Last-minute planning of a trip can consist of chaotic lists in your phone's notes app while the chronicling of said trip may look like sporadic photos in your camera roll. But what if there was a collective place you could plan in advance and jot down funny moments along the way? A travel journal can culminate the ups (and downs) of your vacation with guided prompts and templates.

Our experts at Good Housekeeping Institute extended our expertise in the best photo book makers and best wedding planning books to research the best travel journals, a category we have not yet formally tested. We rounded up the best travel journals of 2023, whether you want a self-designed bullet journal or a notebook with fun maps and stickers. At the end of our list, you can find advice on how to start your travel journal as well as read more about why you can trust Good Housekeeping. And if you have a frequent traveler in your life besides yourself, check out our guide to the best travel gift ideas (although a journal is a great idea too!).

The Art of the National Parks: Park-Lover's Journal

The Art of the National Parks: Park-Lover's Journal

Perfect for the outdoors enthusiast in your life, this journal celebrates each of the 63 parks. It's 175 pages long and comes with prompts that'll help them chronicle their journey. It doesn't hurt that this journal has gorgeous illustrations of each park by real artists.

Papier Off Piste

Off Piste

Whether this is your first or fifth travel journal, or a gift for the college student in your life who's about to go abroad, Papier's notebooks will check all of the boxes. One GH editor has the Off Piste journal and loves the cover, a simple design that includes a meaningful quote, and appreciates the helpful templates you'll find inside the notebook. You'll be able to document up to six trips with templates for your budget, packing list, transportation, accommodation, itinerary and a journaling space for freestyle writing. There are also pages dedicated to a travel wishlist as well an illustrative map you can color in as you mark off countries you've visited.

Peter Pauper Press Page-A-Day

Journals can ring in at a variety of prices, but you can find a great travel journal for under $10 that will still give you enough space to write about your wanderings around the world. This leather-bound journal dedicates one page to each day of your trip, with spaces to add in the date, location and weather conditions (we especially like the delicate drawings for types of participation which you can circle with your pencil or pen). Dotted lines on the page will keep your entries neat and organized and an included ribbon bookmark will keep track of where you left off last. Even though this journal is pretty basic in design and on the smaller side, we think it's a great option for someone who doesn't want to spend too much on their first travel journal.

Clever Fox Vacation Planner

Vacation Planner

You'll also get 150+ fun stickers to embellish your entries, plus the journal also has a pocket to hold the pages of stickers and an elastic band for your pen. But what makes this journal really stand out is its extensive range of templates geared towards helping you plan your trip. For five trips, you'll get pages for research and budget, a packing checklist, transportation and accommodation details and an expense tracker, plus a map and more journaling pages. If you like to plan out every detail, this is the perfect travel journal for your needs. We wish you could fit more than five trips in the journal, but for the price, it's a great value.

Peter Pauper Press Kids Travel Journal

You can choose from a spiral or bound format, but note that the spiral option has 130 perforated pages while the bound journal has 265 ruled sheets (or 128 pages). Regardless of which style you choose, you'll will get the benefit of a snap closure and a built-in pen loop, although the writing utensil is not included. We appreciate the versatility of this journal given the blank pages that let you doodle and write freely over the course of your next trip.

This beautiful leather bound journal not only has pages for writing about your trips, but it also includes full-color maps of major cities plus world weather information, international dialing codes and more. A perfect gift for the international traveler, you can also add a foil debossed monogram to the cover if you want to add a personal flare to the notebook. We wish that the journal was available in more than one color, but the rust orange is a versatile enough choice that will stick out in a dark suitcase or bag.

Duncan & Stone Paper Co. World Trip Adventure Book

World Trip Adventure Book

The layflat design makes it easy to open and write on, and you'll have enough pages to reflect on 15 trips plus a back pocket for extra photos and blank pages for notes and random musings. What we love most about this journal are the helpful prompts that guide newbies through the process of journaling, with questions like "Where did you stay?." and "Something I learned from this destination/culture..." From basic to more thought-provoking questions, you'll have a boost of inspiration to help you document your journey.

Day One Day One

Day One

You can download the app for free on your iPhone, Android, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. You'll get one journal for one device with the ability to add a photo per entry, plus templates, export capabilities and tags. If you want unlimited journals, devices and photos plus the option to add videos, audio recordings and more, opt for Day One Premium which rings in at $2.92 per month.

