  • By Tomás Mier

Sabrina Carpenter is just circling back, following up, and checking in! On Monday, the singer surprised fans by announcing a second North American leg to her successful Emails I Can’t Send tour.

“i said i was done but i was just confused,” Carpenter wrote on Instagram, quoting a lyric in her song “Already Over” and referring to her brief tour earlier this year. “So excited to announce the second leg of the emails i can’t send tour in North America.”

Carpenter will begin her tour in Fort Lauderdale on Mar. 16 before making her way through Texas and stopping at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles on Apr. 20. She’ll then head to the east coast stopping at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on May 2 and New York City’s Terminal 5 on May 11.

“I can’t wait to see your faces and maybe even sing some new songs!” she wrote.

This fall, Carpenter stopped in 14 major cities, including Los Angeles’ the Wiltern and New York City’s Webster Hall. Throughout the tour, she went viral for changing the outro to her song “Nonsense” each night.

Emails I Can’t Send charted at No. 23 on the all-genre Billboard 200 , and stayed on the tally for two weeks. Speaking about the inspirations for the album’s title with Vogue , Carpenter explained, “When I wrote the actual title track, I was [using] one of the emails that I had written to myself, and I just said out loud: ‘That’s the name of the album!’ Then every song kind of came from that place. Every song came from those emails or messages or whatever my way of coping was at the time. I think it captures a really important time in my life.”

The concert was absolutely stunning and amazing! She kept us engaged during the concert by letting us sing certain parts of the songs and got us hyped up when she asked us to get off our seats to jump with the music!! Sabrina even made us work out with her by shaking our limbs progressively faster in the middle of the concert. Most importantly, her vocals were absolutely melodic and exactly like what I heard on YouTube, just simply raw talent!

The audience was also very good as no one was really pushing one another to get to the front etc. and everyone was just singing and cheering along to your lovely music!

Once again, thank you for coming to Singapore to perform and I really appreciate it! I hope that you can fulfil your promise of coming here again, especially when you release Singular Act 2!

p.s. Please release it soon, I'm dying to hear the rest of the album ever since you released Pushing 20 and unofficially Exhale.

This was one of the best shows I’ve attended. Maggie Lindemann, the opening act, sounded very good and got me hyped for the show. Sabrina came out with amazing energy, dancing and singing her heart out the entire show. She sounded phenomenal, and I was extremely excited. The highlight of the night was when I held up my sign and Sabrina read it out loud before Prfct, which is awesome especially because the sign read “Sabrina, ur Prfct to me, we love you”. That meant so much to me that she read it. Overall, this show was infinity stars/5 and I can’t wait for her to come back.

Why was Sabrina's concert in Portland canceled?

On April 11, Sabrina was scheduled to perform at Keller Auditorium in Portland, Oregon. However, before the artist arrived on stage Monday night, the concert was canceled due to a "credible security threat," according to Rolling Stone .

"Employees with the Crystal Ballroom called after they received a phone call from an anonymous person claiming they were going to blow up the venue," Lieutenant Nathan Sheppard of the Portland Police Bureau told the outlet. Sabrina was originally slated to perform at the Crystal Ballroom, but the show was moved to Keller Auditorium to allow for more space, the police explained.

"While the threat was not directed at Keller Auditorium specifically, Sabrina and event organizers agreed that out of an abundance of caution, the show be called off," AEG, Sabrina's tour promoter, shared with Rolling Stone . "Steps were taken to ensure that the audience exited the venue calmly, quickly, and safely."

After the cancellation, Sabrina took to Twitter to send a message to fans. "Portland - i can't tell you how much it breaks my heart, this is the last thing i wanted to do but due to unforeseen circumstances we will not be able to perform tonight," she began. "i am so sorry. i love you very much."

Who is the opening act?

Sabrina has yet to announce whether she will be touring with an opening act or not for the second leg. Girlhouse performed as her opener for the first leg, and when Sabrina went on tour in 2017, Alex Aiono and New Hope Club were her opening acts. In 2019, Maggie Lindemann opened for the North America leg of the tour.

