The Original Series Set Tour to Open

star trek tour ticonderoga ny

If you ever wanted to experience what it would be like to visit the set of Star Trek: The Original Series , now is your chance. Star Trek super-fan James Cawley is honoring the 50th anniversary of the iconic franchise with the opening of his meticulously designed TOS set tour. Located in historic Ticonderoga, New York, and under license by CBS Consumer Products, the set tour brings memories to life by allowing fans to boldly go and tour the sets of the legendary Starship Enterprise.

Stage 9 at Desilu -- now Paramount Pictures -- in Hollywood comes back into focus, as the sets have been re-created exactly as they were laid at Desilu during the original run of TOS . Visitors can step onto the soundstage and be transported directly back to 1966. Additionally, beginning later this month, visitors will enjoy guided tours, photo opportunities and an immersive experience into the world of the classic television series.

Cawley started creating the sets in 1997 after receiving a copy of the original set blueprints from TOS costume designer William Ware Theiss. He then spent 15 years researching, crafting and refining his set replicas alongside other dedicated fans and craftspeople, including Trek alumni and fellow fans prop fabricator Ed Miarecki and concept designer and SFX supervisor Daren R. Dochterman.

Pouring over stills and frame captures from TOS and sourcing vintage materials and antiques, Cawley ensured that even the smallest details were accurately and lovingly reproduced. This spanned from an array of props to set decorations. The result is a stunning achievement offering the most complete and accurate reproduction of the original TOS standing sets.

“To me, there is no other franchise around that is more enjoyable and more socially relevant than Star Trek ,” James Cawley said in a statement. “I’m very thankful for all the support I’ve received on this project and can’t wait to begin welcoming my fellow fans this summer.”

We were just driving through and spotted the museum. Immediately got tickets, and within ten minutes were on a guided tour of the museum. About an hour long, informative, fun, and entertaining. The lighting and sets are so realistic, it felt like we were on the Enterprise itself. Got two Tribbles at the gift shop, which our dog Tilda is delighted with. A strong two thumbs up, and Spock live long and prosper

A must for any Star Trek fan. A faithful reproduction of the original set made to exact specifications. The guided tour lasts about an hour. They tell you up front not to touch anything. You can take as many pictures as you want but no video. You can pretend to flick switches (don't touch them) and by varying your camera angle, it will look like you are. The last stop is the bridge, and if you followed the rules, you will get to take a picture in the Captain's chair.

An outstanding experience and a must-do for any Star Trek fan. The sets are an amazingly accurate recreation of the original sets from the 1960s. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and shared many fascinating insights into how the original series was created and filmed. I particularly enjoyed learning how props were created from everyday objects and recycled from one episode (and even one series) to another. When we walked onto the bridge, I really felt that I was not in a studio but on the starship Enterprise.

This is a Mecca for any hard core Star Trek fan. The sets are rebuilt meticulously to spec. Although there is a gift shop, you come here to see the sets and get a tour from either the owner, who supervises and works on all the builds, or on a special weekend with a cast member. I was lucky enough to be able to spend an hour and a half with William Shatner on the bridge with 10 other people. The surrounding town is charming and Lake George isn't too far. I would pair any trip here with a trip to Lake George or maybe Vermont, which isn't too far away. There is a great little retro diner nearby that you shouldn't miss.

My dad and I just came back from going to Trekonderoga! I bought us tickets for Father's Day/his birthday, and he loved the whole experience. Getting to see Jonathan Frakes and John de Lancie was definitely a highlight, and he was super impressed by the set tour. As someone who personally wasn't super familiar with the show, I still had a great time and thought the experience was great for newbies to the show as well. Our tour guide, Ashley, was super informative and friendly and gave plenty of time for my dad and the group to get the pictures they wanted. The attention to detail throughout was seriously impressive. My dad is already talking about how much he wants to come back when The Next Gen set is complete, so we will be back!

Here's an interesting fact. Did you know the original set was destroyed and that the owner inherited the blueprints, used screenshots and stills from the original series to make sure everything was correct! There's so much to learn about and see - but don't touch!! As a Trekker I was blow away by the details. One thing was how much the cast, crew and set designers had to use their imaginations. Just as the viewers did because what we thought of as technology didn't even exist!!! Mind blown!!!

I was there for one of the celebrity events. In this case, William Shatner was visiting. For $1,500 you could eat in the same room with him. For $500 you could sit in a folding chair on the enterprise bridge with 30 other people and have a group chat of his choosing. For $160 you can get a picture taken of him in the captain's chair while you stand in the background. Regarding the special event, there is a lot of waiting to be done. The line for the photo, the line for the bridge chat, and the worst was probably when it was time to pick up your photo from a table in the high school cafeteria. Five hundred other people are also trying to pick up their picture and there is no one in the hallway to tell them what line to be in or even where to go. So the high school cafeteria was clogged due to all those waiting for an autograph. I just needed the photo, not the autograph, so I found my way around the cafe to a different door and just grabbed the photo. Many others were stuck, unknowingly, in the hallway, in the autograph line. I tried to tell a staff member that they ought to let the hallway people know that they shouldn't all be in the autograph line, but they didn't seem to understand. So I told the crowd and saved a few couples from angry rides home. The staff is otherwise wonderful, especially Marybeth, who must put in some very, very long days. But some of the wait lines could have been better handled and logistics communicated. Aside from the special event, the set tour itself is great. The set itself is crazy detailed and faithful to the original. The people are knowledgeable and the experience was terrific. I don't think I would spend so much money on the special event again, as I didn't get to chat with Mr. Shatner or even come within 10 feet of him. But the rest of the experience was a lot of fun.

