Dubai Creek's PGA Professional beats rainfall to make first Challenge Tour start

One Dubai-based club pro had a last-minute dash to compete at the Abu Dhabi Challenge at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club after his clubs got stuck in his flood-stricken car.

Tom Ogilvie, who is a PGA Professional at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, is making his Challenge Tour debut this week after winning the Emirates PGA Play-Offs to secure an invitation into the seventh event on the Road to Mallorca schedule.

But that dream of rubbing shoulders with DP World Tour winners and the game’s rising stars was nearly left in tatters when the UAE saw record rainfall fall on the country earlier this week.

“I tried to get up here yesterday but the rain in Dubai was horrendous,” said Ogilvie.

“I only managed to get my clubs out of my car last night as there was flooding all around it, so it was a proper last-minute job.

“Got up here late last night, then straight onto the tee his morning.”

Tom Ogilvie

So, you didn’t manage to play a practice round?

“No, straight into the tournament!” he replied.

Despite not having a chance to play the course prior to the tournament starting, the Scotsman shot a commendable 74 in today’s opening round, where he played alongside Danish duo Søren Brohold Lind and Sebastian Friedchsen.

That three-ball ensured Ogilvie got a front row seat to the talent that emerges from the Challenge Tour, with Friedchsen carding a sublime bogey-free 63, carding seven bogeys in the process.

“It just sounds different when they (Challenge Tour regulars) hit it,” said Ogilvie.

“Around the green and stuff, it’s something I look at and know that’s where I need to improve. The boys I played with today were phenomenal, especially Seb, he made seven under look very easy!”

While there is plenty of work to be done if Ogilvie is to make the weekend on his first Challenge Tour start, he remains determined to enjoy the experience of going head-to-head with the next generation of golf stars.

“I have to go out there and push a bit harder,” he said.

“Try and roll a few more putts at the hole and go for it. Just go an enjoy it.”

Fitness trends 2023: Online challenges and workouts in the metaverse set to dominate

Looking to try the next big thing in fitness this year here's some inspiration.

From shorter workouts to metaverse fitness, these are the big trends for 2023. Unsplash

With a new year upon us, many will be re-evaluating their fitness goals after an indulgent festive season. And with each new year comes a new wave of trending fitness crazes.

Some will last the test of time, while others will become a distant memory (remember kangoo fit?), but if you're looking to try something new in 2023, here are the fitness trends we predict you'll be seeing a lot of.

The 12-3-30 method

People walking on the treadmill in gym (iStockphoto.com)

TikTok users will probably be familiar with the 12-3-30 workout phenomenon that dominated the video-sharing app in 2022. The premise of the treadmill-based workout is simple — walk for 30 minutes on an incline of 12 and a speed of three miles per hour (5kph).

When regularly built into your daily routine, the 12-3-30 method can be an effective aerobic workout that burns fat and builds strength in the legs. And the best part is, you only need access to a treadmill, which is why it went viral on TikTok.

Several users have reported seeing benefits from regularly using this method, including increased fitness, boosted mental well-being and weight loss when combined with a balanced diet.

“Walking is a fantastic cardiovascular activity and adding the incline will help to increase the heart rate — improving cardiovascular health and endurance,” says UK personal trainer Laura Eaton.

“This exercise is also much gentler on the joints than running or jogging, making it an excellent choice for different age groups and fitness levels”.

Shorter workouts

As people’s lives get back up to full speed in a post-pandemic world, getting a workout done as quickly and efficiently as possible is becoming more important than ever before.

Kourtney Kardashian’s trainer Lindsey Harrod recently revealed the “super-effective” nine-minute daily workout routine she swears by, which can be done at home with no equipment. Elsewhere, Nike Training Club recently partnered with Netflix to offer a series of workout videos on the streaming platform, with 10, 20 and 30-minute options available.

