What to Eat

Though rice is the staple food of the state, what makes it interesting is that it is cooker either in a hollow bamboo or over coal which adds a distinctive flavour to it. From vegetables to pickles to curries, every delicacy has a hint of bamboo shoot which makes it mandatory for you to taste it. The Apatani people make a famous kind of pickle known as Pika pila that is a result of bamboo shoot and pork fat.

Apong, which is nothing but rice beer, is a must try when you go visiting the hills. Another locally made alcohol is the Marua which is made out of millet. Sounds quite healthy, isn’t it? Then comes the usual momos, thupkas and various dishes made out of meat.

A 7 Day Travel Guide and Itinerary for Arunachal Pradesh : Experience the Land of Dawn Lit Mountains

The land of dawn lit mountains, Arunachal Pradesh , with its vast forest cover, pristine valleys and snow capped Himalayas, is one of India’s best kept secrets. Arunachal Pradesh is located in the North Eastern tip of India and is bordered by three countries, Bhutan , China and Myanmar and two Indian states in the south, Assam and Nagaland. This state, though has gained some popularity among travellers in the recent past, owing to the famous Ziro Festival of Music , it is still far from commercialisation as compared to Himalayan destinations in the northern part of India like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Travelling to Arunachal Pradesh is about setting on an adventure in true sense where travellers encounter multiple layers of history and culture, learn to communicate straight from their hearts and learn to enjoy the wilderness. One would not find luxurious stays across the state but can expect to put up at home-stays run by locals having basic amenities where safety and hygiene is ensured. In several places, camp sites are also available where travellers could spend a night, enjoying barbecue and bonfire under starry skies.

It may be noted that Arunachal Pradesh shares its borders with China which is the primary reason why entry to the state is not kept unmonitored for travellers. There are two different processes for Indian and Foreign Nationals to obtain the entry permits, which are explained below.

• Indian citizens are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
• Your itinerary should be finalised before you apply for the permit as the permit will be issued based on districts you mention. Please note that your itinerary must follow any of the 12 tourist circuits created by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board.
• An eILP can be acquired from this portal or it can also be obtained from Guwahati Airport.
• You would need scanned copies of your Identity proofs and passport sized photographs to apply for the ILP.
• The Inner Line Permit is of two kinds, one for single applicant and the other is for groups where the details of primary applicant are to be entered.
• An ILP is issued for a maximum period of 30 days.
• The fee is charged per person per district you are visiting. You can expect to pay a few hundred for the permit.
• You have to enter the name and contact number of a local reference. You may speak to your homestay owners beforehand and use their reference. All of them are aware of the drill and are helpful.
• Foreign Nationals are required to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
• Even with a valid PAP, foreigners are not allowed to visit certain areas in the state. Thus, a proper research is essential.
• Please note that your itinerary must follow any of the 12 tourist circuits created by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board.
• The PAP is to be acquired manually from the Deputy Resident Commissioner Office of Arunachal Pradesh located in Guwahati. You’d have to pay a fee of $50 in the office.
• It is important to note that a PAP is only issued to groups, if you wish to travel throughout the state. For solo travelers, the permit is only issued to travel to Ziro Valley, Tawang and Bomdila. You may look for other group of travelers to obtain the full permit.
• The office functions between 10am to 5pm and applications for obtaining a PAP are accepted only till 2pm.
• A local reference and their contact number is a must. You may speak to your homestay owners beforehand and use their reference.
• An alternative option is to apply through a travel agency to save your time and energy and in case you are unable to find a group as a solo traveler. However, expect to pay a few extra thousand rupees if you go by this process.

The best months to visit Arunachal Pradesh, and follow this 7 Day Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary,  are April-May and October-November. The weather is pleasant during these months making your travel quite comfortable.

High altitude regions like Tawang, Sela Pass etc. would be covered in snow during the winter months. So if you are comfortable to travel through spine chilling cold and fancy to see a white Arunachal, winter is your month. But make sure you check the weather forecast beforehand to avoid roadblocks or any other mishaps.

In order to make the most of your Arunachal Pradesh Sightseeing Trip, you should avoid the monsoon months that last between June to September.

A detailed 7 day itinerary to travel to Arunachal Pradesh

Day 1 – guwahati to bomdila.

The first day of your travel shall necessarily contain two segments. First, to reach Guwahati and second, to travel to Bomdila from Guwahati. It is advisable to arrive in Guwahati by early noon so that you have enough time to get to the bus depot and find yourself a bus.

• Fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati.
• Take a train to Guwahati.
• From Guwahati Airport or Railway Station, head to ISBT bus depot from where you can find overnight buses to Bomdila.
• You would reach Bomdila the next morning.

Day 2 – Explore Bomdila

As you reach Bomdila on the second day, check in to your hotel/homestay and freshen up to start the day and explore the town.

Surrounded by various snow capped peaks, Bombila is a scenic destination situated in the Eastern Himalayas. A home to various indigenous tribes, Bomdila is a place where you can explore the monasteries, go hiking and walk through the apple orchards and valleys covered with flowers.  

• Visit the Bomdila Monastery built in 1965, divided into Upper Gompa, Middle Gompa and Lower Gompa out of which the Upper Gompa is the biggest one located on a steep hill.
• Hike up to RR Hill , the highest point in Bomdila to enjoy the spectacular and panoramic views of Bhutan and Tibet.
• If you still have some time to explore, you may take a vehicle to head to Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary , 20 kms outside the town. If you are interested in bird watching, you should definitely not miss this place.
• Head to the apple orchards to take a stroll and also buy some apples for yourself.

Day 3 – Bomdila to Tawang (Explore Sela Pass and Sela Lake enroute)

This leg of the journey might not work too well if you are travelling solo. You can only stop at Sela Lake and Sela Pass if you have reserved a vehicle all for yourself, not a feasible option for a solo traveller. The cost splits in a group.

There are shared sumos that cost around INR 500 till Tawang. The journey might take somewhere around 8 hours. Solo travellers can also  manage to tag along with other groups to share the costs of a reserved vehicle.

After arriving in Tawang, spend the evening walking through the mystic streets and gazing at the snowy peaks of Eastern Himalayas and sleep early to compensate for the tiring journey.

The arrangement of vehicle to travel to Bum-la Pass and the various lakes must be done on this day itself so that permits can be easily obtained.

Tawang is one of those places to which photographs and words do no justice explaining the beauty. It is a remote settlement at an altitude of 305 meters, set against mighty Himalayas, dotted with glacial lakes, it is rightly known as the hidden paradise. Though situated in the extreme corner of the country, it is well developed in general. There are plenty of options to stay, many restaurants to eat at.

You can divide the two days in Tawang into nearby locations to visit, which can be covered on foot and the ones situated a bit far off, like Bum-la Pass, for which you’d require a vehicle.

• Start the day by visiting the Tawang Monastery , the biggest monastery in India and second largest in the world. A three storied monastery situated at a height of 3000 meters is no less than a scenic wonder. Explore the library the old scriptures to learn about Buddhism.
• Head to Urgelling Gompa , a rather small but historically significant monastery which is the birthplace of the 6 th Dalai Lama.
• Visit the Tawang War Memorial , which commemorates the martyrdom of 2140 Indian soldiers of Indo-China War. You can also check the souvenir shop beside the War Memorial.
• In the evening, head to the cosy cafe, Dharma Coffee House and browse through their books.
• Relish on a sumptuous dinner at Dragon  or Orange Restaurant Lounge Bar.

