Today Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures announced they are bringing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan back to the big screen in a two-day event this September. The film  which many consider to the best of the Trek franchise will be presented in a digitally remastered Director’s Cut and, as an added bonus, William Shatner will appear in a newly produced in-depth interview that will play before each screening.

BREAKING! When @fathomevents re-releases #StarTrek II on 9/10 & 9/13, it will be preceded by my exclusive interview w/ @WilliamShatner !! pic.twitter.com/b8G9xMYwOm — Scott Mantz (@MovieMantz) August 10, 2017

Wrath of Khan star William Shatner said in the press release:

Making Star Trek II seems like only yesterday. Even back then, we knew we were creating something really special, and to have The Wrath of Khan back on the big screen 35 years later is a wonderful testament both to the film itself and to the incredible passion of Star Trek fans.

To hold you over, here is the trailer for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan director’s cut released last year.

What about CANADA???

Canada? If it comes to Canada i want it also here in Slovenia! You ask where is Slovenia? When you get to the moon turn right and then another 1 million miles and you are there.

It’s a lot warmer in Slovenia though.

In my little corner of Canada it’s been scorching the last little while. Finally cooled off today. Our temps can swing 80 degrees Celsius between Winter and Summer!

Yes the temp svings are demanding, two weaks a go we had like 63 F and now 98-100. I must add its wery humide right now. But who cares we got a new Star Trek shiw comming 😉😆

Yes today we have like 37 °C. 98 °F. Hove do you know? Google or are you somewhere close?

Yes, why are this events always limited to the USA. We want to watch too (and we would pay for it, with real money).

I think just the Giacommo orcestra thing had a Europe ture, but it was like London and Germany i think.

It’s a country in the northern part of North America, comprised of ten provinces and three territories, which extends from the Atlantic in the East to the Pacific in the West and northward into the arctic ocean, covering 9.98 square kilometres; its capital is Ottawa and its largest metropolitan areas are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

What about it?

I’m detecting a little Zucker brothers comedy there…

Don’t call them little.

A friend of myne was living in Toronto for 3 years. I think Canada is a wery cool county. I love to watch Gold Rush 😉.

You people are getting to far left and weird up there, you don’t deserve it.

Cant disagree with you there. If our Prime Minister reviewed Wrath, he’d certainly side with Khan and demand to know how Kirk could be such a jerk. And what did those scientists do or say to Khan to make him kill them.

Actually Trudeau and Bob Orci would get along great.

Hmmmm. That’s damn peculiar timing …

Back when Star Trek was just, you know, Star Trek.

A violent revenge story was Star Trek? Okay….

Apparently, people were a lot more shakespearean back then.

You might be right.

Oh, a director’s cut? Does the “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan director’s cut released last year” differ in any way from the “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan director’s cut I have on my shelf since 2006 or so”? Or is it just the same cut released in higher resolution?

Yes. Most noticeably, Kirk’s comment,”That young man down there, he’s my son” and Spock’s “Fascinating” reply are not included.

What the heck is this??

Star Trek is not about big space battles and vengeance (what kind of stupid tag line is that???). This is a bastardization of Space Seed, a thoughtful critique of contemporary social problems. They’ve turned a wonderful and subtle performance from Ricardo Montalban into a big bad super villain.

We’d heard behind-the-scenes they were getting rid of Gene Roddenberry and this just confirms it. There was a Starlog interview that said Gene didn’t like what they were doing with it, and I agree! Nicholas Meyer is trying to turn Star Trek into Star Wars!!! “Nu Trek” for the 80s? NO THANKS!

And the computer graphics look awful. BARF.

You know a Star Trek fan is seriously hard to please when they hate ‘The Wrath of Khan’.

I enjoyed TWOK; it was a really good movie considering how little time they had to make it and how much the budget was slashed. And as for Roddenberry, by that point he was incapable of liking anything written by anyone other than himself and had long ceased to be a viable producer.

All that said, part of me always regrets that they had to take the hopeful, optimistic ending to Space Seed (classic TOS at its best) and drown it to be able to make this movie exist.

Very little humor taking the content extremEly seriously, with respect to canon making very little mistakes (chekov) due to Bennett and Co. Actually going back and watching every episode of the original series so they can try their best to get it right. Intelligent themes layered throughout the movie with tense serious space combat that has intelligence behind it pitting superior intelligence against experience with intelligent themes (the human ego, the danger of pride).

All of this handled intelligently and seriously.

