How to download YouTube videos using Safari or Firefox

If you’ve spent more than a couple of hours on the Web you understand that the thing is choked with videos—from YouTube to Vimeo to news and entertainment sites. There’s so much, in fact, that it’s hard to watch everything you want to when you’re sitting down in front of your computer. And because there is, it’s not uncommon to seek ways to capture that video for later viewing on other devices or when an Internet connection isn’t available.

Capturing Web video can be a one- or multi-step process, depending on how the original content is encoded and protected. For example, it’s fairly easy to download MPEG-4-encoded content and play those videos on your Mac and iOS devices because MPEG-4 is natively supported on these devices. However, many websites continue to offer videos encoded in the Flash (flv) format. While you can play these videos in a browser or with a third-party application such as the VideoLAN client (or in QuickTime Player if you’ve installed the Perian plug-in ), you must convert these to a format compatible with iOS devices. Easy or difficult, it’s possible to capture just about any video on the Web. Let’s explore how.

Downloading files with a Web browser

If you’re using Safari you’ll find that there’s no obvious command for capturing streaming YouTube videos, but it can be done with the browser’s built-in tools provided that you’re downloading a Flash file. For example, navigate to a YouTube video you want to capture and start it playing. Press Command-Option-A to produce Safari’s Activity window. In this window you’ll see the name of the video followed by the word YouTube . In the list of links below look for an entry of several megabytes that appears to be loading. Option-double-click on it and it will download to your Mac as an flv file. As mentioned earlier, you can then play this file with a third-party tool. Unfortunately, you can’t download MPEG-4 files using this method. For those files, turn to Firefox or a third-party tool.

Speaking of Firefox, its users have a better option thanks to the free DownloadHelper extension . Once you’ve installed the extension, a DownloadHelper icon appears in Firefox’s address bar at the top of the browser window, or in the status bar at the bottom of the browser window (we found different behavior on different Macs). Start playing a video and click on the icon and you’ll see one or more listings for the video. If you’re looking at a YouTube video (the extension supports downloads from many different sites) you’ll see multiple listings—some in Flash format and others in MPEG-4 format. Choose one of the MPEG-4 versions (standard or high definition, for example) and it downloads to your Mac, ready to play in iTunes, QuickTime Player, or another video player of your choosing. If a site offers only one version of the video—MPEG-4 or Flash—you’ll see the option to download only that file.

If that file is in the MPEG-4 format, you’re set. Just download and play it. However, if it’s a Flash file you may wish to convert it so you can play it in iTunes and on your iOS devices. DownloadHelper can do that but only if you’ve installed the FFMpeg or Mencoder libraries—a process that requires some knowledge of the Terminal application and the wherewithal to track down the correct library builds. Otherwise, there are many tools to convert your videos.

Third-party tools

Regrettably, not all websites provide video in MPEG-4 format. If you want to view downloaded flv files with an application that doesn’t support Flash, or watch them on your iOS device, you must convert them. There are a variety of ways to go about this.

But first a word on how to not go about it. If you search the Web for video conversion tools, you’ll find many of them. Most aren’t worth your while. These are poorly-built applications produced by companies that promote these tools via spam and fake reviews. Worse yet, some of them cost upwards of $40, which is far too much to pay when there are some perfectly fine tools that do the job for free.

One of those free tools is Video Monkey (   ), an application that borrows heavily from the beloved-but-now-discontinued VisualHub . Once you’ve downloaded a movie using one of the methods described earlier, just launch Video Monkey, drop your movie into its window, and choose the output device or video format you want to use. Video Monkey offers batch conversion and includes a quality slider. It can also add your converted movies to iTunes when it completes its work.

Shedworx’s free Smart Converter (Mac App Store link) is another good choice. It too can convert flv videos as well as audio files. Just drop your videos into the Smart Converter window, choose a preset (Apple TV, iPad, or iPhone/iPod, to name a few), and click Convert. The free version of Smart Converter doesn’t support batch processing however. If you want that, turn to the $10 Smart Converter Pro (Mac App Store link).