If you wish to book a vehicle to take you to all of these places, you may opt for the same. A Tata Sumo can charge you between INR 2000-3000 for the whole day, depending on whether it is the peak season or not.

On this day, you are all set to travel to the wilderness and travel towards Bum La Pass , the Indo-China border. A Tata Sumo generally takes INR 5000 for the entire day to take you to these places. It works fine when you are travelling in a group but not for solo travelers. People traveling solo may tag along with another group at the taxi stand. Talk to the drivers or your hotel management beforehand so that they may be able to suggest you about other groups who are moving ahead on the same direction. There are bike rentals as well which is the best bet for all adrenaline junkies. However remember that the terrain is extremely rough so set out in a bike only if you are experienced enough.

You need a permission from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District to go to Bum La Pass. Situated at an altitude of 4633 meters, it is a place where Indian Soldiers guard the country. The Pass is historically and culturally significant as well for it is known that Dalai Lama had entered India through this Pass.

Visit the famous Sangetsar Lake , more famously known as Madhuri Lake, named after the actress Madhuri Dixit as she had shot a few scenes of a movie in this spot. Also, stop by the beautiful Panga Teng Tso Lake . These lakes remain frozen during winters.

Day 6 – Tawang – Bomdila – Tezpur

It is your last day in Tawang and you have to travel a long distance on Day 6 of this 7 Day Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary. Start early from Tawang so that you reach Bomdila by noon. To be on the safe side, book a seat in the shared vehicle a day earlier so that you don’t get pushed to the last seats which is very uncomfortable. The fare for a seat in Tata Sumo is INR 500 to reach Bomdila. You can stop in Bomdila for a while and have your lunch there. There are buses that start in the evening for Guwahati.

In case you do not manage to get a direct bus from Bomdila, you may break the travel at Tezpur. In that case the travel looks like this : Bomdila to Tezpur (Tata Sumo) and Tezpur to Guwahati (Bus). If you are opting for this alternative, you may spend the night in Tezpur and travel from Tezpur to Guwahati the next morning.

To be on the safe side, book a flight that is scheduled post 3pm from Guwahati. If you are taking a train, that too, should be scheduled in the second half of the day. This is to ensure that any unavoidable delay on the way from Bomdila/Tezpur to Guwahati does not affect your final leg of the journey.

Day 1 : Guwahati to Bomdila

Day 2 : Explore Bomdila

Day 3 : Bomdila to Tawang (explore Sela Lake & Sela Pass)

Day 4 : Explore Tawang

Day 5 : Bum-La pass | Sangetsar Lake | Panga Teng Tso Lake

Day 6 : Tawang – Bomdila – Tezpur

Day 7 : Tezpur – Guwahati | Fly out from Guwahati

I have not been to Arunachal Pradesh till date but have surely had it on my list. I do hope to stay in the state for at least 7 days and I will definitely be referring to this guide for sure.

This is so detailed. I have been to Arunachal and the region is so lovely that a week is too less. Surprisingly, when we went into Arunachal, the weather was good. And when we were on the way back from Sela, it was snowing. So I got to see many faces of Nature there.

You got lucky, I must say. Yes, 7 days are too short to explore the beautiful state.

Arunachal Pradesh, “the land of the dawn-lit mountains”, is one of India’s last unspoilt wildernesses. A wealth of fascinating cultures, peoples and tribes – plus a staggering five hundred species of orchid – are found in its glacial terrain, alpine meadows and subtropical rainforests.

The capital, Itanagar, is north of the Brahmaputra across from Jorhat. In the far west of the state, the road from Bhalukpong on the Assamese border to the monastery of Tawang climbs steadily through rugged hills, streams and primaeval forests, crossing the dramatic Sela Pass (4300m) midway. Along the route lie the Buddhist towns of Bomdila and Dirang. In the far northeast, both cloud and snow leopards reside in Namdapha National Park. Arunachal’s remote and unspoilt central highlands, home to myriad tribes, hides some of the best the Himalayas have to offer, including the mysterious Buddhist land of Pemako.

Despite its beauty, tourism has been discouraged because of the extremely sensitive border with Chinese-occupied Tibet in the north and Myanmar in the east. In 1962, the Chinese invaded Arunachal Pradesh, reaching the outskirts of Tezpur in Assam , a 300km incursion that India has never forgotten. Since then, a strong military stance has been adopted in the area with China laying claim to much of the state. All visitors require a permit to enter the state.

Many still follow the Donyi-Polo religion, an ancient belief that pre-dates Buddhism. Its followers see the sun as female energy and the moon as male energy and involves animal sacrifices to appease the Gods. Arunachal Pradesh being diverse in indigenous tribes is also diverse in linguistics, with over 50 different dialects.

Arunachal Pradesh’s tribal groups

Arunachal Pradesh is stunningly diverse, with 26 major tribal groups, each with its own culture, dialect, dress, social structure and traditions. Polygamy remains common among many of them, as does the religious blend of Hindu, Buddhist and animist beliefs. The main ethnic groups include Monpas, Sherdukpens, Apatani, Wanchos, Noctes, Tangsas, Singphos, Khamptis, Mishmis, Mijis, Galos, Padams, Miwongs, Tagins and Puroiks. However, within all the groups, tradition is slowly giving way to modern influences, particularly among the younger generation, who increasingly wear Western clothes, watch Bollywood flicks and eat Chinese food.

Just under 400km northeast of Guwahati, Itanagar, the state’s quiet capital, is of little interest but an important transport hub for anyone heading to the central plateau. You may find you need to spend a night or two here organizing permits and logistics. Surrounded by low, wooded hills, the town spreads along a 4km stretch of road running between Zero Point, where the better hotels are located, and Ganga Market, the animated main bazaar, which has cheaper accommodation and the bus station. Six kilometres west of town, Gyakar Sinyi (Ganga Lake), cupped in a jungle hollow, is a popular picnic spot.

Pristine forests mark the watersheds of the Siang, Dibang and Lohit rivers – an unspoilt wilderness gradually opening up to visitors in search of exploration and adventure. The town of Ziro (Hapoli) makes a good base for exploring this land of rainclouds, forests, swirling paddy terraces and the fascinating Apatani villages where animist beliefs and the worship of Donyi-Polo (sun and moon) are still very much alive. The Apatanis are just one of the many tribes inhabiting these remote forests and hills of Central Arunachal. Beyond Ziro, the fragile highway etches through forested hills to the settlement of Along. Further south, the River Siang, battling through the jungles, merges into the mighty Brahmaputra at Pasighat, close to the urban centres of Upper Assam. Further east, the remote valleys of the Dibang and Lohit rivers, inhabited by the Mishmi, Singpho and Khampti tribes, descend from snow-covered passes through subtropical forests where, in the far east corner of the state, the pristine Namdapha National Park harbours a huge variety of fauna and flora.

Namdapha National Park

The beautifully remote Namdapha National Park, covering an area of 1985 square kilometres, is unique for its massive range of altitudes (200–4500m) and its huge biodiversity Close to the Burmese border, Namdapha is home to tigers, leopards (clouded and snow), elephants, red pandas, deer and the endangered Hoolock gibbon, although you are unlikely to spot any big wildlife on a short visit.

Bordered by Bhutan and Tibet, the isolated hills and valleys of West Arunachal climb to some of the remotest glaciers and peaks in the Himalayas. Most of the 6000m-plus mountains – except Gori Chen (6488m) and Nyegi Kangsang (7047m) – remain completely unknown. The main road, the best in the state, runs from Bhalukpong on the Assamese border to near the Tibet frontier at Tawang, ending high in the mountains at one of Asia’s largest monasteries. On this spectacular journey you rise from the steamy foothills to the high market town of Bomdila with its Buddhist monasteries and occasional yak; further on lies Dirang, an ancient fortress town, before the climb up through the Sela Pass to Tawang.

