This Udaipur travel guide contains a list of the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days along with all the travel information to help you plan a trip to Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Udaipur, also known as the Venice of the East or the city of lakes, is aptly termed so. With many-a lakes set both within and outside the city limits as well as the delightful ghats set along the lake-side, Udaipur oozes a regal charm. In case you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know I spent a good 10 days exploring the cities of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan in India. While I loved spending time in all of these cities, the white marble structures, shimmering lakes, surreal sunsets and the striking havelis of Udaipur stole my heart. Walking along the narrow lanes of the old town set next to lake Pichola, watching the local vendors lure tourists inside their shops with colourful garments, glittering jewels, and fascinating turbans while gorging on the kachori , a local street food, was an experience like none other.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur Rajasthan

  • Summer (April - June): Summer in the dry arid state of Rajasthan can get overbearingly hot which is why it’s best to avoid visiting Udaipur during this time.
  • Monsoon (July - September): Even though the monsoon months bring a respite from the heat, the muddy streets and the humidity can hamper your sightseeing plans.
  • Winter (October - March): The winter months are the best time to visit Udaipur. While December and January can get quite cold, the months of October, November, March and April have pleasant weather and are the best months to visit Udaipur.

Nearest airport to udaipur.

Udaipur has an airport called the Maharana Pratap Airport, which is a domestic airport. The airport is only 22 km from the city center. You can book an Uber or Ola cab to get to the airport within half an hour from the city. Alternatively, you can hire a private taxi cab to drop you to the Udaipur airport as well.

Getting Around Udaipur

A majority of the sightseeing places in Udaipur are set in the old city, around Lake Pichola. Due to this, if you stay within the old city, you can simply walk or take a tuk-tuk to almost all the places to visit in Udaipur. However, you may need to hire a cab or tuk-tuk for half a day to visit some of the other sightseeing spots which lie farther away from the city center.

Where to Stay in Udaipur

Zostel udaipur.

Rooftop at Zostel Udaipur

View from the rooftop at Zostel Udaipur

Throughout my 3 days in Udaipur, I stayed at Zostel Udaipur which is next to the Swaroop Sagar Lake, right next to Lake Pichola near the old city. This backpacker hostel has both dorm rooms as well as private rooms. The best part about this hostel was the lavish rooftop cafe that had marble tabletops, metal chairs with elaborate designs on them along with plants and cheerful flowers. I cannot put into words how dreamy it was to watch the sunrise from here. Plus, the delicious dinners sitting at the rooftop, while watching the lights of the city reflect in the water of the lake ahead was nothing short of spectacular.

Hotels in Udaipur

Coming to finding other hotels in Udaipur, I strongly suggest booking a hotel near Lake Pichola, which will make it easy to access all the places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. Additionally, there’s nothing like waking up to watch the sun glimmer in the waters of the lake, while staying at a hotel near the lake in Udaipur.

Best Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 Days

1. lake pichola.

Lake Pichola in Places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Lake Pichola is an artificial lake, built-in 1362 AD in order to fulfil the agricultural and drinking water needs of the city. In the present day, Lake Pichola is the most popular attraction in Udaipur, with many other sightseeing places situated around the lake. There are 4 islands on this lake and visitors can indulge in a boat ride to visit these islands. I suggest taking a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola to watch the sun go down behind the Aravali hills in the distance, with its orange hues reflecting in the water of the lake. Apart from that, there are numerous cafes and restaurants offering the most amazing views of the lake both from up-close and from rooftops. Moreover, there are numerous ghats to sit and enjoy watching the sun setting behind the lake, with Gangaur Ghat and Ambrai Ghat being the most visited ones.

2. Ganguar Ghat

Ganguar Ghat - Places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Gangaur Ghat is the main ghat on Lake Pichola that is located near the Jagdish temple area in the old town. The ghat is identified and made popular due to the iconic Bagore ki Haveli, which lies on one end of Gangaur Ghat. There are steps leading down to the lake here. In the mornings you’ll see locals walking along the ghat and bathing here whereas, in the evenings, the place is crowded with tourists sitting on these steps, waiting to watch and capture the sunset across the ghat. While I loved the view and the setting of the ghat, the place was dirty. It could definitely use some maintenance as well as some more benches for people to sit.

3. Bagore ki Haveli

Ganguar ghat in Places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Bagore ki Haveli is a haveli, or traditional mansion, set along Lake Pichola, on one end of Gangaur Ghat. While the expansive palace is quite impressive, with over hundred rooms, multiple courtyards and incritate mirror work used for decoration, it's the cultural show at Bagore ki Haveli which is the highlight of the place. For one hour in the evening, the haveli lights up and becomes home to a traditional folk dance show. The tickets to the dance show can be purchased online or in-person on the spot at the haveli. This cultural show is held every evening at the Neem courtyard of Bagore ki Haveli.

Open all days 9.30 am to 5.30 pm

4. City Palace

City Palace Places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Similar to most of the other places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days, the City Palace of Udaipur is set along Lake Pichola. A sprawling palace built in the 16th century, it is one of the main attractions in Udaipur. The Palace has many-a sprawling courtyards and glorious rooms in decadent colours signifying the opulence of the Rajput royal families that once lived here. Many of the corridors and rooms in Udaipur’s city palace open up to splendid views of the city. Not just that, the lavish mirror work in some sections is worthy of being labelled as instagrammable. Spare at least 2 hours to walk around, revel in the glorious history and to soak in all the royal vibes at city palace.

5. Jag Mandir

Jag Mandir in Places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Jag Mandir, also known as the Lake Garden Palace is a palace built on a small island on Lake Pichola. The palace has been converted into a hotel owned by the HRH group. People wishing to stay at an island palace can book a stay at the rooms here. The hotel also has a restaurant with the most breathtaking view. For those who are not staying at the palace but who wish to visit it, can hire a boat ride from the Bansi Ghat jetty to visit the Jag Mandir Palace. Visitors can also dine at the restaurant here. Note that there is a minimum cover charge here and you need to reserve a table in advance so be prepared accordingly in case you wish you dine here. It’s best to visit the Jag Mandir around the time of sunset so that you can take a quick tour of the palace and then watch the sunset either from the restaurant or from the boat ride back.

Open all days 10 am to 6 pm

6. Jagdish Temple

Jagdish temple in Places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Jagdish temple is yet another one of the popular places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. The architecture and the marble steps leading up to the temple are both very interesting. The temple is located just a short walk from both City Palace and Gangaur Ghat as well as Bagore ki Haveli. So if you’re going from the City Palace towards Bagore ki Haveli (and consequently Ganguar Ghat) or vice-versa, you can visit Jagdish temple on the way.

7. Doodh Talai

Doodh talai in Places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days & Udaipur travel guide

Doodh Talai, translated to ‘milk lake’ from Hindi, is a tiny but picturesque lake next to Lake Pichola. Situated at a walking distance from some of the important sightseeing places such as the City Palace and Jagdish temple, the lake is surrounded by small hillocks, has clear water and white ornate structures all around it. There are lots of street food ventors around the lake and activities such as boating and horse rides are also provided here. Additionally, while you’re here, do take the ropeway up to Karni Mata temple for the most breathtaking sunset view.

8. Royal Cenotaphs

Royal cenotaphs in places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days & Udaipur travel guide

One of the most underrated places to visit in Udaipur, Royal Cenotaphs or Ahar Cenotaphs are a group of 250 cenotaphs built as a memorial to Rajput maharajas. While there is no entry fee for the cenotaphs, the nearby Ahar Museum charges a nominal fee to enter. Since the Royal Cenotaphs are located inside the city, you will need to hire a tuk-tuk or a cab to get here, if you're staying near Lake Pichola. Also note that there is a sign here saying photography is not permitted but hardly anyone follows this rule. If you’re looking for offbeat places to visit in Udaipur, then the Ahar Cenotaphs are the place to go to!

Shopping in Udaipur

Shopping in Udaipur

Hathi pol bazaar, which lies within walking distance of Zostel Udaipur, is one of the best places to do shopping in Udaipur. There are innumerable shops selling clothing in local prints, handicraft items as well as traditional jewellery. Ahmedabadwala was one of the noteworthy jewellery shops that I discovered in this market. While it may look like a tiny, dismissive place, don’t judge it by its appearance. The sweet old man who runs the shop had the most amazing collection of jewellery in mirror work, Kundan work, Meena work, handpainted work and more. Not just that, the jewellery was available in multiple price ranges, going from a mere INR 100-150 up to thousands of rupees. I recommend this shop to anyone looking to shop for traditional jewellery in Udaipur. Furthermore, I picked up vintage handpainted postcards from Sakshi Art School, which is situated right next to Zostel Udaipur. Once again, the kind man who runs this art school was so sweet that I couldn't help including his store/ art school in this Udaipur travel guide.

