20 Fun Things to do in Allentown, PA

Fun Things to do in Allentown, PA

Located in the Lehigh Valley of eastern Pennsylvania, Allentown is the third-largest city in Pennsylvania. Once an industrial center near both Philadelphia and New York, the city has now reinvented itself and there are many fun things to do in Allentown, PA, and the surrounding Lehigh County.

Here are a few of my favorite things to do in this corner of Pennsylvania.

America on Wheels

America on Wheels is one of the most fun things to do in Allentown PA

Allentown has a rich automotive history, including being home to one of the first gas-powered cars ever made. Drawing on this history,  America on Wheels showcases the history of wheeled transportation from the earliest days of the automobile through futuristic designs.

Highlights of this fantastic museum include the 1889 Nadig Gas-Powered Carriage, a fantastic collection of Mack Trucks made in Allentown, and a nice selection of bicycles, motorcycles, and pedal cars.

Lehigh Valley Heritage Center

The Lehigh Valley Heritage Center is one of the first things to do in Lehigh County, PA

If you want to uncover the history of the region, one of the best things to do in Allentown is to visit the  Lehigh Valley Heritage Center . This museum focuses on the history of Lehigh County and serves as its historical society museum.

Visitors can learn about the people and industries that impacted the area and the world. Whether you’ve lived in the area your whole life or have never been before, this museum offers a great overview of Lehigh County.

In addition to the museum, the museum operates about a half-dozen historical buildings around the county, many of which have regular hours in the summer hours.

Lehigh Valley Zoo

The Lehigh Valley Zoo is located north of Allentown and is a great destination for animal lovers in the region. This 29-acre zoo is surrounded by Trexler Nature Preserve (more on that further down the list) and was founded in 1906.

Today, the zoo is home to more than 300 animals from 125 different species. Highlights of any visit include the giraffe, crocodiles, and kangaroos.

During the holiday season, the zoo is home to the fantastic Winter Light Spectacular .

If you are looking for the best things to do near Allentown, PA, you won’t want to miss this zoo.

Allentown Art Museum

The Allentown Art Museum is one of the best things to do in Allentown, Pennsylvania for art lovers

If you love art, you won’t want to miss the Allentown Art Museum . While this museum might sound like it focuses on local art, it only purchases local pieces that meet their standards. Instead, their 13,000-item collection is filled with pieces of art dating back hundreds of years and representing styles and cultures from around the world.

Visitors especially enjoy the museum’s great collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings and sculptures, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed library (which was rebuilt here after being removed from one of his homes), and the museum’s Keith Haring paintings.

Lehigh County Covered Bridges

Visiting the Covered Bridges of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania

Lehigh County is home to six historic covered bridges . Five of these bridges are located north of Allentown while one is located south of the city.

Of all the counties in Pennsylvania. Lehigh Valley does one of the best jobs protecting and beautifying their covered bridges. In fact, four of the five covered bridges in the county are located within county parks, which makes them easy to visit and photograph.

Mack Trucks Historical Museum

The Mack Trucks Museum is a great thing to do near Allentown, PA

The Mack Trucks Historical Museum is located in the company’s former testing facility. While Mack Trucks no longer has a large presence in Allentown, the museum showcases the history of the company from its earliest stages through the present day.

Visitors can take a free tour of this museum and see some of the oldest Mack Trucks in existence, modern designs, and even trucks used in movies.

Li’l-Le-hi Trout Nursery

Li'l-Le-Hi Trout Nursery is a fun family thing to do in the Lehigh Valley

Located south of Allentown, The Li’l-Le-Hi Trout Nursery is a public park, making Allentown the only city in the country with a fish nursery as one of their public parks.

The fish here are part of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s trout stocking program, and the trout here are raised to be stocked in the surrounding streams.

Visitors can tour the Li’l-Le-Hi Trout Nursery utilizing the signage around the park and feed the thousands of fish of every size that occupy the tanks here.

