Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

You may have a designated travel sweatshirt or a favorite pair of shoes to wear on flights — but what about other essentials, like pants, jackets, T-shirts, dresses, and pajamas? If you prioritize comfort in transit, it’s time to revamp your travel wardrobe to ensure every trip is a cozy one. Lucky for you, we editors at Travel + Leisure rounded up a few of our favorite comfy clothing items we always wear on the road and in the sky.

From impossibly soft lounge sets to what we believe are the world’s comfiest jeans, we've combed our closets for those few items we tend to wear every time we travel. Our list includes favorites from Lululemon, Patagonia, Lilly Pulitzer, and more, so whether you prefer to travel in loose-fitting loungewear or more compressive clothing, you’re sure to find something you love below.

lululemon Define Jacket Luon

We’ve all been on a flight that’s chilly enough for some extra layers but too warm for a heavy coat or sweatshirt. That’s why we always pack this comfy, light jacket in our carry-on. Not only is it incredibly sleek and stylish thanks to its slim fit, but it’s also super soft, stretchy, breathable, and easy to move in. The sleeves even feature thumbholes and “cuffins” (cuffs that can be folded over your hands) for added warmth. Snag the Define Jacket Luon in eight sizes and five shades including espresso and bone.

“This jacket is essentially my plane uniform — I wear it every single time I fly,” editor Sophie Mendel said. “It's comfy but keeps me looking put-together, plus I can wear it with leggings and sneakers for a super functional, comfortable, and cute transit 'fit. It also has two zippered pockets which are extra-convenient during travel.”

Calia Women's Inspire High Rise 7/8 Legging

Dick's Sporting Goods

Flying in compression leggings is wise, especially for long-haul flights, but some compression leggings tend to squeeze you uncomfortably. That’s never a problem with Calia’s Inspire High Rise 7/8 leggings, though. Boasting subtle compression that molds to your body, the leggings are sure to remain comfy and breathable without sliding down or sagging. They even have unique seam lines that strategically accentuate your curves — though, admittedly,  this is more noticeable in some colors than others. To top it off, we love the way they feel to the touch.

“These Calia leggings are without a doubt the softest pair I own,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “I've worn them for everything from yoga classes to grocery runs to a recent 12-hour travel day, and I've remained comfy through it all. The leggings are thick without hindering mobility, and they're compressive without digging into my stomach (something I can't stand). It also doesn't hurt that they have subtle side pockets large enough for my phone. Though I have plenty of black leggings in my wardrobe, I find myself reaching for these ones again and again.”

Commes Des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor Hidden Heart Low Top Sneakers

It's true: Converse never goes out of style. Conveniently, the sleek sneakers tend to last forever, too, so consider copping a pair of the Converse x Comme des Garçons Play Chuck 70s. They feature the typical silhouette of the brand’s low tops, plus they come in white or black. No matter which color you choose, this particular style also boasts the Comme des Garçons red heart and eyes logo on the side. You can snag these in women’s sizes 5 to 15 and men’s sizes 3 to 13.

“This is my go-to travel shoe because it's comfortable but also dressy enough that I can wear it throughout my trip when I want an elevated sneaker look,” travel editor Susmita Baral said.

Paka Men's Apu Lightweight Puffer

One of our most important tips for traveling in comfort? Dress to avoid freezing or overheating. With this lightweight men’s puffer from Paka, regulating your body temperature is easy. It’s so slim that it looks more like a hoodie than a puffer, but its hidden layers and insulation efficiently lock in warmth. Even if you choose not to wear it in transit, you can effortlessly pack it down into a bag or suitcase.

“This puffer jacket has the warmth of a parka but not the bulkiness, which makes it the perfect outerwear to bring while traveling,” writer Anna Popp said. “It can fit in a suitcase easily and it's also perfectly cozy and warm to wear on an airplane if you need to save extra space. I love that it looks nice while going out in the city on a snowy day, but that it’s also designed to be worn for sportier occasions like skiing, hiking, climbing, or running.”

J.McLaughlin Lowden Jeans

J.McLaughlin

We know, we know — traveling in jeans might as well be a crime. We thought so, too, until we got our hands on J.McLaughlin’s Lowden jeans. The stretchy cotton denim feels more like a soft pair of leggings, and even after long-haul flights, we never felt restricted or uncomfortable in them. The jeans feature a wide-leg slim fit for added mobility and a high waist for comfort and confidence on and off the plane.

“I never thought I would be a jeans person for airplanes but after wearing these on a cross-country flight, I'm a big fan now,” said Popp. “These jeans are super stretchy and roomy, so if (and when) I get bloated while traveling, the high-waist fabric doesn't dig into my stomach or cause me any discomfort. They also look super cute and stylish and can be styled with many different outfits, so I’ve officially added these jeans to my travel wardrobe for every trip.”

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Jacket

We’re adamant that Patagonia’s Nano Puff is the jacket every traveling woman needs in her wardrobe. It’s lightweight, packable, durable, stylish, warm, windproof, water-resistant — need we go on? Some of our favorite extras are a drawstring hemline to seal in heat and hidden internal pockets. On top of all its functional features, it also comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL and 11 colors including buckhorn green, chilled blue, and sandy melon.

“When it comes to packable jackets for women, this one from Patagonia is the best option for virtually any trip,” Popp said. “The design is simple but very functional, and I love being able to wear it for any season. In the winter, it's thin enough to layer for more warmth, but I can wear it as-is during summer camping trips. My outdoor-adventuring family all own Nano puff jackets and they still look as good as new, so I love that they’re built to last – possibly forever – in my opinion.”

Rag & Bone Miramar Jogger

Rag & Bone

These joggers are so stylish, you’d never guess they’re also comfy as can be. Don’t let their denim appearance fool you — they’re actually made of soft cotton terry that provides stellar mobility and comfort. Over the legging look for travel? Throw these on instead, and pair them with a pair of boots or walking shoes and moto jacket for an effortlessly cool look you don’t even have to change out of once you reach your destination.

“These Rag & Bone joggers are simply the best for travel,” editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford said. “I call them ‘faux’ jeans; the fabric looks like it’s a regular old pair of denim, but surprise — they have the softness and ease of a pair of sweats. Ideal for a plane ride or even a long day out on a tour, these are the ultimate pants that blend function, form, and style.”

Forme Power Bra

In need of a comfy new sports bra to keep everything in place on your next journey? Our editors (and a certain blonde popstar) are all about the Forme Power Bra. It’s comfy, cute, compressive, and most impressively, designed to zap bad posture. The wide straps take pressure off your shoulders and back, while the comfortable fit promotes proper body alignment, quick recovery, and overall health. We even love all seven colors it comes in — especially rosé and ecru.

"As a bra-needer and someone who really shouldn't be traveling without one, I absolutely hate wearing something bulky while I fly,” associate photo editor Alessandra Amodio said. “My go-to is the Forme Power Bra. Not only is it incredibly comfortable and made of high-quality material, but it’s actually FDA-registered to correct posture and improve your body alignment. Now I fly comfortably and my neck, shoulders and back feel so much better. I just throw on a cute open button down, pair it with the Ergo Shorts or Sculpt+ Leggings , and look chic and put-together while traveling. (This is also what Taylor Swift wore in her Eras Tour rehearsals according to a photo from her Time Person of the Year profile — if it's good enough for Taylor, it's good enough for me.)”

Circus by Sam Edelman Zuri Strap Ballet Flat

Circus by Sam Edelman

We love that ballet flats are back — and this strappy style demands to be worn. The low heel and soft interior make them a great, pain-free option for travel while cross straps, buckles, and tiny beaded bows keep things stylish. They come in 11 sizes including half sizes, and 15 unique colors and prints. We recommend the shades dark French macaroon, light wash, and the leopard-printed beige brown.

“Even though you’d think flats would always be a comfortable shoe option, it’s actually surprisingly difficult to find flats that don’t dig into your feet or make your toes all sweaty,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “I’ve tried so many pairs that seem comfortable at first, but end up being too rigid and irritating by the end of the day. This is the first pair I’ve found that is soft enough to wear all day long, either with or without socks or tights. They feel like slippers, and they come in more than a dozen colors to match any vibe.”

Black Diamond Notion Pants

Black Diamond

Whether you’re headed to the airport, the trails, or even the gym, the Black Diamond men’s Notion Pants are your best bet for comfort and mobility. Designed with an elastic waist, a drawstring cord, and a loose fit, these pants feel almost like wearing your favorite pair of sweatpants. However, their slim appearance complete with two hand pockets and two rear pockets make them dapper enough to wear to dinner, a show, or even the office. Grab them in a neutral hue like ash or tundra, or opt for a more eye-catching shade like raging sea or burnt Sienna.

“You don't have to be an Alex Honnold–level rock climber to love these super-soft pants,” news director Paul Brady said. “They're comfortable enough for long-haul flights, even in coach, but they've still got a crisp silhouette to keep you looking put-together.”

Lilly Pulitzer Seaview Top & Deri Palazzo Pant Linen Set

Lilly Pulitzer

You can’t go wrong with Lilly Pulitzer, especially when it comes to jetsetting. This breathable, lightweight linen set from the brand is just as soft and cozy as it is cute, so we recommend adding it to your travel wardrobe immediately. The classic, collared button-down is super versatile thanks to cuffable sleeves and a tieable bottom — plus you can turn it into a jacket or cover-up by layering it unbuttoned over literally any other outfit. Snag the ultra-flattering matching pants to complete the look.