If you are a fan of the original Star Trek series then you owe it to yourself to make the pilgrimage to Ticonderoga and this museum. It has an excellent little collection of original Star Trek memorabilia as well as an original set. After you're done have lunch at the House of Pizza across the street.

Absolutely out of this world! Everything is laid out faithfully to the blueprints from the sets on stage 9 at the old Desilu studios. The incredibly accurate sets also feature dramatic colorful lighting effects as well as authentic sounds that that are appropriate to each particular area of the ship. Truly a labor of love by it's owner/founder, James Cawley. He is also currently working on a recreation of ST Next Generation sets, so it will be even more reason to visit. Bravo to Cawley and his band of elves (or Elvis'. :-) for creating all these wonderful sets and authentic props for us to enjoy. So worth the trip up to Ticonderoga and especially in the fall, when the trees start peak color. Kirk out...

An impressive accomplishment that gives you sense of how powerful the acting and the writing were in bringing the original show to life. For serious fans, a must see. The lighting and sound effects sometimes send you back to the world(s) of the show. Bridge sounds are especially effective. The lighting in the hallway spaces also. Often, the meticulously reproduced sets remind you that the whole thing was a teleplay, and that is interesting, too. The design of the original show is, of course, dated. It was for this reason that the resurrection of the show--the updates--were so cool for the fans. This reminds you of what a 50 year old space ship show must have looked like to the actors. Our guide could not have been more helpful or knowledgeable. Of course, things you can touch and places you can sit are very limited.

Built with contributions from  Star Trek: The Next Generation vet Michael Okuda, the four builds are the first nearly-completed replications from the forthcoming  Enterprise- D bridge set replica which Cawley projects to be completed for public visitation in the fall of 2023.

The LCARS interface panels on the first  Next Gen console replicas were designed by Okuda himself, Cawley told us this weekend, with live video consoles featuring animated versions of familiar TNG-era display screen graphics recreated by the Set Tour design team — during our inspection, we caught graphics from “Descent,” “Night Terrors,” “A Matter of Perspective,” “Redemption II,” “Ménage à Troi,” and more on the different bridge stations.

star trek tour ticonderoga ny

Because modern builds use LED lighting which backlights the interface panels very evenly, we learned that Mike Okuda engineered dark gradient ‘falloff’ coloring into the panels to emulate the 1980s-era incandescent internal lighting which lived in the original TNG sets.

The Ops and Conn stations this weekend are missing their upholstered seats, as they are currently being reworked to be more accurate to the Season 7-era looks featured on the series.

A 28,000-square-foot, two-story building adjacent to the Original Series tour complex is set to be the home to the Galaxy -class expansion, which along with the bridge is expected to eventually house an Enterprise- D corridor replica, a recreation of the two-story Main Engineering set, and more as time, space, and budget allows.

Ticonderoga’s ‘Star Trek’ Set Tour: Where No Fan Has Gone Before

It’s a crisp Ticonderoga, NY afternoon, and I’m about to finish the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour, a surprisingly cathartic walk inside a to-scale replica of the classic science-fiction TV show’s set. I’ve stood on the transporter room’s platform, glanced at the copy of Moby-Dick in Captain Kirk’s quarters and spotted Dr. McCoy’s bottle of Saurian brandy in his office. I’m merely a casual Trek fan—I swear—but my mind plays three-dimensional chess on the memory banks when you’ve watched reruns since you were 11. So when our tour guide paused outside those red-orange doors and asked if I “wanted to say anything,” you’re damn right I knew my lines.

“Take me to the bridge,” I said, in my best attempt at a William Shatner baritone.

When the doors swooshed open, dear reader, my knees buckled. Built to the exact specifications of Stage 9 at Desilu studios, the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour, housed inside a former Safeway in Downtown Ticonderoga, is the brainchild of James Cawley, Elvis Presley tribute artist and actor, who since 1997 has overseen several iterations of the set—from his grandfather’s barn and an old car dealership in Port Henry to its most recent destination, the former site of the aforementioned grocery store in Ticonderoga.

star trek tour ticonderoga ny

It started out as a hobby, Cawley says, and a desire to produce fan-made episodes of Star Trek New Voyages , which ran from 2008-15. “I sort of foolishly said to myself, ‘if we’re going to make our own Star Trek , it has to look right, or people will dismiss it outright.’” After the rules for fan films changed in 2015, New Voyages ended and the tours began, under license by CBS.

From stem to stern, every detail and doohickey has been built exactly to spec, through online sleuth-work, digital screen capture enlargements—every means humanly possible. “I’ve been known to tear something down if it’s off one-eighth of an inch,” Cawley says. The tour guides and staff in the lobby nod. No fact-check needed there.

