Felicitously known as “Africa’s richest square mile”, Sandton is one of the more opulent and affluent areas of Johannesburg. A vibrant commercial and residential hub, Sandton delights in all given areas. The suburb was named after the two areas of Sandown and Bryanston and was long ago occupied by indigenous Tswana and Sotho people.

A visit to the suburb now, makes it incredibly hard to believe that a mere 50 years ago, it was just dust and farmland. Now, it is home to some of South Africa’s largest, multinational companies, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Nelson Mandela Square and a number of high-end retail and entertainment centres.

The area also has some of the most expensive real estate in the country; towering New York-style skyscrapers and sophisticated, five-star hotels. When you’ve shopped til you’ve dropped at Sandton City or Melrose Arch, take a stroll through Sandton Central Park – which is a spot of Eden in an, otherwise, concrete jungle. You can also find the Tuscan-inspired Montecasino in the suburb’s midst – for fun and games, fine dining and live entertainment.

Sandton is situated 15km north from Johannesburg and 30km from O.R Tambo International Airport.

What to do in Sandton

Sandton is a mecca for shopaholics – but there’s lots to do in the area. Here’s our top picks:

By car [ edit ].

From O.R. Tambo International Airport , after you exit the airport, follow R24 Johannesburg signs and the R24 to the Gillooly's Interchange, from here follow the N3 North towards Pretoria, take exit 124 (Sandton/M60 Marlboro Drive) turning left into Marlboro Drive, follow Marlboro Drive until the T-junction with Katherine Street, turn left into Katherine Street, and follow Katherine Street into Sandton.

From the M1, take exit 23 (Sandton/M40 Grayston Drive) or exit 26 (Sandton/M60 Marlboro Dr), and follow Marlboro Drive west until the T junction with Katherine Street (400 m), and turn left at Katherine Street into Sandton. From the N1, take exit 100 (Sandton/M9 Rivonia Road) and follow Rivonia Road south towards Sandton or exit 95 (Sandton/R511 William Nicol Drive) and follow south until it intersects with Sandton Drive, where you turn left. Get around [ edit ]

Map

By metered taxi [ edit ]

Taxis can be found at entrance 12 to Sandton City. Metered cabs can also be hired by calling Safecab on +27 861 66-55-66 or Sandton Taxi Cabs on +2711 039 4402. It is illegal for metered taxis to be hailed as is seen in many other cities (e.g. in New York City). Passengers may catch taxis only if booked in advance(in person or by telephone), the only exception being in demarcated metered taxi zones.

Bus [ edit ]

Several main Metrobus routes serve the Sandton area, running regularly during the day in 30 min to 60 min intervals, as well as in the early evening. The 5C also runs regularly on weekends, including the normal early evening service. The 5C runs along Oxford Road and connects many important tourist attractions, including Sandton City, The Zone@Rosebank, and The Mall of Rosebank. Contact Metrobus on +27 11 375-5555 (Ext. 6) for more information on routes and timetables Metrobus is by far one of the safest and cheapest methods of getting around Sandton, and the City of Johannesburg. It must be noted, however, that Metrobus is not an alternative to private (hired) transport.

By Train [ edit ]

  • Park Station  is Johannesburg's central station and is in the city center between Rissik (west), Wolmarans (north), Wanderers (east) and De Villiers (south) streets, it occupies several blocks. Whilst the station itself is quite safe, the areas around it may not be. Be careful and try to organise onward transport prior to arrival. All long-distance  Spoornet  trains are quite safe, as are most  MetroRail  trains. The best is, prior to using any public transport to ask local people.
  • Spoornet  is a freight train company but they do have a branch that offers a passenger service called: Shosholoza Meyl. There are 8 primary routes that link South Africa's cities with smaller towns along each route. There are regular inter-city trains to destinations all over the country, including Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth, East London, Pietermaritzburg, Mbombela and Polokwane. Passengers can chose to travel in the tourist class where there is an option of either a coupe that can accommodate two people or a compartment that can seat four people. If traveling over night these compartments become bedrooms. Another option is the economy class which of course is cheaper, with chairs that can recline but not, alas, turn into beds. There is dinning car on the trains where you can buy food. If you are traveling in a coupe or compartment then there is a trolley service available saving you form ever having to leave your compartment
  • MetroRail   [98]  operates frequent commuter trains to many suburbs and outlying towns. As Metrorail operates services in several separate cities, for operational purposes it is subdivided into five regions. The Gauteng region is the one entailing the greater Johannesburg area. Trains run from Johannesburg and Germiston outwards to Springs, Pretoria, Soweto and Krugersdorp.
  • Gautrain   [99]  is a first-world-quality commuter train with two lines, namely Johannesburg-Hatfield and Sandton-OR Tambo airport. Interchange is at Sandton or Marlboro. All journeys are paid using a non-refundable R15 gold card. Gautrain has much fewer stops and shorter travel times than MetroRail but is also significantly more expensive. For example, using Gautrain Johannesburg-Pretoria takes 35 minutes and costs R46 (excluding card purchase), whereas with MetroRail it costs R9 but takes 1 hour 40 minutes. Gautrain is very secure - lots of cameras and guards on the trains and platforms.

The Sandton Region, Johannesburg

Millions of South African safaris, shopping sprees, and beach holidays start in the epicentre of Johannesburg , where many of the most glamorous hotels in Sandton and other areas can be found.

Did you know? Once you've booked your hotels or accommodation in Sandton , explore the destination pages for info on attractions, activities and things to do when you visit Sandton in Gauteng.

