It was Gunung Tambora (Mount Tambora) that isolated the people of the west from the Bimanese for centuries. So separate are they that the native language of the Sumbawanese is more akin to those of the Balinese and the Lombok Sasaks, while the Bima language is more like those of Flores and Sumba.

There are other things to do and see in Sumbawa besides the surf. The rich and famous use part of Pulau Moyo, off the north coast, as a remote luxury getaway.

Moyo is also a nature reserve protecting forests and wildlife, and there are two waterfalls presenting rugged trekking opportunities. The mighty Gunung Tambora provides off-the-beaten-track trekking, and there are megaliths believed to be related to those in Sumba.

Some of the best surf in the world can be found off the coast of Sumbawa but there are plenty of things to do on the island. Non-surfers can trek through forests, snorkel off the south coast of Pulau Moyo or view ancient stone sarcophagi.

#1 Surf at Hu'u Beach

Due south of Dompu is Hu’u. Better known amongst surfers as ‘lakeys’, it offers superlative waves on the outlying reefs at Periscopes, Nangas, Lakey Peak, Lakey Pipe, and Cobblestones.

The main beach in front of the Lakey Peak surf break has beautiful white sand, and at low tide, there is good reef walking. Swimming and snorkelling are possible in small inlets.

#2 See large stone sarcophagi at Batu Tering

The hills east of Sumbawa Besar contain large stone sarcophagi, carved in low relief with human forms and crocodiles.

Batu Tering, about 29km (18 miles) south of Sumbawa Besar, has megaliths said to be the royal tombs of ancient chiefs of a Neolithic culture that thrived about 2,000 years ago.

About 2km (1.25 miles) beyond is Liang Petang (Dark Cave), with stalactites and stalagmites resembling humans and weaving looms.

#3 See the waterfalls of Palau Moyo

Travelling west from Sumbawa Besar brings you to Pulau Moyo. Two-thirds of the island is a game reserve to protect the island’s deer, banteng wild ox, 21 bat species and wild boars.

The flora here ranges from savannah to dense jungle containing teak, tamarind and banyan trees. There are two waterfalls; the one near Labuan Aji village is an easier trek.

South of the island the water is crystal clear and the reefs undisturbed, ideal for snorkellers and divers, with a white-sand beach opposite the island at Tanjung Manis.

#4 Climb Gunung Tambora

Serious trekkers may want to ascend Gunung Tambora. In 1815, some 100 cu km (25 cu miles) of debris were ejected into the atmosphere with a force equivalent to that of several hydrogen bombs, creating ‘the year without summer’ in 1816.

Located on the northern peninsula of Sumbawa, the gaping, 2,821-metre (9,250ft) high caldera offers spectacular views on a clear day. The ascent begins at Calabai, a small logging town on the coast. It is a very difficult three-day climb and a guide is essential.

#5 Watch a pencak silat (martial arts) performance at Bima

At Bima, if there is a festival going on, you may catch pencak silat (martial arts) and other dance performances at the sultan’s palace.

At the pasar (local market), you’ll see women wearing colourful headscarves that are unique to this region; unmarried women must cover everything except their eyes.

There are several traditional villages in the hills east of Bima, where traces of pre-Islamic belief systems endure. Donggo is the main settlement. Women here still weave indigo cloth, from which they make their traditional clothing.

#6 Spend the day at Sekongkang beach

On the west coast from Taliwang south to Sekongkang beach (familiarly called Yo-Yo’s), the scenic coastline has superb white-sand beaches.

There is prime surfing at Scar Reef near Jereweh, at Supersucks near Maluk, and at Yo-Yo’s on the south coast.

As a surfing magnet, travellers tend to stay around the best breaks in Sumbawa, though accommodation on the island is somewhat basic unless you're staying at Pulau Moyo.

Close to some of the best breaks, Maluk and neighbouring Benete have a number of budget hotels that cater to surfers.

There is a handful of cheap, chilled guesthouses near this famous surf spot.

The rich and famous use part of Pulau Moyo, off the north coast, as a remote luxury getaway.

The city of Bima has a number of non-award-winning hotels that cater to backpackers and businesspeople.

There are no Michelin stars to be found in Sumbawa, instead the best restaurants tend to be warungs selling Indonesian food. Some of the surfing spots sell Western food like burgers and pizzas. There is nearly no nightlife on the island, most will visit a night market.

Rumah Makan Sabar Subur, Bima Popular with the locals, the bandeng goreng (grilled fish and rice) at this clean, cheap warung is the pick of the menu.

Wreck, Lakey Beach As the name suggests, this restaurant has made the most of a beached boat that sells Indonesian and Western food. It's the Mexican-style fajitas and burritos that keep people lingering, though.

Aneka Rasa Jaya, Sumbawa Besar Some of the best seafood served on the island comes from this Chinese restaurant. Get the squid or the scallops in Szechuan sauce.

Most people get to Sumbawa by boat from Lombok or Flores, though domestic flights serve the island as well. These are the best ways to get to Sumbawa:

Most travellers will arrive by boat. There are ferries from both Flores and Lombok to Sumbawa.

