Tour buses chart new course as the industry awaits a comeback

Photo of competing tour buses on the Upper West Side in Manhattan

Competing tour buses on the Upper West Side

The hulking double-decker buses that usher visitors uptown and down might seem like mere tourist traps to seasoned New Yorkers. But they are an integral part of the local tourism industry.  And just like other businesses in the sector, the tour bus industry has taken a major hit during the Covid-19 pandemic. As operators wait for international tourism to bounce back, many of the buses have disappeared from the cityscape. The ones that remain offer scantier services, such as fewer routes and no more live tour guides—once a major draw for tourists. Now, with ridership down and regulatory hurdles on the horizon, the remaining New York operators look to chart a new course.

The end of the live tour guide

Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” plays through maroon headphones given out at the start of every Big Bus tour. Beginning in Times Square, the double-decker buses usher tourists to the Empire State Building, Central Park and other major attractions.  Big Bus was moving along “swimmingly” until Covid-19 entered the city, said Julia Conway, its executive vice president for North America. The company operates in 23 cities total, eight of them in the U.S. Before 2020 it provided more than a million rides per year in the New York market. But General Manager Charles Nolen said during a public meeting last year that ridership had declined by as much as 95%. The city currently has three registered double-decker hop-on, hop-off operators: Big Bus Tours, Gray Line and TopView. For all of them, tour guides were an essential part of the experience before the pandemic. The workers also played a role in ensuring passenger safety, some say. Paul Stewart, who was a Big Bus guide before the pandemic began and worked for four months at Gray Line in 2014, told Crain’s he handled a number of rider issues. “Every day I would come back with some crazy story: ‘If I had not been there, this could have been a problem,’” Stewart said.  There are rules in place for customer safety, he noted, but in the excitement or due to language barriers, many customers don’t follow them.  According to Ira Berg, a former tour guide who was laid off by Big Bus at the start of the pandemic, there have been numerous incidents in which drivers were involved in crashes, or riders on the top level of a double-decker vehicle were struck by traffic lights, scaffolding or tree branches. In some instances, he recalled, customers needed medical attention.

believe bus tour

“Having a set of eyes up on top … is absolutely essential for rider safety,” Berg said.

Now no double-decker buses in the city offer a live tour guide.

Statistics provided by Big Bus suggest that the elimination of guides has not negatively affected safety. The city does not keep statistics on injuries specifically related to tour buses. Conway said Big Bus’ stats show a downward trend of injuries per mile traveled since the pandemic began.

Big Bus shared that in 2015 it noted almost 34 injuries per 100 million miles traveled, followed by almost 48 in 2016, 23 in 2017, 61 in 2018 and 48 in 2019. There were about 10 injuries per million miles traveled in 2020, with none reported last year or as of April this year. Ridership has been much lower during the pandemic. “Safety is paramount for us, as it is for every transportation service provider,” Conway said.

Workers unionized at TopView in 2015 and Big Bus in 2016. A year after tour guides at TopView unionized, the company switched to automated recordings. Big Bus laid off its guides at the start of the pandemic and has not rehired them despite restarting operations.  Big Bus is happy without live tour guides for the basic hop-on, hop-off rides, Conway said, although the company does see a place for them in premium experiences such as night tours, which haven’t returned yet.  Some former guides told Crain’s drivers now carry an additional burden, as they now field customers’ questions in addition to driving.  “Drivers are supposed to drive, and tour guides are supposed to do the tour,” said Fred Pflantzer, a former guide for TopView and CitySights. “You have a safety issue more than anything else.”

But Conway said drivers have always answered questions, and they operated the prerecorded tours for international tourists who don’t speak English. On a recent Big Bus ride, a Crain’s staff member noted that the vehicle’s driver stopped the bus a handful of times and came to the upper level to deliver information about interesting points along the route.

Following a series of crashes involving sightseeing buses, legislation was put before the City Council in 2016. It proposed requiring a second employee on top of double-decker buses for safety and imposing a cap on the number of licensed buses in the city.  The council’s transportation committee held a hearing in 2018. Representatives from Big Bus, Gray Line and TopView were there to decry the proposed cap on buses. The legislation is still pending.

Big Bus driver Jamie Urquieta shares information about the tour route with riders in Manhattan.

