Our commitment

At Autopia Tours, we actively promote the protection of flora and fauna on our Melbourne to Adelaide Tours. It is our duty to ensure there is minimal disturbance to this World  Heritage Listed region and the species that call it home. Cultural sensitivity and respect for traditional owners should also be shown at all times.

Part of our responsibility is educating guests on minimal impact practices and the importance of ensuring the safety of wildlife and the environmental sustainability of the destinations we visit.

Learn more about EcoTourism: https://www.ecotourism.org.au/

Traditional Owners

Autopia Tours would like to begin by paying our respects to the traditional owners of this country, with specific acknowledgement to the Wurundjeri people. Please be conscious and respectful of the sensitivities of indigenous culture and the spiritual connection they have with the land at all times.

Wildlife Encounters

The natural behaviours of wildlife are to be respected and not interfered with. When viewing wildlife, people should take care to avoid rapid or sudden movements, which could frighten the animal, and should keep noise to a minimum and refrain from touching, petting or feeding all wildlife including birds. Contact with people can introduce diseases to wildlife and can cause them to become aggressive.

Wildlife should not be handled or fed, unless by certified wildlife handlers. Feeding wildlife can alter their natural foraging behaviour and can lead to disease or illness through contact with people and the introduction of foods that are harmful to their digestive system. Feeding wildlife can also cause them to become aggressive toward people.

Wildlife that appears to be in distress, injured or in danger should be reported immediately to the appropriate authority, such as your Guide/Tour Leader, a National Park Ranger or Visitor Centre Staff.

Protecting our National Parks

People should remain on designated walking tracks, behind safety barriers/fences and follow all directions given by the guide/tour leader. Venturing off these can alter fragile ecosystems and can harm wildlife shelters and native vegetation. There are other dangers to be aware of too, such as cliff edges, unstable rock formations, overhanging tree branches and slippery ground cover. Remaining on tracks ensures safe visitation for guests and the environment.

No flora or fauna should be removed from their natural setting. This includes dead wood, fallen leaves, flowers and so forth, as they form part of the ecosystem of the region and their removal could cause a disturbance.

Waste Management

All buses are fitted with waste bins. No organic waste should be disposed of onto the ground. Although organic, items such as banana peels, apple cores, bread and other food scraps, are not natural/native to the region and can introduce pest species, diseases or harm to wildlife if found and eaten. We recommend all passengers bring a water bottle with you on our Grampians Tour. Purchasing bottled water contributes large amounts of plastic into the landfill. Therefore, we ask guests to bring their own bottle, as there is access to water refill stations available on our vehicles. Please ensure you stay hydrated throughout the tour to reduce the risk of sun exposure and dehydration.

All our guides carry a current Level 2 First Aid certificate. Please report any accident or illness to your tour guide. We recommend anyone with an existing medical condition to carry their medication with them on tour and to notify their tour guide at the beginning of the tour.

If you are a smoker! We ask you to refrain from smoking whilst in the company of other passengers and limit it to designated smoking areas. Smoking is not permitted on any of our vehicles, or in any type of accommodation including permanent campsites. We make frequent ‘comfort stops’ to allow free time for guests but cannot guaranteed smoke breaks. Please ensure you dispose of your cigarette butt responsibly and appropriately.

Know before you book

What is a suitable age for this tour?

Child policy for this tour is 6 years old and over, due to the nature of this tour, it’s not suitable for infants or children 5 years and under. Children aged between 6 to 17 years old are required to stay in standard private accommodation and must be accompanied by a legal guardian or adult.

How fit do I need to be for this tour?

A minimum moderate level of fitness is required to complete the walks. Walks can be up to 3km in length, often over steep and rocky sections and in direct sunlight. Walks will be at the guide’s discretion to ensure the safety of guests. Therefore a medium/high level of fitness is required and a doctor’s certificate is required for people over 70 years (30 days prior to travel).

Do you cater to special dietary requirements?

Yes, please notify us if you have any dietary requirements or medical conditions at the time of booking, or at least a few days prior to departure, that way we can make any necessary arrangements.

What type of food do we eat on tour?

Most of the meals are prepared by our tour guides with basic camping-style food options and on occasions, they will be provided by our accommodation providers onsite. Guests are asked to participate in the preparation of meals, clean-up, and vehicle unpacking/loading as it’s a great way to get to know and connect with your fellow travellers.

Where do we stay overnight?

Given the limited accommodation options in these regions, on occasions, we need to split our group across different properties based on the room fare type requirements. Guests booking a Basic Dorm Bed are paired with other solo travelers in a room, where possible of the same gender but not guaranteed. Here is a list of the properties we use, or a similar alternative.

