Amanda Goad is the most amazing recruiter I have worked with. She is the most responsive and go-getter. She is in constant contact with you or hospitals to get you offers and/or advocating for you. She is super motivated and helpful. If you have the opportunity to use her, you will not regret it.

travel nurse jobs hospice

Needed to move across country to be next to my partner, but blindly jumping into a full time job for a hospital system I was not familiar with was out of the question. Host Healthcare (Natalie G specifically) stood by me and helped me fulfill my absurdly specific requests. I was a first time time traveler and I couldn't have made it without the support I received!
Just finished my first contract with Host Healthcare (fifth overall) and they were amazing! Specifically my recruiter Jenny Berroth. Jenny was so helpful and easy to communicate with. I had a couple issues come up and Jenny was all over them and took care of everything so I could just concentrate on being a nurse, while she handled the rest. I can’t recommend Host and Jenny enough! You have to give Host and Jenny a try, you’ll be glad you did!

In the world of nursing, becoming a hospice nurse can be one of the most fulfilling and rewarding career paths. This role involves caring for patients who are in the final stages of their lives and providing compassionate and empathetic care when they need it most. And now, the travel sector has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for travel hospice nurses. Travel hospice care nurses are in high demand with our aging population, and taking on travel hospice nurse jobs can leave you feeling fulfilled. Whether you're curious about the role of a hospice nurse or are already a nurse looking to transition into travel hospice care, Health Carousel Nursing & Allied Health can help.

Main Responsibilities of Hospice Nurses

A hospice nurse and a palliative nurse are similar but not entirely the same thing. Hospice care is for when the patient has less than six months left, while anyone with a chronic condition can be on palliative care to ease their pain and make them more comfortable. Depending on the patients you're seeing, the core duties and responsibilities of a travel hospice palliative care nurse are:

  • Assessing and monitoring patients' medical condition and comfort levels
  • Administering medications and treatments to control pain and other symptoms
  • Educating patients and caregivers on the dying process and what to expect
  • Providing personal care such as bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Offering emotional support through active listening and conversations
  • Coordinating care services and equipment needs
  • Documenting observations, interventions, and changes in patient's status
  • Collaborating with physicians, social workers, therapists, and other team members

You'll often make visits to patients' homes, long-term care facilities, or other settings outside of a hospital; it all depends on where the patient is living at the time of care. You'll work with other healthcare professionals, like a home health case manager, to ensure the proper care is being provided. The care and instruction you provide enable families and home caretakers to feel equipped to address their loved one's needs during this trying time.

The Importance and Impact of Hospice Care

Hospice care allows terminal patients to spend their final days in comfort, dignity, and peace. As a hospice palliative care nurse, the care you provide not only improves your patients' quality of life but also positively impacts their loved ones as you guide everyone on how to navigate the end-of-life process.

Your expertise in pain management enables patients to spend meaningful time with family free from distressing symptoms. With travel hospice nurse jobs , you'll empower caregivers with the knowledge to participate actively in the caregiving process. Your compassion and counsel provide emotional and spiritual support during an extremely difficult time.

Hospice nurses affirm life and neither hasten nor postpone death. You help patients live life as fully as possible and in comfort until the end and make the experience of dying more humane. Your role is incredibly meaningful as you enable patients to have closure, share last messages, and say goodbye on their own terms without feeling excruciating pain.

Required Skills and Qualifications for Hospice Nurses

Before you take the role of a travel palliative care nurse, there are several things you'll need to do and skills you'll want to have. To succeed as a hospice nurse, you should possess certain skills and fulfill the necessary qualifications , including:

  • RN License: You must have an active registered nursing license in your state.
  • Compassion: A caring, empathetic nature is essential when working closely with the terminally ill.
  • Communication Skills: You need to sensitively listen, offer advice, educate patients and families, and collaborate with your interdisciplinary team.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: You must tailor treatments and modify care plans to meet each patient's changing needs toward the end of life.
  • Physical Stamina: You should be able to perform physically demanding tasks like lifting patients.
  • Organizational Skills: You'll coordinate details and services for numerous patients at once.
  • Emotional Stability: Dealing continually with loss while supporting distressed families requires emotional strength.

Hospice care nurses can also benefit from experience working with terminally ill patients in settings like oncology, ICU/CCU, or med surg. Certifications in hospice and palliative care, such as CHPN or CHPPN , demonstrate your expertise.