Past and future

It is not clear when double-decker buses first appeared in the city, but the iconic New York Apple Tours debuted in 1992. Gray Line New York’s hop-on, hop-off tour business might predate New York Apple Tours’, according to court records, but it is clear that Gray Line and its parent company, Coach, were a dominant double-decker company by 1998. The city was home to 27 bus tour companies in 1995.  In 2000 Coach acquired many of New York Apple Tours’ assets and employees after the company was forced out of business due to safety and traffic violations, according to an antitrust complaint.  Coach’s market dominance was threatened in 2005, however, when CitySights entered the scene. CitySights and Coach engaged in “vigorous” competition on price and product offerings—which directly benefited consumers, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.  The competition ended in 2009, when the companies formed Twin America, which controlled 99% of the market for three years, preventing other companies from launching in New York by controlling the majority of the permitted bus stops. The Department of Justice and the state Attorney General’s Office reached a settlement with Twin America to remedy competition concerns in March 2015. The settlement required the firm to disgorge $7.5 million in ill-gotten profits it obtained by operating the joint venture in violation of antitrust laws.  Big Bus entered the scene by purchasing three existing tour bus companies between 2014 and 2017. Go New York Tours, which markets itself as TopView, launched here in 2012, according to court documents. Unlike Big Bus and Gray Line, TopView is a local company that operates only in New York City.

BY THE NUMBERS

27: The number of bus tour companies operating in New York City in 1995. There are now three.

$75: Price of an adult ticket on one of TopView’s all-day tours

When pandemic restrictions were lifted, Big Bus jettisoned its less-traveled routes. It is currently focusing its resources on its downtown loop and a condensed version of its uptown route, Conway said. Right now, she said, it doesn’t plan to reinstate a more robust schedule any time soon because the demand is not there.  Prices have stayed generally stable over the years. TopView’s brochure advertises $75 adult tickets for an all-day hop-on, hop-off tour, while Big Bus advertises $60 for the same. In 2019 TopView was advertising $55 for an all-day pass, the same as Big Bus. As for the visitors who purchase the passes, it might be some time before tourism consistently returns to pre-pandemic levels . NYC & Company, the marketing organization for the city, projects a complete rebound for tourism could take until 2024 or 2025.

The Times Square Alliance reported a weekly average of 345,590 visitors per day for the last week of June, down 15.3% from the same period in 2019. But the weekend of July 16, Times Square averaged 420,000 people per day—almost 10% higher than the similar weekend in 2019. As the firms wait for international tourism to rebound fully, Big Bus has begun working with Gray Line, carrying its guests, as it remains shuttered. Customer who buy a Big Bus ticket online can now redeem it at one of the Gray Line ticket agents, or vice versa.  “Until there’s enough gas for more buses, this just seemed like a really pragmatic decision,” Conway said. “And it’s worked well for both of us.”  A Gray Line spokesman said the company plans to start running its buses again in the fourth quarter, but the firm declined to discuss the industry.  TopView did not respond to a request for comment.  Even with the changing landscape, some industry insiders said they believe bus tours are essential to ensuring travelers enjoy their visit to the city. “I do think [the double-decker buses] are a big part of the tourism industry in New York City,” said Ric Stoneback, a former tour guide who has been in the industry since the early 1990s.

Remembering Black Dallas revives forgotten history with new bus tours

A group of people in a park stand circled around a statue of a bird as someone speaks into a microphone

All around Dallas are markers telling the rich Black history that shaped the city: White Rock Chapel, the Pittman Hotel, Keller Springs Road.

But words don’t travel as fast as you think, and some stories are forgotten.

That’s why the historical organization Remembering Black Dallas created a new series of tours — funded partially through a grant from the city's Office of Arts and Culture — highlighting these and other areas in modern-day Dallas County that were once hubs for the Black community.

“Our main focus is to draw light on the history and of the African American freedom towns, communities and those individuals that others may not know anything about,” said Deborah Hopes, the president of Remembering Black Dallas.

Hopes, a South Dallas native, named the venture the Ukunika Bus and Walking Tour after the Zulu word meaning “to give back.” The monthly tours were an idea first put forward by RBD founder George Keaton, and it was one Hopes wanted to keep alive. They both had the benefit of living through some of that history or were taught stories of a time before them.

“We have others that are from that community, or they had grandparents or relatives that lived in those communities that shared stories,” Hopes said.

She said RBD didn’t start the tours out of fear of forgetting the community’s history, but rather as a chance to relive old memories. She believes this is the first step to recognizing Black history while her peers are still around to educate others.

