U2 announce details of Innocence and Experience world tour 2015

Spanning 19 cities in Europe and north America, new gigs will take place in a series of indoor arenas rather than the massive stadiums favoured on 360° tour

U2 have announced details of their Songs of Innocence tour. Perhaps a nod to their iTunes album ambush, the tour is entitled the “iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour” and will see the group play indoor arenas for the first time in a decade.

Including four dates at Madison Square Garden in New York and London’s O2, the tour features a pair of gigs in each of the 19 cities it pulls into. “We are going to try to have a completely different feeling from night one to night two” said Bono, “and have some fun playing with the idea of innocence and experience. More to be revealed!”

While there are no confirmed Irish dates yet, a spokesperson for the band has confirmed that Bono and company have planned some additional shows in Dublin at the end of next year as part of the “U2-initiated music generation project” – details of which have not yet been announced.

The tour will support the band’s most recent album, Songs of Innocence, which was given to U2.com subscribers and delivered to more than half a billion iTunes music store customers worldwide.

“The anticipation for a U2 tour is always extraordinary, as it should be,” said Arthur Fogel, president of Global Touring and chairman of Global Music. “Following the record-setting 360° tour, I’m amazed that they still want to be ground-breaking, this time on a more intimate scale.”

In an interview with the band back in November, the Edge suggested U2 may not be embarking on a monumental series of dates comparable with their 360° Tour, which spanned 110 concerts and grossed approximately £450m . “I think we will start small,” he told Rolling Stone . “We certainly can’t get any bigger than the last tour.”

Bono described the anticipated scale of U2’s forthcoming gigs in an interview with Absolute Radio: “[We want to] try and play the O2 [arena] and places like that, more indoors than outdoors this time, but we’ll see where it takes us,” he said . “You know what it’s like now, it’s like a whole city goes on the road with us.”

Tickets for all shows will go on general sale on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 December.

U2’s Flight to Now (Turbulence Included)

innocence and experience tour 2015

By Jon Pareles

  • April 29, 2015

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — It was definitive arena rock, loud and clear, filling Pacific Coliseum here with surging sound. The Edge blared a distorted two-chord guitar riff, Larry Mullen Jr.’s tom-toms and cymbals landed hard on the backbeat, Adam Clayton’s bass throbbed down below, and Bono was unleashing “woo-oohs” in exultant falsetto. U2 has taken over the coliseum for a month of full-scale rehearsal to assemble its “Innocence and Experience” tour, which starts at Rogers Arena here on May 14, and the band was charging through “Elevation.” The stage was an austere geometry of fluorescent tubes; the song was triumphant. “Wow, that’s four years since we played that?” Bono said as the last chord faded. “Not bad!”

U2, the Irish band that released its debut album in 1980, is about to test its place in the present. Because Apple gave away millions of copies of U2’s 2014 album, “Songs of Innocence” — its 13th studio album and its first since “No Line on the Horizon” in 2009 — the band has no way to gauge the album’s impact through conventional measures of sales. The album also faced a furious online backlash from nonfans who resented it showing up in their music libraries or iCloud as “purchased,” even though it was free. Until it performs the songs on tour, U2 won’t know for sure whether anyone paid close attention to their work. “The idea that there may be a whole swath of audience out there that don’t yet know they like the band is really turning us on,” Bono said. “It makes us want to go out and find them if they’re there.” He paused. “They may not be there.”

The “Innocence and Experience” tour scales down to arenas after U2’s gigantic “360° Tour” in 2009-2011 — a tour that sold out stadiums worldwide with a huge, flashy, edifice of a stage. The new tour uses high-resolution video and takes a radical new approach to arena sound; it’s technologically savvy and determined to be intimate, and the Apple backlash apparently didn’t affect it. The tour has sold 98 percent of the 1.2 million available tickets for its 68 concerts, including sellouts for its entire European stretch and, in New York City, for the first six of eight shows at Madison Square Garden, starting July 18. But U2 hopes to stir more than loyalty and eagerness for oldies.

