Packing up the car and taking a road trip with your best (dog) friend can seem like a great idea. But there are a lot of places dogs aren’t allowed, and that’s where a travel crate can come into play, especially if you’re staying in hotels.

I personally have taken 5-6 trips across the United States with two dogs. We’ve used multiple types of crates, starting with the traditional house crate (hard wired metal) and finally settling on a foldable soft crate.

Soft Crate vs. Hard Crate

You could not pay me to take a road trip with a metal crate, with one exception: I was driving a truck and the dog was comfortable or preferred the bed of the truck as opposed to the inside floor. Other than that I’m taking a soft crate every single time.

The primary reason is weight. Lugging in 1, 2, 3 or more hard crates into a hotel room is pure torture, especially if you have large dogs, which means large crates.

It’s true that hard crates are easier to clean up, so if you have an older dog or a younger dog prone to accidents then a hard crate may be worth it, but even then it’s a close call.

Travel Crate

While cars are made for human safety, they are not always the safest for pups, especially because they cannot wear a traditional seat-belt ( although there are dog specific seat-belts and harnesses ) as we can. Some (not all) travel crates make sure that your dog is secure and in the event of a crash, they stay inside the vehicle instead of being ejected.

However, most travel crates are simply meant for hotels or overnight stays where you can’t leave the dog in the room to roam about. We almost never use crates inside cars (occasionally in a truck bed). Instead we’ll set up our soft crates in the hotel room so we can visit a local museum, restaurant, or another attraction where dogs aren’t allowed.

My detailed travel crate setup

For the past several years we’ve used the same two Noz2Noz Soft-Krater without a single issue.

Unfortunately we didn’t start out using soft crates. We started with the traditional metal crates (that way a ton!).

Our first road trip was about 3 weeks across the U.S. and I will never, ever, ever again use metal crates. Holy cow was that a pain.

Our car is packed exactly the same, except we now use soft crates, which pack down even smaller than the picture below. Once we reach the hotel, if we need to leave the dogs for an excursion or something, we’ll unpack the crates and set them up like below.

You can see the 2 soft crates setup in the hotel room, and I also left the laptop in the picture because we use a program called iCam that streams the laptop camera to our phone. That way we can check on the dogs while we’re out.

The crates break down super quick, and we pack up the following day (or whenever we’re done at that hotel).

We don’t even own the metal crates anymore. We used to keep them around in case we needed to crate them in the house, but now we just use the soft crates for that as well.

Nice info … however, never leave your dog unattended in a hotel room. In fact, in most places it’s a policy and in some municipalities, it’s against the law.

Dog Travel Crate Requirements: Things You Need & Things to Avoid

We’ll get started by explaining the features dog crates must possess to be suitable for flying in the cargo section of the airplane.

Just note that these rules apply for international flights as dictated by the International Air Travel Association (IATA). The requirements for domestic travel are typically slightly more relaxed, but to be safe, it’s best to follow the official international guidelines.

Features to Look for in an Airline-Approved Dog Crate

Here are some of the key elements to look for when picking your dog’s travel crate:

Sizing. Ample space is required for all air-travel crates, but the specifics vary based on your destination. For international travel (and most domestic flights), pet travel crates are required to be equal to your pet’s length, plus half of his leg, to provide plenty of room in front and back of your pet. An IATA-compliant dog crate must be tall enough so that the dog’s ears cannot touch the top of the kennel while they are standing. Pets must also be able to turn around and lie down comfortably while inside the crate.

Metal Nuts and Bolts. Some dog travel carriers will include plastic nuts and bolts for assembly, but metal nuts and bolts are required for all air travel. (Note: some pet crates come with metal bolts that have plastic caps – these are allowed).

Single Metal Door. Many airlines (although not all) require that your pet crate features a travel kennel door designed as a single metal piece (rather than some models that have a plastic door that folds in the middle. Dogs can potentially pull these types of doors in, which can cause them to collapse, which illustrates the reason many flights require one whole metal door.

Additionally, while top-loading doors are often very convenient, most airlines prohibit crates with these kinds of entrances.

Food and Water Dishes. Airplane crates are required to have two separate food and water dishes attached to the crate door, rather than the sides . This is because the airlines must be able to have access to the dishes without opening the kennel door. This allows them to feed and water pets during the flight without opening the kennel door.

