Wondering what the best Mexico City airport transportation options are? This guide outlines all the safest ways to get from the Mexico City airport to your hotel or Airbnb.

travel from mexico city airport to hotel

One of the most important logistical details of any trip is how you’ll get from the airport to your hotel when you arrive at your destination. After a long, exhausting day of travel, the last thing you want to do is piecemeal your transportation plan together upon arrival. Secure transportation is paramount.

Planning ahead will help you avoid being overcharged, protect you from potential scammers, and save you a lot of time and energy. Mexico City is one of the biggest cities in the world and the transportation options may appear complex at first glance.

This Mexico City Airport transportation guide will give you an overview of all the different options to help you choose the one that best fits your budget, comfort level, and travel style.

Where is the Mexico City International Airport?

Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX) is located about 5 miles from the city’s centro histórico (the city center) and about 8 miles from the popular neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa.

Though the airport is quite close to these popular areas, the travel time may be anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

The Mexico City airport is the biggest and busiest airport in the country and a central travel hub for not only Mexico but all of Latin America.

It processes over 100,000 travelers daily and is the hub for airlines such as Aeroméxico, Aeromar, Volaris, and VivaAerobús.

Traveling soon? Don’t forget to buy travel insurance for Mexico. Insurance gives you peace of mind, knowing you can get the help you need if anything goes wrong. SafetyWing is the provider that I recommend.

Taxi Services

Average cost: $250 MXN to $500 MXN, depending on your destination.

If you ask me, official airport taxis are the best option for airport transportation in CDMX because they are abundant and easy to use.

When you exit the baggage claim area, you will see booths selling tickets for “Taxi Seguro” (or something similar). This is where you purchase a taxi ticket.

Fares are fixed and based on which zone of the city you are traveling to. Purchasing a ticket from one of these booths will ensure you get a fair price and are placed in a legitimate taxi.

Several authorized taxi companies operate within the airport, each of which is legitimate. Some offer more luxurious vehicles, and some even offer female drivers and provide services exclusively to women.

In my experience, you can’t go wrong with any of them, but the prices may vary depending on your choice.

If you’re a budget traveler, know that taxi fares will be slightly elevated when you depart from the airport. Budget accordingly, and know that the rest of your transportation expenses will be lower. It’s worth paying a little more to use secure transportation in Mexico City after a long day of travel.

Expect it to cost about 250 to 350 pesos to get from the airport to the Condesa/Reforma area (where many Mexico City hotels are located).

Once you purchase your taxi ticket, an attendant will direct you to a taxi queue where you’ll wait in line with other travelers until a car becomes available. Be warned. These taxi lines can be long if you’re traveling during rush hour. Expect to wait at least 30 minutes.

If you have a lot of luggage, keep a few coins handy to tip the attendants who help you load your bags into the taxi. You don’t need to tip the taxi driver when you reach your destination unless they help you with your luggage.

travel from mexico city airport to hotel

I’ve heard a lot of conflicting accounts of travelers trying to use Uber from the Mexico City airport. Many have been successful, but there are potential obstacles, too.

Uber is not technically permitted to operate from the Mexico City airport, so it may be tricky to get one.

I’ve taken Uber from the airport myself, and the drivers always instructed me to go to the “Departures” area to be picked up. However, the last time I did this was in 2019, and it sounds like things may have changed.

I polled my Female Travelers in Mexico Facebook Group to see what experiences others have had using Uber, and several people reported having successfully taken Uber from the airport as recently as this week.

On the other hand, I’ve also heard of travelers having drivers cancel on them or asking them to meet somewhere a couple of blocks from the airport (not ideal if you have a lot of bulky luggage or fly in late at night).

These inconsistencies in rules and experiences are pretty common in Mexico– it just loves to keep us guessing! In my experience with other things of this nature, there may be long bouts of time where you can get Ubers from the airport without issue, and then suddenly, there will be a crackdown that makes it more challenging.

A similar thing happened with the 180-day immigration visa in 2021– for months, travelers reported being granted as little as a few days… but then a couple of months later, everything went back to normal, and now everyone seems to get 180 days by default.

I digress. The point is these things are constantly in flux.

If you’re the type of traveler who appreciates a concrete plan, I’d avoid Uber and take a taxi. A taxi may cost a couple of dollars more, but as long as you buy your ticket from one of the booths inside the terminal, Mexico City airport taxis are perfectly safe .

But, I know many travelers really prefer Uber. If this is you, go ahead and give it a try. Just know that there could be hangups, and taxis are always there as a backup!

When it comes time to return to the airport at the end of your trip, you shouldn’t have any problem getting Uber to drop you off.

downtown Mexico City is only about 5 miles from the Mexico City airport and it is full of incredible monuments

Mexico City Airport Transfers

Average Cost: $450 MXN to $1000 MXN to downtown Mexico City , depending on vehicle size.

Airport shuttles typically cost a little more than a taxi or Uber, but they are really convenient, secure ground transportation, and come with great perks.

First, you can book them in advance, so you know a transfer will be waiting for you when you arrive– this saves you the hassle of having to even think about any other options. Plus, you won’t have to stop to get cash because you can pay for your shuttle online in advance.

