2024 ISLE OF MAN TT RACES

27th May – 8th June

‘TOURIST TROPHY’: OUT NOW

‘Tourist Trophy’, the feature-length documentary film covering the 2022 Isle of Man TT Races, is out now and available to stream for FREE on TT+

Directed by accomplished documentary maker, Adam Kaleta, the film is an authentic, true-to-life portrayal of the 2022 TT Races, following several of the event’s leading competitors as they navigate the highs and lows of racing on the Mountain Course.

The film follows several of the leading protagonists who competed at the 2022 event and allows us to better rationalise the TT mind-set through the authentic portrayal of each rider’s TT story.

There’s the determination of Mike Russell as he strives to compete in every race; the highly-anticipated newcomer, Glenn Irwin, who finds his meticulous preparation is challenged by the two-week emotional rollercoaster; and his legendary team-mate, John McGuinness MBE, whose 100th TT race start leads to some searching questions for the 50-year-old. We also follow the journey of the record-breaking sidecar constructors, Tom and Ben Birchall, while no film about today’s TT would be complete without Peter Hickman, the fastest rider ever around the TT Mountain Course – and arguably the man of the moment.

‘Tourist Trophy’ is available to stream exclusively on TT+, the event’s free-to-register digital platform.

LIMITED-TIME OFFER

The film’s release will also coincide with the launch of the 2023 TT+ Live Pass . With an expanded ten-race programme in 2023 , the TT+ Live Pass continues to represent incredible value for money, delivering 11 days of edge-of-your-seat live coverage to your favourite screen or device via the TT+ digital platform.

To celebrate the release of ‘Tourist Trophy’, advance purchasers of the 2023 TT+ Live Pass can take advantage of our limited-time offer and secure theirs for the same 2022 price of £14.99 .

Tourist Trophy

Tourist Trophy is the application of Gran Turismo 4 ' s formula and engine to a motorcycle racing game. Even with reduced on-screen vehicle count and loss of certain tracks (including off-road courses, even with inclusion of motard models), the track features the Circuit Ricardo Tormo that would be given one chance for four-wheelers to drive in , as well as a 1080i support carried over from the game's four-wheeler cousin.

Cheat Codes

Most of the previously undiscovered cheats for Gran Turismo 4 also work in this game. These codes have same requirement as in GT4, in which 365 game days must have passed.

  • Pass any license (License Selection Screen): Select, R1, Select, R1, Select, L2, L2, R2, R2, L1, Select, L1, Select .
  • Gold any specific license test (License Test Selection Screen): Select, Select, R1, R2, L2, L2, Select, L1, R1, Select, R2, L1, Select .
  • Gold any event (Event Course Selection Screen): Select, L1, Up, Up, Select, R1, Down, Down, Select, L2, Select, R2, Select .

Special Settings

The hidden menu that was in GT4 can also be accessed in this game using the same method: enter the Options menu and input the same code, L1, Up, L2, Down, R1, Left, R2, Right, Start, Start on the second controller. The sound heard when entering a menu from the main menu will then be played to confirm the right input. Unlike in GT4, the code does not need to be entered each time the player visits the screen.

In addition to the Secret and Monitor , two additional options also appear here to support the Secret portion of the menu.

Function Overview

Secret (special settings).

This portion of the menu works exactly the same like in GT4, although with some changes as TT does not have Favorites option in its Arcade Mode.

  • Specific Bikes : Restricts the motorcycles available in Arcade Mode to those defined in the Bike menu.
  • Specific Courses : Restricts the courses available in Arcade Mode to those set in Course Registration Settings , which is a hidden setting in this game as TT does not feature LAN mode.
  • Specific Opponents : Restricts the opponent motorcycles chosen in Arcade Mode to those defined in the Bike menu.
  • Specific Makes : Allows the game to be set to only feature a certain manufacturer. When this is the case, you cannot enter Tourist Trophy Mode , and the title screen's is modified with the chosen manufacturer on top of the game logo on the title screen. Selecting none , the default option, reverts to normal gameplay.

Monitor (Detail Monitor Settings)

This portion of the menu also works exactly the same like in GT4, where it allows you to adjust the camera and the display of the screen during races.

