Georgia’s mix of natural beauty, medieval history and Soviet influences has made it one of Eastern Europe’s most fascinating destinations.

Best time to visit georgia.

Spring and autumn are the best times to head to Georgia. Summers (especially July and August) can be very hot and humid with temperatures reaching up to 104ºF. This is a great time to escape to the Black Sea or the mountains to cool off.

Winters can be very cold, although the country rarely freezes over. However, power supplies are frequently interrupted, so don’t rely on heating. This is a beautiful, fertile region so bring an umbrella and expect rain at any time of year! Learn more about the best time to visit Georgia.

Geography and environment

Georgia’s spiky topography makes for stunning scenery. The Greater Caucasus Mountains crisscross the country, divvying it up into pockets of forests, valleys, and glaciers. Its only coastline runs 330 km along the stunning Black Sea. Georgia’s neighbors include the Russian Federation, Turkey , Armenia and Azerbaijan .

Culture and customs

Georgia is one of those countries with a truly unique geographical position, sitting on the border of two continents, Europe and Asia. Over time, the land known as Georgia has been invaded, conquered, fought over, and divided by several of history’s greatest empires, including the Ottoman, Russian, and Soviet Empires. But despite all this, the cultural identity of Georgia has held strong, with traditional language, dance, cuisine, and stories still passionately celebrated across the nation.

Today, Georgia’s culture is more linked to Europe than Asia. The popularity of Christianity is thought to have been the largest factor for the more Western influence and this is especially noticeable when observing the architecture.

Today, Georgians still make up the majority of the population and hold true to their traditional language. Much research has been conducted about the Georgian alphabet. It is now thought that this unique alphabet and writing system was created as early as the 3 rd century BC before going through multiple variations leading to the modern writing system in use today.

There are several great ways to understand and appreciate Georgian history. One is to attend a Georgian supra, an ancient ritual that brings people together over a large meal to celebrate or commemorate important moments in life. Another great option is to watch a traditional folk dance. Performed in national dress, these dances communicate unique stories through fast-paced movements and various instrumental accompaniments.

Eating and drinking

What do you get when a country sits on the border of two mega continents and was once an important part of the Silk Road trade route? Only a cuisine abundant in tantalizing tastes, unique ingredients, and cooking techniques originating from all parts of the world.

And that’s not even mentioning the fact that Georgia has been producing wine since 6000 BC or that it's thought to be one of the first to use wheat and honey. Don’t just take our word for how tasty the food is. Instead, eat your way through the regional dishes and Georgian specialties on our 8 day Georgia Real Food Adventure tour.

Things to try in Georgia:

Not only is this dish a delicious dumpling filled with minced meat, spices, and vegetables, but it’s also an old Georgian offering to the sun, with the 28 folds symbolizing the solar cycles. Found throughout the many regions of Georgia, you’ll likely hear the slurping of this tasty dumpling wherever you go.

Cheese and bread take on a whole new life in Georgia with one of their favorite dishes, khachapuri, found in every part of the country. There are many versions of the dish to try, from the three cheese varieties to those made with potato or an egg cracked on top. You'll also see a wide array of shapes and cooking techniques, depending on where you are in the country.

Nigvziani badrijani

Nigvziani badrijani is an eggplant and walnut dish that makes for a great light snack or appetizer, especially for vegetarians and vegans. Eggplants are a prominent vegetable in Georgia and are grown in every region of the country. Nigvziani badrijani can be prepared in different ways with some frying, grilling or baking the eggplant and combining it with the flavored walnut spread.

Churchkhela

Churchkhela may look like candlewax, but in actuality, it’s a sweet treat of nuts and dried fruit threaded on a string and dipped in a mixture of grape juice, sugar, and flour. After a good build-up of the grape mixture, the dish is left to air-dry. This gives the treat a lengthy shelf life, which came in handy when it was used for sustenance by Georgian soldiers of old.