Where to Eat in Udaipur - Best Restaurants and Cafes in Udaipur

No trip to Udaipur is complete without gorging on a scrumptious Rajasthani thali and sitting in a nice cafe or restaurant at Lake Pichola. While there are numerous places where you can do both of the aforementioned things in Udaipur, I’ve mentioned two of the top restaurants and cafes in Udaipur, based on my experience in the city.

Places to eat in Udaipur - Jheel cafe

What is one of the most amazing cafes in Udaipur city, Jheel cafe lies near Gangaur Ghat, sitting pretty right next to Lake Pichola. The cafe has two levels - the top floor where you can get a nice view of the lake and the section which has a more extensive menu. On the other hand, the bottom floor of Jheel cafe has a limited menu and limited seating. However, this is where there's a catch. What most people miss observing is that there’s a small door at the bottom level which leads to a small open-air section where it almost feels as if you’re touching the lake. I loved sitting here, enjoying a hot cup of tea on a cool wintery morning, taking in the beauty of the lake in front of me.

Tribute Restaurant

Places to eat in Udaipur - Tribute restaurant

Tribute restaurant is an upscale restaurant located directly opposite to Zostel Udaipur, on the other side of the lake. The restaurant has the most amazing view of the lake in the evening, with lights of the restaurant and the city shimmering in the placid water. Even though the restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, I would recommend sitting outside for the best views and a phenomenal ambience. The food tasted good but I did not enjoy the cocktails here. You may need to call ahead and reserve a table during the tourist season, in order to be assured a table.

Your Trip to Udaipur: The Complete Guide

places to visit in udaipur in september

No longer in the shadow of the iconic UNESCO World Heritage City of Jaipur, Udaipur has evolved into a heritage hot-spot and top tourist destination in Rajasthan . This isn't surprising, as the romantic city of lakes and palaces invariably delights visitors with its enchanting setting and evocative regal history. The Mewar royal family has done much to preserve and make accessible the legacy of their ancestors, who founded Udaipur in the 16th century . In addition to this stately splendor, Udaipur is a laid-back city that offers great value for all types of travelers. The 1983 James Bond movie "Octopussy" was filmed there, too!

Find out all you need to know in this Udaipur guide.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Udaipur's location at the southern end of the Aravalli Range separates it from the Thar Desert, producing a semi-arid local steppe climate that's not too extreme. The cool, dry, and sunny months from October to February are most comfortable and draw the crowds. Nights do get nippy during the middle of winter, but the days are gloriously warm, with temperatures of up to 79 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius). If you'd prefer a more peaceful experience, the September shoulder season after the monsoon could be perfect. Only visit Udaipur during April and May if you don't mind temperatures touching 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or more. Read more about the weather and climate in Udaipur and the best time to visit Udaipur .
  • Language: Rajasthani (Mewari local dialect), Hindi and English.
  • Currency: Indian rupee.
  • Time Zone: UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) +5.5 hours, also known as Indian Standard Time. Udaipur does not have daylight saving time.
  • Getting Around: Udaipur's narrow lanes are ideally explored on foot, so do bring comfortable walking shoes. Auto rickshaws are readily available and should cost under 100 rupees ($1.40) to go anywhere within the city. App-based cabs Uber and Ola are the most convenient way of reaching attractions on the city's outskirts. They're usually cheaper and less-hassle than auto rickshaws.
  • Travel Tip: If hot weather isn't an issue, the Gangaur festival takes place in April and is the biggest festival of the year in Udaipur. The three-day Mewar festival, dedicated to showcasing the region's culture, is held alongside it and is a fun experience.

Things to Do

Udaipur has a compact but captivating collection of museums that showcase the region's culture and heritage. Simply wandering the streets and soaking up the atmosphere are among the most enjoyable things to do in Udaipur. Those who are feeling energetic can cycle around the city, hike in the hills, or even go horseback riding. Cooking classes are a hit with foreigners. Udaipur is renowned for its unique miniature paintings, and they make great gifts. You can even paint your own. Many tourists love shopping in Udaipur because of the abundance of irresistible handicrafts. Do allow some time for a day trip or two into the surrounding countryside—there are some interesting options, including ancient forts and temples.

  • The City Palace Complex , including the City Palace Museum, is Udaipur's star attraction. More than one million people visit it each year . It's the largest palace complex in Rajasthan and provides incredible insight into the life of the royal family.
  • A boat ride on Lake Pichola is magical at sunset! (Sit on the right side of the boat for the best vista).
  • A heritage walking tour will immerse you in Udaipur's old city off the tourist trail.

Our detailed articles about the best things to do in Udaipur and the top places to visit near Udaipur have more information.

What to Eat and Drink

Distinct from predominantly vegetarian Rajasthani cuisine, the local Mewari cuisine in Udaipur features an assortment of rustic meat dishes, as the royal rulers of the region were avid hunters. Laal Maas (spicy red mutton curry) is the most famous dish. Fresh fish from the region's lakes is part of the cuisine too. You may even find rabbit on some restaurant menus!

Vegetarians can try regional specialties such as Gatte ki Sabji (steamed chickpea flour dumplings in a tangy tomato and yogurt curry) and Dal Bati Churma. Udaipur is also renowned for its deep-fried snacks such as Mirchi Bada (large green chilies stuffed with spices and potato) and Kachori (pastry discs with spiced lentils or onion fillings). For sweet tooths, there are desserts, including Malpua (pancakes fried and dunked in sugar syrup) and Ghevar (a cake-like dish soaked in sugar syrup and ghee).

The few bars that Udaipur does have close by midnight. So, if you're looking for nightlife in Udaipur , you'll be disappointed. Drinks are best enjoyed under the stars at a rooftop with a mesmerizing backdrop of the city and Lake Pichola.

Explore our pick of foods to try in Udaipur and the best restaurants in Udaipur .

Where to Stay

The majority of Udaipur's accommodations are situated on Lake Pichola's east side, in the Lal Ghat, Gangaur Ghat, and Chandpole areas bordering the lake. This is on the same side of the lake as the City Palace and is in the heart of the old part of the city, so you'll have easy access to the main attractions. There are all kinds of properties, including boutique heritage hotels, guesthouses, and backpacker hostels. Many offer lake views. Read more about the various neighborhoods in Udaipur .

Two authentic palace hotels are set within the City Palace Complex itself—the Taj Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel and Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel (which features in "Octopussy"). The ethereal Taj Lake Palace Hotel, which appears to float right in the middle of Lake Pichola, is the top choice, though.

Across the bridge, the northwest side of Lake Pichola around Hanuman Ghat is quieter, but hotels proliferate. The benefit of staying on this side of the lake is that you'll be able to see the City Palace across the lake. Luxury five-star hotels such as The Leela and the Oberoi Udaivilas also front this side of the lake, albeit in more isolated spots.

See our recommendations for the best hotels in Udaipur.

Getting There

Udaipur's airport is 30 to 40 minutes east of the city. It's a small domestic airport that receives flights from Jaipur and major cities in India, including Delhi and Mumbai.

Udaipur is situated about five hours south of Jodhpur , and there are several attractions (such as Kumbhalgarh fort and Ranakpur Jain temple) to check out on the way. Therefore, it makes sense to hire a car and driver to travel between these two cities if you're exploring Rajasthan. You can also drive from Jaipur to Udaipur, or vice-versa, and spend a night in Bundi to break the journey. (Bundi is about five hours from Udaipur and four hours from Jaipur).

Indian Railways trains stop at Udaipur, although services are quite limited. The railway station, Udaipur City, is only five minutes east of the City Palace area. Its station code is UDZ.

Culture and Customs

Tipping isn't compulsory in India, although it's expected if you're happy with the service. A 10 to 15 percent tip is sufficient at a restaurant, or simply round the bill up on smaller amounts. Flag down the waiter to get your bill. Hotels will commonly have a tip box where you can leave gratuities for the staff. Tour guides can be tipped a couple of hundred rupees per day, and around 400 rupees for drivers.

Being a popular tourist destination, Udaipur has its share of scams to watch out for. Beware of anyone who tells you a royal wedding is about to take place (they'll lead you to a tailor's shop to get an overpriced outfit made for the non-existent occasion), or that they're involved in exhibiting special embroidery or other handicrafts (which they'll end up trying to sell you).

Dress standards are fairly conservative in Udaipur. It's respectful to keep your shoulders and legs below the knee covered. Ladies, if it's hot and you want to wear a sleeveless top or dress, solve the problem by throwing on a shawl when necessary.