Paradoxically, the franchise’s immense popularity makes trying to find real-life objets d’Trek that much more difficult. Whenever the genuine article is found, word spreads, and eBay prices skyrocket. Take, to list just a few examples, the checkerboard-patterned fabric used as seat covers and sickbay blankets originally designed by Alexander Girard (1907-1993), a midcentury giant who worked at Herman Miller. The particular fabric used on Star Trek featured Lurex and gold flecks that shone on camera. Or take the “powder horn” bottles for Saurian brandy, a favorite of Dr. McCoy and evil Kirk from the episode “The Enemy Within,” which were made from commemorative whiskey bottles the George Dickel Distillery produced only in 1964. Or the pinched decanters used in episodes such as “Journey to Babel,” which were made by Bischoff Glass Company, a subsidiary of Indiana Glass, in 1963. “You can go on eBay and find any number of Bischoff bottles, but not that one,” Cawley says. Finding the exact model of vase from Kirk’s quarters led Cawley, after several dead ends, to contact The Museum of American Glass in West Virginia, which produced hints at its origins that came from a museum newsletter reader. Cawley then found the glassmaker in Eastern Europe. The manufacturer’s name? “I [know],” Cawley says, smiling, “but I’m not telling you.”

star trek tour ticonderoga ny

Through mutual friend Doug Drexler, an Emmy- and Academy Award-winning artist who worked on Star Trek’s The Next Generation series, Cawley was introduced to Matt Jefferies, the legendary art director of the original series, who designed the Starship Enterprise and its interiors, as well as props such as those iconic phasers. They became friends. One day, Jefferies took Cawley to the Dunn-Edwards Paints store, not far from what is now the Paramount lot, and picked out the show’s original colors. “He said ‘here’s the orange, here’s the gray.’ His mind was like a steel trap.” Cawley inherited a copy of Jefferies’ Trek blueprints in 1997.

Since 2016, the Trek tour has attracted fans from all over the world to Ticonderoga—Israel, Tokyo, Brazil, Australia, Ireland and every country in the European Union. “People show up in uniform all the time,” says Drew Malone, our tour guide. “It makes the pictures that much better.” Trekkies have proposed marriage at Spock’s science station in uniform. Grown men have dropped to their knees, overwhelmed, tears in their eyes.

And then there’s Bill Shatner himself. “We were told for months ahead of time, ‘he’s not going to sit in the captain’s chair.’” Shatner came, and looked around, and said to Cawley, “take me to the bridge.” (Of course.) They walked him up there, and he said nothing for what Cawley swears was at least 10 minutes. “I was scared shitless because I thought, he doesn’t like it, it’s wrong, something is not correct. And, finally, he spoke up and said, ‘Bravo guys, the proportions are perfect. And that’s my chair.’”

Since then, Shatner makes regular, um, treks to Ticonderoga for appearances. At press time, he planned to visit again this coming June for photo ops, a Q&A session and presentations. (But that could all change due to the COVID-19 outbreak.) He’ll also jump aboard a three-hour Lake George dinner cruise that features Cawley’s Elvis tribute as the entertainment.

Shatner, it turns out, is a fan of his act.

It’s become a must-see spot for dedicated Trekkies and sci-fi aficionados who yearn to relive the exploits of Captain James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the entire USS Enterprise crew.

But what’s the real deal with this set tour, and is it worth the journey, especially if it involves a lengthy road trip to Upstate New York ?

Here, I’ll provide you with an in-depth account of my recent visit to the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour, giving you all the scoop you need to decide if it’s a worthwhile adventure.

Table of Contents

What is the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour?

The Star Trek Original Series Set Tour is a popular tourist attraction located in Ticonderoga, New York. It is a painstakingly detailed recreation of the original sets used in the filming of the iconic 1960s television series, “Star Trek: The Original Series.”

The tour allows fans of the show to step onto the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) and explore various iconic locations from the series, including the bridge, engineering, sickbay, and the transporter room.

The sets were meticulously designed using original blueprints and thousands of photos to resemble the ones seen on the television show, and they include authentic props, costumes, and interactive displays.

Visitors can take guided tours led by knowledgeable guides who provide insights into the making of the series, share behind-the-scenes stories, and offer interesting trivia about the show and its cast.

Where is the the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour?

The only real gripe that some folks might have about the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour is its somewhat out-of-the-way location. You’ll discover it nestled in Ticonderoga, New York, about 5.5 hours away from New York City.

Of course, you may have heard of Ticonderoga before as it is home to the historic Fort Ticonderoga so this town might already be on your radar.

The venue itself sits smack dab in the heart of downtown Ticonderoga, and they’ve got a decent-sized parking lot reserved for visitors (and parking is free).

Booking the the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour

You can purchase tickets whenever you arrive or book them online.

Here are the different prices broken down as the amount you pay can differ based on your personal situation. Keep in mind these were the prices whenever we visited in the fall of 2023 and they could be subject to change.

