Varkala is a small coastal town situated in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. The allure of Varkala lies entirely along the seashore. Located northwest of Thiruvananthapuram and southwest of Kollam Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea.

1. janardhana swamy temple.

This temple is believed to be two millennia old. The present structure dated back to twelfth century. The temple is located in a beautiful scenic spot, a short walk away from the cliff top. The original temple, A vishnu shrine was destroyed by the tidal waves.

The popular belief is that many years back when a Pandyan King did penance to Lord Brahma he was instructed to rebuild the temple. A perennial spring called Padmatheertham feed the temple.

2. Papanasam Beach

Papanasam Beach, a secluded 500-meter stretch of white sand between the steep red cliffs is a popular tourist attraction in Varkala. This is covered with coconut palms and the azure Arabian Sea.

Papanasam one of the main beaches of Varkala is a respected Hindu pilgrimage site.The belief is that a dip in the holy waters of this beach washes away all sins and thereby purifies the body and spirit. The name itself represents this.

3. Sivagiri Mutt

Sivagiri, a 200 acre holy land is famous for Sivagiri Mutt. Sivagiri Mutt is a memorial of Shri Narayana Guru. This is the final resting place of Sree Narayana Guru and is located at Varkala in the capital city of Kerala. The Mutt is about 3 km from Varkala on the banks of the Thiruvananthapuram - Shoranur canal.

Every year the ashram celebrates Guru Deva Jayanti (in August) and the Gurudeva Samadhi (in September). Why Go: The coastal town of Varkala is perhaps the best backpacker hangout and place to chill for travellers in the tropical South Indian state of Kerala. Varkala is essentially a temple town, the Janardhana Temple, popular with Indian pilgrims, dominates one end of the beach, but not far away the whole scene changes as the sandy strip of beach becomes popular with travellers while the towering red cliffs offer stunning ocean views, restaurants, shops and a real traveller scene.

Top Things to do in Varkala

Varkala more a place for chilling than doing although travellers can enjoy both here.

The beach below the cliff is most popular with travellers – it’s fine to sunbath, swim and also surf in a bikini here. But be aware, the current here is really strong but there are lifeguards patrolling the beach and in the rainy season the beach almost disappears to a thin slither of sand.
Or head over towards the Janardhana Temple where Sadhus to perform the last rights for the relatives of Indian pilgrims as they also get their first taste of the ocean. (wearing a bikini on this part of the beach will probably bring unwanted attention.)

Relax with all sorts of yoga, massages and alternative therapies available. Just walk along the cliff top and take your pick but, as Kerala is the home of Ayurveda (a traditional plant based healing) while in Kerala be sure to try a traditional Ayurveda massage.
Hire a scooter and explore. As soon as you get away from Varkala Cliff the area is resolutely Indian and not touristy at all. Head north towards Kappil Beach where the coast meets the backwaters or drive south along authentic fishing villages and miles of undeveloped coastline until you reach Anjengo Fort – one of the oldest in India. Head inland to visit Ponnumthuruthu Island where a temple nestles on a serene island in a palm tree lined backwater lake, (you can also try stand up paddle boarding here)

You could even use Varkala as an affordable and chilled out base from which to explore the rest of Kerala from as travel agents here can organise trips along the backwaters, a day trip in the capital of Kerala, Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) with the golden Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple (non hindus are not allowed to enter but it’s still a spectacular sight from the outside) and nearby the historic wooden Puthe Maliga Palace , and the nearby more main stream tourist beach resort of Kovalam .

Where to Stay in Varkala

The area around the cliff top has plenty of budget accommodation and a couple of decent mid range places.

Save: The Best Hostels and Guesthouses in Varkala

Varkala’s only hostel, Vedanta Wake Up is situated only 5 minutes walk from the cliff top with dorms, private rooms and a sociable scene.

You can also search around further back from the cliffside and find cheap rooms for around 400 Rupees. The Mango House opposite the Vedanta Hostel is a cheap, nice and pretty popular option or check out the Heavenly Breeze Beach Resort which is only 5 mins from the beach and has large, clean and great value rooms situated in a nice garden area. Royal Pine Huts also has bright and cheerful rooms between the cliff and the temple part of Varkala.

Splurge: The Best Hotels in Varkala

Seaview rooms cost a bit more but are worth the money. Most accommodation is of the budget variety and not many have pools although the Krishnatheeram Beach Resort has characterful rooms and a small pool overlooking Black Beach at the far end of the cliff. The Clafouti Beach Resort is probably the best mid range option with it’s views over the ocean, cute Kerala style cottages and landscaped grounds. The Hillview Resort also has comfortable, well located and great value rooms.

