Yellowstone / Grand Teton 4 Day / 3 Night Wildlife Adventure

The tour is very good. We saw a lot of animals and went to a lot of places in the park that people don’t go to and should. But we had a lot of problems communicating with the tour operators to get information about our tour. I would suggest that you check out the other tour companies to see what they offer.

Tim was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful, and always upbeat. Time with the wildlife expert was phenomenal. the tour itself was excellent. The good ranking has to do with communications from Intrepid Travel, which were poor and lead to changed air flights and other headaches.

We experienced more of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with this tour, than we would have on our own. We enjoyed meeting new people, seeing all the sights, and not having to worry about driving and directions. Be prepared to do a lot of walking/hiking - but it is worth it!

The Yellowstone Base Camp tour was excellent. We covered a wide variety of Yellowstone sites from the popular attractions to beautiful but less frequented locations. Our guides, Chris Rapich and Ed Cochran, were great. They provided a lot of information about the park and wildlife, made great meals and did everything they could to make this a memorable experience. I'd travel with them anytime.

Home to more than 2.2 million acres, hundreds of geysers and waterfalls, as well as Yellowstone Lake – the largest high-altitude lake in North America – Yellowstone National Park is a bucket list vacation destination for many travelers. For help planning an unforgettable visit to America's oldest national park, consider a guided tour. In addition to in-the-know locals, these tours also provide hassle-free transportation from nearby cities like Jackson Hole, Wyoming . With the help of traveler and expert input, U.S. News determined that the following tours offer the best ways to take in all that the park has to offer. All of these top-rated excursions feature skillful guides who are eager to share their knowledge of the park's unique geologic features and wildlife.

Note: Because of weather and other factors, the park's roads are not accessible all year, and its entrances in Wyoming and Montana have differing seasonal opening and closing dates, so plan your visit accordingly. Additionally, tour companies' prices typically do not include the park's approximately $20 entry fee for each visitor 16 and older.

BrushBuck Wildlife Tours – Yellowstone Old Faithful, Waterfalls and Wildlife Day Tour

Fees start at $299 per person (with a minimum of two participants), which includes use of binoculars and spotting scopes, as well as a picnic lunch. (Prices do not include the park's entry fee.) Buses depart Jackson Hole daily from April through November starting at 6 a.m. and return about 12 hours later. Note: Tour-takers must be at least 6 years old. Private outings, as well as multiday tours are also available.

Other highlights include Fountain Paint Pot – a hydrothermal feature known as a mud pot, which is less watery than a geyser – as well the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the Grand Prismatic Spring . In addition to enthusing about the scenery and wildlife, tour takers frequently praise the guides for their valuable information and entertaining stories. Pickups from lodging in Jackson and Teton Village occur between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m., and buses return to the starting point between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tours happen daily from May to mid-October. This 45-mile snowmobile tour beside the Yellowstone River takes riders past points of interest, such as Moose Falls, Lewis Canyon and West Thumb Geyser Basin, to Old Faithful. Rides are offered daily from mid-December to mid-March, a period when some of the park's larger animals move down to its lower valleys. Where is Yellowstone National Park?

Most of Yellowstone is located in northwestern Wyoming, but some areas of the park also spread across southern Montana and eastern Idaho.

How do I get to Yellowstone National Park?

You can get to Yellowstone by flying into one of the nearby airports, driving or taking a bus. The closest airports are:

  • Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (north entrance).
  • Yellowstone Regional Airport (east entrance).
  • Jackson Hole Airport (south entrance).

It's also possible to fly to nearby airports like Chicago, Salt Lake City, Utah or Denver, where you can rent a car.

You can access Yellowstone via one of five entry points if you're driving. It takes 4.5 hours to drive from Salt Lake City, 1.5 hours from Idaho Falls, 1.5 hours from Jackson and 1.5 hours from Bozeman.

It's possible to catch a bus from Bozeman in Montana to West Yellowstone all year, and you can also go directly from Idaho to West Yellowstone via bus during the summer months.

There is no direct train into Yellowstone. However, you could catch a train to southeast Idaho, Salt Lake City, Utah and Northern Montana and go from there.

Getting around Yellowstone National Park

There is no public transport within Yellowstone, so you will need a car to get around.

