Awesome People Behind Us

By chance, during the university benches, still unconscious of what awaited me, I rummaged through the geological maps, the archives of botany, the minerals of the departments, from there a crescendo of theoretical and professional training, which led me to the course time to specialize in some areas of nature.

PRIVATE ETNA-TOUR

Useful information about our etna tours, our intention.

We want our customers to be as excited about this volcano as we are!

We want them to have experienced Etna , to have got to know it, to have learned what there is to know about volcanology, geology, plants, animals, … but also to have felt how a mountain of fire, gas, ash, snow is a living, ever-changing force of nature.

We want our customers to be as excited about this volcano as we are!

Hiking on Etna: What are the options?

Etna, with its 1250 km² surface area and an altitude of around 3340 metres, offers more than enough opportunities for a hike. From leisurely strolls to challenging hikes, there is something for everyone, young and old.

On a guided hike, we will not only show you the most beautiful places, but also tell you all about the history of Mount Etna, its eruptions and geological formations, fauna and flora. We will be happy to advise you personally on which tour is the right one for you. Here you will find the contact details .

Etna north or south side?

Mount Etna can be climbed from the south or from the north. There, roads lead up to 1900 and 1800 metres, from where we start our trek. In the east of Mount Etna there is a huge valley (Valle del Bove), so access is not possible up to a higher altitude. In the west, Mount Etna is not very well developed, it takes a long time to get there from the towns on the coast and you don’t reach high altitudes on a hike.

On the south side of Mount Etna, the cable car (funivia dell’Etna) offers the opportunity to travel up to an altitude of 2500 metres. Depending on the altitude up to which an ascent is permitted, you can then travel further up in off-road buses.

There is no cable car on the north side, so the north is also less developed for tourism. However, buses can take you up to Pizzi Deneri at 2850 metres.

How to get to Etna?

You can either come to Etna with your own car or have us pick you up from the hotel. There is no public transport to the north side of Etna, but there is a bus from Catania (AST Bus) to the south side (cable car valley station). However, it does not reach Etna until 10:15. We usually start our tours at 9am so that we can benefit from the good visibility in the morning and spend the whole day at the volcano.

The roads to Mount Etna are good, and reaching the meeting point is no problem even with a motorhome. Only when there is a lot of volcanic sand or snow on the road should you be careful on the bends. Winter tyres and snow chains are compulsory on Mount Etna from 15 November to 15 April.

There are plenty of (paid) parking spaces on both the south and north sides of Etna.

Itinerary of our tours

Our guide will be waiting for you at the agreed meeting point. You will recognise him or her by the T-shirt or jacket with the EtnaWay logo. From then on, we do everything in the group: we provide the equipment and, if necessary, buy food and tickets for the cable car. If you have any question or need anything, always contact our guide . He or she can help you with everything.

We always do small groups with a maximum of 10 participants and choose our routes so that we do not encounter large groups of tourists.

On our trekking-only tours, we start hiking as early as possible and spend almost the whole day at the volcano. We also have a lunch break on the mountain.

We put a lot of emphasis on bringing you closer to the volcano, our guides tell you interesting facts and anecdotes, history, geology, flora and fauna of Mount Etna and also of Sicily and last but not least of the traditions, the way of life and the peculiarities of the Sicilians.

To give you a complete picture of Mount Etna, we also visit a lava tunnel on our hikes. This is a cave that was created during an eruption. We always have helmets and lamps with us for this.

What equipment do you need on Mount Etna?

The equipment you need on Etna depends on the time of year, the specific weather conditions and the tour or altitude.

Good equipment is essential on Mount Etna! We'll tell you what you need and lend you hiking boots, poles, rucksacks and windbreakers free of charge!

It is best to wear clothes in many layers that can be taken on and off.

The temperature on Etna at over 2500 metres is about 10 to 20 degrees colder than on the coast. At 2000 metres it is about 10 to 15 degrees colder . When it’s windy, it can feel really icy, especially in winter. When the sun is shining, it can be warm in summer even at higher altitudes. The actual temperature felt can therefore vary greatly and can change rapidly from one day to the next or even within one day.

