Before you travel, be sure to purchase travel insurance to cover unexpected events such as trip cancellations, medical expenses, lost luggage, and other incidents associated with travel. Check what your health insurance covers when you're out of the country. Many Medicare supplemental insurance plans do not provide coverage outside of the US. Travel insurance provides this much-needed coverage.

Although most people dream of traveling during retirement, according to a report,  Journey to Healthy Aging: Planning for Travel in Retirement , only 18% of Americans have specifically saved for retirement travel. This means that most Americans will need to be creative to fulfill their wanderlust after retirement.

Some ways you can save on travel and vacation costs include:

• Group trips : Because travel agencies purchase tickets in bulk, they can pass the savings on to you. Group travel is generally led by expert guides steering you towards the best things to do while at specific locales. If you're traveling solo, it's a great way to do so without feeling alone.
• Off-season travel : Since you're retired and no longer tied to a time clock, you have the flexibility of traveling during off-peak travel times. This allows you to take advantage of lower rates. Flights on Monday through Wednesday, especially those during the late morning or afternoon, cost less. Off-season travel gives you further savings on accommodations and attractions. Three great places to find discount flights are The Flight Deal, Secret Flying, and HolidayPirates.
• Honey travel : According to Travel+Leisure, Honey generally offers hotel discounts better than those you'll find on other booking sites.  Honey is a free service (a browser extension) that automatically searches for discounts and coupon codes.
• Senior discounts : Many organizations and retailers offer senior discounts, so be sure to inquire about them as you make reservations and as you travel. Members of AARP , AAA, and veterans' groups can receive discounts at hotels, airlines, tour providers, and car rental agencies. The National Park Service sells an $80 (plus a $10 handling fee) for a lifetime senior pass to those 62 and older. Some airlines offer a limited number of senior fares. Many hotels offer senior discounts .
• Stay at hostels : Hostels offer affordable places to stay when traveling. Hostels are popular with younger travelers, so be prepared to run into a lot of partiers during your stay. But as one senior shared, if there's too much activity in a hostel, they won't have lost much money should they decide to move on. Sites to help locate a hostel include Hostels.com, HostelWorld.com, Hosteling International, and Hostel Bookers.
• Stay at an Airbnb : An Airbnb offers someone's home as a place to stay instead of a hotel. Accommodations may be an entire home or someone's spare room. You can find unique accommodations ranging from a castle to an igloo.
• Additional resources : Kiplinger.com provides a list of sites for the best travel deals to help you save money. Cruise Sheet and Vacations To Go are great places to locate discounts on cruises, although they may not be senior-specific.  Intrepid, Kiwi Experience (New Zealand), Context Travel (walking tours), and BusAbout are great places to find discounts on tours and excursions, especially last minute. But again, they may not be senior-specific.

No matter what kind of organization or group you choose to travel with, it’s important to plan sufficiently for your trip. If you have special needs, touch base with the group to ensure they can accommodate your needs. • Senior travel clubs and groups :  Senior travel clubs/groups organize trips for members, offering vacation packages at great rates. It also provides a wonderful way for solo vacationers to travel with a group of like-minded seniors.  ElderTreks, Row Adventures, and Walking the World specialize in adventure travel, something many older adults are searching for. Before joining a club, be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau and read their literature, especially the fine print, to ensure the group you have chosen is reputable.
• Educational travel : Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization and was once known as Elderhostel International .  It offers thousands of affordable learning adventures for adults, both nationally and internationally. Some scholarships are available for those who don't have the financial means to participate.
• Voluntourism : A volunteer vacation allows you to give back in a multitude of ways and enjoy various cultures, depending upon the organization you volunteer and travel with. The trips aren't free, but they are rewarding and provide an economical way to visit a particular area. National and international opportunities are available. From around-the-world-cruises to iconic treks — here are TPG's best retirement trips

When Mary Krewsun, 65, retired as a physician assistant, she set a goal of traveling because now she has the time. During five days, she walked for 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) along the ancient pilgrim route known as the Camino de Santiago, which culminates in northwest Spain .

"I had heard about the Camino from a cousin who did it, and I was like, 'I've got to do that; that's going on my bucket list,'" said Krewsun.

She and two friends skipped the hostel route and booked stays in boutique properties, with someone bringing their bags from place to place. "I didn't want to sleep in a dorm with 15 men snoring," Krewsun said.