Although $15 isn’t free, it’s not terribly expensive either. If you’d prefer to capture and convert in one step, take a look at TastyApps’ Videobox . To use Videobox, just drag the URL for a video you want to download into the Videobox window. A mini-browser window appears that includes the contents of the page the video is posted on, and an entry for the video appears in Videobox’s window. Click on the Download icon and a Save As window appears. From the Output For pop-up menu, choose the format you’d like to save the video in—iDVD/iMovie, iPad, iPod Classic, iPod touch/iPhone, or Mac Viewing are some of the choices—and click the Save button. (Click the Show Settings button in this window and you can further adjust the video settings.) Videobox downloads and then converts the video.

Brute force

And then there’s the ugly way—using a screen capture utility to grab video and audio in real time. You can do this with QuickTime Player by choosing File -> New Screen Recording, but you won’t be able to capture the video’s audio until you install Cycling ’74’s free Soundflower. To do that, download and install Soundflower, open the Sound system preference, and choose Soundflower (2-ch) in the Output tab. Within QuickTime’s Screen Recording window, click on the triangle and under the Microphone heading choose Soundflower (2ch). Start the recording and then start the video playing.

The results from a QuickTime Player capture can be choppy, even on a fast Mac. In such cases, you may want to turn to a dedicated screen capture application such as Ambrosia Software’s $69 Snapz Pro X , Shinywhitebox’s $30 iShowU HD Pro, TechSmith’s $99 Camtasia 2 or Telestream’s $99 ScreenFlow 3 (   ).

Downloading YouTube Videos in macOS

When I reviewed the video player IINA (see “ Prepare for Apple Dropping Old Media Formats with the IINA Video Player ,” 6 May 2019), quite a few TidBITS readers took it as an opportunity to vent their frustrations about downloading videos from YouTube. Recent changes in Firefox have broken extensions like DownThemAll , which used to be a handy way to download videos.

There are several reasons you might want to download videos from YouTube. Like most cloud-based things, YouTube videos are ephemeral—they vanish all the time for all kinds of reasons. The uploader might pull a video down, YouTube may remove a video in response to a copyright complaint (sometimes legitimate, sometimes not), and a video might disappear if it runs afoul of YouTube’s ever-changing and seemingly haphazard standards for acceptable content.

But preservation isn’t the only reason people download YouTube videos. For example, they may want to download short clips to use in their videos (honoring the doctrine of fair use, of course). A friend of mine accidentally deleted the “sizzle clip” he slaps on the front of every video in iMovie, and he solved the problem by downloading one of his own videos from YouTube and extracting that clip. Or, you may want to be able to play some YouTube videos in a situation where there’s no Internet access.

Whatever the reason, you don’t have to rely on Firefox to download videos from YouTube. There are several solutions on the Mac, and I review a few of them here.

Note that downloading YouTube videos with a utility other than YouTube’s apps (which require a YouTube Premium subscription) nominally violates YouTube’s terms of service :

You shall not download any Content unless you see a “download” or similar link displayed by YouTube on the Service for that Content. You shall not copy, reproduce, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, or otherwise exploit any Content for any other purposes without the prior written consent of YouTube or the respective licensors of the Content. YouTube and its licensors reserve all rights not expressly granted in and to the Service and the Content.

That said, I’ve never heard of YouTube punishing a user for downloading videos, although using copyrighted material in videos you upload to YouTube could get you in trouble.

The Command-Line Grand Poobah: youtube-dl

Arguably, the greatest of the YouTube downloaders is the public-domain youtube-dl , a command-line utility that powers many apps like the aforementioned IINA. It’s not the friendliest option, but it’s free and powerful.

The project offers instructions for installing youtube-dl . You can use the curl command or rely on Homebrew , a command-line package manager that I strongly recommend—refer to Homebrew’s home page for a one-line command to install it from Terminal. Then, in Terminal, you can enter brew install youtube-dl to install the download utility.

Once you install youtube-dl, type man youtube-dl in Terminal to see its extensive list of options. But all you really need to do to use it is to type youtube-dl URL in Terminal, where URL is the link to the desired YouTube video. That downloads the video in your current directory. Type cd ~/Downloads before running youtube-dl to download the video to your Downloads folder.

You can play the video after you download it with QuickTime or with a third-party player like IINA or VLC .

