren, are amongst the signees of a new letter in support of the Fans First Act, which would ban fake tickets and mandate clearer ticket pricing.

Major artists are speaking out about the state of concert ticketing.

"The current system is broken," reads a new letter signed by over 250 artists, including Billie Eilish, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Cyndi Lauper, Lorde and more. The letter, dubbed "Fix The Tix," addresses pervasive issues in the ticketing industry, like fake tickets, misleading marketing strategies and unclear pricing.

Addressed to Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz, the respective Chair and Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation, the letter calls on the legislators to support the Fans First Act. The Act would take a series of steps to make ticketing more transparent for consumers, including banning "deceptive marketing tactics," which lure fans into "paying more for tickets that may never get them into a show."

"Predatory resellers have gone unregulated while siphoning money from the live entertainment ecosystem for their sole benefit," the letter reads. "As artists and members of the music community, we rely on touring for our livelihood, and we value music fans above all else. We are joining together to say that the current system is broken."

Though the letter addresses American lawmakers, ticket resale practices are not limited to the U.S., and several Canadian acts have signed in support of letter's aims, including Blue Rodeo, The Sadies, Cowboy Junkies, Suzie Ungerleider and Alvvays' Alec O'Hanley.

"Marking tickets up is indicative of yet another layer in a broken system," Canadian singer-songwriter Lauren Spear, who releases music as Le Ren and signed on to the letter, tells Billboard Canada . "It's hard enough making money with streaming services taking revenue away from artists. Markups create an invisible hand that both gatekeeps the audience and pockets money that should be going to the labour of the musicians and crew."

Problematic ticketing practices

Concert tickets have become a major news story in the last several years, with frustrated fans struggling to acquire tickets to their see their favourite artists. Ticketmaster has been a primary focus of consumer and artist ire, with Taylor Swift fans suing the ticketing giant after facing exorbitant prices and technical difficulties when trying to get Eras Tour tickets . “Ticketmaster is a monopoly that is only interested in taking every dollar it can from a captive public,” one lawsuit — later dropped — alleged .

Reportedly, the U.S. Department of Justice is now planning to sue Live Nation , which merged with Ticketmaster in 2010, for violating federal antitrust laws. The lawsuit is expected to land in the coming weeks.

The Fix The Tix letter doesn't mention Ticketmaster, and is instead focused on "predatory resellers," who purchase tickets at source and resell them at much higher price points. The letter claims such resellers also use "deceitful advertising," designed to hide that the tickets are re-sale and not face-value purchases, and decries the practice of "speculative tickets" — selling tickets that the seller doesn't actually have, which can result in fans getting turned away from shows.

"No one cares more about fans than the artists," the letter says. "When predatory resellers scoop up face-value tickets ahead of fans in order to resell at inflated prices on the secondary market, artists lose the ability to connect with their fans who cannot afford to attend."

The Fans First Act would also require ticket sellers to display the full price of a ticket from the outset of a purchase, tackling hidden fees that often catch consumers by surprise at the end of a transaction.

Nicki Minaj has set the tone in music, fashion, and beauty for more than a decade – making history and building her superstar personal brand along the way.

Minaj became “the first Woman to score 100 Billboard Hot 100 Hits” with an astounding 133 total entries to date (the most among female hip-hop acts). These include three #1’s, over 70 Top 40 hits (also a record among female hip-hop acts), and 23 Top 10’s (another record among female hip-hop acts). As a songwriter, she also holds the record for the “Most Billboard Hot 100 Entries Among Women in the 2010s.”

Her seminal “Super Bass” surpassed 1 billion YouTube views, entering rarified air alongside the likes of “Anaconda.” As such, she has emerged as “the first female rapper to cross the 1 billion-mark with multiple solo tracks.” With nine videos north of 1 billion views thus far, she has earned “the most videos with over 1 billion views for any female artist.”

Her ascendancy can be traced back to her landmark debut Pink Friday in 2010. It notably sold over 375,000 copies in its first week, according to MRC Data. Right out of the gate, it made history by achieving “the largest sales week for a female hip-hop artist since Lauryn Hill in 1998.”

In addition to music, Minaj has made numerous TV and film appearances, including as a judge on “American Idol” along with film roles in 2014’s "The Other Woman" alongside Kate Upton, Cameron Diaz, and Leslie Mann and 2016’s “Barbershop: The Next Cut.” She’s also done voiceover for "Ice Age: Continental Drift." What’s more, she has landed high-profile deals with Fendi, Adidas, H&M, Diesel, Mercedes-Benz, Sprint and Pepsi, released a nail polish collection with OPI and was the face of MAC’s Viva Glam campaign. Her branded lipstick, according to Racked, was the brand's highest-selling Viva Glam lipstick of all-time. Not to mention, she is a co-owner of TIDAL, and her BEATS 1 QUEEN radio show stands out as “the highest-rated show in Apple Music history.”