  • Flag : Four flags can be chosen (FLAG_NONE, FLAG_ROTY, FLAG ROTX, and FLAG_ROTX|FLAG_ROTY). These appears to deal with settings on each horizontal/vertical axis, but it does not appear to affect anything.
  • Zoom : Adjust the field of view, in range of 0.00 to 3.00.
  • Distance : Adjusts the distance from the viewpoint of the player's camera between 200 to 1200 millimeters; the default setting is 276 mm.
  • Width : Adjusts the width of the display area, between 200 to 600 millimeters.
  • Height : Adjusts the height of the display area, between 200 to 400 millimeters.
  • Aspect : Adjusts the pixel aspect ratio, between 0.00 to 2.00.
  • Overscan Factor : Obvious what it adjusts, the value is 0.00 to 2.00.
  • Border Width (Left, Right, Top, Bottom) : Adjusts the width of each side of the screen border in millimeters. The range of each is 0 (default) to 300 millimeters.

The default settings depends on the selected aspect ratio mode:

Bike (Bike Settings)

A replacement for the Favorites option in GT4, where chosen cars are determined, this menu allows the player to select what motorcycles are available to be used by the Secret Settings menu.

Course Registration Settings

This menu, originally part of GT4's LAN capabilities, allows you to select what tracks can be chosen for the Specific Courses option. Note that most of the tracks have the value for maximum vehicles on the track of six, even though Tourist Trophy only supports four.

Unused Motorcycle

An entry for Buell LIGHTNING CITYX XB9SX RacingModify '05 can be found in the database files in the American version of the game, which would have been a racing version of the Buell LIGHTNING CITYX XB9SX '05 , a motorcycle added in that version of the game. Coincidentally, the other three road-going bikes added in that version do have their own racing versions. In the European version of the game, this entry was removed from the database.

Unused Thumbnail

Tourist Trophy Honda RC162 '61 Thumbnail.png

There is an Arcade Mode thumbnail for the Honda RC162 '61 , a bike not normally accessible in that mode.

Regional Differences

The American version of the game adds seven additional motorcycles to the game:

  • Buell LIGHTNING CITYX XB9SX '05
  • Honda NS400R '85
  • Honda NS400R RacingModify '85
  • Suzuki RG500 Gamma '85
  • Suzuki RG500 Gamma RacingModify '85
  • Yamaha RZV500R '84
  • Yamaha RZV500R RacingModify '84

The European version of the game also adds three additional motorcycles, on top of the above:

  • Kawasaki Z1000 R1 '82
  • Kawasaki Z1000 S1 '82
  • YOSHIMURA GS1000R YOSHIMURA XR69 '80

For the North American and European version of the game, the new Buell became obtainable from the 2-stroke Legend Series championship (in Hero Blue Translucid color) and the third race of the Nostalgic Festival series (at Special Stage Route 5 , for the Kick Ash Translucid color); these events originally do not award prize bikes in the Japanese version. Additionally, for the European version of the game, two events have their prize vehicles changed to accommodate that version's new ones:

Because of the changes to the K1200R Cup and Special Machine Cup, the Suzuki DR-Z400SM '05 and Yamaha VMAX RacingModify '05 are obtainable from the first two races of the Nostalgic Festival event in the European version instead.

Bike Changes

Some motorcycles have performance changes in the North American and European version of the game, where they use the "eu" variants:

Riding Gear

The North American version version adds the following Riding Gears:

The European version also adds three helmets to the above list. Curiously, entries for Arai SNC RX-7 RR4 NAKANO-1 and Arai SNC RX-7 RR4 NAKANO-2 are present in American version of the game, unused with different names.

Equipment Combination

Some Equipment Combinations in Arcade Mode were changed between Japan and International versions:

In addition, an extra motard Equipment Combination was added in North American and European version. It takes the tenth spot of the Japanese version, moving by one all of the other following combinations.

Seven new in-race songs were added in the North American version of the game, followed by additional six in the European version of the game.

