After terrifying audiences for more than a decade as Gus Fring in “ Breaking Bad ” and “ Better Call Saul ”, Giancarlo Esposito is back with another intense crime thriller. "Parish", premieres on Sunday, March 31 – and you can watch it from anywhere with a VPN .

"Parish" premieres at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, March 31 (9 p.m. Sundays thereafter) • U.S. — AMC Plus or AMC via Sling / Fubo • Canada — AMC Plus • Watch anywhere — try NordVPN 100% risk-free

Having carved a niche for himself as an uber-villain, not only for Vince Gilligan but also in the Star Wars show “ The Mandalorian ”, Esposito looks set for a change of pace, taking on the role of apparent family man Gray Parish. But it’s a veneer that slips when his old partner, Colin (Skeet Ulrich, " Riverdale "), arrives on the scene, dragging him back into his former criminal life.

Once back in, Gray looks set to head down a path that will reveal the truth behind his son’s supposed accidental death and ultimately force him to slide back into his role as a wheelman for some of the city's most dangerous and powerful gangsters.

Also in the cast are Arica Himmel as Michael, Paula Malcomson as Ros, Ivan Mbakop as Zenzo, Bonnie Mbuli as Shamiso Tongai, and Zackary Momo as The Horse.

Giancarlo Esposito looks set to bring the same quiet intensity we’ve come to expect from one of TV’s best, so read on to find out how to watch “Parish” from wherever you are.

The parish has gathered in worship on these grounds since 1845. A black walnut church was dedicated in 1849. By 1881, a stone church had replaced it and expansions in 1963 and 2000 brought us to the current church with the attached Parish Center.

On the first floor, the Parish Center contains our Adoration Chapel, St. Mary's Hall, and Family Room.  The parish reception office is located on the first floor off the main hallway. The elevator and stairs to the second-floor offices and classrooms are located right outside of St. Mary's Hall. Upstairs you will find the parish offices, church library, choir room, and several conference rooms and classrooms. Many adult groups such as RCIA, Bible studies, ACTS, etc., and the high school and middle school youth use these facilities as well.

In AMC's 'Parish,' actor Giancarlo Esposito drives the story

parish tour

Giancarlo Esposito as Gracian (Gray) Parish. Eliot Brasseaux/AMC hide caption

Giancarlo Esposito as Gracian (Gray) Parish.

"I'm tired of being the passenger in my own life," narrates Giancarlo Esposito in the first episode of AMC's Parish . It's a sentiment that holds true for the actor as much as it does for Gracian Parish, the title character he plays.

Parish premiers on AMC on Sunday, March 31.

Esposito, the actor best known for playing villainous foils – like drug kingpin Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul – is finally behind the wheel as the hero, or maybe anti-hero, in a series he executive produced.

If you're looking for a show to ease into, Parish probably isn't for you. Within the first three minutes, Gracian "Gray" Parish is already skidding through the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Soon, "You get the sense that maybe he's had a past life, which starts to come to light when he's encountered by an old friend who has spent some time in jail," Esposito explained to NPR. That friend, played by Skeet Ulrich, asks Parish for help – he needs a driver, for a businessman he knows.

Esposito's character quickly finds out that "businessman" is really code for Zimbabwean gangster engaged in human trafficking.

As the story barrels along, you realize Parish needs cash for his black car business – and he needs answers about his son's killing.

So the formerly retired criminal driver gets dragged back into the fold.

It's a familiar premise, sure. But Esposito said what drew him to this American remake of the BBC series The Driver was the character's possibility for nuance.

"One thing I've cultivated in my career is that you can say things without words – and say them with actions or your facial expressions," he said. That career began on the stage before Esposito appeared on screen in Trading Places and Spike Lee films like Do the Right Thing and Mo' Better Blues .

Walter White (Bryan Cranston), Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in Season 4 of Breaking Bad. Ben Leuner/AMC hide caption

Walter White (Bryan Cranston), Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in Season 4 of Breaking Bad.

Esposito's Breaking Bad co-star Bryan Cranston said that decades before the two would get the chance to work opposite each other as dueling drug dealers, he was awestruck by Esposito's menacing stage presence in a 1984 off-Broadway production of Balm in Gilead.

"He played a street drug dealer in this play, but he was so committed and so believable, I thought he was some guy who wandered off the street to start selling drugs to the audience," Cranston said.

Esposito remembers playing the role of Ernesto in Balm in Gilead well. He'd go out into the audience with a Polaroid camera as people were coming into the theater to watch the show.

"As they came in and sat down, I'd hustle them to take a Polaroid. And some people thought it was free and I said, 'No this is like ten dollars a shot.' The people that thought that I was screwing around tried to put it in their pocket...I remember I had a switchblade, and I'd pull the switchblade out and open it, and people would freak out."

A nervous stage manager confiscated his knife after some audience complaints, but Esposito said he just brought a new one the very next night. He also said that he took the proceeds from his Polaroid hustle and used them to fund cast parties.

It's that kind of commitment to the craft that another Breaking Bad co-star, Bob Odenkirk, remembers.

"Giancarlo is there for every aspect of this effort," Odenkirk said. "He's there for analyzing the script, asking what matters [and] prepping."

Esposito later joined Odenkirk again on the prequel series Better Call Saul .

"What you're always looking for in a role is a subtext that is almost contradictory to the text," Odenkirk explained. "I just think Giancarlo just played [Gus Fring] with such texture and subtlety that he had a rich inner life."

That subtle texture has become Esposito's calling card.

But Esposito said his newest character — Parish — is more true to his own life.

"To me, this is the highlight of my career. To be able to be in a position where I can truly be closer to who I am," he said. And yes, Gray Parish is a criminal. But he's also a legitimate business owner and a family man. (Paula Malcomson plays his wife, and Arica Himmel plays their daughter.)

Esposito has said the situation Parish finds himself in on the show — drowning in debt, a marriage on the rocks — is familiar. He's been through it himself.

"Having four daughters has taught me so very much," Esposito said.