Sumbawa has domestic airports in Bima and Sumbawa Besar, which receive flights from Flores, Lombok, and other nearby islands.

To do Sumbawa justice, look to spend between 3-5 days here. From ancient spiritual sites and bustling markets to glorious beaches and volcanic landscapes, there’s much to explore.

Firmly on your urban itinerary should be the 17th-century Sultan Salahuddin Mosque and Sumbawa Besar Night Market. When heading further afield, tick off Benete Beach, known for its beautiful white sand and clear water, and Hu'u Beach, for surfing.

In the other direction, Tangga Batu Beach is popular for snorkelling and swimming. For a well-rounded trip, juxtapose sandy beach life with excursions to traditional villages; Sumbawa Kecil is a small, rural village that offers visitors a glimpse into the traditional way of life on Sumbawa Island.

The village is known for its traditional houses, which are built from bamboo and thatched roofs, and for its friendly locals.

Also worthy of a visit is Kampung Adat Wera. Here, see local people making traditional handicrafts such as weaving and pottery.

Elongate your trip to Sumbawa with a hike to the summit of Mount Tambora. Trekking here can be challenging but rewarding - it is an active volcano with a beautiful crater lake – and typically takes around 2-3 days to complete.

Getting around Sumbawa can at times be challenging, but the main highway – which runs from Taliwang (near the west coast) across to Sape (east coast) – is in pretty good nick.

Having your own wheels is exceptionally helpful when navigating Sumbara. The best way to hire a car tends to be through your hotel.

By motorbike

Several rental agencies in the larger towns offer motorbikes for rent at reasonable rates.

Long-distance buses serve the major towns across the island.

By bemos (minibus)

Bemos are usually cheap, but they can be crowded and uncomfortable – especially for longer journeys.

The best time to visit Sumbawa is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. During this time, the weather is generally dry and sunny, making it ideal for trekking and beach life. If you’re coming for the surf, catch the best waves from April to October.

It's important to note that Sumbawa is a tropical destination and even during the dry season, there may still be occasional rainfall, so it's always a good idea to pack a rain jacket or umbrella just in case.

The rainy season typically runs from November to April. During this time, heavy rainfall and high humidity can make outdoor activities difficult and some areas can become inaccessible due to flooding or landslides. Some businesses and tourist attractions close during this time.

15 Best Places to Visit in Sumbawa (Indonesia)

Sumbawa is located in sunny West Nusa Tenggara in Indonesia and is separated from neighboring Lombok by the Strait of Alas. It is separated from Komodo Island by the Sape Strait and has the Indian Ocean on its south side and the Flores Sea on the north. Sumbawa is the largest island in West Nusa Tenggara and is blessed with an array of spectacular scenery including its crowning glory in the form of Mount Tambora which also happens to be a still-active volcano.

Other attractions in Sumbawa include its turquoise waters and sandy beaches, and anyone who likes diving or snorkeling won’t leave disappointed. It is also one of the hidden gems of the Indonesian surf scene, so if you are looking for a place to bring your board then look no further than Sumbawa. This part of Indonesia is often not well visited by travelers, but those who travel down this far will find an engaging local culture that is quite different from other parts of the country coupled with a relaxed and serene beachside atmosphere.

Let’s explore the best places to visit in Sumbawa :

1. Poto Tano

Poto Tano is one of the main tourist areas in Sumbawa although that still doesn’t mean that it is very busy.

It is also the gateway to Sumbawa as you can take a ferry across from Lombok which will take you to Poto Tano.

Although it’s a port town Poto Tano is one of the prettiest of its kind in Indonesia and you will find the town surrounded by jade green hills and emerald waters which means that it is a hit with any photographers looking to get some souvenir snaps.

In between the sandy beaches here you will also find rambling areas of virgin rainforest and on a clear day you can see across to might Mount Rinjani on Lombok.

2. Kenawa Island

Kenawa Island in Sumbawa is not to be confused with Kenawa Island in Flores.

Whatever its name however it is one of the most beautiful places in Sumbawa and you will find acres of fluffy sand and elegant grass lands.

The island is uninhabited and stretches for around 15 hectares, but you can come here on a day trip and enjoy the snorkeling off shore with a high chance of seeing starfish, sea horses, crabs, and a wealth of other colorful aquatic life.

If you want to stay a little longer on Kenawa Island then you can camp here overnight as part of an organized tour which is the highlight of a trip to Sumbawa for many visitors.

Lakey is one of the top surf spots in Sumbawa and all along the coastline here you will find a range of good surf breaks which are famous with expatriate surfers and those in the know.

One of the other plus points of Lakey is that, because it sees a range of travelers, it is more developed for visitors and you can find some solid dining options here and you will even find a few beach bars.

As a result, if it’s your first time to Sumbawa and you want to ease in gently, this is one of the best spots to choose.

4. Moyo Island

Around two kilometers to the north of the main island of Sumbawa is Moyo Island.

The island is the home of the Moyo Island National Park which tells you everything you need to know about the famed natural beauty of the region.

The coral reefs in particular are spectacular here so if you like diving you are in for a treat.

Back on land, you can trek through the park and there is a good chance of seeing wild boars and lizards.