Document Info and Feeding Instructions. On your dog’s travel crate, include your pet’s important information – his name, any medications he takes, your phone number and address, plus your final destination, flight number, and the contact info of someone at your destination. Also attach your dog’s feeding and care instructions, plus a bag of food, to the top of the crate.

Kennel Doors Must Be Zip Tied Shut.   Travel crate doors must be zip-tied shut to prevent doors from accidentally coming loose and opening during the flight.

Safety and Carrying Side Rim. Airlines require a spacing rim of at least 3/4-inches on all sides with ventilation openings. This is to prevent dogs from biting cargo handlers and allowing two cargo handlers to carry the kennel on each side.

Crate Lining. Dog travel crates must be lined with cushioning and an absorbent material for potential accidents during travel.

Live Animal Stickers.   Airline kennels are required to have “live animal” stickers and “this way up” stickers on all sides. Many airlines will provide you with stickers – call ahead of time and make sure or bring your own.

Sufficient Ventilation. For international travel, air holes are required on all four sides, totaling at least half of each side wall of the dog travel crate. Domestic flights only require two ventilated sides or metal mesh panels (in addition to the door), but for optimal airflow and pet safety, we recommend kennels with air holes on all four sides.

Features to Avoid in an Airline-Approved Dog Crate

Crates designed for car travel or household use may have bonus features that, while helpful for most owners, will not be allowed for air travel. Make sure to avoid features listed below:

No Top Opening Doors. Kennels with top opening doors are not permitted.

No Plastic Front Doors or Latches.  Travel dog crates cannot have plastic doors or plastic side latches securing the top and bottom of the kennel together without additional hardware (such as metal nuts and bolts).

Any Wheels Must Be Detachable. The crate must have wheels that are detachable or simply be made without wheels at all.

Cannot Be Made Of Unstable Materials. Your dog’s travel crate can not be made entirely of things like wicker or wire mesh, and it cannot be a soft-sided dog crate . Hard-sided crates are required, as soft-sided crates simply won’t provide adequate protection for riding in the cargo hold. So, look for crates made from metal or rigid plastic.

Travel Dog Crate Requirements for Specific Airlines: Airline Regulations for Flying Four-Footers

As mentioned, the specific travel dog crate requirements airlines impose often vary from one carrier to the next. To help you get ready for Fido’s flight, we’ve linked directly to the requirements of a few of the largest carriers below.

More Pet Airline Travel Tips

Picking an airline-approved carrier for your pet is obviously important, but it isn’t the only thing to think about when preparing to fly with your floof. Try to keep the following tips and tricks in mind to enjoy a smooth flight with Fido!

Fly Direct. If at all possible book direct flights and avoid stopovers when traveling with your pooch. You don’t want to be keeping your dog in the cargo hold any longer than absolutely necessary.

Consider the Season and Time Of Day You’ll Be Flying. Keep the seasons in mind when traveling with your pet. In the summer months, fly in the early morning or evening, when temperatures will be more comfortable than mid-day. Conversely, in the winter, you want to try to fly mid-day to take advantage of the slightly warmer weather.

Research Your Airline. Be sure to call and talk with airline representatives to ensure you’re meeting the individual airline’s rules. Different airlines have different policies when it comes to traveling with your dog, and you don’t want to arrive at the airport, only to find that your crate doesn’t check out. Also call again 24 to 48 hours before your flight to reconfirm that you’ll be traveling with your pet.

If you can, we’d also recommend flying with one of the most pet-friendly airlines for flying with dogs , just to make sure you and your pooch are in the very best hands!

Be Extra Cautious When Flying With Short-Faced Dogs. Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) dogs have many respiratory issues, making air travel extremely dangerous for them (especially during lengthy trips). Most airlines won’t even allow snub-nosed dogs to fly at all, so you may need to consider getting your dog relocated with a private pet transport service .

Do Not Give Your Dog Drugs. Do not give your dog medications before the flight, if at all possible. Drugs can interfere with your pet’s cardiovascular system, altering how your pet’s body adjusts to high altitudes. They can also make your dog lose his balance and cause injury. Only administer medications to your pet if your vet recommends doing so before the flight.

