Marcus Goguen’s Historic Win at 2024 Freeride World Tour in Verbier: The Double Drop That Redefined Freeride Skiing

freeride world tour marcus goguen

This is,  respectfully , insane.

Marcus Goguen won at the FWT Event in Verbier on Friday, (the 2024  YETI Xtreme, if you care.)This mindblowing run is what sealed the deal. Marcus's line starts calm enough, as he drops into a very exposed face and picks his way through rocks. He pops a tasty 360 off a big cliff drop, then heads for previously uncharted territory. Carving a brand new line in the day's competition, it's the double drop he stomps that will be remembered for generations. Stick around for the double drop, I promise you it is well worth it.

Happily, we can enjoy Marcus's POV of this one for repeated viewing. Thanks to this 19-year-old menace, we just witnessed a  fateful day in freeride history.

We love it when our community helps us source the sickest, most hilarious or irreverent stories and videos out there. Whether it’s your own POV or something you and your BFF put together, TGR wants to see it. Follow us on  Instagram  and share your vids via DM or email  [email protected] .

[Freeride World Tour 2023] Kicking Horse, BC – Stop Three Recap

freeride world tour marcus goguen

Kicking Horse DELIVERED! Similar to stop number one of the 2023 Freeride World Tour, the heavily anticipated Golden, British Columbia venue was coated in a fresh blanket of snow and accompanied by blue skies over head. While much of Canada has seen below average snow falls this year, the faucet was turned on in advance this past week, and the riders were all the more thankful for it. This stop saw some see it to believe it type of action, and with freeride veteran Sam Smoothy making a return, this time in the commentators box, the full replay is well worth the watch. However if you don’t have an hour or two to spare, we’ve compiled a comprehensive run down of the Ski Men’s and Women’s fields complete with results, notable highlights, videos and captivating photos from the day.

In the Ski Women’s field there was an abundance of speed and style; more than enough to go around. The day belonged to the French phenom Megane Betend. The 28 year old rookie had a relatively slow start at the first two stops of the year, finishing 10th and 5th. However, she came out of the gate in Golden ready to rumble. Dropping sixth in her field, behind both Men’s Ski and Snowboard posed significant challenges. With the course significantly tracked it was up to Megane to find a crafty line through, and find she did. She powered her way with large, clean turns into the trees and rocks halfway down her run, and proceeded to point herself off an incredible three cliffs in a row. The wild triple air and incredible control earned her a mighty score of 82.00. While no one else in the Ski Women’s field would be able to achieve such top tier appraisal from the judges, some came very close.

Coming in second, third, and fourth on the podium were Elisabeth Gerritzen, Addison Rafford, and Justine Dufour-Lapointe, respectively, with the rankings separated by no more than two points each! It’s so surprise that with scores this close the riding from all three was as technical and impressive as it gets. We saw incredible airs from each, with Elisabeth taking an impressive and very similar air to Megane. Justine might have had the highlight of the day, as she ventured into a low traffic zone and stomped a massive cliff under the pressure of a tricky run in and sliding snow to her right. With her third place finish, Addison Rafford secured the top spot in the field heading into the finals.

“I knew I would have to finish first or second to qualify for the finals, so I said to myself, ‘go big or go home!’ I am stoked that it worked.” – Megane Betend

In the Ski Men’s field , this may have been the biggest highlight filled stop of the tour. We saw Xander Guldman toss a fiesty screamin’ seaman 3, Max Hitzig with arguably the biggest and most incredible looking backflip ever seen in the Freeride World Tour, Finn Bilous with a laid out and nearly corked 3, and the resident Canadian Marcus Goguen holding on to a jaw droping line that included a massive 360 and a backflip. These few highlights are just the tip of the iceberg, as the performance by these riders was mostly impeccable. ( Huge shoutout to Leif Mumma for even attempting to fly off the iconic Logan Pehota hit with such low tide and walking away in one piece .) Among all this glorious ripping, there were however those who stood victorious. Max Hitzig was alone atop the podium thanks to his practically flawless GIGANTIC backflip off the pyramid feature lower down on the face. His run also included a solid 3 from the cornice and a stable air at high speed through a very technical section. This all amassed him a near perfect score of 97.67 from the judges.