Moyo Island is also famous for having over 20 different kinds of bats, so nature lovers should make sure to swing by here on a visit to Sumbawa.

5. Jereweh Waterfall

Sumbawa is an island covered in waterfalls and one of the most stunning of them all is Jereweh Waterfall.

Rather confusingly, the waterfall is sometimes referred to as Ai Koa Waterfall or Janup Waterfall and it is one of the most interesting cataracts in Indonesia as the falls are set in a staircase formation which means that the water here spurts down the mountainside in jagged bursts.

Jereweh Waterfall is located outside of Taliwang which happens to be the capital of West Sumbawa and is a must-visit attraction if you are in the area.

Make sure to check out the towering trees here with their thick roots that wrap around the surrounding rocks.

6. Ai Manis Beach

Ai Manis Beach is a favorite for travelers to Sumbawa and is located on wider Moyo Island.

One of the main reasons to come here is to enjoy the underwater extravaganza that Ai Manis Beach provides and you will find colorful coral reefs and a variety of cute underwater critters.

The beach is also surrounded by forests which are home to wild pigs and deer, so if you decide to stay on land you will still find plenty to see here.

7. The Old Palace of Dalam Loka

Located on the second largest island in Sumbawa which is Sumbawa Besar, the palace of the former sultan of Sumbawa is a great pick if you want to learn a little more about the history of this area.

The palace dates from 1885 and would have been built in the time of Muhammad Jalaluddin Shah III who was the 16th sultan of the Dewa Dalam Bawa Dynasty.

The palace is still a rather impressive affair and is made of wood and is one of the most iconic sights in Sumbawa.

It is claimed that the palace is an amazing feat of engineering as it was made without using nails, and stands instead as a result of a clever series of wooden slotting joints.

8. Benete Beach

Located in West Sumbawa, Benete Beach is one of the most popular in the area and a big part of this is down to the dining options here.

The beach is close to the Batu Hijau Mine region, and it is here that you will find some of the most delicious seafood in all of Sumbawa.

The beach is a little different from many others in the area as it is covered in a kind of black sand which is a result of volcanic mineral deposits.

The best way to enjoy it is to seek out a little local eatery, order up a plate of simply grilled seafood and tuck in while enjoying the views across the water.

9. Maluk Beach

Maluk has a pretty beach which is also made even more interesting by the fact that it backs on seas that are blessed with a pounding surf.

Many surf aficionados who have heard about the scene in Sumbawa flock here, but you will need to bring your board with you as it can be hard to rent anything on the beach.

The waves get up to a height of around 2 meters and the village of Maluk where the beach is located is also a good place to visit in its own right as it is filled with local warungs and leafy scenery.

10. Mata Jitu Waterfall

Inside the Moyo Island Forest is the Mata Jitu Waterfall which you will hear long before you see it.

To get here you will need to trek through the forest and the waterfalls are said to have formed millions of years ago long before the area was even inhabited.

The waterfall is staggered over four sections and there are seven pools here that you can swim in and come as a welcome relief after the hot trek to get out to the location.

11. Tropica Beach

Tropica Beach is also sometimes referred to as Tropicals, although whatever it is called it is certainly the quintessential tropical paradise.

You will find this amazing beach outside the village of Sekongkang Bawah in wider Sekongkang and it is one of the prettiest stretches of sand in the area.

There is some surfing to be had here although unlike some of the other beaches in the area which are only really worth visiting if you are a hard core surfer, Tropica Beach is also good for swimmers or those who just want to kick back and lay on the sand.

12. Liang Petang

Liang Petang is not recommended for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia or who is afraid of the dark.

Liang translates as cave in Indonesian and Petang means dark, and this is pretty much what you will get here – a dark cave.

If you bring a flashlight with you however the cave will come alive with elegant stalactites and stalagmites that adorn the inner chamber.

You will find some oddities inside including rock formations that look like tomb stones, so if you like archaeology this is another spot not to miss in Sumbawa.

13. Gunung Tambora

Gunung Tambora is the highest peak on Sumbawa and stands at almost 3,000 meters tall.

The mountain is also an active volcano, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t climb it as it hasn’t erupted properly since the 1960s.

To trek to the top of Gunung Tambora you will need to make your way to the village of Pancasila and from there you can hire a guide and set off on your hike.

Depending on your fitness levels it usually takes several days to climb to the summit and back down again, and even if you are in very good shape it is not possible to get to the crater in a day.

As such, you will need to camp out overnight if you want to conquer the summit.

14. Satonda Island

Satonda Island is part of Sumbawa and is best visited as part of a boat trip which lets you take in some of the best scenery in the area.

The island has the claim to fame of having a large crater lake in the center which would have been a volcano and which has now filled with salt water.

You can get a boat across to Satonda Island from neighboring Pancasila and there is one resort here if you want to stay overnight.

Common pastimes at the island include snorkeling or simply enjoying the vistas over the lake.

15. Gili Paserang

Just a short jump across from Poto Tano is the island of Gili Paserang which is one of the sweetest spots in Sumbawa.

If you travel here by boat you will find white sandy beaches and you can camp on the island as long as you have your own camping equipment.