“History in itself doesn't change. History in itself remains the same,” she said. “But if you don't know it, then you are not privy to it.”

Unforgettable history

The first of the Ukunika bus tours took attendees around South Dallas, focusing on women’s history and how the civil rights movement affected the area. It highlighted American activists like Julia C. Frazier, Pearl C. Anderson and Juanita J. Craft, whose house — which hosted Martin Luther King. Jr and Lyndon B. Johnson — was among the stops.

“I think Dallas can be a very ahistoric place,” said Phaedra Gwyn, who grew up in the city but said she had no idea the cultural significance the neighborhood carried. “I was really happy to learn more about the civil rights movement in Dallas and Black people's contributions.”

Another attendee, Courtney Simmons, was raised in Dallas and attended Lincoln High School. She brought her daughters on the tour so they could see how her neighborhood has changed, and how it’s preserved its culture.

“The infiltration of the city and how it just kind of [reduced] the Black community down and how it got a little disenfranchised, but there's still efforts going on today to keep those visions alive,” Simmons said.

Others grew up in the city and had no idea of the cultural significance these neighborhoods carried.

Another tour covered the area known today as North Dallas, which was established as a Freedmen’s Town in the Reconstruction period after the Civil War.

The area associated with North Park, the Galleria and the former Valley View Mall was once home to Dallas’s oldest and most prominent Black landowners, including Anderson Bonner, Henry Keller and George Coit.

“I traveled up and down Coit Road and didn't realize it was named after a Black person,” said RBD member Karl Lewis. “And I doubt very few people realize that.”

Passengers got a chance to meet several notable Dallas natives who have seen the city change firsthand.

Patricia Price Hicks, who is on the Dallas County Historical Commission, shared her experience growing up in Hamilton Park, an area named after prominent landowner Richard Theodore Hamilton.

“This was unheard of because there was no Black community per se,” Hicks said.

The group explored the hidden White Rock Cemetery Garden of Memories, where they were met by Glen Bonner — one of Anderson’s descendants.

“This was the first known interracial cemetery in North Dallas, North Texas area, actually,” Bonner said.

Hearing about forgotten history brought up a lot of emotions for some attendees. Sicily Whetstone is a grad student who attended the tour for a school project. She said she sees the tour as a form of reparations for Black Dallas that also educates the public.

“Those people have [been] lost in history,” she said. “So, I'm really thinking the reparations really need to go deep, starting maybe in the graveyards and the histories of those.”

She’s grateful for organizations like RBD that are dedicated to praising this history, but she said she’d like to see more support from the city of Dallas.

“This is something that we should sell as our city that this is something that we need to repair,” Whetstone said. “And it should be in our local history books in our schools.”

RBD president Deborah Hopes said that’s one of the aims of the tours.

“What I found is that they're getting these ‘wow’ moments like, 'wow, I didn't know that,’” she said. “I think that is strengthening the desire to do more and want to know more and to learn more about communities in themselves.”

A woman stands at the front of a tour bus speaking into a microphone

Embracing the past

Remembering Black Dallas required all hands on-deck to be able to execute a project as big as the Ukunika bus tours — starting with the amount of research and networking that went into organizing them.

The organization has volunteers from all over Dallas who were curious to learn more about the history of the land they live on today. They believe it brings a new perspective to what should be researched further and highlighted.

“Everybody can embrace this history because it helps you understand the place that you are calling home,” volunteer tour guide Sharron Conrad said. “By understanding the people and the stories that make up these communities.”

Some, like Larry Offut, are trying to make up for the history they were naïve to. Offut is one of several members of RBD who's white and lived through the civil rights movement. He said the tours are bringing awareness to a past that many people ignored.

“It really was striking to me to read those things and understand that I had lived them as a child and as a young adult,” Offutt said. “…It never occurred to me there was any trauma.”

While RBD has worked to document some of the worst events in Dallas’ past by installing markers around the city memorializing lynching victims, the tours show that there’s much more to the area’s Black history than trauma.

“What I would like others to know is that we didn't only just exist and survive,” the organization’s financial secretary Reginald Small said. “We actually thrived in our communities even with the oppression. We actually thrived, and it's so documented.”

Remembering Black Dallas offers the Ukunika Bus and Walking Tours once a month through August. Some areas they'll hit next are Dealey Plaza, Old City Park and Deep Ellum.

