Why ‘New Jack City’ returned to the National: a Q&A with Je’Caryous Johnson

The visionary executive producer goes behind the scenes and reveals his dreams for 'Live on Stage' Black content.

When it comes to live entertainment, Je’Caryous Johnson reigns supreme. The writer-director-producer-promoter has made his mark time and again with award-winning stage plays that infuse humor into cultivating stories with empowering messages. Studying under the tutelage of renowned playwrights Edward Albee and August Wilson, Johnson is now known to many in the entertainment industry as the ultimate hitmaker.

Keeping his mentors’ legacies alive, this award-winning Super Producer continues to be the best in entertainment, creating over 20 star-studded, nationally toured stage plays, which include his Original, Classic, and Legacy series. Proving that he can tackle any realm of entertainment, Johnson is also a best-selling author of five books and a highly sought-after motivational speaker.

With his unique, global understanding of the live audience, he is the world’s only writer-producer to also promote his own shows. From the commercial audience to London’s West End, Johnson not only markets his own shows but also has sold out Broadway shows such as Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, The Color Purple, and A Street Car Named Desire.

Je’Caryous took time during his return visit to The National Theatre to share his unique vision of curated content for the growing audience of sophisticated Black theatergoers with DCTA’s urban critic Malcolm Lewis Barnes.

Malcolm Lewis Barnes: Since the last appearance of New Jack City Live on Stage in November of 2022 at the National Theatre, you have been to the iconic Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia and the Texas Trust CU Theatre near Dallas, both with over 3,000 seats. What makes The National with a 1,600-seat capacity special?

Je’Caryous Johnson: The intimacy. Every seat in the National is a good seat. Anita Landers our scheduling contact at The National said, “Are you sure New Jack City will work again this soon?” We sold out again!

How do you keep all those egos in check?

We treat everyone equally. I stay in the same places that my cast and crew stay. Everyone is equally important. We are like one big family! We live on the road together and keep those connections even after the tour is over.

They don’t want to know what you know, they want to know that you care.

I own the company, so I just bought a new tour bus so the cast can relax in “sleepers” for long road trips, to complement the upright coach buses and ground transportation we already have.

I reached out to several members of the audience I met last November to see if they were ready to double down and they all said they would be back to see the show again this week. What do you attribute your audience loyalty to?

I attribute the audience loyalty to consistency. I’ve been around since 1998 and launched my first national tour in 2002, so I have consistently made a commitment to elevate the quality of the product.

I have made an end-to-end investment in this commercial touring model. I own the trucks, the video, and the production equipment, and am committed to safety.

A minor challenge I observed at The National last fall was the post-intermission syncing of the sound system. How does the sound and lighting vary from venue to venue compared to the sheer logistical challenges of getting a Jeep on stage and the three-story scaffolding?

That sound system challenge arose because we used the original National sound system, which hadn’t been tested for a while. And right before showtime our stage director J. Kyle Manzay quickly had to troubleshoot the problem.

I felt that the lobby merchandising and mezzanine photography setup added to the NYC rope-line appeal of the show and its atmospherics. Is merchandising a significant profit center or a “loss leader,” and how many local and travel people are involved?

100% of every penny we make from souvenir sales goes into our nonprofit foundation to help kids and our community-engagement effort called “Theatre for the Living,” which takes live entertainment into senior assisted living facilities. Our nonprofit foundation is called the I’m Ready Foundation.

What is your vision for the future of “Live on Stage” Black content?

At the end of the day, I plan to own the venues that I am now curating. There is nobody stopping me. I don’t think that Broadway is superior to regional commercial theater! I refuse to believe that Broadway is the pinnacle in my life. The only difference between regional theater and Black theater is the curation of content!

We have to be able to re-image classics like Waiting to Exhale !

I see opportunities for HBCUs to channel interns into new productions, but there are not enough producers and general managers out there.

I’m a presenter as well as an artist!

I have also invested in the streaming business with a company called bingeBlack.TV, so my next step is to create the production capacity to focus on “legacy” projects to cement the lives of historical entertainment figures such as Marvin Gaye, Richard Pryor, and Rick James.

There isn’t any reason that we can’t create and do the same business serving Black audiences through regional theater as Broadway can do.

This may be the second successful bite at the National with New Jack City Live on Stage at the National, but Je’Caryous Johnson’s vision is to bring more Black legacy classics “live on stage” in the future!

I attended the February 17th show at the National Theatre which was my first time visiting the theatre as well and from the performance to the stage dynamics was wonderful. The background looked 3D and so real and oh my, the classic Jeep💜💜😅, that was epic👍🏾.