Some 180km northwest of Bomdila, the great Buddhist monastery of Tawang, the largest in India, dominates the land of the Monpas. Perched at around 3500m and looking out onto a semicircle of peaks that are snow-capped for much of the year, the monastery teeters on the edge of Tibet and peers down to Bhutan. This feels like the end of the road, with long cold nights and plenty of snow in winter.

A bone of contention between India and China, Tawang has always been of special significance to Tibetans and the Dalai Lama who fled Tibet in 1959 and travelled surreptitiously through here on his way into exile. His pre-incarnation, the Sixth Dalai Lama, was born on the outskirts of the town.

Tawang blew my mind. I couldn’t believe I was still standing in India, let alone this century!

Tawang is the definition of tradition and cultural values still well and truly alive today. In the 21st century, it’s so easy to forget the world outside of our phones and social networks.

But, here, you’ll forget all that in this Himalayan haven, there’s far too much to see.

Tawang is sandwiched between South Tibet (China) and Bhutan, so it’s an amazing mix of cultures, religion, temples, food and people.

Although I only spent a few days here, what I did experience was on another level of culture trip.

Tibetan Buddhist temples, monks and nun’s, Monpa tribes, fluffy puppies, cuddly yaks, prayer wheels, chai and Himalayan mountains are all here waiting for you.

How to get to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh?

Tawang is in North East India in a state called Arunachal Pradesh, in between Bhutan and South Tibet (China).

There are no flights here and the best way to arrive is by car via the Sela Pass.   But, it’s not all plain sailing.

It took me two attempts to reach here due to the heavy snow! The best way to experience this part of the world is through a tour with Holiday Scout .

The best place to stay in Tawang? Tawang hotels

If you need to find a clean and comfortable Tawang hotel, then I would suggest the friendly Tenzin Guesthouse.

1. the scenery will make your jaw drop.

Here, it’s all about the journey and not the destination.

Beyond heading to the town of Tawang in the Himalayas, the start of the journey in the district of Tawang provides the most awe-inspiring views.

You’ll wind through epic mountain peaks, cheer as you cross over the Sela pass , see cascading waterfalls , explore dense lush forests, fall in love with quaint Arunachal villages, and a whole lot more to boot. Cross over ancient Tibetan iron bridges.

From the bright yellow roofs of the monastery to the beautiful Buddhist temples, to the Brokpa huts with their beautiful herd of fluffy yaks.

You’ll have to pinch and ask yourself; is this real?

2. You’ll feel the history of the monastery speak to you

Tawang Monastery was built in the 17th century and it’s stood the test of time.

After Lhasa in Tibet, this is the second largest monastery in the entire world.

Although there is so much more to Tawang than just the monastery, you can’t deny it’s like a siren that pulls you in.

You’ll need at least a few hours as there is so much to explore.

It’s often referred to as a citadel in the city in its own right and as soon as you arrive you’ll know why; It’s absolutely huge!

It was built to house, feed, teach and cater for over 700 monks. That’s A LOT of space and food needed.

I met so many friendly monks while here. The little ones were the cutest!

They were so sweet trying to keep their eyes open and messing around in early morning prayer. We met them when they had finished their classes.

You can explore the museum which is here, the temples, the library and witness the life that goes on.

One of the highlights of my trip was watching the early morning prayers at first light.

3. The people will welcome you with open arms

As soon as I arrived I couldn’t get over the amazing hospitality. Our hotel, Tenzin Guesthouse, was gorgeous and warm (heaters were a lifesaver!).

The owners were just so friendly!

They welcomed us into the kitchen by the fire, put a hot cup of tea in your hands, cooked up some amazing homemade local food, and were genuinely curious to know you.

You didn’t feel like a stranger or you didn’t belong wherever you go.

4. You’ll discover that magic happens at sunrise

If you’re not a morning person, I would highly recommend changing that for a few days in Tawang.

I swear to you that something magic happens here at first light.

Firstly, it will be the purple hue of the mountains which will give you a buzz. Then, you can watch the monks chanting early doors around 6 am.

You’ll hear the sound of prayer fill the room. The rays of sunlight shine through the windows and smoke from the incense makes patterns in the air. It will send a chill up your spine.

Well, it will be that or how cold it is in the halls, haha!

Top tip: bring a pair of socks as you have to take your shoes off, don’t underestimate how freezing it is on the floor.

5. Hospitality can be found in the most unlikely places

In Tawang, I was invited in for Yak tea by a nun at the Thukje Choeling monastery and again in a hut with a Brokpa (nomad) shepherdess.

You’ll never know where you will find yourself and with whom you’ll be sharing stories over chai!

I couldn’t get over the kindness and welcoming nature of the people in Arunachal Pradesh. It was on a different level.

Everywhere felt like your home and you were greeted with open arms.

6. You’ll be mesmerised by the colours of the temples

The temples may look old and will wow you as they have stood the test of time but just wait until you get beyond closed doors.

The bursts of colour in the architecture, statues, and murals on the walls are the sort of thing that makes you stand back in awe.

It’s psychedelic and mesmerising. The detail and size of the religious statues are incredible.

You’ll wonder just how long they took to build and how many people have prayed to them over the centuries.

You’ll see religious tales and fables, symbols and symmetry, colourful patterns, prayer wheels in all different sizes. You won’t believe your eyes.

More Tawang temples

Beyond Tawang monastery, there are countless Buddhist temples and monasteries to explore.

But the best ones to check out while you’re here are the Ugyenling Monastery. This was the birthplace of the  6th Dalai Lama and the Thegtse Sang-ngag Choekhorling Monastery, in a place nearby called Kin-mey.

It was an incredible, colourful spectacle that I’ll never forget!

7. The fact you can meet, talk, drink and eat yak…yak everything

Yaks were everywhere in Tawang, in your teacup, on your plate, and grazing in the hills.

Personally, I LOVE yaks and gave a little squeal when I saw first saw them here.

If you’re not a fan of Yak butter tea (yep, it does what it says on the tin) then you’ll have to build your tolerance up!

They drink it everywhere here and most likely you’ll be offered a cup in place of chai.

Yak cheese is also a favourite staple amongst the locals in Arunachal Pradesh.

You’ll find it in chewing gum form (I tried it, wasn’t a fan), in curries, and in the pantries of nearly every household!

Yak’s provide wool for warmth, food for comfort, and tea for bringing people together in Tawang.

8. You’ll discover so much culture

When we first pulled up to the monastery, we watched monks practicing for a festival. They were dancing with painted masks, singing, and twirling.

I’d see women as old as 80 circling the temples 108 times, praying to Buddha and spinning prayer wheels and their beads.

On the full moon, nearly every local in Tawang was visiting the monastery with offerings of flowers, yak butter tea, and money.

They would offer themselves to God and pray for a prosperous month ahead.

Bunches of incense sticks were lit, sacred clothes were thrown to Buddha, and prayers in solitude were made.

The shepherdess was churning yak butter by hand 1000 times per kg while her husband was milking the yak by hand.

Tawang was like a cultural trip. It was old school. It was traditional. Why change something that’s worked for so long? It’s like experiencing another world.