Money Saving Tips

  • Hotel rates fall by 50 to 75 percent from March until the end of September, during the summer and monsoon season. For some people, this may make luxury hotels affordable. Fantastic deals are guaranteed during this time, no matter where you stay.
  • Grab an unlimited Rajasthani thali (platter) for lunch. You'll be able to eat as much as you can for only a few dollars.
  • Haggling is expected at markets and other stores that aren't fixed-price (such as government emporiums). Here are some tips for bargaining to help with the process.

Things to do in Udaipur | Places to visit in Udaipur

Last Updated on January 5, 2023 by admin

Planning a visit to Udaipur? This is the best itinerary for things to do in Udaipur in 3 days that cover all the places to visit in Udaipur for first-time visitors.

Udaipur – the city of lakes is always on the list of must-visit destinations in Rajasthan. Known as the ‘Venice of the East’, Udaipur lures every kind of tourist, traveler, and backpacker.

I have visited Udaipur over 5 times with my family, colleagues, and friends. Each visit has been amazing because of the gorgeous lakes, pleasant weather, and stunning architecture all around.

Check out this guide for things to do in Udaipur in 3 days!

Table of Contents

Things to do in Udaipur

Jagdish temple, udaipur.

Start sightseeing in Udaipur by taking blessings from Lord Vishnu at the Jagdish temple.

Located in the center of the city, Jagdish temple is a large Hindu temple with historic importance. Earlier known as the temple of Jagannath Rai, this is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur.

It is considered important for worship but brings architecture enthusiasts to this temple. The carvings on the exterior of the temple are stunning. Eklingji temple near Udaipur is another gem.

This three-storied temple is built on a raised platform and flaunts magnificently carved pillars, huge airy halls, and painted walls that are adorned with vibrant colours and intricately decorated ceilings which showcases Indo-Aryan architecture which is why it is one of the best architectural wonders of Rajasthan.

The elephant carving certainly reminded me of the Mahakuta Temples of Karnataka and Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat .

There is no entry ticket to the temple however if you wish to worship the deity, the temple doors open in two shifts –  4:15 am to 1:00 pm and 5:15 pm to 8 pm.

Take blessings at Jagdish temple - Things to do in Udaipur

Feel like a royal at the Udaipur City Palace

The most popular spot in Udaipur – The City Palace deserves a visit.

City Palace Udaipur is one of the largest palace complexes in Rajasthan and visitors will feel every bit of royalty in almost every nook and corner.

Located on the banks of Pichola lake with Aravalli hills as a backdrop, its extravagant opulence is noticeable everywhere.

The palace is built with white marble and granite and the interiors are beautifully decorated with silver work, mirror work, inlay work, glass paintings, and murals. The architecture is a fusion of European, Mughal, Chinese, and Rajasthani work! Similar work is seen in Juna Mahal palace, a property of Udai Bilas Palace Dungarpur .

Places not to be missed within the complex are Sheesh Mahal, Mor Chowk, Surya Chopar, Krishna Vilas, Dilkhush Mahal and Suraj Gokhda.

A visit to Udaipur city palace will require over 3 hours. So, visitors can choose to have food at the in-house Fatehprakash Palace and restaurant. Although expensive the views are amazing and the food is delicious.

Udaipur City Palace timings: 7 am to 11 pm (includes entry to restaurants)

Udaipur City Palace museum timings: 9 am to 5 pm

Know the history of Mewar through the Light and Sound Show

Immerse yourself a bit more into history by staying back in the Udaipur City Palace till evening. The palace complex hosts a Light and Sound show which is worth watching.

Watch the Mewar sound and light show ‘The Legacy of Honor, which takes place at the Manek Chowk inside the palace complex between 7 – 8 pm. It is an amazing way to know the history of Rajasthan. The entry fees of this separate.

Explore the Jag Mandir Palace Udaipur

Many travelers miss this option of things to do in Udaipur but should not.

Build on the Jag Mandir Island in Pichola Lake, Jag Mandir is a magnificent place. The medieval architecture and luxurious and royal surroundings make it a dream place to be in, and one of the best places for sightseeing in Udaipur.

The view of City Palace while going to Jag Mandir is worth the boat fees. Wander around Jag Mandir Palace gardens and fountains or just chill till sunset at the cafe for a chilled beer overlooking Pichola lake and the city palace.

Visitors have to head down to the City Palace jetty for a boat tour to get to the Jag Mandir Palace.

Catch the sunset over Pichola lake

Visiting Pichola lake is a favorite thing to do in Udaipur for the locals and tourists. The lake contains four islands namely – Jag Mandir, Jag Niwas, Mohan Mandir and Arsi Vilas.

Taking a boat ride on the lake is extremely therapeutic during sunset.

If you don’t prefer a boat ride, chose a hotel on the banks of Pichola and spend the evening on the lakeside balcony or the terrace to soak in Lake Pichola.

The pristine Pichola lake

Visit Bagore ki Haveli

Situated at the Gangaur Ghat, a visit to Bagore ki Haveli is one of the best things to do in Udaipur.

Haveli means a mansion and this mansion is decorated with mirrors. It showcases paintings, murals, clothes from yesteryear as well as intricate artworks.

Bagore ki Haveli houses huge courtyards, balconies, jharokhas, decorative archways, fountains, and exceptionally decorated 138 rooms with mirror work. The walls of the Haveli are adorned beautifully with alluring glasswork and mural paintings.

The Chambers of the Royal Ladies is worth visiting for its renowned glass windows that are colored beautifully. It houses two peacocks made with colored glass mosaic that is exceptionally crafted.

Bagore ki Haveli also has four museums apart from the haveli which are The Puppet museum, the Turban museum, the Weapon Museum, and the Wedding Depiction Section.

Get awed at Dharohar Folk Dance Show at Bagore ki Haveli

Attending a Rajasthani cultural dance show is one of the popular things to do in Udaipur at night. At 7 pm, the Bagore ki haveli turns into a dance showcase with the cultural folk dance show called ‘Dhanohar dance’.

Visitors can buy tickets for the Haveli entrance as well as this show together. This one-hour folk dance show will enthrall you with 4 types of traditional Rajasthani dance forms – Ghumar, Chari, Kalbelia, and Bhavai.

Attending Dharohar Folk Dance at Bagore ki Haveli

Feel small at Badi Lake

Head a little bit away from the city towards nature for some offbeat things to do in Udaipur.

Spend a misty evening at Badi Lake, Udaipur

Shop till you drop at Shilpgram Udaipur

Once you leave Badi lake and are towards the city, make a stop at Shilpgram, a living museum of traditional Rajasthani arts and crafts. It has a plethora of things to see and do if you have the time.

If it’s a quick visit, you can shop for souvenirs right here and learn a little bit about the state’s culture. Possible things to shop for include paintings, ceramics, wooden handicrafts, clothes, etc.

There are live performances in the amphitheater and you can check the timings of the same at the entrance gate.

Things to do in Udaipur - Visit Shilpgram

Lake hopping at Fatehsagar Lake

I would suggest driving across Fatehsagar Lake and taking in the views of blue waters and having lunch at one of the restaurants with a lake view.

Amidst the view of beautiful Aravalli hills and forests, the Fateh Sagar Lake looks beautiful. Like the other lakes, watching a sunset here is beautiful but since we need to adhere to an itinerary, I would suggest spending time at one of the lakes only.

This lake has a periphery and enough space to walk around it, unlike Pichola lake which is crammed with restaurants, boats, and hotels.

One can choose to take a morning walk or post-dinner walk here while eating ice cream from local stalls, making it one of the best places to visit in Udaipur for couples.

The ghats of Lake Pichola

Feel the clouds at Sajjangarh Palace or Monsoon Palace

Sajjangarh Palace Udaipur is a hilltop palatial residence, overlooking the Fateh Sagar Lake. The foundation of the Fort is laid on marble pillars that have exclusive motifs of flowers and leaves carved all over it. The palace walls are plastered with lime mortar.

There is a vast central court with a stunning staircase and several quarters and rooms. The Fort has high turrets and guards monitoring each of the towers. The domes, fountains, and jharokhas all around the palaces are exquisite marvels of Rajasthani architecture.

The palace offers a panoramic view of the city’s lakes, palaces and surrounding countryside. It was built chiefly to watch the monsoon clouds.

Visitors can easily spend an hour climbing the top, soaking in the views of clouds across the Aravalli hills. Spend the late afternoon till evening around 5:30 pm.

Another option here is to visit The Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary.

