I travel with maybe ten pair of earrings, and a change of necklace or two. Each item goes in a tiny ziplock plastic bag, and all the bags go in a fabric pouch. (Currently muslin, I’m on an off-white fabric kick.) This pouch goes in my backpack, so I always know where to find my jewelry.

30 ways to travel with jewelry and keep it all organized.

' src=

Traveling with jewelry is a nice way to stay stylish while traveling and accessorize your look without bringing dozens of outfits. But how do you keep it all organized without opening your bag to find a big, tangled mess?

We’ve scoured the Internet for the best hacks for traveling with jewelry and some offbeat ways to travel with necklaces, earrings, rings, and bracelets. Best of all, most of these don’t require you to buy anything, as a number can be found around your house.

Ways to Keep Your Jewelry Organized in Luggage

Mint tins for rings and earrings

1. Mint tin: Save those Altoids or Tic Tacs containers after you are done with them! They make for a great container for jewelry, especially when you add a cotton ball to protect them.

2. Hard sided jewelry cases: While they take up more room, cases like Caracaise, which looks like a briefcase with foam cushioning, and smaller versions with compartments for earrings, fully protect your items. Something like this on Amazon would work.

3. Drawstring jewelry cases: Another type of jewelry case is the pouch, which you can buy or make yourself . This allows you to place all of your items on a circular piece of fabric that has strings that pull it into a pouch. It’s better suited for everything but necklaces.

4. O-Rings: Metal ring clips that are used for crafts and school projects can also be used for rings, bracelets and necklaces. Simply open it, slip them on, and pack! See these on Amazon .

Use straws to keep your necklaces from tangling.

5. Drinking straws: Prevent your necklaces from getting tangled. Simply thread one side of the chain through a plastic straw and attach at the other end. It keeps one side rigid and tangle-free.

6. Pill containers: Do you have a days of the week pill organizer? Use it to separate rings and earrings on-the-go. You can use one you have at home or purchase from your local pharmacy for around $5.

7. Travel toiletry containers: Use those extra GoTubbs , snack cups and other travel containers to store small jewelry items. They’re ideal for rings and earrings that won’t be affected by tangling.

8. Cling Wrap: Ideal for necklaces, you can prevent tangling by lying the items out on one piece of the “ Press N Seal ” style and pressing them together, making sure to give space between them. You should be able to find it easily at the grocery store, but standard cling wrap will also work if you roll it.

travel jewelry roll

9. Jewelry rolls: Organize your items through zippered compartments and a large panel that folds over and ties to keep from getting tangled. Buy online or make your own using these instructions . They also take up little room since they lie flat.

10. Ziploc bags : If you have plenty of bags, place one item in each bag with end of the necklace zipped in the top. Rings and earrings can be placed into bags together.

11. Washcloth and rubber bands: I love this idea from Pinterest about how to make your own jewelry roll without buying or sewing anything. Simply place your necklaces apart on a washcloth, roll them lengthwise and fold in half, adding rubber bands to each end to keep them secure.

12. Erasers: Keep the backs to your stud earrings from getting lost in transit by sticking them in a simple eraser leftover from your school days.

bead organizers for jewelry

13. Craft store bead organizer or fishing tackle container: These are basically the same but are marketed differently. Either way, seek out a clear plastic container with removable compartments. That way, you can change them out for your specific items.

14. Travel soap dish: Store bracelets, earrings, and rings in a travel soap dish that you can pick up at just about any store. It can protect everything and keep it in one place.

15. Contacts case : These work for almost everything, specifically small earrings. Use a container you no longer have a use for.

16. Styrofoam plate: Simply stick your earrings through the plate, which is best for studs and dangling earrings. Then you can throw it in your suitcase, surrounded by other things.

carabiners work well for rings

17. Carabiners : You really can use them for everything! These cheap items can be used for bracelets or even necklaces by simply clipping them on.

18. Toilet paper roll: Once you’ve used it all, loop your bracelets around it and then strand your necklaces through the tube itself. Place on top of your suitcase for the best results.

19. Baseball card holders : Remember those plastic divider pages you’d use to protect baseball cards or other collectibles? They also are great for separating your jewelry. Place each item in its own pocket.

20. Glasses case: Once you’ve grown out of a pair of glasses, use your glasses or sunglasses case for bracelets, earrings, and smaller items.

Old buttons are small and easy to pack with earrings.

21. Buttons: Keep those earring backs safe by threading them through those extra buttons you’ve been saving from every shirt.

22. Safety pins: Loop your hoops or dainty necklaces through a safety pin like you would with the carabiner.

23. Zippered pouches: You can buy these in satin varieties in Asia or at stores like the Container Store in the US. Small pouches of any variety will do for bracelets and earrings.

24. Socks : A member of our HPLWorld community recommended using socks for rings. You can place items inside since you’ll already be packing them.

empty lip balm tubes hold jewelry

25. Empty lip balm container: This one is specific to the Eos brand , but once you’ve used all the lip balm, they make a great earring container. Pop them in your purse for safekeeping!

26. Hanging jewelry cases: Like jewelry rolls, these toiletry and cosmetic cases can also be used for jewelry. It allows you to keep organized while being able to see everything. Check this one out on Amazon.

27. Cupcake liners: Another recommended placing earrings in cupcake liners, either paper or foil, and then wrapping in foil or another item to keep everything in place.

28. Index cards: Push backs of earrings through or loop bracelets and necklaces around them.

Use business or playing cards to keep jewelry organized.

29. Business or playing cards: Like with index cards, you can organize necklaces by placing two small cuts in cards to wrap around tightly and keep secure.

30. Wine corks: Similar to erasers, use wine corks for earring backs.

Extra Tips for Traveling with Jewelry

We’ve mentioned it briefly in the intro, but choosing the right jewelry can be an easy way to take your outfit from day to night. Here are some extra tips to consider:

1) Pack a statement necklace. Something bold will take the attention off the clothing underneath, and it will trick you into feeling like you’re wearing a completely new outfit. Plus statement necklaces can dress up the most simple ensembles! (See our professional packing list for more tips.)

2) Pack cheap jewelry. It goes without saying that you should never pack any jewelry that you’d be upset with losing or having stolen.

How to Pack Jewelry for Travel | 22 Best Packing Methods

How to Pack Jewelry for Travel

Traveling means you have to pack and unpack a lot, and knowing how to pack jewelry for travel without tangling is a skill you have to master. Especially when it comes to something valuable and easy-to-lose when moving, like jewelry, it is really important to pack them securely. Otherwise, you’ll have to deal with a jumbled-up mess when you reach your destination.

That is a real pain, especially because you might end up destroying your jewelry when you try to get them untangled. To prevent that from happening, I have come up with this article to teach you how to pack jewelry for travel. If you are someone who loves staying stylish while accessorizing yourself with jewelry, you’ll find so many tips and tricks here that you can implement on your next trip.

I’ve scoured the internet in search of tips on how to pack jewelry for travel and compiled an in-depth list and some offbeat ways you can pack your jewelry. You’ll find some creative ways to pack your necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets that mostly don’t require buying any expensive jewelry organizers. Let’s get started!

How to pack jewelry for travel using traditional ways

The following are some of the most popular conventional methods that are appropriate if you’re constantly on the go and require a quick and effective way to pack your jewelry when you’re on the move.

01. Jewelry rolls

Jewelry rolls are a great way to reduce space while still ensuring the safety of all your valuables. If you’re a lady who’s always on the go, whether for business or pleasure, this is the jewelry packing strategy for you.

Jewelry rolls are often constructed of soft fabric or leather and include many zippered sections that may be used to pack various kinds of jewelry. Simply roll it up and secure it as the name suggests after you’ve sorted and packed your jewelry for travel.

02. Jewelry boxes

When traveling, jewelry boxes may be a real pain in the neck, particularly if they’re in your carry-on bag. Thus, it is not the best way, but if you have one at home, you can use it to pack jewelry for travel. This won’t save you as much space as a jewelry roll, but if you have the space in your suitcase, it’s one of the quickest and most convenient solutions available to you to pack your jewelry.

03. Individual jewelry pouches

When you buy a brand new piece of jewelry, it is often packaged in a charming little pouch or wallet. Despite the fact that you would assume they are just for show, there are many uses for them that make them worthwhile to have around.

When it comes to packing your jewelry for travel, you can use these little bags to keep your pieces organized and safe while on the road. Although this is not the most effective method when you have a large number of accessories to pack, it is a fantastic idea when you just have a few key pieces to bring with you.

How to pack jewelry for travel using DIY ways

How to pack jewelry for travel using DIY ways

The following are quick and easy ways to pack jewelry using items that are lying around your house. You’ll be surprised to see how innovative and easy these DIY ideas are.

04. Hobby boxes

A hobby box is a good alternative to a jewelry box. They come with a variety of compartments for separating your jewels. There are also several styles to choose from, so you can choose one that best matches your needs. You can get a hobby box from almost any department store.

05. Pill cases

If you don’t already own a pill case, you can get one for a very reasonable price. Small and fragile jewelry such as stud earrings and rings may be packed safely and securely in this container. You can store each one in its own compartment, which makes it easy to keep them all in order. As these containers usually have seven compartments, you can even plan what pieces you are going to wear each day.

06. Washcloth

Using a washcloth or a soft piece of cloth to store your jewelry is another efficient method to pack jewelry for travel. It is inspired by the jewelry roll, but it does not have any compartments, making it more suitable for necklaces.

Simply put a clean cloth flat on a table and place the necklaces one inch away from one another. Roll up the cloth, making sure that the necklaces are hidden in the folds as you go. Once the necklaces are wrapped up, use a clip, pin, or peg to secure the two ends together to prevent the necklaces from sliding out.

07. Plastic wrap

Another creative way to pack your jewelry is to use the plastic wrap that you already have in your kitchen. The advantage of this over the washcloth is that it is waterproof and can be used for many types of jewelry, not only necklaces.

The first step is to cut up a piece of plastic wrap large enough to hold all of your jewelry in one place. Put it on a flat surface, and make sure the sticky side is up. Place your jewelry on top of it, making sure there is enough room between each item.

To finish the job, cut the second piece of plastic wrap to the same size or larger and lay it on top of your jewelry with the adhesive side facing down. Press down on the plastic wrap to remove any air bubbles and secure the jewelry items in place. Seal the ends of the plastic wrap to ensure that nothing slides off, and then roll it up.

Another way is to use business cards as a background and then wrap each piece individually in plastic wrap. After that, place each in a Ziploc bag to secure them.

08. Packing paper

You can also use white, non-colored, or soft packing paper to pack jewelry for travel. Never pack your jewelry in a newspaper or on a printed piece of paper, as it can discolor fine metals.

09. Drinking straws

This is another item that you may already have in your kitchen, or at the very least, that you can simply get at a convenience store. Straws are excellent for storing necklaces that are thin and fragile.

Cut the drinking straw to the same length as the chain when it is closed. Thread the chain through the straw and clasp it tight, and there you have it! Tangle-free. You can then put the necklaces in a ziplock bag and carry them in your bag with no worries.

10. Ziplock bags

Another way to pack jewelry for travel is to store it individually in ziplock bags. Airtight ziplock bags can prevent sterling silver jewelry from tarnishing. You can use this method to pack non-silver jewelry as well. Since you are packing each piece of jewelry individually, you can keep them tangle-free, with all pieces together without misplacing any.