They've taught him to be more open, and not just about the parts of his life that he's proud of, but of the stuff in the shadows. It's important, he said, because his children are watching him on screen and off.

"I realize – what I do, they see. How I sound, they hear. How I feel, they feel," Esposito said. "We've all become very close, so I can no longer be an enigma to them, because I'm at a level in my life where I'm just like everybody else. I want to live a good life and make a good transition [or] death. Although, I tell my kids I'm not dying, so you're stuck with me forever."

Esposito is only slightly joking. He says he still feels his own parents, even though they've been gone for a while. His father, Giovanni Esposito, was an Italian carpenter and stagehand. His mother, Elizabeth Foster, was an opera singer from Alabama. They met on one of Foster's tours.

"My parents passed on to me a love of music, a love of the arts, a respect for that which takes place in motion in film and music and dance. They gave me the creative essence that I love and enjoy today," Esposito said. "They also handed me a great deal of their previous trauma, which has taught me that generational trauma exists. They both have been passed away for a while now, but I feel the healing of my own life healing their resting place."

Esposito is grateful for the gifts his parents gave him and he acknowledges their pain.

"Every time I...feel my dad, who was very Italian, very demonstrative, his way or the highway...Every time that comes up for me, I stop myself, take a deep breath and go, 'That's my father. That's Giovanni. That's not me.' I don't have to be him. I can be me. I can heal that space that he wasn't able to heal for himself, and it's the same with my mother," Esposito said.

Esposito recalled that his mother never got quite as far as she wanted to in show business.

"Each time I break through and become more of myself and commit deeper to my craft, and I'm acknowledged because, 'Oh you're so good and wonderful,' I know what's really being said. It's not my ego hearing it. It's my soul. You really are good at what you do. You really have created a craft," Esposito said.

That craft is on display in Parish , as he effortlessly takes the wheel.

With "Parish" Giancarlo Esposito is finally the lead. If only this vehicle were worthy of his talent

Like his fellow "breaking bad" alumni, esposito is the best thing about a wobbly drive of a drama, by melanie mcfarland.

The shadow cast by “ Breaking Bad ” is inky, far-reaching and difficult, but not impossible, to escape. A few of “Parish” lead Giancarlo Esposito ’s co-stars have tried with varying degrees of success. Bryan Cranston ’s movie career avails him of some variety, but on Showtime’s “Your Honor” he plays another version of a good man pushed to commit evil for the sake of protecting his family.

Bob Odenkirk and Aaron Paul steered out of the derivative prestige trap to some degree, with Paul showing entirely different sides on “Westworld” and “ BoJack Horseman ,” and Odenkirk blending his comedy chops with his dramatic range on “ Lucky Hank ,” one of those fine shows we wish we’d kept watching.

Esposito, though, contends with a separate problem from his co-stars in that his singularly brilliant Gus Fring spans two shows, “Breaking Bad” and “ Better Call Saul ,” and created a mold from which he's still freeing himself.

Fring is a dapper, eternally composed villain possessed of a calm that drapes an outer layer of sinister over a performance that screams warnings without saying much at all. Gus speaks with a suave efficiency that lends an elegance to his villainy. That was also true of Moff Gideon in “ The Mandalorian ” as Stanley Johnston – “with a T!” – the wealthy American wolf hunting crooked aristocrats in Guy Ritchie's London, as seen in "The Gentlemen."

All of these are co-starring roles, each further cementing Esposito’s reputation of being the best reason to watch anything he’s in regardless of quality.

“Parish” is no different, and entirely too much like many dramas gunning to earn the “premium TV” label by emulating other critically acclaimed shows.

Like “Your Honor" it is an American adaptation of a foreign format — in this case a British show called "The Driver." The main distinction is that Esposito is the lead as opposed to the sideman, a designation that he should have received much earlier in his career. His command of Gracián Parish’s stony resolve behind the wheel is captivating in the opening episode when he glides through a dangerous chase through New Orleans with ease, improvising at turn after turn to escape the cops, refusing to lose his cool.

Gray, as he’s known, thought he’d left all that behind. (Yep, it’s one of those .) The former wheelman retired 18 years ago to run a luxury car service in New Orleans. But business has dried up, and he’s struggling to pay his mortgage.

Parish

So when his old partner in crime Colin (a very sweaty and bestubbled Skeet Ulrich) resurfaces with a frantic request to help him with a mess he’s slipped into with a Zimbabwean crime family, Gray steps up with the standard “OK, but just this once” agreement, which will surely be true this time!

Colin has run afoul of the Tongais, a family of human traffickers headed in the city by The Horse (Zackary Momoh), whose sister Shamiso (Bonnie Mbuli) counsels him as his capricious brother Zenso (Ivan Mbakop) tries his patience, are establishing themselves in local business and politics as they exploit workers they lure to the states with promises of helping them gain citizenship.

We need your help to stay independent

In Gray, Horse sees an experienced, even-keeled potential ally who’s also exploitable; Shamiso does some digging and finds out he’s mourning the killing of his teenage son on top of the money problems. This leads to the good old "offer Gray can’t refuse" coupled with his confidence in knowing he’s the only man who can do what they require – you know, a specific set of skills, and so on, and so forth.

Competent copycat dramas abound these days, making this show’s place on the lower side of the quality scale’s midrange fairly typical. Esposito puts in maximum effort, muscling out a performance that exhibits his full range of dramatic capability despite prosaic scripts stringing together phrases you’ve heard in other shows and movies, and not necessarily superior ones.

The first two episodes set a speed that the middle hours downshift to the show's detriment.

Still, he warms substantially in scenes where he transitions from all business into a father and husband struggling to anchor his relationships with his daughter Makayla (Arica Himmel), who’s still navigating her grief over losing her brother, and his equally bereft wife Rose (Paula Malcolmson). They’re ready to leave the city for a fresh start, and with the bills piling up, cashing in what chips they still have makes sense.