The developers of youtube-dl issue updates frequently, which is why I recommend installing it with Homebrew. The first time I tried to download a video for this article, I received an error because I hadn’t updated youtube-dl first. Homebrew makes updating easy with the brew update youtube-dl command, which updates both youtube-dl and Homebrew itself, along with all the packages youtube-dl needs to function.

A Free Graphical App: ClipGrab

ClipGrab is a simple, free utility for macOS that can download individual YouTube videos and even convert them to other formats, including MP3 if you’re only interested in the audio.

It’s easy to use: copy a YouTube URL and open ClipGrab. It will automatically extract the URL from the clipboard. Use the Format drop-down menu to choose a format (Original is usually fine if you want video), and click Grab This Clip to download the video. The default download location is your Desktop, but you can change it in the Settings tab.

ClipGrab offers a search tab where you can search for and download videos, but I find it easier to use YouTube’s search engine to find videos and then paste the URL into ClipGrab.

A Setapp Option: Downie

A subscription to Setapp includes several utilities that can download YouTube videos: the torrent client Folx , media players Movist Pro  and Elmedia Player , and an app purpose-built for downloading YouTube videos: Downie . (If you’re not a Setapp subscriber, Downie costs $19.99.)

Downie, unlike ClipGrab, is tailor-made for the Mac. You can drag and drop YouTube URLs to Downie’s window or its Dock icon. Downie also comes bundled with a Safari extension, which you enable in Safari > Preferences > Extensions. Once you enable the extension, you can click the Downie icon in Safari’s toolbar to download a video.

In addition to Downie’s simplicity, I like that it downloads subtitles with the video (YouTube automatically generates subtitles for videos). Downie saves subtitles alongside the video as an SRT file. Unfortunately, QuickTime Player doesn’t understand those files, so you need to use a more capable video player like IINA to view them. As long as the SRT file is in the same directory as the video, it works automatically when you play the video in IINA.

Downie can also download an entire YouTube playlist at once. Just drag the playlist URL into Downie and click Playlist to see all the available videos to download. You can then click Add Selected to download the playlist videos.

Download an Entire Channel with 4K Video Downloader

Downie can download an entire playlist, but there’s only one Mac app that I know of that can download an entire YouTube channel: 4K Video Downloader . You can try the app for free (it costs $15 to unlock the entire app). To use it, copy the channel’s URL, open 4K Video Downloader, and click Paste Link to load every video in the channel.

Even better, when 4K Downloader is running, you can subscribe to a channel to download every new video published on the channel automatically.

Note that if a channel has a lot of videos, it can take a long time to download them all and it may use considerable system resources to do so. Nonetheless, I’ve successfully downloaded entire channels containing hundreds of videos with 4K Video Downloader, making it my favorite utility of the bunch.

4K Video Download can also download subtitles, and it can convert YouTube videos to MP3 audio files. Of course, it downloads individual videos as well.

I’ve been using “VIdeo Download Helper” with Firefox, and later, with Chrome. Unfortunately, it seems that much content I’m interested in saving locally (even if just temporarily), is no longer in the form of a complete, quickly downloadable media file. Lately finding things being fed in streaming formats, which sequentially send little <100kB chunks. Even if the “helper” app could consolidate those, you’re basically doing a “real-time” recording, much as if you were using a screen capture app. Have not checked to see if any of the suggested apps can get around this.

I suppose if you have a need to buy the $100 app for some other reason, you could use ScreenFlow to capture them live and have editing/export capabilities afterwards.

You could also use the screen capture features of Mojave. Command-Shift-5, draw a box around the video, choose Record Selected Portion, and click Capture.

Josh, you haven’t noticed MediaHuman app, it has a lot more features and best of all you can subscribe to playlist updates, not only channels.

I’ve been using 4K Video Downloader for a few years now, and love that I can feed it a track or playlist URL and leave it running in background while I do other stuff, until it pings to let me know it’s finished. I then have Hazel pick up the MP3 files and import them into iTunes.

We were able to download a video as you described, but Quicktime is grayed out when we try to use it to open it. It opens fine with Firefox, but not Quicktime. We used Homebrew to download it.

Are we missing something?

It’s possible that the original is in a format QuickTime can’t read. Try a third-party video player like IINA or VLC, or download it with a utility that lets you change the format to MP4.