11. Toilet paper rolls

Given that toilet paper is already a necessary thing to have on hand while traveling, why not make good use of it? They work in the same way as drinking straws. However, they are better for big, bold necklaces, not smaller ones. They are an excellent choice if you just have a few statement necklaces to carry with you. Otherwise, you may end up stuffing your bag with tissue rolls.

12. Foldable hangers

The use of foldable hangers is another excellent method of packaging a statement that is too large and bulky. Wrap the necklaces around a hanger and put them in a suitcase, and you’re done.

It keeps the necklaces from becoming tangled and takes up little room in your bag. As soon as you get to your location, you can pull the hangers out of the suitcases and store them in the closet until you need to pack them again.

13. Cardboards

To make your earrings, just punch two holes in a piece of stiff card and insert your earrings through them. When wearing fish hook earrings, the backs of the earrings may be secured to your card so that they do not fall out. To be on the safe side, slip the card piece inside a plastic bag in case any earrings get loosened during transit.

14. Buttons

Take a piece of ribbon or cotton fabric. Place the buttons on the top of the fabric or ribbon. Attach your earrings to the ribbon or fabric by threading them through the buttonholes. Earrings that have earing backs should be closed at the back of the ribbon or piece of cloth. Then, roll it up gently and put it in a hand towel.

15. Mint tins

Small mint tins are ideal for storing little items such as rings, tennis bracelets, and stud earrings. The small size makes it simple and easy to stash a couple in your bag to keep jewelry organized and hidden. A pro tip is to place a cotton ball inside the container to prevent things from rattling about and being damaged.

16. Bead organizers

Even though these plastic storage boxes are designed for beads, they are ideal for storing a large number of earrings for a short period of time. You can put 1-3 pairs of small earrings or rings in each nook.

17. Styrofoam plates and cups

Pin your little earrings on the plate’s top section. The center and bottom parts may be used to pin the longer, more chunky earrings. All your earrings and clasped chains will fit this part. Then, put the pinned plate in a ziplock bag.

You can keep your necklaces in plastic cups or Styrofoam glasses. Wrap a piece of cloth over them to keep them from being tossed about in your baggage. This approach is an affordable and long-lasting way to pack jewelry for travel.

18. Soap holders

Soap holders are another item that can be found in your home and can be purchased at almost any store. You can use a soap holder to store earrings, bracelets, and rings. It can safeguard everything while keeping it all in one place.

19. Contact case

Everyone who wears contacts has a few extra contact cases lying around the house. Contact cases are excellent storage containers for small stud earrings, tiny hoop earrings, pendants, and rings while traveling. On each side of the case, you can place one piece of jewelry, and it will remain safe and protected from damage during your journey.

20. Secure cases

It is a good idea to keep all of your jewelry in one safe place when you travel, whether you use the box, it came in or a special jewelry organizer. After you have individually packaged everything to ensure that it does not get damaged or dinged, organize them all together in one place.

Secure cases come in handy when you don’t have enough space in your luggage to keep your jewelry organized while traveling light. If you travel constantly, you may want to invest in a travel jewelry organizer that can also be used as a storage box while you are at your destination.

21. Dustbags

After you pack jewelry for travel, you can use dust bags to sort them into separate containers or to group similar pieces. As an example, place all of your gold hoop earrings in one dust bag and all of your rings in a different one.

22. Bubble wrap

Bubble wrap is also great for securing your delicate jewelry pieces even more. Once you’ve packed everything using the DIY methods mentioned here, you can wrap those using bubble wrap for more security.

Wrap it up!

By now, you’ve learned so many creative methods for how to pack jewelry for travel. As you can see, packing jewelry for travel does not have to be a difficult or time-consuming task. If you look around your house and put some thought into it, you’ll be able to come up with even more fantastic ways to pack jewelry for travel. And if you do, feel free to leave a comment below, so others can try it too. Best Ways to Pack and Organize Jewelry for Travel

How to Pack Jewelry for Travel

When traveling, not only do you have to figure out how to safely pack your clothing, toiletries, and other essentials, like your  passport . You also want to bring jewelry and other accessories.

So, what's the best way to travel with jewelry? Should you pack it in your checked baggage or in your carry-on? And how do you keep your necklaces from tangling? Can you wear jewelry through airport security? What will set off metal detectors?

Here is everything you need to know to pack and travel with your jewelry:

What jewelry can you wear through airport security?

You can wear jewelry while traveling, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the type of metal. Sterling silver and gold are mostly fine to wear through security, while other metals may set off the alarms.

Second, consider the size and style of your jewelry. Big metal statement necklaces and some watches will set off the alarms. Digital watches, small earrings, rings, and other small jewelry should pass through fine.

Does gold set off metal detectors?

Gold is a metal that can set off the detectors if you are wearing a big chunky piece. However, if you have a small piece of jewelry, like a ring or earrings, they are unlikely to cause problems.

Does silver set off metal detectors?

Sterling silver is also a metal that has a good chance of setting off the security metal detectors. However, like gold, if you have a small piece of jewelry, it's unlikely to cause any issues.

What metals set off metal detectors?

Any substantial amount of metal, including copper, brass, and aluminum can set off the detectors at the airport. If you have a piece of jewelry made with one of these metals, it's best to take it off before you go through security. Point out to the security agents what you are wearing or just remove them and place them in your bags ahead of time.

Can you take jewelry on a plane in your carry on?

When deciding whether to pack your jewelry in a carry-on or checked bag, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, think about the value of your jewelry. If you have expensive or sentimental jewelry, carry it on to lower the risk of it getting lost or damaged in transit.

Second, consider the size and style of your jewelry. If you have large or bulky pieces, they may be better stored in your checked bag. Finally, pack your jewelry in a protective case, pouch or other  travel organizer to prevent it from getting damaged during the journey.

Travel Organizers

If you love organization,  Crew VersaPack Luggage is a great choice for keeping jewelry, accessories, and everything else tidy with a variety of optional zip-in organizers that serve all sorts of needs.

How to pack necklaces for travel

Necklaces are one of the trickier pieces of jewelry to pack for travel. You'll want to ensure it doesn't get tangled. The best way to do this is to put it in a small pouch or wrap it in bubble wrap or tissue paper before placing it in your suitcase.

If you have a thicker or more durable necklace, you can simply loop it a few times and tuck it into the accessory pouch of your bag.

Packing Rings and Earrings

One of the most common questions is, "Can you bring earrings on a plane?" The answer is yes, but rings and earrings are easy to lose, so pack them carefully. One way is to put them in a pill case or other small container. You can also put them in a plastic bag that seals.

Storing Jewelry While Traveling

Once you've arrived at your destination, you'll need to find a safe place to store your jewelry. Most hotel rooms have a safe where you can store your valuables. You can also keep your jewelry stored in your luggage, if your luggage has a lock.

When you're out and about, only wear the jewelry you need for the day. Leave the rest safely tucked away in your room.

Jewelry in checked luggage

Putting jewelry in your checked bag is ok, but choose carefully. You don't want to add too much weight to your bag or risk losing anything too valuable.

First, take inventory of what you're bringing. Pack important pieces in your carry-on bag, and only bring what you're comfortable losing in your checked luggage.

Next, choose how you'll pack your jewelry. Investing in a travel jewelry case or jewelry organizer that protects your pieces is a good plan. If you're using a jewelry box, wrap each piece individually in soft cloth to prevent scratching.

Using packing cubes and travel pouches

If you like the idea of a travel jewelry organizer for keeping your baubles safe and handy, the  Travelpro Essentials Max Access Small Cube organizer gives you plenty of space. At the same time, its angled zipper opening makes finding what you want quick and easy.

For a lot of jewelry, it may be worth investing in a dedicated jewelry roll that has multiple compartments for different types of jewelry and a built-in mirror. But this can add bulk to your bag.  Ultra-lightweight packing cubes and travel pouches are a great option for keeping all of your accessories and clothing organized.

Importance of bags with locks

Always use a lock when packing jewelry in your luggage. Locked bags deter thieves and help keep your items safe. Look for luggage with TSA-approved locks that can be safely opened and relocked with a master key in case your luggage needs to be inspected by authorities when you’re not there.

Packing jewelry for travel is easy with a bit of planning. Just take inventory of what you're bringing, choose the right packing method, and use a lock for extra security. Safe travels!

We’ve curated some of our favorite tips and tricks for traveling with jewelry. Discover secrets on how to pack jewelry for travel, suggestions for which pieces to bring on your trip and advice on how to keep your jewelry safe when you’re traveling.

Choosing Travel Jewelry Pieces

Packing your favorite women’s and men’s jewelry for your upcoming trip? It’s best to bring along items that are durable, such as 14k gold jewelry , platinum jewelry , silver jewelry or lab grown diamond jewelry . These materials are sturdy, bringing beautiful style no matter how far you’re taking them.

Keep safety in mind when choosing which pieces to bring on a trip. Certain journeys and destinations may not be best for bringing your favorite fine jewelry along. In these instances, costume styles are often the best choice.

How to Pack Jewelry

travel packing jewelry

There are several ways to pack your jewelry, from specialized cases to more DIY approaches. Wh en packing your jewelry, regardless of which technique you choose, keeping things secure should be your main goal. This will ensure that you don’t lose any items during your travels, along with helping to prevent tangling.

When packing jewelry, you should:

  • Use specialized storage, like a jewelry travel case.
  • Secure chains on necklaces and bracelets to avoid tangling.
  • Keep earring pairs together.
  • Separate fragile pieces, such as opals, from the rest of your jewelry.
  • Put similar materials together.
  • Use tissue, straws or tape to secure thinner pieces.

Some jewelry items, such as engagement rings , are worn throughout the whole trip and don’t need to be put in a travel jewelry case. If you’re packing an engagement ring in your luggage because you’re proposing on your trip, make sure to keep the ring in its original box and secure it in a locked section of your carry-on bag.

Types of Travel Jewelry Cases

A travel jewelry case can help you keep your pieces organized, secured and safe while you’re headed to your destination. Many cases have specialized storage s ections for earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets. You can choose from smaller storage cases for a small selection, or a larger case that can fit multiple styles together.

Pearl and diamond jewelry in a travel jewelry case.

It’s best to choose the case that fits your collection. For people traveling with mainly bracelets or necklaces , this may look like a case with loops that secure the full length of each piece to prevent tangling. For those traveling with more rings or earrings , the right travel case is one with tightly packed rolls that can secure a set of dangling earrings or several rings.

Most people who are traveling with jewelry choose to use a specialized jewelry travel case, with designs for all price points readily available online. Other people prefer to use the original packaging for their jewelry, which is especially helpful in instances where only one or two pieces are brought on a trip.

DIY Jewelry Packing Hacks

While travel jewelry cases are the most popular fit for packing your jewelry, there are also DIY options that can help you bring your favorite pieces along. Pill cases, cardboard tubes, business cards, tins, straws and carabiners are all solutions for packing your jewelry.

You can count on virtually anything for earring storage when traveling. Push your favorite pairs into an eraser to keep them all in one place. To transport your earrings with their backings, pierce your sets through a business card or piece of construction paper to keep them together. Smaller studs can also be put in pill organizers or metal tins for easy travel storage.

