Pakistani PM Sharif due in Turkey on 3-day official visit
By daily sabah.
Pakistan’s prime minister is set to arrive in Turkey on Tuesday on a three-day official visit to address bilateral relations and regional developments with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The trip will mark Shahbaz Sharif’s first visit to Turkey since he assumed office in mid-April after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote following political turmoil.
Sharif’s meeting with Erdoğan will cover the “entire gamut” of Pakistan-Turkey bilateral relations and address regional and international issues, a statement by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said Monday.
Accompanied by a high-level delegation, the prime minister will also have “extensive interaction” with leading Turkish businesspeople and potential investors from a range of industries, the statement noted.
A business delegation from Pakistan comprising representatives of leading companies across various sectors will travel separately to Turkey to participate in the business engagements, it added.
Sharif will also attend a Pakistan-Turkey Business Council Forum, hosted in collaboration with the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK).
“During these events, the prime minister will highlight Pakistan’s vast investment potential and encourage Turkish companies to invest in Pakistan and work to strengthen Pakistan-Turkey trade and economic ties,” the statement said.
“Prominent businesspeople from Pakistan will participate in these events and will also hold B2B meetings on the sidelines,” it added.
Turkish companies have invested more than $1 billion in Pakistan in different sectors, including construction, power, solid waste management, hygiene products, electronics and dairy.
This year, Pakistan and Turkey are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, underpinned by structured institutional mechanisms.
The High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council is the primary platform at the leadership level, which has been instrumental in further cementing bilateral relations.
Six sessions of the HLSCC have taken place so far, with the 7th slated to take place this year.
“The historic and long-standing relations between Pakistan and Turkey are firmly anchored in common faith, shared history, and a glorious tradition of mutual support to each other on issues of core interest,” the Foreign Ministry said.
“The Turkish leadership and government have steadfastly supported the just cause of Kashmir. Turkey is an important and active member of the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir,” it noted.
“The two countries have convergent views on a range of issues including peaceful and stable Afghanistan, Palestine and countering Islamophobia,” it added.
The statement said Sharif’s visit to Turkey “is important in the context of deepening and broadening bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, regional connectivity, health, education, culture and people-to-people relations.”
“It will help in further strengthening the leadership dialogue and existing multidimensional strategic relationship between the two countries and will impart fresh impetus to the efforts to take this unique partnership to new heights,” it added.

PM Shehbaz Sharif, foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto and other officials were supposed to visit Turkey for solidarity on February 8
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Turkey on Thursday, a week after Ankara cancelled Sharif’s visit amid relief and rescue operations after the powerful earthquake that killed over 38,044 people in the country.
Shehbaz Sharif met Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and conveyed the Pakistani nation’s “heartfelt condolences” over the damage and loss of precious lives caused by the tremors.
“I assured him of our steadfast support to Turkey. I am confident that under [the] president’s leadership, Turkiye will emerge from this catastrophe stronger,” he said.
In a meeting with my brother H.E. President @RTErdogan , I expressed profound condolences to him on behalf of people & govt of 🇵🇰. I assured him of our steadfast support to 🇹🇷. The Pakistani PM, who is on a two-day trip, was welcomed by the Turkish President at the presidency in Ankara.
Sharif on Thursday announced that he is “leaving for Turkey with a message of unwavering solidarity”.
“I am leaving for Türkiye with a message of unwavering solidarity and support for our Turkish brothers and sisters from the people and government of Pakistan. True to the spirit of one nation living in two states, we consider their loss as ours,” Sharif tweeted.

The visit by Pakistan PM came a week after Turkey had cancelled Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to the country as it was busy in earthquake rescue and relief operations.
PM Sharif, foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto and other officials were supposed to visit Turkey for solidarity on February 8.
However, two days after cancelling Shehbaz’s visit, Ankara gave a go-ahead to Qatar’s Emir to visit along with a high-level delegation.
The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, visited Turkey on Sunday and met President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The Pakistan government sent medical squads, search and rescue teams, and relief materials via two military aircraft and one passenger plane to Turkey to help rescue victims, according to the military media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement.