Where to Eat in Varkala

The cliff top in Varkala is lined with stalls and traveller orientated eateries with stunning views over the ocean. Many places have happy hours with buy one get on free cocktails and mixed menus of all the Indian, Chinese and Western traveller favourites along with fresh seafood. Varkala is also the easiest place in Kerala to find alcohol. Some of the best restaurants in Varkala are:

Coffee Temple – open for breakfast and lunch at the start of the clifftop strip this chilled out place does great hot and cold coffees, tea, smoothies, breakfasts, salads, pizzas, sandwiches and Mexican food.

Abba – great restaurant with a huge menu run by a Swedish/ Indian couple. Abba serves a bit of everything and has good Western food.

Darjeeling Café – has a lovely chilled out vibe and a great spot for sunset. Serves all the Indian and traveller favourites but is especially good for the tasty Thai food.

El Italiano – Italian restaurant with super friendly staff. The downstairs feels cosy with the book lined walls and upstairs is a great deck with good views. Good pizzas and pastas.

Blue Moon – A popular place with lots of outdoor seating, huge menu and great for seafood.

Luna Azul – chilled out place at the far end of the cliff overlooking black beach with good Indian food and regular live music nights.

How to get to Varkala

The nearest airport to Varkala is in Trivandrum. Varkala has a train station and is about 1 hour from Trivandrum’s Central Station and Airport. A prepaid taxi from Trivandrum should cost about 1,200 rupees. You can also reach Kochi in about 3/4 hours by train or public bus.

That’s a hard one. Both are great places to travel and are better than other places in India for females. Although to be honest the digital nomad scene in India is not as developed as places like Thailand and getting decent internet can be difficult. Must Know Before You Travel to Varkala

Safety: Take care while walking on the cliff path at night, as it can get quite slippery and there is no fence in some parts.
Dress Code: It is better to be conservatively dressed on the beach keeping in mind local sensibilities. Wear a sarong over your bikini. Also stay away from drunken strangers, beggars and hawkers.
Rough Sea: Varkala has dangerously strong currents, and even expert swimmers need to be cautious in the waters.

Munroe Island is a tiny piece of property with its own existence, and it’s your slice of peace amid the commotion. A trip on a canoe to this verdant island in Varkala is an unforgettable experience. On one side are tiny settlements filled with coconut palms, and on the other are pastel green paddy fields.

At night, the glimmer of moonlight on the water is stunning. The quietness throughout this area makes it seem like you’re in a dreamlike state. It’s especially lovely at dawn and sunset when the sky cracks open into a thousand colours and the water becomes fiery. The swish-swish of village winds carry with them the aroma of earth, while the low drone of distant birds fills your ears.

You can get here by train or taxi, which is connected to the island by a bridge. This is one of Varkala’s greatest attractions.

23. Visit Sivagiri Mutt

Sivagiri is a pilgrimage site in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and one of Shri Narayana Guru’s notable ashrams.

The Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham is located in the Sivagiri hills, which is home to the Sivagiri Mutt, built-in 1904. It’s a religious organization founded by the Guru for his followers and saints.

You can watch colourful processions and cultural events, debates and seminars, public meetings, group weddings, neighbourhood feasts, and rituals to commemorate the birth of the Guru in August and the day of his Samadhi in September every year.

24. Varkala Tunnel

Varkala Tunnel is an ancient tunnel built in 1867 by Sir T. Madhava Rao, the Dewan of Travancore at the time. This took approximately 14 years to construct and allowed traders to pause before proceeding toward Thiruvananthapuram. This historical inland waterway is a magnificent illustration of colonial architecture in the area.

Chilakoor Beach is located 15 kilometres from Varkala. The route to the beach passes through old seaside hamlets, allowing you a look at rural Kerala life. The beach is also popular for its peaceful setting and breathtaking sunset views.

Varkala is in the very South of India in the state of Kerala, however when I think of Kerala I think of the backwaters of Kerala and the tea plantations of Kerala , not rugged waves, wild beaches and smoothie bowls, but that’s exactly what Varkala Beach offers and this is why Varkala Beach is such a popular place to visit in South India and it makes Kerala even more diverse!

Varkala Beach must be on your list of places to visit in South India, it’s a chilled beachside town, and although I loved the beachside town of Palolem in Goa , Varkala has much more of an edge than Goa, I really liked this and that’s exactly why I think you should visit Varkala and add it to your Kerala itinerary and South India itinerary !

SIM CARD FOR INDIA

I really recommend having a sim card in India as it makes travel in India so much easier! Why Varkala is Perfect for Foreigners to India ?

It’s chilled!

I would say this is the main reason I recommend you head to Varkala in Kerala, it’s just so chilled! South India is known to be more chilled than North India but at the same time many places in South India are still very busy and bustling and taking a break on the coast of Varkala is the perfect way to relax from your travels around Southern India.

Goa, of course, is another place you can relax in South India but as I said above, Varkala just has more of a cool edge I think.