Beth Brotherton, a personal trainer at PureGym, says: “If you prefer or are only able to commit to shorter workouts, aerobic training, HIIT or circuit-style weight training that keep the heart rate high will help you get the most out of your workouts.

“For those who prefer traditional weight training, I’d recommend prioritising compound movements such as deadlifts and squats, as these recruit more muscles and burn more calories than isolation exercises.”

The 75 Soft Challenge

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝓥𝓢𝓖| 𝓔. 𝓙𝓲𝓶𝓮𝓷𝓮𝔃 🫶🏾💕 (@fitbefore40__)

You may have heard of the 75 Hard Challenge, the fitness programme designed to push participants to the extreme by taking part in gruelling workouts for 75 days.

But to counteract that, the 75 Soft Challenge is gaining traction, with a 124 per cent increase in Google searches for it year-on-year.

The 75 Soft Challenge tasks participants with following four daily rules — eat well and only drink on social occasions, exercise for 45 minutes a day, with one weekly rest day, drink three litres of water each day and read 10 pages of a book per day.

The challenge is designed to build achievable routines that boost both physical and mental health in a realistic way, that can be sustained long after the challenge ends.

TikTok is full of people sharing their experiences of the challenge, with more than 180 million views across the hashtag.

Fitness in the metaverse

Last year, the metaverse expanded at break-neck speed, with more and more elements of everyday life becoming a reality in the virtual universe. And fitness was no different, with Dubai leading the way, creating the first health and fitness game in the metaverse, FitnessVR , powered by Scorpio Metaverse Engine.

Users can take part in several sports and fitness activities, ranging from eSports competitions to attending health and wellness conferences, as well as purchase NFTs to enhance their experience.

Elsewhere, virtual reality is being used by fitness companies such as Les Mills, which has incorporated Oculus Quest headsets into boxing and HIIT classes.

Fitness gamification

Several apps pair with smart watches to encourage fitness gamification. AP Photo

In 2021, 202 million people worldwide wore smartwatches, according to Statista, which specialises in market and consumer data. Statista forecasts that number to increase to about 231 users by 2026.

And with more people than ever monitoring their health statistics, many companies are gamifying the wearable technology experience to attract new users and keep people engaged.

Gamification involves setting users daily fitness tasks and challenges, offering rewards when they are met and showing users of global leader boards.

Apps like PlayFitt allow users to track movements such as steps, squats or push-ups, and earn instant rewards when they reach their targets, while WaterMinder allows people to track their daily intake and sends reminders when it’s time to have a drink.

This year, this trend is expected to grow further, with more apps that pair with smartphones to track and offer rewards across all elements of health and movement, including women's health.

In September, Apple released its Series 8 Apple Watch with new technology that offers greater sleep-tracking and analysis, and allows women to track their fertility and ovulation using a basal temperature monitor.

Dubai Fitness Challenge has officially returned for its 2023 edition, and it is set to be the biggest one yet. Helmed by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, the flagship event urges residents to engage in 30 minutes of exercise for 30 days.

As the city transforms into a hub of activity from October 28 to November 26, read on for all the major challenges to join now.

Dubai Women’s Run, November 5

Dubbed the largest female sports event in the city, the Dubai Women’s Run features three races—3km, 5km, and 10km—with monetary prizes for winners in each category. Expected to see over 3,000 participants at at Dubai Festival City, the run will also be joined by international athletes Nada El-Kurdi and Jennifer Tomazou from Lebanon, Heba Omar from Palestine, and Madalina-Elena Sirbu from Romania.

Dubai Run, November 26

Arguably one of the most awaited events of the year, the Dubai Run sees the iconic Sheikh Zayed Road transformed into a jam-packed running track. With the road closed to traffic, participants take to the longest highway in the Emirates for both, 5km and 10km runs, with landmarks like the Museum of the Future, Emirates Towers, and the Burj Khalifa as their backdrop. Few lucky runners may also have the chance to spot HH Sheikh Hamdan himself leading the path.

