Indiana counties lower travel advisories as plows clear snow on roads

12:30 p.m.:  Morgan County's status was lowered to a travel advisory.

11:49 a.m.:  Hamilton County's status was lowered to a travel advisory.

Winter storm Landon has departed, but remnants of the system’s sleet and snow are lingering on Central Indiana roads and continuing to impact travel Friday morning.

Every county in Indiana remains under a travel advisory from the storm as of 1 p.m. The yellow-orange-red system advises residents about what course of action to take given general road conditions in their county.

Marion County remains the only county in Central Indiana in the “yellow” as of 8 a.m. Friday. Yellow is the lowest level of travel advisories, during which residents should be cautious when traveling and avoid hazardous areas.

Hamilton, Hendricks, Madison, Hancock, Shelby and Johnson counties are under travel watches, meaning only essential travel is recommended. Boone and Morgan Counties are in the red, meaning people are asked not to do any travel.

Boone County Commissioners declared a state of emergency for the county Thursday afternoon and upgraded their travel advisory to red beginning at 5 p.m., according to a Facebook post from the Boone County Sheriff's Office.

The National Weather Service recorded total snowfall for Indianapolis from the storm at 7.3 inches. Meteorologists and first responders said the snow continues to blanket the roads, impacting Friday morning travel. Even roads that have been plowed may have slick spots, according to police.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine in a tweet urged drivers to slow down, noting troopers are on scene or responding to “dozens” of crashes in the Indianapolis area.

The level of travel advisory a county enters is up to the county's Emergency Management Agency, which notifies the state Department of Homeland Security. A map of Indiana is continually updated with travel statuses at  in.gov/dhs/traveladvisory/ .