As with many parts of Sumbawa the big draw here is the snorkeling and Gili Paserang backs onto banks of pretty coral.

Certainly if you really want to get away from it all then consider camping under the stars here as it will doubtless be the highlight of a trip to stunning Sumbawa.

SWIM WITH THE WHALE SHARKS AT SALEH BAY

What better way is there to have an adventure in Sumbawa than swimming with giant sharks? Whale sharks, despite their size, are actually very gentle and safe to swim with. If you go and visit the sharks, we recommend going during the right season so you can see them up close. These times are usually from May to August. Check with the tour provider for the best dates. You're going to have to leave the shore in the middle of the night to meet them, but it's all worth the effort! Get your cameras ready for some starry night photos on the boat. LIGHT TREKKING KENAWA ISLAND

Boasting lush green grass and a beautiful view of the island and the sea, Kenawa Island is one of the best places to go trekking in Sumbawa! Depending on when you go, the plants and grass could change between brown and green, both of which look stunning in photos. The view from below is stunning and it gets better as you go up. Make sure to choose the right time to visit so you can get the most out of your visit. SNORKELING PASERANG ISLAND

With pristine clear water and a large variety of vibrant reef fish swimming about, the calm sea near Paserang Island is one of the best places for family-friendly snorkeling. You can see diverse marine life, from the colorful parrot fish to the small damsels. The area is very near Kenawa Island too, so you can do both activities on the same day! TAKE A DIP IN MATA JITU WATERFALL

Hidden behind Moyo Island's luscious forest is the beautiful Mata Jitu Waterfall. Surrounded by greenery and the sounds of nature, this waterfall is a popular photo spot for visiting tourists. Not only visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery, but they also can splish and splash in the cascading pool of water or brave the water pressure and feel the falling water on the head. Moyo Island can be accessed by boat from the Sumbawa coastline. A small fishing boat can take you there in about 2.5 hours, but a speed boat ride will only take 40 minutes. After reaching the island, you can hire someone on a motorbike to take you there and back (20 minutes) or walk to the waterfall (1.5 hours). Mata Jitu Waterfall boasts thousand-year-old rocks and gorgeous stalactites and stalagmites. Make sure to bring your cameras, swimsuits, and trekking shoes!

Getting In & Out of Sumbawa

The easiest way to get to Sumbawa is by fast boat from Lombok’s eastern sea port, Labuan Lombok to Poto Tano in Sumbawa. The crossing takes 1.5 hours and boats run 24 hours a day except in bad weather.

Alternatively, if you’re heading to the surfing destinations of Maluk, Jalenga, Sekongkang or Tropicals on the Sumbawa’s south-west coast, the most direct access is via the Newmont mine KSB Fast Boat service which operates twice daily between Kayangan passenger terminal (Labuan Lombok) and Benete passenger terminal (Maluk, Sumbawa). At the time of writing, departure times from Benete were 8:00AM & 2:00PM, or from Kayangan 10:00AM & 4:15PM. The crossing takes 1.5 hours on a comfortable, modern ferry. Tickets cost Rp 135.000 for adults, Rp 75.000 for children. No need to book ahead as tickets can be purchased at the terminal prior to departure, but be sure to arrive at least 30 mins prior to departure.

Coming from Bali, take the slow ferry from Pandang Bai, Bali to Lembar Harbour, west Lombok (approximately 5 hours), then grab a car for the 3 hour trip travel overland to Labuan Lombok, on the east coast to hook up with the fast boat to Sumbawa.

To or from Labuan Bajo in Flores, there’s a daily slow ferry or a fast boat which runs three times a week. Both services land at the small port of Sape on the east coast of Sumbawa. HOW TO TRAVEL TO SUMBAWA FROM BALI

Padangbai – labuhan lombok – poto tano sumbawa – maluk sumbawa – sekongkang sumbawa, 1 – sumbawa travel by motorbike (around 12h) itinerary here.

First thing is getting to Padangbai to get the ferry (leaving around every hour, 4,5h duration). Prices here There’s a police checkpoint at the entrance make sure you have international driver’s license and registration of vehicle document.

Once in Lombok you have to make it to harbor on the other side of the island (Labuhan Lombok, 2,5h duration). Watch out the truck drivers can be crazy on the road.

At the harbor get the boat to Poto Tano Sumbawa (1,5h duration, departure every hour or so). The ride is pretty funny with the Indonesian pop singers. Once in Poto Tano Sumbawa you have to drive all the way down to Sekongkang Sumbawa (2,5h). Make sure you have enough petrol for the road if you drive at night as everything closes early and the only petrol stations you can find are in Taliwang and Maluk Sumbawa !

The ninth largest in Indonesia, Sumbawa is a deceptively big island, slightly larger than Flores and almost 50 percent bigger than far more popular Bali and Lombok combined — and with less than a quarter of their combined population. It is a big call to say Sumbawa is the most strangely shaped island in the country — Sulawesi, anyone? — but its peculiar outline contains some truly beautiful scenery and is home to more than a million friendly and welcoming Indonesians.

