There’s nothing about this family-friendly movie that’s outrageously offensive, but there’s nothing about it that’s particularly interesting, well-executed, or inventively conceived either.

A screenplay that never quite clicks on all cylinders. There are too many scenes dealing with relationships that really halt any momentum.

Journey 2 is simply magical.

Undeniably an exhilarating family friendly, action adventure that'll no doubt thrill younger audiences.

Like its predecessor, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a race against time to survive, but the inclusion of new characters adds a little more interest.

For a family, this is an agreeable Saturday outing, largely because director Brad Peyton doesn't set his sight higher than the material actually is.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is light, airy family entertainment that actually ends up being too light and airy.

It's a harmless, lighthearted film with wooden acting, a nice message about accepting your parents-whoever they are-and again, lots of ridiculous CGI.

Audience reviews for journey 2: the mysterious island.

What's interesting about this standard adventure tale is how it tells it's story: the barest bones of construction, and only the points you are already well versed with (from all the other adventure tales they've "borrowed" from) to get to the point quickly. Quite literally they find a "secret map written in code" and decipher the thing in less than 5 minutes, and then "it's off to the island!". Everything happens fast, and everyone's only playing a cliche, and so after a minute it becomes cool simply watching the race to the end. Should I tell you "no surprises here"? If I did, that would be the only surprise of this feature.

Better than the first mostly due to the fact that the cast were more likeable and the story wasn't as cheesy, It's still cheesy but it's fun, The effects were ok but some looked pretty bad in places, I can't comment on the 3D as I watched the 2D version but just like the first it looked like it would be good in 3D, The story was predictable but fun and most of all my kids enjoyed it and that's the films target audience so it's hard to be too critical.

I just finished watching on my cable this science fiction adventure comedy directed by Brad Peyton. This is a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, and is based on another Jules Verne novel, this time The Mysterious Island. Very unusual cast stars Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán, and Kristin Davis. The story was written by Richard Outten, Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and the screenplay by Brian and Mark Gunn. This movie became a box office success with a worldwide gross of nearly $326 million, surpassing its predecessor, I think mainly because of the 3D technology. The story is happening four years since the events of the first movie, and starts with the 18-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) involved in a chase with the police which ended with him driving into a swimming pool. His step-father Hank (Dwayne Johnson) arrives and later discovers that Sean had broken into a satellite research centre in order to boost the signal of a code he'd received by someone he suspects is Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather who had been missing for two years. Wanting to bond with his stepson the next day, Hank helps Sean decipher the code of Jules Verne and makes a map from the three books in the coded letter with the coordinates to its location. All they need to do now is to convince Sean's mother to let the both of them go in search of the island. This is a film with very likable characters and actors in an adventure which could excite the younger audience, but not too exciting for the older. It is moving quickly but parts of the story almost seemed unrelated at some moments. Directing seemed done without any motivation... that doesn't mean it was bad, but wasn't very noticeable. If you want to spend a night with a family watching something which is semi-sweet and very colourful, give it a go!

Journey to ridiculous. But nice visuals/SFX. The Rock delivers the same crappola performance he's famous for...sadly.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a sequel loosely based on Jules Verne’s 1864 novel titled The Mysterious Island. Sean Anderson, now all grown up, receives an SOS note out of the blue from his long-missing grandfather. Along with a rescue team, he reaches the exotic island that is later discovered to be the missing city of Atlantis and rescues his grandfather before it disappears again.

The cast of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island includes Josh Hutcherson as Sean, Dwayne Johnson as Hank, Michael Caine as Alexander, Luis Guzman as Gabato, and Vanessa Hudgens as Kailani. Dune: Part Two is the second movie in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel of the same. Part Two resumes with Paul (Timothée Chalamet) as he reunites with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family and his people. Now, Paul must choose between the love of his life and the fate of the universe.

“For the first movie, we are following Paul, who is discovering a world. It’s more meditative, more contemplative, more him in contact with the elements. And for the second one, he becomes a man, a guerrilla fighter falling in love, and wants to avenge his father, and it’s more of an action movie,” Villeneuve told IndieWire in February. “We are confronted with the guerrilla warfare and the technology of the opponent. That will transform the old story and transform it into a war zone.”

Most of the stars from Part One returned for the second installment of the space epic, including Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica Atreides, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and more. New faces include Elvis star Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Oscar-nominated actress Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan Corrino, and Oscar-winner Christopher Walken as the Emperor.

The sci-fi film has earned more than $665 million at the worldwide box office, including $265 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo . Dune: Part 2 also marks the second biggest title ever for IMAX. Following its theatrical success, the film will extend its IMAX run in the top 20 markets across North America starting on April 19.

You can watch Dune: Part Two at home starting on April 16 when the movie arrives on digital streaming sites like Amazon Prime Video , AppleTV , YouTube , Google Play , Fandango at Home , and more. You can buy the film for $29.99 or a 48-hour rental for $24.99. Dune: Part 2 will also be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD starting May 14, 2024.

Dune: Part Two will also eventually be available to stream on Max. Although the Max release date has not been announced, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav teased on a Q4 earnings call that the film will arrive on the streamer sometime in the spring of 2024.