With your specialized skills and dedicated compassion, hospice nurses greatly improve the quality of life for patients facing life-limiting illness or injury.

Exploring the Opportunities for Hospice Nurse Travel Jobs

Hospice care aims to provide compassionate end-of-life care and pain management to terminally ill patients, regardless of their age. Travel hospice care nurses play a pivotal role in providing this care and improving quality of life. As demand for hospice services grows, so does the need for qualified hospice nurses across the country.

Travel nursing positions allow nurses to take on temporary contract roles in various locations. For hospice nurses, travel jobs can provide exciting opportunities to gain experience in different hospice settings while meeting the rising demand for end-of-life care.

The Growing Demand for Travel Nurses in Hospice Care

The number of hospice patients in the U.S. has more than doubled over the past decade. At the same time, there is a nationwide shortage of hospice and palliative care nurses. These trends have created a high demand for travel nurses with hospice experience.

Travel jobs allow nurses to take on 13-week contracts at understaffed hospice organizations across the country. Hospices benefit by bringing in qualified staff to provide care quickly. Nurses benefit by gaining experience and having flexibility in their work.

Many hospice companies now rely on travel nurses to supplement their staffing in this emotionally challenging role. Whether it’s filling a temporary need or a permanent position, travel nurses can help ensure patients receive continuous, quality end-of-life care while growing their travel nursing career .

Deciding If a Travel Job Is Right For You

Hospice nurse travel jobs allow you to gain experience in different care settings. From home hospice to inpatient facilities, you have the ability to work as a hospice palliative care nurse wherever you want.

Like most things in life, the travel nurse lifestyle also comes with unique rewards and challenges. While many people believe that the advantages of a travel hospice nurse greatly outweigh the cons, it's important to know both so you can make the right choice for yourself and your family.

  • Gain experience with different patient populations and hospice practices
  • Earn higher pay than staff nurse roles – some over $90/hour
  • Get housing and travel allowances/reimbursements
  • Pursue opportunities across the U.S. without relocating permanently
  • Frequent moves and absence of community roots
  • Continuous licensing requirements across states
  • Short-term contracts may mean instability
  • It can be emotionally challenging work

What to Know About Hospice Travel Nurse Assignments

  • December 20, 2022

Hospice travel nurses provide end-of-life care for patients not currently undergoing treatment for an illness. The job of a hospice travel nurse is to provide comfort and care for patients who have been given a short period of time left to live. Because patients are not actively undergoing treatment, hospice nurses help patients manage pain and symptoms while also providing support for the patient’s family.

Here’s everything you need to know about hospice travel nurse assignments and travel nurse contracts .

What does a hospice travel nurse assignment entail?

Because hospice travel nurse assignments are specifically about providing end-of-life or palliative care for patients, a hospice travel nurse’s main responsibility is to ensure patient comfort. Responsibilities will include taking vitals, engaging with the patient to see how they are feeling, and monitoring the patient’s eating and sleeping.

Hospice nurses may also manage a patient’s medication, determine which medical supplies are needed for patient care, and coordinate with the patient’s doctors. In addition to those medical components of the job, hospice nurses also act as the emotional support system for both the patient and the family, connecting them to necessary care, resources, and information.

Where do hospice travel nurses work?

Hospice travel nurses can work in various settings, making this type of work a unique travel nurse assignment. Hospice travel nurses may work in their patients’ homes, in a specialized care facility, a nursing home, a long-term care facility, or a hospital. It depends on the patient’s level of care needed and the type of assignment.

How is a hospice travel nurse assignment different from other travel nurse assignments?

A hospice travel nurse assignment differs from other travel nurse assignments because hospice nurses do not treat an illness as they would in a hospital. Instead, they provide ongoing care to ensure a patient’s overall comfort. It’s an essential role to be played, and it requires delicacy, compassion, and an understanding of the fullness of the patient’s needs.

How long are hospice travel nurse assignments?

Hospice travel nurse assignments vary in length, just like any other travel nurse assignment. While the most common length of assignment for a travel nurse is about 13 or 14 weeks, this depends greatly on the location and type of work you will be completing.

If you’re looking for a hospice travel nurse assignment, check our job board (and specify a “hospice” specialty) for the latest travel nurse jobs in the top travel nurse locations !

How much do hospice travel nurse assignments pay?

Hospice travel nurse assignments can offer competitive pay, especially depending on the location and the organization. Your pay will largely depend on your contract, where you plan to work, and the length of the assignment.