Most roads are closed to vehicles during the winter months due to heavy snowfall, excluding the road to Mammoth Hot Springs, which is maintained for winter travel.

There are five entrance points that loop around the park’s main landmarks and it can take hours to drive between them.

Always check road and park conditions before you set off.

What's the weather like in Yellowstone National Park?

Yellowstone National Park sits within two climate zones: cool temperate and continental. There are four distinct seasons, but the weather can be unpredictable (think four seasons in a day!) and you can't always rely on the forecast.

What to pack for Yellowstone National Park

The weather in Yellowstone can change quickly (in all four seasons), so depending on the time of year you visit, you'll definitely want to pack waterproof layers, a sun hat or warm hat, and good, comfortable footwear.

What animals live in Yellowstone National Park?

Yellowstone is a wildlife lover’s paradise with an abundance of small animals and large predators. Some of the animals you might get to see include:

  • Deer (mule deer, pronghorn deer, white-tailed deer)
  • Bighorn sheep
  • Mountain goats
  • Black bears
  • Grizzly bears
  • Canada lynx
  • River otters

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

And check off the most important landmarks in the area like those in the  Upper Geyser Basin,  location of Old Faithful , and  Midway Geyser Basin with Grand Prismatic Spring  and nearby Norris Geyser Basin .

Plus many other stories, tips and directions that will help enrich your Yellowstone National Park experience.

Suggested Start Location

Gardiner, West Yellowstone, Northeast (Cooke City), East (Cody) & Grand Teton Entrances

Suggested Time

It is recommended to have a minimum one day for each of the Upper and Lower Loops. You can drive the entire Grand Loop in a single day, and the commentary will help with selecting which stops to make. Multiple days to explore all areas of the Park and allow time for wildlife watching, geyser eruptions and other adventures in the Park is best.

Driving Distance

Around 125 miles to complete the whole Grand Loop drive.

WHAT IS YELLOWSTONE FAMOUS FOR?

Yellowstone is the world’s first national park , and awes visitors with its otherworldly bubbling hot pots and steamy geothermal features as well as its spectacular mountain scenery, vast canyons, and abundant wildlife.

WHERE IS YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK?

The majority of Yellowstone National Park is located in the northwestern corner of Wyoming, although a small section of the park is in Montana and Idaho.

Yellowstone Airport in West Yellowstone is the closest airport and only three miles from the park’s West Entrance. The Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is the closest international airport and a little more than an hour to the North Entrance near Gardiner, or a little less than a two-hour drive to the West Entrance in West Yellowstone.

WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH TO VISIT YELLOWSTONE?

Yellowstone National Park is open year-round , although access is limited during the winter months. July and August are by far the most popular times to visit. Fewer crowds make April through May and September and October some of the best times to visit.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED IN YELLOWSTONE?

The absolute minimum amount of time you should allow yourself to do sightseeing in Yellowstone is two days , doing the Upper Loop one day and the Lower Loop on the other day.

We share a couple of possible  Yellowstone itineraries  to help organize your time, but as the commentary plays based on your location, you have ultimate flexibility.

If you have more time, add an extra day in Yellowstone. It’s very worthwhile to allow yourself time in the geyser basin areas to wait for eruptions. Other than Old Faithful, the predicted geysers will often have a 1-2 hour window when the next eruption may occur, so it’s really helpful to have time to be patient and wait for things to happen. The different geysers gush in different ways, so each one has its own style!

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DRIVE AROUND YELLOWSTONE?

If you only have one day you can still enjoy some of the  Yellowstone’s main attractions , but try to stay at least one night inside the park so you can start your sightseeing first thing in the morning. You need a minimum of three full days to see all the main sights and four is ideal.

WHERE SHOULD I STAY WHEN VISITING YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK?

Hotel-style accommodations, rustic cabins, campgrounds, RV parks and luxury suites are all available inside Yellowstone National Park but it can sometimes be difficult to secure reservations, especially during the peak summer season. Luckily there are numerous options for all budgets and tastes right outside Yellowstone.

Read our blog – Where should I stay in Yellowstone  for more details.

HOW OFTEN DO GEYSERS ERUPT IN YELLOWSTONE?