A private transfer service usually offers nicer vehicles too, which means you’ll have more legroom and will inevitably be more comfortable– a nice perk after a long flight.

And finally, a professional driver will usually wait for you even if your arrival time changes.

Knowing a driver will be there to pick you up when you land offers enormous peace of mind in what can be a hectic experience (navigating immigration in a foreign language).

Airport Taxi Transfers is a great company that you can use to book airport shuttle services in cities around the world. Click here to reserve your Mexico City airport transfer!

Metro/Subway

Average cost: $5 MXN

Mexico City has an extensive metro network with lines that cover most of the city. This is definitely the cheapest way to get from the airport into downtown Mexico City and most of the other neighborhoods you might be headed to.

The Terminal Aérea metro station is located just outside of Terminal 1 at the Mexico City airport, making it a convenient way to get to and from the airport.

You can use Google Maps or Rome2Rio to plan your route to your accommodation, but I’ve outlined how to get to a couple of the most common destinations:

  • Condesa : To get to Condesa from the airport, take Line 5 from Terminal Aérea toward Pantitlán. At the Pantitlán station, transfer to Line 9 in the direction of Tacubaya and get off at the Chilpancingo station.
  • Centro Histórico : To get to Mexico City’s Zócalo from the airport, take metro Line 5 from the Terminal Aérea station toward Pantitlán. At the Pantitlán station, transfer to Line 1 toward Observatorio. Get off at the Pino Suárez station and walk North along Calle Pino Suárez for about 10 minutes to reach the Zócalo, also known as Plaza de La Constitución.

The metro is super economical (it costs 5 pesos) and it’s very efficient given that it enables you to avoid the city’s traffic congestion. However, it can be uncomfortably crowded at peak times.

This website has additional information on using the Mexico City metro and includes several maps of the metro system .

I’ve used the metro several times and had some unpleasant experiences (including my friend having his phone and wallet stolen), so I’ve decided I’d rather just take taxis or Uber. They may cost more, but to me, it’s worth it because they’re more comfortable and less stressful.

That said, the metro can still be a good option, and it’s definitely the best way to go for budget travelers (if you feel comfortable navigating metro systems).

Always be mindful of your surroundings and note how far the metro stations are from your final destination.

If you’re a novice solo female traveler arriving at the Mexico City airport late at night, I would advise against using the metro.

While there are metro cars exclusively for women , stepping off the metro into the shrouds of darkness isn’t advisable. I’d definitely splurge for a taxi in this scenario.

Local Bus Lines & Metrobus

Average cost: $5 – $10 MXN

There are all kinds of different local bus systems in Mexico, and you can use them to get to the airport. I have never done this because it’s the most confusing of the options on this list. But I wanted to list it just in case you want to try it.

Metrobus is one of the most popular types of buses in Mexico City and it stops at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of the airport.

To get from the airport to the city center, take Metrobus Line 4 from Terminal 1 toward San Lázaro. At San Lázaro, transfer to the Metro Line 1 toward Observatorio and get off at the Pino Suárez Station. From there, transfer to Metro Line 2 toward Cuatro Caminos and get off at the Zócalo station.

For more detail, use Rome2Rio or Google Maps to figure out how to get to and from the Mexico City airport using buses.

Long-haul Buses

Average cost: Anywhere from $300 MXN to $1500 MXN, depending on your destination and the level of service you opt for.

Depending on where you’re headed from Mexico City, you may be able to catch a bus there directly from the airport. There are regular departures for cities like Puebla, Queretaro, Cuernavaca, Córdoba, and more.

There are two bus stations attached to the Mexico City airport. One is near Terminal 1, by the ramp that leads to the international area of the airport. The other is in Terminal 2 near Gate D, between entrance 4 and the domestic arrivals exit.

If there aren’t direct buses from the airport to your next destination, you’ll have to find your way to the appropriate Mexico City bus station for the next leg of your journey.

Beyond the airport, there are four bus terminals in Mexico City:

  • Terminal de Autobuses Norte : This station has buses departing for areas north of Mexico City, including Queretaro, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, and San Luis Potosí.
  • Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros Oriente (TAPO): This station is very close to the Mexico City airport and has buses departing for destinations both east and south of Mexico City, including Oaxaca, Puebla, Xalapa, and more. The ADO bus line primarily operates out of this station.
  • Terminal de Autobuses del Sur (Taxqueña): Buses from this station head to places south of Mexico City, including Puebla, Taxco, and Cuernavaca.
  • Terminal de Autobuses del Poniente: Buses from Poniente head west of Mexico City to destinations like Manzanillo and Guadalajara.

You can use Busbud or BookAway to plan and reserve intercity buses from the Mexico City airport.

mexico city traffic jam

Average cost: $1000 MXN/day (including insurance & fees)

I’m basically just including this option to tell you why I don’t recommend it.

If you’re thinking about renting a car for Mexico City, don’t bother. The traffic is horrible, and parking is tough to come by and expensive. It’s very affordable to get around via Uber, Taxi, and metro, so there’s no reason to subject yourself to the hassle of renting a car here.

Rental cars can be awesome in other parts of the country, but you simply don’t need one here.