There’s an airport more or less at either end of the island. The network of roads, by Indonesian standards, is excellent. It’s certainly better than Bali’s for example: It’s in largely good condition and suffers a fraction of the traffic. Regular ferry connections run from either end — in the west to Lombok and the east to Flores — and there is frequent and relatively comfortable bus transport from one end to the other. All these factors come together to make Sumbawa a no-brainer for overland travellers making their way across the archipelago.

Save for the two surfing regions, there are virtually no foreign tourists here. When we say none, we don’t mean “not too many” or “fewer than Lombok or Flores” — we mean NONE. Sumbawa: the ultimate Indonesian island getaway

I’ve visited my fair share of beach resorts and usually, there’s a certain rhythm you get into while visiting one of them. You wake up early, hit the breakfast buffet then go back to your room to get your swimmers on and lather up with sunscreen . Then you head down to the pool or beach to read books and swim until dinner time. You go to sleep then wake up the next day and do it all over again. A holiday like that isn’t bad, by any means, but a trip to Sumbawa will turn everything you know about a beachy island getaway on its head!

Getting to this massive, remote island is a journey all in itself. For us, it began at the domestic airport in Denpasar , a hive of activity and smiling Indonesian locals on the move. If you love to travel, you’ll love the feeling of the airport as it’s straight out of your quirky travel dreams, a melting pot of sounds, sights and smells. From here you fly to Lombok , an island in West Nusa Tenggara which is home to some 3.17 million Indonesians. A driver will take you on a 2-3 hour drive to the coastline where you wait for the local fast boat, sheltered in a large open-faced tin shed. The fast boat takes around 2 hours to arrive at Sumbawa and, depending on where you’re staying, the drive to your resort will add an extra hour or so onto the end of the journey.

It’s a long journey, but it’s an incredible adventure making your way there. Especially because you’re off the main tourist track, which means you get to meet many beautiful Indonesian people (and incredibly cute little kids!) and see how they live, shop, eat, play and dress away from the very touristy areas like Kuta.

Sumbawa is huge, at 5,448 km 2  (5,965 sq miles) it is three times the size of Lombok! The landscape is dramatic, a beautiful mix of volcanic ridges, jungle and rice fields combined with impossibly perfect white-sandy beaches and bright blue ocean. The surf is incredible and, no doubt, the lack of other surfers makes it a haven for those chasing uncrowded swell.

The island is much less developed than other areas of Indonesia and the people survive on a much smaller income, sometimes burdened by the lack of food due to poor crops. A trip to the local market will give you an insight into the simple way of life here. Food, including fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, is laid out on wooden slats with no refrigeration and flies are casually brushed away using home-made swatters. Little kids run around the market smiling, playing with each other and laughing while the women of the market chat, huge smiles across their faces as they share stories and catch up on gossip.

I was walking through the market, chased by three of the funniest little kids, taking photos of the food and market layout. A few of the women saw my camera and start calling out, laughing they grabbed the only man in sight and pulled him toward me, motioning for me to take his photo. While he posed very handsomely next to his scooter they all laughed and smiled, it was such a good-heartened community feel. Quite a few people, mostly men, funnily enough, stopped me that day and asked me to take their photo! A lot of the younger men loved posing, trying to channel their inner super-model no doubt.

There’s an effortless feel on the island, like nobody is really in a hurry and there’s nowhere to be but where they are right now. There are no signs of stress or sadness, everyone just goes about their business and stops for a talk and a laugh when they can. It gives the entire island a relaxed charm.

The beaches in Sumbawa are unlike any I’ve seen before. If you take a trip out to Scar Reef you’ll be met with a seemingly endless stretch of white sand and clear water that leads out to the very sharp reef, a known hot-spot for great surf. The reef is razor-sharp and more than a few have come off second best against it. The amazing thing about spots like these is that you can go there and not see another tourist, except for the few brave surfers.  If you visit the secret beach and you’ll be able to snorkel in the waves, chasing brightly coloured fish around and exploring the coral.

So often when we go to an island resort it’s overrun by other visitors and we can get into that monotonous holiday routine. In Sumbawa, you couldn’t get into that routine for very long as there is so much to see and do. There are mountains to climb, jungles to explore, hidden waterfalls to find and jump off, beach after beach to discover and so many unique local experiences to be had.

The place is so laid back they sell fireworks to anybody who asks at the local shop. We stopped and stocked up on an absolutely ridiculous amount of fireworks, which we let off safely on the beach in front of the resort, lighting up the ocean and night sky. Everyone laughed so hard that for a while there we completely forgot about the rest of the world and felt completely wild and free.

Because the island is so big and there is so much to see and do, the best way to see and experience it all is to stay at a resort that has drivers to take you around. The term resort is used quite loosely as it won’t be anything like what you may be used to if you’ve visited the Whitsundays or stayed in Seminyak. Everything in Sumbawa is a little bit run-down and that’s what gives it a unique, beachy, laid-back feel.

We stayed at Nomad’s Tropical Resort and really loved it. It is right on the beach so you wake up every morning and are greeted to a beautiful place with very few visitors around, a huge mountain to the right and blue water in front. You can eat every meal looking at this view and, trust me, you won’t get sick of it. The traditional local food, prepared at the resort, is really delicious so be sure to try as many of the local dishes as possible.

