We handle the full process of pet travel. This includes airline bookings, pet customs clearance (for both import and export), custom made pet travel crates fitted with everything your pet will need for travel and even pet quarantine bookings should same be required. 

State Vet Clearance

None of your furry family members will be allowed to travel unless they are up to date with all vaccines and have been issued with a state vet clearance certificate. All vaccines and health checks are scheduled in a certain way in order to ensure that the correct clearance is acquired.

Pets Wanna Travel is one of the very few establishments in South Africa which has received accreditation from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries, as a veterinary approved facility. This means that our establishment is certified as an animal quarantine facilty.

Being a dog owner, I found it difficult to source IATA compliant plastic pet crates for transporting puppies to their new owners who live in different parts of South Africa. After a lot of thought and research, HPCP came into being.

The aim is to supply IATA compliant pet crates that are of good quality, sturdy, stylish and secure for international and local air transportatio n , or for general crating needs.

New Style of IATA compliant crates in stock.

Easier maneuverability when the wheels are attached, using the double handles. A new injection technology is used for the handles, making them smooth to the touch and stronger.

The side and back punched ventilation vents offer a unique and impressively appealing new look.

Gates all have the four way locking system which is added security and minimizes the accidental opening of the gate. The gate also has the ability to be locked.

Gates are slightly taller allowing easier loading and offloading of animals in and out of the crates. The taller gate also allows for extra ventilation.

The corners of the crates have been reinforced for added strength, security and safety.

There are two bowls that clip onto the inside of the gate, one of which is slightly larger and has been fitted with a rim to prevent spillage.

The large sizes of crates come with wheels ( not to be used on aircrafts) which can be attached or removed as needed.

Live Animal stickers plus the information sticker are included.

Nuts and bolts plus lockable clips provide excellent security.

Assembly of the crates is simple and easy. To assemble:

• Place the top section onto the bottom section
• Fit the gate into the designated slots in the bottom half and the top half
• Insert the bolts in the designated hole from the bottom and connect the nuts on the top of the bolt.
• Lastly fit the clips and lock them – there is a video showing how these are fitted.

Customer Clearance

Animal Travel Services offers a range of pet travel clearance services for the import and export of your puppy, kitten or commercial shipment intended, to ensure that your precious cargo is cleared by South African Customs Authorities.

Customs clearance can be challenging for any importer or exporter, but the strict regulations in place to prevent the illegal trafficking of endangered wildlife, all animals that are brought into the country or taken out of the country are subject to a number of requirements.

PET TRAVEL CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR PET TRAVEL CLEARANCE?

It is best to begin the preparations as early as possible – preferably as soon as you have begun making arrangements to export or import your pet. To help you prepare your pet for animal travel customs clearance, you will need to ensure that the following requirements are in order:

• Permits are not required by every destination in the world, but may still apply to your destination. To be safe, it is best to speak to a pet travel specialist such as Animal Travel Services to find out what permits are required for the country you are importing or exporting to.
• Microchips are almost always required. These should be implanted before the rabies vaccination so make sure that your pet is chipped well in advance.
• Valid rabies vaccination (older than 30 days and younger than 1 year – South African Export requirement) – required for every destination.
• Other vaccinations apart from the rabies vaccination, which is essential, include specific inoculations that apply to cats and dogs respectively. These may vary according to your target destination, so speak to your consultant to find out exactly what your pet will need.
• Rabies antibody blood TITRE tests are becoming a pre-requisite for many countries around the world. These need to be done 90 days before your pet travels – speak to your Animal Travel Services consultant to learn more about this requirement.
• Health certificates from a vet are always required. This certificate shows that your pet is in good health and safe to travel. Whether you are importing or exporting, this document is essential.
• All original documentation has to travel with the pet, and copies will not be accepted. Taking the time to get your pet’s paperwork in order in advance will save you both added stress once the time to travel arrives.

Travel Containers

While your pet is in transit, he or she will need a safe, comfortable temporary home in the form of an animal transit container or carrier. To help keep your cat or dog cosy in their temporary travel home during transit, we offer a specialised service that gives you peace of mind throughout your pet’s travels.

TRAVEL CONTAINER GUIDELINES

Some important guidelines to keep in mind when considering a container for your pet’s travels include the following:

• Animal Travel Services manufactures our own superior IATA approved wooden travel boxes.
• We can supply IATA approved plastic kennels as well.
• Your pets’ travel kennel must always meet the IATA standards.
• It is important to choose the correct size travel kennel for your beloved pet. The box cannot be too small or too large.
• We recommend that you measure your pet so we can select the right size travel container. Please follow the guidelines below in order to provide us with your pets’ correct measurements.
• If you are purchasing your own travel kennel, please remember to allow room for a blanket and a water bowl.