There’s also a chance that Dune: Part Two could be released on other streaming services later if Warner Bros. licenses the film to other platforms like Netflix (which the studio did with Dune: Part One ).

Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. Two-hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the hellscape their ancestors left behind. There, they are shocked to discover an incredibly complex and highly violent universe waiting for them.

Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout comes from Kilter Films and executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Athena Wickham of Kilter Films also executive produces, along with Todd Howard for Bethesda Game Studios and James Altman for Bethesda Softworks. The series stars Ella Purnell ( Yellowjackets ), Aaron Moten ( Emancipation ) and Walton Goggins ( The Hateful Eight ).

The internet is often accused of annihilating the personhood of other people, encouraging everyone on it to regard only themselves as whole, complex individuals worthy of empathy, and everyone else as pond scum. This is a dire read, but not an inaccurate one. Driving, however, should get some credit for doing the same first.

Behind the wheel, everyone else is a potential aggravation, a metal jellybean waiting to piss you off rather than a person. The anonymity of the road affords us the space to be petty tyrants; it also puts us at risk. Someone else can decide to reflect your perceived tyranny back at you. Annoyance can escalate to conflict. A fellow traveler can become something more sinister.

It’s important that Alone begins on the road. The minimalist 2020 thriller, now streaming on Netflix, leans into the archetypal sorting the brain does behind the wheel, immediately locking the viewer in on a primal level with its inciting incident. A woman is driving on a long trip through remote roads, hauling a trailer behind her sensible car loaded with all her possessions for a move. She tries to drive around a green SUV. The SUV accelerates, refusing to let her pass, and nearly forcing her into an oncoming truck. It’s frightening, and infuriating, but then she shakes it off… until she keeps seeing that same green SUV.

Directed by John Hyams (the low-budget auteur behind Netflix’s best zombie show ), Alone is a wickedly taut two-hander, with its lead, Jessica (Jules Willcox) slowly realizing with horror that Sam (Marc Menchaca) is not merely running into her out of coincidence. Mattias Olsson’s script doesn’t give much in the way of backstory on either character, but it hardly matters. Willcox and Menchaca are both adept performers capable of gripping you with their gaze alone — giving depth to Jessica’s growing desperation and Sam’s initially friendly menace.

As their conflict escalates, Alone — through spare dialogue and careful direction — becomes almost fable-like, less ambitious than, say, Men , but ultimately more successful. Jessica could be any woman. Sam could be any man. That’s why you feel your body tighten more and more as the film’s 97-minute run time races by.

To fans of direct-to-video action movies , John Hyams is a legend best known for 2012’s Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning , arguably one of the most provocative action films of its decade. In that film, Hyams established a visual style of bleak naturalism, a fondness for muted colors, and a distaste for medium shots. This brutally efficient combination makes his films feel hyper-real, uncomfortably so.

Hyams shoots in a way that underlines his characters’ psychological isolation, not just their physical one — dense forests are seen from above and from the characters’ perspective below. Bodies are blocked in a way that heightens their physicality, filling the screen or getting lost in it. Close-ups are reserved for pure reptilian moments of fear or adrenaline. While Hyams can dial aspects of this up or down — the gore and violence in Alone , for example, is minimal — the director is consistently skilled at visually triggering lizard-brain responses in the viewer, making him an excellent, if underappreciated, cinematic purveyor of isolation thrillers. Alone could be considered the middle entry in a loose trilogy of Hyams films about the subject, from Day of Reckoning to his most recent film, 2022’s COVID-themed horror film Sick .

These three films are wildly different, but there’s a similar nasty edge to all of them, about what happens when you allow inertia to blunt your sense of empathy. Alone is easily the most accessible of the bunch, beginning with a nigh-universal experience of road rage, and then slowly dragging its characters into the literal mud until its hero must violently assert her personhood in the face of indifference. Connect. inform. inspire., from flight to film: how a chance meeting sparked ‘bardejov’s’ remarkable journey.

The last thing Danny A. Abeckaser expected as he boarded a flight from Los Angeles to Israel was landing in Tel Aviv with a movie deal. This March 19, almost a year to the day later, “Bardejov,” the film he both directed and starred in, had its premiere.

Abeckaser, known for his roles in movies such as “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Irishman,” found himself seated next to an 88-year-old man named Emil Fish, who told him stories about his childhood during World War II in Bardejov, a town nestled in North-Eastern Slovakia. “It was a very interesting story of survival and the Jews of his town,” Abeckaser said.

Fish was a child when the events in the movie took place, but he remembers well all that happened during that dark time in history. When he finished telling his story, he asked Abeckaser what he does for a living and was excited to learn he is an actor/director.

“He said, listen, I have a script and I always wanted to make a film about the Jews of my town. He started explaining to me how in the last 20 years he had been building memorials in Bardejov, a museum and restored the synagogue. His entire life revolved around this. I didn’t know if I wanted to do a Holocaust film but promised to read the script. After reading it, I realized that I have to make it.  It’s a story of courage and how the Jews of this town didn’t just sit back and take it, they fought back. It’s a very unique story. We all know what happened a few months afterward. They all ended up going to the concentration camps but still it shows how some Jews did resist the Nazi and for a while, succeeded.”