Geysers in Yellowstone fall into two categories of predictable and unpredictable. Some, like Old Faithful are regular, erupting every 90 minutes or so, others, like Steamboat are more erratic, laying dormant for years and suddenly active with a string of eruptions.

So with an erratic schedule how do you plan your geyser watching? The National Park Visitor Centers have latest predictable times listed on their website, in their app (must be on wifi) and in person. And  geysertimes.org  is updated by dedicated “geyser gazers”.

So it’s worthwhile to check in the night before if you want to spend some of your day geyser gazing.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE BEARS AND OTHER WILDLIFE IN YELLOWSTONE?

It’s quite exciting to see the many animals in Yellowstone – both big and small. They are wild, so you need to remember their movements are never guaranteed and you always need to respect the recommended safe distances, keep in your vehicle and never feed them. You can rent spotting scopes, camera lens and binoculars to safety see animals up close.

Suggested areas to spot some of the 67 species of mammals, 300 species of birds, fish and amphibians you’ll find in Yellowstone include;

  • Bison: Hayden and Lamar Valleys in Yellowstone. Around Snake river in Grand Teton.
  • Bears: Grizzles in the Hayden and Lamar Valleys and Black Bears around Tower and Mammoth Wolves: Lamar Valley
  • Pronghorn: Lamar Valley and Gardiner
  • Elk: Gardiner and Grand Teton
  • Moose: Grand Teton on Moose-Wilson Rd

IS MY ENTRY TICKET GOOD FOR BOTH YELLOWSTONE AND GRAND TETON?

Unfortunately each park now collects its own entrance fees so you will need to purchase a separate pass each for Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

Depending on the length of your stay it might be best value to purchase an America the Beautiful Annual Pass which gets you entry into any national park without any time restrictions.

Alert: closures & construction.

Actor Oliver Stark Blasts Homophobic '9-1-1' Fans After Character Comes Out

Wild raccoon goes on the attack at hersheypark, tries biting people, raccoon rampage furry assailant goes on attack ... bites at theme park goers.

A feisty raccoon crashed into a Pennsylvania theme park last week and caused utter chaos by attacking innocent bystanders -- and TMZ's got video of the whole thing.

The wild critter was looking pretty damn fierce Friday at Hersheypark -- opening day for the year, BTW -- where it terrorized a group of waiting riders who were in line for the SooperDooperLooper coaster  ... even biting a young girl and running off with her shoe!

Check out the clip ... it's pure pandemonium, and yes -- damn scary. Panicked screams are heard amid the frenzy as terrified onlookers scramble to get the hell away from this beast.

We're told others might've possibly been bitten too ... which wasn't captured on camera, although it's unclear if anyone was seriously hurt. Still, you can tell how freaked out everyone was by this -- especially when the raccoon came back for seconds, so to speak.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

After doing a couple laps ... the raccoon eventually scurried off without issue. It goes without saying, raccoon run-ins are no joke ... as they're primary carriers of rabies, which can obviously spread to humans. So far, there's no indication this particular raccoon was rabid.

There were some geese on the other side of the attraction, and they were hooting and hollering too over the ruckus. Pretty hectic to say the least.

Hersheypark tells TMZ this is their first time dealing with anything of this nature in the parks over 100 years of operation, noting the park is surrounded by nature. With that said, Hersheypark says public and safety health officials on the property responded quickly to render necessary care to two people who were directly impacted by this, and those two were transported to the hospital out of precaution.

They add ... the raccoon in this story hasn't been captured -- and more importantly, it hasn't been back since.

Shocked Yellowstone guide catches clueless tourist sticking hand in geyser

A tour guide at Yellowstone National Park has shared photos of a visitor putting his hand in a geyser at Black Sand Basin as a warning to others, and a reminder to take care around geothermal features.

"Guy puts a hand in spouter at Black Sand Basin," wrote Amanda Eisenberg , whose pictures were shared via Instagram account TouronsOfYellowstone this week. "I've been a guide for over a year. I generally don't warn people anymore because most of the time they just tell me to shove it, but I warned this guy. He was walking all over the basin."