In summer you need sun protection (cap, sunscreen, sunglasses) and enough to drink (at least 1.5 litres per person). Even in winter , when there is snow, sun protection can’t hurt. You will also need a hat, gloves and warm, windproof snow clothing. On Etna it is often windy and the wind brings fine ash, so we recommend sunglasses also to protect against wind and ash. If possible, you should avoid contact lenses and wear glasses instead.

Advantages: Equipment rental

Good equipment is essential on Mount Etna! We'll tell you what you need and lend you hiking boots, poles, rucksacks and windbreakers free of charge!

At the meeting point on Mount Etna, you can also hire warm clothing or buy gloves or hats. Just ask the guide, he or she will show you where to get what you need.

What food and drink do you need for a tour of Mount Etna?

For a full-day tour in summer, you need at least 1.5 litres of water per person, in winter 1 litre per person is also sufficient.

On our pure trekking tours, we have a picnic on the volcano . You have the option of buying a packed lunch at the meeting point on Mount Etna.

On our Etna & Wine and Etna & Alcantara experience tours, we have lunch in a mountain hut or at a winery with typical Sicilian food. So you don’t need to take any extra food with you. Food intolerances or diets (vegetarian, vegan, …) are taken into account there.

Best season for climbing Etna

Mount Etna can be climbed at any time of the year , but not all tours are always possible.

In the warm season we usually have stable weather on Etna and offer different tours at different altitudes every day.

In winter, it can be very cold, windy and icy at higher altitudes, so we can only do a hike at a lower altitude.

In winter it is also good if you are flexible. It is best to plan your Etna climb at the beginning of your Sicily trip, then we can postpone the tour to another day if it is rainy or cloudy.

Climbing the peak is usually possible from May to November – if climbing is allowed at all due to volcanic activity. In the other months, the summit is too icy, making it too dangerous to climb.

Safety during an eruption

The Prefecture of Catania, in collaboration with the INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology), specifies, based on the current situation on Etna, up to which height Etna may be climbed or which routes may be followed. EtnaWay adheres to these regulations without exception! We respect the natural force of a volcano and want to offer our guests the highest possible safety.

As we stay in the safe zones, a tour does not normally have to be aborted if an eruption takes place; on the contrary, we are then lucky enough to be able to admire this tremendous natural spectacle. However, we may have to adjust the route of our hike to avoid the ash rain or gas emissions. We always have helmets for our customers to protect them from ash rain.

Start exploring mount etna with our tours.

Mount Etna has been our specialty since 1999. The volcano area can be packed with tourists, we can help you avoid those areas because we really know the whole Mt. Etna area.

In 1999 I arrived from Palermo on the East Coast of Sicily and saw my first eruption. It was Aug 26th. UNFORGETTABLE! All experiences since that day have been the same. To see one of these most exciting natural events always stirs the emotions. It is AWESOME!!!

Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanos worldwide, but she is not always erupting. Therefore if you’d like to see an eruption, keep your fingers crossed. If that dosen’t work, she will be unforgettable even without molten lava!

Remember that we are glad to guide you during your visit in Sicily, not only on Mount Etna. Feel free to ask about any other Sicilian destinations as well.

Continente Sicilia provides exclusively official private guides, in order to provide always the best Etna experience you could ever imagine!

Mt. Etna guided tours

If you wish to find out what to do on mount Etna, this is the ultimate guide. Along with this detailed article, we are going to share tips, suggestions, and disclose five unmissable excursions to explore this beautiful active volcano.

A Guide to Mount Etna's best tours

When they think about an excursion on an active volcano, most travelers picture the red, hot flowing lava. Those who visit Sicily during one of the frequent Mt Etna eruptions can see lava streams and get so close to it that they can feel the heat. Still, the Volcano has much more to offer in terms of tours and excursions than you can imagine. Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. This giant's flanks rise from the depths of the mediterranean sea to an altitude of 3320 meters. There are lush forests, lava deserts, 300 craters, hundreds of trekking trails, many caves, and the beautiful wine district on Mount Etna 's slopes. In wintertime, it is possible to ski. The proximity to the Alcantara valley and the Alcantara Gorges  and to  Taormina  offers the possibility to discover some of Italy's most beautiful mountain villages. If you are one of those travelers who love outdoor adventures, keep reading and find our top five tours to explore this Volcano.