It was the trip of a lifetime, even if her feet sometimes hurt. "I figured, 'You better do this now while you still can,' and I am glad I did," she shared.

Krewsun is not alone in her retirement goal of seeing more of the world. During the pandemic, retirees, like everyone else, delayed travel. Whether it's a close-to-home road trip or a once-in-a-lifetime international extravaganza, retirees are playing a huge role in the travel surge that's expected to continue through summer 2023.

A majority of adults (62%) age 50 and over will take at least one vacation in 2023, and most will take between three and four trips, according to a recent survey by AARP.

You have time, and you have money saved, but where to go? Here are some retirement trip ideas to get you started.

Around-the-world cruise

Cruises of two months or more are selling swiftly, so much so that there are cruise lines offering world cruises for the first time. The flashiest is Royal Caribbean , with a record-breaking nine-month itinerary that covers 65 countries on seven continents. The inaugural ship departs in December 2023 .

The idea for such cruises is seeing the world in one fell swoop, though often the term "world" is used loosely. Most don't visit every continent but combine several iconic places. You might, for instance, cruise from Southampton in the United Kingdom to Dubai, Singapore, Melbourne and Cape Town on Cunard , which offers 100-plus day world cruises each year on ships that include Queen Mary 2. In 2024, Queen Mary 2 will visit Europe, Africa and Australasia on a 108-night World Voyage.

Upscale Oceania Cruises has Around the World in 180 Days itineraries, while ultra-luxury line Silversea introduced the concept of a soft-adventure, expedition world cruise from pole to pole. If you're considering a world cruise, be ready. Start studying the possible itineraries. Then, learn when bookings will open for sale. They tend to sell out fast, sometimes even in a day.

Family reunion

For retirees determined to get to know the grandkids better, family reunion trips afford bonding opportunities and can become the stuff of family lore — as in, "Remember when grandpa thought he caught a big fish and it was just a clump of seaweed?"

Depending on how you, the kids and grandkids like to travel, you might take the family to a Disney resort, book a condo at a ski destination , stay at a dude ranch, or charter a yacht in the Caribbean .

You might choose a stay at an old-fashioned resort such as the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods , New Hampshire, or the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, which includes an excuse to dress up for dinner — and an opportunity to distract the grandkids from their iPads with old-school activities like lawn games.

A good plan is to throw out a few destination ideas and see where your family lands.

Follow your passion

Retirement is a time when you might want to pursue your specific interests, and some of those interests may prove great themes for travel. If your goal is improving your golf game, plan that dream trip to St. Andrews Old Course, Royal Dornoch and others which are among the best courses in Scotland .

Improve your sipping skills on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail or on a wine-themed river cruise through Bordeaux . Or splurge on a luxury driving trip, such as a six-day Porsche Travel Experience driving a Porsche 911 on mountain passes across the French Alps — a package that includes a stay in a luxury Alpine "igloo" and a helicopter flight over Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain.

Walk the world's great treks

You might, like retiree Krewsun, want to look at a shortened "Camino in Style" hike along the famous 500-mile Camino Frances pilgrim trail, which she booked through Macs Adventures . If you're super fit, do the whole thing over some 35 days.

There are other amazing hikes to consider in destinations around the world. They include the moderately strenuous Kungsleden (The King's Trail), about 273 miles through northern Sweden, or the highly strenuous 26-mile Inca Trail, gaining 13,838 feet in elevation, over four days, to the mystical Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. Companies such as Wildlife Trekking and Country Walkers have an array of organized group treks.

Book a bike trip

Appropriate for active retirees, bike tours run the gamut from leisurely to extreme. You'll want to carefully choose your level and route. On the easy end, companies such as Backroads and VBT now have the option on select tours in the U.S. and Europe of using e-bikes.

You may pedal or e-bike through Switzerland, Germany and France, for instance, on VBT's Black Forest and the Alsace Wine Route itinerary. If you're looking for a challenge, a Backroads trip through the Canadian Rockies, from Banff to Jasper National Park, allows experienced cyclists to opt on select days for Level 4 or 5.

While the Level 2 members of your group might do 22 miles near scenic Lake Louise, Level 5 that day is an 86-mile ride with a 5,800-foot elevation gain. Both companies also have well-planned self-guide bike tours you can do at your own pace.