Extreme Assistants Classic Notebook

Classic Notebook

If you travel a lot, or tend to squish as much as you possibly can into your carry-on (we have all been there), you'll want a durable journal that can withstand being tossed around and bumping against other items in your bag. A faux leather hardcover and thick paper ensure your journal will stay intact as you travel to and fro. The manufacturer adds that the cover is designed to be easy to clean, which is helpful if you are journaling on the airplane or train and accidentally spill your drink. We also appreciate that you can add a photo or logo to the cover for an element of personalization, especially since the notebook is more basic in style.

Deanna Didzun The Traveler's Playbook: A World Travel Journal

The Traveler's Playbook: A World Travel Journal

Journaling of any kind can be intimidating as you don't always know where to start — even a notebook with guiding prompts can lead to partial writer's block. If this sounds like you, then opting for a book that has more structure and a variety of templates is the way to go. This popular travel journal has a 4.3-star rating on Uncommon Goods is designed by explorer Deanna Didzun who created illustrations and lists to help jog your memory of your most recent journey. Smythson Travels and Experiences Panama Notebook

Travels and Experiences Panama Notebook

There are journals and then there are journals — and this beautiful handcrafted leather journal falls into the latter category. Bound in crossgrain lambskin and available in a light blue or scarlet red, you'll have 128 pages of lined Featherweight paper to fill. This notebook is all about quality and is designed to last, but with that comes a higher price tag. It would be a great gift for the writer in your life who loves to travel, but given its simple layout and lack of templates other travel journals can have, it may not be splurge-worthy for every traveler.

DesignWorks Ink Suede Travel Journal

Suede Travel Journal

If you or a friend is traveling to Santorini, Mexico and/or Sydney in the near future, you may want to opt for this travel journal inspired by each of those stunning cities. You can add personal information in the first page of the notebook and the 240 pages are lined with spaces to include the subject and date. Although the journal does not include prompts or templates, we love the eye-catching gold design and appreciate the ribbon bookmark to keep track of your last entry.

Moleskine Traveller's Journal

We have included travel journals on this list that have prompts but none like the unexpected ones in this notebook that will get your creative wheels turning. The questions may catch you off guard, but prompt thoughtful reflection: they range from "If this place had a perfume, it would smell like..." to, "If this place had a soundtrack, these songs would be on it." The notebook is Amazon's Choice and has a 4.5-star rating, with multiple customers calling it the perfect gift for the traveler in your life, whether you need a gift for a teen or a present for a thirtieth birthday .

Keeping a bullet journal is a popular trend that can easily translate to an aesthetic yet meaningful travel journal. This popular bullet notebook has a 4.7-star rating on Amazon with over 18 color options to chose from including mustard yellow (pictured), burgundy, lavender, royal blue and more. The 5.7-by-8-inch dotted pages lend themselves to open-ended creativity. While it can be hard to start designing and writing a journal from scratch, you have the benefit of customizing how much space you want for each list or entry.

Polarsteps Travel Tracker

Travel Tracker

Physical journals are not everyone's cup of tea, which is where an app like Polarsteps comes into play. Available for iOS and Android devices, Polarsteps lets travelers track their journeys. You can utilize over 300 helpful guides created by travel editors, as well as use the itinerary planner to dream up your perfect vacation and check the transport planner when unsure of what mode of transportation to use from one destination to another. Once you begin your trip, plot each site you visit and slowly form a personalized map that you can embellish with photos and videos. From there, share your map with friends and family or turn it into a travel book to look back on for years to come.

Glad & Young Studio The Traveler's Journal

The Traveler's Journal

If you have a bookshelf with rows of novels, photo albums and notebooks, you may want an aesthetic-looking travel journal that fits your style. This leather notebook has 60 pages to document your travels, and is available in a neutral shade (pictured) as well as two marbled patterns that are unique to each purchase. We personally love the brightly colored assorted pattern that has swirls of lavender, yellow, fuchsia and blue. The lined pages are great for daily entries and you can also note the day and weather. Note that to clean, you'll want to wipe away and spills or messes with a soft cloth.

How to Choose the Best Journal for You

Selecting the perfect travel journal is like choosing a trusty companion for your adventures, one that will faithfully capture the nature of your journeys. To streamline this process and ensure you go on your travels well-prepared, consider the following steps when selecting the travel journal that will become your constant voyage confidant.