MEASURING YOUR PET TRAVEL KENNEL

Use the following dimensions when determining the ideal size pet carrier or container for transportation of cats and dogs:

• – length from nose to root of tail
• – height from the ground to shoulders
• – height in standing position with head erect
• – width across the shoulder blades
• – weight

Pet and animal transport by air

We are here to help you relocate your pets by airplane.

Pet and animal transport by air is by far the most popular mode of pet travel. Not only is it obviously the fastest option, which means less time spent in a travel kennel and less travel stress for parents and pets alike, but it is also the more affordable option.

PETport has decades of experience shipping animals by air behind us, you can rest assured knowing that you and your pets are in good hands throughout the entire pet relocation process.  We tailor your travel plans based on airline handling, transit point handling and pets welfare which remain paramount to us during your entire relocation.

We offer 3 types of delivery or collection services for your convenience:

1. door to door:.

Our Animal Handlers will collect your pets from the agreed upon residence, transport them via air or road and after arrival at destination, deliver them to their new home address.

2. Door to airport:

Our Animal Handlers will collect the pets from your home or agreed upon address, check them in at the airport to fly to your chosen city, and on arrival at their destination airport you will be able to collect your pets. Next step is for you to finalise customs and airline procedures, and then you and your fur-babies can head off to explore your new home!

3. Airport to airport:

In this instance, you will deliver the pets to the airport, where one of our Animal Handlers will meet you for check in. We arrange to fly your pets to the destination airport and you will collect your pets upon their arrival and finalise customs and airline procedures before taking them to their new home and giving them all the catch up cuddles they deserve.

Information about the aircraft:

Your pets will be booked in as manifest cargo into the cargo hold of the aircraft, which means that they will travel in the livestock hold below the passenger cabin. This area is temperature controlled (18C – 25C dependent on temperature at origin), dimly lit and pressurised. All pet and animal crates are secured to pallets within the aircraft ensuring optimum safety and security for the duration of the trip. No pets are removed from their travel crates during flight for their safety and all water bowls are filled prior to take off.  Your pets do not travel in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.

General tips before your pet’s air travel:

Feeding your pet:.

Because pets will be in their travel kennel for an extended period of time, we ask that parents please do not feed their pets a large meal on the day of departure, but rather give them a small light meal (chicken and rice is a great light option) to avoid in flight discomfort. A large meal often results in constipation which leads to discomfort or a large toilet break when the pets need to relieve themselves and this in turn will lead to a very messy and uncomfortable dog and travel kennel. We strongly suggest that parents please feed their pets well the night before departure along with a long leisurely walk prior to collection of the pets, in which they will have enough time to stretch their legs and relieve themselves before their journey.

A Familiar scent:

As pet owners ourselves, we know the bond shared between pets and pet owners is unbreakable. Our pets find security in our scent and we understand that. For this reason, we often suggest for parents to send an old T-shirt with their pets to put in the travel crate with them, this gives them a sense of being close to their mums and dads while they travel and in turn calms them further.

For further safety, we advise parents to ensure that items of clothing being sent with do not have any buttons, buckles or zips which could be chewed off as this is a chocking hazard for our furry friends. We recommend just a small doggy or kitty blanket or an old T-shirt, no toys, collars or thick blankets will be put into the travel crate as these could also be hazardous to the pets and take up additional space.

Pet travel accessories

As briefly mentioned above, please do not send your pet with their accessories i.e. feeding/water bowls, pet beds and toys. The travel crates are made specifically to your pets dimensions and anything put in with them would become a choking hazard or cause discomfort due to space constraints.

We strongly suggest that all these items rather stay with the parents and taken onboard in your hand luggage as it sometimes happens that one of the airline staff may remove it from the travel kennel for safety or arrival reasons and in turn not reattached, which we definitely don’t want to happen.

Original documentation

Please note that all pets have to travel with their original documentation securely attached to the top their travel kennel. This will be communicated with you by your travel consultant prior to travel and arrangements will be made to ensure we have all that we need long before departure.

Securing your cat:

Cats sense change and we often hear of our feline friends vanishing the night before or morning of collection! To avoid this, we urge all kitty parents to please keep their cats securely closed in a room from the evening before the scheduled collection so there are no last minute surprises.

We believe that it is vital that your pet has the perfect amount of space to move around, but not too much space that he/she would feel unstable. All our crates come with fixed water bowls; and we also place shredded newspaper on the floor. We use absorbent pet liners for your pets comfort. We will design the crate according to your pet’s specific personality and character making sure that they are in the safest and most familiar environment possible.

We have personally been to many of the quarantine kennels all over the world. Our long term relationships with our international counterparts, allows us to assure you, that your pet will be safe and well looked after, as if he/she was still with us.

Our relationships with the best vets is of paramount importance to us. If something should go wrong, we want your pet to have the best medical care possible. We are also able to organise documentation from our Veterinary Services according to your pet’s travel documents, to accompany them on their trip.