If you’re transiting through Mexico City to visit another area, I still don’t recommend a rental car. In most cases, taking a bus to the next city will be easier, safer, and more efficient than renting a car.

You can always rent a car when you reach that destination if you still feel you need one (which you might, depending on your plans).

When it comes to renting cars, I recommend using Discover Cars to find the best rates on rental cars anywhere in Mexico.

How do I get from the airport to the city of Mexico City?

The Mexico City airport is located just outside of the city center. Airport taxis are a safe and efficient way to research your destination within Mexico City. They are available all the time, and you don’t need to book ahead.

Is Uber available at the Mexico City airport?

Uber isn’t technically allowed to pick up at the Mexico City airport, but you can request pickup, and the app will direct you to a pickup location. I’ve done this in the past and was able to meet my driver in the departures area of the airport, but this may change. I usually opt for a taxi from the airport and then use Uber to get back to it at the end of my trip.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Mexico City?

Uber generally costs around the same amount as a Mexico City taxi. However, many travelers prefer Uber because it’s easier to use (especially for those who don’t speak Spanish) since the destination is input into the GPS, and all payment is handled through the app.

Does Mexico City Airport have a subway?

Yes! The Terminal Aérea metro station is located just outside Terminal 1 at the Mexico City airport. Tickets cost 5 pesos.

How much is a taxi from Mexico City airport to downtown?

A taxi from the MEX airport to Mexico City’s historic center will cost about $250 pesos. Fares are fixed depending on your destination. You pay in advance at the taxi stand inside the airport, so there’s no need to haggle with the taxi driver.

What’s the safest way to get from the Mexico City Airport to my hotel?

Each of the methods I mentioned above is generally safe. But, a private airport transfer is likely the safest way to get to your hotel from the airport. Because they’re a private service, these companies typically act with the utmost professionalism, ensuring you are treated respectfully, and the driver is mindful of traffic laws. I’ve always found private drivers to be more safety conscious on the road than taxi or bus drivers.

How do I get from the Mexico City Airport to Condesa?

The distance from the airport to Condesa is about 9 miles, and it takes around 30 minutes to drive. A taxi is the most convenient option to get there, as they are readily available at the airport. Travelers can also consider using public transportation such as the metro or bus, which will cost a fraction of the price but take longer.

Mexico Travel Planning Resources

🌡️ Do I need travel insurance?

Yes! Healthcare in Mexico is affordable for minor ailments, but travel insurance will give you peace of mind if an emergency arises. Plus, you can add coverage for trip interruption, theft, etc. Get a quote from SafetyWing .

🏨 What’s the best way to find accommodation in Mexico?

I use a mix of Booking, Airbnb, and Hostelworld.

Booking.com  is awesome for booking hotels and resorts,  Hostelworld  is great for hostels, and  Airbnb  specializes in apartment rentals, making it a great place to find long-term stays.

💸 How should I exchange money in Mexico?

Use local ATMS to withdraw cash. US travelers should open a Charles Schwab bank account because they’ll refund ATM fees at the end of the month.

Travelers from outside the US should open a Wise account to secure the best currency exchange rates.

📱 Where can I buy a local SIM card in Mexico?

Pick up a Telcel SIM card at any convenience store. Or, buy an Airalo eSIM online so you’re connected as soon as you land.

🗣️ Do I need to speak Spanish in Mexico?

No, but it definitely helps you feel more confident and connected.

RocketSpanish is my favorite program for learning the foundations of the language. If you’re more focused on improving your conversation skills, hire a tutor through iTalki to prep for your trip.

✈️ What’s the best way to find affordable flights?

I use Skyscanner because it makes it easy to compare rates across different travel days.

🚖 How do I find a safe airport transfer?

I recommend GetTransfer for airport transfers anywhere in Mexico.

🚗 What’s the best way to find rental cars in Mexico?

I recommend Discover Cars because they aggregate prices across rental car companies, making it easy to find competitive rates.

🚐 How do I book bus tickets online in Mexico?

Plan your routes with Rome2Rio , and book your tickets with Busbud — the site is in English and takes foreign credit cards. (Read more here)

🤿 How do I find cool activities and tours in Mexico?

I recommend Viator and Get Your Guide . Viator usually has more options, but it’s worth comparing offerings across both platforms.

🇲🇽 How can I experience Mexico like a local?

Solo female travelers can hire a local female guide through Greether . Greeters will tailor tours based on your interests— it’s basically like experiencing a destination with a local bestie!

🧳 What’s the best luggage for Mexico?

Unless you’re staying at a resort, a travel pack is recommended. I’ve used this one from Osprey for the last 8+ years.

Mexico City

Getting To and From Mexico City Airport

There are many ways to get from Mexico City Airport into the city’s historic center, and all of them are very reasonably priced. You can opt to travel via bus, metro, taxi, Uber, or even drive yourself with a rental vehicle. Here are a few ideas, along with prices showing the easiest ways to get to and from Mexico City Airport.

Traveling by Bus

Taking the bus service from Mexico City Airport to the city center is easy. Simply jump onto the Line 4 Metrobus outside the Terminal 1 and 2 buildings. These buses operate from around 04:30 am, every 15 minutes, until midnight with a journey time of approximately 30 minutes into Mexico City. You can purchase Metrobus smartcards at the sales/filling machines for around $1.50 USD per person one-way. If you’re traveling further afield say to Cordoba, Puebla, Toluca, and Tlaxcala, there are long-distance buses available too.