Do Not Leash or Muzzle Your Dog. You don’t want to muzzle your dog for the flight, as it creates unnecessary stress and may even prevent him from breathing and regulating his body temperature correctly. Also don’t pack a leash inside the crate — it may entangle your pupper and cause an injury.

Do Some Pre-Flight Preparation.  To ensure your dog has a good travel experience, you’ll want to help him get used to the travel crate prior to takeoff. Use the crate several times before the big day and make it a fun, positive experience. To simulate the airplane experience, have your dog get into the crate and then put him in a car and drive around. This will help your pet adapt to the sensations and movement he will experience during flight.

Watch Flight Attendants Zip Tie the Crate Shut. Some pet travelers like to watch the flight attendants as they zip tie the kennel door closed correctly. It’s just a good way to avoid potential problems.

Include One of Your Pet’s Favorite Toys. It’s usually a good idea to put one of your pet’s favorite toys in the dog travel crate to comfort him during the trip.

Before your flight, try to feed your dog 4 to 5 hours before the flight. Do not feed him right before the trip, as the stress and movement may upset his stomach .

Don’t hold back on water though – give your dog plenty of water so that he doesn’t get dehydrated. Also make sure to take your dog for a walk before putting him in his pet kennel and handing him over to the staff. This will help him relax and give him the chance to relieve himself before takeoff.

Is it safe for dogs to fly in cargo?

Flying dogs in cargo is generally pretty safe. Airlines take many precautions to ensure your pet is kept safe and healthy during the flight, even when they’re in the cargo section of the airplane. The cargo area where live animals are kept is temperature controlled and appropriately maintained.

However, there are always some risks involved in flying a dog in cargo – especially if you have an older dog or a dog who has health issues. Due to the extra danger presented to brachycephalic breeds (such as pugs and bulldogs), these breeds are barred from flying altogether.

Which airlines fly dogs in cargo?

Very few airlines currently fly dogs in cargo. Many airlines stopped flying dogs in the cargo hold in recent years, and the ones that do have many breed restrictions. Of the major U.S. airlines, only Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines fly dogs in the cargo hold.

United Airlines, Jet Blue, and Delta no longer allow dogs to fly in the cargo hold of the aircraft.

Many airlines stopped flying pets in the cargo due to COVID, and then simply never restarted the service again.

Flying a dog in the cabin of the aircraft usually costs between $100 to $300 per pet. Flying a pet in the cargo section of the plane can vary considerably depending on the size of the dog, ranging from $100 to $500.

I can’t imagine why anyone would use a cheap plastic crate to transport their dog(s). Invest in a Zinger, they make dog crates that are airline approved. With 12 sizes to choose from, finding a crate that fits your dog(s) won’t be a problem.

Trying to move to rescued dogs from Puerto Rico to Massachusetts, June 2018 travel. what airlines would you recommend? The more affordable the better.

I was just wondering if any one has any experience flying with their pet who were unable to fly direct. I will be flying from Canada to Croatia next year with my two dogs and there are no direct flights available. Stop-overs are in Munich or Frankfort. I have a big dog and he has traveled twice to the Uk from the USA in cargo with no issues. Booked by my self with no “dog travel companies “He is now 2 and too big to fly direct into Manchester so option was LHR with one of these such companies at a cost between $2-3000 or go in to Frankfurt Booked by myself with Lufthansa at a cost of $400. Mmmm also Frankfurt have a quicker turnaround for release of the dog 1 hour as opposed to up to 8hours.. I have no experience going via Munic but Frankfurt have proven to be great. Hope this helps

He has a ton of information and knows all the regulations for international travel. Also really check around for flight prices they massively vary. I’m flying from Newark to Germany $400 each way for the dog. Some airlines charge over $2500 as you have to go with a pet travel agent….

However, if you are flying with Lufthansa you can book your dog in as excess baggage in cargo. (Note, excess baggage in cargo is different from cargo)IF the crate is within the dimensions shown on their website. It is a very generous size and may suit your needs. Also it’s a set fee, largest crate is $400. If it’s bigger than that it has to go in cargo and you have to use a pet travel company which is far more expensive…hope that helps

We talked specs with a pet travel expert — Danny Romero’s a journalist and travel expert who’s adventured in 22 different countries with his pup Rocky. Here are a few more things to consider

Aside from keeping your dog safe, the ideal travel dog crate will be spacious, well-ventilated, and a place of comfort for your pup.