Kirk is not running around with micky mouse hands and it is not a brainless action movie like Abrams’ trek with no respect to canon or the viewer’s intelligence. And they do not use Trek as a resume so they can take over Star Wars.

Yup. You even have anal fans nitpicking Khan/Chekov and steadfastly claiming we saw every second of Khan and he could not have met Chekov.

Like get over it already.

LOL, but so true!

Wow, you’re in the minority.

sorry you feel that way. TWOK is not only my favorite Star Trek, but my favorite movie.

Computer graphics? Dude those are models and they look superb. I didn’t see this movie back in 82 because I wasn’t born yet, but just saw it twice in theaters and those shots look better then CGI, in my opinion although CGI is improving, The Orville looks fantastic. Anyway, Nicholas Meyer put Trek back on the map, love his style – sorry but I feel you’re alone on this, Trek fans love this film and the rest of them maybe besides 5.

hope there’s a release in Ireland

Fifteen minutes from my house. Yes!! I am IN.

Can i craah your coutch for a weekend? 😉

All are welcome. Just have to explain to my wife who all the strange people wearing Spock ears are in the house. :)

Have I overlooked it or why arent reporting on the planned “Khan” TV mini-series other sites are speculating about? I know, it’s far from a done deal, but if this is the project Nick Meyer has been working on, it would definitely be a great addition to Trek lore if done right.

I’m pretty sure they’re not reporting because it’s just an insane rumor from a less-than-reliable source at this point. (With a less-than-helpful tweet from Nicholas Meyer about it.) If the Trekmovie staff had confirmation of such a show, they’d post about it as soon as possible.

And I disagree, I think a “Khan in exile” miniseries would be a phenomenal waste of time in every possible way, no matter how well done. There is nothing interesting in that story, just another bit of treading narrative water instead of moving the story forward.

I wouldnt mind a report that says there is NO credible information. Surely they have sources.

I think aftr SDCC and Las Vegas they have thair hands full. I have a youtube channel and cower Star Trek, i’m a little owerwhelmed (i have no idea if i wrot it the right way) by all the information, i could do 20 videos, but i’m mot shure if it’s worth repeating after the Trekyads guys cowered a lot.

A Kelvin universe miniseries with Khan as an antihero working undercover for Starfleet could be pretty awesome if Cumberbatch could be persuaded… ;)

Gods, please, no.

I’d rather they retcon Cumberbatch to be Joaquin – perhaps the sleeping crew of the Botany Bay operate under some sort of “Khan Imperative” – whichever of the adult males is awoken first by foreign parties ( perhaps awoken abruptly, or under suspicious circumtances ) is preprogammed during cryo-sleep to awaken believing he is Khan. Meanwhile the True Khan stays protected, in cryosleep.

Don’t hold your breath.

I’d be there for that one!

Kinda like suggesting that a Harry Mudd series as a corrupt Federation trade liaison to the Orion Syndicate is something people want to see. No, it’s not. I’ll pass.

Because hopefully it isn’t true. It just sounds like a lame idea. And didn’t they have a comic book series that covered that? I remembered reading some of it back in the 80s.

It is a shame the UK does not do things like this. I know hollywood is american but the UK love films just like the US too.

They did do one for Alien tied in with Covenant release at the start of the summer, there would easily be the same fan interest for TWOK if not more I think

I have mixed feelings about this film to this day. It’s wonderful for what it is, but what it is ain’t exactly Star Trek . (Before you jump–that’s not just my opinion, or Gene Roddenberry’s; Nick Meyer basically admitted the same thing in his fine memoir of his time with the Trek franchise, “A View From the Bridge.”

It’s also a real shame that by structuring so many of the Trek movies around KHAN’s villain-out-for-revenge plot, subsequent writers and producers obviously took the wrong lesson from the film’s critical and box-office success.

Ha, that press release. Top on my list of things I’m sure never came out of Shatner’s mouth.

Well, I do remember prior to TWOK’s release Shatner enthusing “All the problems with the previous film have been corrected.” Yes, and some overcorrected.

For all of Gene Roddenberry’s criticism’s & problems with films from “Star Trek II” to “Star Trek 6000”, did he ever leave a quote regarding “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”. Did he think it was a great film ? While Gene’s genius was in putting together the team he assembled so wisely, it baffles me how he could not see what made the show so popular. I guess that’s something he and Bill Shatner have in common. I mention this as I saw a recent comment that he was angry when he had been away from the show for awhile and saw that Gene Coon had produced shows heavy on humor like “A Piece of the Action” and “The Trouble with Tribbles”. In my opinion, the humor and humanity of “Star Trek” is what set it apart from other genre series and tv shows of that era, in general. The humorless and anti-conflict storytelling of “ST:TMP” essentially neutered that film. Yes, the subsequent films did for the most part go with a hero vs. villain plotline..except for the near perfect “Star Trek IV” which truly represented “Star Trek” at its best. All in my humble opinion of course.