Necklaces and Bracelets

Pendant and chain necklaces require a little more planning if you’re taking the DIY route to packing them for travel. Keep your focus on preventing tangling so you can enjoy your jewelry at your destination. To keep chains from tangling, loop each necklace or bracelet through a straw and secure the clasp closed.

You can also use a cardboard tube, such as one from a paper towel or toilet paper roll, to keep necklaces and bracelets organized when traveling. Loop necklaces through the length of the tube and wrap bracelets around the width.

When it comes to packing necklaces for travel, visualizing a knotted mess of necklace chains may cause you enough anxiety to avoid packing jewelry altogether. There are several easy ways to organize your necklaces when packing to ensure they stay separated and in good condition. Once you read how simple it is to pack necklaces carefully, all that’s left to do is decide which necklaces to bring with you. Just don’t forget to keep in mind the extra precautions to take when traveling with expensive jewelry.

Wrapping Necklaces in Plastic Wrap

Step 1 Unroll a large piece of plastic wrap.

  • You can use regular plastic wrap or press and seal plastic wrap for this method of storing necklaces.

Step 2 Space the necklaces evenly across the plastic wrap.

  • When traveling with more than 6 necklaces, you may want to split the necklaces onto 2 separate sheets of plastic wrap as this can be easier to deal with. If so, repeat the directions for each batch of necklaces.

Step 3 Cut another sheet of plastic wrap that is the same size as the first one.

  • Don’t forget that plastic wrap is super sticky. Do your best to carefully remove it from the roll while holding onto each cut edge so it doesn’t become unruly.

Step 4 Place the second piece of plastic wrap on top of the first sheet.

  • Be sure the necklaces between the plastic wrap stay separated. Use your fingers to adjust the necklaces as needed.

Step 5 Press to seal the necklaces between the two sheets of plastic wrap.

  • Since you have already secured each necklace within the plastic wrap, they will remain separated and safe when rolled up.

Packing Necklaces in Straws

Step 1 Gather one straw for each necklace you plan to pack.

  • The type of plastic straw used will depend on the size of your necklaces. Thin straws will work well for thin chain necklaces, while straws with a larger opening will be best for necklaces that have more bulk.

Step 2 Unclasp a necklace and thread it through a straw.

  • If your necklace has a pendant, slide it towards one end of your necklace so you can thread most of the chain through the straw. Leave the pendant outside of the straw, as it probably won't fit.

Step 3 Close the clasp of each necklace.

  • The straw ensures that the necklace won’t get tangled with itself or another piece of jewelry. It will keep the necklace pulled taught and secure.

Step 4 Place necklaces into a toothbrush holder or Ziploc bag.

  • Use a large Ziploc bag to store your necklaces. Once you have placed the necklaces into the bag, roll the bag up so the necklaces don’t move around in transit.
  • If you are only bringing a few necklaces, try dropping them into a plastic toothbrush holder to keep them safe and secure.

Step 5 Pack chunky necklaces by slipping them through a toilet paper tube.

  • You can also use a paper towel tube for long chunky necklaces. Cut the roll down to the right size if necessary.

Step 1 Leave your most valuable pieces at home.

  • If you are going on a leisurely trip, try not to bring anything you are going to worry about losing. Bring a few neutral pieces that will work with multiple outfits but that you don’t have a lot of emotional or financial attachment to.
  • Consider leaving particularly sentimental pieces (like wedding rings) at home. Wear a less valuable alternative on your ring finger during your trip.

Step 2 Make a list of all the necklaces you are traveling with to keep track of them.

  • It may be smart to take photos of the necklaces before you leave for your trip. If you misplace jewelry that is insured, photographs can be helpful when making a claim.

Step 3 Pack necklaces in your carry-on to keep them close by.

  • Carrying the necklaces in your purse or personal bag is your best bet when it comes to traveling with expensive necklaces.

Step 4 Store expensive necklaces in the in-room safe.

To pack your necklaces for traveling, try using plastic wrap. Lay your necklaces vertically on the plastic wrap 2 inches apart, then cover them with another piece of wrap that’s the same size. You can also try using straws so your necklaces don’t get tangled. Just thread each necklace you want to take through a straw and place them in a small bag. If your necklaces are chunky, use a toilet paper tube instead. For tips on where to pack your necklaces in your luggage, read on! Did this summary help you? Yes No

How to Pack Jewelry for Travel

' data-srcset=

Over the years, I’ve gotten pretty good at packing my jewelry for trips. It’s all about making sure my favourite pieces are safe while still being able to show off my style wherever I am. I’ve learned some neat ways to keep everything organized , whether I’m off to explore a busy city, relax on a beach, or go on a hike. These tips have made a difference, and I’m excited to share them with you.

This guide is all about making jewelry packing easy. I want to help you pack your jewelry so it’s one less thing to worry about when you’re getting ready for your trip.

Understanding Your Jewelry Packing Needs

When packing for a trip, I always start by looking at what I have planned. This helps me decide on the jewelry that will match my activities. If there’s a fancy dinner or a special event on the agenda, I’ll pack something a bit more elegant. For more relaxed vacations, I prefer simple pieces that work with many different outfits.

Assessing Your Travel Jewelry Collection

I’ve learned it’s best not to take my entire collection with me. Instead, I select a few pieces that match the mood of my trip . A couple of necklaces that can go with anything, my favourite earrings, one or two bracelets, and a watch are usually all I need. The idea is to choose items that can be mixed and matched for various occasions.

Considering Your Travel Destination

The destination greatly influences my choices. If I’m going to the beach, I leave behind anything too delicate, as sand and water can cause damage. In a city setting, I might bring a standout piece to add some flair to my city exploration outfits.

Packing the right jewelry not only complements your travel outfits but also helps you feel more put together while exploring new places. With a bit of planning, you can bring the perfect pieces to enhance your travel wardrobe without taking up too much space.

DIY Jewelry Packing Solutions

Packing jewelry for travel doesn’t always require specialized products . Often, you can use items you already have at home to keep your jewelry safe and organized. Here are some of my favourite DIY solutions:

  • Straw for Chains:

To prevent necklaces from tangling, thread the chain through a plastic or paper straw and fasten the clasp. This keeps the chain straight and tangle-free. If you have a longer necklace, you can cut the straw to fit the length you need.

  • Button for Earrings:

A simple button can be a lifesaver for keeping pairs of earrings together. Just push the earring posts through the holes in the button, and secure them with the backs. This is especially handy for stud earrings and ensures you won’t lose a pair in the depths of your bag.

  • Business Card for Earrings:

Similar to the button method, you can use a business card or a thick piece of cardstock to organize your earrings. Poke the earrings through the card and secure them on the other side. This not only keeps pairs together but also makes it easy to see all your options at a glance.

  • Cloth Wrap for Bracelets and Watches:

Use a soft piece of cloth, like a microfiber cloth or even a small scarf, to wrap bracelets and watches. Lay the cloth flat, place your items on top, and roll the cloth around them. This provides cushioning and prevents scratches.

  • Tissue Paper for Delicate Items:

Wrap delicate pieces like fine chains or dainty earrings in tissue paper before placing them in your bag or organizer. The tissue paper provides a gentle barrier that protects against scratches and minor impacts.

  • Small Zip Bags for Individual Pieces:

If you have small zip bags (like the ones used for buttons or beads), they’re perfect for storing individual pieces. You can use them for rings, smaller earrings, or even pendants. This keeps everything organized and prevents items from rubbing against each other.

By utilizing these DIY solutions, you can pack your jewelry efficiently using items you likely already have at home. It’s all about being resourceful and protecting your precious pieces while on the move.

Step-by-Step Guide to Packing Your Jewelry

When I pack my jewelry for a trip, I follow a few simple steps to make sure everything stays organized and protected. Here’s my go-to process:

Preventing Tangles and Damage

One of the biggest challenges I face is keeping my necklaces and bracelets from turning into a tangled mess. Here’s what I do:

Necklaces: I use the straw method I mentioned earlier, threading each necklace through a straw and fastening the clasp. For chunkier necklaces that won’t fit in a straw, I lay them flat between two sheets of cling film. The film holds them in place and prevents tangling.

Bracelets: I group my bracelets together based on size and style. Then, I either roll them in a soft cloth or place them in individual sections of a jewelry roll. This keeps them from getting scratched and tangled with other pieces.

Earrings: I secure my earrings to a piece of cardstock or through the holes of a button, as I’ve found this keeps pairs together and prevents any loss.

Maximizing Space and Security

Since space is always at a premium when I’m packing, I try to be as efficient as possible with my jewelry. Here’s how I make the most of it:

Choose Wisely: I only take the pieces I’m sure I’ll wear. This not only saves space but also minimizes the risk of losing something valuable.

Pack Smart: I place my jewelry case or wrapped pieces in the center of my suitcase, surrounded by soft clothing. This provides an extra layer of protection.

Last Check: Before I close my suitcase, I always do a final check to ensure that all my jewelry pieces are securely packed and that I haven’t forgotten anything essential.

By following these steps, I’ve managed to keep my jewelry safe and organized, no matter where I’m headed. It’s all about being mindful and taking a few extra moments to pack with care.

Advanced Jewelry Packing Tips and Hacks

Through my travels, I’ve stumbled upon some clever tricks that have significantly simplified the way I pack my jewelry. These insights could help streamline your packing routine too.

Innovative Jewelry Packing Hacks

Discovering new methods to ease the packing process is always exciting. Here are a few strategies I’ve found incredibly useful:

Silicone Ice Cube Trays for Rings and Small Earrings

I’ve started using a silicone ice cube tray to keep my rings and small earrings organized. Each compartment holds a piece or a pair, and it’s easy to wrap the whole tray in a thin cloth or plastic wrap for added protection. It’s a simple, space-saving solution that keeps everything in its place.

Tic Tac Containers for Bobby Pins and Small Jewelry

Those empty Tic Tac containers come in handy for storing bobby pins and small jewelry items like stud earrings or small brooches. It’s a great way to recycle, and the compact size is perfect for travel.

Roll-Up Cloth Pouch for Versatility

I’ve taken to using a soft cloth, like a handkerchief or a small scarf, and laying my jewelry on it before rolling it up tightly. This method works especially well for mixed items like watches, bracelets, and larger earrings. Once rolled, I secure it with a rubber band or a ribbon.

These hacks not only keep my jewelry organized but also add an extra layer of protection against scratches and impacts. Also, they make unpacking a breeze, as everything is easy to find and ready to wear.

Caring for Your Jewelry on the Go

Taking care of my jewelry while I’m travelling is just as important as packing it right. I’ve learned some easy ways to keep everything looking its best, even when I’m far from home.

Quick and Easy Cleaning Tips

Even on the move, it’s possible to keep your jewelry shining. Here’s how I do it:

Soft Cloth: I always carry a soft, lint-free cloth in my jewelry pouch. A quick polish can remove fingerprints and light tarnish from metal pieces, keeping them shiny.

Ziplock Bag with Chalk: To prevent silver jewelry from tarnishing, I put a piece of chalk in a small ziplock bag along with my silver items. The chalk absorbs moisture and sulfur compounds in the air, slowing down the tarnishing process.

Mild Soap and Water: For a deeper clean, especially for durable stones like diamonds, sapphires, and rubies, I use a solution of mild soap and water. I gently scrub with a soft toothbrush and rinse under clean water, making sure to dry the pieces thoroughly.