Bake Oven Knob

View overlooking Bake Oven Knob along the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania

The Appalachian Trail cuts across the northern reaches of Lehigh County and one of the most popular hikes in the region is to Bake Oven Knob , which sits right on the border with Carbon County .

From the parking area, it’s a little under half a mile to this fantastic vista. The view faces towards the east, which means it’s a great spot for sunrise. However, such a commanding view is quite worth seeing no matter the time of day.

If you are looking for an outdoorsy thing to do near Allentown, don’t miss the easy hike to Bake Oven Knob.

Two people on the Newton Chairs at the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown Pennsylvania

If you’re looking for things to do in Allentown with kids, the Da Vinci Science Center is a fantastic spot.

While this museum is geared towards children but parents will definitely enjoy this spot as well.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs

Lehigh Valley IronPigs are a great summertime activity in Allentown

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs are the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies and play their games at Coca-Cola Park on the outskirts of Allentown.

This is an excellent stadium with a great atmosphere and seating that’s close to the action. Plus, since these players are just one step below the major leagues, you know you’ll see some great baseball.

Haines Mill Museum

The exterior of the Haines Mill Museum in Allentown Pennsylvania

The Haines Mill Museum is a historic grist mill in Allentown. It was constructed in 1840 and remained in operation until 1957.

This four-story structure is beautiful to see from the outside and tours of the inside are offered on select weekends. Inside, visitors can see a water-powered turbine and the rolling equipment used to make the mill’s products.

If you want to learn about the history of agriculture in PA, this is a great spot to check out in Allentown, PA.

Museum of Indian Culture

The Museum of Indian Culture offers a great look into the history of the Lehigh Valley

Located adjacent to Li’l-Le-Hi Trout Nursery is the Museum of Indian Culture . This museum highlights the Native American tribes that once lived in the region and offers a nice look into how they lived. The museum also features Native American items from throughout the country that showcases their artistry in both works of art and everyday items.

The Museum of Indian Culture also hosts a variety of events throughout the year that offer a chance to experience different aspects of Native American culture.

Dorney Park

If you love amusement parks, you won’t want to miss Dorney Park , which is definitely one of the best family-friendly things to do in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The history of Dorney Park dates back to the 1880s, and it is one of only 13 trolley parks that still operate today.

The park is home to seven roller coasters, a waterpark known as Wildwater Kingdom, and a total of more than 60 rides. The park also operates a popular Halloween event.

Coplay Cement Kilns

The Coplay Kilns in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania

Coplay, Pennsylvania was once the cement capital of the region, and the Coplay Cement Kilns are one of the last relics of this industry.

One of the most interesting ruins in Pennsylvania , the Coplay Kilns sit in the middle of a small park and give visitors the chance to learn more about the Portland cement industry that once thrived here. While visitors are prevented from getting too close to the kilns thanks to fencing, it’s still interesting to peer into these industrial ruins.

Trexler Nature Preserve

Trailhead in the Trexler Nature Preserve near Allentown PA

Trexler Nature Preserve is a 1,100-acre county park that offers some unique hiking opportunities. In addition to being home to two of Lehigh County’s covered bridges and the Lehigh Valley Zoo, the preserve is also home to herds of elk and bison that can be seen from several of the preserve’s hiking trails.

In addition to miles of hiking trails, Trexler is home to several miles of mountain biking and horseback riding trails.

Fegley’s Brew Works

Grab a drink at Fegleys while visiting Allentown, PA

If you love beer, you won’t want to miss Fegley’s Brew Works in downtown Allentown. Fegley’s began in Bethlehem in 1998 and opened their Allentown location in 2007.

Fegley Brew Works is one of the most popular breweries in the Lehigh Valley and offers their great brews and food at their location in the city. If you are looking for a great place to eat in Allentown, don’t miss Fegley’s Brew Works.

Lehigh Valley Phantoms

Nighttime at the PPL Center in Allentown PA

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are a minor league hockey team for the Philadelphia Flyers and play their games at the PPL Center in downtown Allentown.

The Phantoms season lasts from early October through mid-April. If you find yourself looking for something to do in Lehigh County in the winter, don’t miss a Phantoms game.