Saheliyon ki Badi

Saheliyon ki Bari translated as ‘Garden for friends’ is a sprawling garden having marble elephants, fountains, manicured rose bushes and many trees all maintained in a manicured garden. No wonder it is a popular garden in Udaipur.

The yesteryear king, Maharana Sangram Singh built this garden as a gift for his wife and the queen’s 48 accompanists who came with her as dowry. The garden was built so that the queen and her friends could relax and retreat.

Visit the Ahar Cenotaphs

Ahar Cenotaphs is an offbeat place to visit in Udaipur.

Situated a little away from the city, cenotaphs are royal tombstones. With beautiful architecture and carvings on them, they attract a few tourists to visit them. Similar cenotaphs are also located at Indore and Bhuj .

Ride the Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway

One of the adventure things to do in Udaipur is riding the Ropeway in Udaipur to reach the Karni Mata temple.

Tourists can ride cable cars up the hill from Deen Dayal Park at Doodh Talai to Karni Mata temple. One can enjoy Udaipur city from the viewing platform there, hence it is another good place to watch the sunset in Udaipur.

Vintage Car Museum Udaipur

One of the unique things to do in Udaipur is to visit the vintage car museum. The cars showcased here were used by the Kings of Mewar in Udaipur, back then.

This museum is a gem for car lovers to get a rare insight into the maintenance and upkeep of vintage cars. They are meticulously maintained.

The car collection, opened to the public in early 2000, is housed in what was once the royal garage. There’s even an antique petrol pump there. Highlights of this museum include a 1924 Rolls Royce, a 1938 Cadillac, 1946 Buick, 1947 Chevrolet bus used for transporting children to the Maharana’s school and the first Rolls Royce jeep.

Shopping in Udaipur

Udaipur is as much a shopping destination as it is for visiting lakes and palaces.

Hathi Pol is one of the colorful streets for silver jewelry, paintings, souvenirs, batik, and bandhani clothing as well as camel leather goods. Bring a big shopping bag and start shopping. These are the 5 things to buy in Udaipur. You can also check this Shopping in Jaipur guide. A lot of stuff is similar in both cities.

Where to stay in Udaipur | Accommodation in Udaipur

Hotels in Udaipur are all over the city and unless you choose the right hotel you will spend a lot of time commuting to and from the hotel. I highly recommend choosing a hotel near any one of the lakes – Fatehsagar Lake, Udaipur or Pichola Lake, Udaipur. There are many resorts on the outskirts of the city that are perfect for a relaxing Staycation in Udaipur in case you don’t want to see the city. Read my review on Seven Stays Villa, Udaipur .

But if you want to check out all the attractions in Udaipur, then it is best to choose in the city. Since I am more inclined towards Pichola lake, my recommendation is near it.

Hostel: Zostel , GoStops Hostel

Home Stay: Lal ghat guest house

Mid range hotel: Amet Haveli , Kankarwa Haveli

Luxury hotel: The Lalit Laxmi Vilas Palace , Shiv Niwas Palace

Where to eat in Udaipur

Reserve a table at Ambrai for dinner and relish delectable Rajasthani treats with a gorgeous view. Sip on chai while enjoying the breathtaking views of Pichola lake at Jheel cafe or Upre Restaurant. Here is a list of Places to Eat in Udaipur .

Best time to visit Udaipur

In spite of being a city of lakes, summer season in Udaipur is hot. It is best to visit Udaipur in winter (November to March) and even Monsoons are pleasant.

Haldighati (translated as a turmeric-colored pass) is a mountain pass where the Battle of Haldighati took place between the Mewar forces led by Maharana Pratap, and the Mughal forces.

Sustainable tips for Udaipur Travel Guide

  • Cars are not allowed in a major portion of the city center. So think before packing that huge airbag without wheels. You can get an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) for hotel drop from many of the parking spaces available and allotted for tourist parking.
  • Blend in the culture by wearing the right clothes. Skirts and pants till knee level are good. Avoid spaghetti and tank tops. Cover your shoulders with a scarf if necessary.
  • Choose local food wherever possible
  • Do not litter tourist places. Always use a dustbin.
  • Do not harm the ancient palace and temple structures by carving or writing on it
  • Do not enter places that are closed off, there’s a reason why they are closed.

When I did touring in Rajasthan I somehow skipped Udaipur and spent more time in Jaipur. Your pics are enticing and makes me want to go and visit those lake palaces and streets. Love the travel tips you have provided at the end!

Funny story but when I first went to Udaipur, I was not impressed, maybe because I overloaded with forts, palaces and opulence all over Rajasthan and Udaipur was my last place. But every visit after that has been special and an eye-opener, making me fall in love again and again. You must visit Rajasthan to visit Udaipur 🙂

Udaipur Itinerary For 2 Days

  • September 1, 2023

Udaipur, hemmed by the scenic Aravalli and sitting on the picturesque Lake Pichola, has an unrivaled setting and is THE most beautiful city in Rajasthan . It is also known as “The City of Lakes” and “Venice of the East” as it is surrounded by many serene artificial lakes, including Fateh Sagar Lake, Jaisamand Lake, and Rajsamand Lake. Every nook and cranny of the romantic city will captivate you with its intriguing past, cultural vibrancy, architectural marvels, local folklore, and stunning splendor. It exudes old-world charm and has the perfect laid-back vibes to help you escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Rana Udai Singh founded Udaipur as the new capital of the Mewar Kingdom in the 16th century. The royal town remained the capital of Mewar until 1818 when it became a princely state of British India. As a result, it is not surprising that the entire region is liberally dotted with tranquil temples, historic Havelis, imposing forts, and floating palaces. The best places to visit in Udaipur are scattered throughout the town. However, because the city is small, you can see most of it in two days if you plan well. This guide has you covered, as it walks you through a curated itinerary that includes top attractions.

Udaipur Itinerary: Day 1

Start your day early if you want to make the most of your limited time here. The Jagdish Temple is located in the heart of the old city, and one must pass through it to get to the City Palace. So we’ll start with Jagdish Temple and then move on to City Palace, a must-see landmark in Udaipur. It will be lunchtime by the time you finish City Palace. Many lake-facing hotels, restaurants, and rooftop bars surround the lake, allowing you to enjoy the view while grabbing a bite. After lunch, you can take a boat ride with a stop at Jag Mandir Palace and then go shopping. If you’d rather watch the sunset over Lake Pichola, you can shop first and then return for a gorgeous sunset. After a long and exhausting day of sightseeing and shopping, it is best to have a leisurely dinner and retire early.

1). Jagdish Temple, Udaipur

The Jagdish Temple was built in 1651 AD by Maharana Jagat Singh and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the Universe. It features an impressive four-armed statue of Lord Vishnu carved from a single piece of black stone. To reach the largest temple in Udaipur, one must climb 32 steep marble stairs. The three-story Indo-Aryan temple has been adorned with ceiling art, ornate shrines, elegant sculptures, painted walls, carved pillars, and a Garuda statue. Photography is not permitted inside the Jagdish Temple. Follow temple protocol by removing your shoes and covering your shoulders and knees. Visit Timings : 4:30 am – 1 pm & 5 pm – 8 pm Visiting Duration : 30 minutes Entry Charges : Free

2).  City Palace, Udaipur

The City Palace is just a short walk from Jagdish Temple. This marble and granite palace is the highlight of your Udaipur itinerary. City Palace is located on a hill and provides a 360-degree view of the city and the lake. Maharana Udai Singh built the grand palace on the banks of Lake Pichola in 1559 AD. It was constructed over 400 years ago with contributions from several rulers of the Mewar dynasty. From the outside, City Place resembles a fort, and the architecture is a perfect blend of Rajput and Mughal designs. You’ll need at least two hours to explore the maze of hidden rooms, corridors, terraces, courtyards, gates, museums, and gardens. Admire the spectacular grandeur of Bhim Vilas, Sheesh Mahal, Badi Mahal, Zenana Mahal, Amar Vilas, and Mor Chowk. The memorabilia, furniture, and paintings on display at the Museum and Crystal Gallery (extra charge) are impressive. Photography is permitted for a fee. Location: Silawat Wadi. Visit Timings : 9:30 am- 5:30 pm (no tickets after 4:30 pm) Visiting Duration: Entry Charges: Rs.30/    Museum Entry Charge: Rs 250/

3).  Lake Pichola, Udaipur

Lake Pichola is one of Udaipur’s largest and oldest artificial freshwater lakes, and there is a lot going on around it. The lake was created initially as a pond in 1362 AD by a nomad named Picchu Banjara. Maharana Udai Singh later commissioned the development of this pond and expanded the lake by constructing a stone masonry dam. Lake Pichola is home to the exquisite Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace Hotel (Jag Niwas). The Taj Lake Palace Hotel is one of the most unique hotels in the world, but you can only visit it if you stay there. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola, especially at sunset, to take in the incredible views. The government-operated ferries depart from Municipal Boat Ride Point (no stops at the Jag Mandir Palace). If you don’t want to get on a boat, Gangaur Ghat is another great place to watch the sunset, with the entire city painted in golden hues.