I’ve been using JDownloader for more years than I can remember to download Youtube videos. It’s cross-platform, free, multilingual, updated frequently, and offers excellent support. It can also download many other types of media and files. For Youtube, it has the ability to download both playlists and channels, either in their original resolution or one of the user’s choosing. It can also download only the audio track, the cover image, and/or the description text. It can be found at http://jdownloader.org/home/index .

I copy the video URL in Safari, open new network source in VLC, paste the URL, open the VLC Media Information window, copy the info in the Location field and finally paste that into Downloads in Safari.

It’s possible that YouTube will bring its iPad app to the Mac when Catalina ships.

youtube-dl is my favourite, and if you use the curl command you are up and running in 2 minutes sudo curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl I use youtube-dl -f mp4 when I want to be able to play it on iPad and iPhone. I would not bother with Homebrew except if I needed other packages.

I use iTube Studio regularly to grab videos for my volunteer class just in case the wi-fi isn’t working that day. Works great.

I use “Download Video” tool from Parallels Toolbox. https://youtu.be/KPuxBVWts_Q Love all the helpful stuff it does for me and they just keep adding more utility as time goes on.

I use Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate. Oké, it may not be free but you get what you pay for. I often use it to download just the sound from a video. It can do both equally easily. As well as being able to convert from umpteen formats to umpteen formats. Hassle free and reliable. Excellent Aimersoft support.

There has been an audio track on YT that I’ve wanted for sometime but it had been so difficult to get JUST the audio but the suggestion of “ClipGrab” made it so easy. Basically poof! I’ve got it! So thanks a lot!

If you have an MP4 video (from YouTube or elsewhere), you can easily extract the audio with QuickTime Player. In the File menu, choose Export As > Audio Only :

I’ve had success using the free web site Clip Converter . There’s a filter to block attempts to download copyright content (especially music videos), but I suspect that filter is needed to avoid DMCA takedowns and other related legal problems.

I’m glad you like it! It’s the best way I know of to download an entire YouTube channel without resorting to youtube-dl (which is awesome, but I don’t always have the patience to figure out its options).

Yes, it’s really nicely designed and works well. I can’t remember when I found it, but I’ve been using it for quite a while, and was happy enough that I paid for it.

Adam mentioned ViDL above, and it essentially puts a nice Mac front-end on youtube-dl (and allows you to update the underlying youtube-dl as needed). However, it seems to download videos at a lower resolution than the maximum and I can’t see a way to change this behaviour. Overall, 4K Video Downloader still seems better and allows you to select the download quality you want, up to the maximum available.

I recommend you to use DumpMedia Video Downloader , it has online and offline versions, I use the online tool all the time, save time and space, but you can use the offline tool to download in batch, means you can download the whole playlist at one go.

Here I’d also like to add 2Conv and Joyoshare Screen Recorder as alternatives that missing from the list. 2Conv is a free and online tool to download YouTube videos to MP3, MP4 and AVI. Joyoshare Screen Recorder is more like a recorder, which is able to record and save videos from different sites like YouTube, Vimeo, Hulu, etc. in 1080p without watermark and latency. I usually use it to record a specific part of a live concert on YouTube that lasts for hours. Maybe you could consider them in your future updates.

If you get the error: “ERROR: Unable to extract uploader id” when using youtube-dl switch to yt-dlp.

The easy way to download and install is with these commands in Terminal:

yt-dlp is awesome. It’s much more reliable than youtube-dl. I’ve used it many times to grab playlists or even entire channels. Choose your own options… but these work well for me:

yt-dlp --continue --no-overwrites --ignore-errors --download-archive downloaded.txt --format “bestvideo[ext=mp4]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/bestvideo+bestaudio/best” --merge-output-format mp4 --output “%(title)s [%(id)s].mp4” {video, playlist or channel url goes here}

That will grab the desired content, skip any that were already in the same directory, make a list of download id’s in download.txt, and save the files as mp4.