In second was the young stunner Marcus Goguen showing the visitors how a true Tim Hortons connoisseur lays it down. His run was maybe the quickest of the day, but it left our friends in the commentary booth laughing with astonishment. Lacing a step down 3 from the top cornice, holding on as he rocketed into the following chute and pinning it to his left into a fast thinking backflip off an untouched cliff. It was speed, style, and grace all rolled into one. Valentin Rainer stamped his ticket to the FWT finals with a third place finish. He was guaranteed to make the cut heading into the event, but that didn’t stop him from going all out. His creative line took him all over the hill, as he was able to hang onto a gutsy transfer air and a large backflip in the following section.

“I wasn’t sure if it [the backflip] was going to work. I saw Yu Sasaki send the pyramid cliff three years ago, which is why I went for it today. I’m so stoked!” – Max Hitzig

With stop three in the books, the FWT Finals Cut has been finalized. Moving on are the top 5 women and top 11 men, as they’ll get a chance for the title in the finals in Fieberbrunn and Verbier.

Marcus Goguen of Whistler stands proudly atop the podium after winning the 2023 Freeride Junior World Championships.

Marcus Goguen continues to make his presence known on the freeride scene.

The Whistlerite became the new Freeride Junior World Championships (FJWC) king on Jan. 24 in Kappl, Austria as he distinguished himself in the men's ski category. He stormed out of the gates with two high-amplitude clean airs, completing the top section in short order. Fans won't soon forget his entry into the ‘halfpipe’ feature as he threw down a massive corked three. Goguen proceeded to finish his run by hurling himself off two more big cliffs with ease. Judges awarded him 1300 big points that vaulted him atop the podium.

Tiemo Rolshoven of Germany (1020 points) and Wyatt Gentry (840 points) of the United States placed second and third, respectively, each with solid runs of their own down Kappl's Quellspitze face.

At 18 years old, Goguen has been having a notable season so far. Last November, he co-starred in a snowsports film called  Daymaker,   the latest production by Warren Miller Entertainment.

On the women's ski side, Zoé Delzoppo of France showed technique and style throughout her run to claim the win. Her skiing looked fluid and controlled, starting with an air at the top of the course, before she shredded the halfpipe and sent two airs deep in a row with little hesitation, earning 1300 points. Fellow French contender Mila De Le Rue, daughter of freeride legend Xavier De Le Rue, finished in second place with 1020 points. Tia Schenk of the United States rounded out the podium with 840 points in third.

This is the 11th edition of the FJWC and the sixth to take place in Kappl. Full results are available on the Freeride Word Tour website.

24 Nov Freeride

When 18-year-old Canadian freeskier Marcus Goguen stood in the starting gate at last year’s Freeride World Tour stop in Kicking Horse, British Columbia, many spectators held their breaths. The reigning Freeride Junior World Tour champion was coming off a ninth-place finish at his professional debut in Spain a few weeks earlier and now was on his home turf, ready to put down what he hoped would be a winning run.

Less than a minute later, after spinning a massive 360 and throwing a huge backflip off a rocky cliff, Goguen was in first place. He held on for a second-place finish and came in ninth overall in the final season rankings, the youngest in a field of older, more experienced skiers. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better, honestly,” Goguen says. “I never expected to get on the tour as an 18-year-old.”

freeride world tour marcus goguen

A skier approaches a feature on the Toilet Bowl run at a freeride competition at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Goguen, now 19, honed his skills by competing in junior competitions through the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association (IFSA), a worldwide organization dedicated to promoting the sport of freeriding — basically skiing or snowboarding down from the top of a mountain on natural, ungroomed terrain. With a maximum score of 100, athletes earn points based on line choice, technique, control, fluidity, air, and style. The IFSA sanctions events for athletes ages 12 to 18; Goguen won the Junior World Championships in 2023 at age 18 before he turned pro.