Metro/Subway

mexico city subway

Metro Line 5 transports you into Mexico City from the airport’s Terminal Aérea Station, located a short walk from Terminal 1. This is a cost-effective way to travel with tickets costing less than 0.50 cents per single 50-minute journey. If you’re a woman traveling solo, there’s also good news. In addition to female-only taxis in Mexico City, there are also dedicated Metro carriages too. It’s worth remembering, as with all public transportation methods in a foreign land, to keep your belongings with you at all times to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Driving From the Airport Into the City

If you’re thinking of hiring a car and driving from the airport into Mexico City’s historical center, you’ll be happy to hear it’s a relatively easy drive. As you exit the airport look for signs to join Route 1. Continue on this road until you reach Parque Aguascalientes where you join Route 3 turning left, then take the first right onto Héroe de Nacozari. Follow this road to República de Venezuela, then you’re almost at the historic center of Mexico City. Many popular tourist hotels are located near here including Barcelo Mexico Reforma, Hotel Sevilla Palace, and Le Meridien Mexico City. If you wish to rent a car in advance and collect it at the airport, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Hertz, and Alamo all operate out of here. Car hire is reasonably priced costing approximately $200 USD for a medium sized vehicle that accommodates 5 passengers for one weeks hire. Once you get to Mexico City, check out these top-rated hotels to stay in.

Taxi into Mexico City from the Airport

Airport taxis are available 24 hours a day outside Terminals 1 and 2. They are a convenient (and reasonably priced) way to reach Mexico City, costing around $13-15 USD each way. The official airport taxis are easily recognizable, featuring red and gold or pink and white markings. It’s best to avoid unlicensed taxis. The journey time is around 20 minutes into the city center, and you can purchase your taxi ticket at the “Transporte Terrestre” kiosk. You then present the ticket to the driver when you enter the taxi. Your driver will know where to take you!

Uber into Mexico City Center

driving mexico city from airport

Another safe way to travel throughout Mexico is via Uber. Simply install the Uber app onto your smartphone, choose your pickup and drop off destinations and prepay for the service using your credit or debit card. As soon as a driver is near your location, the app will send you the name of the Uber driver, as well as the car’s make, model, color, and license plate number. As you’ve already paid for the journey online, there are no surprises when you reach your destination. These Uber drivers know all the short cuts so you’ll reach your destination quickly and effortlessly. If it’s your first-time using Uber, browse online for new-user discount vouchers and you will find your journey becomes even more reasonable! Also, in some cities, you can add a tip for Uber drivers. However, in Mexico City this is not allowed. You will find most drivers won’t accept any money you offer them. It rarely costs above $10-12 USD to travel from Mexico City Airport into the city center via Uber and you will often find the drivers offer a little local knowledge along the way.

Once you get to Mexico City

Learn how to navigate Mexico's busiest airport

travel from mexico city airport to hotel

Mexico City International Airport

As the gateway to Mexico's capital city and many other destinations in Mexico, the Benito Juarez International Airport is one of the busiest in the world. Many travelers will land here before taking connecting flights to their final destination in Mexico, so this huge airport receives more than 40 million passengers each year. Although it's notorious for being extremely busy and confusing to navigate, the Benito Juarez International Airport is home to many shops that are open 24 hours per day, has a range of overnight accommodations located inside the airport, and is easy to get to and from by car or public transportation.

Airport Code, Location, and Contact Information

The Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) is officially known as Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de Mexico Benito Juarez, or AICM.

  • Phone number: (+52 55) 2482-2424
  • Website: https://www.aicm.com.mx/

Know Before You Go

For many, the terminals are the most confusing part of this airport, since they are not separated by domestic and international flights. Here, which terminal you'll leave from or arrive in is decided by the airline you are flying with. For example, AeroMexico operates out of Terminal 2 (T2) while most other airlines will arrive and depart from Terminal 1 (T1). The terminals are not very close together, but you can take the Aerotren , a free monorail, to travel more easily between terminals. It's also possible to take a shuttle bus between terminals, but this would require paying a small fee.

If you are arriving on an international flight you will have to clear customs and fill out the immigration form, which should be handed out by flight attendants before you land. You'll need to keep the bottom part of the form for the day that you depart Mexico. If you lose it, you will have to pay a fine. When you get off the plane follow the signs for immigration. You may find long lines, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get through the system and find the gate for your next flight.

Once you pass through immigration, you can move on to the baggage claim area to pick up any checked luggage before passing through customs. Luggage carts will be available, but you will not be able to take them out to the curb with you. If you have more luggage than you can handle on your own, luggage carriers will make themselves available to help in exchange for a small tip .

Airport Parking

The airport offers three parking lots, each equipped with handicap-accessible spaces, bathrooms, and elevators. Rates can be found on the airport website , but remember to hold on to your ticket. If you lose it, you may have to pay a large fee.