In the square of a huge shopping mall in Sandton stands the six metre high statue of Nelson Mandela (just his shoes are a metre in length), sculpted by Kobus Hattingh and Jacob Maponyane. The statue is surrounded by restaurants, a public library and a theatre. More than 10 000 businesses operate in the area.

It is hard to believe that this sophisticated district, home to the top investment banks, financial consultants, the Johannesburg stock exchange, and one of the biggest convention centres on the continent, was but mere sandy horse trails where the ‘mink and manure set’ lived on wealthy, large estates 50 years ago - small wonder it is known as one of the most opulent areas in Johannesburg.

Sandton started life at the beginning of the century as the suburb of gentlemen – properties were no smaller than one morgen (just less than one hectare). Life has fundamentally not changed, although the landscape has radically altered.

Gone are the farms and the sedate way of existence for the white upper class, to be replaced by glass and chrome buildings, and South Africa’s emerging black middle-class: the ‘empowerment kugels’, according to author Sarah Britten, do lunch not in Soweto but in Sandton.

Did you know? Once you've booked your hotel or Johannesburg accommodation , explore the suburb and destination pages below for info on attractions, activities and things to do when you visit Sandton.

Known as ‘Africa’s richest square mile’, Sandton has headed upward with a barrage of Manhattan-style skyscrapers that function as landmarks throughout Johannesburg, particularly Sandton City’s pyramid-style rooftop. Visit Nelson Mandela Square , various art galleries, or go on a personal walking tour that takes in 29 Sandton landmarks and stops off at various restaurants. To view a map see » Sandton Map .

The South African tourism industry is gearing up to achieve its full recovery this year. The sector has its sight on hosting some of the major international events from this year up to 2029 with a total revenue of R1.2 billion.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has launched the 2024 edition of Africa’s leading business events tourism trade show, named Meetings Africa. The event which is scheduled to take place in Sandton between the 26th and 28th February 2024 will host over 3 000 African business owners including exhibitors and buyers.

Thousands of tourism practitioners are expected to gather in Sandton in the coming month for the 2024 Meetings Africa event from 51 countries including key source markets such as USA, India, Kenya, Brazil, the UK and Germany amongst others.

De Lille officially launched the event with expectations of the Meetings Africa 2024 building on economic successes from last year’s event.

“Last year we attracted 273 hosted buyers and 355 exhibitors from 22 African countries and welcomed over 2 900 delegates and the economic impact the meetings Africa 2023 made a substantial contribution of R388.5 million to the South African economy and in addition to verified figures shows also that Meetings Africa 2023 created and maintained 753 jobs within the economy,”

This is an annual multi stakeholder event that speaks to economic growth, with South Africa through the SA National Convention Bureau and the SA business event industry submitting 63 bids to host international meetings and exhibitions in the country between 2024 and 2029 valued at over R1. 2 billion.

“I was encouraged by today’s conversations because you didn’t have just the representative from National entity talking about Meetings Africa and the role of the event in creating a positive economic impact, you had provinces and our Tourism partners from the private sector and the importance of that, we are then able to look forward, not a once off commitment to a singular year. So, when you talk 2029 it’s what is the strategic vision for meetings Africa for the longest term and for me it’s creating a MICE industry that is long term and sustainable,” says SA Tourism Acting CEO Nombulelo Guliwe.

The launch also saw a panel discussion amongst stakeholders with small businesses calling for an inclusive event that will ensure their maximum participation.

“What my expectation is for Meetings Africa 2024 is to ensure that we finally get to a space where an inclusive economy is something that is prioritised primarily by this I mean not leaving the youth behind, I think at a macro level we all understand that unemployment in South Africa is very high and particularly affects the young people of South Africa, so one is to see demonstrations of market access to the event, it keels but also to the ecosystem that exists post all of that,” says SizweSihle Dlamini, Entrepreneur.

The Tourism Minister says South Africa’s Tourism numbers have picked up at 96 % with the ministry anticipating a full recovery in 2024 and the minister believes key to this will be the easing of visa regulations through an air access strategy that will be presented to government in March.

Government and Tourism role players looking to generate substantial social and inclusive economic impacts through the 2024 meetings Africa event, create well needed jobs and ensure a sustainable development of the tourism value chain on the continent and globally.

Harrowing video shows elephant charging truck during African safari, killing American tourist

S hocking video captured the moment a 5-ton bull elephant in Zambia charged at a safari vehicle — flipping it over several times and killing an 80-year-old American woman during an expedition.

The unidentified woman was among six tourists with the group Wilderness Zambia who were out on a photography tour Saturday when they came under attack by the crazed beast, the Telegraph reported.

“At around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning the six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant,” Wilderness Zambia CEO Keith Vincent said in a statement.

Distressing footage captured by a passenger shows the elephant barreling toward the vehicle as it cruises along a bush-lined road before suddenly stopping when its path was blocked.

The passenger continues to record as the animal lunges at the vehicle and flips it over.

The elderly woman later died of her injuries while another woman remains hospitalized.

The other four guests were treated for minor injuries after the violent attack.

“Our guides are all extremely well-trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Vincent said.

Kafue National Park’s management sent a helicopter to the scene to evacuate the victims.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident,” Vincent added.

The group was reportedly staying at the luxurious Lufupa Camp in the Kafue National Park, the largest game reserve in Africa.

African Parks, which manages the park, also controls 22 other wildlife sanctuaries in Africa.

The tour group was making arrangements to return the woman’s body to the US, the Nigerian Bulletin reported.