Minaj has only accelerated her unprecedented history-making momentum in the 2020’s. 2021 saw Beam Me Up Scotty blast to the top of the charts as “the highest-debuting female rap mixtape in Billboard 200 history.” Not to mention, “Super Bass” leveled up as her first RIAA diamond-certified single. During 2022, “Super Freaky Girl” impressively debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, popping off as “the first solo song by a female rapper to bow at #1 on the Hot 100 this century.” Among other firsts, she took flight as “the female rapper with the most solo Top 10 albums in Billboard 200 history,” “the most-awarded rapper at the American Music Awards,” and “the first female rapper with over 30 billion Spotify streams across her catalog.” Everything turns pink again with the 2023 release of her anxiously awaited Pink Friday 2 and more to come from Nicki Minaj.

R&B legend Monica will be joining rap icon Nicki Minaj as a special guest on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour.

Monica announced the news while on The Jennifer Hudson Show  on Thursday morning (Feb. 8).

She will appear on the North American leg, which begins March 1 in Oakland, California. From there, Mo’ and Nicki will travel to Las Vegas, New Orleans, Atlanta, New York, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, before concluding May 13 in Oklahoma City.

“The GAG is, You have no idea what you’re in store for!!! I’m honored to be a part of History being made!!!” Monica wrote in a social media post .

Monica, along with Keyshia Cole, recently teamed with Minaj on her song “ Love Me Enough ” from her  Pink Friday 2 (Gag City Deluxe) album.

Monica

Given that Monica will be on the road with Minaj, there’s a possibility that she will join Minaj on stage to perform the self-love anthem.

There’s no question that Monica will perform some of her biggest hits and fan favorites on tour. She could also perform material from her oft-delayed album, Trenches , which is now expected to arrive later this year.

The upcoming album will include the Neptunes-produced title track featuring Lil Baby, “ Friends ” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and the latest single, “ Letters .” The latter song, co-written by Ciara , debuted at No. 11 on Billboard’s R&B Digital Song Sales chart.

Monica not only has an R&B album coming but also a highly-anticipated country project,  Open Roads , executive produced by Brandi Carlile. It’s also slated to arrive this year.

Music and concerts | review: nicki minaj’s pink friday concert ran hot and cold at the united center.

Superstar rapper Nicki Minaj performs the first of two nights at the United Center in Chicago on her Pink Friday 2 tour on April 24, 2024. (Bob Gendron)

No, Nicki Minaj did not hurl any objects at the crowd Wednesday at the first of a sold-out two-night stand at the United Center. The feisty rapper, who made national news for forcefully throwing a bracelet back in the direction of a fan who chucked it at her head at a Sunday concert in Detroit, wisely limited her quarterback practice to tossing free T-shirts to enthusiastic admirers.

Apart from ice-cold stares and hard scans that accompanied some of her aggressive material, Minaj appeared to be in a jovial mood for most of the 140-minute event. The Queen of Rap cycled through multiple personas, organized mini-sets around loose themes and, by and large, demonstrated that her skills as a rapper still rank among the top echelon. Her aptitude as a balladeer and sense of pacing failed to match that elevated standard. Woefully so.

Accompanied by a drummer and keyboardist, Minaj performed the bulk of the show with a dance ensemble that added to the visual bling. A three-tier stage with a tall multi-screen backdrop, catwalk and dizzying array of lights matched the glam of the outfits seen throughout the audience. Dry-ice fog, fireballs, sparks, lasers and numerous props accentuated an atmosphere that suggested a cross between bougie nightclub and theme park attraction.

Or, in Minaj’s eyes, Gag City — the alternate moniker for her current Pink Friday 2 tour. The name comes from the LGBTQ+ term “gag,” which means to be awestruck. Her costumes alone gave such an impression. Metallic breastplate, formal gown, revealing bodysuit, cheerleader apparel, pink dress, robe, hooded jacket: Paired with various wigs and high-heeled boots, Minaj wore them all with sass and style.

Of course, changing into all those clothes required time and transitions. Though brief interludes are customary at arena and stadium shows, the four video-based breaks that allowed Minaj opportunities to strut her around as a fashion icon felt overly protracted. For the first half of the concert, anyway, Minaj’s engaging flow and slippery phrasing defeated those obstacles.

She kept rescuing the momentum that built from the outset on “I’m the Best.” The opening autobiographical declaration contained a blend of brashness, boldness and hubris that infused the songs Minaj sounded the most persuasive presenting — and epitomized the take-on-all-comers identity the rapper most naturally adopted. The very approach that transformed her into an international phenomenon.