1 Mount Etna Summit tour

Mt. etna summit craters

This   Mt. Etna Summit tour  with departure from Taormina must take the number one spot because most travelers that visit mount Etna aim to climb the top of this active Volcano and experience the feeling of walking around the rim of the big active craters; moreover, the view from the 3340 meters summit is breathtaking . This excursion's  departure occurs from the cable car on the south slopes at "Rifugio Sapienza," not far from Catania and close to the Silvestri Craters. After reaching 2220 meters with the funivia dell Etna , a massive 22 seat Unimong van in 20 minutes reaches the south-est craters' feet. The walking tour starts at 2900 meters, and it takes roughly three hours to get to the Summit. The trekking on the way back goes to the Barbagallo craters, formed during the eruption of 2002, to the viewpoint on the bove valley's edge, and back to the cable car.

Total time: 6h/Best price €169.

Careful: Some agency sells tours advertised with the words: top, summit or 3000 meters, but they do no go to the Summit.

Tips: Ask if trekking boots and walking poles are included in the price.

2 Etna mountain bike tours

Bike tour on Mount Etna

Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. Still, to see some incredible landscape, you do not necessarily need to reach the Summit. The lush forest and the lava desert of the north flanks between 1500 meters and 2800 hide some of the best views you will ever see in Sicily. The Offer for  Mountain Bike tours  is considerable; in the last ten years, Mount Etna's cycling trails have become very popular. Sicily Active offers different Mtb excursions both with electric and muscle bike cycles. We recommend the Etna bike Tour  on the north side between the great eruption of Piano Provenzana, the Pine and birch forest, and the passage by a beautiful cave.

Total time: 6h/Best price €69

Tips: If you are not very fit, ask for an Electric MTB.

3 Horse riding

horse riding on mount etna

The nature that the Volcano enclose is spectacular, and among the available adventures on Mt. etna, we place the horse riding tour on the top things to do because exploring the forest and craters on the back of a horse delivers unbelievable feelings. The Mountain chalet   "Clan Dei Ragazzi"  is the best place on Mount Etna to ask for a horse riding tour. Giulio is a fantastic rider and loves horses so much that his entire life is devoted to taking care of these noble animals. The tour usually goes through the pine forest and on top of some craters overlooking The Mediterranean sea. Giulio will show you the best places around while telling you about Mount Etna's geology and history .

Total time: 4h/Best price €120.

Careful: The lunch must be included in the price

Tips: Ask if they have both English and American saddle s.

4 Mount Etna and the Alcantara Gorges

etna tours

This full-day trip mount Etna tour that departs from Taormina  has been a best seller for many years now. We have included   this "Grand Tour"  in the top five Mount Etna tours because it consists of a hike through the forest, the climb to some of the most beautiful craters on the north flanks, the visit to a lava cave, and after lunch, the tour goes through the Alcantara Valley and inside the Alcantara Canyon .

This excursion packs so much in a single day that no other tour can beat the ratio quality-price of this full-day Alcantara Etna Tour . Visiting Mt. Etna through this tour will make you discover the best views of the north side and some hidden naturalistic jewels like the white birch forest.

Total time 8h/Best price €69

Careful: Choose tours in small groups, make sure the gorge's ticket is included in the tour price.

Tips: Bring shorts and river shoes for the visit to the Alcantara Gorges.

5 Etna wine tour

Etna wine tour

This Mount Etna wine tasting tour that we place at number five deserves to be listed in the top things to do in Sicily. For those people not very fond of walking and more focused on food, the wine tour is the best way to see to visit Etna. The view of the smoking craters and the vineyards is phenomenal. The best tour operators offer a jeep tour that goes off-road through the forest and a short guided walking tour, plus a visit to a famous winery.