“I think the most versatile item to pack on a warm-weather vacay is a white linen button down, and this roomy one from Lilly Pulitzer is good enough to also grab in other colors like spearmint and mulberry,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “I’ve worn it unbuttoned over a swimsuit and then slipped on matching palazzo pants — with an irresistible elasticized waist — for dinner alfresco. I personally love the all-white combo for warmer climates but the New Yorker in me would also recommend grabbing the coordinating onyx x onyx set if you can catch it in stock.”

Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant

There are few things softer than Spanx Air Essentials’ Wide Leg Pants. They feel similar to the brand's sleek and smoothing leggings and shapewear, but they have a relaxed fit rather than a super compressive one. While the pants could certainly be worn as loungewear, they’re also fashionable enough to wear to the airport, a coffee shop, or on an errand run. Though they fit and even look a bit like sweatpants, figure-enhancing contouring on the rear differentiates them from your typical comfy clothing.

“It’s impossible to find a better material than Spanx AirEssentials ,” Parker said. “All pieces feel silky to the touch, hefty enough for a chilly plane cabin, and pretty much impossible to wrinkle. I’m super into wide-leg styles — and need this exact petite option for my 5' 3" frame — and these pants are pretty much a given on my long flights nowadays. Personally, I love the olive-y palm color as an alternative to black or navy, so my only real choice is whether to match them with a crew neck or a sleek half zip instead.”

Pitusa Pima Abaya

If your ideal wardrobe staple is a do-it-all piece, look no further than Pitusa’s Pima Abaya. The cozy caftan is perfect for everything from international flights to pool days to bedtime. That’s thanks to impossibly soft cotton construction, oversized sleeves, and an airy, relaxed fit. There are no buttons, snaps, or drawstrings on this piece, so you’ll never have to worry about uncomfortable digging or fussing with it in order for it to fit right. You can customize your fit upon buying, though, and you can even choose from 15 colors.

“I joke about my ideal wardrobe consisting of a caftan in every color and this floor-length maxi fits perfectly into that vibe,” Parker said. “It can serve as a dress, cover-up, nightgown — pretty much anything, all day, every day in a tropical climate. The lightweight pima cotton is incredibly soft, too, and it comes in petite, standard, and tall options to reduce tailoring needs. I like this exact one because it’s not so sheer that I wouldn’t wear it out to dinner or on the plane but if you’re looking for more of a peekaboo style, you can get the same cut in a burnout fabric instead.”

Mar Soreli Ginger Mary Jane

Mar Soreli

Looking to travel in comfort without sacrificing style? Check out the Ginger Mary Janes by Mar Soreli. Everything from the insole to the strap is ultra-soft and cushioned, plus the buckle and strap are easy to tighten and loosen for a custom fit — or for quickly taking on and off at TSA. They’re even soft to the touch thanks to velvet uppers, and they’re versatile enough to wear with leggings, skirts, dresses, and jeans.

“If you’re someone who wishes slippers were appropriate outdoor shoes, these ballet flats are the next best thing,” Parker said. “The velvet is so cozy but still looks great with anything from plane leggings to a nicer skirt on a night out, with or without socks or tights. And, if you do want to wear them through security (and don’t have TSA PreCheck®), each strap actually has a snap in addition to the buckle adjustment so they’re incredibly quick to slip on and off as needed.”

Allbirds Wool Runners

Allbirds shoes were basically made for travel, and the Men’s Wool Runners are some of our absolute favorites. The inside is actually lined with fine merino wool, making for soft and warm-yet-breathable wear no matter the time of the year. On top of that, the sneakers are equipped with reliable arch support and machine washable fabric. While we wouldn’t recommend them for running, they’re the perfect comfy shoes for pretty much everything else, including walking, hiking, and navigating the airport.

“My husband swears by these comfortable men's walking shoes so much that I ordered a pair of the women's version for myself,” senior editor Kayla Becker said. “And they really deliver. We both love the thick, foamy cushion that keeps our feet supported on long travel days, and they've stood up to everything from 20,000-step jaunts in Iceland to hiking Diamond Head in Hawaii.”

Aday Turn It Up Pants

Tapered trousers are office staples — so if you’re traveling for business, we suggest adding a pair or two of the Aday Turn It Up Pants to your wardrobe. They’re the goes-with-everything piece you’ve been looking for, and their soft, tailored stretch paired with an elastic waistband makes them comfy enough to catch a flight in. The ankle-length pants have a pocket at each hip and are available in a dozen colors.

“As soon as I found these sleek, wrinkle-free travel pants, they became a permanent part of my travel uniform (and I've even written about how all the travel editors I know have them ),” Becker said. “They're not only super comfortable for long-haul flights (I just flew 14 hours in them and felt like I was wearing pajamas), but they also look put-together right off the plane, whether I'm headed to the office or a walking tour. I'd wear them literally anywhere.”

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to workout on the road, Saucony’s Endorphin Speed 4 is the versatile sneaker for you. Not only is it an ideal comfy running shoe, but it’s also lightweight and sleek enough to wear for every other part of your journey, too. Whether you wear it on the plane or to sightsee once you arrive at your destination, you’ll always feel supported in the Speed 4. Choose from five eye-catching colorways and 15 sizes including half-sizes.

“I've been training for the London Marathon, and since I started wearing these sneakers, I haven't had a single ounce of pain in my feet, even on long runs,” senior editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “They are extremely cushioned yet so lightweight. Even after the race is done, I imagine I might be wearing them on the long flight home to LA.”

Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie

Fundamental Coast

To make the most of the space in your suitcase, you’ll want to prioritize versatile pieces that can do it all. That’s why we love the Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie so much. It’s perfect for travel days and morning walks near your hotel, but it’s also elevated enough to wear to a cafe, museum, or shops around town. The pullover hoodie has a front pocket, drawstring hood, and slim fit for a more put-together appearance. Grab it in phantom black or storm, which both have a beachy, heathered texture.

“Fundamental Coast has perfected Southern California athleisure, especially for men, and my fiancé lives in the brand's hoodies, shorts, vests, and polos,” Ruggiero said. “The Shorebreak hoodie is especially soft and sleek and works well whether we're out doing something active or going to brunch at a new spot in our beachy LA neighborhood.”

Vuori Cove Funnel Neck Tank

Vuori

This high-necked tank top is so stylish, you’d never guess it’s also comfy enough for exercise, stretching out on a plane, or even napping. Crafted with a soft and stretchy rayon-elastane fabric blend, this top never digs into the skin or feels uncomfortably tight around the neck. While it’s not quite cropped, it’s not too long, either, so it’s likely to complement a variety of bodies and ensembles.

“This super-soft rib knit tank is my go-to running top, but the high neck also gives it some style (in addition to protecting my most sensitive areas from the sun),” Ruggiero said. “I have it in multiple colors, and I've definitely worn the black and tan ones out with friends at night, too.”

Vuori Echo Insulated Vest

Vuori

A reliable vest is essential for travelers — it locks in warmth without causing you to overheat, and it couldn’t be easier to zip on and off. We’re big fans of this one from Vuori for its insulation, water resistance, and easy cleaning. It has zip pockets for your hands or small items, and a subtle collar keeps heat from escaping while allowing your neck total range of motion, irritation-free. To top it off, the vest comes in two stylish shades.

“This lightweight but warm insulated vest has quickly become one of my fiancé's favorite items of clothing,” Ruggiero said. “He wears it on dog walks, weekends, and travel days — it even has pockets.”

Reef Men's Swellsole Cutback Sneaker

It’s no secret that Reef is one of the most trusted rugged shoe brands around, so when it released boat shoes, we were intrigued. It turns out Reef’s boat shoes are just as comfy and long-lasting as the sandals we know and love. The men’s Swellsole Cutback Sneakers are the perfect fusion of classic boat shoes and cushioned sneakers, and they’re perfect for beachy vacations. Wear them from the dock straight to dinner — then keep them on for a busy night of exploring the boardwalk.

“I always thought of Reef for flip-flops, but since my fiancé found their hybrid boat shoes/sneakers, he's bought them in at least three colors,” Ruggiero said. “They're supportive thanks to memory foam, and can be dressed up or down.”

Public Rec All Day Pants

Odds are, you’ve seen these popular pants everywhere from the office to the coffee shop to the airport. That’s because their straight-leg fit and stretchy nylon-spandex fabric move with you rather than tightly confining your waist and legs like other styles. But don’t let their uber-soft texture fool you — these pants are still equipped with two front pockets, two faux back pockets, belt loops, and a zipper fly, so you’ll look and feel just as sophisticated as you are comfortable when you wear these.

“The slacks feel almost like loungewear thanks to their soft nylon-spandex blend,” editor Taylor Fox said. “They're the perfect balance of comfort and style for long flights where you don't want to feel cramped into tight pants, but want to still look put-together when you land. They can also be dressed up or dressed down for added versatility no matter what you have on the agenda.”

ManMade Boxers and T-shirt Bundle

ManMade Brand

One can never have too many basics, and we love this three-piece pack from ManMade. Each set comes with two pairs of black boxer briefs and one white T-shirt. Made of high-quality modal, spandex, and Pima cotton, the briefs and tee are guaranteed to remain soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and anti-chafing through everything — even long-haul flights and airport sprints. To ensure your comfort, the bundle comes in six sizes ranging from small to 3XL.