  • Adult (Ages 14-54): $23.00
  • Senior (Age 55+): $21.00
  • Child (Ages 5-13): $12.00
  • Child (Under Age 5): Free (No ticket required)
  • Military, Police, Fire (Active or Retired with ID): $21.00
  • Family: 2 Adults, 2 children (Ages 5-13) – Special price: $65.00
  • Family: 2 Adults, 4 children (Ages 5-13) – Special price: $90.00

When it comes to bang for your buck, I’d say the price of the tour is quite reasonable given the value of the experience.

Plus, they sweeten the deal by offering an upgraded option to enlist a personal photographer who can capture some top-notch shots for you in the various rooms. It’s a surefire way to snag some professional-quality photographs that’ll make your visit even more memorable.

Now, if you’re not keen on that route, you can always have your guide snap a few photos for you using your phone. But of course those smartphone snapshots might not quite reach the same level of photographic awesomeness you’d get from a dedicated photographer.

My experience at the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour

I’ll start by confessing that I’ve never really been a Star Trek enthusiast.

It’s not that I had any real aversion to it, but I never took the time to dive into the series or its movies.

I guess you could say I leaned more toward the Star Wars camp, and I might’ve harbored a notion that Star Trek was a bit too “nerdy” for my taste – a sentiment that many can probably relate to.

That being said, when I stumbled upon the news of an impeccably reconstructed Star Trek Original Series set, my curiosity got the best of me.

There’s something undeniably fascinating about touring movie sets, whether they’re original or faithful recreations. The sheer amount of craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into these creations is a spectacle in itself and definitely worth experiencing.

Given my inherent love for all things related to space, I couldn’t help but think that a visit to the “Desilu Studio” might just ignite a newfound interest in Star Trek – which, I must say, it certainly did!

Now, let’s dive into the actual tour, which lasts about one hour.

I swung by in the middle of a week during the fall, so I reckon it wasn’t peak season. Upon arrival, I expressed my desire to embark on a tour, and they promptly informed me that one would kick off in just a couple of minutes.

While I waited, I decided to explore the gift shop area, which was a treasure trove of fascinating souvenirs and a trove of memorabilia well worth perusing. Oh, and you can’t possibly miss the imposing USS Enterprise suspended from the ceiling – it’s quite the sight to behold.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour lobby

At first, it seemed like I might have the privilege of a private tour guide all to myself, but just before we embarked, a couple joined in. Initially, I admit I was a tad disappointed not to have that one-on-one experience, but as it turned out, having them on the tour enhanced the whole experience.

It happened that one of them was a bona fide Star Trek enthusiast, and being on the tour with them helped me gain a deeper appreciation for everything we were about to see. You could tell they were having an absolute blast.

Our journey commenced with some introductory insights into the vast Star Trek universe, covering the various movies and TV shows.

It was abundantly clear that our guide was a font of knowledge when it came to all things Star Trek. There wasn’t a single question left unanswered, and having someone so well-versed and evidently passionate about Star Trek to lead us through the different sections of the USS Enterprise was a real treat.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour movie set entrance

Upon stepping foot inside the studio, I was instantly struck by the level of craftsmanship and also how the audio helped enhance the experience at different times, utilizing different decibel levels.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour corridor

While I had caught glimpses of scenes from the original Star Trek series, seeing these rooms up close was a whole different experience. If you’re a die-hard fan who’s followed the show for years, the level of detail will likely blow you away. It’s like stepping right into the world of the series.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour corridor

The tour’s progression can vary depending on how other groups are moving through the studio, so it’s not always a cookie-cutter experience. This dynamic adds an element of unpredictability to the adventure, keeping things fresh and exciting (and your guide on their toes).

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour

We hopped from room to room, and each one had its own unique tale to share. What truly piqued my interest was the presence of authentic props – some from the original series and others from different entries in the Star Trek universe.

Witnessing these pieces of sci-fi history up close was truly captivating and getting the backstory on how some of these were created was equally interesting. Your guide should be able to point these original props out to you but if you really know your stuff you might be able to find a few on your own.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour

I won’t spoil the entire tour by revealing every snapshot I took, as I believe in leaving a bit of mystery for your own visit. However, you can expect to explore some of the iconic rooms like the sickbay and the transporter room, which are definite highlights of the experience.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour teleporter

Even as an ultra-casual Star Trek fan, I couldn’t help but recognize the iconic transporter room, and I can only imagine how much super fans must enjoy having their photos taken there.

What also makes the experience special is delving into the behind-the-scenes magic of how the set was crafted.

I soaked up a treasure trove of captivating tidbits about the filming process, and now, when I watch the episodes, it’s hard not to be drawn into those intriguing little details I’ve picked up along the way.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour

After you’ve meandered through the corridors and explored various rooms, your ultimate destination is exactly what you’d expect – the bridge.

Stepping onto the bridge is like stepping into the heart of the USS Enterprise, and it’s here that you’ll get the chance to do what you’ve probably been dreaming of: take a seat in the captain’s chair. It’s an experience that truly leaves a lasting impression.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour

For an even more exceptional experience, you might want to try timing your visit to coincide with one of the days when William Shatner himself is on-site.

Our guide shared that occasionally, Shatner himself leads the guided tours, which I can only imagine would be absolutely fantastic.