The Rocky Mountains are home to a growing number of junior freeriders. Thousands of young athletes compete each year at venues like Jackson Hole, Big Sky, Grand Targhee, Whitefish Mountain, Bridger Bowl, Schweitzer Mountain, and more. Each competitor has the same dream as Goguen: to make it to the Freeride World Tour and stand among the world’s elite professional skiers and snowboarders in a sport that is quickly becoming one of the most popular and exciting events on snow.

Most skiers remember Shane McConkey as a free-spirited, extreme-skiing pioneer with a wild and often silly side. After a stint on the pro mogul tour, McConkey won the North American Freeskiing Championship in 1995 and never looked back. His stories from the early days are those of legends, unbelievable tales of mind-boggling feats on snow, many of which had never been done before. McConkey, who died in 2009 during a BASE-jumping accident, is also credited with creating the first reverse-camber powder ski, revolutionizing and revitalizing the ski industry along with it. McConkey wanted freeskiing to be taken seriously, so he founded the International Freeskiers Association in 1996 to sanction adult competitions around the globe. Today, McConkey’s vision lives on and has evolved into the IFSA, which added junior events for the 2012 season and now governs more than 3,500 young athletes between the ages of 12 and 18, hailing from places all around the world.

The nonprofit IFSA sanctions events in North and South America, although each participating resort runs its own competition. For the 2023 season, which culminated in April, there were 97 junior events — a tremendous increase from the first season 11 years ago when there were just 16 competitions. Most are held in the western U.S. and Canada, but a few occur at some of the bigger East Coast ski areas and in South America during the summer. Resorts that host these competitions — separated into regional- and national-level events — are generally big mountains known for steep, difficult terrain. Athletes earn points throughout the season, hoping to snag a spot in the North American Junior Championships held in April at a different resort each year.

Wallace Casper, head coach of Montana’s Big Sky Ski Education Foundation’s Freeride Team, has seen firsthand how the sport has exploded around the region. He chalks it up to one word: fun.

“Freeride is awesome because the sport is basically a combination of many different disciplines of skiing and snowboarding,” Casper says. “An athlete needs alpine, mogul, and freestyle skills to succeed. One of the best parts is that athletes get to choose their path down the mountain, allowing for a lot of creativity. It’s just super fun.”

Casper’s Big Sky-based team has had a lot of success over the past few years. During the 2023 season, Kennedy Cochenour placed first and Kira Livernois placed fourth in the 12- to 14-year-old girl’s category. Hayes Livernois finished second in the 15- to 18-year-old boy’s skiing category, and Elijah Singer took first place in the 15- to 18-year-old boy’s snowboarding division.

Casper, who competed in IFSA junior events while growing up in Utah and is also IFSA’s northern regional director, is proud of the Big Sky crew’s accomplishments. “Our team has produced some of the best athletes in the country over the past few seasons,” he says. “It’s awesome to watch the kids develop their skills over the years they are with us.”

Further south in Jackson Hole, a region home to well-known freeriders like Travis Rice, Tim Durtschi, and Lynsey Dyer, there is a similar sentiment from Collin Rehm, the freeride program director for the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club. “The thing that separates freeride kids from the rest is how much fun they’re having while doing it,” he says. “There’s so much momentum right now, and the kids are really excited about it.”

It’s no surprise that the sport is seeing explosive growth with younger skiers and riders. It combines the freestyle elements seen in resort terrain parks (spins, grabs, big airs) with the kind of skiing they do with their friends. Although freeride is technically an individual sport, it’s built on the idea of community and teamwork. “Freeride is a discipline that adds just enough structure so that the athletes can push themselves and see real results and improvement,” Rehm says. “The kids are always giving each other information about conditions and line choice and are hyping each other up in the start gate. Everybody wants to see everybody else do their best, and while it’s still competitive, the success of one athlete is felt by the whole community.”