9. The mountains will intimidate you…in a good way

The first thing I noticed when I entered Arunachal Pradesh was the size of the mountains here.

The height intimidated me, not just because I’m a shorty but the fact we were driving around them amazed me.

Driving over the Sela pass was beyond crazy. We were racing around roads 13,500ft. high!

When you reach Tawang, you’ll see 360-degree panoramic views of paradise.

Snow-capped peaks, statues of Buddha, the amazing sunrises and sunsets, and of course, the brightest of stars due to low light pollution.

10. You’ll be part of the action

I loved visiting places in Tawang. I wasn’t just an observer or a typical tourist there, I was taking part.

I was helping monks make candle wicks out of cotton, turning prayer wheels with locals, churning yak butter, making Momo’s, and lighting candles for happy blessings.

I think Tawang sticks with you long after you’ve gone because of what you experience there.

11. It will leave footprints in your heart forever

I had never heard of Tawang before I visited North East India and had no idea a place like this even existed.

So, it surprised me that when I left, I missed it so much!

It’s honestly like another world and I’m definitely planning on how I can make my way back again.

Tawang blew my mind and I know it will yours when you get here. You really can’t miss it when you make a visit to North East India!

A guide to backpacking in Arunachal Pradesh

Our travel guide to backpacking in Arunachal Pradesh, for those interested in exploring one of India’s most beautiful—and least visited—states. This  Arunachal Pradesh travel guide includes practical info and includes an itinerary for Arunachal Pradesh.

In the far northeastern corner of India lies Arunachal Pradesh, the Wild East of Indian tourism. Within its borders, snow-capped Himalayas encircle pristine golden valleys, and 24 unique tribes are scattered throughout its demanding, but photogenic, terrain. The Shangri La of the northeastern states , it begs to be explored, but is often ignored.

The easternmost of all Indian states, Arunachal Pradesh is far-removed from the Indian mainland, infrastructure is poor at best, and it requires pesky permits from both Indian and foreign tourists alike. It’s easy to see why it’s the least visited state in the country!

The slow trickle of tourists who go backpacking in Arunachal Pradesh is both a blessing and a curse. On the bright side, you won’t have to fight through swarms of tourists as you would in Himachal Pradesh  or Rajasthan , and the local people are much less likely to con you at every opportunity. On the downside, little tourism means information about the state is scarce.

That’s where we come in!

This Arunachal Pradesh travel guide doesn’t cover the entirety of the state—we’d need to do a hell of a lot of trekking for that—but it will cover the basics of travel to Arunachal Pradesh, “common” tourist destinations, and other tidbits of information you need to know. Tourist routes in Arunachal Pradesh

If you want to take a trip to Arunachal Pradesh, the first thing you need to do is decide where in Arunachal Pradesh you want to travel. You’ll need to know this for your permit application, as foreigner permits specifically state where the holder is allowed to go.

The Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board has created 12 “tourist routes” throughout the state. They include:

• Tezpur (Assam state) – Bhalukpong – Bomdila – Tawang
• Itanagar – Ziro – Daporijo – Aalo (Along) – Pasighat
• Pasighat – Jengging -Yingkiong – Tuting
• Tinsukia – Tezu -Hayuliang
• Margherita – Miao – Namdhapa – Vijoynagar
• Roing – Mayudia – Anini
• Tezpur (Assam state) – Seijosa – Bhalukpong
• Ziro – Palin – Nyapin – Sangram – Koloriang
• Doimukh – Sagalee – Pake Kessang – Seppa
• Aalo (Along) – Mechuka
• Daporijo – Taliha – Siyum – Nacho
• Jairampur – Manmao – Nampong – Pangsau Pass

You can find more information about each route on the (surprisingly decent) Arunachal Pradesh Tourism website . Unfortunately, it isn’t clear whether all these routes are open to foreign tourists.

Our one month route backpacking in Arunachal Pradesh

Below is the itinerary we used during 30 days of travel in Arunachal Pradesh, only using public transportation (Sumos). Our route begins and ends in two different locations in Assam. If you need to head back to Guwahati in the end, never fear—there’s always at least one bus or Sumo to Guwahati from places like Itanagar and Aalo.

What else? If we had more time—and knew to put it on our permit application—we would’ve liked to visit Tuting in the north.

When is the best time to travel to Arunachal Pradesh?

Generally speaking, April-May and October-November are the most ideal times to travel in Arunachal Pradesh.

Beyond that, the best time to plan an Arunachal Pradesh trip depends on where you’re going—and what you’re looking for!

The high altitude region of Tawang will be bitterly cold from November to February/March, though the pass to reach it is open year-round. Bring warm clothes if you’re off to peep the snowy peaks!

Monsoon in Arunachal Pradesh runs from June or July to September, though we were still pelted with gross amounts of rain in May. All of the northeastern states of India are prone to heavy rainfall, so monsoon isn’t the best time to visit.

Permits for travel in Arunachal Pradesh

Once you’ve figured out where you want to go, you’ll need to apply for a permit for travel in Arunachal Pradesh. There are two kinds of permits:

• Protected Area Permit (PAP): Required for foreign tourists. Valid for 30 days, costs $50, to be paid in rupees (3,450 Rs at the time of writing).
• Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for Indian nationals. Costs 400 Rs if you want to pick up on the same day, 100 Rs if not. Can be done online.

You can apply for a permit in Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati (Assam), and Itanagar (although you need a permit before you can enter Itanagar, so this option is only available to locals).

You can get a permit either through a tour agency or independently. It’s also possible to get the permit on the spot at the airport (400 Rs for Indians) if you fly into Guwahati, and at the Guwahati, Nahargalun, and Gumo train stations on arrival. There have been many reports of Indians getting a “rushed” ILP en-route to Arunachal with a little bit of hand greasing.

• Getting a Protected Area Permit in Guwahati, Assam (Foreigners)
• Apply for an Inner Line Permit online (Indians)

Once you’ve received your permit for Arunachal Pradesh, be sure to print out several copies, depending on how long you’ll be in Arunachal. You’ll need to provide them at checkpoints on the road and when checking in at hotels.

Note: In the past, it has been difficult for solo travelers to get permits to travel in Arunachal Pradesh. These days, it’s possible, but solo travelers are only allowed to travel the tourist routes that include Tawang and Ziro .

The following Arunachal Pradesh itinerary is based on our own experience. Note that all accommodation tips given are for places that accept foreign travelers — Indians often have more options regarding budget accommodation in Arunachal Pradesh. A Monpa town amidst the Himalayas with a notable Tibetan feel, Tawang is one of the most popular destinations on any Arunachal Pradesh trip. Its hills are dotted with more gompas (Buddhist monasteries) than you can count, and at almost 2,700 meters, its steep hills really pack a punch! If you’re in search of beautiful vistas and a bit of Buddhist culture, Tawang is the place for you.

How to get to Tawang

• 13-14 hours from Tezpur, Assam – Daily Sumo at 5:30 or 6 – 750 Rs
• 8 hours from Bomdila – Daily Sumo – 500 Rs
• 10 – 12 hours from Bomdila – Daily bus – 120 Rs
• 7 hours from Dirang – Daily Sumo

Where to stay in Tawang

Sleeping in Tawang can get a bit pricey, aside from the government-run accommodation. Expect to pay upwards of 1,000 Rs for a double if staying in a privately-run establishment.