Additionally, he hosts sit-down talks on the bridge where he shares insights on a wide range of topics – an opportunity that promises to be equally captivating.

So, if you’re a die-hard Star Trek fan or just a curious visitor, catching one of these special moments could make your visit truly unforgettable.

The Star Trek Original Series Set Tour is undeniably a one-of-a-kind experience.

It falls squarely into the bucket-list category for any level of Star Trek fan, promising an enjoyable and memorable time if you have even a passing interest in the series. However, even if you don’t consider yourself a Star Trek aficionado, the tour is well worth your time purely for the stunning set they’ve meticulously crafted.

In fact, if you’re anything like me, it might just ignite a newfound passion for the series. I now find myself watching an episode almost daily, drawn into the captivating world of Star Trek. It’s an adventure well worth embarking on.

I can already see this is not accurate! They should have added the view from the bridge to the front of the bridge but it’s blank. Also sick bay was more than one small, tiny room. It’s very disappointing!! If it was across the street from my house and free, I might go see it!

Hi Norma, not sure about the bridge but there are more rooms to Sick Bay; I just did not include all of them.

It’s 100% accurate. It was built from the original blueprints. Every room is there and spot on perfect.

Norma, this is an exact recreation of the actual sets at Desilu studios. I’ve been there and believe me everything you’ve seen on TV is there in extreme detail. The Bridge is the best part! Thanks

When I was there last time in October 2021 there was an active display on the forward screen. Besides, James Cawley the owner of the tour is a stickler for accuracy. If it’s not in this article it was just accidentally left out.

Norma, You’re incorrect…

Wrong on every level. Educate yourself, please, you sound like a yroll with an agenda

Norma I have been there multiple times. Headed back next month in fact. This set has everything you criticized it for not having and much more. It is truly a wonderful experience to see.🖖

Besides James Cawley, the super fan and owner of the tour is a stickler for accuracy. If it wasn’t in this article it was an accident.

When I toured it last time in October 2021, there was an active screen displayed on the forward viewer. 🤷

My husband and I visited there this year. He’s a big Star Trek fan. He loved it and even though I’m not a Star Trek fan I found it amazing. Another movie tour we did on the other side of New York, we did a road trip to Jamestown, ny where we visited the Lucy and desi museum, and they also included Star Trek. It had the movie sets of I love Lucy. Not far you can visit her home, her grave and her statue in the park. There’s other movie tours we did in the south. Anyone interested please let me know.

There was a USS TICONDEROGA in the series

So glad you enjoyed your visit. The place is amazing for us Trekkies and for anyone else. I’ve been there many times for a tour and for the special Shatner events. This year, I saw Jonathan Frankes and John DeLance from Next Generation. They said the place was amazing and one of a kind.

If you are a fan of the original series this set tour cannot be missed. I went in July when William Shatner was visiting the set. I spent the money on the apples package and it was totally worth it. I was able to with Shatner in briefing room. And in the main engineering I took a punch from William Shatner. The sets are wonderfully detailed and meticulously maintained. They do encourage you to wear your uniform if you choose which I did. The staff are wonderful and the owner, James Cowley, let our tour and it was a wonderful experience with lots of behind the scenes and adventures. I can’t say enough about this tour it is a wonderful experience especially for an original series fan such as myself. For those of you that are Next Generation fans they are working on building the bridge of the Enterprise d for the Next Generation fans. He also has in storage the Galileo shuttlecraft that will be displayed at a later time. For fans this is a wonderful experience and I cannot recommend it high enough you need to go to this set tour!!

FASCINATING, as Mr.Spock would say !, I love the Original Series the Best !, AS a High Schooler in 68 and our black n white TV it didn’t interest me , but we got a,COLOR TV and I loved the program !!! My name is Jim and CAPTON KIRK being James T. KIRK GOT ME FASCINATING ABOUT BEING A STAR SHIP CAPTON!!! SOME DAY LOL. I WAS HOOKED! I NOW HAVE THE ORIGINAL SERIES ON D V.D AND STILL WATCH IT OFTEN !!! 60 + YEARS LATER!!!, STAR TREC WHAT AN INSPIRING TV PROGRAM! I WOULD SAY THAT PROGRAM INSPIRED OUR SPACE PROGRAM! IT’S SELF! SPACE THE FINAL FRONTIER!!!! THE VOYAGES OF THE STAR SHIP INTERPISE!!!! NOW A LIFE TIME MISSON TO EXPLORING SPACE THE FINAL FRONTIER!!!!! IT’S THE MOST SUGNIFACANT PROGRAM EVER SHOWN ON TV .

The Set Tour also has an all immersive, 3-day convention in August. There are the tours as usual, some guided by the celebrity guests, there are several actors from the shows who give talks in the the auditorium, special science and fan talks in various rooms, an autograph room, a vendor room, an Elvis Concert on Saturday night, mini golf, a dinner. I’m telling you, it’s 3 days packed full! Ticonderoga is also a beautiful area right by Lake Champlain at the foot of the Adirondacks! There is also the historic Fort Ticonderoga for Revolutionary War buffs. If you like Star Trek, you must go!

