The 2021-built/2022-inaugurated DCL Disney Wish cruise ship is The Walt Disney Company's newest and the first in a series of all three newbuilds . The Disney ship Wish was originally scheduled for launch in 2021-Q4 (inauguration by Christmas 2021) and to start passenger shipping operations in January 2022. However, due to COVID-related issues (shipbuilding yard closures, supply chain disruptions), the liner's introduction was postponed for 2022-Q2 (July).

MS Disney Wish is DCL fleet 's 5th vessel. The other two units from this series (TRITON-class sisterships) are with postponed launches and deliveries currently scheduled for 2024 ( Disney Treasure ) and 2025 ( Disney Destiny ).

The TRITON-class is very similar (as size and capacity) to the sisterships Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy .

DCL's new boats are originally planned for year-round deployed in the Caribbean and Florida-homeported - in PortMiami (Destiny) and Port Canaveral (Wish, Treasure).

Like all DCL ships, the Disney Wish vessel (IMO 9834739) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311001098) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

DCL-Disney Cruise Line is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (shipowner). The company was incorporated in 1996 as "Magical Cruise Company Ltd". Walt Disney also owns the Bahamian private island Castaway Cay (exclusive port of call - for Disney ships only), an exclusive Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral (Orlando) Florida USA  and the exclusive Lighthouse Point (privately-developed cruise resort complex on Eleuthera Island, Bahamas). Disney cruises are marketed as "family vacations" and feature unique and exclusive activities, such as costumed Disney Characters, adults-only deck areas, dedicated facilities for teens, kids and infants-toddlers, signature (trademarked) shipboard facilities and activities, themed live entertainment.

In early-March 2016, Walt Disney announced plans to build three new liners (the company's largest) and in July 2017 signed a 3-unit shipbuilding agreement with Meyer Werft Gmbh (Germany). Triton-Class vessel's interior design, facilities and cruise itineraries are still a well-protected secret. What is known so far is that they will be LNG-powered (by liquefied natural gas), gross tonnage 144,000 GT tons (larger than the originally announced 135,000 GT) and passenger capacity 2500 (1250 staterooms). This design is only slightly larger than the previous Disney Dream-Class.

The 3500-passenger ship Disney Wish is no exception with its primary market being families with small children (especially with kids younger than 8) - the major revenue provider for The Walt Disney Company. The vessel features some of the most innovative technologies and "best fun" ideas at sea, including:

• pieces of "Enchanted Art" adorning the walls of hallways - paintings and pictures that are actually framed LCD screens with a technology to recognize guests present and proceeding with one of several animations;
• wave phones in every stateroom (used to call or text other guests) and effectively replacing the old onboard beeper system (now the counselors' messages come directly to the parents' phones);
• the Magical Portholes on the walls of all Inside cabins (LED screens showing real-time outside views).

The company's clientele consists almost entirely of North American travelers (USA and Canada). Disney's new approach to teens and young couples features age-related activities and limited access to shipboard venues, adding a really strong appeal for multi-generational cruisers.

Ship's dress code is similar to Disney's luxury resorts - daily casual and evening resort casual - men with jackets (no ties) and pants, women - with summer dresses (optional gowns). All Disney Triton-Class ship cruise itineraries include one "pirate night" and one semi-formal night. On 3-day cruises, one night is casual, 4-days are with 2 casual evenings, on 5-days and longer - 3 nights are casual.

DCL's shipboard gratuities are now USD 14.50 per person per day (US$15.50 per Suite guest daily). Tips are generally given to waiting staff (including assistant waiters) and cabin attendants/stewards. Additionally, a 15% gratuity on all beverages is automatically charged to the passenger's shipboard account.

Decks and Cabins

MS Disney Wish staterooms (1238 total, in 26 grades) are mainly midship-located Balconies. All cabins and suites are well planned and equipped with the travel industry's latest amenities. Like on all Disney ships, passenger staterooms by sizes are ranked among the industry's largest standard cabins, designed to easily accommodate four people. Cabins are with ample storage space, lounge/living area and split bathrooms (1 room with shower-bathtub-sink-WC, and separate toilet-sink). Beds on are raised to allow underbed storage for 2 medium-sized suitcases. Each cabin has as standard amenities 2 mirrored vanities with chairs, 22-inch smart HDTV (satellite reception, infotainment system), iPod docking station, 2 rechargeable "Wave Phones" (for shipwide use).

The boat has 15 passenger-accessible decks , of which 10 are with cabins. There are a total of 35x wheelchair-accessible cabins for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility.

DCL's innovative Inside Cabin features (industry's first) "Magical Portholes" - large, round-shaped LCD screens (positioned above the beds) projecting real-time outside views provided by the ship's cameras. Veranda Cabin's balcony is fitted with 2 deckchairs and a low table.