Make sure it’s sturdy — The last travel mishap you need is a broken zipper, torn strap, or busted plastic on your travel dog crate. You definitely don’t want it breaking mid-trip. Invest in a high-quality option from the start!  A warranty is never a bad idea.

Think about appropriate ventilation — Your dog should have plenty of ventilation in its crate, whether it’s a plastic, metal, or fabric crate.

Think about weight — If you’ll be dashing from terminal to terminal, consider adding wheels or having a very lightweight carrier that’s easy to bring along.

If you can, do a trial run — You don’t want to get frustrated with learning how to use the crate latches, zippers, etc. while you’re dealing with the stress of travel. Make sure to do a few trial runs (and break downs, if it does so) prior to your travel date. Otherwise, just make sure to pick one with free return shipping.

Travel tips

Travel isn’t just stressful for humans. Dogs can feel your worry and tension, too. If possible, try and plan ahead (and prepare) as much as possible before the trip. No matter your mode of transportation, do your best to keep your dog comfortable. Traveling by car

Just as you buckle up, you’ll want to keep your dog secured in their crate for the duration of the trip.  If not using a crate, don’t let your pooch hang out the window (as cute as that is to see in your side-view mirror, it runs a risk of debris getting into their eyes or ears).

A few other tips for the road trip: 

• Get in some short car trips before the big travel day
• Never leave a dog alone in a hot car crated up
• Stretch your legs and break up driving after a few hours at a time
• Bring a favorite toy or bone to make your dog feel secure
• Give your dog ⅓ of their normal food intake prior to travel and to avoid an upset tummy

Note: If you don’t want to use a crate to secure your pooch, consider a seatbelt restraint. It’s an affordable option that allows your dog a little more freedom to do fun dog things like look out the window. 🐶

Taking to the skies

Airports are notorious for long lines and delays. Aside from getting there with plenty of time to spare before your flight, make sure you allow your dog to stretch and get some fresh air, too. They’ll be crated up for a good amount of time (even without delays), so a final outdoor potty break is a good idea prior to check-in.

Note: Some airlines specialize in taking care of dogs who fly. In fact, American Airlines flew the U.S. Naval Academy’s mascot to its college bowl game. Every airline is different. Some may only allow service or emotional support dogs to fly in the cabin while others need to go below in cargo. Call ahead before you book.

Traveling with a dog is a skill

Preparation is key to making sure traveling with your pet is successful as it reduces anxiety for you and them. Create a master to-do list for yourself and include your pet’s needs on it, too, so you don’t forget anything major.

Another great idea? The American Kennel Club recommends bringing along current pictures of your dog in the event they get lost.

And last but not least, try to stick to similar routines to reduce anxiety for your pet (keep evening walk schedules, if possible, for example). This will give your pet a sense of comfort that not all is changing in their world.

Pet Travel Crates

Notice: Airline-Approved Kennel — No pet transport kennels are pre-approved by the airlines, the airline associations, or USDA even if product labels make such claims. Please ensure that you purchase the strongest and most secure kennel you can find. Select dog breeds require transport in a reinforced crate.

One of the most important steps you can take to ease the stress of travel for your pet is to make sure it becomes familiar with its kennel. Purchase the travel kennel as far in advance as possible. Veterinarians recommend leaving the kennel door open in the house with treats or a familiar object inside so that your pet may spend time near the pet crate and perhaps venture inside on its own. Since it is important that your pet be as relaxed as possible during the flight, familiarization with the kennel is essential.

All kennels must follow the requirements below:

 Each travel kennel should contain no more than one adult dog or cat, or no more than two puppies or kittens younger than six months, of comparable size, and under 20 pounds (9 kg) each.