Georgian wine

Evidence suggests wine has long been produced in and around Georgia since as early as 6000 BC. With such a lengthy amount of time winemaking, the Georgians can definitley create an aromatic glass of vino. Georgia also has around 500 varieties of indigenously grown grapes. When in town, you may be able to see how wine was made in a qvevri during ancient times.

Georgia Adventure Tour

Georgia Adventure

The tour was overall very good. I think however that the Stalin museum should be added (e.g. on the way back from Batumi). We were lucky to stop there on our last day because there was no traffic going back to Tbilisi and all participants found this very interesting. I think leaving a bit earlier from Batumi (not at 9h) could enable future groups to not miss this opportunity.

Introducing Georgia and Its People Tour

Introducing Georgia and Its People

I really enjoyed this tour. It took us to Mtskheta, Kazbegi (Stepanmintsda) and the Kakheeti region. It was an intense 4 days, full of learning, discovery and amazing natural sights (mountains, rivers, streams, reservoirs etc...) and of course countless churches and monasteries. Our guide, Mr Paata made it an exceptional tour. A kind, knowledgeable and friendly man, he made sure we enjoyed the tour, adjusted it to our needs and offered suggestions on what to do and where to stay for the rest of my trip. Paata made this tour much more pleasant & memorable. Madloba Paata! I really fell in love with this beautiful country, so small yet so packed with history, natural beauty and exceptionally warm people.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Georgia

A great 11 day intro to the republic of georgia including beautiful mountain views, a modern city of Batumi, a historical walk through Tbilisi, and wonderful meals with Georgian hospitality. I couldn't ask for a better weather for the trip. The guide Zurab was full of energy, super fun, and so informative on Georgian culture. He helped me out regarding booking a taxi, getting a sim card and providing ideas during free time. It was a relaxed trip into such an untouristed country with a European flair with old churches and great food. I really wished we had more than a day to explore Ushguli...that's a super cool old timey* place to explore. Long travel days, but lots of unexpected surprises along the way. Highly recommend!!!
Our driver/ guide, Paata, was very kind, accommodating, and professional throughout our journey across beautiful Georgia. Always full of humour and good vibes with him around. Safety is always observed on the road, where we spend a lot of time on during the trip. Highly recommended if you’re joining this tour. Niko from Exotour was responsive with his replies leading to our departure. Overall it was a smooth booking process. Madloba to you both! Itinerary covers a lot (too many) of monasteries and churches from the start. So I reckon this might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But hey, welcome to Georgia! Expect long hours on the road especially outside summer seasons when daylight is shorter because the itinerary is packed. At times you might feel rushed at certain places. It’s therefore good to plan ahead where you wanna spend more time and let your guide know. We truly enjoy our time in Mestia, Gudauri, and Kazbegi from the itinerary, where we are close to nature. Tbilisi and Batumi are very nice to walk around. Accommodations are mostly at 3-star hotels, imo. Better not to expect 4-star standards or else you might be disappointed. All included meals were adequate. We enjoy our stay in Mestia the most, and we are glad spending 2 nights there. Overall this tour covers a lot of ground within the given time and tries to give you a pretty wholistic experience of Georgia. Happy to recommend this to my friends. Gamarjoba!
Heard so many things about Georgia and got the recommendation for this trip from my friend, I can't imagine any better version of my vacation there, love each moment of it. Many thanks for all of your work

I called Carol to book a last minute cruise and she was able to find a fabulous, cruise on Royal Caribbean within my timeline and under budget! Carol is super knowledgeable about the trips that she books so you get the best customer experience and the most bang for your buck. She even booked my hotel, since I am going down a day before. The hotel price includes breakfast, parking for the length of the cruise, and a shuttle that will transport us to and from the cruise ship terminal! Like literally, all we have to do is show up and everything is taken care of! Too easy!! Love it and although I haven’t cruised yet- LOL. I can’t wait to book my next trip!!

Travel agency Georgia

Why choose a travel agency georgia.

Choosing a local travel agency in Georgia means saving time and energy, receiving  the best advice and services from local experts, getting easy access to local hotels, transport, and restaurants, and most importantly having competitive rates.