I and my 92 yr Mother are making the trek to Ticonderoga in November. I want her to be able to meet William Shatner and perhaps get a great photo of the two of them on the transporter (on the same disk so as to look like her is saving her! LOL) I was there in 2015 for a month during the filming of the last fan film made there. It was the last time Richard Hatch would be on film as he passed away several months later. The bridge was not complete then Norma. But it is a complete 360 experience now. I was there in December 2018 for William Shatner’s appearance. It was everything I had hoped for. Speaking to him, listening to him as he told tales of experiences in filming the original show. He will answer any question. He will take as many pictures with you as possible. Mom is very much looking forward to seeing one of her heros, Capt. James T Kirk!

Hello, my name is Markus McLaughlin;

If Mr. Shatner hadn’t blocked me on X/Twitter, I would have come and visit during his time there.

However, I met Mr. Takei and the late Miss Nichols, and it was a REAL privilege.

My friend Doug Jones, plays “Saru” on Discovery; and I have texted Jeri Ryan, Brent Spiner, and Mike Okuda online.

I fell in love with TOS since 1978, I was 6, I would come home from school; I tuned in Monday through Friday, and turn the tv on. I fell in love! I found out about TMP over a year later; and I was very happy to see it with my late parents. I have seen every single Trek film in the cinema. I have seen almost every single Trek tv series ever made. When I lived in Maine, the Maine Trek Fan Club, the USS Kasimar, had the TOS bridge replica built; it was built at my late father’s vocational school. I was very fortunate to be on that replica. But, I want to go to NY State and see the REAL DEAL! This die hard fan also was in the late Mr. Nimoy’s audience TWICE, once in Maine, and a year before he passed away at a sci-fi concert at Symphony Hall, in Boston. I wish I could’ve met him but at least I was in the same venue as him.

I cried when Mr. Nimoy passed away; he WAS Spock, he WAS Star Trek in every single way!

His memory, continues to live long and prosper…

17 Of The Best Things To Do In Lake George, NY

L ooking for things to do in Lake George, NY? This gorgeous lake in New York State’s Adirondack region is the perfect vacation destination. Whether you want to relax and chill or find new adventures, there’s something here for everyone.

I received free admission to some attractions in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are 100% my own.

One of the things I love most about a Lake George vacation is that there are so many things to do! Having spent all my childhood summers here with my grandparents, we were always taking boat tours, visiting historic forts and more. Now I’m carrying on the tradition and sharing these experiences with my own family.

One visit and I know you’ll love it as much as we do! If you’re planning your next family vacation here, these are just a few of the awesome activities you’ll find around the lake.

Located at the northern tip of Lake George, Fort Ticonderoga is the perfect place to give your kids a history lesson and have some fun at the same time. Situated between northern Lake George and the southern end of Lake Champlain, the fort played an important part in the Revolutionary War.

The fort is steeped in history and as authentic as you can get without a time machine! When you visit the living history exhibits, the shoemaker isn’t just demonstrating how shoes were made back in the 1700s. He making actual shoes in real time. These shoes are then worn by the soldiers and everyone else working at the fort.

The tailors? They’re making the uniforms, one piece at a time! Every person that you see in Revolutionary War attire is wearing clothing that were made on site.

Speaking of time, the year that’s being represented also changes regularly. This summer’s costumes and exhibits reflect life in the year 1774. However, visit next summer they’ll be sharing what life was like at the fort in 1759.

Exhibits include everything from art and dioramas to uniforms and weapons. There were plenty of hands on activities for the kids too. My 9 year old loved the scavenger hunt and both girls had a blast try to lift an old cannon (it’s heavier than it looks).

Kid will love the musket demonstration, where the soldiers show how they load and fire their weapons.

Just be sure to plug your ears!

If you want to learn even more about the fort, you can join one of their special tours. These include:

  • Ticonderoga Guns By Night : This 90 minute tour includes a dramatic nighttime demonstration of weapons. It’s a great tour for history buffs who want to learn more about how they were used during the French And Indian War to attack and defend the fort.
  • The Gossip Tour Of Fort Ticonderoga: This adults-only tour includes all the drama! From scandals and hijinks to unsolved crimes and stolen wives, you’ll want to leave the kids at home for this one.
  • Beneath Fortress Walls: Take a guided tour under the fort walls to learn more about the history of the building and re-building of the fort.
  • Cannon And Coffee Tour: This early bird program for those of you who like to start the day early! Tour the museums artillery collection and learn what it tells us about the history, technology and even art of the day. Coffee included!
  • Boat Cruises: When you’re done touring the fort, hop on a boat for a cruise up Lake Champlain. This 75 minute scenic cruise includes beautiful vistas of New York’s Adirondacks as well as Vermont’s green mountains. Along the way, you’ll learn about Lake Champlain’s maritime and military heritage and see underwater shipwrecks using sonar readings. Beer, wine, soft drinks, water and snacks are available for purchase on board

Fort Ticonderoga is open from May-October every year.

After you travel back in time at Fort Ticonderoga, you can take a trip to the future! Not far from Fort Ticonderoga, you can experience the final frontier with a Star Trek Original Series Set Tour .