“Songs of Innocence” has a dual and sometimes contradictory mandate. It aims for mass pop impact with songs full of individual, local details and memories. U2’s confidence was shaken by the response to “No Line on the Horizon.” Despite the international barnstorming of the “360°” tour, “No Line on the Horizon” didn’t yield the hit single that U2 has always prized: songs like “Where the Streets Have No Name” and “Pride (In the Name of Love)” that merge popularity with an implied sense of high-minded solidarity.

So the band set out to discipline its songwriting, building from acoustic-guitar basics rather than the sonic experiments of “No Line on the Horizon”; it also chose younger-generation producers. Yet the new album’s lyrics steer away from simple, teen-oriented rock, often looking back. “We wanted to think that we could make songs that were contemporary to what radio plays now, but in reality we come from a different place,” Mr. Clayton said. “We have to write from the perspective of that journey, that 35-year journey.”

The band remains nonplussed by what Bono now calls the “difficult birth” of “Songs of Innocence.” At the time, band members say, it seemed like a way to reach listeners as directly as possible. “Just to puncture public consciousness at this time is really, really hard, so we were trying to think of ways that would get our album through to people,” the Edge said backstage. “The prospect of putting it out and have it just disappearing down a rabbit hole, which seems to happen to so many albums now — that would be soul-destroying.”

A month after the release, Apple announced that 26 million people had downloaded the entire album. But what U2 and Apple considered a gift — Apple paid Universal to give away the album — was treated by a fast-reacting blogosphere as spam, an intrusion into personal devices and an overbearing exercise of power by a self-important rock band and a technology corporation. U2 issued a partial apology in a video interview on Facebook, in which Bono described the album release as “a drop of megalomania, a touch of generosity, a dash of self-promotion and deep fear that these songs that we’d poured our life into over the last few years mightn’t be heard. There’s a lot of noise out there. I guess we got a little noisy ourselves to get through it.” Apple offered a one-click way to delete the album.

Now, Bono reflected: “I think Apple and we got a lot of the backlash that was headed to Big Tech for knowing too much about us. But in fact, Apple is not interested in every search you ever made — it’s only interested in your music, so it’s not fair to tar them with that brush. And as a person who’s been a lifelong member of Amnesty International, of all human-rights crimes I think that this kind of unwanted mail, if it’s at the top of your list or even halfway up it, your life is really fantastic.”

Kevin Weatherly, senior vice president for programming at CBS Radio and program director of KROQ in Los Angeles, predicted: “The tour is going to spark a lot of interest. When all is said and done people are going to revisit the album. Quality wins out.”

Despite the giveaway, sales of the physical “deluxe edition” version of the album, which added a few songs and arrived in October, did land it in the Billboard Top 10. Nielsen SoundScan has tabulated sales of 101,000 copies of “Songs of Innocence.” But further promotion for the album was derailed in November, just before U2 was about to start a weeklong residency on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and announce the tour it had been planning since 2013. That was when Bono had a bicycle accident in Central Park that fractured his eye socket, his shoulder, his elbow and his left hand. “I really used to think that my head was harder than any surface it came in contact with, and I don’t anymore,” Bono said backstage. “I didn’t come off a Harley-Davidson. I came off a push bike and smashed myself to bits. There is no glory here.”

Onstage in the coliseum, Bono worked the space with the assurance of a longtime frontman, often using his left hand to grasp the microphone or to point a finger skyward. But he is still recovering. “It feels like I have somebody else’s hand,” he said backstage. Pointing to his curled fourth finger and pinky, he said, “I can’t bend these, and this” — he pointed to another part of his hand — “is like rigor mortis. But they say that nerves heal about a millimeter a week, so in about 13 months I should know if it’s coming back.” He gestured to his forearm and elbow. “It’s all numb here, and this is titanium,” he said. “The shoulder’s better, the face is better.”

He held up his hand again. “But this is the hard bit because I can’t play guitar,” he said, then glanced at the other band members. “They don’t seem to mind,” he said with a half-grin.