The 9 Most Amazing Bus Tours In The US

Let’s be honest. When visiting a new city, it’s hard to pick out what to see and where to go. I love traveling, but I’ve always wished for an easy map to tell me all of the places I needed to see ahead of time.

That’s how I became interested in bus tours. All major cities have them, and I like how they take you to all the important sites of your destination. The best part? SAFETY! I don’t have to worry about getting mugged, walking around on my own, and the staff is usually very friendly and helpful.

Keeping this in mind, I thought I would share a few of my experiences and create a list of the best bus tours I’ve been on. Check them out and see if you agree with me.

Keep scrolling to see all the incredible experiences!

bus tour

Memphis City Tour

Where: Memphis, TN Cost: $37 Why: I loved exploring all the sights in this incredible city. What initially attracted me was getting to see Elvis’ Graceland, but there are many things I got to explore while on this bus tour. Starting with:

  • A sightseeing tour along the Mississippi River.
  • Saw The Memphis Pyramid, which is now a Bass Pro Shops megastore that includes shopping, restaurants, a bowling alley, and an archery range.
  • We also went to The National Civil Rights Museum located at the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.
  • We even stopped at the Peabody Hotel to see the famous ducks do their march.
  • Sidenote: A Memphis hotel pickup and drop-off was included on our bus tour, and we also had the option to upgrade with a cruise along the Mississippi River on a paddlewheel boat. We didn’t have the time, but if you go, make sure to leave a comment to share your experience!

Big Bus San Francisco

Where: San Francisco, CA Cost: $40.50 Why: We especially loved this bus tour because it was an open-top tour, and it was a beautiful sunny day. It was a double-decker, and it took us to lots of impressive landmarks.

  • We got to explore 49sq miles and stopped at many popular attractions like Pier 39, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Union Square.
  • We also got to visit the Golden Gate Bridge’s Vista Point, which I especially enjoyed. You wouldn’t believe the view unless you were there!
  • An aspect of the tour worth mentioning is that we went at our own pace. We could hop off at any of the 16 stops, explored at our leisure, and then hopped back on when we were ready… traveling with kids, this option really helped.

Big Bus New York

Where: New York, NY Cost: $44.10 Why: The hustle and bustle of the big apple was a bit intimidating. So this bus tour made seeing the sights effortless.

  • This also had a hop-on, hop-off option, so I liked that we got to pick and choose what we wanted to see most.
  • We saw Times Square, Battery Park, Greenwich Village, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, SoHo, and Korea Town. If you happen to go, make sure you save your appetite, the food was A-mazing!
  • Our guide was very knowledgeable about everywhere he took us and had an incredibly friendly attitude (very much the opposite of what I’d heard about New Yorkers).

Grand Canyon West Rim And Hoover Dam

Where: Las Vegas, NV Cost: $99 Why:  This bus tour was perfect for our family because I wanted to see the Grand Canyon, and my husband wanted Hoover Dam. Sidenote: The kids grumbled and mumbled about this vacation, but once at the grand canyon, I had them hooked!

  • They took us to a restaurant first for breakfast, which really helps if you have little ones. Pick-up was at 6:30 Am, so you can imagine we had no time to grab anything on our way out.
  • After breakfast, the first stop was the hoover dam, and may I just say: make sure you have your camera on hand for this one. You won’t believe the view!… My husband might have been right about this one, but don’t tell him that!
  • Next, we headed for the canyon itself, but we got to drive through Joshua Tree first. After which, we stopped at Eagle Point and checked out the views on the Skywalk…..Worth it!
  • Once at the Grand Canyon, we had lunch ( a meal ticket was included), and we checked out the views. Let me just say that whoever tells you the Grand Canyon is overrated should have their head examined!

bus tour

Big Bus Washington DC Open Top

Where: Washington, DC Cost: $44 Why: We would’ve gone anyway to see the sights in our capital, but the fact that this bus tour includes entry to Madame Tussauds puts the cherry on top!

  • You’ve probably noticed a pattern by now, but I’m a big fan of open-top, and the option to hop on and off. It’s very convenient for my family, and I highly recommend touring cities this way.
  • We got to see The White House, U.S. Capitol, Air, and Space Museum, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial, among other things.
  • We also visited Arlington National Cemetery and Pentagon City.