What kind of vehicle do we travel in for this Melbourne to Adelaide tour?

We use 24-seater Mitsubishi Rosa mini-buses for this trip, this vehicle makes moving people easy, safe, and comfortable. With high back seats and large windows for unobstructed views. The maximum number of passengers we carry on this 3-Day tour is 23 people, with a minimum requirement of 8 people to guarantee the departure.

How much luggage can I bring on tour?

We ask that guests traveling on short breaks/extended tours bring small soft overnight bags and hand luggage only as we have limited storage onboard our vehicles. Large suitcases and oversized luggage can be left at your hotel whilst you are on tour. This tour is not suitable for anyone who requires the use of a mobility aid, wheelchair, walker, and or stroller.

Do I require travel insurance in Australia?

It is recommended that all passengers have personal travel insurance, given we’re actively exploring remote parts of the west coast of Australia with limited access to health professionals in the event of sickness or injury.  Autopia Tours is not authorised to provide information on the type of plan or policy options available. This can be provided by an accredited local travel agent or from your preferred insurance company.

What is the temperature like in South Australia?

The weather in Victoria is unpredictable and can fluctuate regularly. Please ensure you have checked the average temperatures for the time of year you are travelling and have packed adequate clothing. In the event of rain or inclement weather, your experience will still go ahead, unless contacted by the provider.

What is your Vaccination Policy?

In accordance with current Government regulations, it is no longer a requirement to be double vaccinated, although we do highly recommend it.

Our COVID Statement

For your safety, we have implemented comprehensive hygiene measures and increased regular sanitation. Temperature checks of all staff will be conducted pre-departure, with disposable face masks and hand-sanitizer provided. For more information click  here .

I did the 3 Day Melbourne to Adelaide tour at the start of July. Jiri was our tour guide and he was really passionate about talking about the surroundings as well as his specialty: the wildlife! As his passion gave this little extra, all of us were really excited and happy during our tour . I had so much fun during the tour and 3 days was by far not enough as we were having a really good time all together.

I enjoyed this tour very much. The tour took in a LOT of sights in just three days, and went to the Grampians as well as the Melbourne Great Ocean Road. Our driver-guide was Tom and he entertained the group not just with knowledgeable stories but also entertaining and highly apt song choices along the way. Good times.

100% absolutely recommend – only the second group tour that I have ever taken and would re-live the tour over again. Stunning scenery along the Great Ocean Road and in the Grampians National Park, amazing animals but not so friendly as to let me cuddle them and the passion of the tour guide, Jared shone through. Even a little bit of rain didn’t dampen the trip for me or my travel buddies, or the kaolas, wallabies, kangaroos, emus… Loved it! Nikki, UK xx

Did last 3 days the great ocean road tour from Melbourne to Adelaide. Our guide Darren was great. He takes everywhere the time the group need to have to having a great. He said “you’ll be here only once so having a great time”

after the last stop we change the bus to go to Adelaide. Our driver Dave told us t was the most boring road. And he was right 😉 still he did a good job and brought everyone to her/his hostel so 🙂

What an action-packed, stunning and value for money tour this is! I thoroughly enjoyed myself for the entire 3 days, with amazing scenery and wildlife the whole way. Eric the tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and made the tour interesting from start to finish. We had great luck and saw koalas, a whale off the beach at Warrnambool, and even an echidna in the Grampians. The tour is a great mix of active walks, photo opportunities and time to relax. Accommodation was clean and comfortable, and the included food hit the spot! Forget about flying or the bus, this is absolutely the best way to travel between Melbourne and Adelaide!

Melbourne to Adelaide: A 5-day road trip

Day 1: Melbourne to Lorne

Bells Beach, Torquay, VIC © Mark Chew, Tourism Victoria

Bells Beach, Torquay, Victoria © Mark Chew, Tourism Victoria

Morning Drive into the pretty port city of Geelong , 75km (47mi) south-west of Melbourne . Stop for brunch at one of the many local cafés –  King of the Castle  and  Box Office  all have excellent coffee – before stopping at the award-winning  Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre . Here, you can meet resident emus and kangaroos, learn to throw a boomerang and marvel over ancient art techniques, all while gaining valuable knowledge of local culture. The centre's cultural education program will fill you with the wonder and wisdom of Aboriginal culture passed down over generations.

Next, continue on to Torquay . Torquay is where the Great Ocean Road begins and is often dubbed the ‘Surf Capital of Australia’ thanks to its world-famous Bells Beach. It is also the birthplace of leading surf brands Rip Curl and Quicksilver. If you're a first-time surfer, book a private lesson with the  Torquay Surf Academy , which includes equipment and a personal coach. Afterwards grab a sandwich or house-made pie at the  Torquay Larder .