• Dogs and cats cannot travel together in the same container.
• The kennel must be constructed of rigid plastic, wood or metal. The roof must be solid with no doors or ventilation openings.
• The kennel must have ventilation on three sides for travel within the 50 United States and Puerto Rico. The kennel must have ventilation on four sides for travel to and from all other destinations and for short-nosed dogs traveling to any destination.
• The kennel must be large enough for your pet to freely sit and stand with its head erect, turn around and lie down in a normal position.
• Your pet’s head or ear tips, whichever is higher, must not touch the top of the crate. If your pet’s kennel does not provide enough room for your pet to stand and sit, without the head touching the top of the container, you will need to purchase a larger kennel before your pet can fly. Approved kennels may be available for sale at many pet supply stores.
• Airlines require an additional 3 inches of height clearance when transporting your pet to and from any destination outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Short-nosed dogs require a kennel one size larger.
• The kennel door must be made of metal. Plastic and Fiberglass™ doors, including side plastic latches, are prohibited because they are not strong enough to protect animals during normal handling.
• All kennel hardware must be secure and in good working condition. A metal nut and bolt must be secured in each hole that is in place to connect the top and bottom of the kennel. Please note that it’s common for kennels to have nuts and bolts that are metal and covered with a plastic coating on the outside, and those are acceptable.
• Snap-sided kennels or kennels with plastic side latches will not be accepted, unless the shipper drills holes and adds metal nuts and bolts to secure the snap or latch closures.
• Two dishes (one for food and one for water) must be attached to the inside of the kennel but also be accessible from the outside of the kennel so they can be filled from outside the kennel without opening the door.
• The door must close securely. In accordance with federal regulations, animals must be accessible in the event of an emergency.
• Regulations require that any wheels must be locked or otherwise rendered inoperable. Kennel wheels must be either removed or taped to prevent the kennel from rolling in transit.
• The floor must be solid and leak proof and contain absorbent material, such as shredded black-and-white printed newspaper.

• Medication, including over-the-counter or prescription (United does not administer medications.)
• Thick blankets, bedding or similar items
• Straw, hay or wood shavings are prohibited for international shipments

• Kennels with doors or ventilation openings on top

• Collapsible kennels
• Snap-sided kennels or kennels with plastic side latches that are not secured by metal nuts and bolts

Just as traveling can be stress-inducing for people , it can make animals just as (if not more) anxious. Flying or traveling by car with a cat or dog can be tough, and when you add in unexpected delays or traffic, the whole experience can quickly turn into a nightmare.

Between years of traveling with my own pets and transporting cats for my family’s North Carolina-based rescue, Tabby Trail Rescue , I know this struggle far too well. I’ve been in 10-plus hour delays, never-ending traffic, and so much more that such ordeals underscore the importance of having great travel gear for your pets to make it all a bit more bearable for yourself and your furry friends. 

In fact, I had a nightmare of my own a few months ago when I was stuck at the Charlotte Douglas Airport for 10-plus hours with my cat, Wanda — and if it wasn’t for implementing the advice and travel regimen that I've developed over the years (which includes using the expandable Tdhdike Cat Carrier ), I would’ve had to forfeit the trip entirely. Best Diffusers, Sprays, and Treats for Traveling

Ellis stresses that, when it comes to traveling, “the best thing you can do is plan your trip around creating a stress-free environment for your pet.” And while this undoubtedly means making sure that you have reliable carriers and other stress-reducing toys (we’ll get to those) on hand, this also means traveling with extra add-ons that biologically reduce stress, too. Remember: While we can’t control the weather or flight delays, we can control the small bubble of environment that we create for our pets. 

For just that, I swear by the Comfort Zone Cat Calming Spray to spray in my cat’s carrier (or my car) before a trip. It uses pheromone technology to reduce stress in cats. And when I’m all set up in a hotel or rental, I always plug in a Feliway Calming Diffuser to help my cat adjust to a new environment. Best Travel Crates, Carriers, and Leashes

I’m fortunate that my cats and all of my family’s pets relatively enjoy their crates and carriers, and actually sleep in them when we're on the go. But if you are about to travel, it’s important to alleviate a bit of the stress of the unknown by making sure that they are used to the crate and/or carrier ahead of time. Ellis recommends that you should “introduce crate to their regular routine, feeding them meals inside it, and gradually increasing their time spent in the crate (no longer than an hour or two) can help desensitize them and make them feel like they’re in a safe place.” 