4).  Jag Mandir, Udaipur

During your boat ride, you have the option of stopping at Jag Mandir, an island on Lake Pichola. Boats for Jag Mandir depart from the City Palace jetty. Since Jag Mandir is a private domain, you must purchase a separate ticket to gain access. You can also rent a private boat where you won’t have to share space with anyone. Jag Mandir Palace, also known as “Lake Garden Palace,” dates back to the 17th century and is finely crafted with intricate Rajput and Mughal architecture. The luxurious Gul Mahal and the beautifully manicured gardens are a sight to behold. The palace has now been converted into a hotel and is a popular venue for royal Indian weddings . If you’re hungry, stop by Darikhana, which serves delectable Rajasthani cuisine . Visit Timings: 10 am – 6 pm Visiting Duration: 30 minutes Entry Charges: Free

5).  Shop in the Local Markets

A trip to Udaipur would be incomplete without exploring the narrow and winding streets of the city. The lively bazaars are lined with quaint and artsy shops, as well as street vendors. Hathipole, Bapu bazaar, and the area around Jagdish Temple are great places to stock up on silver jewelry, bandhani/batik clothing, leather items, Mojadis, miniature paintings, local handicrafts, and endless souvenirs . When doing street shopping , bargain hard because shopkeepers usually quote 2-3 times the actual price. Those looking for high-end bohemian clothing and accessories should go to the boutiques and the Ganesh Emporium. Authentic handicrafts, as well as mirrored bags by Vipul Shah, can be found there. While you’re there, keep an eye out for the street art and murals that are all over Udaipur’s old city.

Udaipur Itinerary: Day 2

Today we would be stepping out of the main city. Begin your day with a visit to the Monsoon Palace, which is located 9 kilometers from the city center. After reaching the hilltop and admiring the panorama, proceed to Fateh Sagar Lake, which is the next stop. We spend some leisure time there before heading to Shilpgram. A few hours spent at the artisan village will add a cultural twist to your Udaipur vacation. Shilpgram’s restaurant serves mouth-watering traditional fare for lunch. Return to your hotel to freshen up before the Bagore ki Haveli cultural spectacle. After you’ve finished watching the show, eat your dinner and call it a day.

Monsoon Palace

1).  Monsoon Palace, Udaipur

Monsoon Palace, also known as Sajjan Garh Palace, is located on top of the Bansadara Hills, just outside of Udaipur. The 19th-century regal edifice built by Maharana Sajjan Singh was intended to be an observatory to track monsoon clouds, hence the name. The project was never finished because the king passed away, and the royal family started using it as a hunting and recreation lodge. You may ride a shared taxi/van to get to the fort. If you have a car, you can drive up to the palace. The hike takes about 1-2 hours as it is all uphill the entire way. The palace features a variety of pillars, domes, turrets, and jharokas in the true Rajasthani style, all made of marble with intricate inlay. The structure, however, is poorly maintained, and there is not much to see there. The primary purpose of our visit is to experience the sweeping panoramas of Udaipur, including all of its beautiful palaces and lakes. Visit Timings : 9 am – 5 pm Visiting Duration: 2 hours Entry Charges for Indians/Foreigners: Rs.110/Rs.300

2).  Fateh Sagar Lake, Udaipur

Fateh Sagar Lake is another artificial body of water that was built during the reign of Maharana Jai Singh in 1678 AD. While visiting the lake, you can take in spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and verdant gardens. On the shimmering blue waters, you can ride a boat, speed boat, or jet ski. If you don’t feel like taking a spin on the water, you can sit on the benches facing the lake and soak in the beauty of the area while watching the locals enjoy their day. The lake is also home to Udaipur’s solar observatory. Don’t pass up the opportunity to gorge yourself on the wide selection of local snacks offered by the countless street food vendors stationed there.

Fateh Sagar Lake

3).  Shilpgram, Udaipur

Shilpgram is a 70-acre village-themed arts and crafts complex on the outskirts of Udaipur. The compound includes small huts made of mud and other natural building materials which highlight the ethnic diversity of India’s western states. Shilpgram has an ethnographic museum that showcases the lifestyles and cultures of the people and tribals who live in this region. Additionally, there are shopping opportunities, camel rides, live pottery demonstrations, cultural events, and authentic village vibes for visitors to enjoy here. An excellent spot to buy local treasures and support local artisans. It also has a large open-air amphitheater with seating for 8000 people. Visit Timings: 11 am – 7 pm Visiting Duration: 2-3 hours Entry Charges for Indians/Foreigners: Rs.30/Rs.50

4).  Bagore ki Haveli, Udaipur

Dharohar Folk Dance is an evening cultural extravaganza held in the courtyard of Bagore ki Haveli, an old mansion turned museum. The glasswork and mural paintings on the Haveli make it very beautiful. However, the Haveli closes at 5:30 p.m., after which the entire area transforms into a cultural spectacle. The hour-long show is a captivating medley of Rajasthani music, dance & and puppetry presented by local artists dressed in vibrant local attire. Tickets sell out quickly, so arrive early to ensure a spot or book your tickets ahead of time. Show Timings: 7 pm Visiting Duration: 1.5 hrs Entry Charges for Indians/Foreigners: Rs.90/Rs.150

Alternate Tour Suggestions:

If one of the above attractions does not pique your interest, you can switch to one of the attractions listed below. Everything in Udaipur is close and easily accessible, so minor changes to the itinerary will not create any issues.

Saheliyon li Bari:   The Garden of Maids, sitting along the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake, offers lotus pools, crystalloid fountains, chiseled kiosks, marble pavilions, and elephant-shaped structures. The elegant garden was created by Maharana Sangram Singh and presented to his queen and her 48 maids. The queen along with her female companions used to come here for recreation.

Ahar Cenotaphs :   A cenotaph is an empty tomb or monument built to honor the deceased, in this case, the Maharajas of Udaipur. There are a total of 250 cenotaphs and 19 chhatris to commemorate the 19 maharajas who were cremated at the Ahar Cenotaphs. All of the cenotaphs in the Ahar Cemetery have exquisitely carved domes, charming statues, and columned pavilions.

Best Time To Visit?

Udaipur is best visited between October and March. The hotels would be quite pricey, though, as this is the busiest travel season for both locals and international travelers. In December and January, it may get a little chilly, but nothing a couple of layers can’t fix. The months of April and May are unbearably hot, and the monsoon season lasts from July to September . However, Udaipur is spectacular during the rainy season, with the city and its outskirts covered in lush greenery. If you go in September, you may be able to avoid the worst of the rain.

How to Reach Udaipur?

Since Udaipur is an internationally renowned tourist attraction, you should have no trouble finding modes of transport that fit your needs and price range. Before planning your trip, make sure to check the most recent travel advisories, road conditions, and schedules. Make your transport arrangements ahead of time.

  • By Air: The Maharana Pratap Airport, also known as Dabok Airport, serves Udaipur. Fly into this airport from major Indian cities such as Delhi , Mumbai , Jaipur, and others. The airport is approximately 22 kilometers from the main city, and you can take a taxi to the city center.
  • By train: The two main railway stations in Udaipur are Udaipur City Railway Station and Rana Pratap Nagar Railway Station. Udaipur is conveniently linked to most parts of India by train, with multiple alternatives from major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur , and Ahmedabad, among others.
  • By Road: Udaipur is accessible by road thanks to an extensive network of national and state highways. You can drive to Udaipur from nearby cities and states. Buses (state-run and private) leave from cities such as Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Mumbai. You can also travel to Udaipur by car or taxi.

How to Get Around in Udaipur?

Many attractions of Udaipur are within walking distance of one another. Keep in mind that traffic in Udaipur can be clogged up, particularly in popular tourist areas, so plan your journey accordingly.