During the past 15 years, few artists have dominated popular culture and influenced trends like Minaj. The Trinidadian native’s commercial feats encompass multiple firsts and reported global sales of more than 100 million units (singles, albums and features). Recognizing that her name often translates into automatic success, plenty of famous artists — Drake, Doja Cat, Post Malone, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Lil Wayne, Ye, Madonna and Elton John among them — have sought out Minaj for collaborations.

Often one of the only women in a field crowded with men, she has won or been nominated for nearly every type of major music award imaginable. Minaj belongs to an exclusive club of musicians who count eight videos that have been streamed more than one billion times each. In addition to television and film appearances, her branding reach extends to an entrepreneurial portfolio with fragrances, snacks, clothing and accessories.

The 41-year-old rapper also maintains a robust social media presence — Minaj boasts a staggering 229 million followers on Instagram — that helps account for her ability to stay relevant amid a pop landscape that changes by the day. As does her outspokenness, which includes highly publicized feuds with hip hop contemporaries.

“You either love me or (expletive) hate me, right?” Minaj asked Wednesday, drawing attention to her polarizing reputation and hinting at the bad-girl guise she seemingly loves to embrace. Physically, Minaj used body language to project toughness, infallibility and royalty. Sonically, the rapper unloaded on enemies and wannabes with diss tracks (“FTCU,” “Beep Beep”), torrents of clever one-liners (“Barbie Dangerous,” “Big Difference”) and battle-ready braggadocio (“Win Again”).

Minaj’s forceful tones, animated deliveries and alter-ego accents translated her intent as well as the meaning of the words. Her control — she seamlessly shifted from patient, slow elocution to rapid-fire clips in a blink, machine-gunning syllables in manners that created their own rhythms — backed up her talk. The technique compensated for the fact she seldom played songs in their entirety. Covering up for an over-reliance on backing tracks proved more difficult.

However determined to stake out her territory, Minaj also indulged in risque fun and conveyed it with a wink. She struck suggestive poses on the synth-heavy “Pink Birthday.” Male members of her dance team sported cowboy hats and holster belts for the sexual “Cowgirl.” Minaj leaned on recognizable samples from Rick James and Sir Mix-a-Lot hits, respectively, to send up the exaggerated raunch of “Super Freaky Girl” and “Anaconda.”

And she shared the spotlight and provided a surprise by duetting with Chicago rapper G Herbo on “Chi-Raq.” Not to be outdone, the local singer-songwriter joined Minaj on “Favorite” and “Want Some More” — the first time the pair performed those songs together on stage. Further impact, slam and sneer arrived with the warrior-minded “Chun-Li,” trap-laden “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” and tribal pound of “Monster.” If Minaj would have only retained that sharp focus and attack.

Instead, she morphed into a singer during a solo stretch that attempted emotional vulnerability but landed on formula and blandness. “Right Thru Me” and “Save Me” came across as anonymous pop lacking grit and charisma. Abbreviated renditions of “Here I Am” and “Let Me Calm Down” fared just slightly better. Then things really nose-dived.

When Minaj departed for another anticipated interlude, R&B vocalist Monica (who opened the show) filled what amounted to a nearly half-hour intermission. The head-scratching decision to pause that far into the concert drained the energy. The prolonged setup of a prop that resembled an illuminated monorail car sapped any spirit that remained. Note to Minaj: If something causes that long of a delay, it doesn’t belong onstage. Refer to the unofficial Spinal Tap rule.

At least Minaj would re-emerge and race to a breathless finish, right? Not exactly. The rapper drifted, detouring into a monologue during which she spouted armchair psychology and motivational platitudes. Well-intended, maybe. But did everyone then deserve to endure tone-deaf fans holding Minaj’s microphone and singing the chorus of “The Night Is Still Young”?

Besides, that song’s sentiment no longer applied. By the time the rapper recalibrated her direction via the electro-pulsing bounce of “Starships” and hybrid hip-hop of the celebratory “Everybody,” midnight on a school night beckoned.

Setlist from the United Center April 24: Part 1 “I’m the Best” “Barbie Dangerous” “FTCU” “Beep Beep” “Hard White” “Press Play” “Win Again” “Chi-Raq” “Big Difference” “Beez in the Trap” “Pink Birthday” “Feeling Myself” “Favorite” “Want Some More” “Cowgirl” “RNB” “High School” “Needle” “Chun-Li” “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” “Barbie World” “Roman’s Revenge” “Monster” (Ye cover) “Fallin 4 U” “Right Thru Me” “Save Me” “Here I Am” “Let Me Calm Down”

Part 2 “Super Freaky Girl” “Anaconda” “Super Bass” “The Night Is Still Young” “Moment 4 Life” “Starships” “Everybody”

Nicki Minaj Throws Item Back into Crowd After Nearly Getting Hit by Object Onstage

The singer was performing on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour when a fan threw an object at her from the crowd

Nicki Minaj was left unimpressed after a fan threw an object at her onstage.