The writers very quickly bump Gray’s family life from the shotgun seat to the back until we nearly forget they’re around. That’s a shame for a performer of Malcolmson’s caliber.

Like most of the other cast, she makes what we can of her screen time. Mbuli and Momoh similarly make watching worthwhile – Mbuli especially, both for her evil queen regalness and Shamiso’s enviable wardrobe. The Tongais are if nothing else models of aspirational style, which is the least a show like this can contribute to our weekly conversations.

They both draw and seize our attention alongside Esposito. That’s still a poor excuse for failing to develop other characters, including Amanda Brugel’s Sister Anne whose role amounts to little more than an expositional prop, and Bradley Whitford’s businessman, mainly there to add some local color to all the corruption.

For the viewer, though, the real shortcoming is the plot’s inconsistent pacing. Despite the standard body disposal and accompanying sidekick freakout, and a side journey designed to crack the hero’s mask of assuredness, the first two episodes set a speed that the middle hours downshift to the show's detriment.

This is one example of the drama's divided depiction of New Orleans. On the one hand, there's the cosmopolitan view of the Tongais, whose culture is one not often featured on TV. But then you have Gray stumbling through a random carnival parade, as if to play to the tourist stereotype. We should consider ourselves lucky that the appropriated accents aren't dripping with Northern gumbo, i.e. the kind that punishes us instead of lending flavor.

The fifth episode returns to form but if the sagging energy leads you to bow out before then you can’t be blamed for that. I suppose the fault lies instead with series co-creators Sunu Gonera and Danny Brocklehurst, who helmed the first two episodes before Gonera was swiftly excised from the production  related to a sexual assault allegation .

That would cast a cloud over any series, but it’s especially unfortunate that it happened on one announcing Esposito as a worthy lead. Who can say whether that added an unwelcome drag to the season’s narrative cohesion? We can only judge what’s shown onscreen.

The six episodes allotted to “Parish” require a narrative discipline that simply isn’t in play, and Esposito’s talent demands original writing that rarely presents itself here. He’s excellent despite this lack – so much that it makes you want better for him. Maybe “Parish” will lead to more worthy projects, if not a second season that, fate willing, smooths out the rough patches and holes in its opening length of track.

"Parish" premiere at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, March 31. New episodes air at 9 p.m. Sundays starting on April 7.

Giancarlo Esposito knows how to play the villain. In ‘Parish,’ he steps into the antihero role

For years, Giancarlo Esposito’s performance as stoic and ruthless cartel distributor Gustavo Fring was pivotal in helping “Breaking Bad” and its prequel spinoff, “Better Call Saul,” become prime examples of antihero-centered shows. Fring’s illicit power and reign of terror established a spectrum of villainy to measure against Walter White and Saul Goodman’s moral ambiguity.

In AMC’s crime drama “Parish,” Esposito now gets to be the leading man who pushes the fine line between right and wrong. He plays Gracián “Gray” Parish, a man who is coping with the death of a son and struggling to keep his luxury car service in New Orleans afloat, when his criminal past resurfaces, entangling him with a local Zimbabwean mob family. Esposito is also an executive producer on the six-episode drama, which is based on the U.K. series “The Driver.”

“Parish” follows the release of Netflix’s “The Gentlemen, ” Guy Ritchie’s stylish British crime caper, in which Esposito plays Stanley Johnston — with a “T” — an impeccably dressed, wine-loving American drug baron billionaire.

Esposito spoke with The Times about how the themes of “Parish” aligned with his own story, putting his driving skills to the test for the series, and his relationship with ambition. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

A man confronting another man amid foliage

The show captures the pressures that many people feel right now — trying to make ends meet while shouldering whatever problems torment us. While few would rob a bank , start a drug empire or find themselves entangled with a mob family, many are forced into bad life choices to get by. Is there a moment in your life where you felt that kind of desperation, especially as a father?

Oh, absolutely. I had four daughters, I lived in Connecticut beyond my means — put the strike and the pandemic together. No work. This is going back 10 to 15 years. [I was] desperate; the mortgage is due on the house. I just went belly up and couldn’t get it together — beg, borrowed and stole from everyone I could. I relate to this story deeply.

When I first saw the original [series], I recognized there’s a man who’s about to collapse and cave in and be conquered. It’s reflective of some elements of my life that were real. I not only lost my house, I lost my family. I got a divorce and they went one way and I went another way. But I was so committed that, with every last penny I had, I had to take care of them; I wanted to take care of them. That was my desire, so that my kids wouldn’t have to suffer what I suffered when I was young. That was my impetus to pull out. I sacrificed everything I have to be able to get back on an even keel for them. But I carried shame for many years. I’ve been through it and came out the other end and I have a great relationship with my children and my former wife, amazingly so, but I look at myself differently. I feel differently. Because the shame that was choking me, the shame and trauma that Gray is going through, the depression that he’s in is heavy duty. This show appealed to me on all these levels because there was a relationship that I had to the element of what the character was going through. Because if you still feel that pain, it means you still have work to do. If you still have that work to do, this might help you be a little bit more honest with yourself about that part of your life that you don’t want to talk about.

How did you pull through? I’m sure the wild thoughts creep in: ” Can I rob a bank ” ? What do you remember about that time of your life?

You’re so astute. My former wife, the mother of our beautiful children, her family was in insurance. I found myself asking these pointed questions in a roundabout way: “How does that insurance policy work? How much am I insured for? Oh, and what are the premiums?” Just trying to be laissez faire about it because in my mind, I thought, “OK, is suicide covered?” It’s not covered. But I thought maybe I could find someone to knock me off so that my family can really make it. That’s where my mind was. The other part of it is I’m an actor, a master of disguise, a voice of physicality. So you brought it before right to the forefront: I could rob a bank. I’ve done it before on TV. I can do it in real life. You think of horrible ways and things to do that would be the least harmful for you to 1) not get caught and 2) be able to continue to live with yourself after doing something reprehensible. But then, if something goes wrong, then what are you going to do?