Driving Directions

The airport is just 8 miles (13 km) away from central Mexico city and accessible from the north and south by the Circuito Interior Highway. From downtown, take Paseo de la Reforma east, turn right on Avenue Rio Consolado, then turn right on the Circuito Interior Highway, and follow the signs for the airport.

Public Transportation and Taxis

Travel time between downtown Mexico City and the airport will depend greatly on traffic, so on departure be sure to leave plenty of time to get there before your flight.

  • There are authorized taxi stands inside the airport where you can buy a ticket to your destination. With an authorized taxi, you will pay for your fare in advance by purchasing a ticket. Look for the stands that say "Transporte Terrestre" and then proceed outside to the taxi line to catch the taxi.
  • If you're not carrying too much luggage, the metro is a good option to get to and from the Mexico City Airport. The metro station is Terminal Aerea on the yellow line and will take you directly to the airport.
  • There are direct long-distance buses to and from Cordoba, Cuernavaca, Pachuca, Puebla, Querétaro, Toluca, and Tlaxcala. Look for signs that say Transporte Foréano/Terrestre at either T1 or T2.
  • Uber is available from the Mexico City airport.

Where to Eat and Drink

At an airport as big as this, you can find a wide variety of food options , from small cafes to bars to full-service restaurants. You'll see familiar brands like Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, Subway, and other fast-food chains located throughout the airport. These are good for grabbing a quick bite to eat, but you can also find many places where you can purchase something to take with you on the plane. If you have a late flight, you'll have plenty of options that are open around the clock.

If you have more time, consider sitting down at one of the finer restaurants like La Mansion in Terminal 1, where you can fill up on Mexican breakfast or order a juicy steak. In Terminal 2, Casa Avila is a Spanish restaurant that offers a slightly more intimate dining experience—so much so that you might even forget that you're eating at the airport!

Where to Shop

Shops stay open late and some even stay open throughout the night. You'll find plenty of last-minute Mexican souvenirs like tequila, Mexican chocolate, and silver jewelry, plus plenty of perfumes, cosmetics, and other goodies at the Duty Free stores located in the Arrivals and Departures sections of Terminal 1 and the Departures section of Terminal 2.

How to Spend Your Layover

Traveling to the city by metro takes just about an hour each way, so if you have a long layover of seven hours or more, you may want to consider killing some time by visiting some of the top sights in Mexico City . If you'd rather relax, enjoy a long lunch at one of Mexico City's top restaurants . You can also take a taxi to save yourself some time, but avoid doing so during rush hour (6:30 am to 9:30am; 3pm to 9pm).

If you have an overnight layover, consider booking a room at one of the three hotels located inside the airport: The Hilton Mexico City, Hotel NH Collection, or the izZzleep Hotel.

Airport Lounges

The airport has 13 different lounges , some of which are only accessible through loyalty membership or by having a business or first-class ticket. However, it's possible to buy a day pass at select lounges.

Wi-Fi and Charging Stations

The airport itself offers free Wi-Fi , but if you're looking for a faster option you can also connect to one of the complimentary Wi-Fi signals from establishments like Starbucks or obtain a password from one of the VIP lounges. If you need to charge your phone, you'll find many charging stations throughout both terminals.

Airport Tips and Tidbits

There are a few tricks to ensuring a smooth experience at Mexico City's Airport.

  • Departure gate numbers are usually announced only 30 minutes prior to boarding, so check the departures screens for your gate number and get to your gate on time.
  • There are luggage storage facilities on the ground floor of Terminal 1 and on the lower level of Terminal 2.
  • You will also find banks, ATMs, and currency exchange booths as well as options for car rentals, and tourist information desks.
  • The rule against drinking tap water in Mexico still applies even when you're at the airport, so make sure you purchase bottled water once you are past security.
  • Currency exchange kiosks in Mexico will give you a favorable fee in exchange for trading in your pesos for American dollars. You can even turn a small profit, so make sure to trade in all your pesos for dollars before you go.

How to Get From --> Mexico City Airport to Mexico City Centre

Leaving from...

Going to...

What to expect when visiting Mexico City

Mexico City is a destination that will keep any type of traveller entertained for days on end. Interesting history, rich culture, endless shopping and vibrant nightlife are just a few of the many things Mexico City has to offer.

A fun fact, with over 150 museums, Mexico City has the highest number of museums in the world. When you’re museumed-out, there are plenty of other things to do in Mexico City . Visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, explore Frida Kahlo’s house, or take a boat trip along the canals of Xochimilco.

3 ways to get from Mexico City Airport to Mexico City Centre

Where to stay in mexico city.

Still looking for accommodation? Don't forget to check out our favourite places to stay in Mexico City at the bottom of this page.

Mexico City Airport to Mexico City Centre by Metro

Travelling light? The Metro is the cheapest way to get from Mexico City International Airport to the city centre. But there are two things to note to know whether taking the Metro is for you:

  • Bulky luggage is not allowed in the Metro.
  • There is no direct Metro line going to the city centre. Depending on where you’re heading, you may have to make a few transfers.

If you don’t mind any of these restrictions, let’s get to the more detailed guide!

The nearest Metro station to Mexico City Airport is Terminal Area Station (Line 5). This train station is just a 7-minute walk from Terminal 1. Head to the exit gates. Once you’re outside of Terminal 1, turn left and follow the signs to the Metro.