  • Walking: The old city of Udaipur is very walkable, and this can be a great way to explore the narrow streets, markets, and famous landmarks. Walking is the best way to get a feel of the old city and its intriguing culture.
  • Auto Rickshaws: They are the city’s most affordable mode of transportation and can be found almost anywhere. They work best for short distances within city limits. Before beginning your ride, negotiate the fare or request that the driver use the meter. They can also be rented through Uber and Ola
  • Cycle Rickshaws:  In some areas of the city, cycle rickshaws are an option for a more leisurely and environmentally friendly ride. They are slower but provide a one-of-a-kind experience.
  • Taxis: They are more comfortable and convenient, especially if you are traveling with a group or have a lot of luggage. You can book them through your hotel or Uber and Ola. Ride-hailing apps are the best option to avoid being charged extra.
  • Car Rentals: If you prefer the flexibility and independence of having your own vehicle, you can rent a car with a driver. This is particularly helpful if you intend to visit attractions outside of the city. Do not attempt to drive because traffic in most Indian cities is chaotic.
  • Guided Tours: Joining guided tours , whether walking tours or organized day trips, can be a convenient way to explore Udaipur’s attractions with the insight of a local guide.
  • Bicycle Rentals: If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a bicycle and explore the city at your own pace. The relatively flat terrain of Udaipur makes it great for cycling.
  • Two-wheelers: You can easily rent them from shops after putting down a deposit. They are inexpensive and provide you with flexibility. However, driving anything on Indian roads is never easy.

The clear skies and moderate temperatures during winter make it an ideal time for outdoor activities and sightseeing.  While winter is the peak tourist season, Udaipur also experiences a brief but vibrant monsoon season from July to September . During this time, the city is adorned with lush greenery, and the lakes brim with water. The occasional showers add a refreshing touch to the ambiance, making it a unique time to witness Udaipur's beauty. However, it's essential to be prepared for intermittent rains and humidity during the monsoon. Summer, from April to June , is considered the off-season for tourism in Udaipur due to the scorching temperatures that can soar above 40°C. The intense heat makes outdoor activities challenging, and the dry weather creates a parched landscape. Travelers are advised to plan their visit during the more comfortable and visually appealing winter or monsoon seasons to make the most of their Udaipur experience.

In this article, we share our 13 favorite attractions , eats , and other places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days—plus where to stay in Udaipur , how to get to Udaipur from Jaisalmer (and Jodhpur), the top things to do in Udaipur, and much more!

Why three days? Well, we’ve found that that’s about the average length of time travelers we’ve spoken to plan to stay in Udaipur.

After a few days in this evocative and one-of-a-kind place, however, don’t be surprised if you find yourself hungry for more!

🔥 Hot Tip 🔥

If you want to make the very best use of your time and money, we recommend booking one of these city tours with a local guide.

Udaipur is a unique and fascinating city with a rich heritage and we feel like we definitely short-changed ourselves by not doing one during our stay.

places to visit in Udaipur map

Find all of the 13 amazing places to visit in Udaipur, India on our custom, interactive map, above. Read on to learn about each one in more detail (and why they’re worth your time!).

We’ve included this map to give you a sense of the location of all the places to visit in Udaipur included in this article.

The center of the city is very walkable, though tuk-tuks (auto-rickshaws) are available near the waterfront as well as deeper into town.

udaipur things to do explore

No matter how you end up in Udaipur, it’s hard to deny that this is one great city to wander around in for a few days.

While certainly showing its age (much of the city dates from the 16th century, after all), Udaipur is a beautiful place built around a handful of lakes and surrounded by dramatic mountains.

Owing to its historic city center and dramatic scenery, Udaipur has served as the setting for a number of Hollywood and Bollywood movies, most notably the James Bond movie Octopussy , which they really play up in these parts. In fact, a number of venues offer daily screenings of the film.

Udaipur is also popular for weddings and honeymoons and is often billed as the most romantic city in India.

Walking around central Udaipur not only gives you a sense of the history and culture of this amazing city, but also offers endless opportunities for getting lost in its bustling streets and winding alleyways.

And the best part is, you never know what you may find around the next corner…

places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days elephant traffic

Chatting up the locals in the city center was also one of our favorite things to do in Udaipur.

This part of town receives a lot of international tourists, and local residents here seem to speak a lot more English than we’ve encountered in other cities across India.

But the best part about chatting up locals in central Udaipur might just be the relaxed atmosphere and absence of the high pressure touts we’ve encountered in places like Agra, Varanasi, and Delhi.

school children in Udaipur India

Take the time to tour one the multitude of Havelis (historic mansions) in Udaipur. The city is full of these beautiful places!

Or, better yet, stay the night in one!

We recommend checking out Jagat Niwas Palace (from US$113) for the ultimate 17th century Udaipur Haveli stay in the heart of the the city, just steps away from the City Palace. Jagat Niwas features Ayurvedic massages, horseback riding, folk puppet shows, and one of the best lake-side restaurants in Udaipur!

Just northwest of Jagat Niwas, check out Amet Haveli (from US$119) for another excellent heritage stay near the center of Udaipur’s best attractions. Amet Haveli may be a bit farther away from the action than Jagat Niwas, but the reward is amazing views of the City Palace and Udaipur skyline.

We stayed in Dream Heaven Haveli and enjoyed our time there. However, that was a few years ago and reviews aren’t so stellar these days. But if you’re looking for an economical place to stay (rooms start at US$14/night) near the heart of the action with A/C and phenomenal city views, Dream Heaven Haveli might fit the bill.

places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days City Palace

Ghats are those steps you see in a lot of river and lake towns in India running down into the water. Some are holy and/or historic places, while others just make for a stunning place to rest.

Ghats are some of the best places to visit in Udaipur for spectacular views and unique insights into daily life.

Four ghats you should definitely check out are Gangaur Ghat (the “ultimate sunset point” in town), Ambrai (Hanuman) Ghat for stunning city views and delicious food, Laal Ghat , a holy site for pilgrims and devotees, and Nav Ghat , the city’s boat dockyard.

Short on time? See the ghats by boat!

Taking a guided ghat tour and boat ride offers a unique perspective on this ancient and atmospheric city on the lake.

One important thing to note about Lake Pichola is the variable water level. We visited Udaipur toward the end of the monsoon season when the lakes were at their deepest. Yet, large portions of the lake actually dry out for much of the year, making for a popular recreational area for residents (see below).

Hit the weather and the crowds right and you might very well discover that the ghats end up being among your very favorite places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days!

udaipur in dry season

You can’t spend three days in Udaipur without visiting one of the most historic and beloved places to visit in Udaipur – the City Palace.

Heck, the palace is so conspicuous, it’s virtually impossible to escape a view of it!

The City Palace is actually a number of separate palaces constructed over a span of 400 years. The entire complex is now a museum open to the public, except for Shiv Niwas Palace and the Fateh Prakash Palace which both have been converted into heritage hotels.

Get your tickets at the door or skip the line and  reserve a tour in advance online .

inside Udaipur City Palace things to do

The palace houses a number of artifacts, paintings, and decorative furniture once used by its former royal residents.

City Palace is one of the top places to visit in Udaipur, so make sure you buy your tickets as soon as you arrive in town.

3 days in udaipur city palace

Part of our City Palace ticket included access to the palace boat docks from where you can catch a ferry out to Jag Mandir , one of Udaipur’s famed lake palaces.

While it’s not the Lake Palace ( Jag Niwas ), it’s certainly worth the journey and the time strolling around the grounds.

There is a cafe operated by a local hotel group within the palace courtyard. However, if you’ve spent the last month backpacking around India like we have, you may find the cafe prices a bit hard to stomach.

taj lake palace places to visit in udaipur india

From the ferry to (and from) Jag Mandir, we got a close-up view of the famous Taj Lake Palace Hotel (not to be confused with the Taj Mahal in Agra or Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, of course).

Scenes from 007’s Octopussy were filmed here and now it’s an exclusive hotel.

For many visitors, Lake Pichola is a highlight of their visit and one of their favorite places to visit in Udaipur.

Celebrating a special occasion? Want to tour Jagmandir Island Palace in style? Dine like royalty on Jagmandir Island with this romantic and personalized 3-course dinner overlooking the sparkling lights of historic Udaipur. Boat transfer and land transfer from your hotel included.

Mehndi tattoo india

If you’ve got three days in Udaipur, you might as well get some ink done.

Mehndi art “tattoos” aren’t really tattoos at all, but intricate ink (henna) designs that fade after about two weeks.

mehndi tattoo in India

Lori’s Mehndi, a day or two later, after the paste had dried and fallen off. We were pretty impressed with the work.

Make sure you choose a reputable place to get your Mehndi done, as less scrupulous parlors across India have been known to use caustic chemicals that can leave permanent scars. It’s also worth noting that some people have reported allergic reactions to the henna dye. With all that said, Lori’s experience was very positive.

jagdish temple 3 days places to visit in udaipur india

Jagdish Temple  was located very close to our guesthouse, but we waited to visit it until our last full day.