• Arunachal Pradesh Tourist Lodge – 600 Rs for a spacious double with heater and private toilet – Take turnoff from Old Market street on the corner where Taste of Tawang is located, walk up the hill and it’ll be on your left
• Hotel Neha – 1,200 Rs for a double with balcony and private toilet – On main Old Market road, a bit down the hill from the main market
• Hotel Gayki Khang Zhang – 1,300 Rs for a deluxe double room in a hotel with what’s arguably the best view of the big monastery in town – It’s near the gated road to the big monastery, and it’s bright green and blue so you can’t miss it!

Things to do in Tawang

• Tawang Monastery – The massive monastery of the town, and the second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world
• Giant Buddha – Visit the large hilltop Buddha early in the morning or in the early evening to see people saying prayers as they circle the statue
• Urgelling Gompa – A small monastery where the 6 th Dalai Lama was born
• Madhuri Lake – Originally known as Sangetsar lake, about 25 km from Tawang. Foreigners might not be allowed – check on this before leaving.
• Sela Pass – An alpine lake in a 4,175 meter-high (13,700 ft) mountain pass, you’ll see it on the way to Tawang
• Iron bridge – Runs across the river between Kharsaneng and Mukto villages
• T. Tso Lake – A more peaceful lake to visit than Madhuri, only 17km from town
• Bum La Pass – The meeting point of India and China, sitting pretty at 4,600 meters (15,200 ft). Only Indians can visit, provided they have the proper permit .

Where to eat in Tawang

Most restaurants open late and close early (especially if it’s raining), so options can be limited. Consider breakfasting with your hotel.

• Snow Hill Hotel is popular with the local crowd, and offers plenty of modestly priced Tibetan and Indo-Chinese dishes. It’s hidden away on the first floor of a green building in the Old Market—look for a small staircase leading up.
• Dragon serves up Chinese and Tibetan dishes, and is one of the few restaurants open “late” at night (after 8). Look for dark windows with a dragon design.

Sumos from Tawang leave from the Old Market street. There are travel agencies along the road that you can buy tickets from. Most Sumos leave early in the morning, around 5:30.

Either Bomdila or Dirang is a good stopover point during your journey to Tawang… unless you like 14 straight hours of bumpy driving! Bomdila town isn’t remarkable, but a peaceful and clean monastery overlooks it from above, and the monks are friendly and happy to chat and offer the occasional butter tea.

How to get to Bomdila

• 7-8 hours from Tezpur, Assam – Daily Sumo at 5:30 – 500 Rs
• 7-8 hours from Tawang – Daily Sumo at 5:30 – 500 Rs
• There are buses from Tezpur to Bomdila and Dirang, but they’re incredibly slow and can take a day or two. Sumos are recommended.

Where to stay in Bomdila

• Hotel Panchieng – 800 Rs for a basic double with private toilet – Two buildings down from Lungta Residency
• Lungta Residency – 1,250 for a double, run by a kindly Tibetan family – Conveniently located next to Sumo stand, beware it can fill up quickly
• Doe-Gu-Khil Guest House – 1,500 Rs for a double with toilet in a monastery-run guest house – Located just below Upper Gompa

Though the town is bland, Bomdila’s surroundings certainly aren’t!

Things to do in Bomdila

• Upper Gompa is the largest of the three (lower, middle, upper) in town, and commands good views of the town
• Eagle’s Nest Wildlife Sanctuary is a bit more than 20 km outside the town, and a good place for bird watching
• Apple orchards in Dirang Valley are worth a visit if you come during winter harvest season

Public service announcement: don’t be drawn in by this sign. The “wine” is freaking disgusting. Just buy the Old Monk, it’ll hurt less.

Where to eat in Bomdila

There’s a cluster of basic hotels around the Center Point area serving sweets, snacks, and fast food.

• Hotel Elegant is a small, cheap restaurant at the Center Point area. Don’t be put off if it seems empty—people eat in the back room.
• Lungta Residency has an attached restaurant/café, admittedly open at strange times of day (lunch only?)

Bomdila’s Sumo stand is outside the multi-level “shopping center” in the middle of town. You can buy tickets from the small booths on the backside of the basement.

Monpa, Sherdukpen, Miji, Bugun, Aka

After a quick departure from the flatlands of Assam into the hills and mountains of Arunachal, you’ll enter Itanagar, its rather unremarkable capital. We didn’t bother to stay for more than a day—we were ready to get back into nature!

How to get to Itanagar

• 9 hours from Bomdila – Daily Sumo at 9:30 – 600 Rs
• 4 hours from Ziro – Daily Sumos starting at 6:00 – 350 Rs
• 10.5 hours from Guwahati – Daily bus at 6:00 and 16:30 – 160 Rs
• See more bus times for transport to Itanagar on the APST website

Note:  Naharlagun is close to Itanagar, and also offers a variety of transport options. If you can’t find a way to Itanagar directly, Naharlagun is a good alternative.

Where to stay in Itanagar

• Hotel Blue Pine – 1,320 Rs for a double with private toilet, including taxes – Five minutes’ walk from the Sumo stand, near the backside of the bus stand
• There are a handful of other hotels near Blue Pine. We heard Pine Ridge Hotel is cheap, but can’t confirm that it accepts foreigners.

Things to do in Itanagar

• The gompa (monastery) at the top of the hill is all we know of.

Where to eat in Itanagar

• Darjeeling Restaurant across from Blue Pine hotel is popular with young locals, and serves up simple fried rice and momos.

The Itanagar Sumo stand, which offers services to virtually anywhere in Arunachal Pradesh, is close to the entrance of the APST bus stand. If heading out of the bus stand, turn left, and walk for a few minutes. You can’t miss it—there are a dozen little ticketing booths.

The lush greenery of Ziro has been attracting more tourists in recent years, thanks to the Ziro Music Festival putting it solidly on traveler’s maps. More imortantly, it’s home to the Apatani tribe, touted as the most advanced tribe in Arunachal thanks to their ingenious farming techniques (which earned them consideration for a UNESCO Cultural Heritage listing).

Being relatively flat, Ziro is an easy place to walk or cycle through the numerous small villages throughout, and a good place to relax in peace and quiet for a few days.

How to get to Ziro

Hapoli, AKA “Ziro”, is the larger part of town, while Old Ziro is several kilometers down the road. There are shuttle minibusses running between the two, though you’ll be hard-pressed to fit any luggage inside.

• 4 hours from Itanagar – Daily Sumos around 6:00 – 350 Rs
• 7 hours from Daporijo – Daily Sumos early in the morning – 500 Rs

• Arunachal Guest House – 1,500 Rs for a double in this well-located hilltop hotel – Old Ziro
• Ngunu Ziro Homestays – 1,000 Rs per person for a room and half board – Contact them via the Ngunu Ziro Facebook page or one of the phone numbers listed, as homestays quickly fill up in high season
• Blue Pine Hotel – 1,320 Rs for a spacious double with private toilet, from the same chain as in Itanagar – Atop a hill at the edge of Hapoli (New Ziro)
• Circuit house – Price unknown, but certainly offers the best views in all of Hapoli. Call ahead at 0378824255 to reserve a room.
• Hotel Valley View – 400 Rs for a basic single – Across from Hotel City View on M.G. Road
• We were told about Kagotaia Homestay (Kago village?) and Bullotatu  Homestay (Hong village), and that they’re cheaper at 300 Rs per person. However, we don’t know where they are, and couldn’t find them. Feel free to search for yourself by asking around.