Dubai Ride, November 12

Another popular event on the schedule for biking enthusiasts, the Dubai Ride offers two options: a 4km family-friendly route through Downtown, and a 12km one along Sheikh Zayed Road. After registering for the free event, participants can choose between five starting gates: Museum of the Future, Satwa, Coca-Cola Arena, Business Bay or Lower Financial Street.

Dubai Stand Up Paddle, November 18

The RTA-led Dubai Stand Up Paddle is a new addition to DFC’s 2023 schedule and will take place on the serene Hatta Dam. The thrilling event is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for participants to glide a SUP board along the waters of the Dam with the picturesque Hajjar mountains in the background while soaking in the region’s cool weather. Participants can either bring their own boards or use one provided by the organizers, and proceed to take a complementary training session or dive right in for the DFC SUP Challenge session from 5:00pm to 5:30pm.

Fitness Villages

Three dedicated locations across Dubai invite challenge participants for various exciting activations including talks and workout sessions. The most popular one at Jumeirah’s Kite Beach features 24 specialized fitness zones with something for everyone. Think, padel, pilates, cricket, yoga, golf, gymnastics, and much more from 3pm-10pm on weekdays and 7am to 10pm on weekends. At Mushrif Park, the RTA-led Cycle Centre’s Fitness Village will host a range of cycling activities including mountain bike trails, a pump track, and track cycling. Weekday sessions will be held from 7am to 8am and 4pm to 8.30pm, while on the weekend, the center is open from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 10pm. Those who love intense workout sessions can’t miss the Run and Ride Central at One Central which is offering a variety of complimentary classes, from running to workouts like HIIT and Body Combat, as well as a dedicated spinning studio.

UAE youngsters set to rub shoulders with stars of tomorrow at Abu Dhabi Challenge

D espite the UAE witnessing its heaviest rainfall on record this week, Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club has pulled out all the stops to ensure the second edition of the Abu Dhabi Challenge goes ahead as scheduled from April 18-21.

The game’s rising stars and DP World Tour winners will compete in the seventh event on the Challenge Tour’s 2024 Road to Mallorca schedule, including 2023 Ryder Cup Vice Captain Nicolas Colsaerts, five-time DP World Tour winner Alex Levy, UAE’s No.1 professional Joshua Grenville-Wood and Craig Howie, who is an ambassador for this week’s host venue and has been a regular at the course for over a decade.

The Scotsman’s association with Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club began during winter training camps with the University of Stirling, where Howie found the tranquillity of the course a particular positive.

“It’s great to get away from the hustle and bustle of cities like Dubai,” said Howie, who has made the cut in all six of his Challenge Tour starts this season.

“Al Ain is a little bit quieter, so it’s a perfect place to come and work away from distractions. The course is always in great condition, and the team do a great job of keeping it like that. The practice area is as good as you’ll get anywhere else.”

Howie and Co will be joined by several of the UAE’s homegrown talents thanks to the Emirates Golf Federation’s (EGF) long-term partnership with the European Tour group, which aims to develop golf in the UAE for at least the next decade.

As part of that agreement, the EGF has received 60 invitations across the Abu Dhabi Challenge and next week’s UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for UAE golfers.

Nine of those invitations have gone to UAE National Team players, including the country’s No.1 amateur golfer Ahmad Skaik, his brother Mohammad and Khalifa Al Masaood.

Rayan Ahmed will also be flying the flag for the UAE, one month after securing both the Individual Gold and Team Gold at last month’s GCC Golf Championship in Qatar.

“I am really stoked to be playing my first Challenge Tour event in the UAE,” said Ahmed.

“I can't wait to rub shoulders with the highest quality players on the Tour and represent the UAE. My first target is to make the cut, but at the same time, my focus will be on my planning and execution, and I will take it each shot at a time.

“I love this course. My first time playing I won the Junior Open shooting 65, and last week I played the JAGA International Series and played 9 under par over 3 days with a 63, so my game is up there and ready for the Challenge Tour.