“My husband packs about a dozen pairs of boxers and undershirts for a weeklong trip and his absolute favorites come from ManMade,” Fox said. “They're lightweight and breathable with a buttery soft material that doesn't add a bulky layer under clothing. All of their items contain the perfect amount of stretch as well without allowing the clothing to ride up or bunch in uncomfortable places whether he's hiking, riding his bike, or preparing for a long flight.”

The Mate Organic Waffle Knit Joggers

There’s something so luxurious about a good waffle weave. Designed with a relaxed fit and buttery soft texture, these Organic Waffle Knit Joggers by Mate are no exception. They’re made of 100 percent organic cotton, crafted with elastic at the waist and ankles, and equipped with one pocket on the back right side. The cozy joggers come in four neutral colors (jet black, bone, lilac, and bark) and five sizes. You can also drop the matching Organic Waffle Long Sleeve Shirt in your cart to complete the look.

“If I could replace all of my joggers with these comfortable, waffle-knit pants I would,” writer Ali Domrongchai said. “They have the perfect amount of stretch that lends itself well to long travel days, and thanks to its textured design, they not only feel good, but look good, too. In fact, since I've been wearing these cozy knit joggers, a few of my friends have snagged a pair as well because of how much I rave about them.”

Tips for Buying Comfortable Travel Clothes

Consider the material.

When traveling, it’s important to choose clothing that’s as comfortable and low-maintenance as possible. That said, we recommend clothes made of soft, sweat-wicking, and breathable fabrics such as cotton, polyester, linen, or wool. It’s also wise to opt for wrinkle-resistant materials like nylon and spandex to keep you looking fresh and put-together.

Look for travel features

Though it may feel unnecessary, we guarantee you’ll end up thanking yourself for buying pants, dresses, and bags with lots of extra pockets. Additionally, temperature-regulating clothes can come in pretty handy when you’re on the road — so consider adding clothing with cooling capabilities (or just clothes made of linen, nylon, or polyester) to your travel wardrobe.

The most breathable clothing is made of materials like cotton, linen, nylon, polyester, merino wool, and silk. Though fabrics like spandex, fleece, and denim have plenty of benefits, they’re not quite as breathable.

Generally soft, stretchy, and loose-fitting clothing is best for travel, as it’ll keep you comfy and won’t feel restrictive on long flights or drives. Some people may also opt for compressive clothing, like leggings or compression socks, which helps promote circulation on long travel days. You may also want to choose clothing you know to be breathable so you don’t overheat.

Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

travel outfits

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

PRAYRNA SINHA

This post gave me a more clear idea of what I will wear when travelling and I especially loved the part where you mentioned the all black and all white monochromatic looks .

' src=

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

' src=

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

How to Dress Comfortably for Business Class Flights

Table of contents.

Travel Fashion Girl help! A reader asks:

My husband is an executive with an airline company. While that means we fly positive space, first class, it also means that we’re always representing the brand. I’m stumped as to what to wear that’s comfy but not TOO casual on an upcoming 15 hour flight. Yoga pants, leggings, sweats – that’s all out. Any suggestions?

When you plan what to wear for a flight , you might try to choose a comfortable yet polished outfit. But when you’re flying business or first class, many people expect or want to dress more professionally. Luckily, you don’t have to choose between “comfortable” and “professional.”

Here, our readers share their tips for the most comfortable business class airplane outfits.

The Spanx Perfect pants are some of our favorite travel pants because they’re so versatile and you can dress them up or down. Our readers agree, with one saying, “I broke down and spent the money for the Spanx pants that TFG recommended. Then I wore them on a trip and bought two more pair. They’re the perfect blend of comfort for the plane and style when you get off.”

Pair these black Athleta pants with a dressy white tee shirt and a blazer for a professional yet comfortable airplane outfit.

Maxi Dress or Skirt and Scarf

If you’re traveling in the summer or don’t want to wear pants, several readers recommended a maxi dress. One reader says, “I would go with a nice simple black maxi dress, cardigan, and pashmina,” while another adds, “I love traveling in a maxi skirt, cute top, and cardigan, along with a scarf.”

Black is always our go-to option for any business look, but you could also opt for a navy. Alternatively, pair a black maxi dress with a bright cardigan or scarf for a colorful pop.

Here are eight different ways to wear a scarf when you travel!

Swing Dress and Duster Cardigan

For the ultimate versatile outfit, some readers love pairing a dress with leggings. You can remove the leggings if it warms up, so you have two outfits in one.

A reader shares, “my go-to airplane outfit is a swing dress over leggings with a long duster cardigan. It’s also one of my favorite work outfits because it’s professional yet comfy enough to sleep in.”

We love the simplicity of this dress that you can easily take from the airport to a dinner date. Layer over our favorite Zella leggings and a duster cardigan.

Take a look at these cardigan outfit ideas for your next trip!

Scarf | Blouse | Leggings | Boots | Suitcase | Watch | Moisturizer

Tunic with Leggings and Pashmina

What is classier than a tunic with leggings? As one reader says, “never say ‘no’ to a tunic over nice leggings with a pashmina.” For fall and winter, opt for a sweater tunic, and for spring and summer, go for a lighter weight tunic in a linen or cotton fabric.

We love pairing a white tunic with black leggings. Layer with a grey or tan pashmina for a classic look, or spice it up with a colorful shawl.

Here’s what our readers voted for the best leggings for women that travel!

Lipstick | Belt | Tee | Tag | Pants | Suitcase | Sunglasses | Boots

Wide Leg Pants with a Slim Tee

Wide leg pants started as a trend but they seem to be here to stay, especially in the professional world. As one reader says, “wide leg pants are always comfortable and look elegant.”

They make for a great look when balanced with a slim tee (go for black to dress it up). If you go for a cropped pair of wide leg pants, pair with them ankle booties with a slight heel. You’ll look trendy yet still business professional.

Our readers voted for the best black travel pants and these were their favorite styles!

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Many Americans are familiar with business trips, having taken nearly 250 million of them in 2021 alone. 1 If your job has you hustling and bustling around the country (or around the world), you probably know a thing or two about weaving through the airport while balancing your wallet, phone, and a cortado.

But if you need a few more fashion tips on how to pack business travel outfits into a carry-on suitcase, you’ve moving-walkway shuffled to the right place. The good news is that when you choose the right pieces, you can get at least six outfits out of one carry-on bag.

We’ll guide you through a few essential pieces to keep in your hanging closet. Then, we’ll show you six different looks using simple, versatile items that work just as well in the boardroom as they do in the window seat.

Defining Business Casual for Travel

The term “business casual” can feel quite broad, even without the “travel” modifier. Businesspeople of the past wore suits—period. But nowadays, outfit choices are almost unlimited, making it harder to decide what to pack for a business trip.

Plus, when packing for a business trip, a woman is often faced with more options than their male working counterparts, between dress shoes, jewelry, and accessories.

So, what is business casual for women ? Insider defines business casual attire as clothing that is professional, but relaxed. 2 “Relaxed” is an especially important word when traveling, because less access to your extended wardrobe means you’ll spend more time in the travel clothes you packed.

Overall, business casual travel outfits should be comfortable enough to wear all day, but polished enough to make your best professional impression.

Tips for Packing Work Travel Outfits

Not sure where to start with work travel outfits that impress and go the distance? Before flinging clothes from your closet off the hangers and all over your bed, we’ve got a few fashion tips for you.

To help organize your packing strategy, consider these 3 priorities:

  • Luggage space – If you’re limited to one carry-on, your packing space is valuable. To solve this problem, the key word is versatility. Pack items that can be worn multiple times, for multiple occasions, as part of different outfits. This becomes easier if you choose plenty of neutral tones.
  • The itinerary – Is there a party scheduled after the main conference? Are you meeting clients for dinner at an upscale steakhouse? Put together your one “special occasion” outfit and pack it once you have every part of it planned out to save time later on.
  • The weather forecast – If your destination is warm, you’re in luck. No packing bulky winter coats! But if your work takes you to Chicago in December or Oslo in January, you’ll need more luggage space for warmer items like your cute winter coat —or plan to wear them on the plane.

Essential Items for Business Casual Travel Outfits

Let’s get specific about exactly which clothing items you’ll need on your trip. For starters, you’ll probably want at least two or three office looks, and since you likely won’t be spending every second of your trip in the office, you’ll also need a few options for after-hours events and traveling.

Two Basic Tops

In two different colors (black and white work beautifully). For warmer locales, a simple tank like our Scoop Tank or Roll-sleeve Tie Top goes with everything and can be worn under jackets or cardigans. For sweater weather, try something with more coverage, like our Long Sleeve Turtleneck.

One Dressier Blouse

If there are any parties or after-work dinners on the agenda, be sure to pack something with a little extra flare. One option is a silky top like our Drape Cami or Tie-Front Blouse . A dressy blouse on the modest side can double as an office look under a blazer.

Two Versatile Pairs of Pants

The holy grail of business trip slacks is comfy and wrinkle-resistant, yet tailored and high-quality enough to wear in the office. Like your basic tops, you’ll likely want two color variations. We love our black Travel Pant and off-white Piper Pant.

A Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts pull triple duty: formal, casual, and anywhere in between. Find one comfy enough to travel in, and you’ll get even more wear out of it. Black is ideal, but gray, camel, navy, or anything else that matches what’s in your suitcase. For an easy-to-wear piece that can survive a plane ride, we recommend our Travel Pencil Skirt.

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Two Blazers

A staple of businesswear, you’ll need at least one or two blazers in your bag. Curious about how to style blazers ? A Houndstooth Blazer is classic, chic, and goes with both black and nude tones. For colder destinations, our Tweed Blazer doubles as an overcoat to keep you warm.