Routine Jewelry Care While Traveling

Regular care can prevent damage and keep your jewelry in top condition. Here are some habits I’ve adopted:

Taking Jewelry Off Before Bed: I make it a point to remove my jewelry before sleeping to avoid accidental damage or loss.

Storing Jewelry Properly After Use: After wearing, I ensure each piece goes back into its designated spot in my travel organizer. This habit keeps things organized and prevents me from misplacing anything.

Being Mindful of Activities: I’m careful to take off my jewelry during activities that could harm it, like swimming or hiking. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

By following these simple care tips, I’ve managed to keep my jewelry looking great, no matter where my travels take me. A little attention goes a long way in maintaining the beauty and integrity of your cherished pieces.

The best ways to pack jewelry

What’s in your jewelry box? Whether the pieces are special gifts from loved ones or costume jewelry to top off an outfit, you want to make sure they arrive safely. For both travel and moving, packing jewelry properly ensures things stay intact: no broken bracelets, no tangled necklaces and no missing earrings. These tips will help prepare everything for transport.

travel packing jewelry

Packing jewelry step-by-step

No matter why or how you’re moving jewelry, there are a few tricks to help protect things. This video gives some helpful tips whether you’re traveling or moving.

  • Use a jewelry roll for valuable pieces. The compartments keep pieces separate, and its compact size makes it easy to carry.
  • Organize small items with a pill case. Earrings or rings are a great fit for this application.
  • Thread necklaces through a straw or cardboard roll. Trim the straw or roll to fit the necklace. Secure the clasp, and then wrap items in tissue or packing paper for added protection.
  • Keep items secure and separate with re-sealable kitchen wrap. Lay out a piece of wrap, lay jewelry out on half, and fold and press the wrap to hold items in place.
  • Hook earrings through buttons or foam . Tape the backs to keep them from slipping out.
  • Wrap pieces individually in packing paper or zip-top bags. Place these smaller packages in a jewelry box, and then wrap it for transport.

How to pack jewelry for travel

When traveling, there are three main goals for jewelry — organization, protection and easy to pack. Along with the tips above, these are some other travel tips for jewelry:

  • Carry valuables with you, in case your luggage gets lost.
  • If possible, choose one statement piece to wear with everything, and wear it while traveling, so you don’t have to pack it.
  • Use a carabiner or metal O ring to hold rings or bracelets. Clip them on and keep them organized. Place the entire bundle in a zip-top bag so they don’t snag on items in your suitcase.
  • For several pieces, use a tackle box or bead organizer. Most have removable compartments that allow for customizing to fit the jewelry. Place it in the bottom of the suitcase and pack around it.

How to pack jewelry for a move

When it comes to moving, it may be easier to pack items as they are stored. If your jewelry is stored in a box or armoire, then you can easily wrap individual items and move it in the armoire. Protect it like any other piece of furniture: Secure the drawers with stretch wrap and protect the finish with paper padding.

If necklaces and earrings are hung up at home, protect them by using the tips above. For several pairs of earrings, you could poke them through a foam plate (and tape the backs in place), then wrap the entire plate in packing paper and place it in a box. Use the straw/cardboard tube trick to prevent necklaces from tangling during transit, then wrap each one individually and layer them in a box.

How to keep necklaces from tangling in a jewelry box

Once you arrive, several things can be done to keep items from getting damaged. One simple solution is to have one hook per necklace. We’ve seen some creative solutions including using the spiral from a notebook (each loop can hold a necklace) or the head of a rake (each tine can serve as a hook).

If there’s not ample space, separate items as best as you can. Consider using straws or the zip-top bag trick from the video above: Place most of the necklace in the bag and seal the strands separately (keep the clasp out of the bag, so you can hang the necklace.

DIY guide to traveling with jewelry

Traveling means packing, and knowing  how to pack easily and efficiently  is an art and a science. You might already know  what to bring in your carry-on  and  what to pack when the weather is fickle . But what about jewelry? Valuable, meaningful, and easy-to-lose, jewelry is one of the most important things to know how to pack securely while  seeing the world .

If you’re wondering how to pack jewelry for travel without needing to buy anything, click play on the video below, and then read on for even more tips!

Organize small items in a pillbox

The tiny compartments are the perfect size for storing your earrings, rings, pins, and other small items. As an added bonus, you can organize your jewelry to match your planned outfits for every day of your  trip ! (Though if your trip is more than seven days long, you’ll have to get creative.)

Img

Keep necklaces in straws

If your necklaces are thin enough, you can secure them with a straw. Simply unhook your necklace, feed one end through the straw, and secure the clasp. It’ll never get tangled! You can even use a hair tie to secure your necklaces to the pillbox. Just be sure to use a reusable straw instead of a single-use plastic one. Make a jewelry roll with a shirt or travel towel

Who needs to buy a jewelry roll when you’ve already got the materials for a DIY jewelry kit? Start by neatly laying out your jewelry on a shirt or travel towel. Roll up the soft fabric—making sure that no two items are touching one another—until it forms a neat bundle. Use hair ties or rubber bands to secure the ends, and you’re ready to  travel !

How to Pack Jewelry for Travel

travel packing jewelry

When it comes to traveling, jewelry often becomes a matter of concern. With the constant worry of misplacement or potential damage, packing your precious pieces can be quite challenging. At Brad’s Designs & Jewelry, we understand this dilemma and have crafted this guide to help you navigate through the process.

For over three decades, our expertise in handling various materials like gold , silver, platinum, and other metals has taught us a thing or two about caring for jewelry. We’re here to share these insights with you, ensuring your treasured pieces remain safe during your travels.

Storage Options

Choosing the right storage for your jewelry is paramount. Small, compartmentalized boxes or travel-specific jewelry cases are excellent options. They not only keep your jewelry organized but also prevent them from rubbing against each other, avoiding potential scratches or damages.

Soft pouches made from materials like silk or velvet can also be utilized for individual pieces, especially for those that are more delicate or hold sentimental value. Remember, the goal is to keep your jewelry secure and separate to avoid any tangles or harm.

Special Care for Certain Jewelry

Not all jewelry is created equal. Some pieces might require a bit more tender, loving care than others. For instance, jewelry with gemstones, pearls, or diamonds may need extra protection as they are more prone to scratches. Wrapping these pieces in soft cloth before storing them can add an extra layer of security.

Similarly, heirloom pieces or antique jewelry need special attention due to their age and sentimental value. Consider keeping these pieces in individual pouches or separate compartments within your jewelry box.

Packing Tips

When it’s time to pack, always place your jewelry in your carry-on luggage. This ensures that you have full control over where your jewelry goes and reduces the chances of it getting lost or stolen. Another pro tip is to create a detailed list of all the jewelry you’re taking with you. This list can serve as a reference in case any item goes missing or is accidentally left behind.

Additional Considerations

When packing your jewelry, remember to consider the climate of your destination. Humidity can tarnish silver pieces, while extreme temperatures might affect certain stones. It’s always best to do a little research beforehand to ensure you’re fully prepared.

Additionally, consider your itinerary. If your trip involves adventurous activities like hiking or swimming, it might be best to leave your valuable or delicate pieces at home.

Lastly, don’t forget about maintenance. At Brad’s Designs & Jewelry, we offer a range of services, from cleaning to resizing rings, replacing broken clasps, and even repairing watches. Ensure your jewelry is in its best condition before you embark on your journey.

Contact Us for Your Jewelry Needs

Traveling with jewelry doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right preparation and care, you can keep your beautiful pieces safe and secure, no matter where your travels take you. And remember, for all your jewelry needs, Brad’s Designs & Jewelry is here to help. Safe travels!

The Simple Packing Hack To Keep Jewelry From Getting Lost In Your Luggage

I t's no fun arriving at your destination only to find your jewelry has escaped in your bag and gotten tangled around everything. Not only can it be difficult to untangle, but it can also be too easy to lose your precious necklace or earrings when unpacking or repacking your items. If your jewelry becomes loose in your bag, it can also get damaged and break, which is not exactly the kind of thing you want to encounter when you open up your case after a long flight.

You may keep your jewelry in a jewelry box at home, but when you're on the go, you probably don't want a bulky box taking up space in your suitcase or carry-on. Plus, if you're trying to travel light, you may only want to bring a few small pieces of jewelry with you. Luckily, we've got a simple jewelry packing hack that can help you optimize space and keep your jewelry from getting lost in your luggage. All you'll need is a small pouch and a pair of shoes you plan to take with you on your trip.

Read more: The Ultimate Guide To Perfectly Packing For Your Cruise Vacation

Use Your Shoes To Pack Your Jewelry

Many of us are aware of the travel hack where you use your shoes to store items such as socks or scarves. But did you know that you can use your shoes to pack jewelry too? To do this, place each jewelry item that's prone to getting knotted in a small, soft fabric pouch. You may be able to place some items together in one pouch, such as rings and earrings. But for necklaces, it'd be best to package each one separately. Then, seal the pouch and place each one in the end of a closed-toe shoe. For extra security, you might want to gently place a pair of socks in the shoe as well.

Packaging your jewelry in a soft item is a great way to minimize the risk of tangles or breakages when packing . This means that when you arrive at your destination, you can simply remove the pouch from your shoes, open it, and your jewelry will be ready to go.

Other Ways To Keep Your Jewelry Secure

Although placing your jewelry in a small pouch should prevent it from escaping, if you want more protection for your jewelry, there are a few other packing hacks you can try. For necklaces, many travelers swear by the straw packing technique, where you thread one end of your necklace through a drinking straw and fasten it at the other end. This will prevent the chain from getting knotted together and will make it far easier to remove your jewelry from your luggage when you reach your destination.

Another packing hack is to lay your jewelry out on a soft towel or scarf and then roll it up. You can then fasten the scarf at each end with a rubber band or hair tie. You'll create a DIY travel case that will keep your jewelry secure and can be easily unfastened once you reach your destination.

Traveling This Summer? What Jewelry To Take and What To Leave at Home

Jewelry for Travel

It’s summer — the season of longer days, sun-kissed skin, and travel plans! The summer months go hand-in-hand with vacation, but for less seasoned travelers, it also presents many questions.

One common vacation conundrum is the issue of jewelry :  what to bring with you, what to leave at home, and how best to transport whatever items you plan on packing.

Traveling with Valuable Items

A general rule of thumb is to leave valuable items (whether monetary or emotional) at home. Traveling is an opportunity to get away, so don’t bring along valuables that will cause you unnecessary stress . You can never predict when a stone might come loose from its setting, and there’s countless other reasons not to travel with valuables.

If you’re taking a particularly outdoor-focused vacation, whether it’s relaxing on the beach or hiking through the rainforest, keep in mind that sandy beaches, as well as assorted flora and fauna are prime spaces for swallowing up jewelry, never to be seen again.

Even if you’re traveling abroad and staying at a hotel, there’s no guarantee your jewelry will be safe. It’s best to leave the pricey stuff at home. This extends especially to wedding and engagement rings. Even if you’re not concerned with losing a ring on a scenic vista, flashy, diamond jewelry can attract unwanted attention while traveling, whether from hotel staff or pickpockets. You can turn a ring so only the band shows or tuck necklaces inside your sweater, but for peace of mind, leaving it at home is the best option.