Total time: 7h/best price €109

Careful: Make sure it is a Jeep tour

Tips: Check if the tour goes to the Alcantara valley and the beautiful town of Castiglion

6 Sking on Mount Etna

Mount etna sking

There are two ski lifts at the foot of Mount Etna's summit craters, both on the north and south sides. Between December and March, the slopes are busy with local people skiing, snowboarding, or just relaxing on the snow. Alpine skiing up to 2800 meters is also available, like Nordic skiing through a 6 km. long trail, the "Pista Poiana."

The price for a ski lift pass is €35.

 Careful: The weekend is jam-packed.

Tips: Try to sleep at the beautiful mountain Chalet of Clan dei Ragazzi.

Things to do near Mount Etna

We thought that it would have been a good idea to include a couple of extra excursions to discover the beauty of two places not far from the Volcano and that are amongst the top five attractions of Sicily's island; The Alcantara Gorges and Isola Bella Taormina Marine park . These two wonderful locations offer various tours and things to do. Let see what we have selected for you.

1 Body Rafting Alcantara

etna tours

Located in the Beautiful Alcantara Valley , we find the wild Gorges of Alcantara. The amazing rock formations of this Sicilian canyon along the river Alcantara is a geological marvel created by ancient eruptions and lava flows and is one of Italy's most beautiful landscapes. A  body rafting and riverwalk  tour is the ideal choice to reach the Canyon's deep part. The local tour operator provides you with all the technical gear (wet suit, helmet, footwear, and life jacket). To visit the Alcantara Gorges, you do not necessarily need to take part in any excursion. The first 100 meters of the Canyon are accessible even without any technical gear.

Total time 3 h/ Best price €45

Careful: Make sure you book through a legitimate tour operator.

Tips: In August and July, go for the first tour; the Gorges are less busy.

Marine reserve of Taormina Isola Bella

etna tours

Taormina is called the pearl of the Mediterranean. The marine park of Isola Bella is a must-see place while visiting Sicily. From the coastal town of Giardini Naxos, several activities explore the marine beauty of the Taormina coastline. Still, we believe that a relaxing boat tour to the blue grotto of Taormina is the number one choice. The departure of the Taormina Boat trips   heading to Isola Bella   takes place from Giardini Naxos Harbour. The two-hour tour visits the four most beautiful bays and the "Grotta Azzurra" Blue cave, where there is time for a refreshing swim. Onboard is available fruits and drinks.

Total time 2h. Best price €25.

Careful: Do not buy directly from Isola Bella beach; the tour is shorter, and they do not serve fruit and Drinks.

Tips: Go for a Sunset boat tour.

Soaring above Sicily, this colossal titan of fire and earth offers a kaleidoscope of experiences beckoning the adventurous, and the curious, alike. Still not convinced? Here are a few reasons why Mount Etna deserves a coveted spot on your travel bucket list:

Geological marvel

  • Geological marvel: Having existed for over 500,000 years, Mount Etna has lived (and continues to live) a rich life. It’s only over the last 2,700 years that volcanic activity has been recorded. So merely stepping foot on this ancient landscape is enough to give you goosebumps.
  • Old caves, new uses: Did you know that some of Etna’s lava-formed caves have now been repurposed to store meat and wine? Caves are conducive storage spaces as they are cool yet humid, preserving flavors and preventing spoilage, and you’re sure to see a few of them on your visit.
  • Trek through time, not just terrain: Weave past ancient Greek and Roman ruins nestled amidst the volcanic landscapes. Imagine Greek philosophers contemplating Etna's fury and Roman soldiers guarding its slopes as you lace up your boots and embark on a historical trek.
  • Beep beep on a jeep: On a 4x4 jeep, travel to Mount Etna and traverse undulating landscapes. Stop at ancient craters and peer into their smoldering depths, marvel at towering lava fountains frozen in time.
  • Volcanic vistas: Take in barren lunar-like vistas near the summit to lush forests and vineyards at its base. Overall, Mount Etna promises terrific panoramic views of the Sicilian landscape.
  • Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts: All roads lead to Etna, whether you’re hitching a ride on a jeep or hiking up top. Embrace the outdoors and Etna’s beauty by appreciating the summit through different means and perspectives.
  • Entrenched in Sicilian folklore: Etna is identified as the workshop of Hephaestus (Vulcan to the Romans), the god of fire and metalworking. It is also known as the residence of the nymph Aetna. It is even referred to as the home of the Cyclops Polyphemus in Homer's Odyssey .

