What you should know about your nose

Mucus is naturally produced in the nose and its role is to trap foreign particles (dust, viruses and bacteria) and keep them from getting into the lungs. Mucus is transported from the front of the nose and from within the sinuses by tiny microscopic hairs called "cilia" which sweep the mucus to the back of the throat from where it is swallowed.

The acid environment in the stomach then helps to kill unwanted bacteria and viruses. This is an important function of the body's immune system and it helps to maintain good health.

What happens when the mucus layer becomes dry?

When mucus dries out it becomes thicker and the cilia hairs cannot function as well as they should. Mucus may become crusty causing a feeling of nasal discomfort.

Travelling in low humidity and cool environments

Spending prolonged periods of time in low humidity and cool environments (such as aircraft cabins, buses, trains and hotels with air conditioning) has been shown to dry nasal mucus and slow the normal movement of mucus. This can result in an impaired immune function and travellers getting colds more easily than they would otherwise do.

What is FLO Travel Nasal Spray?

FLO Travel Nasal Spray is a sterile, preservative free, non-stinging saline spray containing Carrageenan 1.6mg /ml. It is aclear, colourless and odourless solution.

Carrageenan is an extract derived from marine red algae. Carrageenan binds effectively to mucus and strongly attracts water. This helps keep the nasal tissues moist to prevent and relieve symptoms of nasal crusting and discomfort that can be experienced on long distance flights, and importantly also helps nasal tissue to function normally to keep you healthy.

In the event of contracting a cold, Carrageenan has been shown to help reduce the length of time cold symptoms are experienced. This can be an added advantage when travelling.

Name of the medicine

Carrageenan in sterile physiological saline.

Description

Flo Travel nasal spray contains 1.6 mg/mL of carrageenan in sterile physiological saline.

Pharmacology

Carrageenan is an extract of red seaweed (Chondrus crispus) and consists of both iota and kappa forms. Both these types of carrageenan have gelling properties and have been used for many years in the food industry. Carrageenan is strongly anionic which accounts for its mucoadhesive properties. It is also very hygroscopic and strongly retains water. Iota carrageenans have been shown to have antiviral properties against common cold viruses (rhinovirus, corona virus and influenza A) 1,2 . They have been shown to shorten the duration of colds, to reduce the severity of symptoms and also the period of viral shedding. Environments which are kept cool to cold and which have a low humidity are challenging to nasal mucosal function. Mucus has been demonstrated to thicken and cilial beat frequency to decrease. As a result mucociliary transport is delayed 3 . This may have deleterious effects on the antimicrobial efficacy of the upper airway. Thickened mucus can become crusty and uncomfortable for people exposed to these environments for prolonged periods of time. With the added microbial pressures of close confines with other passengers or workers viral infections may be experienced more frequently. As a solution to address these issues, carrageenan offers topical protection for nasal mucosa as well as the added benefits of antiviral properties.

Indications

Flo Travel is indicated for the prevention and relief of nasal crusting and dryness when there is prolonged exposure to cold and low humidity environments. These are experienced on aeroplane journeys, in office and hotel environments and wherever air conditioning is in constant use. It may also be used to shorten the duration and severity of common cold symptoms.

Contraindications

1. Sensitivity to any of the ingredients (carrageenans or saline solutions). 2. Nasal congestion or irritation associated with use of Flo Travel. 3. If any of the tamper evident seals are missing or show evidence of tampering.

Hayfever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) symptoms may last for weeks or several months, depending on which plant pollen you are allergic to, where you live and even the weather.

Pollen can be difficult to avoid, so if you are allergic to more than one type of pollen or pollen from plants that produce pollen throughout the year, then you may have hayfever symptoms most of the time.

Hayfever  is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen. It is not contagious, so you cannot ‘catch’ hayfever from someone else.

Some of your hayfever symptoms may overlap with other conditions, such as  colds and flu  that are infectious and can be passed on from person to person.

Hayfever season in Australia varies depending on where you live and the type of pollen you are allergic to.

  • For example: Tree pollen levels are usually high in late winter to early spring1e and grass pollen is around from August.
  • Pollen from allergenic grasses in the south of Australia usually peak during October to December, while in warmer northern areas grasses flower from January to March.

An allergy is where a person reacts to substances (allergens)in the environment that are harmless to most other people. The term ‘allergies’ covers a broad range of reactions to various allergens such as dust mites, pets, pollen, insects as well as some foods and medications.

Hayfever (seasonal allergic rhinitis)  is the common name for a form of allergic rhinitis and is a specific type of allergic reaction caused by pollen and other seasonal allergens.

Blocked Nose

A blocked nose may last for only a few days or it may be a long-term problem, depending on the cause.