A  tour operator in Georgia can provide travel experts and the services you need to make all your necessary travel arrangements without having to hire additional staff.

Local experienced travel agents

Local tour operators will always have an edge on their foreign counterparts because you simply can’t beat the local knowledge that comes from growing up in a place, not to mention the ‘insider knowledge’ and random local information that comes with it.

Local tour agencies are likely to have a more extensive network of local partners and contacts. For example, VisitGeorgia, as a Georgia -based tour agency, can put together some extremely unique and tailored experiences for your companies to offer in Georgia, that you won’t find on the typical Georgian travel brochure.

Travel agents save you time

A local travel partner capable of offering you not just hotel services, but as many complimentary services as possible, will save you time.

From car rentals to hassle-free transfers, it’s essential to make your life as easy as it can be. A range of discounts to reward you as a partner, and cooperations featuring these elements can be a sign of a local travel partner that cares about your growth, and won’t treat you “just like anyone”.

Premade and tested experiences

Local travel agents are often well-traveled, have visited the places, are aware of everything about the destination, and create personalized recommendations for partner travel companies, because they have been there and done that.

How a group tour changed my whole approach to travel

I 've always considered myself a fiercely independent traveler. I've navigated more than 50 countries on my own, and while I have sometimes booked short excursions, usually for a day, it had never occurred to me to book a group tour. That changed when I decided to take two of my children on a family tour with Intrepid Travel .

I had planned on spending our winter break in the Middle East but changed my mind at the last minute due to safety concerns . Because of the abrupt change, I knew I wouldn't have time to plan an itinerary, book hotels and arrange transportation before our departure date. However, I didn’t want to let that stop me from having an adventure. I'm glad I took a chance on a group tour because it changed the way I travel. Here's how.

BEST OF THE BEST: 15 Best Group Travel Companies for Guided Tours

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The trip planning was stress-free

I spent a little time comparing tour companies but quickly honed in on Intrepid. The company offers a variety of itineraries for families at different price points, and a few of my friends had been on its tours and had a good experience. I also liked that Intrepid offers specialized tours for different types of travelers, including family tours .

At first I planned on an "original" style family tour but upgraded to a "comfort" tour, which included more activities and meals along with upgraded accommodations. Although it cost more, the company's 10-day Morocco Family Holiday tour was still within my budget and looked like a good value.

BEFORE YOU GO: The 5 most important questions to ask yourself before booking a tour

Once I committed to a tour, my planning was essentially done. That was a huge relief. I normally spend hours searching for hotels , figuring out some must-do activities in every location along with some off-the-beaten-track attractions, researching transportation options, and gathering restaurant recommendations. Although I often find it's fun, it’s also time-consuming and can become draining for trips that involve several stops.

Even though a group tour was not exactly what I would have planned on my own, Intrepid's Morocco itinerary was fairly close. I thought giving up some control was well worth the trade-off of not having to do all the planning on my own. Because Intrepid uses local teams based at its tour destinations to plan trips, I also hoped having a local involved would bring me to places I never would have found on my own.

SAVE MONEY: Kids stay free at these 10 all-inclusive family resorts

Instead of reading hotel reviews and booking entry tickets, I spent the weeks leading up to my family vacation learning more about Moroccan culture. I knew this would enrich my experience more than figuring out all of the details for a trip abroad to run smoothly. I'm usually a mix of excited and stressed in the week or two leading up to a big trip. This time I was mostly excited, and my stress was at a minimum.

Though I won’t stick exclusively to group tours in the future, this trip taught me to not sweat the small stuff so much. I don’t need to spend so much time finding the perfect hotel or restaurant to have a great trip.

Group trips are fantastic for solo travelers and parents traveling on their own

Before I had a family, I often traveled on my own. Though I enjoyed solo travel , it was lonely at times, even more so when I stopped staying at youth hostels and lost access to the fantastic communities they provide. Now I frequently travel with my two younger children. They are fantastic travel companions, but on longer trips I sometimes find myself longing for adult interaction or an extra pair of hands. Additionally, even though my kids usually get along well, they sometimes get sick of each other in the absence of any other playmates.