Je’Caryous Johnson Brings ‘New Jack City’ To The Stage With New Stage Play

From the producer who brought you the Set It Off stage play , comes the latest film turned into theater production.  Je’Caryous Johnson , recognized producer, director and writer is back at it with the New Jack City stage play.  The production is set to hit the road this coming November, hitting several cities. Johnson recently revealed that the cast included Allen Payne, Treach, Flex Alexander and Big Daddy Kane!

The play was originally supposed to launch in February of 2022 but was delayed.  It will officially launch in the coming months with new dates and the official cast members listed above.

Johnson’s adaptation of  NEW JACK CITY LIVE  stars critically acclaimed actor  Allen Payne , who will be reprising his role from the film, as “Gee Money,” legendary rapper and lead singer of the iconic rap group Naughty By Nature,  “Treach”  as “Nino Brown,” legendary rapper  Big Daddy Kane  as “Stone,” actor and star of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Gary Dourdan as “Scotty Appleton,” and actor and star of one of TV’s classic hit shows  One on One ,  Flex Alexander  as “Pookie.”

In order to make sure that the New Jack City Live on Stage tour will be the best performance possible, the production has had to adjust their timeline. New Jack City Live on Stage , originally scheduled for Oct. 23, will now make its St. Louis premiere on stage at Stifel Theatre on Sunday, February 26. Don’t miss Allen Payne, Treach, Big Daddy Kane, Gary Dourdan and Flex Alexander when they take the Stifel Theatre stage this February.

All ticket purchased for the original dates will be honored at the new show date. For fans unable to attend the new show date, refunds are available from the original point of purchase and must be requested by Oct. 6, 2022.

Je’Caryous Johnson’s NEW JACK CITY - LIVE ON STAGE with Allen Payne as Gee Money, Treach as Nino Brown, Gary Dourdan and Flex Alexander, fuses the captivating thrill-a-minute story with the memorable lines everyone knows. Fans will relive the non-stop drama of one crime family bonded by blood and forged together through friendship and audiences will be transported back to the early 90s when drug kingpin Nino Brown takes over the Carter apartment complex.

Face Coverings

Face coverings are encouraged, but not required, for entry into all city-owned facilities including the North Charleston Coliseum, Performing Arts Center, and Charleston Area Convention Center.

Clear Bag Policy

Fans are strongly encouraged to not bring any types of bags to the North Charleston Coliseum & PAC, however, outlined below are types of bags that will be permitted:

- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 14” x 6” x 14” - One-gallon plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar) - Small clutch bags, with or without a handle or strap, not to exceed 4.5” x 6.5” - An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at designated entrances specifically for this purpose. - Diaper bags will be allowed for families with infants and toddlers. Child must be present.

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, seat cushions, luggage of any kind, computer bags and camera bags, or any bag larger than the permissible size.

Fans will continue to be able to carry items allowed into the venues such as non-professional cameras, binoculars, and smartphones as long as they are in their pockets or one of the approved bags outlined above.

Huge announcement from global music icon Janet Jackson who will be coming back to the UK in 2024

Music icon Janet Jackson has confirmed a UK tour celebrating her 50th anniversary in entertainment. American superstar Janet will bring her Together Again tour to the UK, which also celebrates 35 years since her seminal album Rhythm Nation.

She will play gigs in Birmingham, London, Glasgow and Manchester in the Autumn. The UK leg will end with a night at Manchester's soon-to-open Co-op Live arena .

It will be the first time Janet has played in Manchester since her last planned UK tour in 2016 was cancelled due to "scheduling difficulties" just weeks before she was due to perform.

A statement from Janet's tour promoters today said: "Off the back of Ms. Jackson’s highly successful and sold out Together Again tour in North America, five-time GRAMMY ® ️Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame®️ Inductee Janet Jackson reveals she will be extending her tour to Europe, adding in multiple stops across the continent. This will be Ms. Jackson’s first UK performance since her iconic 2019 Glastonbury Festival performance."

The European leg of the tour will start in autumn 2024 kicking off in Paris, France on the 25th September at Accor Arena before making multiple stops in the UK, Germany and Belgium before concluding the tour in Amsterdam, Netherlands at Ziggo Dome on the 10th October. The announcement of UK tour dates from the Miss You Much hitmaker follows her 35-date US tour Together Again, which will hit the road this summer across the States. The tour builds on the colossal success of her 2023 run, which earned the icon the highest selling trek of her career. Promoters add: "The Together Again Tour will offer everyone the chance to finally reunite with Ms. Jackson in celebration of her 50th anniversary in entertainment and spotlight the milestone for one of her most critically acclaimed albums - 35 years of “Rhythm Nation” featuring her biggest chart-topping hits."

It has also been announced that Wyclef Jean will join Janet for the UK tour dates as special guest. Janet, 57, is the youngest member of the legendary Jackson musical family.