Travel Intentions

Begin by understanding the purpose of your travel journal. Are you documenting a specific trip, recording travel memories, or sketching your way through foreign landscapes? Your journal’s purpose will guide your choice.

Size and Portability

Think about the practicality of carrying your journal during your travels. Compact and lightweight options are preferable for on-the-go adventures, while more substantial journals suit longer trips or those with ample downtime.

Paper Quality

Assess the quality of the paper, as it can significantly impact your writing or sketching experience. Consider factors such as paper thickness, texture, and whether it accommodates your preferred writing and drawing tools.

Binding and Cover

Choose a binding style that caters to your travel needs. Whether it’s a durable hardcover for added protection or a flexible cover that can adapt to your journey’s demands, the binding should match your travel style.

Layout and Design

Depending on your creative preferences, opt for blank pages to unleash unstructured creativity or lined and dotted grids for organized travelog entries. The cover design should also resonate with your wanderlust spirit.

Number of Pages

Estimate how many pages you’ll need for your travel journal. A thicker journal may be essential if you’re going on an extensive journey to ensure you don’t run out of space.

Travel-Focused Features

Some travel journals come with bonus features like pockets for collecting mementos, built-in bookmarks, or even prompts to inspire your travel writing. Choose the ones that enhance your travel documentation experience.

Personal Connection

Sometimes, a travel journal will simply call out to you. Trust your instincts if you feel a personal connection to a particular journal based on its design, feel, or overall appeal.

Reviews and Recommendations

Explore reviews and seek recommendations from fellow travelers who have experience with travel journals. Their insights can be invaluable in making an informed decision.

Customization

For a unique touch, consider customizing your travel journal with your name, a travel quote, or an image that holds special significance.

The ideal travel journal is the one that resonates with your traveling style, suits your travel intentions, and invites you to preserve the memories of your explorations.

Mark & Graham travel products are constantly earning top scores in the plethora of product testing we do here at Travel + Leisure . The high-quality materials and superior organizational features are usually the most notable features from the brand, but we love the unique personalization options, too.

Perfect for wedding gifts, birthday presents, or picking out a little something for yourself, the brand carries suitcases, purses, passport covers, jewelry cases, and more with the option to monogram most items for an extra fee (or even for free in some cases). We tested several items from the brand and our favorites include luggage pieces and travel accessories that make any trip much more efficient and stylish.

Mark & Graham Lightweight Packable Puffer Tote

Mark & Graham

It’s stylish and can fit underneath an airplane seat when packed full.

The puffer material might not be best for warmer seasons.

This packable puffer tote is a cold-weather staple since it’s made out of the same material as a winter jacket. It’s exceptionally lightweight and stylish, which makes it the perfect personal item as well as an ideal option when going to the gym, taking a road trip, or even for everyday use. The tote folds into a carrying case and, because it’s made with puffer material, we found that it conveniently doubles as a travel pillow as needed. Plus, the tote has various other practical features like a 16-inch laptop compartment and tons of slip and zippered pockets for extra storage.

Best Weekender

Mark & graham canvas and leather weekender.

The bag has expandable corners to add more or less space as needed.

The straps could be more comfortable.

Spacious and stylish, this canvas weekender bag makes it easy to pack for a getaway. It has a wide top opening so you can see every inch of the interior, which is helpful for organizing items in the main compartment, plus two zippered pockets. Whether packing winter jackets or several pairs of shoes, the large duffel bag can accommodate a range of items for all-season travel. The cotton canvas material feels durable and flexible, and we love that the bag has metal feet on the bottom to distance it from the floor. The leather-accented tote and shoulder straps could be a bit more comfortable, but it’s by no means a deal breaker.

The Details: 31 x 17.5 x 12.5 inches | Cotton canvas

Best Garment Bag

Mark & graham commuter 2-in-1 garment bag.

It’s loaded with pockets for organization and it can qualify as a carry-on.

The zippers may snag a bit.