Afternoon The great waves continue at Fairhaven and Eastern View – worth a stop for avid surfers – en route to the seaside holiday resort town of Lorne , a 50-minute drive from Torquay. Once in Lorne, take a dip in the water or keep your feet dry and spend a few hours visiting the galleries and boutiques along the main street. Book well in advance for dinner at fine dining restaurant  Brae , which serves a set menu created from the highest quality local ingredients. There are also six luxury guest suites on site.

Day 2: Lorne and the 12 Apostles to Port Fairy

Cape Otway Lighthouse © Visit Victoria

If time permits, drive to  Cape Otway Lighthouse , the oldest surviving lighthouse in Australia. Climb to the observation deck at the top of the lighthouse for fantastic views across the Southern Ocean.

Morning Enjoy breakfast on the banks of the Erskine River at  Swing Bridge Café  before heading off on the two-hour drive to see the 12 Apostles , a series of towering limestone pillars jutting out of the Southern Ocean. Park at the 12 Apostles car park and follow the paved pathway to the lookout. A 15-minute walk from the 12 Apostles is Gibson's Steps . Descend the 86 stairs, which are carved into the cliff face, to reach the beach, where you'll be rewarded with a close-up view of the Apostles. For another unique perspective of these geological formations,  book a scenic helicopter tour that takes in the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge .

Afternoon Continue along Shipwreck Coast, named after the wild seas that sent at least 700 ships crashing on the rocks. Explore the coastal town of Warrnambool  where, from May to October, southern right whales calve off Logan Beach. Nearby, stop into Worn Gundidj at Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve for guided walking tours from an Aboriginal perspective. Your guide will lead you through a nature reserve inside a dormant volcano where kangaroos, wallabies, emus, koalas, echidnas and hundreds of bird species roam freely. At the end of the tour, try your hand at throwing a returning boomerang.

From here, it's a 30-minute drive to Port Fairy , where you can stroll around the fisherman’s wharf and charming whitewashed cottages before a restful night at the boutique hotel,  Drift House .

Day 3: Port Fairy to Coonawarra

Umpherston Sinkhole, Mount Gambier, Limestone Coast, SA © South Australian Tourism Commission

Umpherston Sinkhole, Mount Gambier, Limestone Coast, South Australia © South Australian Tourism Commission

Morning Carry on along the route to the historic township of Portland, a one-hour drive from Port Fairy. Watch fishing boats unload their catch on the waterfront before taking the 10-minute drive to the photogenic Cape Nelson Lighthouse . Here you can take a tour to delve into the maritime history of the region. Drive around to  Bridgewater Bay Café  where you can rest and refuel before taking the 2.5km (1.6mi) Cape Bridgewater Seal Walk . The viewing platform at the end of the trail looks out to a colony of roughly 650 Australian fur seals. Book a cage snorkel dive to get up close and personal with these playful animals.

Afternoon Back on the highway, drive 50 minutes through Nelson and across the South Australian border. Stop at Mount Gambier , which sits on an ancient extinct volcano and is circled by vivid crater lakes. Take the 3.6km (2.2mi) trail around Blue Lake, which turns cobalt blue from December to March. You can also spend a bit of time exploring the stunning Umpherston Sinkhole . This unique natural attraction was once a cave formed through the dissolution of the limestone; the sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed downwards. It was turned into a picturesque garden by James Umpherston around 1886 and is open at all times to visit. Check it out at dusk to see the area come alive as resident possums venture into the floodlit gardens to feed.

Hop back in the car for the one hour drive north to Coonawarra , a region famed for its cabernet sauvignon. Drop in to one of the 20 cellar doors, such as  Wynns Coonawarra Estate  or  Balnaves , before checking into  Punter's Vineyard Retreat , which offers panoramic views across the vines.

Day 4: Coonawarra to Victor Harbor

Granite Island Tram, Victor Harbor, SA © Graham Scheer, South Australian Tourism Commission

Granite Island Tram, Victor Harbor, South Australia © Graham Scheer, South Australian Tourism Commission

Morning Drive half an hour north from Coonawarra to visit the World Heritage-listed  Naracoorte Caves National Park , where 26 limestone caves house the fossilised skeletons of giant marsupials. Four of the caves are open to the public via a self-guided tour. From here it's a three-hour drive to the quaint town of Strathalbyn, where more than 30 heritage-listed buildings sit on the banks of the Angas River. The town is home to specialty antique shops and the idyllic Soldiers Memorial Gardens, a great spot for a picnic lunch.