“I know the course well, I’m aware it will be a very different setting and field of competition. I am extremely confident of my long game, and my putting is getting stronger just in time.”

As well as giving local amateurs a taste of elite-level tournaments, two club professionals in the UAE are also set to rub shoulders with the stars of tomorrow.

Dubai Hills PGA Professional Louis Gaughan, who made the cut at this event last season, secured an invite from the EGF after topping the Emirates PGA Order of Merit, while Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club’s Thomas Ogilvie banked an invite after winning the Emirates PGA Play-Offs.

While the local players will be able to take advantage of prior course knowledge, the test this week will slightly differ to what they have come to know after the team at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club introduced ten new tee boxes to lengthen the course from 6,700 yards to 71,17.

With Thomas Love, Director of Agronomy, ensuring those changes to the course were made in plenty of time in the lead up to the club’s Challenge Tour debut, a new challenge was sent his way this week when the course was hit with a major storm that swept across the country.

The National Centre of Meteorology confirmed that the record rainfall that fell on the country was an exceptional event in the UAE's climate history since the start of recording climate data.

The Khatm Al Shakla area, just 36km away from this week’s host venue, saw the worst of the weather with 254mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours.

Despite the challenges that were sent Love’s way, he and his team have done everything in their power to ensure the course remains in tip top shape ahead of tomorrow’s first round.

“It's the biggest storm I've ever seen in my lifetime and something I wouldn't expect to see in the Middle East!” said Love.

“We knew rain was forecasted, so we were already semi-prepared for it. The agronomy team came in at 3am and I think the last storm was around 1.30am.

“Most turf areas were playable and allowed us to let the practice day go ahead. Bunkers however were all full, including cart paths and any roads around the facility.

“It was all hands-on deck this morning with multiple pumps and big 4500-gallon tankers working non-stop all day.

“The main goal is to get the bunkers back in play for the first round tomorrow. I'm still very confident we will have the course in fine shape for the event and be able to showcase our facility.”

In June, University faculty and staff members will have the opportunity to reclaim that title and enjoy an evening of camaraderie, networking, food, fun and movement. Participants of all abilities and fitness levels are encouraged to join the Syracuse University team. “Campus gets very busy this time of year with Commencement and end of year activities, so this is a fun evening to hang out with people that share the same Orange pride,” says Jacqui Smith, member of the planning committee for the University’s team. “This is also a great chance to get to know other folks from around campus in a low-pressure environment. And there’s food and T-shirts so who can say no to that?!”

Everyone’s favorite mascot, Otto, will also be there again this year to cheer on the Syracuse team—so if you’ve ever wanted to give them a high-five as you cross the finish line, here is your chance!

News | Pickleball players battle it out in Fountain Valley at the Veolia LA Open

fitness challenge tour 2023

Roscoe Bellamy grew up with a racquet in his hand – so when the longtime tennis player lost his first pickleball game, he knew he had a new challenge to conquer.

“Within the first week of playing, I got super competitive,” said Bellamy, 24. “I like learning and doing a new sport.

“I feel like I played tennis for so long, I knew everything about it,” he said, but this new and growing sport was different. The court is smaller and there was less chasing the ball around, a sport easier on his body.

Bellamy isn’t alone in his newfound love for pickleball. The Calabasas native will be among more than 1,000 amateur and professional players in Fountain Valley through the weekend for the Veolia LA Open, which kicked off Thursday and runs through Sunday.

According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, pickleball had a 52% year-over-year jump in participation in 2023 , making it America’s fastest-growing sport.

The competition happens at the Los Cab Sports Village, a hotbed pickleball facility where many of the top pros train. Several on the Professional Pickleball Association pro circuit call Southern California home, including top players Gabriel Joseph, Jessie Irvine, Sam Querrey, a Wimbledon tennis finalist, and Mary and Maggie Brascia, a sister duo who will compete in the Women’s Doubles on their home turf.