Soft, warm, and easy to transport, cardigans are an essential and versatile piece for traveling. They’re ideal for carrying in your backpack when you plan to explore the city during your time away from conferences or meetings. Our charcoal Shawl Cardigan is cozy enough to dine or sleep in (should you be taking a red-eye flight).

A Wrap Dress

The wrap dress practically defines versatility. Universally flattering, this basic can be dressed up or down for whatever occasion arises. It’s like the secret weapon of minimalist packing, and it’s even comfortable to wear. We’ll use our Cascade Wrap Dress for our list.

Simple Accessories

Your choice of accessories will depend on where you’re headed, but again, keep simplicity in mind so you can mix and match freely.

Consider options like:

  • Two pairs of earrings: one minimal, one statement
  • Two necklaces: one short, one long
  • A tote bag for carrying your phone and business cards
  • Two pairs of shoes: more casual flats and your most comfortable heels

Find a style that suits you and your travel attire in our collection .

6 Work Travel Outfits

Now that you have the essentials in mind, let’s talk about how to use them. Here are six business travel outfits that utilize those essentials to their fullest travel potential.

#1 Airport Chic

Our first travel outfit maximizes function without losing form. To create cute outfits for the airport , pair comfy, wrinkle-resistant bottoms like our stretch-knit Travel Pant with a basic top and cozy cardigan. Throw on a necklace to bring along a piece of jewelry without having to pack it. You’ll be flying in style.

Shop The Look:

  • Travel Pant
  • Scoop Tank or Long Sleeve Turtleneck
  • Shawl Cardigan
  • Beaded Long Mother of Pearl Necklace

#2 First Impressions

Our first work outfit couldn’t be simpler. A pencil skirt with one of your basic tops paired with a blazer makes a look that impresses without going overboard. Our recommended accessories? Kitten heel pumps and our Two Drop Mother of Pearl Earrings .

Shop The Look:

  • Trave l Pencil Skirt
  • Two Drop Mother of Pearl Earrings

#3 After Office Hours

For a formal dinner, holiday party, or any nighttime event, you can jazz up your simple outfits with a little bit of shine. Swap your basic top for the dressier one. Layer it under a blazer for more formal affairs. Balance out the shimmer of your top half with a simple black pencil skirt or pant, plus your favorite jewelry.

  • Sequin Duster
  • Travel Pant or Travel Pencil Skirt
  • Kenyan Iconoclast Hoop Earrings

#4 Charm & Handshakes

For our second work look, pair the off-white Piper Pant with a basic top and the Herringbone Coat. Too warm for a long coat? Swap it out with your second blazer. If your event allows, give your feet a break by wearing your flats.

  • Herringbone Coat or Blazer
  • Gemstone Teardrop Necklace

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

#5 Leisure Time

Whether it’s a work brunch or a sightseeing break, you’ll need at least one off-duty outfit for the daytime, too. For this look, pair your trusty Piper Pant with a nice top like the Drape Cami. For colder days, add the Herringbone Coat and a scarf. For sunny weather, try our Cascade Wrap Dress.

  • Herringbone Coat
  • Cascade Wrap Dress

#6 Smooth Transitions

Here’s a look you can wear straight from the office to the after-party. Throw on your wrap dress and kitten heels. During the workday, go for more minimal jewelry, and after hours you can up your glam with larger hoops and bangle bracelets. If you get cold, grab your Herringbone Coat and strut everywhere.

  • Large Hoop Earrings

I Flew First Class From Rome to NYC—6 Outfit Mistakes I Avoided to Look Polished

business-class-travel-outfits-310796-1700928992749-main

Last month, when I pulled up to Rome's Fiumicino airport, it wasn't in an outfit I'd normally wear to board a 10-hour flight. In fact, you'd probably guess I was heading to the office or a lunch meeting if it weren't for the  roller suitcase I had in tow. But when I had the opportunity to travel in business class for a work trip I was taking to Europe, I jumped at the opportunity to update my typical  travel uniform for one that would help me dress the part of a frequent business-class flyer.

I wore the trousers that I wear to the office most days, the ballet flats I'd worn out to dinner the night before, and the designer handbag that's usually already packed deep in my luggage. In other words, it was a far cry from the athleisure staples I usually opt for. But without sacrificing comfort, I made a few key tweaks that looked far more put-together but ultimately still felt just as relaxed as if I were wearing sweats. It should go without saying, but I'm by no means telling you what you should do or wear when traveling. Instead, I'm simply filling you in on the styling choices I personally made to look and feel my best.

Here, I'm sharing the six outfit swaps I made for an ultra-polished airport ensemble . So no matter what your seating assignment is like, read on for my business class travel outfit tips that will have you looking your best for the next time you head to the airport.

Avoided Wearing: Leggings as Pants

Wore instead: relaxed jeans and trousers.

First things first, I knew I had to ditch my leggings. Don't get me wrong, I still wear them on most short domestic flights, but in order to dress the part for business class, they were the first things I skipped. Instead, I wore a pair of ultra-relaxed trousers that were so roomy they were equally are as comfortable as any leggings or sweatpants. On my outbound flight, I wore a pair of relaxed jeans that were a tad more casual than the trousers but still helped me feel pulled together.

Shop trousers and relaxed jeans:

Gap + SoftSuit Trousers

Avoided Wearing: Athletic Sneakers

Wore instead: ballet flats and loafers.

A pair of cool flats like ballet flats or loafers is a solid option instead of sneakers, and what's more is that they're easier to slip on and off to get through security and during the flight when you want to get even comfier.

Shop flats:

Jeffrey Campbell + Dancerina Ballet Flat

Avoided Wearing: Only a Big Tote Bag

Wore instead: also a handbag.

For most business and first class tickets, you're allowed more carry-on bags than you are for economy. So instead of stuffing all my essentials into one personal item, I kept wearing my Bottega Veneta Andiamo Bag as a small personal item, but also carried a tote for my laptop plus my roller suitcase. Carrying a third bag that only held small items like my phone and passport felt like such a luxury of convenience since I usually find myself digging through a large tote when I get to security, but ultimately I thought the addition of a chic bag helped my outfit look more polished and considered. I even noticed that I wasn't the only woman who did so. Others boarding in business class also carried their smaller luxury handbags in addition to any larger totes.

Shop handbags:

Bottega Veneta + Small Andiamo Intrecciato Leather Top-Handle Bag

Avoided Wearing: Oversize Sweatshirts

Wore instead: elevated sweater.

Hoodies and sweatshirts are fine and all, but a cashmere or wool-blend sweater is usually just as comfortable but for me, it made a world of difference in my overall look. I wore the  Francis Sweater by Éterne and now it's a fixture in ever suitcase I pack.

Shop sweaters:

Éterne + Francis Sweater

Avoided: Skipping Jewelry

Wore instead: everyday jewelry.

Jewelry is the last thing I put on in the morning, so when I'm heading to the airport (and more than likely in a rush), I usually forget to put any on. I made a point of wearing all my everyday jewelry staples for this flight including a tennis necklace, small hoop earrings, and thin stacking rings (while also skipping anything too chunky or uncomfortable). I think it helped add a finishing touch to pull things together.

Shop jewelry:

Baublebar + Pear Cut Stone Tennis Necklace

Avoided: Puffer Jacket

Wore instead: trench coat or tailored coat.

Layers are key for any transcontinental flight, so I opted for a trench coat as a light layer atop my sweater. Now that it's getting to be winter, though, I'd wear a tailored wool coat for something thicker to lend some structure to my overall silhouette.

Shop outerwear:

Lioness + Trencherous Coat

These Business Travel Essentials Will Help You Pack for Your Next Work Trip

While we’d all love to be heading on vacation with every flight, at least 12 percent of those flying pre-pandemic were corporate travelers. In fact, in 2019, business travelers took 464 million domestic business trips in the United States. Now, business travel is slowly but surely picking back up.

As corporate travel often requires stepping off the plane and into a meeting , your plane outfit will likely look different than it does during leisure travel. You’ll want to pack versatile clothes that easily transition from day to night, comfortable yet dressy shoes, and sleek luggage. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the business travel essentials below that will take you from the jet bridge to the boardroom without sacrificing form over function.

Essentials for work trip outfits

travel business outfit

Aday gives the classic white button-up a contemporary twist with its mandarin collar. Buttoned up, worn as an outer layer, or tucked in, the shirt is a versatile addition to the brand’s capsule wardrobe collection and your business wardrobe. The shirt is made of Aday's ‘Technical Silk’, a blend of nylon and elastane that dries quickly and resists wrinkling. Even better, it's made with UPF 50—you can never have too much sun protection . The cherry on top? The material is created in a renewable energy-powered mill.

travel business outfit

Another Aday classic is the lightweight Turn It Around Pant. With claims from the company that the material is piling resistant up to 100,000 rough touches, you can expect to wear this pant again and again. The stretch fabric is thermoregulating and made in Italy. Slip these on with a pair of sneakers for your commute, then throw on heels as you head into the office. No one will be the wiser.

travel business outfit

M.M. LaFleur’s Lagarde shirt has all the components of other travel-friendly business clothes: it’s lightweight, machine washable, and wrinkle resistant. It has also been treated with an anti-odor finish, meaning smells don’t absorb into the material as easily. That means more wear and less laundry. Details like the gold-colored buttons and slightly textured fabric add an elevated sense of luxury to the shirt.