Afternoon Jump back into the car for the 40-minute drive south to Port Elliot. Swim at Horseshoe Bay or surf at Boomer Beach before arriving in nearby Victor Harbor . The seaside town is famed for its horse-drawn tramway (which dates back to 1878) and links Victor Harbor with Granite Island. Ride the tram across the causeway to Granite Island, which is home to a colony of little penguins. If you're visiting Victor Harbor between June and October, book  The Big Duck  boat tour to see the southern right whale breeding sanctuary of Encounter Bay. Stay the night in luxury waterfront accommodation at  The Bluff Resort Apartments  overlooking Encounter Bay.

Morning Travel through the rolling hills of Mount Compass to the McLaren Vale wine region, a 50-minute drive north from Port Elliot. Visit galleries and taste wine at some of the 45 cellar doors, including Yangarra , d'Arenberg and Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard . McLaren Vale is also a haven for foodies. Sit down for lunch at  Coriole Restaurant  and let the chef prepare you a selection of seasonal dishes accompanied by matching wines.

Afternoon From here, it’s an easy 45-minute drive to central Adelaide . Wander the cultural boulevard of North Terrace – home to the South Australian Museum and Adelaide Botanic Garden – then browse the department stores in Rundle Mall. Take the 35-minute tram trip from Rundle Mall to Glenelg Beach for a seaside stroll before heading back into the centre for dinner at any of the city's hottest restaurants . AFL 2024: Lachie Neale set to play 250th game against Melbourne

A Brisbane superstar hopes to play his 250th game this weekend as he says the Lions celebrated each other’s efforts better in their breakthrough win.

Brisbane superstar Lachie Neale is confident he will be fit to play his milestone game on Thursday after sitting out the end of the Lions’ breakthrough Gather Round win.

Neale said ankle soreness from an incident during the round 3 loss to Collingwood had led to the decision for him to be subbed out early in the final quarter of the Kangaroos clash at Norwood.

The dual Brownlow medallist, who is poised to play his 250th AFL game at the MCG against Melbourne on Thursday, denied a “splintering” among Brisbane players had been responsible for the disastrous 0-4 start to the season.

But he said the Lions playing with “more energy” and celebrating each other’s efforts more had been a key difference as they claimed their first victory since last year’s preliminary final.

“I don’t know if it makes us closer – we’re pretty close as it is,” Neale said when asked about the scrutiny into Brisbane players’ relationships after the loss to Collingwood.

Brisbane players were all smiles after the Lions’ first win of the season over North Melbourne at Norwood Oval on Friday. Picture: Dylan Burns / Getty Images

“To be honest, I haven’t seen any splintering or anything at all, we feel like we’re a pretty tight-knit group all the time.

“Having that questioned I suppose, or put in the public forum maybe does give you an extra one or two per cent.

“But I thought the guys really celebrated on the weekend – our goals, our smothers, tackles, all the little things, we celebrated them well, which was probably lacking a little bit in the first couple of weeks.”

Neale, 30, said he was feeling the benefits of sitting out the final quarter on Friday as he praised the Lions’ fitness staff for helping him back up between matches when he sometimes doubted he could make it to the line.

“(The ankle) is feeling pretty good, it’s pulled up well, so probably the extra quarter’s rest helped I reckon,” he said.

“Just from the week before, I had a pretty nasty roll against Collingwood – the game was pretty much over I think at three-quarter time, so I just had a little rest.

“Like everyone I’ve got to tick off some agility and speed and whatnot to make sure I’m ready to go, but it feels better than this time last week so I’m really confident that I’ll be good to go Thursday night.”

He said Brisbane’s decision-making adjustments going inside 50 had been notable as they dismantled the Kangaroos and would be crucial again in combating a Melbourne backline led by star interceptors Steven May and Jake Lever.

“I think the biggest thing was our ball movement and our cohesion with our forwards, giving them the best chance,” he said.

“I thought we lowered our eyes a bit better, and we took 20-odd marks inside 50, which we definitely haven’t done this year so far.

“They’ve got guys who are performing so well down back that we will have to change angles and use the free player that’s available instead of just bombing it in all the time to Joe (Daniher) and Eric (Hipwood) and hoping for the best.

“When we’ve got time and space and free numbers, we want to be able to use it, and I think in the first few weeks we weren’t doing that well enough.”

Coach Sam Mitchell is staying optimistic, but Hawthorn will need to break a decade-long drought to claim their first win of the season.

Two All-Australian Western Bulldogs are no longer walk-up-starts and their names are being mentioned as targets for other clubs.

Popular sport presenter Nathan Templeton’s final Instagram post shows just how tragic the Sunrise reporter’s sudden death is.