There’s a lot to love about Sumbawa and it really should be on every travel-lovers bucket list. It’s a holiday that takes you back to the bare necessities; a bed to sleep on, delicious food, friendly people to meet and absolutely beautiful scenery everywhere you look. You’ll experience the raw, natural beauty of a remote island and the friendly, warm welcome of local Sumbawans.

Sumbawa has to be one of my favourite holiday destinations because it is so remote and unspoiled, it’s the perfect mix of adventure and activities combined with relaxation and perfect beaches. Not only do you get to see a beautiful place but you also get to experience another culture, a holiday like that is priceless.

Bima Travel Guide: The Gateway to Eastern Sumbawa

Bima is the largest city on the island of Sumbawa, and sits on the island’s east coast. Many travellers will end up spending some time here if they are crossing Sumbawa. That said, there is not a huge amount to make it a travel destination in its own right. The range of hotels and restaurants isn’t great, but there is enough to keep visitors comfortable for a day or two. Read on for advice on getting to Bima, where to stay and what to do.

Getting to Bima

As the biggest city on Sumbawa, Bima is well connected by road to other major points on the island. The Trans-Sumbawa Highway is in good condition, making bus travel relatively comfortable. Sumbawa Besar , the western gateway to the island, is 6-7 hours away by bus. Sape, the easternmost port on Sumbawa, is around 90 minutes away. There are regular buses to and from both places throughout the day.

Getting to Bima by plane

Bima’s small airport lies out of town to the west, and makes the city easy to reach. It has regular connections to Denpasar, Makassar and Praya, meaning it is easy to reach from Bali, Sulawesi and Lombok.

Getting to Bima by boat

Bima is an important port for the island of Sumbawa and is well connected to other ports in Indonesia. The harbour is a couple of kilometres west of the town centre. Pelni ferries run to Makassar on Sulawesi and Kupang on Timor twice a week. The ferry to Makassar takes around 30 hours and to Kupang it takes around 40 hours. There is also a weekly ferry to Surabaya on Java, which takes around 50 hours, and to Waingapu on Sumba, which takes around 13 hours. Tickets can be bought from the Pelni office in Bima, which is on Jl Kesatria, or through travel agents in town.

What to do in Bima

As mentioned above, Bima is not a great tourist destination in itself. However, as the largest town on Sumbawa, it is a good base for exploring harder-to-reach parts of the island. There are also a couple of things to do in the town itself.

The Sultan’s Palace

If you have some time to kill in Bima, the Sultan’s Palace is an option for an afternoon. This well-preserved, largely wooden structure dates from the 1930s and is the former home of the Sultan of Bima. It contains exhibitions of royal and martial paraphernalia and various other odds and ends connected to Bimanese history. There are even some waxworks decked out in traditional costumes. The palace costs Rp 3,000 to get in. The whole place is a little odd and run down but that’s part of the charm. A member of staff may offer to give you a guided tour in exchange for a small tip.

The area around Bima is called Wawo. The area is famous for its traditional architecture and houses with thatched roofs. As ever in Indonesia, the easiest way to explore is to rent a motorbike and visit local villages at your own pace. However, you can also spot them through the bus window on the route between Bima and Sape.

Mount Tambora

This mighty volcano in the north of Sumbawa changed the world’s weather when it erupted in 1815, causing a global ‘Year Without a Summer’. Conditions were so gloomy in Switzerland that Mary Shelley was inspired to write Frankenstein. Bima is often used as a base for visiting Mount Tambora as it has the closest airport, but it’s still a good five-hour drive away. The volcano is seriously remote and is an arduous climb, but is visited occasionally by adventurous climbers.

Where to stay in Bima

Bima does not have a brilliant range of hotels. Most visitors are business travellers, and the hotels reflect this; they tend to be somewhat sterile and overpriced. That being said, it’s a large town and you won’t be stranded without somewhere to stay.

Hotel Lambitu has a wide range of rooms to suit all prices, including the best budget rooms in town. It’s a clean, modern hotel in a large building in the centre of town. Staff are very friendly and will do their best to help you organise activities or transport. Rooms start at Rp 160,000; suites are available from Rp 350,000.

A decent mid-range option in the centre of town is Lila Graha . This is a large hotel, with a gloomy maze of corridors leading off into lots of rooms. The rooms are old-fashioned and not particularly cosy, with white tiled walls and floors and dingy bathrooms. However, they are clean enough, and the hotel has a convenient central location. There is also an attached restaurant, which does decent Chinese and Indonesian food. Be warned, though, that the restaurant shuts up shop by about 9pm, as most do in Bima. A double room costs Rp 200,000.

The best hotel in town, and also the most expensive, is Marina . This is the closest thing to a modern hotel you’ll find in Bima. As with all the hotels, it caters mainly to business travellers. However, rooms are modern and clean, there’s a decent restaurant attached, and staff are friendly.

Where to eat in Bima

The choice of Western-style restaurants in Bima is even more limited than the range of hotels. You may find that you end up eating in your hotel restaurant most of the time. However, there are lots of warungs all around town, serving authentic Indonesian food at very cheap prices.