Last week, U2 was exploring its new arena setup as its production team tried out visuals and effects, followed by meetings that dissected every possibility: A string section for ballads? Video images or color fields? How to pare down a sprawling set list? Bono did most of the talking, but it was obvious that U2 was determined to work by consensus, weighing each idea respectfully. “The songs are the boss. They tell us what to do and they tell everyone in this building what to do,” the Edge said during a dinner meeting. “We’ve just got to unlock what the songs are asking and telling us what to do.”

The initial idea was to work up two entirely different concerts, but U2 worried about leaving out staples or having fans think they’d gotten the second-best show. As of last week, it planned instead to have a relatively fixed first half and a varying second one — separated, for the first time on a U2 tour, by an intermission. The band is also planning to work the entire room. Running nearly the length of the coliseum floor was U2’s triple platform: a large rectangular stage (a strip of which could light up as “I” for Innocence), a smaller round stage (“e” for experience) and, between them, a walkway that’s wide enough to become a third stage, sometimes sandwiched between LED video screens. “Here they are in an arena, and we want to land them in the audience’s lap,” said Es Devlin , the production designer, who has also done tours by Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

The tour’s most striking innovation isn’t immediately obvious. U2 has moved its sound system to arena ceilings: an oval of 12 speaker arrays that sends the music downward evenly everywhere in the arena. When I walked all around the coliseum as the band played, the music was uniformly transparent and strong, the volume constant from front to back. “If you’re trying to blast sound the length of the venue from the stage, the venue sometimes wins and you get mud,” the Edge said. “With this, you don’t have to have it so loud — you’re getting good quality sound from something that’s much closer to you than normal.”

The band calls the walkway the divider stage because that’s what it does midway through the concert — turning into a barrier that separates the audience completely. The division is part of the concert’s underlying narrative, a passage from innocence to experience inflected by Irish memories. “Songs of Innocence” is U2’s most specifically autobiographical album; its titles include “Cedarwood Road,” where Bono grew up, and “Iris,” named after his mother, who died when he was young. At the start of the concert, the band is illuminated by a lone swinging light bulb, as Bono was in the room in 10 Cedarwood Road where he started to play music. There’s another idea as well, Bono explained: “After all the scale and sculpture of ‘360,’ to begin the next tour with only a single light bulb.”

The concert’s bleak midpoint — “the end of the innocence,” Bono calls it — is “Raised by Wolves,” a song from the album about a terrorist car bombing in Dublin that killed 33 people on May 17, 1974. “We grew up in a culture where random terrorism was a horror. It’s now part of everyday life worldwide,” said Gavin Friday, one of Bono’s childhood friends who led the post-punk band the Virgin Prunes in the 1970s, and who has long worked with U2 on staging. At the coliseum, Mr. Friday and a sound engineer were assembling an audio collage of explosions, speeches and news reports around the 1974 bombing. “The way the album was released, Apple overshadowed the whole thing, so the album was never really listened to,” he said bluntly. “I was told to make the song really real.”

At the intermission, Bono said, half-seriously, “people will walk out into the aisles not buying T-shirts but having counseling, and wondering, ‘Where did the fun go?’ ” The second half of the concert breaks down the divide and, true to U2’s past, promises healing and love. “When we undo that division, we’ve got to really glue them together,” Bono said.

Backstage at the coliseum was a warren of activity: construction, video programming, sound editing, catering, a rehearsal room with another set of instruments. An HBO crew was shooting a tour documentary. And there was one more curtained nook: recording, with a mobile studio setup. There the next U2 album, “Songs of Experience,” is taking shape.

During the enforced downtime after his accident, Bono had been writing songs, sometimes with a guitarist to play the chords he couldn’t. “At the very end of an album you’re at the height of your powers in terms of writing, arranging and performing,” the Edge said. “It’s a shame that you have to stop then and start the other phase of what we do, which is playing live. This time we haven’t really stopped. Bono is trying to capitalize on that momentum and that sharpness.” New producers have been joining the band in Vancouver, including Andy Barlow from the electronic group Lamb, who cued up some of the U2 tracks in progress like “Red Flag Day,” “Civilization” and “Instrument Flying” as Bono enthusiastically sang along with himself. “We’re keeping the discipline on songs and pushing out the parameters of the sound,” Bono said. “They’re very basic earthy things, irreverent. They’re not lofty themes. One of the things that experience has taught us is to be fully in the moment. What’s the moment? Pop music.”