Fueling excitement around the tour is Carpenter’s highly acclaimed third studio release Singular: Act I. V Magazine noted, “Carpenter is on the brink of superstardom…the pop mega-starlet reaches new heights on her new album…” Released last November, the 8-track Singular: Act I features Carpenter’s chart rising Top 40 hit “Sue Me,” a song she says is about prioritizing your self-worth. “What I can legally say, is that it’s inspired by real-life experiences.”

As previously announced, later this year Carpenter will release Singular: Act II. She’ll also take on her first leading film role in The Short History of The Long Road and will also be seen in the upcoming Netflix comedy Tall Girl.

Here Is Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘The Eras Tour’ Setlist

Lexi Lane

Sabrina Carpenter is currently continuing to open for Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour , as she is joining her for the Australian leg of shows in Melbourne and Sydney. Carpenter took the stage at the first one of Melbourne Cricket Grounds last night to treat fans to a selection of her best songs.

Most of Carpenter’s setlist was from her most recent record, including the “Because I Liked A Boy” and “ Feather ” singles. She also opened her set by teasing the fans in the crowd with Swift’s “Picture To Burn” (one of Carpenter’s pre-show staple picks that soundtracks her childhood footage) and Blondie’s “Atomic.”

As another surprise in Carpenter’s opening act performance, she also covered “Hopelessly Devoted To You.” When Carpenter was opening for Swift’s South American leg , she had used ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” as her nightly cover instead. With night two of Melbourne happening tonight, time will tell if she keeps the Grease song in her setlist — or swap it out for something else entirely different.

Finally, Carpenter closed out her set with “Nonsense,” where she once again changed the outro and kept the running tradition going strong.

Check out Sabrina Carpenter’s setlist from Melbourne night one below, according to Setlist.FM .

Sabrina Carpenter’s The Eras Tour Australia Setlist

1. “Read Your Mind” 2. “Feather” 3. “Vicious” 4. “Already Over” 5. “Tornado Warnings” 6. “Opposite” 7. “Hopelessly Devoted To You” (cover) 8. “Fast Times” 9. “Because I Liked A Boy” 10. “Nonsense” (custom outro)

After achieving ubiquity as a platinum-certified pop force of nature, superstar actress, and accomplished film and television producer, Sabrina Carpenter empowered herself to open up like never before as a songwriter and storyteller. As such, the songstress underwent a series of creative and personal transformations chronicled on her fifth full-length album and 2022 debut for Island Records, Emails I Can’t Send . Musically, she ushered the sound into new territory with an emphasis on live instrumentation. Simultaneously, she pulled lyrics right from her most intimate experiences—as if writing in real-time. Ultimately, she challenged what it means to make pop music by abandoning all of the rules and redefining her sound from a place of unfettered creativity, candor, charisma, and confidence.

“You’re conditioned to follow the rules, especially when it comes to pop,” she states. “I got tired of the routine, what’s expected, what’s supposed to be, and what should be. When I threw those expectations out the window, I was more excited about the music. My heart was pulling me towards live instruments and very real lyrics. I was trying to tell my story as authentically as I could. Sometimes, it was more uplifting. Other times, it was more honest. Ultimately, I’ve never really felt closer to music than I do now.”

In order to get “closer to music,” Sabrina quite literally embraced her roots once again. Listening intently to a myriad of favorites, she dusted off old records by the likes of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, and Marvin Gaye. Emphasizing the inclusion of live instrumentation and stripped-back production, her artistry progressed in organic and understated fashion. She gave audiences a glimpse at her direction with the 2021 one-off “Skin,” which generated hundreds of millions of streams and became her first Billboard Hot 100 hit. However, it just scratched the surface of where Emails I Can’t Send would go as she held nothing back during the writing and recording process.

“I stopped sugarcoating things,” she confesses. “As a songwriter, I reached the point where it was more important for me to speak my truth than it is to worry about the perceptions and opinions of others. I didn’t want this to be anybody else’s album, but mine.”