Tourist Trophy review: Tourist Trophy

Tourist Trophy is (almost) the Gran Turismo of the motorcycle kingdom. That's no surprise really because it's also made by the crew at Polyphony Digital.

It's been the better part of a decade since the original Gran Turismo redefined racing on consoles, but Polyphony Digital has finally moved into the realm of two-wheeled racing with Tourist Trophy. The game maintains the compulsive drive for authenticity that the Gran Turismo series is known for, but with a much narrower focus. So while it may just be Gran Turismo with motorcycles, it's still a great racing game in its own right.

tourist trophy youtube

Tourist Trophy

The bottom line.

tourist trophy youtube

There are a tonne of motorcycles to choose from, and they all look and sound great

There are more than 120 motorcycles to ride in Tourist Trophy. The selection of bikes is very Japan-centric, with Hondas, Yamahas, and Suzukis making up the vast majority of the roster. There are a few bikes from BMW, Ducati, and Triumph as well, but the selection is limited in that regard. The motorcycles range from lightweight 125cc two-strokes to heavy 1,000cc-plus bikes. The variety is somewhat limited by the fact that you'll often see multiple versions of the same model of bike.

Regardless of how similar the bikes may be, they all have a distinct look, sound, and feel. The detail on the bikes matches what you've come to expect from Polyphony Digital, with everything from the gas tank to the oil pan being accurately detailed for each and every motorcycle. The only fault is that the over-the-handlebars view is pretty ugly. Each bike has a distinct display in this view, but the handlebars and rearview mirrors have a blurry, pasted-on look. All in all, though, the game looks great, and if you're a motorcycle enthusiast, you'll enjoy watching the replays of the races almost as much as you'll enjoy racing.

The bikes in Tourist Trophy are just as satisfying to ride as they are to look at. Each motorcycle handles differently, requiring you to adjust your riding style depending on the bike you're riding. The heavy bikes are great for speed but can be tough to stay on top of in tight turns. The lighter bikes are quick and nimble but don't have the power to keep up in the straight sections. Everything from the way a bike starts to shake as you hit speeds of 300km/h or more to the sound of wind rushing past your helmet as you top out in a straightaway makes you feel like you're teetering between a record-setting lap and a pelvis-shattering spill across the pavement. However, the crashes are the weakest part of the riding experience. In a standard race, if you really mess up and smash straight into a wall, you'll be slapped with a 10-second penalty, but most of the time when you take a spill you'll be instantly placed back on the track, sometimes even ahead of where you wiped out. You might lose a second or two as you get back up to speed, but it hardly seems like much of a penalty for a crash that would seemingly cost you the race, if not more.

Tourist Trophy is composed of two main modes: arcade and Tourist Trophy. Arcade mode is the place to go if you're just looking for a timed run, a quick race against up to three computer-controlled opponents, or a two-player split-screen race. Tourist Trophy mode is the equivalent of a career mode, where you start out by earning a licence and then work your way through various racing events and challenges to access new bikes and more challenges. It's similar to Gran Turismo mode in concept, but with some significant differences.

tourist trophy youtube

There's no money in Tourist Trophy mode, which means you don't have to repeat the same race 20 times to save up for that bike you've had your eye on

For one, there's no money in Tourist Trophy mode. You earn new bikes not by amassing wealth, but by winning challenges and race events. There are dozens of challenges to choose from, but they are locked according to the licences you've completed. The licence tests are extremely easy, though, so you might as well finish them all first thing to get them out of the way. Each challenge corresponds to a specific motorcycle, which you win by completing that challenge. The challenges are all pretty much the same, requiring you to overtake an opponent after starting at a disadvantage and then maintain the lead for 10 seconds or cross the finish line, whichever comes first. Some of the challenges can be completed in less than 30 seconds, but others can be quite difficult, especially because you're disqualified if you leave the track, wreck, or cause your opponents to wreck. Since these challenges are all available as soon as you complete the licence tests, you can conceivably pack your garage with a couple of dozen bikes after just a few hours of playing.

