Hello everyone.

We have just decided on a trip to Russia, although we have always wanted to visit but it has just become a possibility.

As we only have 3 weeks to plan the trip, I would be very helpful for any advice on our preliminary itinerary.

Sunday June 7th: Fly direct from Dublin, Ireland to Moscow on S7 airlines - (Is this airline ok? Has anyone else booked online with them?)

Flight arriving 5.45 am on Monday, June 8th - go to hotel by taxi (pre-arranged with hotel-2150 Rubles -is this price about right?) - what time would we expect to arrive at hotel?

Hope to Book into Mixima Zarya- as we are on a budget this hotel seemed good value, reports seem good for location etc. Getting Visa assistance from them - 750 rubles each? - I hope they will extend to cover dates for our whole trip - is this usual / possible or will I have to get invitation from hotels in Suzdal & St.Petersburg as well? Or should we use an agency for this?

I'm hoping they will allow us to book in a little early, to freshen up. Anyhow we have Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday in Moscow. I'll have to do more research on what to see & visit in Moscow, and I'm also looking at tours and or guide - I've seen some recommendations for Patriarshy Dom Tours. Will have to check out more - any comments on this company? Also have come across a young man who looks interesting for a tour guide: Daniel Petrov. http://www.waytomoscow.com - has anyone any views or knowledge of him?

We plan to leave Moscow on Thursday 11th June and travel by train to Vladimir - and then onto Sudzal by bus. The trains seem a bit confusing - but I think we can take Moscow Kurskaia to Gorkii -Train 62 - leaving at 13.55 - should we pre-book tickets for this?

In Suzdal we hope to stay 2 nights in

Pushkarskaya Sloboda - unfortunately the lovely monastery seems to be closed to visitors - we plan to just relax in Suzdal - stroll around see what is to be seen and stop and smell the roses as such ;)

Leaving here on Sat 13th morning - bus to Vladimir - leave our bags in the train station (hopefully) and see a bit of Vladimir. Taking the 22.21 overnight train: Gorkii to St.Petersburg, which hopefully stops in Vladimir - should we buy tickets for this in advance? We would like to get the 2 berth cabin. Is it okay to buy train tickets online? Should we use an agency for this? Such as expresstorussia.com ? The trains thing is very confusing ;(

Anyhow, we hope to arrive in St.Petersburg-Glavnyi-at approx: 10am on Sunday 14th -again should we arrange train tickets through Hotel or a company, or can you buy them direct from the train company?

In St.Pete we hope to stay at the Comfort Hotel - again it seems to have good reviews on Trip Advisor- my bible ;)

In St. Petersburg for 3 nights and then fly to Moscow, again with S7, - on Wed 17th for a late flight back to Ireland.

We thought of using tour guides - possibly "St.Petersburg with Anna" - have heard her recommended on this site. Or any other advise?

I believe it's advisable to go with a tour guide or group to visit St.Catherines palace etc.?

Any advice or comments on this itinerary would be really very much appreciated. I am, as I said, doing this in a rush so I may be making some really obvious mistake or missing something really important.

Hey Eileen, welcome to the exciting country!

You'll surely get several pieces of advice, mine would be:

- S7 is a bit lower standard than European flag carriers but quite ok, it's the only direct from Dublin in any case

- Russian visa/consulate (sigh). Do give yourself enough of time to make it. 10 days will make it safe. Leaving it till the last day will lead to being heavily overpriced. Bureaucrats will be bureaucrats.

- Guiding and individual tours in Moscow - please see in your mailbox.

I am taking your advise and now looking at the Milan Hotel, much nearer our airport.

Having a problem getting an email or web address for them tho .... anyone out there be able to help with this????

Also, think I will have to get visa help from a company : "Go to Russia" seems to get good write ups here. Anyone had bad experience ?????

The price for the prearranged taxi sounds a bit steep, you can find taxi services for about half the price. On the other hand, that could be a bit tricky if you don't speak any Russian (the cheaper taxis can be pre-arranged for about 1200, depending on where you need to go from the airport. But in this case the driver won't meet you with a sign with your name on it, he''l just call you when your plane lands and tell you where he's parked - and the chances that a driver will spaek English are very slim).

Don't like the sound of Zarya, mainly because of the location. What's your budget? Maybee it's possible to look at options closer to city centre.

Oh, and I wouldn't recommend flying back from StPetersburg to Moscow. You should take the train. It may not be much cheaper (it may actually cost just as much), but you'll save on taxis to/from airport. Plus S7 has a bad reputation as far as domestic flights are concerned (not the internationsl flights , so don't worry). So I'd advise an overnight train. Find one that leaves really late at night - that way you'll still have the same amount of time to spend in StPetesburg, but you'll save on 1 night's accomidation ^)

Hi! Do find the hotel in the center. There are quite a few options on different budget.

I'd do a day trip to Vladimir not to use it as a stop over on your way to St. Petersburg, and Vladimir is not on the way to St. Petersburg.

Also I would not trust leaving the bags at the bus station.

As for otel in St.Petersbur, look into Vera hotel or Dostoevskiy hotel, this is trusted small and not expensive options

I will give you a piece of advice.

The hotel Zarya is quate far from the center and you must be ready for Moscow traffics.

It is better to pre book tickets for the train.

I don't recomend to leave your bags in train. That is not a good idea.

Plans have moved on - I'm now flying to St.Petersburg first via Dusledorf. So I will arrive there at around 17.30 - haven't figured out yet how to get from airport etc.

Staying there 3 nights and hope to go to Suzdal then.

Still struggling about a hotel in St.Pete - thanks Dimitrivulkan for the advise re Vera & Dostoeviskiy - I had hoped to book Stony Island - but am waiting a few days now for a reply to email - their webite doesn't let you choose which of the hotels to book.

Also - in Suzdal was really hoping to book Pushkarskaya Sloboda - I got the website from another poster - very helpful - but the website is all in Russian and am also awaiting reply to email .....

I really look forward to my visit and any further advise will be welcome - thanks again.