TRAVEL WITH TEENS: 10 best vacation ideas for families with teenagers

On my Intrepid trip, I had other adults to talk to throughout the day. That was a refreshing change from my usual experience of going a week or more without speaking to another adult for more than five minutes, usually for transactional matters like checking into a hotel. My kids also quickly made friends with the other children on the trip. Not surprisingly, all of the families on the trip had similar interests and an adventurous spirit. My children and I were the only Americans in the group, and it was interesting learning more about life in New Zealand, Canada and Australia from the other families.

The parents in the group quickly started leaning on one another for support. One mom, also traveling alone with her children, asked me to take one of her daughters on an outing so she could get some one-on-one time with her other child. I asked a different mom to keep an eye on my son while I packed our things for the next day. It was nice not feeling as if I was on my own.

UNIQUE TRIPS: Hate bus tours? These 7 unique guided tours were made for you

This "it takes a village" spirit is something I want to bring with me in my future travels. Although it’s not possible to replicate the experience of traveling with other families, it is possible to seek out connections away from home. For example, on a recent trip, my son wanted to play soccer with local children who lived near our hotel. Instead of rushing him away so we could squeeze in another activity, I let him play. He wound up meeting up with the other kids every night we were there, sharing candy and communicating with an app. The nights playing soccer were a highlight of that trip for him and something I probably would not have let him do before my experience with a group tour.

I appreciated a slower pace

I have serious FOMO and often pack too much into my days when I travel. When I first reviewed the itinerary, I noted right away that it had downtime and even an entire free afternoon built into the trip. Though I know many people enjoy that balance, I was worried I would feel bored and come away feeling as if I had traveled halfway around the world and missed seeing all there is to do.

TRIP REVIEW: Adventures by Disney’s Peru tour is a riveting family adventure

The reality is it’s impossible to do everything. Trying is exhausting and impossible. There is always something left on the to-do list at the end of the trip. It was refreshing to go into a trip not trying to see an entire country in two weeks and being OK with that from the outset.

Though there were a couple of other things I would have liked to have squeezed in, I was very happy with the balance of activities and downtime. Other than all-inclusive family vacations and trips to family resorts , I normally don’t schedule time to just relax while I am traveling. It was really nice to have time to read and play UNO with my kids. I also liked that Intrepid had a couple of optional activities for those of us who didn’t want quite as much downtime as others.

MONEY MATTERS: How much should you tip on a guided tour? All your gratuity questions answered

I do still feel pressure to see and do everything when I travel, but going on a group trip helped me see the value in traveling at a slower pace. Some of my favorite moments from my Intrepid trip happened during scheduled downtime; they gave me and my children time to just enjoy being with one another without the pressures of work and school. It’s a lesson I’ve tried to carry with me as I’ve planned future trips.

Learning from a local is invaluable

One reason I chose Intrepid is the company uses all local guides, and most tours use the same guide throughout the trip. It may sound obvious that learning from locals is the best way to get to know a country, but I had underestimated just how valuable traveling with a local guide would be.

TOUR REVIEW: Adventures by Disney’s South Africa tour is a lesson in culture, history, and beauty

I learned much about Moroccan culture through our tour guide, who was always willing to answer questions about his life and traditions. He even brought us to his family home to meet his parents and niece, which was a very special experience. Aside from being able to share the history of everywhere we visited, I also liked that our guide warned us about scams to watch out for, shared the tipping culture and gave advice on bargaining. He was also helpful when it came to practical matters like finding an ATM.

For future trips, I will be more open to taking guided tours with local guides, even if it’s just for a few hours. I will also make it a point to try to talk to more locals, as long as I can do so without bothering them too much.

Even though it wasn’t what I had originally planned, not only did I have a great experience on my trip with Intrepid, it has also forever changed the way I plan to travel.