Live like a local

Since you've got time, consider planting yourself in one place for several weeks, rather than doing a fly-by of various destinations. Staying in an apartment or house, cooking some of your own meals, shopping at markets, mingling with locals and immersing yourself in the local scene is a rewarding experience — never mind that you might hear references to "the Americans" as you walk down the main drag of a small town in Italy.

Before Airbnb and Vrbo, it was harder to find a decent place to stay in, say, bohemian Le Marais or along the glitzy Amalfi Coast. That's not the case anymore. Plug-in your dates and how many rooms you need, requesting high-speed internet, a washer/dryer, or whatever you want. Carefully read the ratings and reviews of previous travelers to compare options and you're good to go.

Take that once in a lifetime adventure

Perhaps you've put off that longer "bucket list" adventure trip to see penguins in South Georgia and Antarctica , or to go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef , or maybe see the Big Five on a safari in Africa — all because you haven't been able to get the time off from work to do it. What's stopping you now?

Closer to home, Alaska is a destination that you'll want to take the time to explore on land and sea, for a minimum of two weeks but probably more, unless you expect to return again at a later date.

Go on a road trip

A big road trip is something else you've put off because of time constraints. Consider such extraordinary drives as a national parks route through Arizona and Utah , a plan to see California from San Francisco to San Diego, or a 600-mile journey on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Another drive is on Route 66, perhaps a two-week, 2,400-mile trip from Chicago to Santa Monica, lingering at state and national parks, trading posts and such iconic sights as the Milk Bottle Grocery in Oklahoma City and Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas.

Another must-do multi-day drive is the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway – the roadway through Virginia and North Carolina that the National Park Service refers to as " America's Favorite Drive. " Farther afield is the 825-mile Ring Road that circles Iceland.

Bottom line

You're retired. Now is the time to go for it.

Here are a few senior travel groups around Atlanta.

Seniors on the Go Travel

This Lawrenceville-based travel planning company specializes in motorcoach travel. It’s for people 50 and older who love group trips. In addition to day and overnight trips, Seniors on the Go Travel also hosts fly-in tours and cruises. Some trips include Austria, Germany and Switzerland in 2022. A tour of the Great Lakes in Michigan, Illinois and Canada is planned for 2022.

Ageless Adventures

This Stockbridge travel group focuses on travelers over 55. Ageless Adventures concentrates on day trips and international travel. Explore Costa Rica in January 2022. Or spend that spring in Ireland.

50+ Women’s Travel and Social Group 2021 and beyond

Available on the Meetup app and website, this Marietta group for women is virtual for now.

10 Tips for Traveling Solo After Retirement

Here are my top tips for senior travelers exploring the world on their own.

As a travel journalist, baby boomer, and an enthusiastic fan of seeing as much of the world as I can, I’ve flown, cruised, and driven a few million miles over the past 50 years or so. I’ve traveled with couples, friends, journalist groups, my husband, and most recently, I’ve taken a few trips on my own. 

While at some point in my life, I may have eschewed the idea of solo travel, I now find it a very pleasant way to go. For others like me who still have the energy to schlep through airports, the strength to carry a packed suitcase, the patience to spend 12 hours strapped into an airplane seat, and the curiosity to see new places, solo travel can be an exciting experience. 

I understand that others of my generation, and even younger folks, prefer to satisfy their urge to see the world by signing up with group travel companies that plan their itineraries, book their flights, reserve their hotel rooms, and arrange their meals and sightseeing tours. And I do recognize that certain trips, like adventure travels, are best managed in groups. You can even travel solo and join a group for a taste of both.

But I suggest taking a truly solo trip for the exhilarating experience of feeling independent, free to wander, and open to seeing for yourself what’s around the next corner. Here are some suggestions for making the most of your solo trips after retirement.

Do your research.

After deciding on my destination, I make the basic arrangements for flights and hotels. Some solo travelers like to play it by ear without making room reservations in advance — part of the adventure for them — but I suggest at least booking a room for the first night. We all arrive a bit tired, and it’s pleasant and safe to have a destination to start with. As far as flights, airfares vary by day of the week, airline, and connections, so it’s worth spending some time researching to save a few dollars on the flights. The same goes for hotels. Check booking sites and compare their deals by contacting the hotel directly.

Choose the right tour for you.

