The recent releases by Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, Spread the Love (2010), Just for Today (2013), and Good News (2014), Father’s Day (2015), Maxwell Street (2016), and The Luckiest Man (2017), Beyond The Blue Door (2019) and Rise Up (2020) all debuted on the top ten Billboard Blues charts and received wide critical acclaim. Mercy Me (2022) is Earl’s 14th album in partnership with Stony Plain and his 28th career album.

Ronnie Earl has played alongside such legends as Hubert Sumlin, Earl King, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Kim Wilson and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers Band and many others, including, B.B. King, who said about Ronnie, “I feel the respect and affection for him that a father feels for his son. He is one of the most serious blues guitarists you can find today. He makes me proud.”

The Broadcasters

Dave Limina, Hammond B3 & Piano

Dave Limina is a Professor in the Piano Department at Berklee College of Music, where he received the Most Valuable Contribution to the Performance Curriculum Award in 2001 for his work in creating and developing the Hammond organ program. As a keyboardist, composer, and arranger, Dave has performed with Gloria Estefan, Duke Robillard, Courage Brothers, Mark Murphy, Lori McKenna, Mighty Sam McClain, Kenny Neal, Catie Curtis, Freedy Johnston, Martha Reeves, Brooke Benton, Toy Caldwell, Felix Cavalieri, Steve Forbert, and The RB Funkestra with Fred Wesley and Eric Krasno. Also Grammy winning songwriters, Robert Lee Castleman, Gary Nicholson, Paula Cole, Mark Walker and Steve Leslie. He has been the keyboardist/conductor for the first national touring company of the Broadway musical Rent. He received Boston Music Award nominations for his work with Courage Brothers, Ronnie Earl, and Mighty Sam McClain. He played keyboards on Michelle Willson’s Wake Up Call, which was a Boston Music Awards winner in 2001 for “Best Blues Album”. He is the author of “Hammond Organ Complete” (Hal Leonard), and the instructional video/DVD “Accelerate Your Keyboard Playing” (Rittor Music).

Diane Blue, Vocals

Boston’s Diane Blue is a soul-stirring vocalist, skillful harmonica player and a crowd-pleasing entertainer. Ms. Blue is the first female member of Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, prominently featured on the band’s albums since 2013, and has received rave reviews on her vocals and performance. Voted “Outstanding Female Singer” in The Blues Audience 2015 & 2011 Readers’ Poll, Ms. Blue is a soulful and sassy performer with a strong and energetic delivery, serving up her own spin on soul, blues and R&B. She won the 2010 Massachusetts Blues Challenge, earning the honor of competing at the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. She was nominated “Best Blues/R&B Act” and “Best Female Vocalist” in 2007 by the Providence Phoenix and also nominated “Best Local Blues Act” by Motif Magazine in 2007. Diane has shared the stage with many greats including Luther “Guitar Jr.” Johnson, Irma Thomas, Toni Lynn Washington and the late Big Jack Johnson of Clarksdale, Mississippi who called Diane a “monster on the harp.

Forrest Padgett, Drums

Forrest Padgett joined the Broadcasters August 2016. Forrest is a highly regarded and respected drummer in the Boston area and we welcome him to the group! Forrest has played drums professionally for over forty years, performing with such artists as The Radio Kings, Brain Templeton, Paul Rishell, Duke Robillard, Little Charlie Baty, Charlie Musselwhite, Luther Guitar Jr. Johnson, Lavern Baker, the Radio Kings, East of Eden, and more. He attended Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY, and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He graduated from Framingham State University with a B.A. in English.

Paul Kochanski, Electric and Upright Bass

Paul Kochanski is a Grammy-nominated electric and upright bass player who brings his solid time and feel to the current Broadcasters lineup. He was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where he began his performing career at age 14. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston before becoming immersed in that city’s vibrant original music scene. In 1990, he co-founded the Swinging Steaks – an Americana/alt.country group that landed a recording contract with legendary Capricorn Records, leading to national tours with Los Lobos, The Band and as headliners. Around that time, Paul became involved in the Boston blues scene, where he first had the good fortune to perform with Forrest Padgett, the Broadcaster’s current drummer. As the Steaks’ activity waned, Paul began working as a sideman for many New England-based singer-songwriters, and has recorded and/or performed with over 100 artists including Alastair Moock (with whom Paul shares his Grammy nomination), the legendary “Big Al” Anderson (formerly of NRBQ) and Lori McKenna (appearing with her on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert February 2017). Paul’s instinct to serve the song and remain in the moment makes him a natural fit with Ronnie and the Broadcasters. He had subbed a few shows with the group over the years and was proud to contribute to the band’s “Spread the Love” album, playing and co-writing “Blues for Dr. Donna.” Honored to be including in the elite club of musicians who have been named Broadcasters, Paul looks forward to writing the next chapter in the history of this illustrious band.

Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters Deliver a Loud and Clear Shout-Out of ‘Mercy Me’

American Blues Scene Staff

Ronnie Earl , a four-time Blues Music Award winner as “Guitar Player of the Year,” follows up the critical and commercial success of his last album, Rise Up , with Mercy Me , a new set of wondrous music with his long-time band, The Broadcasters, on  April 15 via Stony Plain Records. Mercy Me will also be released later this summer on vinyl LP.

ronnie earl tour 2022

Mercy Me is Earl’s 14 th album in partnership with Stony Plain and his 28 th career album. The 12-song Mercy Me features Dave Limina on piano and Hammond B3, Diane Blue on vocals, Forrest Padgett on drums, Paul Kochanski on electric and upright bass, all backing Earl’s amazingly soulful guitar work. Guest musicians include Anthony Geraci, piano; Mark Earley, baritone sax; Mario Perrett, tenor sax; Peter Ward, guitar; and Tess Ferraiolo, vocals. The album was produced by Earl, recorded and mixed by Huck Bennert and mastered at Sound Mirror Studio by Mark Donahue.

I titled the album  ‘Mercy Me’  as I was thinking about all the things going on in the world. We need to have more mercy for the world, for other people and for ourselves. I love playing the blues, and the session was so enjoyable. The band was focused, and we came together as one.

Earl has a unique, beautiful, easily identifiable tone that comes from within and not from a piece of equipment, such as a pedal, which he has never used. Music critic Jim Hynes has called Ronnie, “The John Coltrane of the Guitar;” B.B. King referred to Ronnie as one of his sons; and writer Ron Weinstock said of Ronnie that he “is a master of tonal dynamics, phrasing, and solo construction. Earl builds solos like smoldering coals in a charcoal grill that bursts into flames when fat drips down.”

The album’s even-dozen tunes include a diverse mix of originals and unique covers of songs from such legends as Muddy Waters, John Coltrane, Dave Mason and Percy Mayfield.

“Blow Wind Blow” is a little guitar tribute to Muddy Waters; My other love is “Alabama,” which is a tribute to John Coltrane. It’s different from his, but sadly the racism he wrote about in 1963 is still going on today. “Blues for Ruthie Foster” is a nice little acoustic tune with my longtime friend Peter Ward. It’s in the vein of a little bit Robert Johnson, a little bit Robert Junior. I had a chance to sit in with Ruthie Foster this past year and she is astonishing. We did “Soul Searching,” an older tune of mine, first recorded in 1988. I wanted to try it with this band. It has some horns on it and it came out nicely – with sparse guitar. “Only You Know and I Know” is a famous tune sung by Bonnie Bramlett. We’ve never done it and Diane Blue is great on everything. Many years ago, Levon Helm was playing at BB Kings in Memphis, and he called both Bonnie Bramlett and me up – and we sat in together. I loved playing with her, and this song is a sweet reminder of that day. “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” is one of my wife Donna’s favorite songs. It’s an R&B that Jackie Wilson sang, and I recorded it for Donna.

Earl, born Ronald Horvath, has led a storied music career beginning with his early years in Boston while studying at Boston University. He graduated with a dual degree in Education and Special Education in 1975. Ronnie would teach for a few years while playing guitar at night before joining and touring with John Nicholas and The Rhythm Rockers, Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, Roomful of Blues, and finally with his band, The Broadcasters.

Ronnie has shared the stage with B.B. King, Otis Rush, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Albert Collins, Big Mama Thornton, Etta James, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers, Jimmie Vaughan, Kim Wilson, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Leonard Bernstein, among many others.