Lock Ridge Park

The ruins of Lock Ridge Furnace near Alburtis, PA.

Lock Ridge Park is a beautiful park built around the ruins of an iron ore furnace on the outskirts of Alburtis, PA.

While iron was made here since the mid-1800s, the furnaces that still stand are from the early 20th century. They smelted their last iron ore in 1921.

Today, the shell of the furnaces remain and are really neat to explore and photograph. You can also take tours of the site on summer weekends.

For those looking for a bit more to do, there is a nice walking trail through the park.

Hassen Creek Nature Trail

Hassan Creek Falls in Lehigh County PA

The Hassen Creek Nature Trail is located a short distance east of downtown Allentown and is one of my favorite places to go hiking in the Lehigh Valley.

This trail is relatively short (only about a mile roundtrip), and while it does have a bit of elevation gain and loss, it’s great for the whole family.

The highlight of the trail is the 10-12 foot waterfall that flows over a broken dam once used to impound Hassen Creek for a cement factory. As you hike the trail, make sure to keep your eyes out for signs that offer a bit of history about the area and for the ruins of several structures.

Yocco’s

Eating at Yocco's is a must do thing in Lehigh County, PA

No list of things to do in Allentown, PA would be complete without mentioning Yocco’s . This Allentown chain claims to be “The Hot Dog King,” and they have half-a-dozen locations around the region.

Yocco’s is a local icon, and like many such places, residents have strong opinions about this small chain. Some love it, while others hate it.

If you’ve never been to Yocco’s, it’s worth eating there at least once to see what the fuss is all about. Order like many locals and get two hot dogs, pierogies, and chocolate milk.

Boring!!! The Lehigh Valley has a helluva lot more going on than whay you posted…

There are a ton more great things. I only posted about half of the area in this post. I’ll post more later.

I have also traveled and photographed those wonderful, historic bridges. Your newsletter allows me to plan my own adventures. Your pictures and information about PA are truly amazing, and very informative. I enjoy it very much.

You listed Bake Oven Knob, but neglected to mention Hawk Mt. Sanctuary, located about 35 miles northwest of Allentown. It is a significant migration point for raptors, especially in the fall. It has well developed trails and programs, and shouldn’t be missed if you are in this part of the state. I believe I have seen you discuss it in another listing, but you can’t mention Bake Oven without giving a nod to Hawke Mt.

It’s a great spot for sure. The reason I didn’t mention it was that I kept this article to things to do in Lehigh County, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is in Berks County. Worth the drive for sure, though.

Can’t wait to visit spots on this list, so many fun options I didn’t know about! Thank you!

Thanks, appreciate the ideas! Sorry so many people are rude, I guess they feel they have a right to be because they’re not seeing you face to face!

The Allentown Farmer’s Market at the Fairgrounds is worth a visit.

The Valley Preferred Cycling Center! One of the few remaining outdoor velodromes in the USA, hopefully this year will see the return of world-class athletes for the summer racing season.

I enjoyed reading through your list. Although I live in Georgia now, I grew up in Catasauqua and have introduced my children and grandchildren to Dorney Park, the fish hatchery and of course Yoccos. Looking forward to reading more articles on Pennsylvania.

I live within 20 minutes of most of these places. Definitely worth a long weekend visit for someone looking for a weekend getaway.

As a vineyard/winery owner in the Lehigh Valley, I would love to see you do a piece on the Lehigh Valley’s vibrant vineyard/wineries. We are a designated American viticultural area (AVA). There are several truly wonderful ESTATE vineyard/wineries, meaning they grow ALL of their grapes onsite and produce their wine only from those grapes.

If you do a piece, I would love to chat with you. Beware of “vineyard/wineries” that do not grow grapes, and sometimes do not make wine. The PA government has decided not to distinguish between true ESTATE vineyard/wineries and just businesses selling wine and other alcoholic beverages. ( WINOs, as we call them) Winery In Name Only.

I’m not a huge wine drinker, but I do need to cover wineries more. If I do, though, anywhere that makes their own wine is enough for me, just like breweries don’t typically grow their own hops and barley.