In our story [of “Parish”], things go wrong, they don’t go according to plan. Then you often think about, “What would I do? And where does that put my children and my family then?” So I just started to dig deeper and deeper, to figure out how to re-create myself and eventually, I started to work again and find spaces where I could find my niche. Thank goodness my family was really strong. It was really the impetus for me to start the journey of this show [years ago]. Of course, “Breaking Bad” pulled me out, and “Better Call Saul” continued it. A few years ago, I was doing five different shows as a guest artist at one time. I became very in demand and still am, juggling a lot of different balls. But what it taught me was tell your passionate story.

A man in a suit and hat poses with sunglasses

We were talking earlier about the points of connection to Gray. Does a performance feel truer to you when you feel like you can relate to the character?

Well, it does, but it doesn’t have to. It’s the elements of the character that I like to be able to relate to. In “The Gentlemen,” I’m playing the richest man in the world. Oh, my gosh, that’s a dream. I’d love to be the richest man in the world. I kind of know how to do that. I’m a prince. I’m a king. Most certainly, the imagination soars that you can walk through that door and be that. To me, it’s always important to have one thing, even if it’s just one little thing, that you can connect to that will open the door to 10 things.

But this project, [“Parish,”] has been different. This really reflected my heart and soul because it’s personal. It’s become so personal to me to be able to just be proud of myself for not having succeeded in my own self-annihilation. Because I’m a guy who loves life. I love my children. But I also relate to being the martyr; I relate to saving people; I relate to being a hero. But I want to live. So my gratitude runs deep because not everyone gets a shot to be who they really are on the level that I have.

Do you consider Gray an antihero?

Yes, partly I do, because he’s resorted to going back to an old life that’s slightly underhanded to save the above-board life he really wants. He’s equal parts of both because his intentions are good; he’s struggling against the dark intention he’s held in his life for a long time. And as we progress, knock on wood, we’ll learn about his life before his family — his wife and child. And that would be a great clue as to what he’s carrying and why.

When you’re watching someone else play the “true villain,” is it hard not to wonder how you would play a line if you were in that role?

It is sometimes because I think our true villains, many of them are stereotypical. We don’t take the time to draw them as complete human beings. I think that’s part of my success when I’m presented with playing the possibility of a villainous character; I want to make him a complete human being, not a stereotype. But we want the shorthand or we’ve resorted to the shorthand for a long time in our business, I believe. That’s what makes the difference in good film and good television that allows you to see what made that person who that person is.

We obviously need to talk about the driving in “Parish.” I long to get on a highway and just go pedal to the metal even though it would terrify me. I know you’re a car person. How much of it were you able to do and how was it to lean into that?

It was really wonderful. I think as a driver who has taken a couple of driving courses — not as much as the stuntmen take — when they asked me to come down and show them (it’s happened on [a few] movies: “Maze Runner,” I did a moment driving in that movie; “Harley Davidson,” “The Marlboro Man”), I can spin this pickup truck around or come and show us how you could stop on a dime if that rock is the camera and it’s right in front of you. I have to prove it. And when they asked me to do the same for “Parish,” take the driving course with them and learn a reverse 360 and practice spinning the car around and weaving, I thought, “Oh, I know how to do that.” But it takes practice. Even if you know how to do it, you need a refresher course. I drove my butt off on “Parish.” I don’t want to say too much because there were a few moments where I’ll just say I was chided. I did what you wanted to do on the very narrow streets of New Orleans. I learned a lot about my own self-control. I learned a lot about my reflexes and being safe. Andy [Dylan], our stuntman, was amazing. We had amazing car people, we had amazing first ADs [assistant directors] who were able to guide me, and I was able to push it to a limit, but not over that limit, and feel as if I still had control.

I do want to ask you about “The Gentlemen . ” You play Stanley Johnston, who occupies the opposite end of the economic spectrum to Gray in “Parish.” How was it navigating that elite and perilous world?

Oh, so much fun for me. I wanted to be very specific about who Stanley was. I really wanted to research and work with Loulou Bontemps, who had such great clothing design [on the show]. It put me in a space where I felt like I was the king. The king doesn’t worry about anything. The king worries about his presentation and takes care of his business. It allowed me, through my conversations with Guy Ritchie, who was familiar with a person — African American, as well — who had that kind of stature in our world, [to] realize that that was always a dream of mine; and I could make it possible in this reality, in this show “The Gentlemen.” What I loved about it, is it’s a way of carrying yourself. My character, Stanley Johnston — with a “T” — knows all about British history, he knows about their culture and their rulers, he knows about their politics. He’s educated himself because he’s fascinated with that culture. It allows him to have an upper hand on being ahead of what he’s about to offer you. He’s also persistent. And he also has all the means in the world. There’s a lightness about Stanley that I really enjoyed incorporating into the wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Giancarlo Esposito on how Baby Yoda smells and why fashion is important

Jan. 22, 2024

Let’s take a step back. Your mother was an opera singer and your father a stagehand. You’ve been acting since you were very young, making your Broadway debut when you were 10. Did you feel ambitious as a kid?

I felt ambitious to get out of the situation I was in. I didn’t like my home life. My mother and father — leading up to their divorce — weren’t nice to each other. I had a brother who dominated my personality, in that he was the stronger one. I was always reluctant to show who I was. I chose that path. I felt like I had a vision for my life but didn’t know quite what it was. I think the ambition was to be the best I could be. I love the story of [explorer Ernest] Shackleton. I loved adventurers. And I think that’s what led me to be an actor. Because in my acting life, I feel like somewhat of an adventurer. I’m in this world where I’m navigating something I don’t know — and it’s unsure and unsafe and edgy, and I’ve got to find a way to survive in it and to move forward. I have these Giancarlo-isms, one of them is: If you don’t know where you’re going, you’re never gonna get there. So it’s like, choose something, otherwise, the choice gets made for you.