A blocked nose is often a symptom of an infection such as a  cold , in which case, it will usually clear up in a few days.

If your blocked nose is caused by  hayfever , it may last for a few weeks or months depending on which pollen type or other allergen you are allergic to.

You should talk to your doctor if your blocked nose lasts longer than 1-2 weeks, you have other symptoms such as a fever or you are feeling very unwell.

There are several reasons why you may get a blocked nose when you go to sleep. Some may be easily remedied while others you may need to talk to your healthcare provider about.

  • A blocked nose can be caused by the tissues in your nasal cavity becoming swollen due to inflammation and the build-up of fluid, which can often become worse when lying down.
  • Lying flat may also make it hard for excess mucus to drain away
  • The position you sleep in may also reduce the air flowing through your nose.

Preservative free, non-medicated saline drops or sprays are a simple way to help clear a blocked nose:

For newborns, babies and toddlers, using  FLO Baby Saline Drops  or  FLO Baby Saline Spray  helps quickly and gently clear nasal congestion.

For older children there’s  FLO Kids Saline Spray  to help thin mucus and make it easier to blow out.

A sinus infection, or  sinusitis , can be caused by a number of things including bacterial infections, viral infections such as  cold and flu  or  allergies .

A sinus infection, or sinusitis , can be caused by a number of things including bacterial infections, viral infections such as cold and flu or allergies – but once sinusitis develops, it is not contagious and cannot spread to other people.

A sinus infection (sinusitis)usually clears up after about 2-3 weeks.

Talk to your doctor if your  sinusitis symptoms  have not started to improve after about 7-10 days or they are getting worse.

It is also a good idea to talk to your doctor if you keep getting sinus infections.

A  runny nose  can have a number of causes and so can last for different amounts of time.

For example, you can often get a runny nose when you have a viral infection such as a  cold . In which case, your runny nose may last up to 2 weeks.

If your runny nose is caused by an allergy such as  hayfever  it may last longer – anywhere from a few weeks to months depending on what you are allergic to.

Teething in babies is not usually associated with illness, but often gets blamed for a variety of problems, including a runny nose.

If your child has a runny nose and is also teething, talk to your doctor or Maternal and Child Health Nurse about the possible causes.

Cold and Flu

There are lots of different cold and flu medicines readily available from your local pharmacy or supermarket.1a These medicines are designed to help relieve your cold and flu symptoms and can contain more than one active ingredient, such as a decongestant for a blocked nose and a pain reliever.

There are also different kinds of nasal sprays, so it’s important to know which one you’re using. For example, there are non-medicated saline nasal sprays and medicated sprays (such as those containing a decongestant, steroid or antihistamine). Always check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking any medication as some products may not be suitable to be taken together.

When you have a cold, you will generally be contagious for up to 2 weeks. This includes a few days before any of the symptoms appear, right up until they all go.

You’re most likely to spread a cold during the first 2 to 3 days when your symptoms are at their worst.

FLO Baby Saline Nasal Spray is designed to be quick and easy to use:

  • Ensure your baby is comfortable and well supported Hold the nostril underneath your baby’s nostril and spray
  • It can be sprayed at any angle (even upside down), so you can use it in any position you and your baby feel comfortable with, including lying down, sitting or when being held

DO NOT insert the nozzle into your child’s nostril as any sudden head movement may cause an injury.

What is the difference between FLO Baby Saline Drops and FLO Baby Saline Spray?

  • FLO Baby Saline Drops  allows you to quickly and gently drop the required amount of saline into your baby’s nostril.
  • FLO Baby Saline Nasal Spray  gently sprays the saline solution into the baby’s nostril from any angle, even upside down.
  • If baby’s nose is blocked or congested, then use FLO Baby drops or Spray 5-10 minutes before feeding. Use them at any time of the day or night if nasal congestion is causing baby to be unsettled.

FLO Baby Saline Drop

FLO Baby Saline Nasal Drops are designed to be quick and easy to use:

  • Ensure your baby is comfortably supported in your arms or lying on their back (you can use a small pillow to help support them) with their head titled back
  • Hold the nozzle underneath your baby’s nostril and drop the required amount of saline into each nostril

Gentle, preservative free, non-medicated FLO Baby Saline Nasal Drops can be used as often as needed.

FLO Kids Saline Spray

Some nasal sprays such as  FLO Kids Saline Nasal Spray  and  FLO Baby Saline Spray  are specifically designed for children.

With its specially designed pump system, FLO Kids and FLO Baby Saline Nasal Sprays can be administered at any angle – making treating your child quick and easy.

FLO Saline Plus

An isotonic saline nasal spray – such as  FLO Saline Plus  and  FLO Nasal Mist – contains a saline solution (a mixture of salt and water) that is at the same concentration as the fluids in your body.