The market itself is impressively large. It occupies an expansive building with nine separate entrances around its perimeter that connect to a spacious parking lot.

Beyond farm-fresh fruits and veggies, there's a lot of food available to enjoy on-site, as well. Highlights include getting a pickle on a stick from New York Pickle, shoo-fly pie at the Amish Village Bake Shop, and old-fashioned sweets from Mink's Candies.

Hot tip: Vendors typically have peak inventory on Thursday night, making it the best time to shop. But if you're looking for a deal, visit in the late afternoon on Saturday, when vendors are trying to sell whatever they have left before the market closes that week.

14 Best Things to Do in Allentown, PA

' src=

The third-largest city in Pennsylvania behind both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Allentown lies in the Lehigh Valley along the winding river of the same name. Once an important industrial center, it has reinvented itself in recent times. It’s now known for its family-friendly attractions, sports events and local amusement park.

One of the first cities in the country to support American independence, it actually ended up hiding the Liberty Bell from the British during the American Revolutionary War. Afterwards, the opening of the Lehigh Canal saw the Queen City become a mining and manufacturing hub with its thriving industries helping to spark America’s Industrial Revolution.

Deindustrialization hit hard, however, in the seventies until the massively successful revitalization of the Central Business District in 2014 did much to reverse the city’s fortunes. Nowadays, visitors will find plenty of things to do in Allentown with its rich history, attractive outdoor areas and top-class concerts and sporting events in its modern PPL Center.

Founded in 1762 by William Allen, a successful businessman and the former mayor of Philadelphia, and named for him in 1838, Allentown transformed from a small community of Pennsylvania Dutch farmers into a marketing center for local farmers in the 1920s. Pa. cities claim top five spots, best places to retire

P ENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) – Eight Pennsylvania cities have been the named one of the best places to retire on a list of 25 by U.S. News and World Report and all top five cities are located in Pa.

These rankings were determined by surveying individuals nearing retirement age and those retirement age and older about what matters the most to them when looking for a home post-retirement. The methodology calculated for quantitative values such as affordability, health care quality, retiree taxes and the job market, as many retirees do not plan to exit the workforce entirely.

The survey also accounted for qualitative values such as how happy retirees feel living there taking into account crime rates, Air Quality Index and FEMA Risk Index. The weather temperateness and establishments-to-population ratio, or factors that are typically associated with the desirability of an area, were also taken into account.

These are the top five of the 2024 best places to retire in the nation:

#1 – Harrisburg, Pa.

The state’s capitol ranked it at number one citing the city’s availability of quality health care for seniors, with Harrisburg being in close proximity to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center , as well as the city being tax-friendly for retiree taxes.

Harrisburg has a population of just over 587,000, with 17.7% of the population being age 65 or older.

The median monthly mortgage cost for those looking to buy in Harrisburg is $945. For those looking to rent, it’s reported that the median monthly rent is $1,019.

The unemployment rate in Harrisburg is 8.3%.

Recreationally, Harrisburg offers residents a lot of options and even has an active nightlife. The Riverfront Park offers a venue for runners and bikers, as well as a place to walk with some amazing views. The city is also located near state forests for those interested in hiking or camping. Harrisburg is also home to a plethora of live music venues, theatres, museums, galleries and fine dining.

Located on the Susquehanna River in South Central Pennsylvania, Harrisburg is an easy driving distance to many large metro areas, including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Harrisburg is also only approximately 15 miles away from Hershey , the chocolate capital of the world, and home to the Hershey Bears ice hockey team.

#2 – Reading, Pa.

Home to the real-life Reading Railroad from the Monopoly board game, Reading is a small city nestled in southeastern Pennsylvania and is only a 90-minute drive from Philadelphia.

Reading ranked in at number two given its close proximity to nearby big-city health care, diversity and its many cultural attractions such as the Reading Pagoda , which has a 30-mile panoramic view and has been standing as a symbol of the city for over a century.