Picking the right tour for your needs can make seeing the top sights easy and stress-free. On a trip to Rome, I naturally wanted to see the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums. So do thousands of others every day, especially during the peak travel months. I signed up with City Wonders for their morning tour when I learned that the company’s official Vatican Museums partnership enables their groups to use a special no-wait entrance. (Even skip-the-line groups often wait up to an hour.)

I recently spent a week in London on my own, and I booked a walking tour of London’s West End with Lookup London . A private tour fit my schedule, and we visited the theater district, Oxford Street, and St. James’s Church (a Bridgerton filming location) where an afternoon piano recital was taking place. I loved having my own tour guide, but I also enjoy small groups where there’s interaction among the guests and a chance to meet other travelers.

Seek out new experiences.

By new experiences, I’m not suggesting bungee jumping or ziplining across a rainforest canopy, although I know many senior travelers who would strap in without hesitation. And while I admire them for it, I’m thinking along the lines of a cooking class that includes visiting a market, shopping for ingredients, and then cooking with an entertaining chef, as I once did in Florence.

In London, I visited the posh Burlington Arcade, one of London’s most historic shopping destinations. A Beadle in a delightfully British uniform greeted me with a bit of information about the arcade. From there, I went to cosmetics boutique Code 8 , where a personalized lipstick shade was designed and created for me. Then, my next new experience was having my boots polished by a charming gentleman as I sat on a vintage shoeshine stand and watched shoppers walk by. I know — it’s not exactly skydiving, but they were a few of my novel experiences. You can choose your own.

Make a to-do list.

In wonderful destinations like Rome, Paris, or London, it’s easy to make a long list of places you want to see. Sometimes, it’s just not possible to do everything, so you may need to prioritize to be practical. “Save something for the next time,” is what I always say. 

If you’re a foodie whose “to-do” list involves restaurants, it’s advisable to make reservations well in advance, especially if you’re after Michelin-starred dining spots or those receiving lots of attention. Your list will also help you decide where and when to go based on location. In London, I combined a matinee at a West End theater with dinner at Sketch , a unique restaurant I wanted to experience.  

Keep an eye on your cell phone’s battery.

I relied on GPS to guide me around London on my recent trip, and I strolled around with the confidence of a local — until that low battery warning appeared. After a day of taking photos, texting, and using Google Maps, I had just about drained my phone. Fortunately, it was time to hop into one of those adorable black cabs, have a chat with the driver, and return to my hotel.

Now, I charge up and carry a battery, knowing that a day of sightseeing is about all my phone can handle. When you want to call an Uber or find directions back to your hotel, you don’t want to be stuck with no phone service.

Let someone at home know your travel plans.

For your security and for peace of mind for the folks at home, let someone know your itinerary. You don’t have to compromise your independence, but it’s advisable to let a friend or relative know what you’re up to. I leave my husband with a printed copy of my itinerary for my trips, whether I’m on a group trip with other travel writers or traveling on my own. And, of course, I text or call every day, although I admit once in a while I’m having such a good time that I forget. 

If your home will be empty while you’re traveling, hold off on posting Instagram photos that let the world know you’re out of town. Better to be safe and share your experiences when you get home.

Be polite, but don’t be a pushover.

For your safety, always be aware of your surroundings and alert to what’s happening around you. If you’re uncomfortable in a place or with someone who approaches you, go with your instinct and get away. Sometimes travelers feel pressured to take a tour, go to a club, or accept a handout from someone on the street who then strikes up a conversation. If it doesn’t feel right, just move on. I know we don’t want to be rude or offend someone, but your personal safety is foremost, and you’ve had enough experience by this time to trust your gut.

And beware of pickpockets and scams.

AARP warns of the creative ways criminals take advantage of travelers. We’re distracted or perhaps overly trusting of strangers, so being prepared will help you avoid becoming a victim of theft.

On my first small group trip as a journalist, my wallet was stolen from my purse at a major tourist site in a European city. I won’t say exactly where because this can happen anywhere, even at your local shopping mall. I was unwise to carry my cash, credit cards, and wallet in a purse on my arm, but at least my passport was in the hotel safe at the time. Now I carry only what I need for the day in a secure crossbody bag or a hidden wallet which I use occasionally. Others prefer to use money belts for cash.

Be prepared.

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but it’s good advice. Before you travel overseas, obtain some of the local currency, including small denominations. You might encounter places that only accept cash, like a small shop or place where you just want coffee and a snack. Also, you’ll want to tip hotel staff who help with your bags or provide other services. 