Star Trek fans will love being able to walk through exact replicas of the sets from the 1960’s television sci-fi series. While the original sets were dismantled and mostly destroyed, that didn’t stop Trekkie James Cawley. He used the original blueprints from the show to rebuild these sets just as they looked during filming.

Plan your trip just right, you may even run into William Shatner. He’s been known to make special appearances from time to time.

You may also want to catch Trekonderoga, an annual fan favorite event. The 2021 event is scheduled for September 24-26 and includes a special guest appearance by George Takei, who starred as Lieutenant Sulu in the series and several Star Trek movies as well.

If you enjoy wandering through charming towns filled with quaint shops, galleries and restaurants, you’ll love the small town vibe of Bolton Landing.

You’ll find shops filled with antiques, crafts and even Christmas decor. When you get hungry, stop into Bolton Beans and have lunch in an old train car.

Bolton Landing is also home to the Sagamore Resort , the gorgeous lakeside hotel that also happens to be where my husband proposed to me! There’s no better place to stay on Lake George if you really want to treat yourself.

You don’t have to stay overnight to enjoy the Sagamore though. Drop in and dine at one of their award winning restaurants for a delicious lunch or dinner with a view.

Adirondack Extreme

If your family is into outdoor adventure, Adirondack Extreme Adventure Course should be at the top of your to-do list. I’ve done zipline courses from Sarasota, Florida to Costa Rica and this one is one of my all time favorites.

There are a variety of courses to choose from and you can upgrade for more extreme experiences. You’ll get the best of both worlds with the 3+ hour Treetop & Zipline Adventure Combo. For $58, it includes the first two adventure courses as well as the new Low Rider Zip Tour.

The scenic views that come with this aerial adventure course are part of what makes this course so amazing! We had the best time ziplining through the trees and over the babbling brooks. By the time we were finished, my girls were experts at navigating the swaying bridges high above the ground.

The courses offer 25+ obstacles that can be moderated in difficulty. The Low Rider Zip Tour is an introductory zipline course that’s perfect for both beginners and seasoned obstacle course adrenaline junkies!

Though it may seem dangerous, the course has a reliable safety system in place. The Clic It Smart Belay System is designed to ensure that you are clipped safely to the lines at all times. There’s also a 1/2 hour safety training where you’ll get to practice on the ground first.

NOTE : I don’t recommend this for anyone with a fear of heights.

Up Yonda Farm , in Bolton Landing, is an environmental nature center that all ages can enjoy. Families can explore the butterfly garden, go for a hike on 3+ miles of nature trails and learn more about Adirondack animals and more in the interactive museum.

Little ones can learn about the life cycles of butterflies, see how maple syrup is made or even get up close and personal with turtles and snakes. They’ll also love the treasure hunt, where they’ll need to search for five hidden geochaches which can then be turned in for prizes.

Finally, you can finish up the afternoon with a scenic picnic lunch by the lake.

Saddle Up Stables

What’s better than a family horseback ride? How about horseback riding with a lake view!

There are quite a few locations where you can ride, including Saddle Up Stables . Located between Bolton Landing and Lake George Village, it was voted “Best Of Lake George” for horseback riding in 2021.

Take one of their guided trail rides and you’ll get beautiful views of the lake and possibly deer and other wildlife too. Riders must be seven years or older but pony rides are available for the younger kids.

Check out this list of ranches for more riding options around the lake.

No trip to the lake is complete without a visiting Lake George Village. Located at the southern end of Lake George, this fun spot is where all the action is.

You’ll want to plan to spend the day because there’s so much to do here. Take a boat tour, explore a historic fort or wander through the House Of Frankenstein Wax Museum!

We had a great time just browsing the shops. There are shops selling crafts, souvenirs, clothing and even a Christmas shop.

There are multiple arcades and a small amusement park for the kids.

Shepard Park has a playground for the kids as well as an amphitheater where there are free concerts throughout the summer. We thought it was the perfect place to relax while we enjoyed our ice cream cones.

If you’re into fishing, grab your rod and reel and head to the public dock. Otherwise, just take a leisurely stroll down by the water instead.

There’s so much to see in Lake George Village you may just want to book a hotel and stay a few extra days.

Lake George Steamboat Tours

There’s no better way to the lake than from a boat and the Lake George Steamboat Company has lots of cool options. Located in the Lake George Village, you can choose lunch and dinner cruises, a cruise with a champagne brunch or even a Rockin’ Music Cruise with live music. Kids can set their inner pirate free on the pirate cruise, complete with loot filled goodie bags!

We took the one hour Minnie Ha Ha cruise. This authentic steamboat, complete with paddle wheel, is one of my favorite ways to tour the lake.

We spent half our time pointing out which lake houses we’d buy when we win the lottery! This was my top choice…what do you think?

The girls had fun checking out the engine room to see what happens behind the scenes.

Towards the end of the cruise, you’ll be treated to a song from the steam calliope. If you’ve never heard a steamboat playing a duet with its own echo, you’ve totally been missing out. Listen closely and you’ll hear the echo.