If you’re coming from Terminal 2, you’ll first have to take the Aerotren to get to Terminal 1.

Now on to the train transfers. Metro Line 5 (yellow lane) can only take you up to Pantitlan. From here, the most common route for tourists is to transfer to Line 1 (pink lane). If you’re heading to the main square, get off at Pino Suarez Station and then transfer to Line 2 (blue lane). The next stop is already Zocalo . It’s best to know the train station nearest to your hotel before setting off!

The Metro operates from 05:00 to midnight on weekdays. On weekends, it opens a bit later — 06:00 on Saturdays and 07:00 on Sundays and holidays. You can buy your tickets at the vending machines in the Metro station. A ticket costs 5 MXN ($0.30). Travel time with the Metro from Mexico City Airport to the centre is around 50 minutes.

Use the Metro if your hotel is outside the city centre

While the Metrobus uses its own lane on the road, the Metro is an underground rail, which is faster to cover long distances.

Both the Metro and the Metrobus have maps to check your location, but we recommend using apps like Moovit or Google Maps. These apps can be very helpful when planning your route and switching metro lines or finding the nearest stop to your accommodation.

Alongside showing you suggested routes, Moovit is a dedicated transport app that also allows you to explore bus lines and stations, allowing you to look for alternative routes on your own.

Moovit also notifies when bus lines are not operating or when schedules change, so this can be a better tool than Google Maps as long as you have a local data plan on your phone.

Mexico City Airport to Mexico City Centre by Metrobus

If you’re heading to the city centre, the easiest and most direct option is to take Line #4 of the Metrobus. You’ll find the Metrobus stops right outside of both airport passenger terminals:

  • Gate 7 on Terminal 1
  • Gate 2 on Terminal 2

The Metrobus runs every day from 05:00 to 00:00 and the rate is just 30 MXN ($1.80) for a single ticket from Mexico City Airport to the centre. You can buy your tickets at the ticket machine at the bus stop.

After around 45 minutes on the Metrobus, you’ll reach Republica de Argentina , the closest stop to the main square called Zocalo. It’s best to research beforehand which bus stop is the nearest to your hotel to avoid any inconvenience.

Other stops within the city centre are Republica de Chile , Teatro Blanquita , and Bellas Artes .

Mexico City Airport to Mexico City Centre by Taxi

The most convenient way to get from Benito Juárez International Airport to the city centre is to take a taxi, but it’s also the most expensive.

You’ll need to prepay for your taxi at one of the counters inside the airport. The rate will depend on the distance to your destination, but it usually starts from 300 MXN ($18.10).

If you have internet access, a more affordable option is to use Uber. A ride to the city centre costs around 200 MXN ($12.10).

For both the taxi and Uber, the time to reach the city centre is around 25 minutes.

Shared Minivan for solo travellers heading outside the city centre

We don’t really recommend using the shared minivan to get from Mexico City International Airport to the centre because the rate is about the same as a taxi or Uber. You won’t be saving much money and will likely spend more time if they drop off other passengers before you.

However, shared minivans can be a good option if you are travelling alone and staying in other areas located further away from the airport like Condesa, Polanco or Coyoacan. You will avoid the hassle of switching lines on the Metro or Metrobus and will be dropped off directly at your accommodation at a lower rate than a taxi.

Also, if you are arriving late in the evening, shared minivans are a safer option than public transport.

Shared minivans are available 24/7 and depart every hour. You can book this service on BookAway with rates starting from 180 MXN ($10.90) to the city centre and from 315 MXN ($19) to other areas. Travel time is 30 to 50 minutes depending on where your hotel is located.

Convenient and cheap. We needed somewhere close to the airport that was cheap as our flight arrived at 4.30am. The owner who's really lovely and helpful organised collection from airport from me prior to arriving. The place was stacked up with drinks and snacks (for a fee but super reasonable). We only used the main room. The bed was huge and really comfortable. The shower was okay. Nothing fancy but we didn't expect that anyway. It was fine. We had a really good rest. Before we left we went for a walk around the area. Lots of shops, street vendors around. Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

Airport - Hotel

Hotel - airport.

P - How far ahead of time should I book my transfer?

P - How long does the journey from the hotel to the airport take?

It takes approximately 30 minutes to get from Mexico City International Airport to the various districts of Mexico City. We recommend booking the transfer service 3 hours before your flight departure time .

P - What pick up time should I choose?

For transfers beginning at the airport, you should indicate the time at which your flight is due to arrive. The same goes for cruise ports and train stations: you should indicate the planned arrival time. For transfers from your hotel, you should indicate when you would like to be picked up. That doesn't mean the flight time, rather the time you would like to be collected.  For shared transfers, orders may be modified by the provider. Should this be the case, we will contact you to confirm the rearranged time.

P - How long will the driver wait for me?

  • Airports: 1 hour from the plane's arrival time.
  • Cruise ports: 1 hour from the boat's docking time.
  • Tran stations: 15 minutes from the train's arrival time.
  • Hotels and apartments: 15 minutes from the time indicated when making your reservation.

If for any reason you need more time, please ring the telephone number on your reservation. Should this be the case, supplements may apply

P - Where will the driver be waiting for me?