An authorized biography of Ronnie’s life, Beautiful Child , is in progress and includes stories from Ronnie as well as one hundred of his friends and colleagues who have walked alongside him.

Perhaps being the son of two Holocaust survivors has given Ronnie Earl a keen insight into the human condition, which has manifested itself in his musical delivery. As Ronnie celebrates more than 30-plus years of sobriety, he’s often quietly devoted his time and donated concert proceeds to help people affected by substance abuse. And as someone who once studied to be a special education teacher, he recalls with particular fondness a 10-year period when he volunteered at LifeLinks Inc., a nonprofit in Chelmsford, Mass. that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“What Ronnie pulls from wood, wire and old Fender amplifiers,” music writer Ted Drozdowski once wrote, “isn’t so much notes as the sound of the human heart beating with you, crying under the world’s weight or acknowledging the inevitability of another sunrise.”

Perhaps being the son of two Holocaust survivors has given Ronnie Earl a keen insight into the human condition, which has manifested itself in his musical delivery. Review: ‘Rise Up’ Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters

Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters Rise Up album cover

By Mike O’Cull

Four-time Blues Music Award-winning guitarist Ronnie Earl gives the world another set of blockbuster blues on his new album Rise Up . The record comes out September 11th, 2020 thanks to Stony Plain Records and contains tracks literally recorded in Earl’s living room as well as live cuts from a Live at Daryl’s House Club performance. The 15 songs here were created to both heal and move the bodies and souls of Earl’s listeners and clearly convey the passion he’s always had for the power of the blues. Earl and his band, Dave Limina on keys, Diane Blue on vocals, Paul Kochanski on bass, and Forrest Padgett on drums, recorded the “studio” material in March just before the COVID-19 pandemic began while Earl was home recovering from back surgery. The Daryl’s House Club selections are from a gig there in January 2019.

Ronnie Earl has been at the forefront of the blues world since he first appeared in Boston bars in the 1970s. His Strat-into-a-Super Reverb tone has become legendary along with his concern for the human condition. He’s the son of two Holocaust survivors who is also celebrating 30 years of sobriety this year. He’s intuitively focused on the pain people suffer, especially from depression and human indignity, and, in 2020, Earl felt the need to respond urgently to Coronavirus and racial strife. He touches on Black Lives Matter, George Floyd, Native American issues, and the general state of our modern existence on Rise Up , drawing from the deep well of emotion that has always driven his music.

Rise Up begins with a graceful solo acoustic rendition of the traditional “I Shall Not Be Moved” that comes directly from Earl’s house to your ears. Ronnie’s touch is always masterful and he puts this tune down with genuine emotion and the economy of motion only a fully-matured artist can conjure. Earl has no need to showboat at this point in his timeline and simply lets the melody and the mood of the song do all the talking.

The live electric shuffle “Higher Love” follows and takes us to Daryl’s stage just in time for Ronnie and the band to school us all. Diane Blue’s voice is emphatic and strong over the easy mid-tempo shuffle and Earl’s tone and playing are perfect and beyond reproach. His rhythmic comping is as compelling as his lead work and his ever-present soulfulness is in full effect. The band shadows and supports Earl and Blue beautifully and makes each moment of the song one to be savored.

“Blues For George Floyd” is a new, mournful slow blues instrumental that rings of sadness and respect all at once and shows Earl at his most eloquent. His phrasing and bends are confident and wise and Earl tells us how he feels the best way he knows how. His live version of Fenton Robinson’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is” is funky, raw, and gives Diane Blue more time to shine on the microphone. Earl’s reverb-soaked tone nails the classic Fender sound of the mid-1960s and will turn every guitarist listening Fiesta Red with envy.

“Black Lives Matter” is another expressive slow blues that hovers in the intrinsic pain of this year. Dave Limina’s ghostly piano playing sets much of the mood of this unusual talking blues voiced again by Diane Blue and Earl’s guitar work is what pushes it into your consciousness. “Navajo Blues,” “Big Town Playboy,” and “Lord Protect My Child” are equally amazing and will pay big dividends on your investment of listening time. Ronnie Earl remains a true master of blues music and is one of the most heartfelt musicians working today in any genre. Give Rise Up a chance and it will make this year seem just a bit better and brighter.