Things to do in Ziro

• It’s best to just walk around in the villages surrounding Hapoli and Ziro. We found Hong and Bulla (Reru) to be the most quaint/traditional looking.
• Tayiñ Lañpii in the forest behind Bulla village (near the Saint Claret College) is a serene rock formation that served as a leper colony several decades ago. Never fear, no leprosy here!
• The Talle Valley trek is supposed to be insanely gorgeous, and leads to a wildlife sanctuary 32 km from Ziro. The trek takes 4 days in total, going through the Pangey Valley. You’ll need a guide for this one.
• Local guides can be arranged by the community tourism NGO Ngunu Ziro to show you around the area for 1,000 – 1,500 Rs per day.

Where to eat in Ziro

• There are numerous hole-in-the-wall restaurants along M.G. Road, near the corner with the State Bank of India ATM
• Alpine View Hotel on M.G. Road is the most popular with locals
• Gupta Sweets has the cheapest—and often freshest— parathas

Ah, Daporijo, our mistake turned excellent choice.

We ended up here after Ziro, thinking it was a logical stopping point en-route to Along… and it wasn’t. Transport to Along is scarce, as is transport to any major hubs. We arrived on Saturday, and learned the next bus to Along was on Tuesday . Oops.

Daporijo turned out to be a brilliant place to get stuck. The people in Daporijo don’t see many (if any) foreign visitors, and were over the moon to meet us, show us around, and, of course, take a million selfies. By far the friendliest people we met in Arunachal! The town itself, though not particularly photogenic, is set in a beautiful valley at the confluence of two rivers.

Butts beware: the road from Ziro to Daporijo is one of the bumpiest we drove in Arunachal.

How to get to Daporijo?

• 7 hours from Ziro – Daily Sumo at 5:30 and 9:30 – 500 Rs
• 6 – 7 hours from Along – Sumo on Wednesday, Friday, Sunday – 270 Rs

Where to stay in Daporijo

• Hotel Singhik  – 1700 Rs for a double is a bit expensive, but it’s the best value accommodation in Daporijo that accepts foreigners, aside from the Circuit house. Rooms are very clean, bathrooms are modern, and the service is good.
• Circuit house – Price is negotiable for a spacious double with private toilet, and an excellent hilltop view overlooking the city. Call ahead at 0379223223 to reserve.
• Hotel Toli – 1,500 Rs for a deluxe double with private toilet, which is overpriced in our opinion (but there are cheaper, smaller doubles). The really friendly owner and his family make up for it. He showed us around while we were in Daporijo – Located in Gandhi Market

Things to do in Daporijo

• Laila Manju , the convergence point of the two rivers, is the hangout place of choice for locals on sunny days. You can swim (though bikinis would be out of place here), and the shack at the head of the path down to the river sells cold beer. It’s said that the name came from two lovers who committed suicide here. We assure you, it’s not actually that morbid .
• Mengha Temple is a cave temple to Shiva hidden in the forest near Mengha village. Supposedly it was lost for decades, until “recently” rediscovered by a local woodcutter. It’s around 15 km out of town.
• Several picturesque hanging bridges span the Subansiri river along the way to Mengha Temple
• Supposedly you can go white water rafting somewhere in the region, though we didn’t see anyone try…

Where to eat in Daporijo

• Lots of little restaurants around the “main” street where Sumos drop you off
• Hotel Green View on the main street has passable budget-friendly food
• Hotel Singhik’s restaurant has decent Indian options and a bar, though they’re a bit more costly
• The Chinese/Tibetan restaurant beneath Hotel Toli offers decent chow and thukpa

• There are Sumo ticketing stands along both of the main streets through town. Pick your poison based on your destination.
• The APST bus stand offers buses to Itanagar, going through Basar and Pasighat, as well as Sumos to Along.

Sleepy Along, locally known as Aalo, is a small town you’ll need to stop in en-route to Mechuka. There’s not much in the way of sights, but the Siyom river running past the town is peaceful and scenic enough, and there are dozens of small villages amongst lush rice paddies surrounding the town.

How to get to Along

• 6 – 7 hours from Daporijo – Sumo at 5:30 on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday – 270 Rs
• 5 hours from Pasighat – Daily Sumos – 500 Rs
• 8 hours to Mechuka – Daily Sumos (book ahead) – 500 Rs

Beware:  The lone Sumo from Daporijo fills up quickly, so arrive before 5 to buy your ticket! A bank hired out the entire Sumo when we tried the first time (bastards), so we had to hire a private car with other people. It cost 750 Rs per person with 7 people, and took 9 hours…

Where to stay in Along

• Hotel Toshi Palace – 700 Rs for a basic but neat double with private toilet – Across from bus stand
• Hotel Mansons Plaza – 750 Rs for a standard Non AC double – Near Along airport

Things to do in Along

• Chill by the riverside. Men with boats occasionally pass by if you want to cross.
• There are several small villages with beautiful rice fields within walking distance of Along, such as Kumb
• A hanging bridge spans the river about 7km outside of town.

Where to eat in Along

• Nondescript C. T. Restaurant around the corner from the bus stand is popular with locals, is open until 20:00 or so, and serves decent momos, thukpa, and chow.
• Chakraboty Hotel on the way to the Market Sumo stand offers cheap and cheerful rice plates, among other basics.
• Hungry Hut serves food and drinks by the riverside. Find it by crossing the bridge out of town through the gate, turning right, then taking one of the eventual paths on your right to the waterfront.

There are a variety of places you can catch transport from Along.

• The APST government bus stand is across from Hotel Toshi. From there, you can catch buses to Itanagar, and the occasional Sumo to Mechuka (it seems they run every other day).
• There’s a line of ticketing booths and Sumo stands down the street from the APST stand. You can catch Sumos to Itanagar here.
• The last—and most populous— Sumo stand is in an area locals call “ market ”. If you’re heading away from the APST stand towards the ticketing booths, keep going, and take the first major left. Continue following the road as it hooks around to the right, and you’ll eventually run into more Sumo stands and ticketing booths after about 10 minutes’ walking. You can find multiple Sumos to Mechuka and other areas here in the early morning. Be sure to reserve tickets the day before!

Majestic Mechuka town is the closest we got to finding Shangri La in Arunachal. Its surroundings are spectacular—no matter what direction you look, you’ll face epic mountain vistas and snow-capped peaks. What more could you ask for? Hands-down our favorite destination of our time in Arunachal Pradesh.

Things to do in Mechuka

We spent our days just hiking around in the mountains. Trails leading into the hills are easy enough to spot—just pick a direction and start walking!

• New Gompa sits on a small hill overlooking the town. You can’t miss it. It’s a good area to watch the sun set.
• Old Gompa (Samten Yongta monastery)  sits atop a larger hill several kilometers outside of the main town. Look for a small building on a hill, it’s very visible. Walking there and back takes the better part of a day.
• There’s yet another gompa with a big Buddha statue in Darjeeling village, about 6 kilometers from Mechuka
• You can climb the Menchuka mountain for unparalleled views of the town. It’ll take a few hours to get to the top—it’s bigger than it looks!
• Mechuka Lake is a scenic alpine lake in the area. It takes three days to trek there and back.

Where to eat in Mechuka

• Homestays offer far more delicious food for breakfast and dinner than you can find on the street. Do partake! Our homestay charged 200 Rs per person for non-veg meals with plenty of refills 😉
• Lots of nondescript restaurants in Gandhi market, on the street that runs alongside the military airfield

A small town that makes for a good stopover point if you’re interested in taking the ferry along the Brahmaputra to Dibrugarh (Assam). The town is nondescript, but the surrounding mountains en-route are lovely.