A good culotte pant can give the illusion of limitless power, and the extra pleat on the sides of the Zhou offer an added swoosh. The high-waisted pants are wrinkle-resistant and loose enough for you to cross your legs on the floor of the airport but elevated enough to make a statement in the office. The fabric is wrinkle-resistant and made from wood pulp.

Suiting up? Suits are notoriously stiff, but the xSuit was created to be comfortable even in transit. With a wrinkle-resistant stretch fabric that gives you back your range of motion, this suit is a one of our business travel essentials. It’s also machine washable and stain resistant, ideal for trips where you plan to do laundry or need to walk off the plane business ready.

Button-up shirts are surprisingly versatile, going from day to night with the loosening of a collar. The Aero Zero Shirt has a relaxed fit, is machine washable, and dries quickly. Like any good travel shirt, the material of the Aero Zero Shirt is wrinkle-resistant and offers lightweight comfortability without losing its quality. It’s also made of 100 percent recycled fabric. The shirt’s moisture-wicking technology will keep you dry and cool on warmer days, too.

While the Kinetic Tapered Pant looks like a dress pant, don’t be fooled. Between the stretch and moisture-wicking components of the warp-knit Japanese polyester, these pants are meant to be lived in. They’re comfortable enough to wear all day while maintaining an edge with the tapered fit. The addition of the hidden drawcord gives you a sleek, belt-free look (a time-saver when going through TSA). Even better, they are machine washable and wrinkle resistant.

This pair of pants lives up to its name, bringing to life the dream of wearing sweatpants to work. The structured design of the fabric gives it a professional feel, while the elastic waist and double-knit fabric promise to keep you comfortable on your next red-eye. Naturally, the material is also wrinkle-resistant.

Business casual shoes

A classic white sneaker is a staple in any wardrobe, and these minimalistic leather Koio sneakers promise to accompany you wherever you need to go. Handmade from LWG Gold-certified Italian leather and fitted with an OrthoLite Hybrid insole, the chic sneakers require little to no break-in time. These shoes do run slightly large, so size down when you order.

Naturalizer is a favorite shoe brand among flight attendants for a reason. These shoes offer comfort that can last through long shifts and longer airport terminal walks. The Felicia slingback is no exception, with a timeless style that can sharpen any outfit. The heel of these pumps is low enough for novice heel-wearers, and the ankle strap keeps the shoe secure across all kinds of pavement. Additional cushioning in the insole ensures your feet will stay comfortable over hours of wear.

Pashion shoes were created as a product that could be worn from night to day, commute to happy hour. The shoes have a patented design that converts heels to flats with a few easy twists. These multi-purpose pumps are especially helpful for small carry-on bags , allowing you to essentially bring two pairs of shoes while only needing space for one. One thing to note if you’re planning on wearing them as flats, most Pashion shoes need to be broken in a bit before they lay all the way flat.

These aren’t your typical dress shoes, most of which pinch your toes without offering any support. With a foam that forms around your foot to deliver tailored support, they’re comfortable enough to withstand a long walk between terminals. The laser-perforated sheepskin lining increases airflow (which in return reduces sweaty feet). The shoes are made with A-grade hides from American steer, and the outsole is made from a durable blend of athletic and hiking material. You may not want to hit the trails with these, but they can go everywhere else.

Handcrafted in Italy, these sleek Del Toro loafers promise you won’t have to sacrifice form over function. The beautiful shoe’s detailing includes red stitching at the back and an understated criss-cross on the front of the Napa leather exterior. The rubber sole gives the shoe additional grip, and the style is easy to slip on and off while going through airport security. They do run larger than your average loafer, so order a half size lower than you would normally.

Carry-on bags

travel business outfit

If you're going to have to run through the airport to catch a flight, do it with the Away Daily Carry-On which has 360° roller wheels. It's compact enough to be considered a carry-on item on most airlines (though it’s always good to double-check dimensions before you head to the airport), and the exterior pocket offers easy access for a 13” laptop, and a removable three-compartment accordion can keep any documents organized in transit. This carry-on is lightweight and portable, making it as useful on a daily commute as on business trips. Add a personal touch with a monogram stamp on the included luggage tag (just $10).

travel business outfit

The small but mighty Monos Carry On Pro is perfect for short business trips that don’t require a checked bag. The suitcase fits inside most overhead bins, and the TSA-approved lock ensures your zippers will stay in place. With an additional front compartment that fits a 15” laptop, you can slide in and out of TSA quickly (though you'll move even faster with TSA Pre-Check ). The suitcase is made of lightweight but durable polycarbonate and includes antimicrobial laundry bags and a compression system to help you make the most of the space inside. It comes in eight colors, plulimited edition hues.

The Carry All Weekender Plus is a versatile bag that fits plenty with its 50L capacity, including a padded pocket big enough for a 16” laptop. It offers travel-friendly designs such as a clamshell opening and a magnetic-closure external pocket for passports and boarding passes. The pass-through band also makes it easy to keep everything together by sliding your All Weekender Plus onto a roller bag.

What to Look for in Travel Business Attire for Women Over 50

Choosing travel business attire involves a thoughtful blend of comfort, style, and practicality. Here are some key aspects to consider when curating a wardrobe for your journeys:

Comfort Is Key

Prioritize fabrics that offer comfort and ease of movement, especially during long flights or extended periods of travel. Look for breathable materials like cotton, jersey, or blends that keep you comfortable throughout your journey.

Versatility Matters

Opt for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different looks. This ensures you’re prepared for various business engagements without packing an excessive number of items. A well-coordinated capsule wardrobe can be both stylish and efficient.

Read THE CAPSULE WARDROBE – A MUST HAVE EVERY WOMAN SHOULD BE UTILIZING .

Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics

Choose fabrics that resist wrinkles, such as wrinkle-resistant blends, or fabrics like jersey and knits. This helps you maintain a polished appearance, even after spending hours on a plane or attending meetings.

Classic Silhouettes

Invest in classic silhouettes that stand the test of time. Tailored blazers, well-fitted trousers, and timeless dresses contribute to a sophisticated look that transcends fashion trends.

Neutral Colors and Prints

Stick to a neutral color palette for your core pieces, as they are easy to mix and match. Incorporate subtle prints for added interest without being too overpowering. This ensures a polished and professional appearance.

Layering Options

Pack layering pieces such as cardigans or scarves to adapt to different climates. This not only adds a stylish touch to your outfit but also provides practical solutions for temperature changes.

Comfortable Footwear

Prioritize comfortable shoes suitable for both walking and professional settings. A pair of stylish yet comfortable flats or low heels is an essential addition to your travel wardrobe.

Functional Accessories

Invest in functional accessories like a durable yet stylish travel bag, which should be spacious enough for essentials and possibly a laptop. A versatile scarf or statement jewelry can boost your look without taking up much space.

Adaptability for Day-to-Night

Choose pieces that can easily transition from day to night. This adaptability ensures you’re ready for business meetings during the day and social events in the evening without the need for a complete wardrobe change.

Personal Style Expression

While adhering to professional standards, don’t forget to inject elements of your personal style into your attire. Whether it’s a signature accessory or a favorite color, let your individuality shine through.

Remember, the key is to strike a balance between professionalism and personal comfort, creating a travel business wardrobe that reflects both your expertise and your unique style.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: A Women’s Guide to Traveling in Style

So you’ve got an upcoming work trip and the time has come to start planning for your travels.

For some, hitting the road is a career must. Conferences are your love language and you always find new favorite spots every palace you go to.

For others, it’s a hassle. After all, on top of prepping projects or presentations, you now have the additional baggage of travel.

If you’re staring at your closet, unsure of what to pack for a business trip, welcome. You’ve come to the right place.

Press pause on stuffing every possible outfit you might need into your suitcase. Instead, sit down with our one-and-done women’s guide for stress-free work travel. From how to pack your bag to what should make the cut in the first place, we’ve thought of everything.

How to Pack for a Business Trip: Tips for Business Women

Before we get into what to pack for a business trip, let’s tackle how to pack for a business trip.

At Next Level Wardrobe , we encourage our clients to approach clothing with intentionality, and to value quality over quantity. Use these as your two guide posts as you prepare for your trip.

What does this mean in practice?

It means that every item you take with you should be there for a specific purpose. Have a realistic idea of what your trip requires instead of over-stuffing your bags with “just-in-case” items. Remember, you’re going on a business trip, not on a spontaneous adventure.

Approach your travels with a clear, concise plan and you’ll actually be more prepared and you’ll feel more put-together.

Our top tip for women wondering how to pack for a business trip is to start with the perfect luggage.

Choosing the Best Luggage for Your Business Trip

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TUMI (@tumitravel)

Although every trip and traveler is different, the need for a high-quality piece of luggage stays the same. First, you want a bag that’s sturdy to avoid any mid-travel misshapes or shopping for a replacement too soon.

Next, you want a bag that’s the right size for your travel needs.

In our experience, selecting a carry-on suitcase and either a backpack or a duffle bag is enough for most trips. (We’ll break this down with our packing list and how to pack your bag later on.)

An added bonus of this luggage duo? If you’re traveling by plane, you’ve got everything you need at your fingertips. No worrying about lost bags or racing against the clock at baggage claim.

When picking out what to pack for a business trip, we recommend checking out Tumi . They’ve got all things bags, backpacks, and suitcases. They’ve got a wide range of sizes, makes, and models from compact carry-ons to spacious weekenders for all occasions. You can also count on their complementary baggage trace system in case of loss or theft.