I had not thought about the possibility to grab playlists. Thanks for the tip. I was just happy that the simple command:

still works just like with youtube-dl.

yt-dlp is still awesome… but things have changed over at Youtube. They are now using vp09 format inside mp4 containers, which Quicktime will not play. So we need a new incantation:

yt-dlp --continue --no-overwrites --ignore-errors --download-archive downloaded.txt --format “bestvideo[ext=mp4][vcodec^=avc]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/best[ext=mp4]/best” --merge-output-format mp4 --output “%(title)s [%(id)s].mp4” {video, playlist or channel url goes here}

All that has changed is that we now specify a different codec to grab.

I’ve used Downie for several years now, with no hassles or problems. It is well worth the purchase price; it’s well designed, usually really easy to use, and, most importantly, the developer updates it regularly and responds quickly to user questions.

Worth a look is VideoPro Converter. It’s often available in Bundlehunt style packages for about 3 bucks. Also RIPs DVDs, converts between formats, screen records etc.

yt-dlp also can download a video from a website that requires you to login with a username and password or requires browser cookies. Search for “cookies-from-browser” in both the ReadMe and the FAQ.

I even used it to download a video that had been uploaded to Google Drive with permissions allowing viewing but not downloading. In that case, yt-dlp pretends to view the video at 2X speed (without displaying anything on your screen) as it downloads it.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s easy to download videos on iPhone and iPad using Safari. In this tutorial, we will show you how to save video files locally to your iPhone Camera Roll and the Files app for offline viewing.

What videos can you download on iPhone?

In almost all chat apps like Messages, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc., you can download the videos people send you and view them inside that messaging app or export them to your iPhone’s Photos app.

Social apps

3) After you tap the video download icon on a website in Safari, you should see an iOS pop-up menu with two options – View and Download . Tap Download , and it will save the file. You’ll notice that the Safari address bar now has a tiny arrow icon with a circular blue progress bar signifying the download status.

4) Tap Safari’s  arrow icon and pick Downloads  to get to the download manager, which lists the downloaded files. These files are saved in a folder inside the Files app .

Drag & drop: Tap and hold the video file, and its tile will slightly lift. Drag it a bit from its original position to detach it, but don’t lift your finger yet. Now, swipe up (or press the Home button) using your other hand to get to your iPhone Home Screen. From here, open the Photos app and make sure you’re inside Recents or an album. Finally, drop the video file by lifting your finger. You’ll see that the video is now added to the Photos app.

Another method to save a video file using Safari on iOS

As mentioned earlier, not all websites offer a download button. But for a video, you will see a play button, and tapping it starts playing the video inside Safari. So, if you find yourself on such a website, play the video and then follow these steps:

1) On the Safari video player, tap the Picture in Picture button , which will detach the video and put it inside a small floating window. It won’t work if you tap the Picture in Picture button directly on the web page video player, like that on Vimeo.

2) Tap the share button from the video player screen.

3) Pick Save to Files > select iCloud or On My iPhone > Save .

Don’t see the share button in step 2?

In the left screenshot, you see a video playing/streaming on a web page. And in the right image, you see a video file starting to play inside the default Safari media player.

If a video is embedded on the website, it generally plays on that same web page (left image above) and doesn’t launch the video player inside Safari. If this is the case, you won’t be able to download the video unless you look for third-party sites that can save such videos. For example, tapping a video on Twitter starts playing it in the browser and you can’t download it directly from Safari, but you can use a site like Twitter Video Downloader in Safari , which will grab the Twitter video, play it in Safari video player (right image above) and let you save the file.

On some sites, tapping the triangle play button over the video may start playing it on the webpage, making it impossible to download. Hopefully, you can address this by looking for a View , Download , or Play button, which loads the actual video file and starts playing it inside the Safari video player. Once the file is in the Safari video player, enter Picture in Picture, and tap the share button > Save to Files.

Find downloaded files on an iPhone or iPad

You will find the downloaded video in the following places:

Inside Safari: Tap the downloads button in the URL bar, hit Downloads , and you’ll see the video file.

In the Camera Roll: Open the Photos app and tap Recents from the Albums tab.

In the Files app: Open the Files app and tap Recents to see the video. You can also tap Browse and look for the video in the downloads folder. From the Files app, tap & hold a video thumbnail and then choose Share > Save Video to add it to the Photos app.