Budget accommodation tip: The government-run Circuit Houses are often the best budget accommodation options in each town. However, any booking can be undone by a visiting government official, and they visit often—we know, as we were ousted every time we tried to stay in one! Call ahead to book when possible.

Religion in Arunachal Pradesh

Like the rest of India, Arunachal is a mixed bag of religions. The number of Buddhists grows as you move closer to the Tibetan border, while in the rest of Arunachal animistic nature worship falling under the umbrella of  Donyi Polo is more common. However, Christian missionaries are moving in with a vengeance in the region.

Opening times in Arunachal Pradesh

Thanks to the weird sunlight hours resulting from the singular Indian time zone, businesses open late and close early. If you’re eating out, know most restaurants will be closed before 19:30.

Arunachal Pradesh Tourism

You won’t encounter many foreign travelers in Arunachal Pradesh—the traveler scene is comprised mostly of Indian tour groups, if you see anyone at all. The local government wants to discourage foreign backpackers from tainting the local culture, apparently.

Foreigners in Arunachal Pradesh

Supposedly we are required to register at the District Superintendent of the Police in every place visited. In Tawang, they were very savvy about the requirement, whereas in Bomdila and Ziro… not so much. We grew lazy about registration after Ziro, and nothing came of it.

Try as we did, we couldn’t find any information about hiking routes in any of the places we visited. When we asked, people just kind of waved towards the hills, or gave vague statements about towns. You’ll need to hire a local guide if you’re interested in trekking. Arunachal Pradesh tour guides go for around 1,000 Rs/day.

There are 24 official tribes throughout Arunachal Pradesh. We’ve included the predominant tribe in each area (and some words in the local language, if we picked any up!), though there are usually multiple tribes represented in each area.

Arunachal is more liberal than other Indian states. You’ll see more girls out and about on the streets, many in shorts if weather permits. Plus, they’re not shy to talk. It’s refreshing!

Transportation in Arunachal Pradesh

Transportation in Arunachal Pradesh can be interesting. When planning your trip, be sure to add a few buffer days to your itinerary. There’s always a chance that something will go wrong, that there’s no transport available, that you’ll be late, etc. Some other things to note:

• Sumos (a Jeep-like vehicle) are the main mode of transport, thanks to the poorly maintained—or unfinished—roads.
• Officially, there can be 10 passengers per Sumo, with four people in each row. If you don’t like to squish, consider hiring a private vehicle.
• If your back/legs/soul can’t handle sitting on extremely bumpy roads for long periods of time, consider flying to your destinations where possible. The roads in Arunachal are poor… at best.
• Helicopter transport is available for select locations in Arunachal, such as Itanagar, Pasighat, and Tawang. The helicopter schedule is here .

Phone networks in Arunachal Pradesh

All the reports we read claimed BSNL was the only working provider in the state. Talk about outdated!

More popular providers are aggressively expanding into the state. We had H/4G mobile data with Airtel in all the places we visited, though connection was sometimes spotty. Locals in Daporijo said Vodafone is their favorite, and it did show up on our list of available providers in most locations.

Mechuka was the exception—nothing except BSNL works up there!

The northeastern most state of India, Arunachal Pradesh, is home to stunning natural scenery, immaculate valleys, and rich history. Travelling to Arunachal Pradesh is unquestionably worthwhile because you’ll get to see its rich history and culture, beautiful snow-capped mountains, serene lakes, and much more.

In this Arunachal Pradesh travel guide, we’ll cover everything you should know before visiting, such as travel permits, the best time to visit, recommended itinerary, places to stay, and things to see and do. So let’s get started!

Best Time to complete the Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary:

Arunachal Pradesh is best visited in April through May and October through November. The weather conditions are charming during these months, making your trip very restful.

Monsoon in Arunachal Pradesh ranges from June to September. It is the monsoon season when the landscape changes into beautiful green heaven, but visitor attractions may be closed due to heavy rainfall.

Permits required to complete the Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary:

It could be noticed that Arunachal Pradesh imparts its boundaries to China which is the essential justification for why entry to the state is not kept unmonitored for tourists.

There are two distinct permissions for Indian and Foreign Nationals to grant their travel in Arunachal Pradesh.

Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian residents.

Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Foreign Nationals.

How to get around Arunachal Pradesh?

To enter Arunachal Pradesh, first, you need to reach Guwahati in Assam and then travel to Murkongselek, a town at the Assam Arunachal boundary.

How to reach Guwahati?

Fly to the Airport in Guwahati.

Take a train to Guwahati.

It is advisable to show up in Guwahati in the early evening. So you can get a train to Murkongselek at Kamakhya Junction at 8:30 pm.

How to reach Murkongselek?

After arriving in Guwahati, head towards Kamakhya Junction, where you will find many trains to Murkongselek.

Or take a bus from the Guwahati bus stop to Murkongselek.

Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary:

Day 1: the journey begins, day 2: enter the west siang district, day 3: travel to mechuka, day 4: explore mechuka, day 5: yarlung camp, gurudwara & taposthan, day 6: dorjeeling village, day 7: to travel is to live.

Day 8: Explore Dambuk

Day 9: The Journey Ends

The journey to the “Land of the rising sun” begins in Murkongselek by road. From Murkongselek, we will go to the first town of Arunachal Pradesh named Pasighat.

Now onwards, our entire travel in Arunachal Pradesh will be by road in a car. You can use a Sumo transport service to travel over the state, as it is effectively accessible in every part of Arunachal Pradesh.

You will reach Pasighat from Murkongselek within 45 to 6o minutes. After arriving in Pasighat, find a place to stay for a night and start exploring the city.

What to do in Pasighat?

Explore the Pasighat Market: While walking on the street of Pasighat Market, you will encounter lots of different things that are elusive in other parts of India. Like dry fish, spices, dry rats, tadi(insect), bhootjalokia powder(spicy chili powder), tita baingan(bitter brinjal), pume, bamboo shoots, silkworms, and many more.

Relax on the banks of the Siang river: Siang/Dihang is a tributary river of the Brahmaputra, which flows through Tibet, China, India, and Bangladesh.

Visit the hanging bridge of Panging: The 395-meter-long hanging bridge is built across the Siang River and is considered the longest suspension bridge in Arunachal Pradesh.

After breakfast, leave Pasighat and head towards Aalo. The confluence of the rivers Sipu and Yomgo lies at Along/Aalo. People of the Galo tribe and some parts of the Adi tribe inhabit the town of Aalo.

The whole drive from Pasighat to Aalo will be of about 4 hours. The long drive will be worth the journey when you witness the beauty of the city.

Due to the odyssey, you may not get to explore many things in Aalo. But you can do the following activities if you have plenty of time.

Aalo River Rafting: River rafting is the primary activity in Aalo, done on Sipu and Yomgo rivers.

Visit Ramakrishna Ashram: Devoted to Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, this ashram has an attractive, well-maintained school.

Walk on the paddy fields or explore the market.

Next morning brace for your road trip to Mechuka. As you travel up two or three thousand feet, you may witness how the air and landscape change decisively with level.

Following a decent 5 hours of travel, you will arrive in Mechuka, the beautiful valley in the West Siang district.

Here find a place to stay and wait for the moon to pass the sky to explore the beautiful town.

What to do in Mechuka?

Mechuka La hike: You can climb the Menchuka La mountain for unrivaled views. It will require a couple of hours to get to the top.

Yarlung Army Camp: You can visit the Yarlung Camp and meet the brave hearts who have been protecting our country.