But in the meantime, the band has a tour to mobilize. “On May 14 we’re going to find out if the album worked and if the experiment worked,” Bono said. “If people know those words and feel those songs, then the experiment was right.”

U2 Announces 'Innocence + Experience' World Tour | Billboard

After months of speculation, Billboard has learned that U2 will announce 44 shows in 19 cities from its upcoming arena tour today, the U2 Innocence + Experience Tour 2015, beginning in May. The first shows will be May 14-15 in Vancouver, B.C., with the first leg to include 22 initial shows across North America, followed by 22 more in the U.K. and Europe. The tour is produced by Live Nation’s Global Touring division, led by Arthur Fogel , president of Global Touring and chairman of Global Music for Live Nation.

To begin the tour, which is in support of U2’s album Songs Of Innocence , the band will play six cities in North America (three in Canada, six in the U.S.), and 10 cities in the U.K. and Europe, beginning Sept. 4 in Turin, Italy. All of the tour stops are at least doubles, with four shows announced for the Forum in Los Angeles, Madison Square Garden in New York, and the O2 in London. A Nov. 16 bicycle accident that seriously injured frontman Bono did not delay the start of the tour, which has long been slated to begin in the spring of 2015.

U2 Releases Video Album Version of ‘Songs of Innocence’

Trending on Billboard

Pre-sale tickets will go on sale for the fan club on Dec. 4, and tickets for the general public go up on Dec. 8. While only the first leg of North America, the U.K., and Europe will be announced out of the gate, when it comes to U2, the world is their oyster, and it would be not out of the question for the tour to run as long as three years, most likely returning to North America and U.K./Europe second runs, along with visits to Asia, South America, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Australia, and other territories, depending on how long the band wants to work.

U2 is the top touring act in the world, having moved 22.8 million tickets to 625 shows that grossed $1.5 billion at the box office in the past 30 years, according to Billboard Boxscore. The band’s last tour, U2 360 in 2009-2011, was the biggest tour in history , with 110 shows that grossed $736.4 million and moved 7.2 million tickets, both all-time records. With so many multiples on the upcoming tour, U2 could conceivably approach those 360 numbers with Innocence + Experience, but it would seem unlikely they could surpass them, given the huge stadium capacities on 360, and it does seem the goals are different this time around.

Innocence + Experience will find U2 returning to the relatively intimate confines of arenas for the first time since the Vertigo tour in 2005-2007, which grossed $389 million, according to Boxscore. On 360, U2 played only stadiums, but, rather than relating to demand — 360 sold every ticket in every city in a stagnant concert market — the move to arenas is likely driven more by aesthetics. U2 is one of the very few bands capable of selling out stadiums around the world, but the band is a product of arenas, with those venues proving a fitting showcase for U2 since they first rose to that level 30 years ago. After the enormity and spectacle of 360, it has long been thought that the band would scale things back on their next run, and indoor arenas serve the introspective, personal nature of the music on Songs Of Innocence .

Bono on U2’s iTunes Giveaway: ‘It’s One of the Proudest Things for Us Ever’

U2 breaks new concert production ground on every tour, often with elements which later become widely adopted by the industry, and Innocence and Experience will be no exception. As with “the claw” staging that stunned on the 360 tour, this arena production will feature its own innovation, with the staging in the middle of the bowl and spanning the length of the arena floor. U2’s typically eye-popping video elements (as in the video cylinder that awed on 360) will have a giant double-sided screen running above the stage.

The tour will also be conceptually unique in terms of the music. Routing shows that the cities are all booked in multiples of two dates in each market, which is no accident. Though the concept is being refined, it is believed that the band will be performing two different shows in each market on consecutive nights, built around the “innocence + experience” theme. That said, all tickets will be sold as individual night tickets, with no package deals.