Reading also has its own hospital – Reading Hospital – which was first established in 1867. This hospital has 738 beds and is a non-profit teaching hospital associated with Tower Health, as well as a level one trauma center and certified stroke center.

#3 – Lancaster, Pa.

Also located in South East Pennsylvania is Lancaster , number three on the top places to retire.

While Lancaster is better known for its farmlands, Amish community and many farmers markets, the city secured its spot for its high marks in health care, low taxes and overall happiness of current residents.

Penn Medicine’s Lancaster General Health is located within the city and residents may also have the ability to access Philadelphia health-care providers with Philadelphia being only a 90-minute drive away.

The city has a population of about 550,000 people and 18% of the population is age 65 or older.

Home buyers can expect a median monthly mortgage cost of $1,000 and renters can expect to pay a median of $1,114 in monthly rent.

Lancaster has an unemployment rate of 8.1%.

It is one of the oldest inland cities in the U.S. having been settled in 1709 by German immigrants, who we came to know as the Pennsylvania Dutch.

For foodies, Lancaster has a growing scene with a diverse collection of cuisine. The city has recently seen an uptick in old warehouses and buildings being converted into restaurants and bars.

Lancaster also has a thriving water sports scene and is home to many hiking trails and is home to the Barnstormers baseball team.

#4 – Scranton, Pa.

Scranton is located in North East Pennsylvania and is only a two hour drive from New York City or Philadelphia, which helped this city secure the number four spot, appealing to retirees who want to be close to a major city but enjoy a small community feeling with more affordable housing costs and lower crime rates.

The proximity to New York and Philadelphia bolsters this city’s ranking for access to quality health care.

This city has the lowest median monthly mortgage and rent costs of the top five cities with home buyers paying about $783 and renters paying $834.

Scranton has a population of over 566,000 with 19.7% of the population being age 65 or older.

The city has an unemployment rate of 11%.

The Lackawanna County Courthouse , which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is located in Scranton and was the site of the first session of the 1902 Anthracite Coal Strike Commission .

The Lackawanna Heritage Trail, Sturgis Park and the Davis Trail at Nay Aug Park give retirees in this city a chance for outdoor adventure.

Scranton is home to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders baseball team and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins ice hockey team.

#5 – Allentown, Pa.

Allentown is the third-largest metro area in Pennsylvania, with a population of approximately 858,000 people. 18% of the population is age 65 or older. Residents of Allentown who were surveyed said that despite it’s size, the city retains the charm of a smaller town.

Located in North East Pennsylvania and only 90 miles from New York City and 60 miles from Philadelphia, Allentown’s proximity gives residents access to top-quality health care. Lehigh Valley Hospital is located on 17th Street in Allentown and the health network has many other locations within driving distance.

Allentown has a median monthly mortgage cost of $1,038 and a median monthly rent of $1,141.

The unemployment rate in Allentown is 9.9%.

With a reported average winter temperature of only 30.3 ° F from the National Climactic Data Center , Allentown is a haven for skiers with three ski resorts within a 30 mile radius – Blue Mountain Resort, Bear Creek Ski and Recreation Area and Spring Mountain Adventures.

The area also offers a number of family-centered activities, perfect for retirees with grandchildren, including the Liberty Bell Museum, the Allentown Art museum, the Da Vinci Science Center and the America On Wheels Museum.

Allentown is home to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs baseball team and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey team.

Today is the solar eclipse. Here's how to safely view it from south-central Pennsylvania

places to visit allentown pa

Today the solar eclipse will be visible - if it's not cloudy - in the sky over south-central Pennsylvania.

Adams, Lebanon and York counties are not in the path of totality, where the moon's shadow completely covers the sun, but observers in this area will see more than 90 percent of the solar eclipse if the weather conditions are favorable.

"This is the must-see astronomy event," Brian Lada, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.com said recently. "If you're going to see one, this is it."

Some school districts plan to take students outside to witness the celestial event . Others have called for an early dismissal or a virtual day.

It also has prompted changes to high school athletic schedules .

A few events are planned in the area.