Some jewelers recommend that couples invest in a plain, less expensive travel band to swap out for their wedding bands and engagement rings. This way you can still wear a wedding ring, but not risk losing a financially and emotionally priceless piece of jewelry. This can even extend to look-a-like rings with white quartz or crystal in place of diamonds and other expensive stones.

If it’s killing you to leave it behind, consider that a vacation is a perfect time for you to send meaningful pieces away to the jeweler for cleaning or repair. They can spruce it up and make sure everything is in top condition while also keeping it safe and secure during your trip out of town.

Practicality

Packing jewelry should also be about practicality. Jewelry can quickly start to weigh your suitcase down, so you should aim to bring only a few neutral items that will pair with multiple outfits. Consider small hoop earrings or studs, either plain silver or gold, or pearls that will match various ensembles.

Feel free to pack one or two flashy items to spice up a special outfit for a night out, but otherwise stick to the essentials. Be smart about what you pack and only include jewelry you’re sure you’ll wear. Better yet, stick with one set of items that you can wear when you fly.

Most importantly, don’t choose items that are clunky or likely to tangle. Large chunky bracelets will take up too much space in your luggage, when a simple, neutral chain-link will suffice (same goes for statement necklaces). However, you may prefer one or two large statement necklaces to daintier pieces of jewelry, as the thinner the chain, the more likely it is to tangle itself into a large knot in your luggage.

Finally, if you want to bring a wider variety of jewelry, consider making rings your go-to item. They’re small, easy to pack, and tangle-resistant.

Safety Tips

Whether you’re traveling with valuables or not, there are several safety precautions you can take to help keep your jewelry safe.

  • Insurance –Before you leave, make sure all of your jewelry is insured for travel. This way, if the worst happens and something does get lost or stolen, you’re protected for the full replacement value of your items.
  • Carry-On –Never pack your jewelry in checked luggage. There’s a high likelihood it could get lost or stolen when your bag is searched with almost no recourse for finding it. Keep your valuables on your person at all times when flying. Your jewelry should always be with you–never leave it unattended in a car or suitcase.
  • Use the Hotel Safe — Your hotel should be a secure environment, but just in case. It’s best to keep all jewelry secure in your room safe. If there isn’t a safe in the room, ask at the front desk, as many hotels have safes for guest off the lobby.
  • Make a List –Write out a detailed list of all the items you’re traveling with so you can keep track of everything. Travel with one list and leave the other at home, so that you have two copies in case of an emergency.

Packing Tips

Now that you’ve decided what items you’re going to bring, you have to figure out how best to pack them so they won’t get lost among your clothes or tangled in a knot. There are numerous ways to travel with jewelry in a hassle-free manner. Many companies sell jewelry pouches, boxes, and rolls specifically designed for traveling.

But there are also several DIY methods if you don’t feel like investing in one of those. For necklace chains, use plastic straws along the chain to keep the chain protected and prevent tangles. Earrings can easily get lost in a bag, so stick a pair of studs through the holes in a button or use a Styrofoam plate for multiple pairs. Pill boxes, rolled up towels, and toilet paper tubes make great storage implements that you can find at home. Wrap necklaces and bracelets around a towel or toilet paper tube, and then punch your earrings into it.

Summer travel should be a period of vacation bliss. Make sure it stays that way by packing jewelry and handling it in a way that keeps things low maintenance and allows you to have peace of mind about your valuable items.

Alaska cruise packing list: 36 must-have items.

Your cruise packing list for Alaska will look a little bit different than the one you'd use for the Caribbean.

Alaska Cruise Packing List

Stay warm and dry in Alaska by ensuring you've packed the right gear.

Alaska is one of the most stunning places to visit on Earth. The vast pristine wilderness, ever-changing landscapes and opportunity to view wildlife – including bear, moose, Dall sheep, caribou, wolves, and marine mammals such as orcas and humpback whales – are just a few of the reasons it's one of the most popular cruise destinations.

An Alaska cruise , however, can be difficult to pack for with big swings in temperatures, rainy days in the forecast and even experiencing four seasons in one day ashore. You'll need a strategic plan to pack for your trip especially if you're cruising during the colder months of April and October at the tail ends of the Alaska cruising season . U.S. News has compiled a list of essential items and ones you'll be glad you brought to round out your cruise packing list.

  • For the cabin
  • For the ship and onshore excursions
  • For the journey

(Note: Any mentioned prices were accurate at the time this article was published; they may fluctuate.)

For the cabin

Portable humidifier.

It gets cold in Alaska, especially at nighttime, so you may need to turn on the heat in your stateroom. If you've traveled in the winter on a cruise ship, you'll know that the dry warm air combined with the airtight seal in the cabin can cause several issues, including difficulty sleeping and dry skin. The MOVTIP Portable Mini Humidifier ( less than $30 on Amazon ) is compact and lightweight at 9.5 ounces, so you can easily pack it into your carry-on or checked luggage . It has two mist modes, acts as a nightlight in your cabin and has an automatic shut-off when the water level is too low.

Magnetic hooks

A fun fact: The walls of a cruise ship are made of metal, so you can use them for extra hanging space when you bring along magnetic hooks for the trip. There are plenty of plain silver magnets on Amazon to choose from, but DIYMAG heavy-duty magnetic hooks are available in bold colors like green, red and purple. That way, each person can have their own color-coded hook. The extra hanging space will come in handy with all the layers you'll need for your cruise. You'll also appreciate having the hooks for wet gear after shore excursions .

Motion sickness remedies

Sea-Bands pack and bands in case against white background.

Sea-Bands, which you can find on Amazon for less than $15 , are a must-have item if you're prone to motion sickness. A drug-free alternative to medicines like Dramamine, they use an acupressure point to minimize nausea and vomiting. You never know when you'll encounter rough seas, especially if you're on a small vessel . You can even get motion sickness riding in one of the whale watching boats, so it's best to come prepared. Be sure to start wearing the bands before you get on the ship.

If you need something stronger than the Sea-Bands to quell the nausea, Dramamine has a less drowsy version that's recommended by pharmacists. Another motion sickness alternative is to wear the prescription scopolamine transdermal patch, which lasts up to three days, behind your ear. Ginger chews are an option for mild cases of upset stomach; you can purchase a pack of them on Amazon for $5 .

It's a good idea to keep moisturizing eye drops in your toiletry bag , backpack or handbag, especially if you're prone to dry eye. The cabins on the ship can get warm and arid, as mentioned above, particularly when you need to turn on the heat. Systane on-the-go vials are an excellent choice for hydration. Lumify is another option if your eyes have a problem with redness.

Alaskan cruises are a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many travelers, so you'll want to record every moment of your adventure. Rifle Paper Co. sells sets of three stitched notebooks with beautiful floral and nature designs. Each book has 64 ruled pages and gold foil accents. There's even a Bon Voyage-themed set that's perfect for journaling your cruise travels.

Wrinkle release spray

Travel irons are not permitted on cruise ships, so a travel-size bottle of Downy's Wrinkle Release Plus spray comes in handy for getting rid of wrinkles. It also acts as an odor eliminator and static remover. To remove wrinkles, it works best if you spritz the garment first and then hang it in the shower so the steam can work its magic, too. For tougher wrinkles in fabrics like linen, you might need to send the garment out for pressing. If you do, be sure to give it at least a 24-hour turnaround time if you're planning to wear the item on a specific evening.

Travel-size bathroom sprays

There are several companies that make travel-size bathroom sprays, including Poo-Pourri, Fresh Wave and Flushie. They are all available on Amazon. If you prefer aromas beyond the traditional lavender vanilla and citrus scents, Poo-Pourri sells its 2-ounce packable sprays in pumpkin spice, apple, coconut and more.

Over-the-door organizer

It's best to stay organized when you're on a cruise, especially if you're not traveling solo . Storage space is limited in the closet and in the bathroom, so you'll want to keep your items separate. An over-the-door organizer, such as Bagsmart's hanging toiletry bag ( less than $30 on Amazon ), is an excellent choice for securing smaller items, such as jewelry, lip balm and travel-size sunscreen. The clear, zippered pockets are also large enough to accommodate full-size moisturizers and other makeup items.

Electronics organizer

Open Bagsmart Electronics Organizer fills with cords against white background.

Courtesy of Bagsmart

Keep your cords, battery chargers and any items for your camera – like SD cards – in one place with this electronics organizer from Bagsmart . It's easy to pack in your carry-on and even carry in your backpack or daypack if you'll need access to some of the items during the day. Everything is visible, zipped up and secure so you won't lose anything either in the room or in transit.

Flip-flops are great to have to walk around the stateroom, especially if your accommodations don't come with a plush robe and slippers. It's nice to shed heavier boots and shoes after exploring outside and have something easy to slip on your feet. Reef makes all types of flip-flops, and you can purchase the basic styles on Amazon for less than $35 a pair .

For the ship and onshore excursions

Disinfecting wipes.

If you don't like the tacky feeling that hand sanitizers can leave on your hands, consider packing antibacterial wipes such as Wet Ones . They kill 99.99% of the germs, so they're also useful for wiping down surfaces (think tables in the buffet restaurant). These wipes are perfect to pack for an excursion or to use while enjoying the ship if you want a quick refresh.

It doesn't have to be sunny outside for you to need protection from the sun. You'll be outdoors a lot in Alaska and will want to use sunscreen with at least an SPF 15, as recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Reef-safe sunscreen is better for you, the environment and the wildlife as it eliminates the use of certain chemicals and ingredients. Save the Reef's website has a list of reef-safe and ocean-friendly brands that include: All Good ( available in travel-size tubes on Amazon ), Mama Kuleana and Badger ( also sold on Amazon ).

Insect repellent

The height of mosquito season runs from the second week of June to the end of July. Pesky bugs are not typically as bad in the places where most tourists visit, but that will depend on the type of cruise you take. DEET-based sprays, like Cutter Backwoods Repellent are the most effective against mosquitoes, but there are alternatives. Badger makes an organic DEET-free repellent with lemongrass and citronella, and it comes in a travel-size.

Hiking poles

Lightweight collapsible hiking poles are important to pack, especially if you're going on adventurous treks looking for wildlife in the woods. Covacure's set of two trekking poles costs about $35 on Amazon . They're made of aircraft-grade 7075 aluminum, so they're strong, and they fold down to less than 14 inches each. They also have foam handles, three types of rubber tips for the poles and adjustable wrists straps. The set comes with a carry bag.

A dry bag is essential – particularly for water-based shore excursions – if you're carrying a camera, a cellphone or other items that can't get wet. HEETA's 5-liter waterproof dry bag ( on Amazon for about $15 ) comes in a wide selection of colors. There are also larger sizes, depending on your needs. The clear plastic allows you to see what's inside, and you can carry the bag over the shoulder or as a backpack.

Rain jacket and pants

The weather can be unpredictable in Alaska, with rain occurring at any time. In the Inside Passage, August and September are typically the rainiest months. In the Southwest part of the state, which includes Katmai National Park, it rains nearly half the month from May to September. If you want to go, travelers during those months especially will want to pack some rain protection for the outdoors; to stay dry, invest in fabric that is water-repellent and not just water-resistant. Columbia has a selection of rain jackets and rain pants with everything from lightweight packable shells to pieces with fleece lining for colder weather.