The best bikes are awarded for completing race events. There are 22 race events to start out with, but you can unlock several more by winning championship events. The events are all themed, and most are restricted to specific types of bikes. There are events designed around specific bike models, eras, and sizes. Most of the events are single, three-lap races where you're awarded for each individual race. There are also a handful of championship events where points are awarded for each race and the person with the most points at the end of the series is the champion. Most of the events aren't punishingly difficult, and they're short enough that they can be completed (or repeated, if necessary) relatively quickly.

The second major difference between Tourist Trophy and Gran Turismo is in the vehicle customisation. In Tourist Trophy you can tune your motorcycles by adjusting the gear ratio, brakes, shocks, tyre compound, and exhaust. But the tuning is extremely basic and is nowhere near as involved as in Gran Turismo. With that said, the tuning does make a big difference in how each bike handles, so it still pays to tweak your bike settings before each race. There are also no part upgrades in Tourist Trophy, so if your bike is underpowered, it will stay that way. All in all, the bike customisation leaves a lot to be desired in Tourist Trophy.

Oddly enough, the rider customisation is surprisingly robust. You can win all sorts of licensed riding gear from manufacturers such as Alpine Star, Shoei, and Arai. You can also customise your riding style to suit your needs. You can adjust everything from head roll to body lean, and the riding style you choose can make a big difference in how you're able to handle turns.

You'll see quite a variety of turns as well. Some are fast and exhilarating, while others demand hard braking and precise timing. There are more than 30 courses in all, although some of those courses are simply alternate arrangements of the same race track. The courses all look great, and there's plenty of variety to challenge every facet of your racing skills. The only problem is that all but one of the courses are recycled from the Gran Turismo games, so it will feel like well-worn territory if you've played those games. It's still a very different experience on two wheels, though, and all the courses feel well suited to motorcycle racing.

tourist trophy youtube

You've seen these courses before, but not from this perspective

In fact, the challenge comes almost entirely from the course, rather than from the competition. The artificial intelligence in the game is very mechanical. The opponents you face will occasionally take corners a bit slower than necessary, but you'll almost never see them take a corner wide and dump their bikes in the gravel or oversteer and take a spill coming out of a turn. The result is a race that feels more like a time trial than a heated sprint for the finish line. The biggest component of victory is the bike you choose to ride. If you're on an underpowered bike, you won't stand much of a chance of catching up, no matter how good you are. But, if you have a fast bike, you can easily compensate for sloppy cornering with quick acceleration and a high top speed.

Tourist Trophy feels very familiar, but at the same time it doesn't just feel like motorcycles were forced into a Gran Turismo game. The motorcycles all look and handle great, and there are plenty of events, challenges, and courses to keep you coming back for more. If you're even slightly interested in the world of motorcycles, you'll find a lot to enjoy in Tourist Trophy.

Fort Lauderdale rain not bothering tourists, city officials say they are prepared

By Anna McAllister

Updated on: June 11, 2024 / 6:46 PM EDT / CBS Miami

MIAMI - Fort Lauderdale residents woke up Tuesday to soggy conditions in what is to be a week of storms , but tourists are taking the wet weather in stride and city officials tell CBS News Miami they are prepared.

Tourist Greg Hejna is not letting bad weather rain on his parade.

"You know - it's just part of life," Hejna said.

Hejna and his family are visiting from Chicago. This isn't the way they anticipated spending their vacation, but Hejna says he plans to keep exploring despite the weather.

"Whenever I go someplace, I enjoy being out and about and just looking at the local life and getting a flavor for what's going on. So. to me, it doesn't bother me,"

The weather is not bothering visitors from Texas, either.

Tourist Cindy Tamblyn said, "A little water never hurt anybody. So, we're just making the best of it."

Wanda Cox, another tourist, said, "Rain or shine, we party on it."

According to Fort Lauderdale officials, the city is expecting 8 inches of rain from Tuesday through Friday, with two inches expected to fall each day.

Dr. Nancy Gassman, who works in the sustainability division of the public works department, says the city is ready.

"We've been maintaining our systems, making sure that critical areas are clear and doing the kinds of repairs that we need to do to ensure that the system is working well," said Gassman.

So far, city officials say the call center isn't experiencing an increase in calls from residents and that city services are operating normally.