This garment bag from Mark & Graham earned perfect ratings after a series of trials and was the best one we tested overall. We were able to fit a suit, two dresses, several pairs of shoes, and other accessories into the bag, plus it folds up easily to keep all the items in place during a trip. There are various slip and zippered compartments to store shoes and accessories, and the hanger hook and zippered garment bag will protect clothing to keep it separate from other packed items. Even when it’s full, it’s small enough to count as a carry-on for most airlines so you can bring it right onboard. We did notice that the zippers may snag a bit after several months of use but you can use wax, dish soap, or another lubricant to help reduce this issue.

Best Tech Organizer

Mark & graham essential tech folio.

It has plenty of spots for technology and cords, and it’s small enough to fit in a purse.

The overall case is slim so it can’t accommodate bulkier items.

Traveling with tech gadgets, such as a digital translator , and cords can be a pain so this organizer is perfect for keeping everything in one spot and untangled. The zippered clutch has plenty of pockets, including two sleeves for a tablet and an eReader, several credit card slots, various slip pockets for earbuds, and two snap closures for cords. The organizer has a smooth zipper closure that keeps all of the items safely tucked away, and it’s easy to pull out the case before placing a bag in the overhead bin. However, because it’s on the slimmer side, you won’t be able to fit thick items in it like an iPad with a keyboard case or a book into this organizer.

The Details: 17 x 11 x 8.5 inches | Leather, PU

Best Jewelry Case

Mark & graham small travel jewelry case.

There are tons of colorways and patterns to choose.

The box can’t fit bigger pieces of jewelry like watches.

Similar to the tech case above, the brand’s jewelry box won us over during testing for having superior organization compared to others we tried. The jewelry case has two main compartments with a mirrored divider, so you’ll always be able to see where to place your jewelry on the go. The bottom compartment features eight ring pillows and four divided compartments for earrings, bracelets, and more. For even more storage, the top section boasts three necklace clasps and a slip pocket, which means you’ll basically never run out of space for jewelry whether your trip is short or long. Thanks to all of the secure pockets and compartments, all of the jewelry remained in place even after we shook it like a salad during testing.

The Details: 4.5 X 4.5 X 2.25 inches | Pebbled vegan leather

Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

Mark & Graham Fillmore Vegan Diamond Travel Pouch

It has a clamshell design so both sides of the pouch open flat to see the contents of the bag clearly.

The liner can get caught in the zipper easily.

This versatile pouch functions as a do-it-all travel bag thanks to its minimalist design. The pouch can serve as a makeup bag, cosmetic case, or it can store small necessities like phone chargers, earbuds, passports, and more. Our favorite part of the bag is that the zipper goes down the sides of the bag so it opens up nearly flat, which makes it easy to see all the contents packed inside. Made with vegan leather, the pouch offers a simple and elegant look with gold hardware, and it comes in five neutral colors.

The Details: 8.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches | Vegan leather

We tested and loved just a few of the brand’s best-selling items but there are plenty of other products that Mark & Graham carries. For traveling with your furry friend, the Buddy Pet Carrier is perfect for transporting your dog, or be sure to check out the stylish Terminal 1 Carry-on if you’re in search of a suitcase. There are tons of options for purses and handbags, too, like the practical Classic Leather Phone Crossbody Bag .

Consider organization features

Keep in mind that some products from Mark & Graham will be better than others for organization. The beach bags and packable totes don’t feature as many pockets for storage, but boast a large capacity and the ability to pack down easily. Other items like garment bags and tech cases are designed with a plethora of storage solutions so, if you’re on the hunt for organizational features, opt for a product that is specifically made for sorting items for travel.

For the widest selection of products, the Mark & Graham website is your best bet for browsing thousands of products in every colorway and personalization option possible. Pottery Barn also carries some luggage from the brand, but you’ll miss out on the possibility of getting the suitcases monogrammed with initials.

Besides the organizational features, we also love that almost every single Mark & Graham item can be personalized for an added fee or even for free. Depending on the material of the product, there are monogramming options through foil debossing, engraving, vinyl decal, embroidery, laser-etching, and hand-stamping. It costs around $12.50 for monogramming with options ranging from single initials to text up to 12 characters , but there are tons of products that have the option for free customization instead.

A tornado watch and a fire weather watch in effect for 9 regions in the area

During solar eclipse totality, you may be able to spot these planets in the dark sky, if the clouds clear enough, you could see jupiter, venus and maybe even mars and saturn.

Julie Moreno , Executive Producer/Digital Content

As if a total solar eclipse wasn’t enough of a draw for skygazers, there will be some other objects that may make an appearance when the sky goes dark.