In a video shared by Pop Crave on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday, April 21, the rapper could be seen performing in Detroit on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour when a pink item was launched at her from the crowd.

Blocking the object with her hand, Minaj, who was performing her hit "Starships," then crouched to pick it up before throwing it back into the audience.

Minaj, 41, appeared to be shocked by the moment as she turned back with her mouth open, before returning to performing.

A representative for Minaj did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment about the incident.

Prince Williams/FilmMagic

The “Barbie World” singer is the latest in a line of stars to have an item thrown at them onstage.

In June 2023, Bebe Rexha was hit on the forehead with a phone during her concert at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City.

The New York District Attorney's Office told PEOPLE at the time that Nicolas Malvanga was arrested on several misdemeanor charges: two counts of third-degree assault as well as second-degree aggravated harassment, third-degree attempted assault and second-degree harassment.

"I was trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny ,” Malvanga, 27, of New Jersey told police, according to the criminal complaint.

Rexha’s injuries consisted of a split eyebrow that required stitches. After being escorted off the stage, she was treated by a medical team at the venue, as seen in footage shared on X , and taken to a nearby hospital.

She then shared a post on her Instagram of her stitches and a black eye with the caption, "I'm good.”

Other stars have also spoken out about objects being thrown onstage.

“This trend of throwing things at performers while they are on stage must come to an end. It’s so disrespectful and very dangerous. Please just enjoy the music I beg of you…" Charlie Puth wrote on X after Rexha, Ava Max and Kelsea Ballerini were hit during concerts.

During a Weekends with Adele show at The Colosseum in Las Vegas last year, Adele also said, “Have you noticed how people are forgetting f---ing show etiquette at the moment. People are throwing s--- on stage. Have you seen that? I f---ing dare you — I dare you throw something at me. I’ll f---ing kill you.”

"Stop throwing things at the artist ... These people have lost it. Can you imagine?” she added.

Concert review: Nicki Minaj lit up Target Center whenever she was on stage

T he sold-out crowd Saturday night at Minneapolis’ Target Center was ready and waiting for Nicki Minaj. In the 14 years since the Trinidadian rapper/singer first broke through, she’s become the best-selling female hip-hop star in the world while maintaining side gigs acting in films and succeeding as an entrepreneur.

Somewhat shockingly, the Pink Friday 2 World Tour is Minaj’s first U.S. tour in nearly a decade, and Saturday served as Minaj’s debut headlining a Twin Cities arena. Those facts brought an extra charge to the audience, many of whom wore pink, Minaj’s favorite color. With all of that waiting, well, perhaps Minaj thought they could wait a little bit longer.

Despite an advertised start time of 8 p.m., Minaj didn’t take the stage until 10:10 p.m. in the noticeably stuffy basketball arena. If that sounds familiar, it’s also the way Madonna does it. One could make the argument that a musical act with the outsized success of Madonna, or Minaj, makes it worth it.

Well, Minaj delivered a top-notch show with more than 30 songs along with fog, fire, lights and a massive stage that served double duty as a screen flashing custom animations throughout. Even with all that razzle and dazzle, Minaj commanded the attention, and devotion, of the crowd — when she was actually on stage, that is.

For all the attention clearly paid to the concert’s visual presentation and its generous set list, somebody forgot about pacing. In order to facilitate Minaj’s many costume changes, a series of lengthy interludes brought the momentum to a screeching halt. During the first hour, every time it seemed like Minaj was really hitting her stride, one of four interludes interrupted, each seemingly longer than the one before.

After a mini set of songs that showcased her singing, Minaj ceded the stage to her “opening” act Monica. While the R&B vocalist’s time in the spotlight fell way back in the latter half of the ’90s, her voice has more than just held up and her short set had Gen Xers in the audience swooning. When she finished, the crowd had to endure yet another interlude.

Again, when she was on stage, Minaj shined. For much of the evening, she held the posture of royalty, standing in place and making grand gestures with her arms. A backup dancer held her hand and guided her down the two flights of steps whenever she decided it was time to find a new space to rule on the stage.

She didn’t dance as much as one might expect, but when she did, she delivered, like during “Cowgirl” when she swayed seductively flanked by four muscular male dancers in Stetsons. She laid down on the stage and performed “Pink Birthday” writhing and thrusting to the beat and never missing a line. Indeed, Minaj impressed with her fluid, dynamic rapping and her uncanny ability to keep each word distinct, even during the fastest bits.

Minaj noticeably loosened up after the Monica mini-concert when she tore through a run of her biggest hits, including “Super Freaky Girl,” “Anaconda,” “Super Bass” and “Starships.” The latter earned the strongest reaction of the night from the crowd, who walked out glowing, likely to forgive and/or forget about the slow moments.