Call it temple burnout or just bigger fish to fry in Udaipur, but Jagdish ended up at the bottom of our shortlist of things to do in Udaipur.

But we were so glad we did fit it into our visit and encourage others to visit as well.

Jagdish Temple is not to be missed if you happen to be in this part of town. It quickly became one of our favorite places to visit in Udaipur.

jagdish temple 3 days in udaipur india

We enjoyed viewing the Monsoon Palace at sunset every evening from our guesthouse balcony. And eagerly waited for a weather window to visit the famous landmark.

Even if you’ve only got three days in Udaipur, the Monsoon Palace is so iconic, we still recommend you try to fit a visit in. The best way to do so in a limited timeframe is by going with a tour.

There are a number of tour companies in the city center that offer day trips, and many guesthouses and hostels can also arrange a trip as well. You can even book a private sunset tour of the Monsoon Palace online!

If you aren’t able to squeeze a visit in, not to worry. There are still plenty of other places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days!

Places to Visit in Udaipur in 3 Days – Favorite Bites

dream heaven guesthouse places to visit in Udaipur

We found Udaipur to be a most agreeable place in no small part due to the food!

Udaipur has a great selection of cuisines and the food is top-notch, not to mention that the views at some of the places we ate were worth the cost of the meal, alone.

Here are a few of our favorite eating places to visit in Udaipur:

Chandni at Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel topped our list of favorite places to visit in Udaipur for dinner — a bit pricey for India (ran us around US$13 and we generally share a thali or entree/appetizer) but well worth it.

The dining room is in a really cool setting surrounded by the palace with a great view of the lake.

The restaurant serves Indian, Continental, and Chinese dishes, but they are known for their local specialties.

Ambrai was perhaps our second favorite place to eat in Udaipur, with great views of the city, and within a short walk of our guesthouse.

Also a bit pricey by India standards (US$10 splitting a meal), but worth it. Most people seem to visit Ambrai for the atmosphere and the tasty tandors!

These two cafes are right next to each other, offering good coffee, tasty pastries, sandwiches, and European breakfast offerings that were better than most attempts we’ve come across in India.

If you’re from Europe or North America and missing a taste of “home,” these two places might quench your craving.

Learn to Cook Your Favorite Indian Dishes in Udaipur!

There are a number of excellent cooking class options available for visitors to Udaipur. This private 4-hour Indian cooking class is one of the best values we’ve seen. We really wish they had this when we were staying in Udaipur!

Note to our readers: Please be aware that train and bus information in India changes frequently. Please let us know in the comments below if there’s anything in this section in need of an update. Many thanks in advance!

Taking the Train from Jaisalmer or Jodhpur to Udaipur

Udaipur is located in the northwestern state of Rajasthan, about 250 miles southwest of Jaipur.

Coming from Jaisalmer, it wasn’t immediately clear how to get to Udaipur, as there is no direct rail link between the two cities, which we found incredibly surprising given India’s vast network of rail.

Even if we had backtracked to Jodhpur, there’s still no direct service, even though Jodhpur and Udaipur constitute two of the most significant population centers in the state and are only about 150 miles apart.

We did find, however, that if you wanted to travel exclusively by rail , you can take the overnight train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, then hop the train to Marwar Junction, change for Ajmer Junction, then on to Udaipur — a very long journey for a very short distance!

Or…better yet…you can do what we ended up doing and take the overnight train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur and catch the early morning express bus to Udaipur , which only took us about five hours and cost far less than piecing together a rail journey.

And best of all, it’s a surprisingly scenic ride over mountains and through jungle (more on that below).

Taking the Express Bus from Jodhpur to Udaipur

In India, the government buses generally seem to be the safest based on our own experience and from what people have told us. We’ve found them to be reliable and generally on-time as well.

To catch the government bus in from Jodhpur to Udaipur, we got off the train from Jaisalmer a stop early at  Raika Bagh , rather than taking the train all the way to Jodhpur station. Raika Bagh is where the government bus stand is located .

From the train station, it’s less than a five-minute walk out and around to the bus stand.

Our overnight train from Jaisalmer arrived at 5:10am and the bus to Udaipur was scheduled to leave between 5:30am and 6:00am. We purchased tickets for the bus at the bus stand right before departure, and were satisfied with the level of comfort and safety of our bus journey.

Private Transfer from Jodhpur to Udaipur

If that all sounds like to much work (or you just don’t want to mess with a 5:30am departure), there are plenty of private shuttle options available too.

This top-rated private shuttle from Jodhpur to Udaipur is an excellent option for US$45 and even includes a stop-off at the Ranakpur Temple .

Hi David, you wrote an excellent blog! 🙂 I need a suggestion on which boat tour you opted for on the city’s boat dockyard? I am looking for a decent boat ride in lake Pichola and please mention the price also.

Hi Ravi, thanks for your comment! When we visited a few years back, there weren’t nearly as many options for lake tours as now. Our boat tour was included in the price of the City Palace entry fee, and we were simply told afterwards to head to the landing to catch the boat. If we were visiting in 2021, we’d combine the boat tour with a city tour and probably do something like this one .

Thanks for sharing it with me David. I Will definitely go through the itinerary. Grey langurs image is great. Did you go near to them?

Glad to hear it, Ravi. No, we stayed a distance away. But they were fun to watch!

What is the Best Time to Visit Udaipur?

' src=

What is the best time to visit Udaipur? Is March a good time to visit? Or August? Or should you plan a trip in the winters?

These are just a few questions that I often get asked when someone is planning a trip to Udaipur.

And since I have been to this city multiple times now in different seasons and months and have a pretty good idea of what you can expect here in the different months.

So here’s all about the best time to visit Udaipur, what kind of weather you can expect here, and other important details for planning your trip.

About Udaipur

City of Palace, Udaipur

Popularly known as the City of Lakes, Udaipur city is full of beautiful palaces, havelis, and temples.

Surrounded amidst the Aravali Ranges, the city boasts of natural scenic beauty along with stunningly gorgeous lakes which attract people from all over the world.

Udaipur is known for its heritage and culture and is prominent city in Rajasthan for performing arts and crafts.

Due to its beautiful sights, Udaipur is also one of the top romantic destinations in the world and is often called the ‘Venice of the East’.

Apart from the five beautiful lakes that you can find here, Udaipur is surrounded by several amazing destinations as well. Kumbalgarh, Ranakpur, Mount Abu, etc. are just a few amazing and unique places that you can easily reach from Udaipur.

When you are planning a visit to Udaipur, you have to keep a lot of things in mind such as budget, flight costs, activities, and so on. Different months or seasons are ideal for different groups of travellers and activities.

This is why we have listed down the best time to visit Udaipur for different budget and activities.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur for Sightseeing

The average temperature in Udaipur for major part of the year is between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. The climate of Jaipur is affected by the surrounding Aravali ranges so, it can fluctuate between hot and cold here at times.

A visit to Udaipur in summer means that the temperature in Udaipur would be around 40 degrees Celsius and it can be slightly hot to explore the city during the day.

Planning a visit to Udaipur in monsoon season is great as you can see lush greenery surrounding the city. However, due to continuous rainfall, it can be hard to enjoy boating in lakes or other sightseeing activities.

Winter is the peak time to visit Udaipur and personally, I wouldn’t suggest at all for sightseeing because the city is crowded with tourists at this time.

According to me, the best time to visit Udaipur is October, November, February, and March. During these months, the weather is pleasant and there aren’t a lot of tourists around so, you can explore the city at leisure.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur for Weather

Well, it is no surprise that Udaipur becomes extremely hot for visiting in the summer season. So, to enjoy the weather in Udaipur, I would suggest you to plan your visit in the winter months of November to March.

The city experiences a cool temperature at this time with low chances of rainfall. But be prepared as the nights can become quite chilly during these months.

December and January are the touristy months due to the Christmas and New Year celebrations. As a result, visitors from all over India come here to spend time. If you are trying to avoid the crowds, then stay clear of these two months for a visit to this city.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur for Budget-Travelers

Personally, I am a budget travel and tend to backpack a lot so I understand that money can be a big concern for a lot of travellers out there. Fortunately, Udaipur is a budget-friendly destination regardless of which month you choose to visit.

But the summer season is the off-season to visit Udaipur due to the extremely hot climate so, you can end up getting great deals on hotels and flights at this time. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated during the summers to truly enjoy your visit here.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur for Activities

Udaipur offers a lot of fun activities to do for the tourists such as boating, camel rides, jeep safari, shopping, and so on. However, you cannot do all these activities throughout the year. Yes, festivals and shopping is available throughout the year but most other activities are not.