Final thoughts

Bima is not a great tourist destination in itself. Most visitors are either on business or passing through as they cross Sumbawa overland. However, it’s not an awful place to be for a day or two. The Sultan’s Palace in town is worth a visit, and the city is a good base for those adventurous enough to tackle the mighty Mount Tambora. The largest town on Sumbawa, Bima has a limited but adequate range of hotels.

Hi ! I just wanted to inform you that the Marina hôtel is really not good anymore. I couldn’t find how old is your article but the Marina is super dirty now ! We booked a night here even if it’s a bit above our budget to “make sure we don’t have bad surprises”… what a bad surprise it was ! Smelly small and disgusting rooms, I even found cigarettes buds on the ground. Otherwise thank you for all the informations on your website ! I was wondering where can I rent a scooter in Bima or in Sape please ? Thank you for your help, Maë.

8 Pantai di Indonesia yang Jadi Lokasi Surfing Internasional

Baru-baru ini, Indonesia menjadi tuan rumah World Surfing League (WSL) Krui Pro 2024. Acara tersebut merupakan bagian dari event surfing tahunan bertaraf internasional yang dilaksanakan di Krui, Pesisir Barat, Provinsi Lampung. Ternyata, bukan pertama kalinya, banyak event surfing internasional yang digelar di Indonesia.

Sebagai negara kepulauan, Indonesia memiliki banyak pilihan pantai yang mendukung untuk surfing , terutama di Bali. Namun, artikel kali ini justru akan memberikan daftar pantai di luar Bali yang pernah menjadi tempat berlangsungnya event surfing internasional. Kira-kira pantai mana saja, ya?

1. Pantai Matanurung, Aceh

Jauh di sisi barat daya Indonesia, tepatnya Kepulauan Simeulue terdapat Pantai Matanurung. Terletak di Desa Matanurung, Kecamatan Teupah Tengah, Kabupaten Simeulue, Provinsi Aceh, lokasinya terpisah dari pulau utama dan dekat Bandara Lasikin.

Ketinggian ombak di Pantai Matanurung mencapai 5 meter dan membentuk gelombang ombak bergulung yang disebut long tube barrels . Jenis ombak seperti itu kerap diburu peselancar dunia. Selain itu, masyarakat sekitar dari orang dewasa maupun anak-anak banyak yang sudah mahir berselancar.

Pantai Matanurung menjadi tuan rumah Simeulue Pro 2018 yang digelar oleh WSL dan Asian Surfing Championship (ASC). Event tersebut telah berlangsung pada 31 Agustus—4 September 2018. Berarti, jika kamu ingin berselancar di sana bisa datang antara bulan-bulan tersebut setiap tahunnya.

2. Pantai Sorake, Sumatra Utara

Beralih ke Pulau Nias, terdapat Pantai Sorake di Botohilitano, Kecamatan Fanayama, Kabupaten Nias Selatan, Sumatra Utara. Pengunjung dapat ke pantai karang tersebut melalui jalur udara di Bandara Kualanamu menuju Bandara Binaka, Nias. Waktu tempuhnya 55 menit, lalu perlu perjalanan darat 2—3 jam untuk tiba di kawasan pantai.

Pantai Sorake menjadi pantai terbaik untuk surfing yang telah diakui. Bahkan masuk dalam 10 besar tempat surfing terbaik di dunia, bahkan di urutan kedua setelah Hawaii. Sepanjang Juni—Juli, tinggi ombaknya dapat mencapai 10—12 meter, lho.

Pada 2024, pantai ini kembali tuan rumah WSL QS 5000 Nias Pro 2024 yang akan berlangsung pada 8—15 Juni. Sebelumnya, berbagai event surfing lokal maupun internasional juga digelar di sini. Seperti WSL Nias Pro 2018 dan Nias Selatan Open Surfing Contest 2017.

3. Pantai Katiet, Sumatra Barat

Sedikit ke selatan menuju Kepulauan Mentawai, ada Pantai Katiet yang menjadi andalan untuk lokasi surfing . Lokasinya di Dusun Katiet, Desa Bosua, Kecamatan Sipora Selatan, Kabupaten Kepulauan Mentawai, Sumatra Barat. Pantai ini dapat dijangkau melalui jalur laut menggunakan kapal cepat maupun jalur udara.

Pantai Katiet memiliki pasir putih, airnya biru kehijauan, dan dikelilingi tebing. Ombaknya dapat mencapai ketinggian hingga 10 meter dan konsisten. Pantas saja menjadi salah satu wisata surfing favorit para peselancar dari berbagai negara.

Pada 2016, pantai ini menjadi tempat berlangsungnya Mentawai Rip Curl Pro. Bukan nama pantainya yang terkenal, tapi Lance’s Right (HT’s), tempat selancar di lepas Pulau Sipura. Di sekitar resor tersebut, ada sejumlah vila yang kerap jadi tempat menginap peselancar.