Varkala is popular with holidaymakers, Westerner’s and Indian’s but how many people do you know that go to Goa on a 2 week holiday in India, compared to how many people go to Varkala on a 2 week holiday… it’s a different kind of place and vibe and therefore attract people of a more chilled vibe.

There are also plenty of places to stay in Varkala Beach, plenty of places to eat and it’s not crazy expensive either so good for backpackers to India on a budget.

How to Get to Varkala Beach ?

Varkala is actually really easy to get to because it has a train station in the town which is a mainline station in a line running down the west coast of India.

A train from Kochi to Varkala is only 3 hours and my ticket from Varkala to Kochi cost me just 80Rs/ 80p in second seating.. bargain!

If you’re flying into South India, the best way to reach Varkala is to fly into Trivandrum Airport . Trivandrum is actually quite a big city right in the South of India and from there you can get a 2-hour taxi or a train from Trivandrum Station to Varkala Station.

If you want to arrange a private pickup in advance from Trivandrum Airport to Varkala, have a look at this option on Viator .

I didn’t have any experience with local buses to Varkala and with the train station being a mainline station with regular trains, buses are not really needed however Varkala is well connected by bus to nearby places in South India too!

If you don’t have much time to stay in Varkala but you want to visit, it is possible to do a day trip from Varkala from Trivandrum City. This tour will make sure you see the best of Varkala in one day !

Note – Be sure to take out cash before you get to Varkala Cliffside as the nearest ATM is in the town which is a 45-minute walk away!

Best Places Stay in Varkala Beach.

There are so many places to stay in Varkala and the accommodation is all guesthouses, hotels and hostels. Although you may find some huts and bungalows, these will not be on the beach, instead, they will be in a garden in a resort.

Varakala’s beach is below a huge cliff so accommodation is all along the cliffside.

When looking for the best hotels in Varkala, be sure to stay along the cliffside or just in, do not stay in the town centre as it is a fairly busy Indian Town and as a backpacker and holidaymaker in Varkala, you’ll want to be on the cliff and by the beach!

For a hostel in Varkala be sure to check out The Lungi Vibe Hostel ! It’s in a great location just 2 minutes from the walkway along the cliff and a 10-minute walk from the main beach. They serve good value food in their cafe making it really convenient and a cheaper way to visit Varkala on a budget, plus their private rooms and dorm rooms are really well priced.

If you want a guest house in Varkala so you can get a private room at a good price , there are so so many and from what I saw so many of them are good quality. They’re in 2 story buildings, often with a balcony/porch with a table and chairs and hammock (I feel like a hammock is a must here).

If you want to splash out a bit more in Varkala there are plenty of Varkala Beach Resorts and Hotels in Varkala and a few of them further down the cliffside have pools. None of them looked overly fancy but if you want more space they are a good option.

Kerala is the home of Ayurveda and I actually saw most Ayurveda and Wellness Hotels in Varkala out of anywhere else I went. For a wellness stay in Varkala, I’d recommend Puccini Lala Eco Wellness Resort , they have their own restaurant which you can visit even if you don’t stay (more on that below), they have accommodation of huts in a nice private area as well as their own big yoga shala! Plus an Ayurvedic Doctor onsite with treatment rooms! If you need a bit of a retreat whilst in Varkala, this is the place to go!

Alternatively, if you’re the type of backpacker that is happy to arrive with no accommodation booked, you’ll be happy to hear that you can do this in Varkala! A few times I got asked if I needed accommodation and I did especially when I was walking to my hostel with my bag which just shows that the old school way of travelling does work here still too and this will probably benefit from getting a slightly better price in accommodation.

Things to do in Varkala Beach

I won’t lie, there’s not a huge amount of things to do in Varkala but that’s kind of why it’s is so nice!

The main beach is a great place to sunbathe which is nice as other beaches in Kerala such as Alleppey are huge beaches but very local and not sunbathing beaches. Unlike the beaches in Goa , you will not find beach bar’s along the beach in Varkala. There are a few sun loungers which you can hire but generally, everyone sunbathes on the beach.

The ocean is great for swimming in too. The waves are big but not too big and it feels really fresh! Which is good because it gets hot down here in South India!

Be sure to head for a morning walk on the beach , not only is it a nice time to walk before it gets too hot but in the middle of the main beach you’ll see locals and Indian visitors doing a ceremony which I believe is for members of their family that have recently died… a bit morbid but interesting to witness the local culture.

On that note, Varkala’s beach has quite a distinct line of between the local and traditional Indian side, and the foreign side but also Indian holidaymaker side. You can visit the local side but as a woman especially, perhaps put your dress back on rather than being in a bikini, although there’s no rule to say you can’t.

BOOKING TRAINS IN INDIA

India is best travelled by train because its the quickest, cheapest and best way of getting to know the country. For an EASY option of booking trains in India use 12GO to search and book trains really easily. If you’ll be in India for awhile, you can use the local booking system, it’s a bit tricker but possible, here’s my post on how to book trains in India as a tourist .