Last but not least, their warranty has you covered. The first year includes just about any type of damage to the suitcase (even from TSA or airline workers). Years 2 through 5 cover you for manufacturer defects or normal wear and tear.

Now that you’ve got your bags, let’s get to packing them.

How to Pack Clothes for a Business Trip

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NY + LA Personal Stylist (@nextlevelwardrobe)

With your perfect luggage in hand, let’s make the most of the space inside it. Recently, our NLW founder Cassandra Sethi went on a 6-week trip with just a carry-on and personal item. She was able to create 50 outfits with only 24 clothing items (including shoes).

Stuck on how to pack for a business trip in terms of clothes? Here are our tips for women on getting everything inside your bag:

1. Pack pants by folding them in half and laying them flat. We recommend placing these at the bottom of your bag so you can easily fit other items on top

2. Roll your tops over the pants. This is best for casual or knit-woven tops that won’t wrinkle too easily. Button-downs or other blouses and dresses are best folded on top of the pants. You can always steam these items once you arrive at your destination.

3. Fold sweaters flat and pack them over the rolled tops, leaving space for your shoes.

4. Pack your shoes inside a shoe bag. Some retailers sell dedicated shoe travel bags for this, but an old drawstring bag will do just fine as well.

5. If you’re traveling with a suit or gown, do not roll it. Either fold it neatly along with your pants or keep them in a garment bag.

When discussing what to pack for a business trip with clients or on our Instagram, we often get asked about packing cubes. Is it worth buying them or other supposed “space-savers”?

We vote no.

When you learn to lean out your wardrobe and you have the right bag, you don’t need anything else.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Set Your Suitcase up for Success

Before we get into our packing list, we have to address the elephant in the room: your closet.

If you don’t have the right pieces in your closet, you won’t have the right pieces in your suitcase either.

Perhaps you’ve got a closet full of too many pieces that don’t go together or don’t fit your current body. Maybe you’ve got a wardrobe of impulse buys that you wore once and ended up regretting.

Chances are, you won’t feel excited or confident about bringing these pieces on your business trip. This leads to overcompensating by overpacking just to try to string one outfit together.

To avoid these feelings in the first place, we recommend a closet clean-out . At NLW, we use a proprietary style system on all of our clients to help them feel confident, gain unlimited outfit options and love their purchases.

Once you’ve invested in the right pieces, colors, and fit, you’re ready to take on any business trip in style.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Our Essential Women’s Business Travel Packing List

Screenshot Of An Instagram Story Advising To Focus On Core Colors When Packing For A Business Trip

In our opinion, you don’t need a completely new outfit for every single day of your trip. The most efficient way to approach what to pack for a business trip is to stick to core colors.

Core colors are black, grey, navy, and white. These neutral shades are versatile enough to endlessly mix and match with each other. For example, with 4 pants, one in each core color, and two tops, you can create 8 different outfits.

Core Colors Triangle with three sections for colors of a closet

You can always add a piece or two in a tonal color (shades of core colors) or an accent color. However, those items should be the minority of what’s in your suitcase.

Here are our clothing recommendations on what to pack for a business trip, item by item:

Tops  – Blouses/dress tops – Casual/t-shirt tops

Bottoms – Denim – Non-Denim options like trousers, slacks, skirts

Dress (If you wear them.)

Layering Pieces (Depending on the climate.) – Sweaters – Blazer – Coat/Jacket

Shoes (Depending on the length of your trip, the MAX amount you should bring is 3.) – Dressy sneakers – Flats – Heels

What to Pack for a Business Trip: FAQs

If you’ve got lingering questions about what to pack on a business trip, keep scrolling for our travel FAQs.

I always overpack, how can I stop doing this?

This all starts with how you approach shopping and building your wardrobe at large. If you have versatile, well-fitting, essential pieces in your wardrobe, you won’t feel the need to over-pack.

Declutter your closet of unnecessary items, and stick to pieces you’ll wear again and again and easily mix and match.

Then, when it’s time for your trip, consult your itinerary and map out exactly what you’ll need for each day. Don’t give into bringing pieces on the off-chance that you’ll unexpectedly need them.

I mean, you’re not bringing every single item from your work desk to your business trip, right? Apply the same thinking to your clothing.

How do you pack for different climates?

Two words: Light layers.

Start off with one essential piece you’ll need for each climate.

Here’s an example. Starting your trip in arid Phoenix, Arizona? Grab a classic tank top in a core color. Next stop: always foggy San Francisco? Block out the bay breeze with a cashmere cardigan. Heading to Toronto in the wintertime? Pack a timeless black or grey coat.

Pair these items back to business-ready trousers or pants and you’re ready for anything.

Is there a set number of clothes you should bring on a business trip?

No. It all depends on the length of your trip, your itinerary, and even the industry you’re in. The packing list above will give you a good baseline to start at. Customize it to fit your needs.

What about non-work clothes for when you’re off the clock on your trip?

No trip is all business all the time. It’s okay to bring a couple of non-workwear items IF (say it with us) you know you’ll wear and need them .

For example, if you’ve scheduled yourself to hit a nearby nature trail on a free morning, go ahead and pack one workout look.

In fact, if you’ve followed all the above steps, you should have room in your suitcase for necessary off-the-clock pieces.

A New Women’s Line of Business Travel Clothes

a collage of a woman

Shopping for business professional clothes is difficult enough – throw on top of that shopping for business professional outfits that can withstand weeks of travel. Having wrinkle-free clothes means you don’t need to spend your first night at the hotel ironing everything for the week, and having plenty of hidden pockets means you can keep items like your ID or money safe and secure while on the road.

Bluffworks is a company that designs clothes for travel. This means clothes that are machine washable and wrinkle resistant, meaning I don’t need to take a chunk out of my day to visit a dry cleaner on the weekend. Bluffworks isn’t just designing professional clothes, but they are innovating to make our lives more convenient when we have a heavy travel schedule.

Business Travel Clothes for Women

Bluffworks just released their line of women’s clothes for travel this past fall, and I was really excited to try out some of these new pieces. In collaboration with Bluffworks, I was sent four items from their women’s line to test out: a t-shirt, a blouse, a dress, and a pair of pants. I wore these outfits last week while traveling for work, and you can see all of my thoughts on each piece below.

All of the photos shown below are after one week of wear, and straight out of the dryer. I ran all 4 pieces through the washing machine and did not iron them, so you can see how well they turn out right after being washed. For reference in these photos, I am 5’7 and typically wear a size XS in tops and size 1 in pants.

Threshold Performance T-Shirt in Mist Grey (Size XS)

a woman in a grey shirt

Recently, I have been traveling west coast to east coast on Monday through Thursday for work. On my travel day, I paired my Threshold Performance T-Shirt with a pair of jeans and sneakers. This short sleeve v-neck shirt is fitted without being too tight, and is so soft. If I ordered another shirt I would consider sizing up for a looser look.

This t-shirt is pretty casual so I wouldn’t wear this shirt to a client, but it’s perfect for travel days or site seeing with coworkers when you’re off the clock. Especially since it is odor resistant, this travel top is great for longer days. Paired with a blazer, it could make a great happy hour outfit as well.

Trevi Dress in Evening Navy (Size 0)

a woman in a blue dress

I was initially cautious about bringing this dress for work, because I do have a harder time finding dresses that are long enough to be professional. I was pleasantly surprised at the fit of the Trevi dress ! It hits me just above the knee. Paired with a blazer or a cardigan, you can definitely dress this outfit up to be business casual.

Every woman loves a dress with pockets, and this dress has 6. Honestly, it’s kind of overwhelming. Pockets in your pockets, and even a pocket right under your arm. I don’t like the bulk, so for me pockets are for a place to hide your hands when you don’t know what to do with them. Though, the pockets are definitely handy if you decide to go site seeing with the dress and need to hide your passport or money. But on a typical business travel day, the pockets are more for bragging than for use.

Azores Blouse in Pale Rose (Size XS)

a woman standing on one leg in a street

Who doesn’t need more button ups? One of the biggest pains about traveling for work is having to iron your clothes, and you can see here the Azores Blouse right out of the dryer.  Not bad! The most interesting features of this blouse include the extra fabric to cover the buttons, and an extra clasp over your chest to make sure your bra doesn’t show through. I’m wearing a nude bra here, and the shirt is not at all see through as well. This shirt is plenty long; I would not wear it to a client un-tucked.

What surprised me about this shirt were the sleeves. There’s no buttons, but the sleeves are elastic to stay in place. It makes the shirt difficult to roll up neatly; you can see how I just pushed them up here. Pushing the sleeves up is easy with the elastic, but doesn’t look quite as professional. Either way, this is a great versatile shirt that can be an addition to your business professional wardrobe.

Trevi Ankle Pant in Pitch Black (Size 2)

a woman standing on a street

I’ll start by saying that I am pretty picky when it comes to pants. For my professional pants, as seen in photos with my Azores Blouse above, my style typically gravitates towards skinny pants in a size Tall for extra length. I honestly had pretty low expectations for the Trevi Ankle Pant … so I was really surprised how much I like them!

These pants make me look so fashionable! The Trevi Ankle Pant is high waisted and, like the Trevi Dress, has pockets on pockets. The back pockets are real, and there’s even credit card pockets in the waistband. I’m obsessed because I can stick my whole hand in the front pockets while my analyst walks me through his latest report.