Jupiter and Venus may be visible during totality.

Recommended Videos

Of course, there’s a “BIG IF” — and that’s the amount of cloud cover. If it’s too cloudy, those planets won’t be visible.

>> Get the eclipse forecast here

But, let’s be optimistic.

If skies are clear, you should be able to spot Jupiter about 30 degrees to the upper left of the eclipsed sun. Venus will be about 15 degrees to the lower right of the sun.

Mars and Saturn will be to the right, lower than Venus, but they will be harder to spot.

Mercury and Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks will also be in the sky, but you’ll need binoculars or a telescope to see them.

Outside of totality, it’s unsafe to look directly at the sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars or other optical device.

The Texas Optometric Association said it’s also unsafe to use those unfiltered devices, EVEN with your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer, because the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing injury.

You can read more about eye safety during the solar eclipse here .

As your official Eclipse Authority station, KSAT will have everything you need to enjoy the spectacular event, including multiple livestreams from different parts of the region on the big day. KSAT meteorologists, anchors and reporters will be in full force at each location.

You can watch the live coverage on KSAT 12, KSAT.com , KSAT+ , the KSAT Weather and News apps , and in this article .

From noon to 2 p.m., you can choose the angle you’d like to watch the eclipse from these locations:

  • A dedicated feed showing the entire eclipse
  • Fredericksburg
  • Elementary school watch party on the Northwest Side of San Antonio
  • The Rock at La Cantera

Traffic delays and other issues mark total solar eclipse day

mark & graham travel journal

Authorities on Monday reported traffic crashes and significant road delays across the country as thousands of people flocked to prime locations to gaze up at the rare solar eclipse – and then made their way home again.

Local roads and highways in states including Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Vermont and New Hampshire were impacted by the flood of drivers, many of whom were from out of state. The most intense bottlenecks appeared to be in the path of totality , a vast swath of the country – approximately 115 miles wide, crossing through 13 states – where people were able to view the total eclipse.

Traffic slowed on major highways in Indiana as the eclipse progressed Monday afternoon. State transportation officials posted video showing backups forming on Interstate 65 headed toward Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported. The Courier & Press in Evansville reported delays after the eclipse ended.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine posted on X that traffic on state highways was flowing but rest stops along interstates in the path of totality are at or near capacity.

Perrine said transportation officials planned to shut them down "once they are full and will not allow any more traffic in for the duration of the eclipse." One rest stop along I-74 near Veedersburg, northwest of Indianapolis, closed because it had reached maximum capacity from "eclipse viewing traffic."

In Oklahoma, a crash around 7:30 a.m. local time narrowed eastbound lanes on I-40, a major transcontinental highway that runs from California to North Carolina. The crash occurred not far from several state parks that were hosting eclipse events, and was within driving distance of the full eclipse path, which included parts of southeastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

"Crews estimate cleanup will take the majority of the day. Expect delays in the area and use extra caution. #trucking #eclipse," said a post on X by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation .

Multiple crashes were reported in Waco, Texas, a city in the path of totality, which hosted several festivities and eclipse viewing events. The crashes all occurred on I-35, which runs from southern Texas to Minnesota. The wrecks shut down multiple lanes.

"Expect major traffic delays in this area," the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement around 9 a.m. local time.

Officials warn drivers of delays, dangers ahead of solar eclipse

In the weeks leading up to the celestial event, officials issued warnings about heavy traffic congestion and the danger of driving during the eclipse , including distracted pedestrians and the sudden change in light conditions. Eclipses have previously been tied with surges in traffic crashes, including fatal collisions.

In New York, extra troopers were staged throughout the entire state, especially in northern counties and cities, such as Buffalo, from which spectators can see a full eclipse, according to the New York State Police .

In Ohio, the state's Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission heavily staffed its toll booths, service plazas and maintenance buildings in anticipation of the eclipse, which it has designated as "a high-volume traffic event" like, for example, Thanksgiving.  The Ohio Emergency Management Agency estimates, for the solar eclipse, between 150,000 and 575,000 travelers will visit the state, which encompasses areas in the path of totality.

During the 2017 eclipse, congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests the worst of the traffic – on interstates and rural back roads alike – will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to leave all at once.

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

mark & graham travel journal

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.