I don’t know if this matters to you, but we also chose our bus tours based on them being stroller accessible because we have kids, and if you do too, you can imagine the need when walking around!

The Chicago Crime and Mob Bus Tour

Where: Chicago, IL Cost: $46 Why: We’ve been to this city before. And while I always had a good time, no matter what we did, my husband and I found this bus tour particularly entertaining.

The primary purpose of the tour is to explore Chicago’s gangster scene.

  • We drove around and saw where Al Capone, The Untouchables, Hymie Weiss, and John Dillinger, among other thugs, hung out.
  • A very knowledgeable guide took us to the Holy Name Cathedral, the Biography Theatre, and we also got to see the bloody St. Valentine’s Day Massacre that happened in 1929 site.
  • If you know the area, the tour took us through the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, Old Town, the Loop, and Magnificent Mile.
  • The guide even had us hop off the explore some sights on foot.

Charleston See-It-All

Where: Charleston, SC Cost: $32 Why: The colonial culture in the south has always fascinated me. So I saw this as the perfect opportunity to visit a new city, but with an added bonus of a guide who knew all the ins and outs of the area.

  • Sights on the bus tour included the Battery, the Citadel, a stroll through the Old City Market, and Hampton Park.
  • We also got the chance to see some dazzling views of Fort Sumter, Castle Pinckney, and the Sullivan Island Lighthouse.
  • Our tour also included free passes to the Charleston Powder Museum.
  • Besides the obvious, what I loved most about the tour was the beautiful houses and gardens. I also saw lots of wrought iron art. And you wouldn’t believe how many old churches this city has!

City Tour of New Orleans

Where: New Orleans, LA Cost: $34 Why: I’ve been to New Orleans before when I was younger. As you can imagine, my friends and I stuck to the French Quarter, which is always amazing to visit. But now that I’m older and with a family, we wanted a different type of cultural experience…And we wanted to see it ALL!

  • The areas we covered were the French Quarter, Treme, the Esplanade, the Garden District, and the Metairie Cemetery.
  • The guide was so wonderful! He explained in such a way that we felt like locals when we left this incredible city!
  • Worth mentioning is that most of the places the bus tour takes you on will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time, especially in the Garden District.
  • Another favorite was visiting the Metairie Cemetery. While cemeteries aren’t usually my happy place. It was interesting to see this specific one, considering I’ve seen it many times in movies and TV shows.

Dallas and Fort Worth Sightseeing Bus Tour

Where: Dallas, TX Cost: $120 Why: This is one of the longest bus tours we’ve taken, but it was well worth it to see two cities in one tour. The guide also shared with us many experiences, only known by locals. And while he took us to many interesting sights, a few I would like to highlight are:

  • The John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza. Which is a monument erected to pay homage to the former United States President.
  • We also got a taste of the south at Billy Bob’s. It’s a huge country music honky-tonk type of place with an indoor rodeo arena, mechanical bulls, and bars.
  • The Livestock Exchange Building. This was once an office for cattle traders. You wouldn’t believe the architecture unless you visited yourself!
  • And speaking of livestock, the guide also took us to Pioneer Plaza. It’s a beautiful park that also includes some livestock frozen in time through the statues.
  • We even saw the city’s first house. It’s called the John Neely Bryan Cabin, and it’s interesting to see it right in the middle of a bustling city!

bus tour

So to conclude, out of all the vacations my family has taken over the years, the most hassle-free, I have to admit, have been our bus tour experiences. Let me know if you’ve been on some of these tours. I would love to hear a different perspective! My only regret? We didn’t get enough pictures!!!

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

If you’re a huge reggaeton fan, you probably know Colombian singer Feid . Feid has always been an avid user of Airbnb and approached them expressing his desire to create an experience for his fans.

This monster-truck tour bus includes Feid’s favorite Columbian snacks, video games and even opportunities to play dress-up with green and orange wigs, sunglasses and fuzzy bucket hats. Everything on this bus is fuzzy and comfy; you won’t want to leave.

Fun fact: Feid’s sister, Manuela Villada, designed his monster-truck tour bus. She picked out all the colors and designed its style to fit her brother’s aesthetic.

You can book your trip starting Friday for one of the following weeks to join him on this adventure and hang out with him along the way. Check out the schedule below for details.