4. Pantai Tanjung Setia, Lampung

Masih di Sumatra dan sekitarnya, pantai lain yang menjadi tempat surfing internasional adalah Pantai Tanjung Setia. Berlokasi di Desa Tanjung Setia, Pesisir Selatan, Kabupaten Lampung Barat, Provinsi Lampung. Pantai ini mudah dijangkau melalui jalur utama Jalan Trans Sumatra, jadi gak perlu takut tersesat.

Daya tarik utama bagi peselancar yang ombaknya mencapai 6—7 meter dengan panjang 200 meter. Tepi pantainya berpasir putih dan banyak pohon kelapa yang membuatnya teduh. Didukung pula dengan beberapa surf camp di sekitar pantai.

Pantai Tanjung Setia sudah menjadi langganan WSL Krui Pro sejak 2017. Tahun ini pula menjadi tuan rumah kejuaraan selancar internasional tersebut, berlangsung pada 28 Mei—4 Juni 2024. Ombak yang ideal untuk berselancar kerap kali terjadi pada Juni—Juli setiap tahunnya.

5. Pantai Watu Karung, Jawa Timur

Selain keempat lokasi di sekitar Sumatra, Pulau Jawa juga punya pantai yang ideal untuk berselancar, yakni Pantai Watu Karung. Berlokasi di Pringkuku, Ketro, Watukarung, Kecamatan Pacitan, Kabupaten Pacitan, Jawa Timur, pantai ini dapat dijangkau dengan mudah melalui jalur darat dari pusat Kota Pacitan maupun Trenggalek.

Ombak di Pantai Watu Karung ketinggiannya mulai 4 meter. Selain itu, pemandangannya semakin menarik dengan beberapa pulau karang dan pasir putih. Airnya yang kebiruan dan kamu bisa menyusuri pantai ini melalui Kali Cokel menggunakan perahu motor.

Meski namanya gak setenar Tanjung Setia, tapi Pantai Watu Karung sebagai tuan rumah acara surfing internasional pada 16—20 Agustus 2017 silam. Pantai tersebut menjadi saksi bisu kemenangan Rio Waida, peselancar Indonesia kelahiran Jepang yang tinggal di Bali. Ia berhasil meraih penghargaan tertinggi pada Hello Pacitan Pro QS1.000 2017.

6. Pantai Plengkung, Jawa Timur

Masih di Jawa Timur, tapi pantai kali ini dekat dengan Bali, tepatnya Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur. Terdapat Pantai Plengkung yang dikenal pula dengan G-Land, bagian dari Taman Nasional Alas Purwo. Secara administratif, pantai ini berada di Dusun Purworejo, Desa Kalipait, Kecamatan Tegaldlimo, Kabupaten Banyuwangi.

Pantai Plengkung memiliki ombak tinggi, memanjang, dan berkecepatan tinggi, sehingga cocok untuk berselancar. Bahkan, pantai ini menjadi satu dari tujuh spot surfing dengan ombak terbaik setelah Hawaii. Gulungan ombak di pantai tersebut dipengaruhi oleh arus Antartika yang terbawa oleh Samudra Hindia, sehingga ideal bagi peselancar.

Beberapa acara surfing pernah digelar di pantai ini, seperti Quiksilver/ROXY Pro G-Land 2022 yang termasuk agenda Championship Tour. Ajang lomba selancar lainnya, seperti Banyuwangi G-Land International Team Challenge dan Da Hui Pro Surfing World Championship. Waktu terbaik untuk berselancar di sini sekitar Juli—September.

7. Pantai Yoyo, Nusa Tenggara Barat

Artikel ini mengulas pantai di luar Bali, maka mari melompat ke Nusa Tenggara Barat. Ada Pantai Yoyo dengan nama lain Pantai Rantung yang terkenal dengan gulungan ombaknya yang menawan untuk peselancar. Terletak di Sekongkang Bawah, Kecamatan Sekongkang, Kabupaten Sumbawa Barat, Nusa Tenggara Barat.

Ombak di Pantai Yoyo mencapai 3 meter dan tidak mudah pecah. Hal ini menjadikannya sebagai tuan rumah West Sumbawa Pro 2018 pada 8—12 September. Tercatat, sekitar 64 peselancar dari 12 negara yang mengikuti acara internasional tersebut.

8. Pantai Amban, Papua Barat

Satu lagi pantai di Indonesia selain Bali yang pernah menjadi tempat surfing internasional, yakni Pantai Amban. Pantai ini berada di Desa Amban, Kecamatan Manokwari, Kabupaten Manokwari, Provinsi Papua Barat. Jaraknya sekitar 14 km dari Bandara Rendani dan dapat dijangkau dengan mudah melalui jalur darat.

Pantai Amban terpilih menjadi lokasi Manokwari Pro oleh WSL pada 29 November—3 Desember 2023. Di balik cuacanya yang mudah berubah, ombak Pantai Amban memiliki daya tarik tersendiri bagi para peselancar. Selain itu, pemandangannya juga gak kalah menakjubkan, terutama saat matahari terbenam.

Sekarang kamu sudah tahu deretan pantai di Indonesia yang pernah menjadi tuan rumah event surfing internasional, kecuali Bali. Para peselancar dunia dapat menjumpai gulungan ombak yang ideal dari ujung barat hingga ujung timur Indonesia. Keren!