Filming took place in Israel and Bardejov, and Fish, who was the producer and also has a cameo in it, was on set every single day. Abeckaser took a smaller role of the town’s doctor and gave the lead part to Robert Davi, who plays Rabbi Rafuel Lowy. The film opens with a survivor who takes his family back to Bardejov to show them thetown. The story then flashes back to 1942, when Hlinka Guard soldiers are in charge of sending unmarried young Jewish women to work at a shoe factory, or at least that’s what they tell them. Their leader is Stefan Reisteiter (Dean Miroshnikov) who looks like the perfect Aryan, blonde and blue-eyed. Rabbi Lowy and other community leaders realize that they are actually going to be sent to Auschwitz and concoct a plan to stop this from happening. The script, written by Shmuel Lynn, is a compelling portrayal of ordinary people grappling with the encroaching Nazi regime.

Fish lived for 60 years in Los Angeles where he was a builder and moved to New York a few years ago and is still working. In a Zoom interview from his office he told the Journal about his home town. “Prior to the war, there were 3,000 Jews who lived in my town, in 1942, 80% of the Jews were taken away to concentration camps and only 10% survived. The Nazi didn’t need to invade Slovakia because the president at the time was Jozef Tiso who was an ally to the Germans and said he is going to collaborate with them and do whatever they asked him to.”

The Fish family was able to stay in their town until 1944 because of an exemption some of the Jews received, but as the war progressed they were taken as well. “I was sent with my mother and sister to Bergen-Belsen and my father to Buchenwald. We all survived, including most of my mother’s family but my father’s family all perished.”

Following the liberation, the family stayed in Slovakia until 1948, at which point Fish decided to make Aliyah on his own through the Zionist youth movement Bnei-Akiva, while his family was waiting to receive visas to Canada. After three years in Israel, Fish received a letter from his father telling him he must leave Israel and join the family in Canada. “By then, I felt like an Israeli, I was speaking Hebrew without an accent and wanted to join the army. I tried to resist the best I can, but my father wouldn’t hear any of it and because I was a minor, not 16 yet, I didn’t have a choice but leave Israel.”

After he graduated from a Canadian high school , the family moved to Los Angeles, where many members of Fish mother’s family lived. “I got my engineering degree, got married, had three children and became very successful builder. I was very active in the Jewish community in L.A, I served in the Federation for a while, I was the president of Hebrew Hillel Academy and of Shaarei Tefillah . I was well-known in the community and lived the American dream. And then one day, my children — who were already married and had children of their own — came to me and said: ‘Dad, everyone takes their kids on their heritage tour and all you do is take us on vacations to Hawaii or skiing and never talk to us about the Holocaust.’”

Fish admitted that hearing his children say that, made him feel guilty, but his first response was: “The only way I’m going back to Europe is by plane to Germany, where I’m going to drop down bombs.”

After thinking about it and with a little more persuasion by his kids, he agreed to go. When the family got to Bardejov, they visited the Jewish cemetery where Fish’s grandmother is buried and saw it was neglected and overgrown. “The only Jew who remained in town, passed away a few years back and there was no one to take care of it.” Fish said. “We visited the synagogue where I had my bar mitzvah and it was locked. I was told that no one has the key because the last Jew in town had passed away and didn’t leave it to anybody.”

Still, Fish managed to get in the synagogue and was overwhelmed by emotions. “It remained exactly the same, just as I remembered it. I went to see the Heder ( The Room) were I learned Torah. I was thinking of the Jewish people who lived in my town and perished. And at that moment I made a Neder (a vow); the Nazis killed my people but they are not going to kill my heritage because I have a control of it. It became my personal mission to restore the town.”

Fish now serves as the founder of the Bardejov Jewish Preservation Committee.

Abeckaser, who was born in Israel and lived up in Brooklyn since he was 9 years-old, was a club promoter and, later, a nightclub owner, before turning a full-time actor. He had small parts in movies such as ‘Alpha Dog’ and ‘You Don’t Mess With the Zohan’ before landing his big film role in “Holy Rollers” (2010), which he also produced. Since then, he has appeared in many films and directed eight.

Making a film about the Holocaust in today’s antisemitic atmosphere, he said he hopes people will have a better understanding of how important Israel is for the Jews and what antisemitism can lead to. Thinking about director Jonathan Glazer’s acceptance speech for his film, “The Zone of Interest,” at the Oscars, he said: “What this man did have ruined so much for us. The world doesn’t understand what really happened on Oct. 7. People are going on demonstrations against Israel without understanding what they are demonstrating about; they are getting paid $80-$100 to go out and rally against Israel. Hollywood doesn’t stand with the right side, and it’s too bad, but I’m not going to stop my life and think why it’s happening. I’m doing what I have to do, like posting my opinion on social media and making films. I believe that this film is very important, especially now, and I hope that people will watch it and understand what antisemitism is and why it is so important not to keep silent in its face.”