So the stories I want to tell, and I continue to tell, there’s something about me sharing them on a personal level that allows someone sitting at home, eating Cheerios or pork and beans — like I was at 29th and 8th Street, my mother, brother and I were sleeping in one bed that rolled into the middle, we had plastic on the windows in the middle of the winter because it had no glass, [it] was a flat pass — and sees this interview or reads me in the L.A. Times and one thing, who knows what it’ll be, in this conversation it will allow them to go: “Oh, wait a minute. I’m not going to stop, I’m going to keep trying.”

Parish is set to premiere on Sunday, March 31, at 10:00 pm ET on AMC and will be also available to stream on AMC+ on the same day. The all-new thriller series premiere airs right after the finale of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Lived .

Parish tells the story of Gray Parish, a family man and a proud business owner of a luxury car service who gave up his life of crime to live an honest life. After his son is brutally murdered and his business falls apart, he encounters an old friend who pushes him to return to his old associations. Desperate and hopeless, Parish plunges back to the dark path he left long ago and ends up working for the ruthless gangster, The Horse, sending him on a relentless quest with moral intentions and dangerous consequences. And with his family caught in the crosshairs, the criminal-turned-family fan finds himself in an endless pursuit of protecting everything and everyone he loves. Talking about his character and the plot of Parish , Esposito explains how the show’s setting of The Big Easy befits the story,

It’s a city that has a majority of churches, more than any other city in America. It’s a city with bars on every corner, where you can party until 4 in the morning. It seems like a place where you have to make a choice, and our show’s a lot about the choices that Gracian Parish makes, whether they be good choices or bad choices and how they affect his family. It was so much about the family and community, not only the city, but also of two different men and their families and how they tend to deal with the circumstances surrounding them. This was a city that was the right one.

In development for several years, AMC’s Parish has been a much-awaited series since its announcement and promises an exciting crime thriller show fueled by a stellar ensemble and high-octane storytelling.

The all-new crime thriller series is original on the network, so you can watch Parish on the AMC network exclusively. The series will simultaneously air on AMC and stream on AMC+. So, even if you want to watch the series cordless, you can sign up for AMC+ and watch it with a subscription starting at $8.99 per month. Besides being home to Giancarlo Esposito’s breakthrough show Breaking Bad and its spin-off, Better Call Saul , the streamer also hosts several popular titles in the crime thriller space, so you can make the most of your subscription. While you wait for Parish to land this March, you can also check out other genre titles like Dark Winds , Gangs of London , and Happy Valley .

AMC released a sneak peek and a teaser for Parish back in late 2023, followed by a full-length, official trailer in February 2024. Among the three promo clips, the series promises a high-stakes, high-speed action-thriller that is reminiscent of the 90s and 2000s genre classics. Given that the story’s protagonist is a wheelman in a dangerous gang, expect a lot of car chases and firepower on the go. Shot on location in New Orleans, the trailer opens with Parish being recruited as “a driver with particular skills” for a gang, and from thereon, his life becomes a rollercoaster ride of fear and risks. But when his family gets caught in the middle of all this, Parish determines to find a way, even if “the wrong way is the only way out.” As the trailer reaches its climax, we see him punching hard on the gas and speeding through the streets of New Orleans, as he tells himself, "I'm tired of being a passenger in my own life." It’s also interesting to see Esposito don into his action suit again after 2023’s Kaleidoscope , though his Gracian Parish displays more gravitas as a grieving father and a man desperate to save his family.

Billed as a limited series, Parish is set for six episodes of 60 minutes each. Following the series pilot on March 31, 2024, each new episode will air weekly, on Sundays at 9 PM ET/PT, and stream on AMC+.

Check out the episode schedule and other details of Parish below.

Soon after the show’s announcement in March 2022, the cast for Parish was disclosed, with Emmy-nominated Giancarlo Esposito leading the series as the titular protagonist, Gracian “Gray” Parish. A grieving father, Parish sets out to seek justice for his son’s brutal murder and returns to a life of crime after staying away for years. Esposito shot to fame as drug lord Gustavo/Gus Fring in AMC’s legacy show, Breaking Bad , for which he earned a Critics’ Choice Award and a Primetime Emmy nomination. The character’s success led to his popularity as an antagonist on other television shows like The Mandalorian and Revolution before he reprised the role for Better Call Saul . Esposito also has notable roles in The Boys , Godfather of Harlem , Okja , and Coda , and will be next seen in Netflix’s The Residence , Francis Ford Coppola ’s sci-fi epic, Megalopolis , and Ti West ’s MaXXine .

Paula Malcomson stars as Rose Parish, Gray’s wife and mother to his two children, who finds herself and her family in danger after Gray starts working for a dangerous gang. Malcomson is best known for her roles as Maureen Ashby in Sons of Anarchy , Abby Donovan in Ray Donovan , and Mrs. Everdeen in The Hunger Games films from 2012 through 2015.

Playing the story’s main antagonist , Zackary Momoh of Harriet and Doctor Sleep fame stars as The Horse. The New Orleans-based Zimbabwean gangster hires Parish to work as the gang’s wheelman. Momoh also had main roles in Netflix’s Seven Seconds and HBO’s The Nevers .

Riverdale alum Skeet Ulrich stars as Colin, an old acquaintance of Gray. Ulrich earned recognition as Billy Loomis in 1996’s Scream , (which he reprised in 2022’s Scream and Scream VI ), Det. Rex Winters in the Law & Order franchise, as well as Jake Green in Jericho .

Three-time Emmy-winning actor-producer Bradley Whitford of The West Wing and The Handmaid’s Tale fame stars as Anton. He is “the charming and intelligent face of industrial business in Louisiana who covertly heads a criminal organization. His dispute with The Horse’s human-trafficking ring puts him at direct odds with Parish.”

The Handmaid’s Tale , Kim's Convenience , and Snowpiercer alum Amanda Brugel guest-stars as Sister Anne, who shares a mysterious past with Gray.