Recently I have been fluctuating between size 0-3 for pants, and because I don’t want my professional pants to be too tight, I decided to size up to the 2. However, if I were to get another pair I’d probably go with the 0.

Women’s Business Travel Clothing

Overall, I am really excited for the Bluffworks women’s line. I try to rotate my outfits out each week, but my Trevi Ankle Pants are packed in my carry-on for week 2. The pieces are great for my job as a consultant, and I admire the research that Bluffworks has put into determining what makes clothes better for travel. I look forward to seeing what new clothes come out!

At the time of this post, the entire Bluffworks women’s line is 20%! Check their site for more colors and options.

What Is Business Casual? A Guide to Dressing for the Office

A s workplaces have evolved, so too has office attire. Hybrid schedules and remote work have spurred an era of casual dressing. Yet the informal shift doesn't equate to an open invitation to wear just any old thing in your closet. And while the easygoing vibe is a nice new normal, it challenges us to redefine what is business casual in this current workspace environment.

"As the name indicates, it's a more relaxed version of formal business wear," says fashion advisor Alison Lumbatis, CEO of Outfit Formulas, an online personal-styling program. But those open boundaries mean that if we're not careful, we can accidentally go too far. The question is, how can we be comfortable and stylish while maintaining the requisite professional appearance?

This isn't solely about clothing either; it's also a matter of etiquette . Business etiquette , digital etiquette , work-socializing etiquette—all pose the challenge of sending the right message gracefully through the various fashion-behavior landscapes. "The old rule used to be, if you wore it to play, you shouldn't wear it to work," says Kat Griffin, founder and editor-in-chief of Corporette, who advises on how to dress for work and still look stylish. "But these days, a lot of clothing items that used to be included in this unspoken list, like sleeveless tops, jeans [and] sandals, can now be worn to many offices without seeming disrespectful."

Part of success lies in understanding your office's specific culture, the same way you need to learn the email etiquette , texting etiquette and Zoom etiquette rules , which can take some time and observation. Keep in mind that some offices have seemingly strange etiquette rules that take a moment to catch on to. With that in mind, Lumbatis and Griffin are here to offer general guidelines for an office environment that's not too formal yet doesn't entirely say anything-goes. They're offering up advice on all the pieces you need and what not to wear under any circumstances, and they're answering your pressing questions about today's office dress code.

What is business casual, exactly?

Today, business casual should strike a balance between comfort, style and professionalism. It's a delicate equilibrium that combines the traditional elements of business attire with the relaxed nature of casualwear. "I'd say one top rule is, clothing should fit properly," says Griffin. "Too-tight pants or pants that are falling down aren't going to be appropriate for any office."

Additionally, while there is a higher degree of flexibility these days, and thankfully, there are many etiquette rules that changed in the past decade , there are still some very iffy outfit choices. Griffin suggests you skip anything that shows "unexpected skin." This includes clothing with cutout details, midriff-baring tops, shorts or skirts that expose the upper thigh and excessive cleavage—and these rules go for both genders.

Determining what is business casual is about more than selecting office-appropriate clothing items. It's also a matter of deciding what constitutes your self-representation. Sort out how to say yes to the pieces you feel really showcase who you want to be at the office (and how to say no to those that don't).

"Really think about how you want to present yourself," says Griffin. "If you're creating a personal brand that should match what you want people to expect from your work, consider things like reliability, attention to detail, cleanliness and neatness, not 'super cute.'" Your outfit is not just a combination of clothing items but a nonverbal communication of your work ethic, competence and professionalism.

Examples of business casual for men

Yesterday's obligatory daily suits are being replaced by a more personalized approach. But everyone makes mistakes while shopping for a work wardrobe. Thankfully, the fashion experts are here to guide you. The goal, they say, is to still project a professional image but with an individual style. This doesn't mean all formal elements are discarded. Instead, they're simply blended with casual pieces to create a refined yet relaxed look.

So what is business casual for men? The items below fit the bill.

The rise of athleisure has given clean, simple sneakers a place in the office. Opt for a minimalistic white pair and make sure to keep them immaculate. With casual suits or slacks, they put a modern twist on traditional office wear.

A pair of classic straight-fit jeans in a dark or medium wash can work well in a business-casual environment. The key is to ensure they're in good condition—no fraying, rips or holes—and reach your ankles. Pair them with a button-down shirt for a smart, laid-back look.

Button-down shirts

Either tucked into dress pants or left untucked with jeans, these are classic-cool. The top two to three buttons can be left open if you're not wearing a tie.

In certain offices, solid-color, well-fitted T-shirts are acceptable, especially when layered under a jacket. Just skip the graphics and elements like sports team logos. Your outfit can still be a conversation starter —but for the right reasons.

Khaki pants and chinos are versatile, and when worn properly, they can work for the office without looking like weekend wear. Pair them with short- or long-sleeved button-downs to keep the look polished.

Dress pants, particularly in a modern fit, are a safe and adaptable option. You can easily adjust the formality with your pick of shirt and shoes. For a more easygoing look, pair with a crisp solid T-shirt and clean sneakers ; for something a bit more pro, go with a collar and loafers or leather shoes.

Blazers and casual jackets are a great addition for a hit of cool sophistication. A sport coat, for instance, can effortlessly upgrade a basic pair of jeans. Choose a fit that's comfortable (nothing too tight) and works with your body type. For instance, if you're short, avoid long jackets.

Examples of business casual for women

Thankfully, there's a shift toward self-expression through fashion at work, eliminating the clone-like feeling of wearing corporate duds that every other woman is also wearing—totally vanilla skirt suits are out, for one. These items will keep you comfortable throughout your day while helping you look professional, sophisticated and stylish.

What is business casual for women? The following items all qualify.

Dark wash always comes across as sophisticated and chic, and to elevate the look even more, go for a trouser-style or wide-leg cut. The key is to ensure they're in prime condition, so avoid rips or excessive distressing. Jeans go great with feminine tops or solid T-shirts and structured blazers.

Pairing clean, simple sneakers with dresses and dress pants is a super stylish, modern look. Just avoid athletic sneakers and stick to anything solid or two-tone.

These will be your daily saviors. A comfortable pair of flats goes with pretty much anything, and you have options: Pick a neutral shade or a vibrant hue, or go bolder with a print. The same goes for low heels.

When choosing sandals , go for styles that provide substantial foot coverage, maintaining the line between too-casual and professional.

Dresses offer an excellent, fuss-free, one-and-done outfit. Sheath, A-line and midi styles offer the most versatility—they can be dressed up with a blazer or toned down with a cardigan or denim jacket , depending on your office environment.

Ankle length or in a traditional trouser cut, slacks are absolute staples and totally worth the investment of stocking up on multiple colors. Try on a variety of styles and go for what you feel most comfortable (and most confident) in.

Knee-length to midi skirts are as flexible as dress pants for the office. A pencil skirt works wonders with a printed blouse and neutral flat or heel for a reliable look for pretty much any situation.

Fitted button-down dress shirts will go with pretty much anything: pants, skirts, jeans, you name it. This is where you can bring out your personality, so take advantage. Depending on your personal style, you might go with prints, bold colors, neutrals, lace embellishments or details like tie-necks, ruffles or puffed sleeves.

These are a business-casual "yes"—but with caveats. Your tees need to be clean, structured (meaning they hold their shape and aren't worn out) and solid or patterned, not blazed with graphic images. Adding a good T-shirt is a great way to tone down the dressiness of a suit.

As for athleisure tees, save those for exercise. And mind proper gym etiquette when you do wear them.

Blazers, moto jackets and cardigans add personality and polish to any outfit, and they're go-to layering pieces. Don't shy away from patterned or brightly colored options; they'll make your look pop more. Remember, business casual means dressing respectfully—it doesn't mean blending into the background.

Business casual don'ts

Despite the relaxed rules, when it comes down to what is considered business casual, there are certain items that remain strictly off-limits at work. We're all prone to etiquette mistakes , but these fashion flubs are easy to fix. Our experts say skip these to make sure your look is professional and your rep stays intact.

  • Stretched-out T-shirts: These look sloppy, giving the impression that you don't care about your personal appearance.
  • Torn or distressed jeans: While jeans have made their way into the business casual realm, overly distressed or torn versions come across as too casual.
  • Athletic shoes: Unless your office is extremely casual, avoid them. Super-sporty sneakers make it look like you're ready to hit the gym rather than the office.
  • Flip-flops: These are way too relaxed. Plus, no one wants to see that much of your feet.
  • Spaghetti straps: These reveal too much skin for the workplace, and this goes for both men and women.
  • Gym or yoga gear: Sports bras , leggings , shorts, sweats , workout tees, joggers —it doesn't matter how cute or matching they may be. Save them for after work.
  • Graphic or slogan tees: These can be distracting and potentially offensive. Avoid any clothing that could become a talking point for the wrong reasons. You don't need to spend your time issuing apologies for your insulting outfits.
  • Overly tight or baggy clothes: Both extremes come off as unprofessional. Clothing should fit well and flatter your shape without being too revealing or sloppy.
  • Overly loud clothing and shoes: Things like faux-leather pants, slide sandals and clogs with wooden soles are all best avoided. These items can be seen as distracting, annoying or not fitting for a professional environment.
  • Heavy perfume: If people can smell you from more than a foot away, consider toning down the amount of perfume you use. And yes, when a co-worker breaks this social rule, you have every right to complain nicely .
  • Anything with wear and tear: Clothes with stains, holes, missing buttons, tons of pilling or a layer of pet hair signal a lack of attention to detail and can detract from your overall professional image.