  • Airports: the driver will wait in the arrivals hall, just after luggage pick up.
  • Ports: the driver will wait in the arrivals terminal.
  • Train stations: the driver will wait at the exit of the train's arrival platform.
  • Hotels and apartments: the driver will wait outside the building. If it's possible to park, the driver may wait at reception.

The driver will always wait with a sign bearing your name.

P - Are the prices final? Are there any extra charges?

Unlike our competitors, our prices are final, and include all fees, including tolls and tips. Some extra charges may apply if the destination is not as arranged, or if an extra stop must be taken on the way.

P - How many people can travel in the vehicle?

The number of seats indicated for each vehicle is the maximum number of people who can travel, excluding the driver. All passengers, including small children no matter the age, count. If your group is large, you should reserve more than one vehicle.

P - How many suitcases can I take?

During the reservations process you can see the amount of luggage that each vehicle allows. Each vehicle comes with indications as to its maximum capacity for large suitcases and hand luggage. The maximum dimensions per type of suitcase are:

  • Hand luggage: total length, height and width adding up to no more than 115 cm.
  • Large suitcase: total length, height and width adding up to no more than 155 cm.

P - Are child seats available?

During the reservation process you'll see information regarding child seats. Depending on the regulations in each destination, these may be obligatory or optional, and they may be free or imply an additional cost. You will see this cost added before booking.

P - How can I find out my flight number?

The flight number is comprised of 2 characters that represent the airline, and 4 numbers for the flight number. Some examples are IB3506, UX1254, or 5Z1826. You can find your flight number on the airline's confirmation email.

P - Do I have to let someone know if my flight, boat, or train is delayed?

Flights, trains and boats are constantly monitored, so you don't have to worry about getting in touch with us. Should the delay be large, if it's impossible to reprogram the transfer as there are no vehicles available, we'll refund the full amount paid.

P - Why do I need a working mobile phone?

A working mobile phone is needed so we can call you should there be any emergency, such as a breakdown, or simply if the driver can't find you.

P - Who is responsible for a missed flight?

The transfer company is never responsible for a missed flight. The clients are those who must know what time the flight leaves, and book pick up far enough ahead of time.

P - Is it possible to make various stops?

If you're staying in different hotels, or you need to make a stop to pick up keys, this service comes with supplemental charges. Once you have made your reservation, we'll send you an email with the amount. You can accept or cancel the service at no cost. You can pay online or in-destination.

P - Can I share the vehicle with other people?

We offer both private and shared transfers. In the case of private services, the vehicle will be for you alone. For shared transfers, you will share the vehicle with other passengers.

P - Will the driver speak English?

Although in the majority of countries, the drivers will speak several languages, we can't guarantee that the driver assigned to you will speak English. Nonetheless, it shouldn't be necessary to complete the transfer, as the driver will have all the necessary details.

P - Do you have transfers in other destinations?

Yes, here you can see all the destinations where we offer airport transfers .

Servicio correcto.

7 Tips for Finding Budget-Friendly Mexico City Airport Transportation

L anded at the sprawling metropolis and feeling the pinch of pricey cabs? Let’s cut straight to the chase: snagging budget-friendly Mexico City airport transportation is your first step towards a savvy travel experience.

Forget the stress of haggling with taxi drivers or navigating a complex public transport system right off the bat. Whether you’re here to explore the vibrant streets, dive into the rich history, or indulge in the culinary delights, how you get from the airport sets the tone for your entire trip.

This article is your golden ticket to avoiding those wallet-thinning rides. Here, we’re laying out seven unbeatable tips that promise not just savings but a smooth start to your adventure in Mexico City. Ready to make your travel budget work harder for you? Stick with us to uncover the secrets to cost-effective commuting right from your touchdown.

1. Use the Metro System

When you land in Mexico City, one of the most budget-friendly ways to start your adventure is by hopping on the Metro. It’s not just cheap. It’s a direct line into the city’s heart.

The Metro offers a straightforward route for getting to your hotel without the high costs of other transportation options. Look for the Line 5, which is a short walk from Terminal 1.

This is the cheapest way to travel from the airport with tickets costing around 5 MXN ($0.20). It takes around 50 minutes to reach most locations in central Mexico City.

Traveling with lots of luggage? Keep in mind that large luggage is technically not allowed but this is rarely enforced. You might struggle during busy periods, however, as the Metro can get very crowded during rush hours in the morning and evening .

2. Consider Ride-Sharing Apps

Ride-sharing apps have changed the game when it comes to vacation transportation. In Mexico City, these apps provide a viable alternative to traditional taxis, often at a lower cost.

Apps like Uber and Didi are popular and offer transparent pricing and the convenience of booking a ride right from your phone. This makes managing your travel plans a breeze. Plus, you can see the cost upfront, so there are no surprises.

When using these apps, double-check the vehicle and driver details before you get in for a secure journey to your destination.

3. Look into Authorized Taxis

Authorized taxis at Mexico City’s airport offer a stress-free option for getting where you need to go. These taxis are regulated which ensures fair, fixed rates and a safe ride.