BEST ACCOMMODATION IN INDIA

I always use Booking.com to book my hotels in India and Hostelworld to book my hostels . India has a great range of accommodation with brilliant hostel chains like Moustache, Zostel and Backpacker Panda as well as homestays to luxury hotels.

GUIDED TOURS IN INDIA

Many cities in India are best seen with a guide , even if it’s just a half day tour on your first day . Cities in India are chaotic and complex and what better way to taste the food and get to know the city than with a local. I recommend Get Your Guide & Viator for the best tours in India!

Thanks to Varkala being fully west facing, there is a great sunset each night from the beach and cliffside!

The cliffside is home to many many shops so if shopping in Kerala is something you want to do you can shop in Varkala well!

I heard that Varkala is becoming the new Yoga spot in India and I’d have to say that I agree! The only place I have seen more Yoga being offered is Rishikesh which is the home of Yoga in India right now, but Rishikesh is all the way up North so it’s great to see so much Yoga in Varkala Kerala! There are lots of drop-in sessions for 300Rs for 90 minutes, Hatha seemed the most popular style of Yoga, but I did see Vinyasa offered a lot too. There are also lots of places offering Yoga Teacher Training and Yoga Retreats are popular in Varkala too!

Although if you’re looking for a Yoga Retreat, I’d recommend Earth Yoga Village in Palolem Goa !

Kerala is the home of Ayurveda so lots of massages can be found in Varkala. I’d say that a lot of them are not ‘real’ Ayurvedic places where you can see an Ayurvedic Doctor who is fully interested in you but if you want a good massage at a good price, this is the place to do it! I heard 1 hour full body massages being offered for 500Rs.

Surfing is a popular activity in Varkala thanks to it’s awesome waves.

I didn’t see any boat tours being offered by locals to see Dolphins however you can see Dolphins from the beach and especially from up on the cliff so make sure you get a seat in a cafe by the water one day and keep your eyes open for Dolphins!

Be sure to keep a lookout for local events too, I saw a yoga festival being advertised, a yoga and wellness day, healing courses, live music and so much more by looking at all of the flyers and stickers that line the cliffside!

Be sure to take out cash before you get to Varkala Cliffside as the nearest ATM is in the town which is a 45 minute walk away!

Best Places to Eat in Varkala Beach

Varkala is a really nice place for food because there are plenty of options and they all line the cliffside. Most of the options are tourist places but they offer Indian and International Food and there are a few gems that offer more fancy and healthy dishes like Smoothie Bowls and Avo on toast, heaven if you’ve been in India a while and want some International Food!

Here are some of the best places to eat in Varkala:

The White Rabbit

Right on the cliffside, it’s Vegetarian with a cool menu. They offer Indian Dishes like Dosa and Curries but they also offer Smoothies, Smoothie Bowls, Avo on Toast, Burgers and many different types of Buddha Bowls! I sat in here a few times to do work too as the wifi is good! Although still don’t expect the exact dishes of the International dishes you get at home, they do vary a bit!

Coffee Temple

This is a really popular place and not just because of their good coffee. They have a full range of juices and a big food menu, mainly western dishes but things a bit different like Tacos. They also have a full and separate Vegan menu which is really great if you are a Vegan in India! Be warned that this place does get busy though, especially around 11:00-12:00. The wifi is good here too making it a popular place for people to work from!

This is a really cool spot and mainly because of its decoration and its spot overlooking the ocean. Their menu is more like a bible (it’s so heavy), they serve good Indian food but also plenty of western food with lots of western breakfast dishes too! It’s good during the day but also in the evening when all the lights turn on and sometimes they have live music.

The Juice Shack

As you can imagine these guys serve juice and for a really good price! They have a huge range of juices all from just 80Rs. They do serve food too but I was quite disappointed by my food there whenever I ate there so I would recommend just going for the juice!

Tibet Kitchen

Varkala is a long way from Tibet but luckily there is a Tibetan Restaurant and they serve the best Momo’s! Seriously, they’re so good! They also serve lots of other food – Indian and International, but please go here for the momo’s and the friendly staff!

I ate here with my friends on our last night together, we got a table on the rooftop and watched the sunset, the food was nice and the menu was the standard menu of offering everything but for sure the main reason I’d recommend eating here is because of the panoramic view across the beach and cliff.

Puccini Lala Eco

For good, healthy, Vegan food head here! It’s actually Puccini Lala Eco Wellness Resort but it has a restaurant open to the public and offers Vegan Buffets for Lunch and Dinner as well as a full menu of food and drink. The lunch buffet is 200Rs and the dinner buffet is 300Rs. The wifi is also very good and it’s in a quieter place down the cliffside.

How to reach Varkala, Kerala