Isotonic saline nasal sprays are generally preferred as they may be less irritating than stronger (hypertonic) solutions to sensitive nasal tissues, particularly in children.

FLO Rapid Relief

When using  FLO Rapid Relief decongestant  nasal spray:

  • Spray once into each nostril
  • 2-3 times each day if needed
  • Unless advised by your doctor or pharmacist, DO NOT use the spray for more than 3 days at a time.
  • FLO Rapid Relief is suitable for adults and children over 12 years

FLO Nasal Mist  is a non-medicated product that provides a continuous spray of saline to gently relieve a blocked (congested) nose. It does not contain a decongestant.

Saline nasal sprays and washes work by thinning and washing out excess mucus and irritants that can cause a blocked nose and other nasal symptoms triggered by  allergies  and  infections .

FLO Rapid Relief  contains an effective decongestant (called xylometazoline hydrochloride) to help quickly clear a  blocked  or  runny nose and provides relief for up to 10 hours after use. Do not use for more than 3 days at a time, unless advised by a doctor or pharmacist to do so.

FLO Nasal Mist contains a preservative free, non-medicated saline solution that is gentle enough to use every day or as often as needed.

EZE ALLERGY

There are different kinds of nasal sprays, so it’s important to know which one you’re using and always read and follow the instructions for use.

EZE-ALLERGY  is an antihistamine nasal spray that can be used by adults and children over 5 years of age for the relief of  hayfever symptoms . Due to its effectiveness, you need only spray once in each nostril during a 12 hour period and it works within 15 minutes. You should not use the product continuously for more than 6 months.

Using a non-medicated saline nasal spray or wash, such as  FLO Saline Plus  for adults and  FLO Baby Saline Spray  or  FLO Kids Saline Spray  for children, regularly can also help with allergy symptoms and they can be used as often as needed.

EZE-ALLERGY antihistamine nasal spray is fast acting and long lasting.

EZE-ALLERGY provides effective relief from allergy symptoms such as a runny nose , sneezing , itching or blocked nose within 15 mins and lasts up to 12 hours.

Adults and children over 2 years of age can use FLO Travel Nasal Spray before, during and after travelling (or more frequently if required) to aid natural nasal immunity against inhaled bacteria, cold viruses and irritants.

  • Adults and children over 12 years of age can use up to 2 sprays per nostril, 3 times a day
  • Children between 2 and 12 years of age should only be given 1 spray per nostril, up to 3 times

Post Operative Kit

Your healthcare provider will advise you on how often and how long you should rinse your sinuses after having your surgery. Generally, this will mean rinsing your nose a few times a day until any swelling has gone down.

You can use  FLO Post Operative  nasal and sinus wash twice daily or as directed by your healthcare professional.

FLO Post Operative is a preservative-free, non-medicated saline wash and can be used more often if required and directed by your healthcare professional.

FLO Post Operative can be used at any time of day, except during the hour before you go to bed

When you have sinus surgery, the tissues in your nose or sinuses react by swelling up. This usually leads to a badly blocked (congested) nose in the 2-3 weeks after your surgery.

Your healthcare provider will usually ask you to use a sinus wash – such as FLO Post Operative until the swelling goes down.

FLO CRS Starter Kit and Refill

Sinus congestion can be caused by a number of factors including:

  • Bacterial or viral infections such as a  cold and flu
  • Sinus infections (sinusitis)   can cause swelling of the sinus tissues leaving you feeling blocked or congested
  • Allergic reactions  to pollen, dust or other airborne allergens can cause swelling and congestion in the nose and sinuses.

FLO CRS has xylitol and a low sodium and potassium formula to help provide cleansing relief for sinus infections (sinusitis) that does not interfere with factors in the nose which are needed for nasal immunity. Both FLO CRS and FLO Sinus Care are:

  • Preservative-free
  • Non-medicated
  • Isotonic saline solutions

FLO CRS  has been formulated with a low salt (sodium and potassium) content to help ensure that it does not interfere with the factors in the nose which are needed for nasal immunity. For more information about the benefits of FLO CRS, please contact your doctor.

FLO CRS is a preservative free, non-medicated saline wash that is gentle enough to be used daily:

  • Use up to three times daily or as directed by your healthcare professional
  • FLO CRS can be used at any time of day, except within an hour before bed

FLO Sinus Care Starter Kit and Refill

  • FLO Sinus Care can be used by adults and children 4 years of age or older
  • Children should only use FLO Sinus Care under the supervision of an adult.

  • Dry with a clean paper towel
  • Firmly wipe all components using either a large alcohol swab or a clean paper towel which has been well moistened with isopropyl alcohol (available from pharmacies)

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