Los Angeles native Joseph will seek this weekend to hold onto the gold he won in Men’s Singles last year.

For Bellamy, changing course from tennis player to pro pickleball competitor two years ago has offered new opportunities as the sport grows. And he doesn’t see the popularity slowing anytime soon.

“I think the pro side is going to grow,” he said. “I think a lot of facilities are seeing the way you can grow your business . With more courts, more people will be playing.”

And the crowds who show up to cheer them on have a fun vibe, he said. “It feels a lot like a party.”

The competitors are battling not just to win this event, but for points to go toward their PPA ranking during the 26 stops on the tour. Then, they battle at the PPA Finals, held at Lifetime Fitness in San Clemente in December , which features the top eight qualified singles players and doubles teams in the world.

Spectators can buy tickets for the Los Cab event at tixr.com . Tickets start at $25.

The 25 Concert Tours You Can’t Afford to Miss This Summer

After a massive slump during COVID , the concert industry is again sh-boom, sh-booming! The gross for the top 100 North American tours in 2023 reached $6.63 billion, up 39.5 percent over 2022, with attendance nearly doubling, to 15,008 per show, according to Pollstar.

And this year is shaping up to be another box office blowout. Despite the national outrage over price spikes for eggs, airfare and gas , music lovers seem immune to ticket shock. Ticket prices climbed 22 percent last year, to an average of $135.88, compared to $111.49 in 2022. And the trend is pointing skyward.

Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour and Beyonce’s “Renaissance World” tour ranked first and second last year, but boomer acts remain the tour circuit’s lucrative and reliable summer tentpole, delivering packed arenas and sheds year after year as fans flock to relish the oldies and rekindle the past.

Here are the acts to catch this sunny season.

Heart (April 20–May 24, Aug. 10–Nov. 22)

Sisters Ann Wilson, 73, and Nancy Wilson, 70, haven’t released an album since 2016’s Beautiful Broken , but they have decades of hits, including “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” “These Dreams” and “Alone,” to draw from on their “Royal Flush” tour . Cheap Trick opens.

Kenny Chesney (April 20–Aug. 23)

After hitting arenas last year, country star Chesney, 56, has booked 18 stadiums for shows with openers including the Zac Brown Band, Megan Moroney and Uncle Kracker, his duet partner on chart-topper “When the Sun Goes Down.” All but one of the shows are on Saturdays.

Billy Joel (April 26–Nov. 9)

The Piano Man, 74, has scheduled only 13 dates , four of them at New York’s Madison Square Garden, so ticket stampedes are likely. Fans are curious to know if “Turn the Lights Back On,” Joel’s first single in 17 years, will be added to his hit-heavy repertoire.

$20 off a Walmart+ annual membership

The Rolling Stones (April 28–July 17)

Mick Jagger , 80, Keith Richards, 80, Ron Wood, 76, and company continue their global “Hackney Diamonds” tour , named after last year’s highly praised album , the group’s first batch of originals since 2005’s  A Bigger Bang . Expect  Diamonds  cuts and lots of hits.

Stevie Nicks (May 3–June 21)

Between Fleetwood Mac’s songbook and her own solo catalog, singer-songwriter Nicks, 75, has a huge well of material to draw from as she extends a tour that started in February. She’s been performing crowd favorites “Landslide,” “Dreams,” “Rhiannon” and “Edge of Seventeen” as well as Tom Petty hits in honor of her late friend.

George Strait (May 4–July 20, Dec. 7)

A touring juggernaut, honky-tonk country singer-songwriter Strait, 71, resumes the record-breaking stadium tour he kicked off in 2023. He’s joined by Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town. The King of Country serves up “his own Eras tour, leading a well-curated, decades-spanning set of songs,” according to  Billboard .

G4D Tour announces expanded 2023 schedule

The G4D Tour (Golf for the Disabled Tour) today announces its 2023 global schedule, with an expanded calendar of eight tournaments in six countries.