What time is the solar eclipse in south-central Pennsylvania?

Times to view the solar eclipse will vary depending on where observers are located.

According to TimeandDate.com , here are the times to view the solar eclipse in south-central Pennsylvania:

  • Partial eclipse begins at 2:05 p.m.
  • Maximum eclipse begins at 3:21 p.m.
  • Partial eclipse ends at 4:33 p.m.

The best time to look at it will be 3:21 p.m.

Observers should look to the southwest, about halfway up in the sky, to see it, said Todd Ullery, planetarium director for the York County Astronomical Society and solar system ambassador for NASA.

Don't forget to wear proper eye protection − special solar glasses or welders glass No. 14 − while viewing it, he said.

An alternative to glasses is to take a colander outside and let the sunlight pass through the holes, Ullery said. View the shadow on the ground to see the crescents.

Watch a livestream of the solar eclipse

If you can't see the solar eclipse, you can watch the show through a USA Today livestream video.

How dark will the solar eclipse be? Path of totality gives you a much different experience

places to visit allentown pa

The long-anticipated total solar eclipse will arrive Monday afternoon and cover the skies over a large portion of the United States.

The total eclipse will appear in the skies above the U.S., all the way from southern Texas to northern Maine. The rare event will see the shadow of the moon cover a narrow strip of land in darkness in the middle of the day.

The total eclipse will begin in Mexico at about 11:07 a.m. PDT on Monday before crossing into Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. It will end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT. The partial eclipse will last for awhile longer. Even if you're not in the path of totality and won't see the full eclipse, you may still see a percentage of it.

To find out exactly when the eclipse will be happening in your area, you can search by  USA TODAY's database by ZIP code  for a viewing guide.

But how dark will it really get during an eclipse? Here's what to expect.

How dark does it get during a total solar eclipse?

If you're in the path of totality, where the moon completely covers the sun, the sky will become dark as if it were dawn or dusk, according to NASA .

For those who only experience a partial solar eclipse, the sky will appear slightly darker than it was before the eclipse, depending on how much the moon blocks the sun in their location, NASA says.

“When the moon covers 85% of the sun, it’s still no darker than being in the shade on a sunny day and even at 95%, it’s an overcast day-darkness,” said  Dr. Angela Speck in a video . Speck is the chair of the Physics and Astronomy department of the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Speck points out in the video that even at 99.9% partial eclipse, there is still at least 100 times more light coming from the sun than during totality.

And even if you're in the path, don't expect the darkness to last too long. Totality may only last a couple minutes in some areas.

How much of a temperature drop do you get during a total solar eclipse?

NASA says you can expect the temperature to drop about 10 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the humidity and cloud cover at your location.

Total solar eclipse livestream

USA TODAY is providing live coverage of the 2024 solar eclipse beginning at noon E.T. on Monday in a number of areas along the eclipse's path of totality, including Washington, D.C., Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana and New York. You can watch live at the embedded video below or on USA TODAY's  YouTube channel .

According to USA Today , any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears as the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," when observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, confuses animals – nocturnal creatures stir and bird and insects fall silent.

The day before the eclipse, the moon will come closest to Earth this month. On eclipse day, that means the moon is only 223,000 miles away. That proximity will make the moon appear larger in the sky, resulting in an exceptionally extended duration of sun-blocked darkness. The Earth and moon will be 93 million miles from the sun on the day of eclipse.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

Eclipse coverage in Erie, around Pennsylvania: Review Monday's updates, observations

Follow eclipse developments in erie and throughout pennsylvania with live updates, photos and video from events monday.

After more than a year of preparation as a prime viewing location in the path of totality, Erie greeted thousands of visitors for the total solar eclipse Monday. Reporters from GoErie.com and the Pennsylvania's USA TODAY Network were among the sky watchers in crowds at several viewing events in Erie County and beyond.

Reporters provided the following observations from the path of totality in northwestern Pennsylvania and throughout the state Monday, complete with photos and videos:

Post-eclipse traffic

Aside from some predictably slow traffic on Presque Isle State Park, most of the Erie area seemed to dodge the traffic logjam that many had expected.