I recommend getting one that is already airline-approved so you don’t have a bunch of carriers just laying around. Best Travel Litter Boxes, Poop Bags, and Other Bathroom Tips

Your mode of transportation is incredibly important to consider when traveling with pets, especially in regards to their bathroom breaks. While there's more control driving cross-country with your pet, sometimes you can’t beat the convenience of a flight. Whichever method of transportation you choose, Ellis encourages travelers to “loosely plan options for pee breaks and stops along the way" as they "can help you avoid getting into crowded and stressful situations.” 

It’s easy for us humans to find a public bathroom during transport, but that isn't the case when you're traveling with pets, so it’s important to have a travel litter box or ample poop bags packed for your trip. I don’t know about you, but my pets are absolute toy fiends . I have more little stuffed animals and string toys than I could  possibly ever count. Health Checklist Before Travel

Before you embark on any trip with your pet, you should always make sure to have your vet’s information written down as well as copies of your pet’s medical history on hand in the case of an emergency. Personally, I opt to keep these important documents in a laminated binder , but having it digitally on your phone or easily accessible by email are equally viable options. And if your trip entails any kind of outdoor component, make sure that your pet is up to date on their vaccinations and their flea and tick preventive treatments. I personally always use NextStar , but consult with your veterinarian for the best option for your pet.

USAID worker killed in Israel, agency says

A staff member with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) died Friday in the Israeli port city of Jaffa, the agency announced.

The male staffer was with USAID’s West Bank and Gaza mission, the agency said in a brief statement.

USAID did not provide details on the circumstances around his death or his identity or citizenship.

“He was a dedicated member of our team for more than two decades, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues,” USAID said.

USAID is working with the US Embassy to work out details about the fatal incident and its follow-up investigation, it said.

US expects Iran to carry out direct strikes against targets inside Israel, sources say

The United States currently expects Iran will carry out strikes against multiple targets inside Israel and that Iranian proxies could also be involved in carrying out the attacks, according to a senior administration official and a source familiar with the intelligence.  

The targets would likely be both inside Israel and around the region.

The beginning of a state-on-state conflict between Iran and Israel would mark a serious escalation in the region that the US has hoped to avoid.

US sees Iran moving military assets including drones and cruise missiles, sources say

The US observed Iran moving military assets around internally, including drones and cruise missiles, signaling that it is possibly preparing to attack Israeli targets from inside its own territory, according to two people familiar with US intelligence. 

It is not clear whether Iran is preparing to strike from its soil as part of an initial attack, or if it is posturing to try to deter Israel or the US from conducting a possible counter strike on its territory. 

One of the people said the US had observed Iran readying as many as 100 cruise missiles.

Some context: The Iranians want their retaliatory strike on Israel — a response to the Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate last week in Damascus — to be "significant," one of the people familiar with the intelligence said. But they also want to avoid getting embroiled in a direct war with Israel and the US, CNN has reported, which is why US intelligence has assessed that Iran may use its proxy forces to launch the first attack.

Israeli settlers storm village in West Bank and kill at least 1 Palestinian. Here's what you should know

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars — and leaving at least one Palestinian dead — in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials. 

The settlers attacked Al-Mughayyir village, east of Ramallah, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, according to Amin Abu-Alia, the head of the village council. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

Here are other headlines you should know:

• More Israeli attacks: An Israeli airstrike early Friday killed at least 29 people and injured dozens more after troops targeted a house belonging to the well-known Al-Tabatibi family in eastern Gaza City, according to a local health official. Israeli forces also surrounded and attacked the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, wounding several journalists and at least one other person. And in the occupied West Bank, troops killed two Hamas members in a raid on the city of Tubas, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.
• Hezbollah-Israel clashes: Around 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon on Friday evening, according to the Israeli military. Some were intercepted and the rest fell in open areas, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. Israeli warplanes also carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, the IDF said.
• Iranian threats: US President Joe Biden told reporters Friday he expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," with the White House adding that there is a "very credible" threat of Iranian retaliatory strikes against Israel. Additionally, the US Defense Department is moving additional assets to the Middle East region, a defense official told CNN, as the US and Israel brace for the potential attack . Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and US Central Command Commander Gen. Erik Kurilla on Friday discussed preparations for the  potential attack .
• Warnings amid Iranian threats: France , Germany, Canada and the United States are among countries that are warning their citizens not to travel to the region due to the threat of an Iranian attack against Israel.
• Humanitarian aid: The Israeli military does not understand how humanitarian operations work, a top United Nations official said Friday, maintaining there is a "degree of mistrust" that needs to be resolved between the IDF and nongovernmental organizations on the ground in Gaza.
• Sanctions: The European Council has  adopted sanctions  against three Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad entities , in light of "their responsibilities in the brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks" that occurred across Israel on October 7. The US is also sanctioning four leaders of Hamas’ cyber and drone operations based in Gaza and Lebanon, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced on Friday. 