A contingent of the Turkish Army presented a salute to the prime minister, who is on his maiden visit to Turkey after assuming office.
The prime minister was accompanied by Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information and Broadcasting Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Minister for Investment Board Chaudhry Salik Hussain, and special assistants to the prime minister Tariq Fatemi and Fahd Husain.
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari reached the Turkish capital yesterday and was received by Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin. He will later rejoin the prime minister's delegation.
During his visit, the prime minister will have a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan which would be followed by delegation-level talks.
Besides discussing the Pakistan-Turkey bilateral relations, the two leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues. They will also address a Joint press conference after their meetings.
The prime minister will have extensive interaction with leading Turkish businessmen and potential investors from diverse sectors.
He will also attend a Pakistan-Turkey Business Council Forum, hosted in collaboration with the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board.
A business delegation from Pakistan comprising representatives of leading companies across various sectors will also participate in the business engagements.
PM Shehbaz will also visit the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, and issue a commemorative plaque alongside President Erdogan to mark 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
'Support on all issues'
Earlier, the premier hailed "exemplary" relations between Pakistan and Turkey, saying the countries support each other on all issues of core interest including the disputes related to occupied Kashmir and Northern Cyprus.
He made the remarks in an interview with Turkish media outlet Anadolu Agency ahead of his three-day visit to the country.
In the interview, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan and Turkey had always stood by each other for the last 75 years. "These historical relations are grounded firmly in common religious, cultural and linguistic links and transcend political changes on either side."
Both countries had similar views on regional and international issues and collaborated closely on bilateral, regional and multilateral forums, he said.
He also thanked Turkey's leadership for its principled support on the Kashmir issue.
The prime minister said that while cultural and people-to-people relations between the two countries were on an upward trajectory, Pakistan was now focusing on increasing economic cooperation.
"The current level of bilateral trade is still not a true reflection of the excellent state of our relationship. This is also an area where immense opportunities exist for both countries. During my visit here, I am meeting leading Turkish business companies to encourage them to utilise the immense opportunities existing in Pakistan in various fields, including energy, infrastructure, e-commerce, municipal agro-based industry and IT sectors, etc."
Trade with India
In response to a question about trade with India, Prime Minister Shehbaz said Pakistan and India had a "lot to gain from mutually beneficial trade".
However, Pakistan had taken the decision to downgrade relations with India after Aug 5, 2019, when it revoked occupied Kashmir's special autonomy, he recalled.
"We are cognisant of the economic dividends that can be accrued from a healthy trade activity with India. However, in the wake of continued brutalisation of the Kashmiri people, attempts to change the demographic structure of the occupied territory, and continued denial by India of the Kashmiris' rights, it is hard to imagine that progress can be made on the trade front."
He further said that India would have to take the onus for normalisation of relations by revisiting its decision of Aug 2019 and creating a conducive environment for dialogue.
Pak-US ties
When the premier was questioned about Pakistan's place in the United States' policy on the Asia-Pacific region, he said the two countries had a "longstanding and broad-based relationship".
Pakistan wanted to deepen and widen its engagement with the US, he said, pointing out that the country was the biggest export market and a major source of investment and revenue.
There is a lot of potential to expand the trade, commercial and investment aspects of this relationship even further, he added.
The prime minister also urged US companies to invest in Pakistan, especially in the information technology sector.
PTI invited to discuss charter of economy
Prime Minister Shehbaz stressed that the PML-N-led coalition government did not believe in "any kind of polarisation". The incumbent government was formed of "almost all" political forces from the provinces, except the PTI, he added.
"I believe in political accommodation and dialogue. For this reason, I have invited all political forces, including the PTI, to sit together and agree on the charter of the economy. For Pakistan to break the boom and bust cycle and gain economic stability, it is important that all political forces work out the minimum rules of the game that ensure continuity of economic policies and provide enabling environment for this purpose.
"While we are aware of the menace of political polarisation, we are working to promote political dialogue and engagement."
The PML-N government's priority since coming into power in April has been to stabilise the economy, he said and noted that Pakistan was facing several challenges, including external fiscal pressures, inflation and rising food prices.
"We are paying the price for the indecisiveness of the previous government, for example, the failure to purchase fuel in a timely manner and the absence of strategic reserves of essential commodities, which was subsequently followed by purchases at a higher price. This impacted the poor people."
However, the incumbent government was focused on improving socioeconomic indicators, particularly for the vulnerable segment of society, he added. He further said the government was working on a tight monetary policy, reduction of fiscal deficit, relief package for the poor, and building strategic reserves of essential commodities.
"We are hopeful that the IMF (International Monetary Fund) will release the next tranche, which will build the confidence of the international market for investment in Pakistan, thereby alleviating the pressure on foreign exchange reserves."
Prime Minister Shehbaz said Pakistan fully supported the five-pronged approach of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with the emphasis on physical connectivity, financial cooperation, trade facilitation, policy consultation, and people-to-people linkages.
"With the CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor), we have successfully realised our countries' shared vision and the BRI's ideals. With CPEC entering a new phase of high-quality development, our Belt and Road cooperation will accelerate Pakistan's industrial and economic modernisation.
"Pakistan is committed to the high-quality development of CPEC, including improvements in Pakistan's railways' infrastructure and full realisation of Gwadar Port's potential," he added.
'Necessary to engage with Afghan govt'
The premier also said that it was a necessity and not a matter of choice to engage with the interim government in Afghanistan.
"The world cannot abandon the Afghan people. It must shoulder the responsibility to immediately address the country's humanitarian crisis and fragile economy," he said and warned that a "total collapse" of its economy would be disastrous for Afghans, Pakistanis and the international community.
"The outflow of refugees and transnational terrorism from a destabilised Afghanistan does not serve the interests of anyone," he cautioned.
"Pakistan is also emphasising to the interim government to live up to their international commitments that the country will not be used for terrorism, that girls and women be able to pursue education, and that they form an inclusive government. The international community should continue to engage with them on these commitments."
When questioned whether the Afghan government had given assurances that its land would not be used against Pakistan, PM Shehbaz responded, "The current authorities in Kabul have repeatedly given assurances to us as well as to the wider international community that they would not allow their soil to be used against any country.
"They have also committed to take stern actions against all terrorist outfits and remove all safe havens from their territory."
The premier said he expected the Afghan government to stand by the commitments it made.