Freeride snowboarder Harrison Hoffman, 16, rides for the Bridger Bowl Freeride Team near Bozeman, Montana, and finished fifth overall last season. Hoffman attributes the sport’s rise in popularity to the ski film industry and professional riders inspiring younger generations to treat the entire mountain as a terrain park. “Freeride offers a unique outlet for kids to be as creative as they can possibly be,” says Hoffman. “There’s really no limit to what you can do in this sport, and it is truly something you cannot experience in any other ski or snowboard discipline.”

Today, junior freeriders have even more to look forward to with the recent acquisition of the Free-ride World Tour (FWT) by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS). FIS is the highest governing body for skiing and snowboarding — from alpine and Nordic to big air and moguls — and the merger will help the freeride sport gain a future place in the Winter Olympics. IFSA will remain an independent organization and continue to develop junior freeriders, acting as a pipeline to the FWT.

“Integrating FWT will see FIS add one of the most exciting, dynamic winter sports competition formats to its portfolio,” said FIS president Johan Eliasch in a press release after the acquisition was announced in 2022. “This is truly a win-win for all parties as FIS can bring massive growth potential to the FWT, providing the chance to develop on a broader stage. FWT brings a highly professional tour that offers breathtaking action and an entirely new element of skiing and snowboarding to FIS.”

As a response to these changes, the Big Sky Ski Education Foundation recently started a program for athletes over the age of 18 who have grown out of the junior events but still want coaching to try and qualify for the adult FWT competitions. Casper feels that these changes will offer more opportunities for his young athletes. “The [merger] will bring a lot of exposure to the sport,” he says. “Freeride is heading toward the Olympics.”

With all of this growth, the 2024 winter will see more freeride events around the region than ever before. Resorts are eager to capture the opportunities that hosting these competitions can bring. The events often draw hundreds of participants — mostly families — who typically stay for several days. They also help put the resorts on the map in the freeride community, making them a must-stop for intrepid skiers and snowboarders who want the thrill of skiing steep alpine faces. The competitions make for excellent spectating, too, and just an all-around good vibe on the mountain.

“The growth of junior freeride skiing has had a very positive impact on the resort, both from a community standpoint as well as a spectator opportunity,” says Liv Grubaugh, senior manager of brand experience at Big Sky Resort. “We are always honored to host both regional and national competitions and are excited by the energy that the athletes and their families bring to the mountain.”

Casper echoes these sentiments, pointing out that the sport’s origins are all about having fun within a close-knit community of skiers and riders.

“Some of the best memories I’ve had at [freeride] events have been outside the competition itself,” he says. “Meeting incredible skiers from all around the country and shredding with them before and after the competition is sometimes the best part of the trip. I’ve made dozens of lifelong friends through the sport, and I hope the kids I coach can have the same experience.”

18-Year-Old Lands INSANE Back-To-Back-To-Back Airs For Second Place At FWT Kicking Horse

You know what’s a great way to convince yourself to stay on a treadmill for 55 minutes? Watch the Freeride World Tour stop at Kicking Horse live while running/walking/whatever. I know this, of course, because that’s exactly what I was doing while the competition was going on this year.

I’m sure if anyone was watching me run, they probably would have gotten a good laugh out of the faces I was making in reaction to the  INSANE  things then went down during the men’s skiing (there was insane stuff in every category, that’s just the one I watched on the treadmill…)

20-year-old Max Hitzig took first place after sending a MASSIVE   backflip , and he definitely deserved the win, but the run that took my breath away the most (and caused me to have the best reaction for unknowing onlookers at the gym) has to be 18-year-old Marcus Goguen ‘s second place run.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by FIS Freeride World Tour (@freerideworldtour)

Back to back to back airs (with one little bounce thrown in the middle, so maybe back to back to back to back). Clean 360, little bounce, big air, quick readjustment,  HUGE backflip. All with a maximum of 3 seconds touching snow in between. So quick, so rowdy, so incredible.

With Hitzig only 20-years-old and Goguen only 18, I think the future of freeride competitions is looking  pretty  solid…

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