But it wasn't smooth sailing for everyone. Motorists reported that southbound traffic on Interstate 79 got heavier as they drove further south. One motorist said traffic was moving at about 15 mph at the Cochranton-Geneva exit in southern Crawford County and slowed down even more by the Greenville exist in Mercer County.

People from around the globe visit Erie for eclipse

Rojan Dahal, 24, a graduate computer science student at Gannon and native of Nepal, came to Perry Square to view the eclipse on Monday.

"It is nice to see people from all over the world, really, in Erie," Dahal said. "It is my favorite thing about this."

York Suburban elementary students in awe of solar eclipse

Students at Indian Rock Elementary in the York Suburban School District sat on the macadam outside, wore solar eclipse glasses and stared up at the sun as the light dimmed around them.

"It's amazing," fourth-grader Justice Lanson said. "It's not going to happen for another like 20 years or so, so I feel like it's cool to see."

The district purchased solar eclipse glasses for students to witness the celestial event. Students headed outside at the end of the school day to look up at the sky and watch as the moon nearly covered the sun.

Travelers from far, wide head to North East beach

Terry and Becca Claar "picked the smallest little town and hit the GPS," Terry Claar said.

They ended up in the parking lot of the now shuttered Freeport Restaurant in North East, just down the road from the beach.

Terry Claar, a self-described "space junky" said he didn't want his grandson to miss the event.

"He'll never get to see this in his lifetime unless he travels far," Claar told reporter Matt Rink.

As the sky darkened and the moon blocked the entirety of the sun, one man standing nearby yelled in jubilation, "totally worth it." He had driven from Harrisburg. Fireworks blasted off and spectators from as far away as Texas, Florida, Colorado and Connecticut, who had gathered at Freeport Beach, cheered.

Mike Meyer of Leesburg, Virginia, wasn't about to miss the eclipse, or allow clouds to obstruct his view as they did in 2017 when he trekked to Kansas for the last eclipse.

He left his home at 4 a.m. Saturday and headed to Buffalo, where he grew up, to visit family and watch the eclipse. But then his plans changed.

"At about 12:30 today the weather (in Buffalo) was bad," Meyer said. "I saw on the news that it was going to be clear out over Erie. So I headed west. Grabbed my stuff, said goodbye to the family and took off."

In 2017, it was overly cloudy where he was.

"It was still great, even though it was cloudy, just the overall effect was worth the effort," Meyer said of his voyage to Kansas. "But this? This was perfect."

Eclipse vendor from Philly in Erie

Philadelphia-area resident Eddie Brandt came to Erie to sell eclipse T-shirts he prints himself. Brandt, who was on lower State Street near Dobbins Landing, said he sold about 100 of the 200 shirts he made. "I'll get rid of the rest online," said Brandt.

Groups gather at Conneaut Township Park

A couple from Austintown, Ohio had been to Conneaut Township Park and decided to come up for a visit during the eclipse.

“We’ve been here for the beach before,” said Season Kramer, sitting next to her husband, Christopher Kramer in the back of their pickup truck. They planned the trip a couple of weeks ago.

Views at Presque Isle State Park

Visitors from Washington, D.C., and the Pittsburgh area were among those to make the trek to Presque Isle State Park to view the eclipse.

'Once in a lifetime' event

James Huguley, 47, a social work professor at the University of Pittsburgh, brought his family to Erie for the eclipse and booked a room at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel to experience "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this."

Eclipse darkness near Lake Erie

Philly, bucks county experience eclipse.

Philadelphia and its suburbs got it first glimpse of the partial eclipse right on time shortly after 2:08 p.m., but the clouds quickly moved in after what seemed to be a cloudless and perfectly clear Monday morning. Sky watchers weren't giving up hope though as they gathered at local libraries, the Franklin Institute and other city landmarks to catch a view.

In Bucks County, folks lined up along the Delaware River with their solar eclipse glasses and it parks.

Erie zoo expects predators, prey to experience eclipse differently.