Arenas will be sold to full capacity, with views of the stage from all angles. Scaling follows the historical U2 model, with floor tickets priced at $65, prime seats priced at $250-$275 (depending on the market), scaled all the way down to a significant number of seats priced at $30.

At this stage, the only corporate partner is UPS, which will be U2’s “official logistics partner” on the tour.  This partnership is designed to help defray freight and transport costs, allowing the tour to move the massive production more cost-effectively, particularly on an international level.

The concert film captures the groundbreaking iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE tour as it returned to the French capital in December 2015.  The New York Times put it like this:  "The Paris show that concluded U2's Innocence and Experience tour was concert as personal memoir, archetypal story, prayer, exorcism and vow of unity."

The 2.5 hour film, directed by Hamish Hamilton, includes guest performances by Eagles of Death Metal and, on the deluxe version, by Patti Smith, which also features behind-the-scenes documentary, additional music videos and live tracks and a tour of the visuals narrated by the band's lifelong friend Gavin Friday.

"Directing iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE was scary," says live broadcast director Hamish Hamilton who previously worked with U2 on 2001's Elevation Tour. "A technical nightmare married with a creative rollercoaster. It challenged everything I knew on so many levels...What blew my mind were the multiple narrative arcs combined with the number of emotional arcs you are taken through as you journey through the show. There's a lot of good shows out there - but very few great shows."

U2's iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour kicked off in Vancouver in May 2015 and in 2015 played to over 1.2 million fans in 22 cities across Europe and North America. Staged in the round, the tour features multiple performance areas plus a state of the art 100 foot LED screen suspended above a 118 foot walkway running the length of the arena floor. Combined with an innovative suspended sound system, the tour has delivered mindblowing sound and visuals from every seat in every venue. As Rolling Stone put it, "U2 reinvent the arena show."    From 'Songs of Innocence' musical highlights include "Cedarwood Road", "Song for Someone" and the stripped down live version of "Every Breaking Wave". Career-spanning staples include '"I Will Follow", "Pride (In the Name of Love)", "Vertigo", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Until The End of the World", "Beautiful Dayv and "Where The Streets Have No Name".

U2 iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris is released on Blu-Ray , DVD and digital download . The Standard DVD features 30 tracks (see listing below), the Deluxe DVD and Blu-Ray formats come with a second disc of bonus material including Gavin Friday’s guide to "Cedarwood Road", director Hamish Hamilton’s behind-the-scenes documentary, on-stage tour videos for "The Wanderer" and "The Troubles" as well as six music videos commissioned for single releases from Songs of Innocence. Highlights of the Super Deluxe Box collection include all of the above as well as an exclusive USB lightbulb, a 64-Page Hardback Book, Dog Tags, Stencil Set, Pin Badges  and a download code.

Beyoncé’s Rumored Rock Album: Fans Hoping to Hear Tina Turner, Playboi Carti, Paramore, blink-182, and More

After the launch of the country-inspired 'Cowboy Carter' album, could Bey be closing out the trilogy with a mosh-ready collection of rock joints?

While Beyoncé ’s country-inspired Cowboy Carter isn’t quite a week old, fans are understandably already speculating about how the singer might wrap up her planned trilogy. Namely, could she be tackling rock 's history next?

if act iii IS rock-focused, which rock artists would y’all want to see on the track list? — cowboy troy (@hthaze) March 31, 2024

Such speculation received one hell of a boost back in February after Bey rocked an impressive mullet for a CR Fashion Book photo shoot , with fans pointing to the pics as proof that a rock-focused third chapter was on the way.

Post- Cowboy Carter , the speculation has only continued to build. Fans have gotten specific with regards to who, and what, they're hoping to hear on this hypothetical (for now) rock turn from the 32-time Grammy winner . Most recently, the Rockyoncé talk procured more fuel for the hype fire thanks to a timely handwritten note , paired with flowers, that saw Bey telling Third Man Records founder (and previous Lemonade collaborator) Jack White “how much you inspired” her work on Act II .