To use this service, look for the authorized taxi stands inside the airport with the sign “Transporte Terrestre”. Here, you’ll purchase a prepaid ticket for your destination. This system prevents any unexpected costs which makes it a reliable part of your vacation transportation.

Remember, picking a taxi outside the airport might not guarantee the same security and fixed pricing as the authorized services do.

4. Explore Bus Services

Bus services from Mexico City’s airport are another economical choice for travelers. These buses are not only affordable but also connect you directly to key points across the city.

They’re an integral part of the types of transportation available for newcomers and locals alike. For instance, the Metrobus Line 4 extends from the airport to the historic city center and offers a convenient route for tourists.

Buses run frequently, so waiting times are minimal. Plus, traveling by bus gives you a unique view of the city’s landscape as you head to your hotel or next destination.

5. Research Shuttle Services

Finding a ride from the airport that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg can be a real headache. Shuttle services are a lifesaver for the solo traveler with a tight budget, especially if you’re lugging around a suitcase or two.

You can book a spot on a shuttle, which is usually a minibus or large car, right at the airport. Head over to the kiosks in the arrivals hall to secure your seat.

It’s a bit cheaper than a cab, costing around $9 per person to the city center. Sure, it might take a tad longer since you’ll be dropping off other folks along the way, but if you’re not in a rush, it’s worth the savings.

However, weigh your options because sometimes, the difference in price and time might not be as significant as you’d think.

6. Rent a Car

If you’re feeling bold and want total freedom to explore, renting a car might be up your alley. It’s the priciest option for getting out of Mexico City’s airport but could be a good investment for those planning to venture beyond the city.

Driving here is no joke, though. With the bustling traffic and the challenge of finding parking, it’s not for everyone. If you do decide to rent, try to avoid peak traffic hours to make your escape from the airport a little smoother.

You’ll find all the major rental companies at the airport, but booking online in advance is a smart move to snag the best deal. Just remember, navigating the city’s busy streets requires confidence and a bit of courage.

7. Book Transportation in Advance

To dodge the stress of last-minute decisions, consider booking your airport transfers before you even pack your bags. Doing this can lock in some pretty decent rates and save you money and time. Whether it’s a shuttle, a taxi, or a private car, early bookings mean you won’t be left stranded or paying through the nose.

For those staying at hotels, check if they offer shuttle services. Sometimes they’re free or at a discounted rate.

Planning ahead not only makes your travel smoother but also gives you peace of mind. After all, who wants to haggle with taxi drivers or navigate public transport systems after a long flight?

7 Tips for Finding Budget-Friendly Mexico City Airport Transportation

  Featured Destination: New Mexico

Be amazed by the enchanting southwest.

If you’re planning a visit to New Mexico, you’ll soon find yourself enchanted by all that this state has to offer. A rich history, flavorful cuisine and unspoiled natural beauty await. Put on some comfortable shoes, grab a camera and set off on an adventure in New Mexico. Hotels are near popular sites, so it’s easy to explore the “Land of Enchantment.”

With approximately 310 days of sunshine all year, your family will always find a way to enjoy the city sights.

Surrounded by red rock cliffs and adorned with murals, this city along Route 66 has a native flair all its own.

Gypsum dunes, dinosaur tracks, towering mountains and hot springs—what more could you want from a destination?

It’s like this stopover on Route 66 didn’t move past the 1950s with its old school vibe and vintage architecture.

Undiscovered country awaits you in this little-known town that’s warm, welcoming and friendly on the budget.

  Featured Articles

Drive along the famous Route 66 to find old-timey buildings, Southwestern art and dinosaur history.

Go behind the scenes of the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival with the volunteers who help make the event happen.

Tinted by iron and topped by mesas, these colorful cliffs are just a prelude to all of the beauty, color and art that you will see in town.

The State Charm

For the quintessential New Mexico experience, visit Santa Fe, the oldest state capital city in the U.S. With its signature adobe buildings, large artists’ and writers’ community and obvious Native American and Spanish influences, Santa Fe has managed to retain more than 400 years of charm. The Plaza, on the Santa Fe Trail, is the town’s cultural heart. This popular New Mexico attraction features markets, festivals and other cultural events.

Genuinely Native

Look even closer and you’ll find antiquity coexisting with the 21st century. Throughout this region, and down to Albuquerque, you’ll find ancient pueblos—villages of adobe homes often built into the hillside. Acoma Pueblo, just an hour west of many Albuquerque hotels , has been inhabited since the 11th century. Only about 50 of the tribe’s 2,800 members live here year-round, but many return for holidays and festivals—which is the best time to visit.

If you prefer to SCUBA dive on vacation, book your New Mexico hotel near Santa Rosa’s Blue Hole . You might be surprised to learn that this 80-foot-deep artesian spring is one of the most popular diving destinations in the U.S. Thanks to the ingenuity of thousands of divers from around the world, it now features almost as many kitschy attractions underwater as the iconic Route 66 does on dry land. The “Mother Road” zigzags through Santa Rosa, leaving hints of yesteryear’s favorite road trip.

New Mexico Hotels

With so many distinctly different things to experience in New Mexico, you’ll want to take in the whole, unique state if you can. Start planning your trip by checking out Choice Hotels in New Mexico for great rates, rewards and travel-essential amenities.