I don’t think Roddenberry had a problem with humor per se, but he did want the show to take itself seriously. History has rendered its judgement on the two shows you cite, but his disdain for what happened to “I, Mudd” was right on the money.

If you look at THE CAGE and the first several shows, the humor is limited and mostly awkward; it really only started arising out of character (in a good way) when Coon came on. I’ve only seen a few LIEUTENANTs but didn’t see a good feel for humor there either, so I don’t know that GR and humor is a good fit, or ever was a good fit. He probably didn’t appreciate how well the character humor worked under Coon, because already that wasn’t ‘his’ trek.

The humor that IS in TMP is from the other writer, not GR, I’m pretty sure of that. It’s a little too sophisticated for GR, and even so, there’s still not quite enough, but for the last 30 years or so, I’ve been rewatching TMP more than any of the others (TWOK & TFF are distant 2nds and 3rds, and the others I don’t usually even watch all the way through, just do the highlight-thing.) Even the awful parts of TMP are fascinating, especially when you know the background of the thing. Rewatching TMP for me is almost like being in the nexus – you watch it enough, you think you can go back and fix just about everything and turn it into a terrific movie instead of a fascinating misfire.

I love the music of TMP…but the actors look much older in their new uni’s and the few character moments there are in the film seem so forced and unnatural. Compare that to “Star Trek II”, where Shatner, Nimoy and the rest look younger even though they are acknowledging the aging process. ST:TMP is a lot like STV:TFF, Goldsmith’s music makes it seem so much better than it really is.

“If you look at THE CAGE and the first several shows, the humor is limited and mostly awkward; it really only started arising out of character (in a good way) when Coon came on. I’ve only seen a few LIEUTENANTs but didn’t see a good feel for humor there either, so I don’t know that GR and humor is a good fit, or ever was a good fit. He probably didn’t appreciate how well the character humor worked under Coon, because already that wasn’t ‘his’ trek.”

Respectfully, I can’t really agree with any of this. I don’t find the humor in “The Cage” any more awkward than most other television produced in that period, and in fact the scene in “The Menagerie” where Spock has a reluctant McCoy “arrest” him is one of my favorite humorous scenes in the franchise. “The Corbomite Maneuver” is full of genuine wit and drama that were apparently absent in script prior to Roddenberry’s rewrite. “Shore Leave” is very funny by first season standards, and it (including the character of Finnegan, who was a much nastier and less charming piece of work in Sturgeon’s original draft) was a page-one rewrite by Roddenberry.

He was clearly wrong about “The Trouble With Tribbles” and “A Piece of the Action,” but I can understand his protective attitude towards a show that was, after all, marketed to the SF community as the first serious, adult-level space opera produced for television. (Bob Justman was wrong about “Tribbles” as well, but no one seems to pillory him for it.) And he was right about the sequel to “Mudd’s Women” going completely off the rails. I have some guilty affection for “Mudd’s Women” (which also had some decent laughs), but “I, Mudd”–mostly a Coon re-write–is an embarrassing farce.

That said, I do agree with you that Coon handled humor better. But then, he was just a better writer.

…..I Mudd is not one of the better episodes but I would say its far from the worst. It has Roger C Carmel and the twins and Harry Mudd’s 1st wife…There are some good moments to it which is more than can be said for the great majority of the 3rd season…so this one is disappointing but at least it tried to have some original ideas.

Not to mention Trek Remastered (which is how most people will see it these days) added a ringed planet, so there’s that. But it’s mostly a time-wasting clunker, even with RC, Stella, and the hot twins. I can’t agree with you that it’s better than most shows in the third season. I think it would actually fit in pretty comfortably there, sad to say.

Serio-comic or even pure comedy work just fine for Trek, but farce? Ugh.

Speaking of Trek Remastered, I think I’m investing in some of the old DVD’s from about 10 years ago, so I can watch “Star Trek”, the original classic, without the abrasive soloist singing the theme. I want to preserve the “Star Trek” I remember.

Nothing wrong with the soloist maybe, but they definitely mixed her in way too high. Trek Remastered was a mixed bag, for sure.