• Week 1: June 6 – June 14 in Philly, Newark, Hartford, and Boston

• Week 2: June 16 – June 22 in NYC, Washington DC, and Greensboro

• Week 3: June 23 – 29 in Duluth and Orlando

• Week 4: July 1 – 6 in multiple locations in Miami

Prepare to immerse yourself in the magical worlds of Disney and Pixar. You can now book Carl’s house from Disney Pixar’s Up on Airbnb . This house from the beloved animated film is located in Abiquiu, New Mexico and it includes 1 bedroom, 2 beds, and 1 bath.

Airbnb focused on every detail of the home from the movie to replicate it in real life. Brain Chesky stated, “This is a real house that we built from scratch. We had to paint every detail of the home to match the exact colors used in the film.” From the moment you step inside, you’ll feel you’re inside Carl and Ellie’s home, with the iconic living room set up, ballon strings under the chimney, Carl’s chair lift at the bottom of the staircase, and more. You’ll be sure to spot all the features and details you’ve seen in the movie as if you were in Carl’s shoes.

“This is not just a house, this is an experience,” Chesky said. Like that in the movie, this house also goes up! “This is a 40,000-pound house with 8,000 balloons attached to it, and it’s suspended 50 feet above the ground,” he said. Hurry up and book, adventure awaits.

Prince’s Purple Rain House

“We handcrafted everything in this house, from the perfume bottles to Prince’s iconic sunglasses, the vanity mirror, and those bedroom eyes on the wall,” Chesky said.

To further enhance guests’ experience, they also worked with Prince’s estate to include his wardrobe and instruments. Guests will also have access to unreleased tracks from Prince’s collection that have never been heard before. “No fan has been able to do this,” he said.

Bus to the Barrick: K-12 Tours

An array of pictures has been taped to a wall, overlapping and partly hiding one another. Some of them are copies of cropped paintings—we see part of a face, a pair of kneeling legs—while others are postcards from Mexico, images of planets, or collages of roughly oval shapes laid over one another.

Bus Tour to ‘Turn Up the Heat’ on Bidenomics, Lawmakers Who Backed Runaway Spending

A mericans for Prosperity, an influential political network founded by the Koch brothers, will launch a six-month bus tour to traverse the country ahead of Election Day to “ call out the train wreck of Bidenomics” and “turn up the heat” on House and Senate lawmakers who have supported President Joe Biden’s spending.

The tour is set to feature more than 500 events across the country, including several “Bidenomics BBQs,” and will begin this weekend in Montana and New Jersey, National Review has exclusively learned.

“At each stop, the tour will counter the White House’s misleading claims on the economy and give voters the chance to share how President Biden’s runaway spending agenda has impacted them,” the group said.

The effort engages Americans for Prosperity’s “unparalleled grassroots network” to underscore the negative consequences of Bidenomics, said Akash Chougule, the group’s vice president of government affairs.

“With 40-year high inflation, higher gas prices and home energy costs, interest rates doubling, and grocery bills that are through the roof, families are feeling the squeeze,” Chougule said in a statement. “When President Biden brags about the economy thriving, Americans can see by their checkbooks it’s simply not true.”

The average household is paying $11,400 more each year to maintain the same quality of life as when Biden took office, according to one recent analysis.

“As the President continues to tout his costly economic agenda, we are crisscrossing the country to hear from Americans and hold lawmakers accountable. We and the millions of voters we represent are committed to stopping the failed policies of Bidenomics and offering a better vision for America’s future,” Chougule added.

The bus tour is part of the group’s eight-figure campaign targeting Bidenomics. Americans for Prosperity  previously launched www.Bidenomics.com to provide a “ real-time resource for fact checks of Biden’s latest misleading rhetoric on the economy.” The campaign also includes digital and mail outreach, door knocking, and phone calls.

In February, the group launched ads targeting 31 House and Senate lawmakers who supported Bidenomics, including incumbent Democratic senators in several key battleground states: Jon Tester of Montana, Jacky Rosen of Nevada, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.

The ads note that 60 percent of American workers say their income has not been enough to keep up with inflation.

“It’s definitely costing more to go about your daily routine,” a narrator says in the ad. “Americans, it’s not working folks. It’s no accident — that’s Bidenomics in action.

HOUSTON (AP) — Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones .

What many believe to be the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday’s 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single “Angry.” They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts , the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

This story has been updated to correct a song title to “Gimme Shelter,” not “Gimmer Shelter.”