In various other supporting roles, Bonnie Mbuli of BBC’s Noughts + Crosses plays Shamiso Tongai, The Horse’s smart and protective older sister; Hawkeye and Lawmen: Bass Reeves alum Ivan Mbakop as The Horse’s brother, Zenzo; Mixed-ish alum Arica Himmel as Gray and Rose’s daughter Makayla; Chicago Fire ’s Dax Rey as The Horse’s son Luke, and Doom Patrol ’ s Caleb Baumann as Maddox Parish.

Danny Brocklehurst , who originally created BBC’s The Driver with Jim Poyser, co-creates and executive produces AMC’s Parish. The BAFTA-winning English screenwriter, playwright, and former journalist is best known for co-creating (with Joe Gilgun ) the Sky comedy series Brassic , which earned him a BAFTA. The series became the most successful comedy series since 2012. Brocklehurst has also adapted some of Harlan Coben ’s novels for Netflix, including Safe and The Stranger . His latest adaptation of Coben’s Fool Me Once became “the eighth most viewed English language Netflix series of all time” as of 2024. He has also previously created the series Ordinary Lies , In the Dark , and Come Home , and written for Shameless (UK original) and Clocking Off .

Giancarlo Esposito also serves as an executive producer. The Walking Dead alum David Morrissey , who played the lead in The Driver , serves as one of the executive producers for Parish , along with Poyser, Theo Travers , Jolyon Symonds for Scribbler Films; Josh Kesselman , Danny Sherman , Barry Jossen , and Tana Jamieson for A+E Studios, and Red Production’s Nicola Shindler .

Giancarlo Esposito Is Spellbinding in New Crime Drama ‘Parish’

BETTER CALL GIAN

The “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” alum drives away with the new series, which is too routine to live up to his crackling performance.

A still from the series Parish on AMC

Alyssa Moran / AMC

There are countless upsides to never seeing a single episode of Breaking Bad .

For one, I get to tune out of those “best television shows of all time” conversations that people have at parties whenever they get to the Walter White of it all, and instead, ponder whether I’m responsible enough to invest in a large plant. Other times, I have the privilege of never having to care about what’s going on with Aaron Paul’s career. But the best part of not giving a single hoot about the meth show—or its spinoff, Better Call Saul —is that I have been able to avoid unconsciously pigeonholing Giancarlo Esposito. If I wasn’t able to see one of America’s finest character actors as anyone but Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul ’s Gus Fring, I simply don’t know what I’d do.

That reality would be a frustrating one, given that Esposito has been popping up everywhere lately. After a stint on The Mandalorian , major parts in two recent Netflix series (of varying quality ), and some excellent voice work on Max’s animated Harley Quinn , Esposito is returning to the network that made him a notable face. His latest drama, Parish —which begins airing Mar. 31 on AMC—is a moderately gripping thriller that works best when it keeps the focus on its star. Esposito’s charm and verve help the six-episode season move at a crackling pace, which comes to a noticeable halt whenever he’s not on-screen. While those looking for Breaking Bad -level excitement from Esposito won’t be disappointed, anyone seeking a wholly impressive crime story will be let down by Parish ’s imbalanced action.

In the series, Esposito plays Gracian ‘Gray’ Parish, a former getaway driver who cleaned up his act and established an above-board car company in New Orleans. Gray lives for his family, but remains haunted by his son Maddox’s recent death, which has impeded the success of his business, and in turn, the security of his family’s life. When Colin (a comically twang-heavy Skeet Ulrich), a friend from Gray’s checkered past, shows up looking for a favor, Gray is in no position to turn Colin down. But, no surprise here, the job is far more complicated than Colin initially lets on.

A still from the series Parish on AMC

Those familiar with 2023’s excellent series Kaleidoscope will immediately note the narrative similarities between Gray and Esposito’s leading role as Leo Pap in the Netflix heist caper. Esposito is back playing another ex-con, strapped for cash, ready to take one last job and get out for good. The parallels between these characters are unfortunate, given that Kaleidoscope did a far better job at fleshing out this archetype than Parish does. Gray’s judgment is clouded by Maddox’s passing, but his son’s death becomes an afterthought in the series, until it’s needed to tie stray plot points together toward its conclusion. This decision slices the ultimate emotional impact of Gray’s efforts in half, even if it does make for a more conventionally gripping motive for our hero.

Although it’s not handled as intelligently as it could be, keeping Maddox’s storyline in the mix is a smart move. The safety of teenagers and young adults remains at the forefront of the Parish ’s thematic framework. Colin’s offer to Gray gets the two of them involved with the Tongais family, a band of trigger-happy human traffickers working out of New Orleans. The group, led by soft-spoken leader The Horse (Zackary Momoh) and his older brother Zenzo (Ivan Mbakop) and sister Shamiso (Bonnie Mbuli), are a frightening bunch, largely because of how cavalierly they speak about the buying, selling, and shipment of humans for dodgy businesses and perverse special interests. This is the kind of dark underbelly that some crime shows won’t wade into, or will simply suggest with a bit more ambiguity, and Parish ’s reluctance to dance around the wickedness of the Tongais’ crimes gives the show a decent set of dramatic stakes.

But even at six episodes that each fall under an hour, Parish can’t get out without making a mess of itself—something the show and its main character have in common. After the initial transport that Gray is hired for goes awry, he’s got to think on his feet and adapt to the situation. Malleability is one of Gray’s special skills, and his performance in the heat of chaos makes the Tongais keen to retain their new driver. It’s less of an offer than a demand, and the Tongais’ reluctance to lose Gray complicates things further when Gray learns of the family’s prickly connection to his old boss, Anton (Bradley Whitford).

From here, storylines start spilling loose, and the writers are unable to take the reins back as they try to sprinkle in more side plots about Colin’s divorce and the well-being of Gray’s wife and daughter. It’s not that Parish isn’t easy to follow; it’s more that the series overcomplicates itself. Not every show requires an all-encompassing arc that closes each character’s narrative loop; concentrating on Gray and Gray alone would have elevated Parish beyond its familiar crime drama structure.