While our tour was only an hour, there are longer tours available. There’s even a six hour tour that takes you the length of the entire lake. Each cruise offers snacks and drinks (cocktails too) at what I thought were very reasonable prices. So sit back, grab a drink and enjoy!

Fort William Henry

While you’re touring Lake George Village, you may also want to check out Fort William Henry . Built in 1755, this British fort played a pivotal part in the French and Indian War.

While you’re learning the history of the fort, the kids may be invited to “join” the king’s army. They’ll be assigned a musket, a uniform and a certificate showing that they’ve enlisted. At the end of their “service”, they even receive a coin as payment.

Walk through the various museum exhibits, then watch live demonstrations of soldiers firing muskets and cannons.

You can also get a glimpse of what the soldiers must have seen as they defended the fort.

The fort is open from May-October every year and if you time your trip just right, you may even catch a live re-enactment of the Battle Of Lake George. The Fort William Henry Hotel is close by as well, if you’re looking for a place to stay.

Wine lovers will want to stop into the Adirondack Winery for a wine tasting.

Photo Courtesy of the Adirondack Winery

Opened in 2008, this popular winery was one of the first micro-wineries in the country. Though they started small, they now have thousands of visitors a year and are popular with both the locals and tourists.

Here you’ll find a variety of locally-handcrafted and award-winning wines. Enjoy a glass while you take in the beauty of Lake George and the Adirondacks.

Have the kids in tow? No problem! Children and strollers are welcome and there’s even a small kids corner so they can play while you sample.

Walk-ins are welcome but availability is limited so reservations are strongly encouraged.

There aren’t many activities more family friendly than mini golf (or as my family calls it, putt-putt). Goony Golf and the Around The World Golf Course are two of the more popular locations in Lake George Village.

Goony Golf is both whimsical and wacky, with silly animals, elves and even a T-rex.

The Around The World miniature golf course is filled with replicas of famous landmarks, so you can travel the world as you play.

Other courses include Lumberjack Pass and Pirate’s Cove so choose your favorite and have a little putt-putt fun!

If your family prefers to spend the day relaxing lakeside, you want to hit Million Dollar Beach in Lake George Village. Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, this is the biggest and most popular beach on the lake.

There are lifeguards, picnic tables (with grills) as well as a boat launch and boat inspection area. It’s a great place to chill for the day and just enjoy a little lake life R&R!

Note: Pets are not allowed so just keep that in mind if you’ve brought your furry friend on vacay with you.

Water Sports & Activities

The beach is nice but one of the best things about a trip to the lake is playing IN the water! Luckily there are no shortage of water sports and activities around Lake George.

Choose from jet skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing and more. You can even go parasailing and enjoy beautiful views from high above the lake.

For a more laid back day, rent a boat and have a picnic on one of the many islands. You’ll find plenty of boat rentals available on the Visit Lake George page.

Hiking Trails

If you’re looking for more outdoor activities with the family, you don’t have to go far to find them. Hiking is another popular activity around the lake and there are no shortage of scenic trails .

These hikes are the perfect way to admire the natural beauty of Adirondack mountains up close.

Located just behind Lake George Village, Prospect Mountain is one of the top destination in the area for hiking. You’ll follow a marked trail for about three miles round trip and get some great views of the lake along the way.

The hike takes you through forests, past waterfalls and over streams. You may even run across the old cable incline railway, once the longest Cable Incline Railway in the world.

Once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with spectacular views of Lake George and Vermont.

NOTE: This hiking trail is not recommended for younger children because of the steep grade in some areas. However, you can still drive to the top to enjoy the panoramic views.

We love theme parks and The Great Escape theme park is a fun destination for the whole family. Originally build as Storytown USA, it was one of my favorite places as a child. Back in the day, it had a Mother Goose storybook theme and was geared towards smaller children. Things have definitely changed a lot since then!

Close view on the construction of a large wooden rollercoaster

The name was eventually changed to The Great Escape and in the 90’s, the park was bought by Six Flags. Today you’ll find everything from kiddie rides to thrill rides and even a waterpark.

The lodge is open year-round and features an indoor waterpark as well. Howver, the theme park is closed during the winter months so you’ll want to plan accordingly.

While it’s not on Lake George, Tubby Tubes River Co. is located just five minutes from Lake George Village on the lower Hudson River. Here you can hop in an inner tube and take a lazy, two hour guided trip down the river.

Life doesn’t get much more relaxing than this and it’s the perfect way to enjoy the Adirondacks! Upgrade to get a tube with a backrest or one to carry your cooler (alcohol is allowed as long as it’s not in glass bottles).

Located about 30 minutes from Lake George Village, the Natural Stone Bridge And Caves feature the largest marble cave entrance in the eastern U.S.

Take a self-guided above ground nature trail and wander by an old sawmill, waterfalls and surface caves. Explore the lighted caves and grottos to see tranquil pools and raging water.

In addition to the hiking, there are plenty of kid specific activities.Children can climb rock walls, mine for gemstones, take part in a dino dig and lots more. You could easily spend an entire day here.

There are so many things to do in Lake George area that even I haven’t done them all…yet! Which of these activities do you think your family would enjoy most? Do you have anything I should add to the list?