Lord Hanuman temple: As you travel towards Yarlung Army Camp, you can stop at a small Hanuman temple, across from where you can find a naturally carved face of Lord Hanuman on a rugged mountain cliff.

Gurdwara and Taposthan: There is a Gurdwara maintained by the Indian army and a sacred cave that is dedicated to Guru Nanak Ji on the way to Yarlung Army Camp.

 Dorjeeling Village: This small beautiful village is situated approx 5 km from Mechuka town and has scenic mountain views.

It is impossible to enjoy all these things in one day, so we will stay in Mechuka for the next three days to do these things.

On our first day in Majestic Mechuka, we will climb the epic mountain Mechuka La. It will take a few hours to get to the top of the cliff. You can take some food with you and enjoy it on the top by watching the gorgeous view of Mechuka and the surroundings of snow-capped peaks. The total hike duration may lie between 4 to 6 hours, depending on how quickly you complete it.

Spend the rest of the day interacting with the local peoples of Mechuka and learning new things about the area. You will find that the majority of the individuals belong to the Memba tribe and a Tibeto-mongloid ethnic group that follows Buddhism.

On the next day in Mechuka, we will brace towards the Yarlung Army Camp. It is the final point before the Indo-china border where civilians are permitted to enter without any special permission. Here you can meet the Indian army and hear brave stories about them.

Note: Taking photos and shooting videos is restricted in the area.

On the back way from Yarlung camp, we can stop at a small Hanuman temple. Here you can find the naturally carved face of Lord Hanuman on a rugged mountain cliff.

Thenceforth, drive to the Gurudwara to pay your regards. This Gurudwara has a prayer hall, Langar, and a museum. It was established and managed by an Indian army to commemorate the visit of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his journey to Tibet between 1516-1517.

Across the Gurudwara, there is a Guru Nanak Taposthan known to have impressions of Guru Nanak Ji. To enter Taposthan, you need to pass through a narrow passage in the mountain that opens into an enchanting forest by the riverside. And there is a myth that if you are a sinner, you will fail to pass the passage. After spending some time at the riverside hearing the peaceful stem of the river, head back to your stay in Mechuka.

Located crossing the Yargepchu River is the Dorjeeling Village, which has scenic mountain views. It will roughly take 20 to 30 minutes to reach Dorjeeling from Mechuka. Truthfully, it is not a tourist destination. However, it has various picturesque scenes with hanging bridges and a small Monastery.

Travel from Mechuka to Dorjeeling village

Here we will end our Mechuka tour and set back to Aalo. After reaching Aalo, have a good sleep because the next day is the travel day.

Get up early, and get ready for a long travel to Dambuk. From Aalo head towards Pasighat. Rest here for a while, and again buckle up to travel to Dambuk.

The drive from Pasighat to Dambuk is the most adventurous, as we will be not driving on the road but across a dry river bed. The total drive time from Aalo to Damuk would be of 6 hours.

Dambuk is almost at the end of east India, the sun usually sets down between 4:30 to 5 pm. So you have no option other than finding a nice place to stay.

The Perfect 5-day Itinerary for Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh welcomes you with some of the most significant Buddhist monasteries, immense natural beauty and a relaxed pace of life. If you’re looking to escape the humdrum of city life and want to spend a few peaceful days exploring the untouched beauty of India, this is where you need to go.

Fly down to Lilabari Airport in Assam or take a train to Harmuti Train Station, Assam as these are the nearest from Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh’s capital. Once you reach Assam, hire a taxi or get onto a bus taking you to the beautiful state of Arunachal. The Lilabari Airport is 70 kilometres and Harmuti Train Station is 36 kilometres away from Itanagar.

History buffs delight as today you will visit the state’s most important historical sight, the Ita Fort, from which the capital gets its name. Dating back to the 14th century, the fort is perched on the top of a hill and offers gorgeous views of the valley beneath. Literally translating into a fort of bricks, it has three main entrances to the West, East and South.

The Craft Centre & Emporium at Itanagar is next on your list and is a great place to admire and buy local arts and crafts. You will find traditional costumes, paintings, sculptures, handicrafts and more such local delights here.

For lunch, head to Zero Point for a variety of Indian cuisine or to Poong Nest to try the local delicacies of Arunachal Pradesh.

Late in the afternoon, leave for Bomdila, which is about eight hours (270 kilometres) by road.

Begin your day with a visit to the Bomdila Monastery belonging to the Mahayana Buddhism sect. Among the most popular tourist attractions in Arunachal Pradesh, this monastery also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Spend your afternoon in one of the apple orchards in Bombila. Take a stroll through the fields, pluck fresh apples off the farm and buy some for your home before leaving. Winter is the best time to visit the fields and capture pretty orchard views, blooming with apples.

In the evening, head to Bomdila View Point, a must visit for nature lovers and solace seekers. It is the highest point in the city and offers incredible views of the Himalayas that will stay with you for a long time to come. The best views of Nechipu Pass can also be captured from here. Witnessing the sunset here is a great idea and is also known for unparalleled views of the mighty mountains.

Nature lovers can head to RR Hill early in the morning to capture a mesmerising sunrise and uninterrupted views of the roads leading to Bhutan.

A great way to spend your morning will be opting for a safari at Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary. Covering an area of approximately 220 square kilometres, it is home to a waterfall flowing into the Kameng River. Don’t forget to carry your camera along as the sanctuary is the habitat of many exotic varieties of flora, fauna and birds. Birds like Eagles, Hornbills, Kingfishers and more, and animals such as the majestic Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephant, Langur, Black Bear and Red Panda can be spotted here.

Reserve your evening for a visit to the Bomdila market to soak in the local flavour. While you are here, dig in to a delicious plate of momos, thukpa, soups and noodles made in the traditional manner.

Leave for Tawang early in the morning today as the journey will take you at least six hours (170 kilometres). On your way, stop at the offbeat Nuranang Waterfalls, about 100 metres high. The waterfalls are one of the most precious hidden gems of the Northeast, situated at an elevation of around 6000 feet. They further plunge into the Tawang River and make for one of the most photogenic spots here too.

Tawang town lies 25 kilometres ahead of the Nuranang Waterfalls, so it will be late evening by the time you reach.

End your day with a fulfilling meal at Dragon Restaurant located in Tawang’s Old Market. The best of local cuisine can be tried here along with a cup of Tibetan yak-butter tea.

After breakfast, head to the Tawang War Memorial to pay your respect to the brave who fought in the 1962 Indo-Sino War. An important landmark in the Indian history, the memorial is a must visit when in Arunachal Pradesh.

Next on your list is the biggest attraction of Tawang, the Tawang monastery, home to the iconic Giant Buddha Statue. The monastery is the largest in India and the golden statue is 26 feet tall.

Alternatively, you can also visit the famous pilgrimage site Taktsang Gompa. Literally translating into Tiger’s Den, this place of worship is located at an altitude of 13000 feet. The crisp invigorating mountain air and the peaceful environs of this Gompa make it the ideal place to meditate for a while.

If time allows, you can also head out to explore the picturesque Madhuri Lake. April to September is the best time to visit the lake as it remains frozen the rest of the year. A hot cup of tea and Maggi as you enjoy the lake views makes for a perfect day out with your loved ones.

For those interested in culture, the Tibetan Settlement Market is a great place to spend your evening at. Also known as Vihara Market, it is home to various kiosks and small shops selling souvenirs, traditional handicrafts and local food items.

The market is also home to a number of shops selling prayer wheels, flags, Lord Buddha statues, wall hangings, paintings and more for you to take as souvenirs for friends back home.