1. Addoncrop YouTube Video Downloader

Addoncrop YouTube Video Downloader is a feature-rich browser extension that you can use to download YouTube videos . You’ll have to download Addoncrop through Foxified, an extension that lets you add Firefox add-ons to Chrome.

After downloading this extension, you’ll see an additional bar just below the YouTube video, displaying various buttons. Using the video icon , you can download any YouTube video. Before beginning to download, the extension asks you to choose the resolution, displaying the file size for each resolution.

However, before downloading any video, make sure you understand if it's legal to download a YouTube video and whether you're complying with its terms and conditions.

Using Addoncrop, you can also convert the video into MP3 file and download the thumbnail. Further, there are options to enable dark mode, cinema mode, or floating video player.

However, if all this makes your screen too cluttered, you can click on the cross icon to switch to compact mode. This displays a single Download button only.

You can change the settings of this extension from the extension settings. From here, you can choose which formats to display for downloading, whether to include DASH format items, and whether to show the option to download on embedded videos.

Besides downloading videos, Addoncrop’s extension offers several useful features. It allows you to take a screenshot of videos by clicking on the Camera icon. You can also hide YouTube comments.

If you’re listening to music or a podcast, you can turn on Audio mode and prevent the video from loading. Perhaps the handiest feature is that you can search YouTube while watching a video. The search results appear Related Videos tab.

How to Install Addoncrop’s Downloader

Visit the Addoncrop website and go to YouTube Video Downloader Page. Click on Add to Chrome and then Let's Go . This will redirect you to Chrome Web Store, from where you'll have to first download Foxified.

Once Foxified has been downloaded, you'll see a new tab asking for permissions for YouTube Video Downloader. Allow the necessary permissions and YouTube Video Downloader will be ready in a few seconds.

2. Internet Download Manager

Internet Download Manager, or IDM, is a widely used tool for downloading different types of files, not just videos. Although you can download the IDM extension from the Chrome Web Store, it works only if the IDM software is installed on your computer. So, you’ll have to download the software along with the extension. Once you’ve done both, restart your browser.

To download the videos from YouTube, open any video on YouTube. You’ll notice a Download This Video button with the IDM logo in the top-right corner of the video player. Click on it and choose the file format and video resolution.

Next, IDM will show a dialog box asking you to choose the folder for saving video and description (optional). Lastly, click the Start Download button, and IDM saves the video in the specified folder.

While IDM Integration Module extension itself is free, you'll have to purchase an IDM license to use the software after the free 30-day trial period. The license costs $11.95 per year and $24.95 for lifetime access. IDM is one of the best download managers for Chrome , so it's giving it a try.

Local YouTube Downloader is a tool that does exactly what it says on the tin, it lets you download YouTube videos locally to your device. However, this extension isn't downloadable through the Chrome Web Store, you have to install it through Tampermonkey.

Tampermonkey is a well-known user script manager that’s available for all popular browsers, including Chrome and Edge. Through this user script manager, you can download user scripts for downloading YouTube videos through it.

After doing downloading Tampermonkey and Local YouTube Downloader, you just need to open any YouTube video you want to download. Below the video player, click on Download High-Resolution MP4 to instantly download the video.

For more resolutions and formats, click on Show/hide links . Here you’ll see multiple links in two different columns: Stream and Adaptive . Links in the Stream column have audio-video combined, while links on the right support only one of them.

Choose the resolution and format of your video and click on its link. You’ll be taken to a new tab with the video playing. Here, you can right-click and click on Save Video As to download videos.

One of these scripts, called Local YouTube Downloader, can (as its name suggests) download YouTube videos in Chrome, without redirecting you to another site. It also works in Edge and Firefox, if you install Tampermonkey in those browsers.

Here we’ll explain how to use Tampermonkey to download YouTube videos in Chrome. After that, we'll explain how to properly use a website that offers similar features. But first, we'll look at the legal side of downloading to ensure you don't land yourself in trouble.

Is downloading YouTube videos legal? What you need to know 

YouTube states in its Terms of Service that you’re not allowed to download any content, unless “specifically permitted by the Service,” or have prior written permission from YouTube or the respective rights holder. 

You can download videos through the YouTube app for Android and iOS by paying $11.99 per month for YouTube Premium , but to prevent piracy and copyright infringement, this option isn’t offered on the YouTube website.