Wonderful news! (If only I lived in the USA and not on some small outppst called Britain) YOu guys have fun if you can book it..

The $64,000 question for me is, will this be a 250 Mbit/s 4K or 2K DCP (digital cinema package) played from a hard drive sent to theaters, or a comparatively low-bitrate satellite broadcast? If the former, then it will look great and be shown on the theater’s high-end 2K/4K cinema projector. If the latter, it will look inferior to the commercially available Blu-ray and will almost certainly be shown on the theater’s 1080p advertising projector.

If Fathom never clarifies one way or another, then we should assume that it is not a DCP but instead being streamed over their live digital broadcast network. Fathom *has* shown DCPs before. Their 40th Anniversary presentation of JAWS in 2015 was a DCP. I’m crossing my fingers.

Why just Digital? Lets blow the thing up to IMAX size. Now, THAT would be something to see.

They need to go back to TMP: DE and upscale the reworked FX and maybe do a double feature special event..in IMAX. That I’d pay $$ to see.

Probably the 4K UHD HDR transfer Meyer supervised last year but Paramount has so far refused to release as a 4k UHD retail disc due to low sales on the Kelvin 4K UHD discs.

CANNNNN! ..anda??

Bummer, not outside the USA. what would it take to do a release in U.K. and Ireland like they did for the original Alien this summer?

Hey! What about Canada? I mean, Mr Shatner = Canadian, James Doohan = Canadian, Canada has Star Trek coins and Star Trek postage stamps… plus I AM CANADIAN! C’mon, don’t tell me I need to drive 3,000 km (Sorry – I mean, 1,800 miles – sorry) to see this film in a theatre! (Sorry, sorry – you folks spell it ‘theater’, don’t you. Sorry sorry.)

‘wrath of khan’ returning to theaters for 35th anniversary.

star trek wrath of khan in theaters

Wrath of Khan to be shown in theaters this September

In honor of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ‘s 35th anniversary, Fathom Events is showing the film on the big screen on September 10 and 13 .

UPDATE : The 35th-anniversary screenings will be accompanied by a newly produced, in-depth interview with William Shatner that will play before prior to the film. The interview will be hosted by Access Hollywood critic (and mega Trekkie)  Scott Mantz .

The film is presumably the extended director’s cut released in June 2016, as Fathom Events is showing the version with a running time of 130 minutes, compared to the original’s 113-minute runtime. Check out Treknews.net’s glowing review of the director’s cut if you haven’t seen that version yet. We said this classic Star Trek movie “has never looked better.” The film first hit theaters in the U.S. on June 4, 1982.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – The Director’s Cut on Blu-ray is on sale at Amazon .

Tickets are now available at Fathom Events website .

Stay tuned to TrekNews.net for more on The Wrath of Khan ‘s 35th anniversary.

You Can Finally Stream All the Star Trek Movies in One Place

Surely, the best of times.

LOS ANGELES - JUNE 4: William Shatner as Admiral James T. Kirk in the movie, "Star Trek II: The Wrat...

Most science fiction movie franchises that get past six films are fairly impressive. Way back before the MCU blew up in 2012 or the Star Wars sequels began in 2015, sci-fi film franchises generally didn’t get into the double-digits. In fact, the seemingly immortal Planet of the Apes franchise just now released its 10th film overall. Star Wars has 11 theatrical films, but five of those all came out in the last nine years. This summer, the Alien franchise will release its ninth film in very fragmented continuity, which funnily enough, has the subtitle Romulus , a term that was arguably popularized by the scrappiest science fiction franchise of them all — Star Trek .

While it's tempting to think of Star Trek as primarily a TV sci-fi empire (there are 11 distinct shows, with a 12th in production) the fact is, as a film franchise, Star Trek is not only massive but also extremely durable. And as of right now, every single Star Trek movie — from 1979 to 2016 — are all streaming on Paramount+. Here’s why even someone with a casual interest in science fiction or Star Trek should binge these movies ASAP.

In 1979, a TV series getting turned into a major motion picture was not common. Before Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the best examples of TV shows having feature film versions were the 1954 Dragnet and the 1966 Adam West-led Batman . What made Star Trek: The Motion Picture significant is that not only was it a TV series-turned-movie, but it was also released a decade after the show had been canceled. On top of this, it was a major aesthetic redesign for the entire concept. While Star Trek: The Original Series was known for its over-the-top colors and melodramatic action-adventure-oriented directorial choices, The Motion Picture was a contemplative epic, directed by cinema legend Robert Wise, with a graceful score from Jerry Goldsmith. For any of its faults, Star Trek: The Motion Picture wasn’t an attempt to emulate Star Wars. If anything, it was the exact opposite.