If you wish to enjoy activities such as boating, camel rides, jeep safari, and so on then plan a visit between October and June.

During the monsoon season, boating and wildlife sanctuaries are usually not operational so you might miss out on these activities.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur for Festivals

There are lots of amazing festivals and events held at Udaipur every year that draw tourists from all over the world.

But the main festivals that one cannot miss out in Udaipur are Shipgram Utsav, Gangaur Festival, Diwali, Holi, and Mewar Festival.

These festivals usually take place in the months of October to April. You can plan a visit to coincide with the dates of these festivals and witness how locals celebrate in Udaipur.

Best Season to Visit Udaipur

Monsoon Palace, Udaipur

Generally, there are three seasons to plan a visit to a destination – high season, shoulder season, and off-season. Here is a brief look into what you can expect during each season in Udaipur.

High Season (October – February)

Udaipur has become a popular tourist destination in the recent years due to several marketing campaigns. As a result, a lot of people feel that the city has lost its charm now.

The months of October to February are the most crowded due to the holiday season and the city remains filled with tourists until March when the weather starts becoming a little warm.

If you are planning a weekend trip from delhi to Udaipur to enjoy the beautiful sights here while enjoying a cool and pleasant climate, then this is the ideal time to visit.

The temperature in Udaipur ranges between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius, making it the perfect weather for a vacation. This is one of the reasons why so many tourists come here during this time.

Also, this is the perfect time to enjoy a range of activities in Udaipur such as boating, camel rides, wildlife sightseeing, shopping, and so on.

You can also enjoy the Navratri and Dussehra celebrations in October and the Diwali celebrations in October/November.

There is also the three-day Kumbalgarh Festival in December, Shilpgram Art Fair in November/December, Udaipur World Music Festival in February, and many more events to attend during this season.

But since this is the peak season, the prices of hotels, flights, activities, etc. is quite high at this time.

Shoulder Season (September and March)

Personally, my favourite time to visit any destination, shoulder season is great for anyone who wants to avoid the crowd and enjoy a budget trip to Udaipur.

Most of the tourist destinations including the beautiful palaces, forts, etc. are empty during this time allowing you to explore at your own pace.

Moreover, you can enjoy festivals such as Holi, Mewar Festival, and Gangaur Festival during these months. Mewar Festival is a major festival of Rajasthan and the entire Udaipur city is covered in colors and festivity during this time.

One of the best things about visiting Udaipur in shoulder season is that you get huge discounts on flights, hotels, etc. here. The weather is slightly warm and humid but not unbearable and the no-crowd definitely is an added bonus.

Off Season (April – August)

The worst time to visit Udaipur has to be the summer and the peak monsoon season which is why it is considered the off season here.

Summers in Udaipur are hot with temperature between 28 and 40 degrees Celsius. The rainfall during monsoon does bring a little respite but it makes the city humid and hot as well.

Moreover, you have to wait for the rainfall to stop before you can venture out to explore the streets of Udaipur.

In terms of sightseeing, summers is a bit better but the scorching heat can make you tired and dehydrated quickly. In the end, it depends more on what you wish to experience in Udaipur.

If you want to admire the city with greenery and filled lakes, then monsoon is a good time to visit. In the summers, you can still enjoy the activities such as wildlife sightseeing, boating, etc. which makes it a decent time to visit.

Most importantly, you get amazing deals on hotels and flights during the low/off season. So, if you are on a budget trip, then this is a great time to consider for your Udaipur trip.

Climate of Udaipur

Climate of Udaipur is divided into three major parts – Winters, Summers, and Monsoon. Visitors have access to different activities and sights during each climate. We have discussed what you can do during each climate of Udaipur below.

Udaipur in Summer

Summers arrive in Udaipur in April and continue till June. It can get extremely hot during the day time with average temperature ranging between 28 and 40 degrees Celsius.

Hot winds blow throughout the day, making it extremely difficult to explore the city. The weather cools down during the evening and at night. This is why it is advised to not visit Udaipur in summers as you risk dehydration while sightseeing.

But summer also means that most hotels offer rooms at half rates or even lesser price. So, if you are looking to enjoy a night at the luxury hotels here or wish to explore Udaipur without the crowds, then this is a great time to visit.

Make sure you keep yourself hydrated and wear a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the heat.

Udaipur in Monsoon

Udaipur experiences monsoon in the months of July to September and the average temperature ranges around 25 to 35 degrees Celsius.

Since the city receives scanty rainfall, it is a good time to visit as the lakes fill up and the mountain ranges around Udaipur turn lush green. Visitors can enjoy rooftop views from the restaurants here and can go on romantic boat rides as well.

It can be a little humid and hot during the day but it becomes chilly at night so, do carry a jacket with you.

Another great thing about visiting Udaipur in monsoon is that most sightseeing spots are open and you still get amazing deals on hotels and flights. Moreover, there aren’t many tourists around at this time so you can enjoy your time in peace here.

Udaipur in Winter

Starting from October and continuing till March, winter is undoubtedly the best time to visit Udaipur. The city experiences a bright and sunny climate during the daytime with extremely chilly nights.

The temperature in Udaipur in winter ranges between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for sightseeing and activities.

Visitors can enjoy all the outdoor activities during this time including boat rides, strolls in the colorful streets of Udaipur, exploring the palaces and temples, and a lot more.

Also, you can event attend the festivals and events such as Shilgram Art Fair, Kumbalgarh Festival, Diwali, Dussehra, Udaipur World Music, etc. during this time.

The only drawback is that since it is a popular time to visit Udaipur, the prices of the hotels and activities would be high too. Make sure you book your trip in advance to avoid last-minute prices.

Picchola Lake

June marks the beginning of monsoon season. So, the weather in Udaipur in June is both hot and humid.

This is definitely not a good time to visit Udaipur for sightseeing as it becomes very difficult to explore during the hot and humid weather. However, you do get amazing deals and discounts during this month.

You can also plan a visit in July that receives moderate amount of rainfall. The temperature decreases a little so, you will experience a slightly cooler yet humid weather here.

You can still enjoy sightseeing and activities around here with fewer crowds. You can also get cheapest hotels and flights during this time.

Udaipur City

This is the wettest month to visit Udaipur and is not a good time for sightseeing. You will end up cooped inside your hotel due to the rainfall which can disrupt your Udaipur itinerary.

That being said, it is a good time to visit to attend the Teej festival, Hariyali Amavasya Festival, and the Gangaur Festival that takes place in July/August. Plus, you get cheap hotels and flight tickets in this month.

September is the second wettest month in Udaipur with average temperature below 28 degrees Celsius.

This might hamper your travel plans a bit but if you don’t mind a little rainfall, then this is a great time to visit Udaipur. All the lakes are filled at this time and there is lush greenery surrounding the city.

In October, it finally stops raining in Udaipur and the winter season begins in this region. Days are warm and humid while the nights are a bit chilly.

Due to the pleasant weather, it is a good time for sightseeing and activities and you will see more tourists coming to the city.

Visitors also get a chance to celebrate festivals such as Dussehra, Navratri, Diwali, and World Living Heritage Festival in Udaipur.

November is a great month to visit the popular places in Udaipur such as the lakes, palaces, forts, etc. as the weather remains cool and dry throughout the month. The temperature ranges between 25 and 15 degrees Celsius.

This is the start of the peak season in Udaipur so, you can expect to pay higher price for hotels, flights, tours, and so on.

December is the best month to visit Udaipur as the weather is cool and pleasant at this time. The average temperature in Udaipur in December is below 20 degrees Celsius which makes it an ideal time for sightseeing.

Moreover, you can enjoy several activities in Udaipur this month such as boating, camel rides, wildlife sightseeing, and so on.

You also have festivals such as Shilpgram Art Fair, Kumbalgarh Festival, and so on during this month to attend in Udaipur.

But one thing to keep in mind, due to Christmas and New Year celebrations, prices for hotels, flights, and tours can become a little hiked during this month. So, make sure you book your trip in advance.

More Guides: Places to See and Visit in Jaisalmer

The cost of flights, activities, hotels, etc. varies in Udaipur depending on the weather and the month you visit. So, now you can plan a trip to Udaipur with all these details in your hands.

If you wish to enjoy Udaipur in good weather and don’t mind the crowds, then the winter months between October and March are the best time to visit Udaipur. You will also be able to enjoy Christmas and New Year celebrations if you plan a trip in December or January.

To enjoy the city of Udaipur with fewer crowds, monsoon season is the perfect time to visit. But be careful of the lakes as the water level would be higher during this time.