A still from the series Parish on AMC

Each time the show falls into disarray, Esposito is there to set things back on track—even if it’s only a matter of time before Parish starts to swerve again. At 65, Esposito remains a slick and riveting presence, making Gray quick on his feet and stalwart behind the wheel when he needs to make a quick getaway. Esposito balances the fearlessness that his character demands with the sentimental connection that Gray needs to connect to the viewer. It’s no shock that Esposito is fantastic in his role, but it’s entertaining to watch the ways that he fleshes out the nuances of Gray’s personality. When the show’s writers are working with a heavy hand, Esposito complements them with a subtle touch, crafting a role that is far more memorable than the series itself.

Sometimes, that’s the price of bringing a formidable actor into a middling show: They’ll be so great that they outshine the entire production. That is, however, a fair cost. Without Esposito, Parish would be a far less intriguing affair. He keeps the series afloat when it struggles to live up to its potential after the halfway point, and even when it’s running on fumes, it crosses the finish line without completely squandering the goodwill it crafted at its start. Forget about Saul, keep Esposito on speed dial.

Giancarlo Esposito as Gray Bourgeois and Skeet Ulrich as Colin Broussard in Parish

Peak TV may have peaked, but there’s still enough overwhelming volume on the small screen that I was able to watch AMC ‘s Parish while pondering a very niche-y question: Was this the best American cable adaptation of a far more efficient British drama about a guilt-stricken father, played by a star of Breaking Bad , leaving a life of comfortable legitimacy to wallow in a New Orleans criminal underbelly overseen by a member of the cast of Steven Spielberg’s The Post ?

Amc releases 'interview with the vampire' season 2 trailer, 'snowpiercer' lands at amc for fourth and final season.

While it’s possible to acknowledge small attempts from the Parish creative team to give their series the occasional distinctive element, there’s finally only one reason to sit through this choppy, excessively familiar six-parter: After building a deservedly successful brand of smooth and simmering intensity, Giancarlo Esposito gets to, at age 65, become an emotionally volcanic leading man.

There is some awesomeness in watching Esposito tear into this opportunity — he bellows, he bawls, he kicks butt — but the rest of the show offers less awe and more yawn.

Esposito plays Gracián Parish, whom nearly everybody calls “Gray,” even though if I knew anybody named “Gracián,” that’s all I’d call them. (That nobody within the show acknowledges that Gray’s last name is a regional districting pun that opens the door for my Paris-set drama focused on private investigator Jacques Arrondissement, who puts the pain in pain au chocolat .)

Gray runs a luxury car service out of New Orleans, but business is bad, what with rideshare companies, New Orleans’ economy and the fact that Gray is still deeply grieving his son (Caleb Baumann’s Maddox), who was shot and killed under mysterious circumstances eight months earlier. Gray is too preoccupied to notice that his wife, Rose (Paula Malcomson), and daughter, Mac (Arica Himmel), are still hurting as well and might be hankering to leave the city behind.

Colin needs Gray’s particular set of skills to get him out of a scrape, but once Gray proves his usefulness, remaining on the straight-and-narrow becomes impossible — especially when local kingmaker Anton (Bradley Whitford), another human trafficker and another former Gray cohort, steps back into the picture.

Parish begins, as such shows usually do, in medias res, with a truly great car chase through the tight streets of New Orleans, where you never know when a wrong turn might lead you into a jazz parade. (You know eventually it will happen, just as surely as you know that a different pursuit will eventually take place in an above-ground cemetery, because this is N’awlins, baby!)

It’s the best action scene in the show. It’s maybe the only memorable action scene in the show. Credit, I guess, to Sunu Gonera, who co-created the show (with Danny Brocklehurst) and directed the first two episodes, for the bait-and-switch. But not too much credit, since Gonera was removed from the show under unpleasant circumstances and is being heavily underplayed in AMC promotion for … wholly logical reasons.

Was Parish written by people with only a casual tourist’s understanding of New Orleans, or was it written for audiences with only a casual tourist’s interest in New Orleans? And does the distinction matter? The series is packed with the most basic and overplayed of New Orleans references — I’m 90 percent sure a nod to AA meetings serving day-old beignets was a joke, but who could tell? — with troweled-on accents to match.

The use of the Tongais as adversaries is a rare point of specificity, offering a backstory that includes snippets of native language and ties to uprisings against Mugabe and some points of immigration-based depth. It helps that the effectively conflicted Momoh, the sternly calculating Mbuli and the properly unhinged Mbakop are all very good.

It doesn’t help that most of their dialogue is from a crime drama cliché handbook, or that the series lets plot mechanics supersede nuance at every turn. I’d run out of interest in Parish by the fourth episode, but then the fifth episode — directed by Ernest Dickerson — piqued some curiosity by introducing a lot of new elements in a hurry. Then the sixth episode fell completely flat, relying on one ridiculously laughable coincidence and a lot of heavy-handed seeding for a wishful second season.

I’d say maybe you could wait and see if Parish finds a different gear and a more refined voice in its second season, especially given the creative upheaval that took place in the first. But what’s the urgency? This is Esposito’s second heavily accented, stylish crime show in the past month. There just isn’t enough else to set Parish apart.

With ‘Parish,’ Giancarlo Esposito Is Both the Top of the Call Sheet and an ‘Everyman’

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

From “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” to “The Usual Suspects” and “Do the Right Thing,” Giancarlo Esposito has long been involved in some of the biggest, buzziest projects across TV, film and even video games. That’s why it’s surprising to see him finally lead his own prestige TV project now with “Parish.” Not only does Esposito star as the titular character of the AMC crime thriller, but the series also marks the actor’s first time as an executive producer.

“It’s an honor to be a No. 1. It really is,” Esposito told TheWrap of his leading role. “People have put their faith in you, and they’ve trusted you. It becomes less about trying to do something but trying to really live and be as you are … This is what I’ve been wanting for many, many years is just to do great work. I have that attitude every time, out of the box. But with this, it becomes more special.”

After working with Esposito on “Parish,” executive producer Eduardo Javier Canto “totally” understands why the actor is so revered in the entertainment industry.