Silk thermal long underwear

Silk thermals are a great base layer for the weather in Alaska when you need extra warmth. The 100% silk interlock fabric is lightweight, breathable and thin enough to fit under other layers. It also naturally wicks moisture. L.L.Bean's collection of silk thermals includes tops and bottoms for both men and women.

Mid-layers are also known as insulating layers, which include fleece and windproof or insulated jackets. These garments should be breathable, quick-drying and able to keep you warm by trapping body heat without making you feel cold or clammy. Helly Hansen makes a lightweight, zippered Polartec Daybreaker Fleece Jacket for women and men that comes in a variety of colors. If you would rather wear a jacket for a mid-layer, the Gore-Tex website has a large selection of windproof and insulated jackets in collaboration with brands like Marmot, Patagonia and Quicksilver.

Waterproof shoes and boots

Merrell's comfortable shoes and boots are ideal to pack for your Alaskan adventure. If you want a shoe for walking, the Moab Speed Gore-Tex shoe is lightweight, durable, waterproof and made with FloatPro Foam to cushion your feet. It's also available in wider sizes. The Moab 3 Mid Waterproof offers more stability as a hiking boot. It also has extra features for better traction on rugged terrain and an air cushion for maximum shock absorption. Waterproof boots from XTRATUF are another option to consider if you're going to be fishing on small boats on a pre- or post-cruisetour in Alaska.

Read: The Top Walking Shoes for Travel

You'll want several T-shirts for relaxing in your stateroom and layering under your clothes. An old favorite are the Pima cotton, short-sleeved crewnecks from L.L. Bean . They're super soft and wash well. They also make a long-sleeve version that is mostly made of Supima cotton but features modal and spandex for additional comfort.

Bathing suit

While you may not go swimming ashore in Alaska, there's a good chance that you'll want to check out the pools or spa while you're on the ship. In that case, you'll be glad you brought a swimsuit to fully experience the thermal suites available on lines like Celebrity Cruises , Princess Cruises , Viking and Holland America Line .

Warm hat and gloves

Be sure to bring a hat and gloves for the chilly mornings ashore. For a lightweight and packable option, consider Lands End microfleece gloves for men and women , as well as a beanie . Or, if you prefer a natural fiber, a wool beanie and gloves from Smartwool will keep you toasty warm.

Fleece-lined pants

Packing a pair of warm-lined pants for cooler days is essential. The REI Co-Op Sahara Pants are U.S. News' top travel pants pick . There's also a wide selection of fleece-lined leggings and pants on Amazon, including Baleaf fleece-lined leggings . These pants essentially include a base layer, so you won't need silk thermals on days when you wear them.

Packable jacket

A packable lightweight travel jacket is another essential item when traveling to Alaska. You can layer clothes underneath in the morning as you head outdoors, then remove the jacket as it gets warmer throughout the day. The Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket is a top pick based on thousands of reviews – and it's windproof and water-resistant. It also comes in a wide selection of colors.

Casual clothes

You'll want to bring lightweight layers for daytime excursions off the ship. Columbia has a great selection of nearly wrinkle-free travel pants and bottoms , along with a variety of tops and hoodies . You can mix and match these pieces throughout the week to keep packing at a minimum. In the evenings, you'll want to dress up a bit more in smart casual attire. It's best to check with your cruise line to see what's permitted in the evenings (for example, if men need a jacket to dine in a specialty restaurant), especially if you're on a luxury cruise ship .

Formal clothes and themed evening attire

Some cruise lines, such as Holland America Line, still have formal evenings. It's not required to dress up, but many women wear cocktail attire and men don their suits for the evening. You'll also want to check with your cruise line to see if there are any theme parties on your voyage. If you're on a family-friendly voyage with Disney Cruise Line , you may have a "Freezing the Night Away" theme party with Anna and Elsa and the other characters from "Frozen." Look online or check with your cruise company to see what clothes you need to bring to join in the fun on your cruise.

Reusable water bottle

Ditch the plastic and pack a reusable water bottle that you can fill up at onboard water stations before heading off the ship. Amazon has plenty of options to choose from, including colorful soft silicone stainless steel bottles from Ello Cooper in three sizes that come with a straw, a handle and a leakproof locking lid.

Lightweight folding daypack

The Zomake folding daypack will become a regular item in your suitcase, no matter where you go. The 30-liter size weighs about 12 ounces and folds up into a compact pouch. The nylon construction is durable and there are plenty of exterior pockets – there's even an interior pocket with deep storage for items like a wallet or phone. Two mesh side pockets accommodate reusable water bottles. The bag is available in a variety of bold colors for less than $25 on Amazon.

Lightweight mirrorless camera and lens

Today's smartphones have impressive cameras, but most phone cameras won't have the same clarity and quality as a regular camera. If you don't want to carry a heavy DSLR camera and lens around on your Alaskan adventure, there are other options. The Canon EOS R10 is an excellent choice for a lightweight mirrorless camera along with the EF-M 18-150 mm lens. You can also purchase a mount adaptor for the camera that will allow you to use your other EF and EF-S Canon lenses.

While you may have some up-close encounters with wildlife – such as whales coming alongside your boat on a whale watching excursion – most of the wildlife viewing will be at a distance. A good pair of lightweight binoculars is key if you don't want to miss views like bears fishing for salmon along a river or a moose wading through a faraway lake. Bushnell's H20 8X42 binoculars are waterproof and fog-free.

For the journey

Carry-on bag.

The type of carry-on you use will depend on how you pack. If you're a minimalist and able to stow everything you need for a week in Alaska in a carry-on, then a larger carry-on, such as the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Expandable Spinner , is a great choice. If you're checking a bag and don't need as much space in a carry-on, consider bringing a smaller option like the 21.5-inch Cargo Hauler XT from Eagle Creek . This water-repellent wheeled duffel bag comes in four colors including charcoal and red.

Garment bag

Delsey makes a checked-size rolling garment bag that will keep your hanging clothes organized and wrinkle-free. It has seven pockets (one exterior and six interior) for storing folded clothes and other items. There are also two compartments that will fit smaller pairs of shoes. You can hang the bag in the stateroom with the door hook if you prefer to leave the items in the bag. Another trick to ensuring wrinkle-free items is to cover your clothes on the hanger with plastic bags like those you'd get at the dry cleaner.

Packing cubes

Packing cubes keep clothes neat and organized and mostly wrinkle-free. Luggage brands like Ricardo Beverly Hills and Eagle Creek make well-rated packing cubes and organizers. You can also purchase sets of packing cubes on Amazon, such as the Veken Set 8-piece set , a U.S. News top packing cube pick .

Travel pillow and quilted wrap

Trtl Travel Pillow in gray against neutral background.

You'll want a travel pillow to take a nap on your flight en route to your Alaskan cruise. The unique design of the Trtl Travel Pillow supports your head so you don't wake up with neck pain, and the fabric is super soft. It comes in a travel pouch with a hook so you can attach it to your carry-on bag. If you get chilly on flights, Trtl also makes a new packable quilted mini wrap that weighs less than 13 ounces. It comes in a pouch and even has pockets to keep your hands warm or to stash your valuables (such as a passport, wallet or phone) while you nod off.

Medications

Keep your medications with you in a carry-on bag or personal item (such as a handbag) just in case your checked bag is lost or delayed. Request smaller bottles for prescriptions from your pharmacist, so they're easier to pack, and make sure they're clearly labeled should you be questioned by TSA. You'll also want to bring any over-the-counter items you may need, such as antacids or antibiotic ointments. It's possible to buy these items on the ship, but they are expensive.

Collapsible duffel

If you're a shopper and plan to bring home souvenirs to friends and family, you might want an extra bag to pack up the items for the return trip home. Look for a collapsible duffel bag that will fit into your suitcase. There are many options on Amazon, including the Gonex Foldable Duffel . At the end of the cruise, you can offload your dirty clothes to the duffel bag so you'll have space in your suitcase for T-shirts, moose stuffed animals, Alaskan specialties like Captain Jim's Alaska smoked salmon and other memorabilia from your adventure.

Book an Alaska cruise on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

What not to pack for your cruise

Small appliances.

Travel irons and steamers are not permitted on cruise ships due to the fire hazard. As mentioned above, there are several other ways to prevent wrinkles in your clothes. You're also not allowed to bring coffee makers and other small electrical items. In addition, don't bring a hair dryer as they are usually provided in your stateroom.

Alcohol and spirits

Some cruise lines permit guests to bring one or two bottles of wine or Champagne on board the ship, but hard alcohol is almost always not allowed. If you have a beverage package or are sailing on an all-inclusive line , alcoholic beverages will be covered. Check with your cruise line before you sail to see what you can bring on board the ship.

CBD and marijuana

Cannabis is illegal in the U.S., and many cruise ships do not allow any form of CBD, including gummies, oils and lotions. It's best to play it safe and leave these items at home. You don't want to risk having the items thrown away or, in the worst case, not being allowed to board the ship.

I used this travel pack as my carry-on for an eight-day trip — it’s officially the best bag I’ve ever traveled with

travel packing jewelry

At this point in my life, I pride myself on being somewhat of an experienced traveler. In the last six months alone, I’ve been to five different countries, so it’s safe to say I do it often enough to know a thing or two about flight prep.

With airlines cracking down on personal items and prices soaring for checked bags, a solid carry-on travel pack that meets flight criteria is more important than ever before — and as a result, I’ve become extremely picky with my bag choices.

After plenty of baggage failures, I finally found a great one: The Cotopaxi 35L Travel Pack. I chose this pick as my carry-on for an eight-day trip to Guatemala after seeing it all over JFK Airport in New York City recently. I just had to give it a try.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack

Allpa 35L Travel Pack

Allpa 35L Travel Pack

What is the cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack.

When I first received this travel pack, my first thought was that it was the perfect hybrid between a suitcase and a backpack. The Allpa 35 opens up in a clamshell-style, like your typical suitcase, and has three total internal mesh compartments: one large compartment on the right side and one subdivided compartment (with three sections) on the left. It also has a padded laptop and tablet sleeve , with shortcut zippers to the main compartment for easy access while on the go.

As the name suggests, this travel pack has a 35L capacity, so it’s compatible with most carry-on airline standards . I flew on a budget airline for my trip to Guatemala, and I was worried I wouldn’t get to use the bag as a carry-on since it appeared rather large (I really packed this thing to the brim!), but I had no issues at all.

What I like about the product

It packs way more than you’d think.

According to the brand, this is “the ultimate adventure travel pack, ideal for three to five days away.” This is a claim I can confirm was slightly on the conservative side, considering I packed for a full eight days in this bag. While Guatemala has a warmer climate — hence why the clothing I packed really only consisted of smaller items like shorts and T-shirts — I did go on a major hike that required more gear, and I was able to still fit all my essentials in this bag.

That said, I think if I had traveled to a colder climate that necessitated larger, thicker clothing, I might not have been able to fit eight days worth of apparel — so keep that in mind while packing!

travel packing jewelry

The minor details have a major impact

When it comes to this bag, trust me when I say it’s  all  in the details. It has anti-theft zippers, which gives me peace of mind while walking through crowded airports or train stations. It also has a top zippered pocket so you can easily access  essentials  like your wallet or passport while on the go.

For the adventurer, there are also carabiner loops for clipping on any extra gear you may need on your trip (i.e. hiking shoes, additional bags, etc.). But my favorite detail? The padded straps. I overpacked this bag when I traveled to Central America, and it was  heavy . The straps were thick and comfortable, and they didn’t dig into my shoulders no matter how much weight was in the bag. The removable hip straps also helped with support while carrying a heavier pack.