Earlier, Shehbaz Sharif in a tweet said, “I am leaving for Turkiye with a message of unwavering solidarity and support for our Turkish brothers and sisters from the people and government of Pakistan.”
“True to the spirit of one nation living in two states, we consider their loss as ours,” he said.
During his two-day stay, the prime minister will meet President of Turkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan to personally convey heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire Pakistani nation over the loss of lives and the widespread damage.
The prime minister will reiterate Pakistan’s firm commitment to stand by the Turkish people during difficult times and to continue to extend all possible support to the ongoing relief effort.
The prime minister will also visit earthquake-affected areas in southern Turkiye, and interact with the Pakistani rescue teams deployed in the area as well as the quake survivors.
Earlier on February 6, the prime minister spoke to President Erdogan and assured him of all possible assistance for the rescue and relief effort.
It is pertinent to note that Pakistan and Turkiye enjoy deep fraternal ties. The two countries have resolutely stood by each other during every trial and tribulation.

Islamabad [Pakistan], November 25 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif landed in Turkey for a two-day visit to the Western Asian country for deepening the defence cooperation between the two countries.
Taking to Twitter, Sharif said, “Being in Turkey feels like being home, overwhelmed by the warmth of our Turkish brothers and sisters. Our bilateral ties have entered a new era of strategic partnership under the leadership of President Erdogan. We are on course to unpack the full untapped potential of relationship.”
Upon his arrival, PM Sharif was received by Istanbul’s deputy governor, senior Turkish civil and military officials, and diplomats of the Pakistani Embassy and Consulate at the Islamabad International Airport, Geo News reported.
The prime minister is undertaking the visit at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Before leaving for Turkey, the Pakistani PM said that he is there to inaugrate the third MILGEM Corvette Ship, which represents the deepening of defence cooperation.
“Leaving for 2-day visit to Turkiye at the invitation of my brother President Tayyip Erdogan. Inauguration of third MILGEM Corvette Ship represents deepening of defence cooperation between our two brotherly countries. High-level exchanges are a defining feature of our partnership,” he said in a tweet.
According to Geo News citing a statement issued by the Foreign Office, the two leaders will also hold wide-ranging discussions encompassing bilateral relations, the regional situation and other issues of common interest.
During his stay in Istanbul, the president of the ECO Trade and Development Bank (ETDB) will call on the prime minister, the FO said, adding that the PM will also interact with the leaders of the Turkish business community.
Pakistan and Turkey enjoy a good relationship where the latter has supplied various models of combat UAVs to the former country, according to The Balochistan Post-English.
According to the information on the microblogging site Twitter and Pakistan-based defence blogs, Chinese CH-4B UAVs were spotted over Bolan, Balochistan, where the rebels killed two SSG Commandos, reported The Eurasian Times.
Notably, the MILGEM project, based on joint collaboration between the two countries, represents a significant milestone in the Pakistan-Turkey strategic partnership that continues progressing on an upward trajectory, Geo News reported.
It is pertinent to mention here that the launching ceremony for the first Corvette for the Pakistan Navy, PNS Babur, was performed in Istanbul in August 2021 while the groundbreaking for the Second Ship, PNS Badr, was held at Karachi in May 2022.
PM Shehbaz Sharif last visited Turkiye in May-June 2022, reported Geo News. (ANI)