Getting there

By bus: 2-5, 431N, 439, 530, 534 Nearest stop: VI Aprile Sangiuliano (1 minute away from the meeting point)

By car: You can drive down to Rifugio Sapienza. Park here and then get a ticket to a 20-seater off-road vehicle that takes you up to 8,500 feet. From here, a qualified guide can take you higher or if you choose, you can even use their services to ascend to the summit.

cable car

  • Try and reach Rifugio Sapienza (the starting point and located on Etna’s southern side) by around 8:30 in the morning. While the cable car officially starts at 9 AM, the first lift sometimes begins 15 minutes earlier. If you get here on time, you’ll be able to avoid the massive crowds that generally start arriving around or after 10 AM.
  • That said, maximize your exploration by taking advantage of the cable car and off-road vehicles available for ascending Mount Etna. The cable car offers a smooth ascent, and the off-road vehicles navigate the challenging terrain.
  • Take the opportunity to savor the unique flavors of Mount Etna. Indulge in local delicacies, such as honey, wine, and pistachios, known for their distinct volcanic tang.
  • Don’t let the fiery breath of Mount Etna fool you into thinking it’s summer year round–once you ascend the peaks, it gets quite chilly. Carrying a jacket and a hat is advisable to beat the sudden cold.
  • Always stick to the paths defined by the tour guides, especially when you’re walking up or hiking. This is because the landscape is constantly changing, so going off on a detour can be dangerous.

Dress code

  • Goes without saying, but wearing sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must while visiting Etna. Save those flip flops for the beach!

Accessibility

Due to uneven terrain and undulating lava fields, Mount Etna is not the most accessible destination on the planet. That said, there are limited provisions for wheelchair users to enjoy the volcano either on a 4x4 drive or by taking the Ferrovio Circumetnea train which circles the volcano. The Circumetnea departs from Catania and ends at Riposto.

Safety

Is it safe to visit Mount Etna? On most occasions, yes. The meteorological department is actively tracking Etna's state and will issue warnings if an eruption is about to occur. Moreover, Etna's eruptions tend to be relatively predictable, often occurring from its summit craters or new vents that open on its flanks. This means that most areas around the volcano are considered safe zones. Areas that are deemed too dangerous due to recent eruptions or volcanic activity are typically closed off to the public. However, before you visit, it is best to check whether it is advisable to visit Mount Etna during that period.

How to Hike Mt. Etna, an Active Volcano in Italy

M ount Etna loomed large over everything as we arrived in eastern Sicily that early January. From miles away, I could see the steam plumes rising from the snow-topped behemoth, like blown-out candles on a hastily iced birthday cake. Appropriately, I was on a milestone birthday road trip around Sicily, from Palermo to Catania. The second-to-last stop: Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano and also its tallest, at 10,900 feet. Scientists believe Etna has been active for more than 500,000 years, presiding over Sicily long before humans arrived.

I'm no stranger to volcano hikes. I've summited several active stratovolcanoes (composite volcanoes) in my lifetime, from New Zealand's Tongariro to Nicaragua's Concepción. Italy is the only country on mainland Europe with active volcanoes, thanks largely to its location near two tectonic plates. Vesuvius, the most notorious among them, engulfed and preserved the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum after a violent eruption in 79 A.D. Stromboli has had regular minor eruptions for thousands of years. While Mount Etna hasn't had a catastrophic eruption since an infamous incident in 1669, its many eruptions in 2023 filled the news with jaw-dropping photos of lava vaulting into the atmosphere. When I thought of Sicily, I thought of turquoise-colored waters, stunning cathedrals, small villages, ancient ruins and, of course, the wine and food (pasta alla Norma in particular). I hadn't pictured an almost-constantly gurgling volcano that locals ski down in winter.

Now, one might ask, why voluntarily climb something that could blow at any minute? It's a perfectly reasonable question, and it sits at the smoldering heart of volcano tourism, which has exploded (no pun intended) in recent years as eruptions have captured the world-Kīlauea in Hawai'i and Fagradalsfjall in Iceland, for example-even as the volcano blowouts damage or disrupt local economies.