And from 1979, each Star Trek movie — to some degree — has been a departure from the previous installment. While the films sometimes struggled to translate the smaller-stakes brilliance of the episodes of the various series into big tentpole events, there’s no denying that each Star Trek film is utterly dissimilar to all other Star Trek films. With 1982’s crowd-pleasing favorite The Wrath of Khan , director Nicholas Meyer solidified a nautical flavor and mashed it up with a revenge thriller. Directing two back-to-back films, The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home , Leonard Nimoy created one movie about a spiritual journey and another film about environmentalism. By the time you get to Meyer’s other Trek film, The Undiscovered Country , you’re dealing with a deeply political film with smart commentary on the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the dangers of nationalism in general.

And that only covers through 1991! The four films spanning The Next Generation crew’s jump to the big screen are equally diverse in themes and concepts. While 1994’s Generations explores ideas of mortality and addiction, 1996’s First Contact reimagined the Trek revenge film with the hero as the person at fault. And though Insurrection (1998) and Nemesis (2002) are generally considered some of the weakest films in the franchise, the performances from guest villains F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hardy are outstanding.

FILM 'STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT' BY JONATHAN FRAKES (Photo by Ronald Siemoneit/Sygma/Sygma via Getty ...

Data (Brent Spiner) and Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) battle the Borg in Star Trek: First Contact .

In 2009, J.J. Abrams famously rebooted the Trek franchise with a new film simply titled Star Trek . While this film still creates a fair amount of controversy in hardcore Trekkie fandom circles, it is probably the best J.J. Abrams movie ever, and holds up extremely well as a great contemporary blockbuster, 15 years after its release. Star Trek Into Darkness , its 2013 sequel, is probably one of the least-loved Trek films of all time, but that doesn’t mean that Benedict Cumberbatch’s take on Khan isn’t fantastic. Nor, can anyone ignore the brilliant spectacle of the film in general. But it was 2016’s Star Trek Beyond that provided one of the most well-balanced Trek movies since The Wrath of Khan. Helmed by Fast and Furious alum Justin Lin with a script co-written by Lin, Simon Pegg, and Doug Jung, Into Darkness’ much-superior follow-up movie showed a deep, deep love for the flavor of The Original Series.

Since 2016, there have been no new Star Trek films in theaters. Instead, the franchise has expanded significantly in the medium of streaming TV, while various plans for a new Star Trek movie have remained stalled for more reasons than even Data could recall off the top of his head. Late 2024 will see the release of the first direct-to-streaming Trek movie — the highly anticipated sci-fi spy flick Star Trek: Section 31 , starring Michelle Yeoh. After that, a new Trek “origin story” movie, directed by Toby Haynes, is expected sometime in 2026, just in time for Star Trek’s 60th anniversary.

Whether or not that movie will actually beam down is unclear. But, until then, if you want to experience a wide variety of sci-fi adventures, set in a cozy, yet compelling future, you can’t do much worse than to binge all the Trek movies, starting at the very beginning.

All 13 Star Trek feature films are streaming on Paramount+.

Where is Star Trek Boldly Going?

It was announced earlier this year that Simon Kinberg ( X-Men ) is slated to produce a Star Trek feature film for the big screen. According to THR, the film would be set decades before the 2009 Star Trek movie directed by JJ Abrams . The movie will still feature Abrams’ input. Back in May, THR reported that the film would explore the world of Star Trek in a time period much closer to our own, featuring the development of Starfleet and initial contact with alien life.

This will be in contrast to the upcoming Starfleet Academy series set in the 32nd Century, contemporary with Star Trek: Discovery . That show will feature Starfleet officials relaunching the Academy after the events of Discovery ’s five seasons.

Much of the main cast was announced for at this year's San Diego Comic Con , including Trek alums such as: Robert Picardo and Mary Wiseman reprising their roles as The Doctor ( Star Trek: Voyager) and Tilly ( Star Trek: Discovery .)

You can now watch the world of Star Trek 's movies for free on PlutoTV.

J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie Star Trek rebooted the iconic sci-fi franchise in a totally new timeline. When a Romulan ship travels back in time and alters the past, the lives of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the future crew of the USS Enterprise are drastically changed. In this new timeline, the Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) sets out for revenge on Spock, setting off a chain of events that reshape the entire universe.