Concierge Suites and Concierge Family Cabins offer direct access to the ship's concierge-served facilities (1 small lounge, private sundeck area with chairs, free food and drinks). Most 1-Bedroom Suites are with connecting doors, Queen bed (convertible to twins), sitting/lounge area with double sofabed, 1 pull-down bed (in the living room), walk-in closet, 2 bathrooms (one with a whirlpool hot-tub).

One of the largest accommodations are the Royal Suites, featuring a separate living room, wet bar, kitchenette (small cooking/dining area), media library, outdoor/balcony Jacuzzi.

The "Wish Tower Suite" is the DCL's (and the industry's) first-of-its-kind loft suite located in the ship's forward funnel (smokestack).

The unique accommodation is sized 1965 ft2 (183 m2), with max capacity 8 passengers, and interior design themed on Walt Disney's 3D animation film "Moana" (2016). The Wish Tower Suite features 2x master bedrooms, 4x full bathrooms, half-bath (powder room), library (converting to a bedroom), kids' room (with built-in bunkbeds). The living room (on the lower level) is flanked by an open dining area, a pantry, and a bar, all offering unique views across the ship's upper decks through a 2-story window wall.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The Wish ship has 3x themed MDRs (main restaurants) called "Animator's Palate", "Enchanted Garden", and "Royal Palace". There are 2x adults-only specialty restaurants - "Remy" (named after the "Ratatouille" movie star, French cuisine) and "Palo" (Italian cuisine) as alternative dining options. The line's Rotational Dining system allows you to rotate to each of the three main restaurants each night while your servers follow you. The Animator's Palate has screens showing animated Disney characters and themes from "Finding Nemo" movie. The Enchanted Garden is a Versailles-inspired room, featuring lighting effects, transforming the day into night. The Royal Palace is princesses-themed with numerous portraits of "Cinderella" and the "Sleeping Beauty" movie characters (even the bread baskets are shaped like Cinderella's coach). The food quality is very good, the service staff is amicable and timely.

The Remy restaurant is a classy place to be on any special occasion, offering a marvelous French menu and charging serious prices - a service fee of $75 PP (reservations are required, along with the formal dress code), drinks and wine are additional. The Palo restaurant is an Italian (Mediterranean) eatery with US$20 cover PP (serves dinner and on selected days - Champagne brunch). Superb fish and seafood entrees, a cold buffet (meats, cheese, shrimp, salads and desserts) and several hot made-to-order items. The "Cabanas" casual dining complex on Deck 11 has several food and drink stations for hot and cold buffet items (including made-to-order omelets and sandwiches). The "Flo's Cafe" offers burgers, chicken fingers, wraps, pizza, salads.

In late-December 2020, DCL released a teaser video that revealed that the Disney character Cinderella will be the lobby statue positioned in the Atrium's lower/base level. The midship-located Grand Hall Atrium is a 3-deck high entertainment area with an open-floor design and a grand staircase. At the liner's stern (aft hull section) is painted the Disney character Rapunzel.

Disney's 35-minute youtube video production released on April 29, 2021, revealed the following signature features of DCL Disney Wish.

• onboard appearances by Disney characters (Olaf, Captain Minnie, Captain Mickey, a fairy godmother)
• The 760-ft (232-m) long waterslide (Slide-a-Saurus Rex) has show scenes, special lighting and sound effects. In comparison to Fantasy-Dream, Wish has more swimming pools (7 total) and outdoor deck spaces, plus AquaMouse (pool district/water playground for families).
• The Oceaneer Club (a dedicated venue with supervised activities for children 3- to 12-years-old) is currently not available on other Disney ships. Other kids clubs include Marvel Super Hero Academy (Spider-Man, Ant-Man, The Wasp, Black Panther, kids can make their own-design superhero costumes), Fairytale Hall (Rapunzel Art Studio, Belle Library, Anna and Elsa’s Summerhus), Imagineering Lab (VR experience/kids can design and virtually ride their own roller coasters - based on designs like Tomorrowland's Space Mountain Roller Coaster, Anaheim Disneyland's Matterhorn Bobsleds roller coasters, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad/mine-train roller coaster), Small World Nursery (for toddlers 6-months to 3-years-old, with babysitting), Hero Zone (indoor playground/sports arena), Olaf’s Royal Picnic (character interactions, live music performances).
• For teenagers (11 to 17-yo) are designed exclusive hangouts with supervised programs. Children 11 to 14-yo have a separate hangout.
• On the deck above the Navigation Bridge/Wheelhouse are positioned staterooms. Some of the Suites are 2-level accommodations (fleet's first duplex apartments with connecting spiral staircases).