Volcano tourism brings thousands of visitors to Sicily each year. Ten municipalities surround Mount Etna, with several villages of 5,000 residents or fewer who depend heavily on tourism from volcano visitors. Since its 2013 designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Etna has been one of Sicily's top-growing attractions. The Parco dell'Etna has taken steps to keep the crowds in check to maintain the volcano's integrity: specifically, limited parking, steep access fees, and the strong recommendation to take guided visits. The cable car to the start of the trails (8,202 feet) is 50 euros per person. Navigating Etna's unmarked paths and frequently shifting landscape requires the expertise of volcano guides. Visitors are permitted to hike up to about 9,000 feet alone, after which a guide is necessary, for both safety and environmental reasons.

A mountain of many moods

On the morning of our hike, my rental car begrudgingly changed gears on the snake-like winding drive from the town of Nicolosi to Rifugio Sapienza (6,266 feet above sea level) in Parco dell'Etna. As we approached the southern slope of the volcano along a twisting road, we spotted the glistening sea, villas with citrus trees poking over the gates, and small family vineyards making use of the area's fertile volcanic soil.

After acquiring gourmet deli sandwiches for our future lunch break at the meeting point (it's Italy, after all), we took the cable car up to meet our volcano guide, Vincenzo Greco . Vincenzo is a local volcanologist and second-generation Etna guide. He studied geology at the University of Catania and became the youngest person ever to achieve certification as a volcanology guide in Italy.

We started our ascent-excited to work off days of Sicilian cannoli-and trekked through the Valle del Bove. Winter-tanned Vincenzo introduced us to the volcano. He explained which eruption created which new landscape, noting how old this new rock ledge was or how this patch of ground has changed in the past decade. Six weeks before my arrival, in November, a new vent opened on the southeast crater at nearly 9,200 feet. A second vent opened three days later, effusing the new lava . In December, the lava flows reached Valle del Leone and the greater Valle del Bove, depressions on the eastern slope, creating a lava flow field and burping up occasional ash amid the steam and gasses. The lava flows would stop in February, once again reworking the landscape of Etna.

Everything here changes. I recalled the homes we passed on the way in, squarely in the line of Etna's fire if she ever got angry enough. With the windy road and altitude, there could be no escape if something happened. You really have to love the volcano, Vincenzo said, or at least love living by it or perhaps just be a bit stubborn.

Vincenzo and Etna have a passionate Italian relationship. He loves Etna, but their quarrels are, well . . . volcanic. He studies her moods and knows her mannerisms. He flew a drone over an eruption once and her heat melted his camera. It was an expensive mistake, but the few photos he got were spectacular.

About half an hour into the hike, Vincenzo ducked toward a large crevasse between two rocks. "Feel this!" he exclaimed excitedly. "But be careful." I inched forward, waving my hand around in the air aimlessly until a burst of boiling heat hit my skin. It was a small steam vent-Etna saying hello. The power of the invisible heat surprised me. It was a reminder of how easy it is to fall into a false sense of security up here. This isn't your average molehill. Thanks to unmarked paths and a disorienting amount of regular landscape shifts, Vincenzo and his fellow guides have had to rescue tourists when Etna gets moody.

Our hiking group turned a corner and came face-to-face with a lava tunnel formed by a previous eruption. We smushed into the narrowing pathway one at a time. The rock walls towered overhead on both sides, blocking out the sun above. Following the same path as a recent river of molten red lava was a stark reminder of Etna's power.

A crunchy layer of snow covered the black lava rocks throughout the journey, turning the scene into a black-and-white photo anytime the clouds rolled in and covered the bluebird sky. Typically, this time of year, hikers might need snowshoes or cross-country skis in addition to hiking boots. Instead, it was unseasonably warm across Sicily. We sat down for lunch as a crater pumped out billowing white puffs in the distance, our jackets off, the sun blazing. Up next, the final stop: one of Etna's four main craters, at more than 10,000 feet above sea level.