Here’s everything that goes into a travel nurse salary pay scale and how to understand your pay package .

What are the benefits and challenges of a hospice travel nurse assignment?

Because hospice nursing jobs require the nurse to be hands-on and involved in every aspect of patient care, a hospice travel nurse assignment is a great opportunity to develop your skills and become a more seasoned nurse. Hospice travel nurses have more autonomy because they don’t work inside of a hospital—and some nurses may prefer this type of work environment.

On the flip side, hospice travel nursing can be challenging because of the emotional toll it can take on providers. The work is very emotionally demanding, and working from a patient’s home can be difficult, especially if the patient’s home environment is unstable or family members are difficult.

How can I find a hospice travel nurse assignment?

If you think a hospice travel nurse assignment is a good fit for you and is aligned with your goals, then we’ve got you covered. Visit our job board to find active and available hospice travel nurse assignments (just specify “hospice” as a filter for the list). At Nurse First, we’re committed to providing the best job offerings with all the information you need to succeed in your assignment.

Miracles of St. Matrona in Our Days

Stories from letters to the editors of pravoslavie.ru.

“ Of course she helped me, and not just once!”

The most important moments in my life:

—Through her holy prayers, I obtained my own apartment in my favorite region of Moscow (there was a real possibility of having to move to another end of the city).

—I found a very good job, my dream job (this was twelve years ago, but I am still working here!).

I went out during one of our lunch breaks for a stroll, and prayed to Matronyshka for guidance. And when I turned the corner I practically ran head-on into my future wife. As it turns out, she was just returning from Pokrov Convent [where the relics of St. Matrona are], where she was praying about the same thing that I was praying about.

Well in fact Blessed Matrona is my favorite and dearest saint!

Ekaternia Doroshenkova

“ Dry roses sprouted fresh growth.”

Hello, brothers and sisters. I would like to tell you the story of a miracle. My mother told me about it. In 2012, a particle of the relics of St. Matrona of Moscow was brought to us in Krasnoyarsk [Siberia]. People waited in line for several hours in order to venerate her relics. While standing in line my mother heard this story from a nurse who worked in the oncology ward. This nurse has venerated St. Matrona for a long time, prays to her, and has been to her reliquary in the Moscow Pokrov Convent several times.

At the convent they gave her some dry roses that were blessed on the relics of the saint, and she brought these to the dying woman. In the train (it takes four whole days to travel to us by train) a miracle happened: Those dry rose began to sprout fresh growth. And when she arrived home and gave the roses to the patient, she was healed.

Wondrous are Thy works, O Lord! Holy Blessed Matronushka, pray to Christ for us!

Ekaterina Doroshenkova

“ I immediately understood that this money was brought help you!”

I would like to share another little miracle of my own.

In 2010, after a long interval, I had the opportunity to finish the last year of the university. They were letting me finish only for money. With God’s help I finished the first semester. I borrowed money from my employer with a year’s postponement of repay. I wanted to take out a bank loan for the second and last semester. But two different banks denied me credit.

I had no one to count on for help, because my parents live very modestly.

In just a few days a colleague at work (with whom I was not even close friends, but she knew about my situation with the tuition), brought me the sufficient amount on loan.

As it turns out, her mother had the day before brought her this money, which she had saved up just for her. She didn’t need the money at the moment, and there was nothing to spend it on. She said, “I immediately understood that this money was brought to help you!”

This is how Blessed Matrona helped me through kind people. I received very obvious help through her prayers throughout that school year.

Blessed Matrona, pray to Christ God for us!

Tatiana Ketova

“ My pain went away in literally just a few minutes.”

Not long ago, Matronyshka helped me: My relative went on a pilgrimage to Matushka Matronushka and brought us blessed oil as a gift. I had baked pies in the oven for the children when they arrived and in the process burned my finger on the hot baking pan. A wide, white strip appeared immediately. In a panic, I didn’t know what to use on it—a raw potato, cold water, butter, oil all passed through my mind…

But I had read contrary opinions about all of these cures at one time. Then a precise thought came into my mind: “oil from Matronushka”. I applied the oil to the burn with prayer, stood a few minutes before the icons, prayed some more (I asked that at least to take the pain away, because I had to go to work that evening, and I worked in rubber gloves with water).

After these few minutes the pain had gone away completely. I finished baking the pies, went to work, and redid various things; the burned area quickly turned red, and the expected large boils did not appear. It all went away calmly and unnoticeably thanks to Matronushka.