Black Sand Basin takes its name and color from deposits of volcanic glass (obsidian), and is the location of several of Yellowstone's most spectacular springs and pools, including Emerald Pool, Rainbow Pool, Sunset Lake, and Cliff Geyser. It's one of the park's biggest attractions, but visitors are warned to stick to trails and boardwalks for their own safety.

A post shared by TouronsOfYellowstone (@touronsofyellowstone) A photo posted by on

The ground around geothermal features is often only a thin crust over scalding groundwater, and people have suffered severe burns after accidentally falling in.

"Hot springs have injured or killed more people in Yellowstone than any other natural feature," says the National Park Service . "Keep your children close and don’t let them run."

Trespassing in these areas is a crime, and missing the signs isn't an excuse, as actor Pierce Brosnan discovered earlier this year. The James Bond actor was spotted walking in a prohibited area near Mammoth Terraces in January, and posted photos of himself there on social media.

Brosnan initially pleaded not guilty , but later changed his plea and was fined a total of $1,500 for what he called an "impulsive mistake".

"I deeply regret my transgression and offer my heartfelt apologies to all for trespassing in this sensitive area," he wrote on Instagram. "Yellowstone and all our National Parks are to be cared for and preserved for all to enjoy."

Mother sentenced for leaving newborn in park to die more than 20 years ago

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WTKR) - A Virginia mother who left her newborn son in a park to die 21 years ago is finally facing justice.

A judge sentenced Melissa Chrisman to 32 years in prison Friday morning roughly five months after she pleaded guilty to abandoning her infant son in a Chesapeake park in 2003, leading to his death from hypothermia.

Chrisman was emotional in court, crying while a friend and her mother testified in her defense, both saying she was a good person and a good mother. She has two children, one born in 2001 and the other in 2004.

Detectives named the newborn “Baby Daniel” after he was found dead with his umbilical cord still attached at Western Branch Park on January 17, 2003. He was wrapped in two blankets and wearing an oversized diaper.

Ed Jones was an employee with Chesapeake Parks and Recreation at the time.

“Take a baby and throw a couple of blankets around it and leave it in the woods. There’s no excuse for that,” he said in 2020.

Police say Baby Daniel froze to death and was found by an 11-year-old boy named Rafael Cabrera. That boy, now grown, was seen getting emotional in a cold case video created by police in 2020.

“That’s something that shouldn’t happen to anybody,” Cabrera said.

Detectives spent nearly two decades searching for answers in Baby Daniel’s death. It wasn’t until January 2020 that Chrisman was arrested after her DNA came up as a match to the crime. Police say her DNA was gathered because of other convictions.

Chrisman pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October 2023. In court, the commonwealth’s attorney asked the judge for the maximum sentence of 32 years, which he granted Friday.

“There is nothing more precious than the innocence of a newborn child,” the judge said. “You stole a life you had no power to take.”

Before the sentencing, Chrisman told the judge, “I’m sorry for all of this.”

Jeremy Clarkson "Takes Inspiration From Kevin Costner's Yellowstone Rancher John Dutton"

Jeremy Clarkson says he is bowed, but not beaten, by the local government bureaucracy he encounters as a farmer, but is inspired to fight by Kevin Costner's character in Yellowstone .

The former Grand Tour presenter, whose hit Amazon Video show Clarkson's Farm will return for a third series on May 3, told The Times newspaper he's been watching the Paramount+ drama Yellowstone and is taking his cue to challenge officialdom from Costner's character of rancher John Dutton:

"I've been watching  Yellowstone . When someone displeases them, they murder them, take them across the state line and throw them in a ravine. I've been looking at that scene a lot."

Clarkson's turn to farming has seen a freshly successful chapter in his long TV career. The first series was commissioned for a single season in 2019 but went on to become the UK's most watched Amazon original show. The Times reports that the second season premiere won 4.3million viewers.

Season two saw the presenter in dispute with his local West Oxfordshire district council, which refused his application to build a car park for his farm shop. Recently, however, in a change dubbed "Clarkson's Law", the UK government have loosened rules so that farmers can change existing buildings without council permission.

Clarkson told the newspaper: "If you apply for a grant you have to fill in 2,000 forms and wait for 2,000 years for a man to come in a rented Vauxhall and tell you that you must stop what you're doing because he has found a bat or some moss."