What to consider

While I find it hard to come up with any downsides to this travel pack , some might find that its lack of external pockets is a bit inconvenient for those who like to keep most things super accessible. This bag also doesn’t have a designated water bottle sleeve, but I guess you could hook a water bottle to the carabiner loops if you really wanted to.

Ultimately, this bag seems to combine the comfort, accessibility and flexibility of a backpack with the spacious aspects of a suitcase. Whether you’re on a lengthy trip in Central America or a weekend getaway in Boston, this bag will have you covered — and I’ll be using it on every trip I have planned from here on out. In fact, I’m going to Iceland soon, and you can rest assured this bag will be coming with me.

How to Pack Light When You're Only Traveling With a Carry-On

By Karthika Gupta

Packing for a trip always feels like a dance between art and science—and attempting to pack light complicates things even further. As a travel journalist, I often find myself on the road several times a month—sometimes for weeks at a time navigating various modes of transportation. This means being self-sufficient with my luggage is key. I also don’t want to be concerned about lost luggage when I travel, so I opt to bring only a carry-on whenever I can. My mantra while packing for any trip, whether it's a domestic weekend getaway or a weeklong international adventure, is that every piece of gear has to be multi-functional to maximize space. Below, my tried-and-true tips for packing light with only a carry-on.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Our best tips for packing light:

Choose the right luggage, don't skip the packing cubes.

  • Opt for multi-functional fabrics

Pick versatile pairs of shoes

  • Adjust your body care routine

Travel hacks are a game-changer

A key consideration for any trip is choosing the right luggage to fit all your essentials without weighing you down. If you're traveling with just a carry-on-sized bag, you want it to be lightweight yet roomy—expandable options are always helpful. My go-to is the Monos Carry-On Plus, a 7.8-pound hard-shell suitcase sized to fit in overhead bins. The wheels have a 360-spin, making it a breeze to maneuver in tight spaces, and the side handle makes it easy to lift into the overhead bin and in a rental car. The padded front compartment fits my 15-inch laptop, a scarf, and a book in there easily. The suitcase comes with an antimicrobial laundry bag and two shoe bags that further help with packing and organization.

Another smart carry-on option is the Cotopaxi Allpa Roller Bag. The hybrid look of a hardcover back and adjustable softcover front brings the right amount of support and expandability of a traditional carry-on suitcase. It only has two wheels but when I saw how easily the bag moved on different surfaces, I was hooked. Cotopaxi’s fun and vibrant colors also make these suitcases easily identifiable among a sea of like-looking bags at the airport.

Next up: choosing a functional personal item . I paired my suitcase with the Chelsea Backpack from Antler. As a professional photographer, I always travel with my gear and I find the Chelsea is spacious enough to pack my camera, an extra lens, and in-flight essentials: snacks, my Otterbox 3-in-1 MagSafe charging station that helped cut down on extra cords, and my insulated Camelbak water bottle . It even has a zipped, padded laptop area with a separate slip pocket for a tablet. The backpack’s trolley sleeve is a lifesaver, slipping onto my rolling suitcase and allowing me to keep one hand free. And I always pack my Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole tote as an extra bag (for souvenirs or as a daypack for a quick hike). It folds down into a small pouch, making it both packable and functional.

travel packing jewelry

Anyone who struggles with optimizing space when traveling knows that packing cubes are the ultimate solution. Not only are they perfect for organization, but compression ones like these from Monos and Béis save space in your bag. I routinely use about three to five cubes and organize my essentials by category. The bigger cube is for bulky items like jeans, pants, and sweatshirts, the medium is for shirts, and the smaller one is for undergarments and socks. The clear-view window on the Monos packing cubes allows me to see what's inside at a glance, making it easier to get ready. I also carry an extra one to separate dirty laundry on my return trip home.

travel packing jewelry

Opt for lightweight, multi-functional fabrics

I will admit that choosing the right clothes for a multi-week trip is the most challenging part of packing, especially when dealing with different climates. My Duer jeans are my favorite denim. With the right amount of stretch, softness, comfort, and a water-repellent fabric, I wear them on planes, around town, and even hiking. My top picks are these fleece-lined relaxed Girlfriend fit for flights, and the mid-rise performance slim straight for backup. Another new favorite is the Freeflex Roll-Up pants from Kühl. The roll-up feature quickly converts it into a capri, increasing the usability. Plus, they are quick-drying, moisture-managing, and water-resistant.

For daily wear, I pack a few classic, mix-and-match pieces from Prana in neutral colors. Foundation rib tanks and simple short-sleeve tees are versatile, comfortable, and perfect for layering. I recently discovered hemp fabric, a natural fiber that is breathable, antibacterial, and seems to get softer with every wash. Adding Jungmaven tees to my travel wardrobe was a no-brainer because it wicks moisture away from the skin keeping clothes odor free longer so you can get more wear from your tees. A few moisture-wicking UPF 50+ bras that double as sports bras, merino wool breathable natural briefs from Ibex , and Comrad compression socks complete my essentials.

As a runner from the Midwest, I can never pass up the opportunity to tackle trails wherever I go. My Hoka short-sleeved performance tee and multi-pocket jogger tights from Oiselle are ideal because of their quick-drying fabric, which means I don’t need sweatshirts to keep me warm while running outside.

Keeping up with the theme of packing multi-purpose clothing, I chose between two outerwear pieces depending on the season—the Stretchdown light vest from Mountain Hardwear or a Silent Down Jacket from Patagonia. The vest is a lightweight layering piece that packs down to a pouch for convenience. The jacket, which I wear on the plane (another tip: don't pack your bulkiest pieces; wear them in transit), is incredibly soft, warm enough for 30 to 40-degree Fahrenheit weather, thanks to the down insulation, and not too technical—the perfect outerwear for a nice dinner.

travel packing jewelry

Deciding on what shoes to bring on any trip is always a bit tricky, but generally, you want to go classic and neutral. Because of space restrictions, I opted for a white walking shoe that would go with any outfit (worn on the plane) and packed my lightweight gym shoes as a backup. Clae’s white vegan leather sneakers have traveled with me across continents and continues to hold form even after hours of walking everywhere. For my running and training routines, I lean on my Agility Peak 5 running shoe from Merrell. It performs flawlessly on gravel and concrete and after getting caught unprepared in a sudden downpour one too many times, I always choose the Gore-Tex waterproof style. A cute pair of lightweight Tevas sandals that are also waterproof and breathable round out my footwear choices.

travel packing jewelry

Don’t sacrifice your body care routine—just adjust it

After a lot of trial and error over years of extensive travel, I finally curated just the right selection of products for my Dopp kit . The key is to trim down your routine (and packing list) with multi-purpose products that still get the job done and leave you feeling refreshed. Everist plant-based waterless shower travel essentials are a game changer and the travel-size tins save a lot of space. I also recently switched to waterless moisturizers and lotion bars for travel after having to ditch many creams and bottles at security because of liquid restrictions. My go-tos are Glow Face Stone solid face moisturizer and Forest Sone lotion bar from Kate McLeod. And all this packs away in my carry-on-friendly Monos Metro toiletry case.

Image may contain: Pottery, and Jar

After traveling thousands of miles with just a carry-on, there are a few hacks I always rely on that make a huge difference to my overall outlook on traveling as lightly as possible. I always clip a few carabiners to my backpack or suitcase (if possible). In a pinch, these hold nicknacks like an extra jacket, a water bottle, or my sandals if I am running out of space. A buff is a must and an easy way to protect your face, neck, and head from the elements. It also acts as a neck warmer and mask on planes. And my Sea to Summit inflatable two-ounce camping pillow has been a lifesaver during many unscheduled airport overnights thanks to cancellations and delays—I never leave home without it.

The best packing cubes to save space and keep you organized

These travel cubes will keep your suitcase in order, whether you’re going on a short getaway or a round-the-world adventure.

Whether you’re packing for a weekend getaway or planning an around-the-world adventure, packing cubes can help streamline the packing process. Packing cubes are bags that come in different sizes in a set. They can help organize clothing and save room in your suitcase. Frequent traveler Kayli King uses packing bags daily to keep clothes organized in her van while traveling. “Honestly, after traveling so long, I can’t imagine not using them,” she says.

After talking to King, we compared packing bags, looking for durable travel cubes with functional designs and a wide variety of sizes. Our top overall pick is the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes. Compression zippers, handles, and a low price tag make this set the best all around.

Our picks for the best packing cubes for travel

The best packing cubes for travel, best overall: gonex compression packing cubes.

travel packing jewelry

Buy it now on   Amazon

Why we like it:   The Gonex Compression Packing Cubes are our choice for the best overall packing cubes. Despite being one of the more affordable travel cube sets on this list, these compression bags have plenty of features, including ripstop nylon, reinforced seams, and handles. They compress via double zippers that pull the edges of the travel packing bag together. The packing cubes can hold everything from socks to jackets and are designed to fit together like puzzle pieces. They’re also available in over 10 colors.

Keep in mind:   These packing cubes unzip only halfway, so you have to stuff your clothes inside rather than lay them flat. Some reviewers note that the compression zippers are difficult for people with arthritis or reduced mobility.

Product details: Size: 4-piece set: 9.8 x 7.5 x 3.54 inches (small), 11.8 x 8.9 x 3.54 inches (medium), 14.5 x 10.6 x 3.54 inches (large), and 17.3 x 13 x 3.54 inches (extra large) | Material:   Ripstop nylon | Weight: 12 ounces (set)

Best for traveling light: Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate Cube Set

travel packing jewelry

Buy it now at   Backcountry

Why we like it: At 4.2 ounces, the Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate Cube Set is half the weight of other packing cubes on this list, but they’re far from flimsy. They’re made of ripstop polyester and have “self-repairing” zippers—if a gap opens in the chain, you can slide one of the zippers over it to close it. Eagle Creek also offers a warranty that covers fabric tears and zippers. Because they’re lightweight and sturdy, these travel cubes are great for hikers and campers who want to organize their backpacks.

Keep in mind: The set includes only three smaller-sized travel cubes. While great for backpacks and carry-ons, you may want bigger packing cubes for checked luggage.

Product details: Size:   3-piece set: 4.5 x 7.5 x 2.5 inches (extra small), 7.25 x 10 x 3.25 inches (small), and 10 x 14.25 x 3.25 inches (medium) | Material:   Ripstop polyester | Weight:   4.2 ounces (set)

Best for overpackers: REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube Set

travel packing jewelry

Buy it now at   REI

Why we like it:   The packing cubes in the REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube Set are the opposite of compression bags. Each cube has a second zipper that, when unzipped, increases its width to six inches—double the size of other packing bags on this list. They’re designed to last with ripstop polyester treated with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish. The packing cubes also meet the Bluesign criteria, the highest environmental standard for sustainable textile manufacturing.

Keep in mind:   REI Co-op recently updated its packing cubes, and some buyers believe the quality has suffered as a result. Third-party reviews mention thin material, unreinforced zippers, and mesh that snags.