Turkey allows Qatar Emir’s visit days after cancelling Pakistan PM Shehbaz's visit amid earthquake
Earlier last week, turkey directed pakistan's prime minister to cancel his visit to ankara as the country's ministers are busy with relief and rescue operations..
The major embarrassment for PM Sharif came at the very last moment when he was scheduled to visit the devastated country on Wednesday morning. According to Pakistani media reports, PM Sharif and foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto were scheduled to visit Ankara on February 8 in solidarity with the victims killed in the earthquake. However, the host country denied their entry saying "its ministers have no time to entertain Pakistani PM and delegation".
Turkey allows Qatar to visit Ankara
However, Ankara has allowed Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, to land in their country and arranged an immediate meeting with its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Interestingly, Qatar donated 50 million Qatari riyals, an air bridge equipped with relief and health materials and 10,000 mobile homes on Friday.
Notably, Turkey, which is the worst-earthquake-affected country, was hit by a massive quake on Monday, resulting in the killing of more than 36,000 people. According to the Turkish authorities, the toll is expected to only rise in the coming days as thousands of people are still trapped under the debris of skyscraper buildings.
Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan’s information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb informed that the debt-ridden Prime Minister would leave for Ankara on Wednesday morning. “He will express his condolences and condolences to President Erdogan for the destruction of the earthquake, the loss of life, and the people of Turkey. Due to Prime Minister’s visit to Turkey, the APC convened on Thursday is being postponed, a new date will be announced in consultation with the allies," she said.
Bad weather?
Hours after her tweet, Azam Jamil, former special assistant to Prime Minister, took to social media and wrote, "The last thing Turkey wants at a time like this is to look after state guests. Please send relief staff only." Citing sources in Pakistan's foreign ministry, Express News reported that Sharif's visit has been postponed due to bad weather and the Turkish leadership's engagements related to the ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
It added that Pakistan's premiere would not be able to visit the affected areas as the helicopter could not fly during bad weather. Also, it noted that president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his vice president are also engaged in relief activities.

Turkey’s Erdogan expected to visit Pakistan next month
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to visit Pakistan next month.
Sources privy to the development told ARY News that the Turkish president will undertake an official visit to Pakistan in the first week of August. He would be accompanied by a high-level delegation including Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
During his stay in Pakistan, Erdogan will hold a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss matters pertaining to mutual interest.
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will hold a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
The two sides would sign a range of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for enhancing economic and trade cooperation in different sectors, they say.
It is pertinent to mention here that PM Shehbaz Sharif last month travelled to Turkiye to join the world leaders in the inauguration ceremony of President Erdogan.
During his stay in Ankara, the prime minister met a number of world leaders and discussed avenues of cooperation in various fields.

Israel-Gaza latest: Biden says Netanyahu making 'a mistake' on Gaza
The US president has said he disagrees with Israel's approach to the war. It comes after Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on his pledge to go forward with his invasion of Rafah. Listen to a Daily episode on how the war could be worsening Yemen's humanitarian crisis as you scroll.