“He really is the kind of guy who can pick you up on a slow day or on a bad day. He can really elevate a company just by showing up on set, and that’s not just on his days where he’s acting,” Canto told TheWrap. “He was on set even when he wasn’t performing that day to make sure that everyone was up to snuff and to be able to talk to younger actors if they needed guidance.”

“For me, there’s a responsibility that comes with being lead of a show. You wind up caring about every line, every episode, every story. You want to make it the best it can be,” Esposito said. “As an actor per hire, you want the same, but sometimes those things are out of your control. So when you’re able to contribute as much as I have to this show, you have a certain pride you carry with you.”

The object of Esposito’s pride is “Parish.” Based on the BBC One series “The Driver,” the crime drama tells the story of Gray Parish (Esposito), a driver for hire living in New Orleans. Following the death of his son, Parish’s life is torn apart, leaving him in desperate need of money. That’s when his old habits rear their ugly head and this family man returns to his life of crime as a getaway driver.

“This is the story is about an everyman who has to become an extraordinary man under pressure,” Esposito said. “I really wanted all of these things that I’ve felt in my life to flourish in ‘Parish’ and to see this man go through this journey and come out — somewhere in the fourth, fifth, sixth season — whole for it. But he’s got to go through a hell of a ride on his way there because, after all, this is a crime drama.”

Esposito noted that he was “moved” by the original BBC One series, which is what originally led him to this project. As the team worked more and more on this series, it became clear that New Orleans was the perfect setting for this project.

“I can’t think of a better place to set this season of television,” Canto said, emphasizing the “duality” of the city. New Orleans during the day is a very different place than the hard-partying Bourbon Street you may see at night.

“It just fit the situation that we were in with Gray: the duality of Gray’s character, what he’s bringing from his past into the present, who he is, who he wants to be,” Canto said. “These are all questions that we wanted to bring up.”

New Orleans also provided a refreshing filming experience. The crew filmed from May to September of 2023, “the hottest time of year,” Esposito said. Filming on location allowed the crew to really capture this “vibrant” city.

“There’s a tremendous film community, and everyone involved in local government is really helpful,” Canto said. “When you’re outside of LA, when you’re outside of Atlanta, when you’re outside of New York, it’s just a different vibe. People like that you’re there.”

Setting “Parish” in New Orleans also allowed the production to better highlight another major theme of this series: income inequality. In a TV climate awash in wealthy antiheroes, “Parish” stands out as a series that takes an unflinching look at modern day economic disparity and the desperate choices people have to make in order to survive.

“[Gray Parish] is middle class. He’s not the poorest of the poor. And in New Orleans, you see poor people, you see people living on the street because the weather’s good, you can survive. You see people who have succumbed and have been conquered by substance. There’s a high rate of drinking and a high rate of drugs there,” Esposito said. “All those themes play heavily on our show. When you have a choice, what choice do you take? Do you take a choice to try to bail your family out by doing something that’s not very good?”

Canto paints Gray Parish as a man who used to believe in the American dream but whose life is now in chaos because of the death of his son and “because the economy went in a certain way” and “things didn’t work out the way he hoped.”

“Being in a situation right now where people struggle to make ends meet, it’s something that a lot of people can relate to and that we could relate to,” Canto said. “[Executive producer Ryan Maldonado and I] felt it would be nice to be able to present or engage in a conversation about where we’re at right now as a country.”

“Our North Star was always was always to make it feel real. We wanted to make it feel like you’re watching almost a documentary of a person’s descent,” Maldonado told TheWrap.

Giancarlo Esposito Can’t Save AMC’s Haphazard and Predictable ‘Parish’: TV Review

Giancarlo Esposito as Gray Bourgeois and Skeet Ulrich as Colin Broussard - Parish _ Season 1, Episode 2 - Photo Credit: Alyssa Moran/AMC

The series opens in New Orleans amid a chaotic chase involving several police cars. Sliding back in time to a week prior, the audience learns how Gray, a middle-aged car service owner, became entangled in such a harrowing escape. Consumed by grief, despondent and prideful, the driver is easy prey for Tongai leader, The Horse (Zackary Momo) and his siblings, Zenzo (Ivan Mbakop) and Shamiso (Bonnie Mbuli). Impressed with his discretion and particular skill set, the trio isn’t so keen on turning Gray loose after just one successful job. As a result, Gray finds himself in the middle of the Tongais brewing war with another crime organization, which puts his livelihood, his wife, Ros (Paula Malcomson) and his daughter Makayla (Arica Himmel) in peril.

Despite the actors’ competency, plot holes and choppy dialogue bury the real meat of the episodes. Though plenty of violent and action-packed sequences are sprinkled throughout the series, the musical selections and montages used to portray Gray’s memories and inner psyche strip these scenes of intensity. In fact, the narrative doesn’t begin taking shape until the end of Episode 3, “Sanctuary,” when a plea from The Horse’s young son, Luke (Dax Rey), leaves Gray toggling between the boy’s anguish and his own family’s safety.

The show has some intriguing elements. Sister Anne (Amanda Brugel), an old acquaintance of Gray’s who has found solace in the church, isn’t given nearly enough screen time. Unpacking her background might have given viewers a more well-rounded view of Gray’s past. Also, the series follows new African immigrants coming into New Orleans who find safe harbor at the Tongais’ restaurant, Kemba. However, honest conversations regarding visas, work and the trafficking of Black bodies in the 21st century aren’t explored as thoroughly as they should be.

Throughout its six-episode run, “Parish” feels like being relegated to the passenger’s seat. As the show presses on, more is revealed about the life Gray once led, the true nature of the Tongais business and its connection to New Orleans’ political scene. However, obvious clues and disjointed dialogue give the series a haphazard flow that will make it challenging for viewers to see it through the end. With so many storylines, characters and revelations, “Parish” loses its plot, and even the prowess of Esposito can’t save it from feeling like a cobbled-together journey with no distinct destination.

“Parish” premieres March 31 on AMC and AMC +.