US will attempt to intercept launches at Israel if feasible, US officials say

The US will attempt to intercept any weapons launched at Israel if it’s feasible to do so, two US officials told CNN, in an indication of the level of ongoing cooperation between the two militaries before an anticipated Iranian attack .

US Navy forces in the Red Sea have previously intercepted long-range missiles launched from the Houthis in Yemen toward Israel. US forces in Iraq and Syria could also potentially intercept drones and rockets targeting northern Israel, depending on the location from which they’re launched.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the commander of US Central Command, has been in Israel meeting with the country’s security leadership. On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, met with Kurilla.

There have been a number of conversations where US officials have urged Israel not to escalate the situation in retaliating against Iran, according to one of the US officials. 

Remember: An Iranian attack is expected in response to Israel’s deadly strike of Tehran's consulate in Damascus, Syria, last week.

The Damascus attack was the latest incident to stoke fears of a wider regional conflict breaking out in the Middle East during Israel's campaign in Gaza.

Diplomatic efforts: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held a slew of calls to foreign counterparts aimed at pressuring Iran not to attack Israel.

The top US diplomat spoke with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday, according to a readout from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Blinken also spoke with the Turkish, Chinese and Saudi foreign ministers in recent days, Miller said.

Israeli settlers kill at least 1 Palestinian while storming West Bank village

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials. 

At least one Palestinian man was killed when shots were fired by Israeli settlers in the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, according to the head of the village council Amin Abu-Alia. He said he identified the killed Palestinian as his 26-year-old relative named Jihad Abu-Alia, who was meant to get married this summer.

At least 25 others were injured in the rampage, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, the scale of which has not been seen since hundreds of settlers stormed through the villages of  Turmusayya  and  Huwara  in two separate incidents last year. 

Between 1,000 and 1,200 settlers surrounded the village, and around 500 stormed it just after midday local time on Friday, blocking all the roads in the area, Abu-Alia told CNN.

He added that Israeli security forces informed Palestinian officials that the settlers were looking for a 14-year-old Israeli boy who had gone missing earlier in the day.

They attacked the village, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, Abu-Alia said. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

According to Abu-Alia, the Israeli military arrived at the scene at around 3 p.m. and didn’t stop the settlers from attacking the village. Israeli soldiers allowed them to raid homes, prevented Palestinian residents from moving around and blocked ambulances from reaching the injured, he added.  

Abu-Alia told CNN settlers stole approximately 70 sheep from the Palestinian village.

In response to a question by CNN, the IDF said “violent riots were instigated in multiple locations in the area” following the search for the boy.

Israel says airstrikes targeted Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The areas include the Aita al-Shaab and the Taybeh in southern Lebanon, said Avichay Adraee, I DF spokesperson for Arab media,  in a post on X.

"During the day, several shells were fired from Lebanon towards the Upper Galilee region, without causing any casualties. IDF forces attacked the sources of fire," Adraee added. 

The Israeli airstrikes were before the 40 rockets that were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel Friday evening and claimed by Hezbollah.

Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen "sooner than later"

US President Joe Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," he told reporters at the White House Friday.

“I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later,” Biden said when asked how imminent an attack on Israel was.

Asked what his message to Tehran is right now, the president said “Don’t.”

In response to more shouted questions from reporters asking if American troops were at risk, Biden returned to the podium and said that the United States is "devoted” to the defense of Israel. 

“We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” Biden said.

Remember: The United States says it is on high alert for a significant Iranian retaliatory attack following Israel's deadly strike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus last week, raising fears of a wider regional war. There remains a “real,” “credible” and “viable” threat of Iran launching strikes, the White House said earlier Friday, following Israel’s attack on  a diplomatic compound in Syria that killed three Iranian generals.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