Muslims have performed Eid al Fitr prayers in Jerusalem to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
Hundreds attended the prayers at the Al Aqsa mosque compound, the third holiest site in Islam.
Iran's supreme leader says Israel "must be punished" for an apparent attack on an Iranian consulate building in Syria.
Tehran has blamed Israel for the airstrike in the Syrian capital of Damascus last week which killed two of its senior military commanders.
"The evil regime made a mistake and must be punished and it shall be," Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during a speech to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Israel has not commented on the strike.
Earlier this week, Iran's foreign minister accused the US of giving Israel the "green light" to target the consulate building - an accusation denied by Washington.
Joe Biden disagrees with Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the war in Gaza and has called it a "mistake".
"I think what he's doing is a mistake. I don't agree with his approach," the US president told Univision, a US Spanish-language TV network.
It's not the first time Mr Biden has been critical of the Israeli prime minister, having previously called Israel's military bombing campaign "indiscriminate" and its military operation "over the top."
Last week, the White House said Mr Biden told Mr Netanyahu future US support for the war dependent on steps it takes to prevent civilian harm. He also said during their phone call that an "immediate ceasefire" was needed to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
"What I'm calling for is for the Israelis to just call for a ceasefire, allow for the next six, eight weeks, total access to all food and medicine going into the country," Mr Biden said in comments to Univision.
Welcome back to our coverage of the Israel-Hamas war.
Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on his pledge to go forward with an offensive in Rafah, southern Gaza.
It came as the White House said an in-person meeting of Israeli and US officials on the planned operation would take place "in a couple of weeks".
Here are the other developments in the last 24 hours:
- The UK participated in the largest airdrop of aid into Gaza on a single day. Led by the Jordanian military, a total of nine nations and 14 aircraft participated in the operation;
- Israel's defence ministry is purchasing 40,000 tents ahead of an evacuation of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, according to Israeli media;
- Lord Cameron said he had reviewed the most recent advice about Israel's conduct of their military campaign and the UK's position on export licences was "unchanged";
- Three people were arrested outside Sir Keir Starmer's home after gathering nearby to protest Labour "allowing the selling of arms to Israel";
- Hamas said Israel's proposal for a truce and hostage release deal did not meet any Palestinian demands.
We'll be back tomorrow morning with more updates on the Israel-Hamas war.
Family members of American hostages being held in Gaza met with vice president Kamala Harris at the White House today to discuss the latest efforts to de-escalate the fighting in Gaza and secure the release of the Americans who have been held in Gaza.
"We are six months in, on day 186," Rachel Goldberg, the mother of American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin, said.
"There are 133 cherished souls who are being held there, and it is time. We don't want any more progress, we want results."
Washington has been applying pressure on Israel to improve humanitarian aid to Gaza.
It comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on his pledge to go forward with his invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza.
"We discussed a lot of different things, and one of the things we talked about is that there is a possibility of holding two truths you can believe, as we do, that it is horrible that innocent civilians in Gaza are suffering," Ms Goldberg added.
"And at the same time, you can also know that it is horrible and against international law for hostages to be held against their will."
In the aftermath of the Israeli military's second operation at al Shifa Hospital, the largest medical facility in Gaza bears the scars of the war.
The raid has left the hospital's infrastructure in a state of severe damage, revealing collapsed walls and charred remains.
Health workers have also exhumed bodies from mass graves around the hospital.
"We are now exhuming the dead who were executed," Hussein Muhaisen, director of ambulances, said.
US senate majority leader Chuck Schumer met Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid at the Capitol today.
The meeting came as Mr Schumer suggested last month that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not operating in his country's best interests and called for Israel to hold new elections.
Mr Lapid recently said that the senate leaders' call for elections was evidence that Mr Netanyahu was pushing Israel to lose support from its biggest supporters in the US.
Mr Netanyahu has escalated his pledge to invade the southern Gaza city of Rafah but the US has said a ground operation into the area would be a mistake and has demanded to see a credible plan to protect civilians.
Israel's "words must turn into action", Lord Cameron has said.
After the UK participated in the largest airdrop of aid into Gaza on a single day today, the foreign secretary said the UK would continue to "push Israel as hard as we can" to get more aid in.
Led by the Jordanian Armed Forces, a total of nine nations and 14 aircraft participated in the operation today, delivering essential food, water and other supplies to civilians.
An in-person meeting of Israeli and US officials on the planned operation in the Gaza city of Rafah will take place "in a couple of weeks", the White House has said this evening.
Earlier today, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on his pledge to go forward with an offensive in Rafah.
He said there were "many forces" trying to stop the Rafah offensive - a reference to other nations demanding that Israel does not go ahead - "but it will not help, because this enemy, after what it has done, will not do it again, it will cease to exist".