Product details: Size:   3-piece set: 8 x 6 x 3 inches (small), 12 x 8 x 3 inches (medium), and 14.5 x 10.5 x 3 inches (large) | Material:   Ripstop nylon, polyester mesh | Weight: 8.3 ounce (set)

Best upcycled option: Cotopaxi Cubo Packing Cube Bundle

travel packing jewelry

Why we like it:   The brightly colored Cotopaxi Cubo Packing Cube Bundle is an upcycled option you can feel good about. The packing bags are made of 100-percent repurposed nylon and mesh. Kayli King likes that the mesh panels allow your things to air out and that you can hang them up by their handles.

Cotopaxi’s sustainability initiatives extend beyond its packing cubes. The company says that 94 percent of its products use repurposed, recycled, or responsible materials. They also offer programs to repair items and trade them in to avoid landfills.

Keep in mind:   Despite its competitive price, this bundle comes with only three packing cubes. The size range is small compared to other packing cube sets. However, King prefers this set for longer trips.

Product details: Size: 3-piece set: 7 x 8 x 2 inches (2-liter bag), 6 x 11.5 x 3 inches (3-liter bag), 10 x 11.5 x 5 inches (10-liter bag) | Material:   100 percent repurposed nylon and mesh | Weight: 9 ounces (set)

Best style: Calpak Packing Cubes Set

travel packing jewelry

Buy it now at   Calpak

Why we like it:   While many packing cubes seem to favor function over fashion, the Calpak Packing Cubes Set balances both. The packing bags come in over 20 colors, with patterns like “cheetah” and “lime viper.” They’re durable, with thick polyester sides and mesh covers that let you see inside. Each packing cube has a zippered pocket for smaller essentials and an ID tag to write down the contents. If five travel cubes aren’t enough, you can buy additional Calpak travel organizers, like shoe bags and laptop totes.

Keep in mind:   The Calpak Packing Cube set is by far the heaviest and most expensive option on this list. You may want lighter packing cubes if you travel with just a carry-on or are concerned about overweight luggage.

Product details: Size:   5-piece set: 13 x 10 x 1.5 inches (envelope), 12 x 8.8 x 3 inches (small x 2), 5 x 11 x 3 inches (medium), 17 x 12 x 3 inches (large) | Material: Polyester and mesh | Weight: 1 pound, 12.8 ounces (set)

Best set: Tripped Checked Bag Set

travel packing jewelry

Why we like it:   The Tripped Checked Bag Set has a travel cube for almost every packing need. The set includes seven packing bags, including two extra large sizes, a slim cube, a shoe bag, and a roll-top laundry bag. Mix and match the travel cubes to fit your suitcase and packing needs. Most of the packing cubes in the Checked Bag Set also have a compression feature. Plus, they come in a wide range of colors and an illustrated set featuring national parks.

Keep in mind:   While the packing cubes are made from a ripstop blend, reviewers mention that the material and stitching feel thin and flimsy. Some of the travel cubes don’t unzip all the way, making packing more difficult.

Product details: Size: 6-piece set: 12.5 x 6.5 x 6.5 inches (shoe bag), 12.5 x 4.5 x 3 inches (slim cube), 21 x 11.5 x 0.1 inches (laundry bag), 10 x 7 x 4 inches (small), 14 x 10 x 4 inches (large), 16 x 12 x 4 inches (extra large x 2) | Material:   Ripstop nylon-polyester blend | Weight:   15.5 ounces (set)

Best budget: Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes

travel packing jewelry

Why we like it: The Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes come with six packing cubes, including a laundry bag and a shoe bag. They cost less than half the price of most other packing bag sets on this list. The low price doesn’t mean low quality, though. The Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes are made of thick polyester, with sturdy zippers and mesh panels to help keep clothes fresh. Plus, they come in 12 colors.

Keep in mind: The laundry and shoe bags are small. The polyester is not ripstop and can melt if dried on high heat.

Product details: Size: 6-piece set: 4.7 x 17 inches (shoe bag), 14 x 20 inches (laundry bag), 11 x 6.75 x 4 inches (small), 13.75 x 9.75 x 4 inches (medium), 13.75 x 12.75 x 4 inches (large), 17.5 x 12.15 x 5 inches (extra large) | Material:   Polyester | Weight:   10.4 ounces (set)

How we chose the best travel packing cubes

We weighed the following qualities when curating the best packing cubes:

Third-party reviews:   We considered reviews from sources other than company websites and spoke with seasoned travelers to find out what they liked.

Brand reputation: Anything you use for traveling should be functional, long-lasting, and, preferably, good for the planet. We looked for brands that value high-quality gear and sustainability.

Quality of material:   We chose travel cubes that were made to last, with durable materials like ripstop nylon and polyester, reinforced seams, and strong zippers.

Size range: Different-sized packing bags make for an easier packing experience. We chose packing cube sets in a range of sizes, from extra small to extra large.

Compression options: Some packing cube brands offer compression bags, which can be a nice feature if you’re tight on space.

Tips for buying packing bags

Here’s what to consider when picking your own packing cubes:

Brand reputation

Choose a trusted brand with a proven reputation. Brands with zipper and fabric warranties or repair programs will also help you get as many vacations as possible with your travel organizers.

If you only use carry-ons or smaller luggage, choose a packing cube set with fewer, smaller travel cubes. If you prefer to use checked luggage, go for a packing cube set with more travel cubes and bigger sizes.

If you travel with just a carry-on or want to use packing cubes for hiking, choose an ultralight packing cube set. Every ounce counts when packing light, and some travel cube sets are nearly 1.5 pounds lighter than others.

Packing cubes are typically made of polyester or nylon, both strong synthetic fabrics. If you need something even more durable, look for ripstop nylon or polyester, which has extra threads to prevent tears from becoming bigger.

Some brands offer compression bags, which can save space. However, King finds that compressed bags can be awkwardly shaped, making them harder to fit together in your suitcase. If you are a heavy packer, travel cubes for shoes or laundry can help keep the rest of your luggage clean.

Frequently asked questions

Packing cubes can help save space in your suitcase and improve organization, reducing stress while traveling.

How much does a packing cube cost?

How to Fly Your Kid Solo, Free of Stress

An illustration of children flying solo on the airplane.

By Alexander Nazaryan

For many parents and guardians, putting a child on a flight alone may seem terrifying. Belligerent passengers, delays, turbulence: All loom large in a caregiver’s imagination.

Life sometimes leaves no other option. Hudson Crites , 17, of Marshall, Va., was 10 when he started flying unaccompanied to visit his father in Kansas and later Georgia, said his mother, Chelsea Tippett. But the extra attention from airline staff made Hudson “feel special,” Ms. Tippett recalls. Other than a single tarmac delay, he has had no problems.

On rare occasions, children have had troubling experiences. In December, Spirit Airlines accidentally flew a 6-year-old to Orlando, Fla., instead of the intended destination of Fort Myers. Spirit apologized, fired the gate agent responsible and offered reimbursement to the boy’s grandmother for her travel to Orlando. But while the boy was unharmed, his grandmother expressed worry that he had been kidnapped .

If you decide to fly your child unaccompanied, you’ll discover that each airline has its own procedures, fees and routes open to children. While some may find the process complicated, flying alone may be exciting for your child, instilling some independence. Here’s what you need to know.

Before you book, know the process

Regardless of the airline or route, flying an unaccompanied minor differs from an adult or a family catching a flight. Airlines require a trusted pre-authorized adult to be at the departure and arrival gates, and will ask you at booking to provide contact information for those adults. They will also need to present identification at the terminals.

The journey begins at the originating airport’s airline ticket counter. There, airline staff will check your identification and check in the child, perhaps handing them a lanyard or wristband to wear. The agents will provide you with a pass to get through security with your child. You will accompany them to the gate, where you will hand them off to a gate agent. You must stay at the gate until the plane takes off.

In the air, the flight crew will keep watch — but will not babysit, or sit with, your child. If the flight has a connection, a crew member will walk your child off the plane and a gate agent will take him or her to the next gate.

At the arrival airport, the child will be handed off by staff to the authorized guardian or parent who should have already checked in at the ticket counter with proper identification, gone through security with their gate pass and be waiting at the gate.

To learn more about this process, read the Department of Transportation’s online guide, “When Kids Fly Alone,” followed by the website of your selected carrier.

Choosing an airline and paying an extra fee

Before purchasing a ticket, experts advise you to consider an airline’s on-time performance. “Solid on-time performance is hard-earned, and signals a carrier that has tight control of its operation,” said the Ask the Pilot author, Patrick Smith. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics has those numbers.

Booking procedures vary. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines require you to call. United Airlines allows bookings online. JetBlue Airways does online bookings, too, but asks for three printed copies of its forms upon arrival at the airport.

International flights may call for a notarized consent letter describing where the child is traveling, with whom they’ll stay and how long they’ll be there.

On top of the ticket fare, flying an unaccompanied minor can be pricey.

Southwest Airlines charges $100 one way for each child, regardless of distance. Alaska Airlines charges $50 per child if the flight is nonstop; a connection adds $25. On Delta, one $150 fee will cover up to four children, and American’s $150 covers all siblings, with no cap on number. United charges $150 for one child, or two children flying together.

Restrictions: There are plenty

U.S. carriers allow children to fly as unaccompanied minors once they turn 5 and before they turn 18. But regardless of your child’s age, make sure he or she is ready by discussing the trip details and your expectations of their behavior. No policy can replace your judgment.

The low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air don’t allow unaccompanied minors, Other airlines have restrictions that, in the broadest terms, differentiate between young children and teenagers. American and Delta restrict children under 8 from routes requiring connections. Both airlines allow children between 8 and 14 to take some connecting flights.

On American, no unaccompanied minor is allowed to take an overnight flight requiring a connection, or a flight that includes a connection on its final leg that also happens to be the last such flight that day (“unless it’s the only flight,” the company adds). Minors are not allowed on code-share flights.

United and Delta have similar rules. Southwest, JetBlue and Spirit don’t allow unaccompanied minors on connecting flights.

JetBlue prohibits minors from flying to Europe, and limits the number of unaccompanied minors in one party to three. Spirit does not allow children on flights to Central or South America. Southwest doesn’t allow children on any international flights. American, United and Delta let minors fly abroad, but restrictions on connections, code-shares and overnights limit options.

American and Delta allow children to opt out of flying as unaccompanied minors once they turn 15 — that is, the child can fly without the assistance of airline personnel. JetBlue ends unaccompanied minor service at 14, while Alaska has an opt-out option at 13. Southwest boasts the lowest opt-out age: 12.

However, you should be able to accompany your child to the gate even if they’re not flying unaccompanied. American requires that you do so for teens between the ages of 15 and 17, even if they’ve opted out.

What to pack

Have a plan to head off your child’s hunger, boredom and thirst. If they are older, make sure they have emergency money and a charged phone.

When her two daughters, then 9 and 11, flew to Denver, Joey Conover of Charlottesville, Va., had a long list for their carry-ons.

“Pack a backpack with iPad, headphones, lightweight book to read, a pad of paper and colored pencils (markers might smear), a small travel game, water bottle (bring empty and fill in airport), snacks, some kind of surprise fidget or animals to play with, hoodie, and a lovey,” she wrote in an email.

“Write your name and phone number on the inside of their arm in Sharpie and put a parent’s business card in a luggage tag on both suitcase and backpack,” Ms. Conover said. (A sheet of paper with all their identification, and their guardian’s contact information, also works. Simply stick in an easy-to-access pocket.)