Her story played out vividly on the album’s first official release “Skinny Dipping,” Co-written with Grammy® Award-nominated multiplatinum artists and songwriters Julia Michaels and JP Saxe, it showcased the unfiltered honesty at the heart of the album with its vivid recollections of running into an ex at a coffee shop. She performed it for the first time on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , while People highlighted how, “The single demonstrates a sense of closure from a past relationship.” However, she picked up the pace with the dancefloor-ready follow-up “Fast Times.” Driven by upbeat percussion and a dynamic vocal performance, Rolling Stone hailed it as a “sexy, playful pop song” and one of “The Best Songs of 2022.” However, the single “Vicious” cuts even deeper into the old wound of a failed romance. Her understated vocals peek through handclaps and a head-nodding guitar riff as she muses, “Everyone thinks you’re an angel, but shit I would probably use different wording.”

“Sonically, you’re able to hear me really closely, and it’s almost like I’m narrating the story to you,” she elaborates. “This is the personal side of the album. It’s as if I’m having a conversation. We’ve all had experiences with people we love so deeply who turn out to be different than we thought they were. It’s a really painful realization to come to terms with. A lot of times, we focus on the other side of the healing process and ignore the part where we’re filled with anger and resentment. I don’t touch on that side of myself too often, but it’s a huge part of my story over the past couple of years, so I thought it was important to start there on ‘Vicious’.”

Fittingly, she begins the album with the piano-laden title track “Emails I Can’t Send.” Between soft strings, her voice barely registers above a whisper as she warns, “Don’t make me cuss you out. Why’d you let me down? Don’t say sorry now.”

Whether it be the extreme dynamics of “Tornado Warnings” or the cheeky acoustic ponderances of “Bad For Business,” the album finds Sabrina at her most raw and real. This sentiment shines the brightest on the finale “Decode.” Her voice quakes with unfiltered feeling over delicately strummed guitar as her cadence alternates between hushed verses and a hypnotic hook.

“It reaches a place of acceptance,” she observes. “You’re not necessarily holding anger for the past, but you’re accepting if the situation was perfect, you wouldn’t be where you are now. You wouldn’t have grown or learned from it. You wouldn’t know how to take care of yourself in the future. Finally, you can move on.”

Since making her debut with Eyes Wide Open in 2015, Sabrina has evolved as a singer, songwriter, and performer on her own terms. Amassing over a billion streams, she has earned one platinum single, “Thumbs,” and two gold singles—“Sue Me” and “Why.” Beyond selling out shows on multiple continents, she has collaborated with Zara Larsson, Farruko, and Saweetie. Her dynamic filmography spans everything from her first leading role in the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival favorite The Short History of the Long Road to the #1 Netflix mega-hit Work It , which she produced. In 2022, she co-stars in the comedy thriller film Emergency (Amazon Prime), which premiered at Sundance Film Festival. Other major credits include Clouds and the Broadway production of Mean Girls . It’s no wonder Forbes touted her as a featured honoree on its “30 under 30” list.

Now, Emails I Can’t Send tells Sabrina’s story like never before. The album finds Sabrina refusing to take the easy way out, embracing her vulnerabilities and welcoming growth. The result is a deeply intimate look into the inner workings of her mind; her thoughts, feelings, and everything in between.

“There’s a huge message of self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, and imperfection,” she leaves off. “I’ve learned you can’t just skip to the part where you’re healed and everything’s okay. You have to go through it. I’m someone who likes to listen to music and get in my feels. Making that kind of record for me was really special. This is my own.”

She previously showered praise on Melbourne (after she herself was praised for pronouncing the city’s name correctly on stage). On Instagram, the star wrote: “Melbourne eras tour u are specialllll thank u for being so kind to us.”

During the Today appearance, she said she’s had a blast performing for such a “loving, happy, excited community,” during the Eras run and, “just being able to be here, like performing for technically the first time this weekend, has just made me want to come back ASAP.”