While you’re traveling to experience new places, it helps to know a bit about them before you go. I recently went to a small town in Italy — so small, in fact, that there were no taxis, no Uber, and no way to get to the nearby beach. Fortunately, the hotel found a driver to take us (and also fortunately, he came back to pick us up later). Naturally, that was a cash transaction, and I was glad to be prepared.

Consider buying travel insurance . Flight cancellations, baggage losses, accidents, and illnesses happen, and you’ll appreciate the comfort of knowing you’re covered. 

Travel light.

As a confirmed carry-on traveler, I consider myself a pretty good packer, but sometimes that 22” suitcase can get very heavy. That’s my sign to edit — do I really need those dress shoes? Or all those cosmetics? Probably not. Boarding a train, bus, or plane at a small airport without jet bridges requires carrying our own bags, so I make sure they’re manageable. While I appreciate it when another passenger helps me heave my bag into the overhead bin, I don’t count on that happening. (And it’s not the flight attendant’s job.)

Also, I always limit myself to two items. Then there’s no problem boarding a crowded flight where they check how much you’re carrying. Just as important, it’s easier to keep track of two things so nothing gets left behind. I do often start out with a purse, but I make sure there’s enough space to cram it into my personal item.

With these preparations, suggestions, and warnings, you can now proceed to plan your solo trip — hopefully, the first of many.

I am thinking about joining one of the black traveling senior groups.

I too would love to join one of these groups. However, none of them state that they are exclusively for seniors.

All of these groups are ones that I would like to check out as an African American senior who wants to travel more in retirement. I recently received my passport. I have traveled with groups that were for anyone, but I would also like to travel with folks who look like me and share the same perspectives as a black woman. All of the reasons stated above appeal to me. The cultural aspect of travel is important and to have it explained with sensitivity (the complicated past), respect and reverence not always given in other group travel. Ice breaking is already established with like minded individuals. There is a comfortableness. No explanation necessary. I heard of some groups. There is a growing community (YouTube) of black folks living and working abroad.

Moscow Travel Group - March, 2020

After great deliberation, it has been decided that the Moscow Travel Group--which usually meets the 3rd Saturday of each month--should be cancelled for March. We of course are hoping to resume meeting for the April 18 get together.

Siiiigh....so sorry we had to do this Darcy! A friend who owns a coffee shop in Moscow (not the one we go to) says they have been almost empty for a week although Cinda met a friend for coffee yesterday at the Coop and said it was busy and business as usual.

I totally understand why you made the decision to cancel. I'm on the fence about it. I'll see what happens in the next 5-6 days. Stay healthy!!

However, this May, all three graduated from College. Ravi has a job in management training position with Enterprise in Richland, WA. Alisha is now working as a nurse in Pueblo, CO and Ty is working on getting his Master's degree in Psychology so he can be a school counselor. My daughter and her husband have been transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO after 8 war zone deployments in his career. He is now a Master Sgt. Our oldest son, Frank, received his Masters degree a year ago and was transferred to the Bellevue Group Health office as a Clinical Systems Consultant.

Chuck and I are in the process of cleaning out the "nest" witch will be sold within the year. We will downsize to an apt. in Moscow but will keep the ski house as well. It has (so far) been a year of new beginnings and, to celebrate, we plan to take a cruise to AK next month just to see how retirees should live. Life is good.

It is our hop that the birds will fly on their own now and we can reinvent ourselves with newfound freedoms. And, from the look of it, we could keep busy just visiting kids, as spread out as they are. BUT, for their sakes, I hope we find other outlets for what energy we have left.

Looking forward to seeing you at the reunion next summer.

I am living in Moscow, Idaho - married to Charles Hatch who is currently vice-president of research at the University.  We have four children, including a son who is stationed in Germany with the Air Force and a daughter who is married to a sgt. in the Army and also stationed in Germany.  I see a trip to Europe in my future this year!

I worked for the University until Chuck and I were married in l983.  We lived in India and Pakistan for 9 years, returning to the states for the last time in l994 - where, I might add, I intend to stay. :)  I am a homemaker and enjoying the newfound freedom of kids who are on their own or in College.  Life has been an adventure but, now that the kids are more independent, we hope for retirement in a couple years and a chance to travel for fun.

I look forward to seeing you all again this summer.