How will animals at Erie Zoo react to the solar eclipse? Behavior of 15-20 species will be recorded by guests and zoo staff, the latter expecting different results between prey species and predators.

“Do they behave differently when the sun goes down at an abnormal time?” zoo curator Jenn Salandra posed to Jeff Uveino. “We know how they normally act at night… Will they start acting that way when this is going on?”

When this project started during 2017’s solar eclipse in the United States, top behaviors observed were nighttime behavior and nervousness or anxiousness. Prey species especially exhibited nervousness. Once data is collected, it will be shared with that from several other zoos participating in this North Carolina State University-based project.

The eclipse also fell on National Zoo Lover’s Day, a welcomed coincidence to the sizable crowd which turned out at Glenwood Park.

'Zooclipse' attendees will aid animal behavioral project

Attendees of Erie Zoo’s “Zooclipse” event were given a 10-page packet with which they can assist a “citizen science project” on animal behavior in relation to the eclipse. Zoo staff recorded behaviors of 15-20 animal species Saturday and Sunday and will compare them to recordings from Monday, when zoo-goers will log data as animals experience the eclipse.

This is the continuation of a project started by Nashville Zoo and Riverside Zoo during a solar eclipse in 2017.

“This is at the core of what we do,” said Erie Zoo chin executive officer Melissa “Roo” Kojancie. “Our mission is to foster appreciation of nature through memorable experiences and meaningful action.”

Wedding and 'Dark Side of the Moon' at Frontier Park

Ed Palattella reports that there is a wedding scheduled during the eclipse at Frontier Park.

Also at Frontier Park, the band Phunkademic just launched into the first song from, what else, Pink Floyd’s classic album “Dark Side of the Moon.”

The plan is for the band to play the whole album, ending at the same time as totality. The final lines to the album’s final song: “And everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.”

Downtown erie traffic and parking.

Times-News photographer Greg Wohlford reports that traffic (at 10:45 a.m.) looks light in downtown Erie, with fewer businesses open. Bayfront traffic is light but roads north of the Bayfront Highway are closed at State, Sassafras and Holland streets with Erie Police Department officers staffed at each. Folks will need to use parking garages or walk at areas near UPMC Park — all normal on-street parking has been posted as tow-away zones.

How is traffic in Erie on Monday morning?

Erie region law enforcement has extra officers on duty to help handle the expected large volume of traffic today. With no schools in session for the region and many businesses closed, traffic was not an issue early Monday, according to Pennsylvania State Police Captain Kirk Reese.

Venango County event draws eclipse enthusiasts

The solar eclipse's powerful draw brought a variety of stargazers Sunday to a narrow mountain road where the Oil Region Astronomical Society’s observatory grounds are located off Route 322 southeast of Oil City. The two-day eclipse event that began Sunday afternoon included opportunities for members of the public to look through telescopes to witness dark sunspots or solar flares that appeared as dancing tendrils erupting from the sun's surface.

Will the weather cooperate?

The  National Weather Service  says the eclipse will start in Texas and make its way across the country, passing over several states before arriving in Pennsylvania. According to USA TODAY , nearly 500 cities in the U.S. are on the path of totality , including Erie.

Forecasts estimated a high temperature of 60 degrees in Erie on Monday. The National Weather Service office in Cleveland called for a 30% chance of showers between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

AccuWeather's total solar eclipse cloud forecast said there was concern that a band of clouds will move across western/central Pennsylvania and New York on Monday.

In south-central Pennsylvania , National Weather Service forecaster David Martin said the area will see clouds some of the time. Overall, it's expected to be a nice day with temperatures in the low- to mid-60s.

Path of totality changed. How's it impact your view?

The path of Monday’s total solar eclipse could be slightly different than expected and leave several parts of the country with a much narrower window of totality, according to new calculations.

If you're in Erie, don't panic.

Since the change in path amounts to only a few hundred yards to about a mile, Erie County ― which continues to sit in the middle of the path of totality ― will remain a prime viewing spot for the event.

Where can you watch it in Erie?