Rasmus Lia and Juan Postigo

Launched in 2022 with an initial seven-event schedule, the G4D Tour sees the world’s leading golfers with a disability compete on the same course, the same week, as professionals on the DP World Tour.

The 2023 season will see additional uplifts to the G4D Tour, including the introduction of a season-long Order of Merit to crown the Number One player.

Each G4D Tour event is open to amateurs and professional players of all eligible impairments, men and women. For 2023, players will be able to qualify from both their ranking on the gross division of the World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability (WR4GD) and events on the European Disabled Golf Association (EDGA) Tour, ensuring an international pathway to reach the G4D Tour. The European Tour group pays the expenses of players as they travel around the world, to ensure that the Tour is open to all players regardless of their financial circumstances.

To be eligible, all players must have a World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability and an EDGA Player Pass. Since the G4D Tour launched earlier this year, applications for a World Ranking and Player Pass have reached record levels, with 20% of all passes secured in 2022 alone – showing the impact the G4D Tour is having on raising awareness and increasing participation. The DP World Tour will continue to utilise its social media channels, and relationships with global broadcasters, to showcase the G4D Tour on a range of media platforms throughout the 2023 season.

This year’s inaugural season, which had its finale at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, saw England’s Kipp Popert win four G4D Tour titles and regain his position as World Number One on the WR4GD. The other tournament winners were England’s Mike Browne, Italy’s Tommaso Perrino and Sweden’s Rasmus Lia. Players of ten different nationalities competed, showing the international reach of the Tour.

The Australian All Abilities Championship, starting on Friday December 2, will be the first event of the 2023 G4D Tour season, with World Number One Popert leading the field of 12 competitors teeing it up at Victoria Golf Club. The Australian All Abilities Championship forms part of a festival of golf on Australia’s world-renowned sandbelt, taking place concurrently with the ISPS HANDA Australian men’s and women’s Opens.

The tournament will be played across three rounds at Victoria Golf Club, with World Number Two Brendan Lawlor and Spaniard Juan Postigo Arce, ranked fourth on the WR4GD also competing. World Number 12 Geoff Nicholas leads the home charge, having made history in 2019 as the first amputee golfer to qualify for The Senior Open presented by Rolex at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Speaking about the enhanced 2023 schedule Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, said: “The G4D Tour has been a tremendous success since it launched earlier this year. We have seen unprecedented numbers of golfers with a disability enquire about playing on the Tour and getting a World Ranking, thanks to the ability for these inspirational players to play Tour level courses next to the best players on the DP World Tour.

“We have developed a very close relationship with EDGA and the European Tour group will continue to support the association in its focus on developing capacity within the golf industry, through a variety of education and development activities. I firmly believe that golf has the potential to be the most inclusive sport in the world and the G4D Tour is a major step in realising this ambition.”

Tony Bennett, President of EDGA, added: “The G4D Tour is the visible manifestation of EDGA’s development of golf for the disabled – a process that started 22 years ago. Since our first collaboration with the European Tour group and DP World Tour, there has been exponential growth at all levels. The G4D Tour has created greater awareness and resulted in a cascade effect with more tournaments at every level, more national federations building accessible activities, and of course, more grassroots programmes than ever before. The support that the European Tour group and DP World Tour provide to EDGA helps make all of this possible.”

Feel the Grip

The Tour Flex Pro from Softspikes® in the key 3 forefoot spike locations and Silver Tornado spikes in the lateral and heel offer exceptional traction in all conditions and give your feet great grip on the ground when you’re going all out for the pin.

Soft to the Touch

Full-grain leather has a supple feel and sophisticated look. An internal strap stretches over then secures your foot, helping to conform to its shape.

All-Round Response

We stitched a Zoom Air unit directly to the upper instead of setting it into the midsole foam, so it responds to every step. A full-length plate beneath the Air unit helps increase energy return. Cushiony foam under the heel delivers a smooth ride.