Still stumped by how to create a work-appropriate wardrobe or wondering, What is business casual attire supposed to look like in certain situations? The pros are answering some of your most commonly asked questions.

How do I look more formal if I work in a conservative setting?

If your office is conservative but not formal enough to require you to wear a two-piece suit daily, then a button-down shirt and tie with dress shoes is a safe outfit for men. For women, pants or a skirt with a button-down shirt or blouse and neutral flats can be your staples.

I have a very creative job. Just how casual can I get?

"Be sure to ask during the hiring process, and use your co-workers' attire for clues," says Lumbatis. "You want to catch on to any essential social etiquette secrets . In creative careers, it's fun to show your personality through interesting cuts; bright, bold colors; patterns and styles that are a little outside the box."

What's a great go-to outfit for a job interview?

"You can never go wrong with a formal professional two-piece suit [for women, either a pant or skirt suit], white or light blue button-down and dress shoes or sleek flats with minimal accessories," says Lumbatis. Feeling like you're wearing a smart outfit that isn't off-brand will keep your brain focused when figuring out what to say in an interview .

Should I dress up more when I have a meeting with my boss?

It doesn't hurt! "Looking more polished does help you show up as the best version of yourself and gives your confidence a boost, especially if you have a presentation or an important meeting," says Lumbatis.

What's an easy way to look more pulled together when I have an important meeting or presentation?

"I always advise people to have a blazer in the office so they can grab it for more formal events. For women, if you want to scale up even more, you can throw on pointy-toed flats or low heels, if you wear them," says Griffin.

Feeling great in your outfit translates to a stronger performance because not only are you confident, but you're also not distracted by worrying whether you look the part you want to play in the company. And in these situations, you need to focus. We all know it's not easy to find the perfect thing to say , so anything that helps is worth pursuing.

Should I dress differently if I'm going for a promotion?

"Absolutely! You've heard the saying to dress for the part you want, not the part you have," says Lumbatis. "Plus, research proves that how we dress has an effect on how we feel and show up in the world. Looking sharp helps you stay strong when deciding how to ask for a raise , for instance, or a promotion. Take in how your higher-ups dress, and use that as a cue."

If I can't quite read the office yet, how creative and casual can I dare to go?

"You want co-workers, bosses and clients to think about your work first. It's OK to express yourself and show your personality, but remember that what you wear reflects immediately on how people perceive you as a professional," Griffin points out. Give yourself three weeks of wearing more conservative clothing while observing, then make adjustments that feel more freeing and comfortable.

Do the rules for what is business casual loosen in the summer?

"Yes and no," says Griffin. "I think unexpected skin is still not OK, even when it's hot out." That said, this is a time when thinner or flowier fabrics are acceptable, pants that end above the ankle to mid-calf are cool, and you can lose the jacket.

What Is Business Casual? A Guide to Dressing for the Office

Stylists and designers share 7 items that will always be business casual and 6 that absolutely aren't

  • Business Insider asked professional stylists and designers to share what "business casual" means.
  • Trousers and sweaters are work-wardrobe essentials that are always appropriate for the office.
  • On the other hand, flip-flops and baseball caps aren't right for a professional setting.

Insider Today

Most people live much farther from their offices than they did before 2020. But that doesn't mean you won't come across the sometimes dreaded, often ambiguous "business casual" dress code again.

Business Insider asked two stylists and three designers to share which clothing pieces are always considered business casual and which never will be to help demystify the term.

Here's what they said.

Trousers are a wardrobe must.

travel business outfit

Trousers — for any gender — are always appropriate for work, according to Monica Diaz, personal stylist and owner of Monica Diaz Mode .

"These can be in wool for winter and cotton in warmer weather," she told BI.

Polo shirts offer comfort and professionalism.

travel business outfit

A polo is clean-cut and nice without being overcomplicated, according to Melony Huber, founder and design director of La Peony .

"A polo can take you straight from the meeting room to the networking event or out to dinner or golf," the designer told BI.

She said it's a versatile top that should be on everyone's list when packing for a business-casual work event.

Chino pants strike a balance between formal and casual.

travel business outfit

Chino pants are a great midway point between casual and formal, according to Patrick Kenger, personal and celebrity stylist and image consultant at Pivot .

Diaz also touted the simple pants and said they should fit well (not too oversized) and be neutral in color (black, blue, brown, or tan).

Tailored dresses are an easy and appropriate option.

travel business outfit

According to Kenger, tailored dresses are widely considered to be an appropriate choice for business-casual environments.

"It's a good idea to opt for styles that are not too tight or revealing, and perhaps consider pairing it with a blazer or cardigan for some added warmth and polish," he told BI.

Loafers are great for a business-casual look.

travel business outfit

Footwear can seem especially challenging when it comes to putting together a business-casual look, but Kenger said loafers are a fairly safe bet.

Opt for leather or suede options in neutral colors.

A blazer can instantly elevate your ensemble.

travel business outfit

A well-fitted blazer adds a touch of class to any business-casual outfit, according to Kenger.

"Tailoring is a good move here, as is investing in a piece with a neutral color like navy, black, or charcoal gray for maximum wearability," the designer told BI.

Sweaters are always a safe bet.

travel business outfit

Sweaters have been a go-to for decades of professionals, according to Huber. Plus, they're comfortable and layer nicely.

"I would recommend a fitted sweater that is not too baggy or oversized — otherwise, it makes it feel a little too casual, like loungewear," the designer told BI.

On the other hand, flip-flops are never the right shoe choice.

travel business outfit

Casual sandals , like flip flops or slides, are never considered business casual, according to Jamie Lewin, fashion designer and founder of Vetted .

Consider more formal footwear options such as loafers or ballet flats , which can provide similar comfort levels without sacrificing style.

Graphic T-shirts can be distracting and inappropriate.

travel business outfit

According to Britt Barkwell, designer and cofounder of T. LINE , graphic or slogan T-shirts are often considered distracting.

"You never want your clothing choices to start a conversation," she told BI.

Instead, Lewin recommended pairing a plain round or V-neck T-shirt with a blazer if you're after comfort.

Save your distressed denim for the weekend.

travel business outfit

Oversized or distressed denim shouldn't be worn to work, according to Barkwell. Instead, reach for a more appropriate fit and wash.

Huber recommended classic dark-wash denim without any embellishments.

Ball caps and snapbacks are not appropriate for work.

travel business outfit

Avoid wearing baseball caps when you're in an office environment .

"A business environment, even business casual, is the time to ditch the hats," Huber told BI.

Athleisure and workout clothes should stay in the gym.

travel business outfit

According to Lewin, athleisure should never be worn to the office — save the workout-appropriate clothing for the gym or running errands.

Huber recommended finding a comfortable pair of slacks or dark jeans and replacing a sports-bra tank top with a camisole for layering.

Crop tops don't make the cut.

travel business outfit

Crop tops may be trendy, but they're too casual for a professional setting.

Instead, Kenger recommended a tailored sleeveless blouse or a lightweight shell tank under a blazer.

Of course, you will need a good, heavy coat, hat, gloves, scarf, etc. Also would be good if you have some shoes/boots with soles which work well on ice. Sidewalks can be slippery. I wouldn't worry too much about rain gear. Any precipitation from now until April will likely be snow.

Don't bring a lot of cash. ATM's are everywhere and every hotel has at least one, and they are as safe here as they are anywhere else.

Enjoy the Bolshoi. Their performances are stunning.

Of course, if there is something that you simply must have, and it has to be your favorite brand, flavor, etc, then you might bring it along, because although you can generally find anything you need here, it might be a different brand or type, from those that you are accustomed to. One major item in that category would be over-the-counter (or prescription, for that matter) remedies. Of course, you can buy pain relievers, allergy medicines, sleep aids, etc, here, but you won't find any American brands, and who really knows what you're getting, even if you can figure out what it is supposed to do for you? That's the one thing that we usually stock up on when we're in the States.

Take a pack of thin white Tee shirts. That way you will not be forced to wash the long sleeve or heavier clothing after every wear. This will allow you to take less clothes, and the Tee shirts can be left behind if you like.

Make sure you bring a power adaptor. They use different plugs over there. That's one of those things that almost everyone forgets about. Also, if you are not being picked up at the airport, you might want to order a cab, otherwise airport taxi drivers will try to charge you $200 for a 30 minute drive. A good place for travel tips - http://travelallrussia.com/travel-tips/

I think you can also order a cab from this website. Have a good trip to mother Russia

Thanks all, especially Spyderwood for your sound advice. I especially appreciate the advice to layer as i will be indeed going in and outdoors and tend to run hot so layering will indeed be key for me.

Thanks again.

what should be a better outer wear -- a leather jacket or a peacoat or a think down jacket ?

Oh we are going with a tour group.. will be on river cruise in both cities..

travel business outfit

there can be brilliant sunshine, there can be absolute downpoors. Nothing is certain in September. July to mid-August is generally best to have consistent dry and sunny weather, but often unpleasantly so.

I've been tehre in September and one day I was in t-shirt with a pleasant 24°C. The next day it was 8°C with an icy wind and rain. There is no certainty.

Check up your weather report before you leave, but be prepared for all sorts of conditions (although you won't see snow ;-)

travel business outfit

Thanks for the input. I will pack warm and waterproof jacket for my parents and inlaws. thanks.. praying for stable fine weather...

it looks to be quite rainy unfortunately for the remainder of the week. But that won't spoil my holiday ;-)