In some parts, the crater rim narrowed to the width of two footsteps side by side, on loose lava pebbles. The winds whipped the smell of sulfur away. I could see the clouds off in the distance, a white blanket over the valley. Above me, the sun beat down from a bright blue sky. The black lava rocks absorbed the light, but the white snow was blinding. For a brief moment, I grew disoriented. I felt like I could walk out onto the blanket of clouds, thousands of feet above sea level. Maybe it was the combination of altitude, sulfur, and adrenaline, but I felt briefly euphoric in this otherworldly atmosphere. In that moment, I realized Etna's pull. I brought myself back to earth by looking down into the crater, the bottom of which was so deep it wasn't visible. Halfway around the crater, a dizzyingly steep drop appeared. With a flourish, Vincenzo appeared to hop off the ledge. Was my guide supposed to jump off? Would I be stuck in Etna's clutches forever?

The descent was arguably more challenging than the climb. Vincenzo took off, hopping down the steep drop of loose lava pebbles. Others followed suit. Unwilling to body surf down thousands of jagged little rocks, I attempted to switchback. My boots sank deep into the ground with each sideways step, as if I had attempted to walk across a ball pit. I felt my shoes fill with lava rocks. Time to throw caution to the wind. Hiking poles in hand, I "skied" down Mount Etna, sending mini avalanches of lava rocks flying with each skip. The lava rocks felt springy at that speed.

Once we arrived at the cable car, the world changed. We had come back down through the clouds, and everything was gray. The seaside views were gone, covered by fog. I tried to catch one last glimpse of Etna from below. She was gone, off in her own world.

Know before you go

Getting there.

Sicily has two major airports: Palermo Airport (Falcone Borsellino Airport) on the west side and Catania Airport (Vincenzo Bellini Airport) on the east. Catania is about an hour from Mount Etna and Palermo about three.

Where to stay

The town of Nicolosi is the gateway to the southern entrance of Mount Etna.

Hotel Alle Pendici is a nine-room B&B dotted with framed photos of Mount Etna throughout the seasons. The rooms are basic but cozy with a ski chalet ambience.

Blanc Maison Etna is a five-room B&B next to a beautifully manicured park. The rooms have views of the pool, the garden, or the volcano.

Tour operators we love

The Society of Guides Vulcanologiche Etna Nord offers a variety of tours with licensed volcano guides, including ours, Vincenzo.

The frequent bursts of steam-and lava-don't deter visitors from navigating the slopes of Sicily's Mt. Etna.

An Italian volcano is behaving very strangely

Mount Etna and two vortex rings

Mesmerising vortex rings have been ‘erupting’ from  Sicily’s Mount Etna in a rare and stunning spectacle – but an expert is urging caution to those visiting the famous volcano .

The strange sight has led locals to nickname Mount Etna , one of the most active volcanoes in the world, as the ‘Lady of the Rings’.

Although often known as ‘smoke rings’, the white, almost perfect circles drifting up from the volcano’s craters are actually condensed water vapour – like clouds.

Australian National University volcanologist Ana Casas Ramos explained the phenomenon.

‘It is condensed water vapour,’ she said, speaking to ABC News.

‘On its own it is colourless, but once it reaches the condensation level then it becomes whitish – and that’s what we are seeing.

‘The reason why you have this water vapour coming up and condensing so quickly and then forming these rings is because of the temperature difference.

‘The water vapour is coming out very hot and then once it reaches shallow levels, like atmospheric levels, it then encounters cold air and that’s when you get this condensation.’

Mount Etna vortex ring

There have been no reports of disturbances around the volcano, with a major eruption deemed unlikely because the volcano is constantly degassing, reducing pressure build-up.

‘If it does culminate in an eruption, let’s say in the coming months or weeks, it’ll be just a couple of puffs, a bit of ash, maybe a bit of magma but nothing violent,’ said Dr Ramos.

Visitors on Mount Etna

However, she still urged anyone planning a visit to see the rings to be cautious.

‘It’s such an unusual shape and it tells you that the volcano is doing something very distinctive,” said Dr Ramos.

‘Yes, it’s beautiful, but it’s telling me that something is changing and in that sense it would be very smart to have caution.’