White is far from the only rock music figure to have recorded and/or performed with Bey over the years. In 2004, she and the late Prince unforgettably opened that year's Grammys ceremony with a medley including “Purple Rain” and “Crazy in Love.” 12 years later, she joined the Chris Martin-fronted Coldplay for the band's Super Bowl 50 halftime show, where she performed the Lemonade -launching “Formation.”

Like with Cowboy Carter and its inclusion and celebration of Black country artists who are often unfairly not given the same due as white artists, a potential rock album from Bey could see her diving deep into rock’s history. For one, the very existence of rock 'n' roll at large can be traced straight back to the work of influential Black musicians. From there, the music’s skyrocketing popularity and continued experimentation led to numerous subgenres, from punk to alternative.

With that in mind, it's easy to see why fans are so stoked on the idea of a (again, theoretical) rock-inspired album from Beyoncé. Below, see a wide-ranging sampling of who, and what, fans are hoping to hear on Act III . The list is fittingly lengthy and includes but is certainly not limited to: a Tina Turner cover (and/or a posthumous feature) plus collaborations with Paramore , Fall Out Boy , Playboi Carti , blink-182 , Brittany Howard, and more.

If #ActIII is a rock album, I need Beyoncé to do a cover of Rock Me Baby by Tina Turner. She has the growl, the sex appeal and the creativity to absolutely smash that song. #Beyonce pic.twitter.com/9bKQGDwuyj — Cowboy LaShoncé (@lupitabaeyongo) March 29, 2024
@paramore @evanescence @piercetheveil @blink182 GET YALL ASS IN THE STUDIO FOR ACT 3!!!! BEYONCE NEEDS YALL pic.twitter.com/Ch50kZNG24 — 2727🤍✨ (@_aniyagraham) March 29, 2024
If Beyoncé’s Act iii is indeed a rock album, I hope she covers Ram Jam’s “Black Betty.” The 70s tracks is now a staple for Black queer DJ’s who play house music. #COWBOYCARTER pic.twitter.com/lnRJlq3adn — Carlos (@carlosjharris) March 30, 2024
Now if Beyonce’s does do a Rock album imma need to see paramore on it. 🙂 — 𓂀 𝕸 𝖔 𝖓 𝖙 𝖊 𝖗 𝖔 𓂀 (@ayoitstero) April 2, 2024
if beyonce does a rock album…heres how we can get a beyonce x fall out boy song…. — jolyne 🍉| GOT GET BUSY LIVING!!! (@mrsandmansbeam) March 30, 2024
If act iii is rock, she definitely got that tina turner feature on there. #beyonce pic.twitter.com/OLTy8bQYqu — Lexy Jayye (@sagvenus1) March 29, 2024
Beyoncé better call them if act iii is a rock album pic.twitter.com/DYCrbhDULp — Jack Roskopp (@jackroskopp) March 29, 2024
all i got to say is if beyoncé’s next album is rock, i’m going to need pierce the veil on it! pic.twitter.com/R3KCn3pRNj — druberry 🫐 (@druskiiiiiiii) March 29, 2024
if playboi carti don’t make it we riot https://t.co/LTO63Otmbj — cherise johnson (@yourCheriseAmor) April 2, 2024
@Beyonce is never gonna see any of my tweets but ima @ her everytime. If actiii is rock. Samantha mumba, muni long, Macy grey, Haley Williams (paramore), @LilTunechi (Mr Carter rock rmx.. idk chile 🔥), Travis barker…. 2 the stage! So manyyyyy but this off the top tho… — Tone (@__ToneLoc) April 1, 2024

Hayley williams on act iii watch this space! pic.twitter.com/OYRw3tRdMA — HEEDlE (@heyheedie) March 28, 2024

Will any of this ultimately come to pass? Hard to say. However, it's not been lost on fans that Bey does indeed mention protecting someone “ in the mosh pit ” on the Cowboy Carter track “Bodyguard.”