Video downloaders aren’t illegal, but making copies of copyrighted content is. At the very least, your YouTube account could be terminated if you repeatedly violate the site's terms of service, and you may even face legal action. 

However, there’s lots of content on YouTube that is permissible to download, such as public domain videos that aren't copyrighted, clips covered by a Creative Commons license , and homemade videos that friends and family have shared with you (and have permitted you to download). 

Make sure you’re sensible about what you download, and definitely don’t redistribute videos from YouTube without permission.

How to download YouTube videos in Chrome: Install Local YouTube Downloader 

Although you won’t find YouTube video downloaders in the Chrome Web Store, you will find the Tampermonkey extension, which lets you install Local YouTube Downloader. Here’s how to set it up. 

1. Open the Chrome Web Store and search for “TamperMonkey” or go straight to the Tampermonkey Chrome extension page. Click "Add to Chrome" in the top-right corner.

2. Click "Add extension" to install Tampermonkey . For easy access, you can pin the add-on to Chrome’s toolbar. Click the Extensions button (the one that looks like a jigsaw piece) and select the ‘“Pin” option next to Tampermonkey .

3. The Tampermonkey website will open in a new tab and tell you the extension has been successfully installed .  

You should now head to a userscripts site called Greasy Fork , where you’ll find the Local YouTube Downloader script . Click the “Install this script” button . 

4. This will take you to Local YouTube Downloader’s page on the Tampermonkey website. Click the Install button here to add the script to Tampermonkey . 

5. To check that the script installed correctly, click the Tampermonkey extension button and choose Dashboard . Here you should see Local YouTube Downloader listed as “Enabled." 

How to download YouTube videos in Chrome: Download a YouTube video 

Now that you’ve installed Local YouTube Downloader, it’s time to put it to the test with an uncopyrighted video, or one you have permission to download. 

Here’s how to use the script to download videos from YouTube directly in Chrome, or by using Tampermonkey in another browser.  

1. Visit the YouTube website in Chrome and find a video that's free of copyright or which you have permission to download. 

You can filter your search results to show only videos with a Creative Commons license. Click the Filters button at the top of the page and choose Creative Commons .

Click to play the video as usual. 

2. If you have an ad blocker installed, you’ll be prompted to copy a new “rule” to it , so the Local YouTube Downloader script can work. If you don’t know how to do this - or can’t be bothered - just disable your ad blocker instead. 

3. Once your ad blocker, or lack of ad blocker, allows the script to run, you should see a new option below the YouTube video player labelled “Download high resolution MP4 in one click.”

Click this and Local YouTube Downloader will convert the video to a hi-res MP4 file , and let you download it to your PC or Mac . Note that the script may not work on videos of more than 1080p resolution. 

4. To save the video at a different resolution and in a different format, click Show/Hide Links . This will open a range of download options, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. 

5. Click one of the Stream options on the left (we found those on the right didn’t capture audio) and the adjusted video player will open in a new Chrome tab. 

Right-click the video and choose "Save video as" to download it to your computer. 

How to download YouTube videos in Chrome: Use a YouTube downloader website (carefully)

What if, say, the above all sounds too complicated? Well, then, there's the wide and wild world of websites you can open in Chrome that let you download from YouTube. 

Notorious for being filled with pop-ups, these sites can still let you download a YouTube video in Chrome. And if you're smart about how you use them, clicking your cursor like Indiana Jones avoiding traps, you should be OK.

The site we've tested today is yt5s.com . Unfortunately, you may have to deal with a pop-up overlay menu. This doesn't always happen. Click the Close button, then close the new window that just popped up. 

1. Paste the address of the YouTube video in question into the URL field 

2. Hover your cursor over Start until the color changes (it may go 'dark' as seen here), and click Start. This is how you avoid a pop-up. Try scrolling up and down or closing a pop-over if your cursor doesn't change the button's color.

3. If 720p isn't high-res enough, you'll want to click this menu. If it is good enough, click Get link to get to downloading!

4. Select a video quality option , here, I'm going with 1080p. 

5. Click Get link.

6. Click Download.

Your video will download!

(see image - now stuck like this for 10 minutes). (p.s.