New for DCL dining venues include Palo Steakhouse (115-seats, also serving traditional Italian cuisine/Cogsworth-themed), Enchante Restaurant (by Michelin chef Arnaud Lallement/Lumiere-themed, capacity 45 seats, a-la-carte-priced menu, 6-course & 9-course dinners), The Rose Restaurant & Bar Lounge ("Beauty and the Beast" movie-themed).

Quiet Cove Pool District is an adults-only Sundeck with a swimming pool (infinity pool), Jacuzzis, Pool Bar, Pool Cafe.

The boat has two 3D Cinemas (named Wonderland Cinema, Never Land Cinema). These are screening rooms (with capacity 84 seats and 86 seats) for films produced by Walt Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm.

Luna Square is a midship-located space with family-style entertainment during the day, and in the evenings transforming into an adults-only venue. Luna Lounge features a 2-deck LED screen, Bar (Luna Libations), stage (for interactive and live shows, like “Villains Game Night”, “Disney Songbook”, “Disney Uncharted Adventure”.

Star Wars superheroes entertain adults at the new Star Wars movie-themed " Hyperspace Lounge ”. The venue became "hyper-famous" for offering one of the world's most expensive cocktails - the Kaliburr Crystal, priced at USD 5000. The new drink is encased inside a camtono (a security container for storing valuables in The Mandalorian/The Book of Boba Fett) which opens with a button touch and a twist of a rotary cylindric handle. The carrier's side panels then fall open granting access to the "content" - three shot-style glasses full of the expensive concoction. While the ingredients are not listed, there are some speculations that one of them is Remy Martin's Louis XIII cognac (US$3000-4000 a bottle) or other top-shelf liquor.

• Regular-priced beverages at the Hyperspace Lounge are priced from US$15.
• With the purchase of any cocktail, guests can take home as a souvenir the Hyperspace Lounge Glass for an additional US$12.

Disney ship Wish has 3 family restaurants with table service: "Arendelle" (with a Frozen Dining Experience/live shows featuring Disney Frozen 2 film's characters Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Sven, Olaf), "1923" (the year Walt Disney Studios opened/with menus featuring California food specialties), and "Worlds of Marvel" (superheroes and multimedia dining experience).

Also new for the DCL fleet are the "quick food" bars "Marceline Market" and "Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods". Both are complimentary and open throughout the day.

• "Marceline Market" is a food marketplace with a changing menu (and daily specials), both indoor-outdoor seating. All dishes are freshly prepared and include American and international classics, seafood, comfort foods, baked goods, soups, salads, vegetarian and vegan fare, desserts. Marceline Market is casual, with buffet-style dining (for breakfast and lunch) and table-served diners (with cooked-to-order entrees).
• "Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods" is a family restaurant (for quick bites) open throughout the day, including for lunch and dinner. This is an outdoor (seaside boardwalk-style) eatery with shaded seating and all 5x themed food stations - Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue (fleet's first BBQ bar), Donald’s Cantina (fleet's first Mexican food bar), Daisy’s Pizza Pies, Goofy’s Grill, Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream (also offering soft ice cream).

On Disney Wish (at Worlds of Marvel Restaurant/deck 4) debuts DCL's "Avengers: Quantum Encounter”. The new cinematic experience combines dining (Marvel Cinematic Universe-themed menu) with superheroes (Ant-Man and The Wasp on an action-packed mission), storytelling (with guests playing interactive roles) and technology (Quantum Core is a new device that causes objects to change size/shrink and grow remotely). Worlds of Marvel Restaurant's dishes are inspired by Marvel Studios' fictional countries Wakanda and Sokovia, as well as Avengers Compound (NYC base).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The ship's kids clubs are the main reason for Disney's high loyalty passengers ratio. Besides all the Disney characters, innovative technologies and fun attractions, Disney children counselors are a pretty big reason many families to repeat their bookings with the company. Always smiling and friendly, they are hugely experienced, all college-educated, attentive and downright. The Oceaneer's "Club" and "Lab" facilities (ages 3-10) are connected, thus doubling the fun space. The "Oceaneer's Club" features the "Andy's Room" (with oversized Disney characters for kids to climb on) and the "Laugh Floor" (with its "laugh-o-meter" and Mike and Sully of "Monsters Inc"). The "Oceaneer's Lab" is maritime-themed, featuring an Animator's Studio and a small Sound Studio. The new Disney approach allows all kids ages 3-10 to access the same clubs with separate rooms and age-related activities.

Cruise liner's children club is called "Edge" (ages 11-13) properly secluded on Deck 13 in the funnel. The best attractions here are the 18 ft (5,5 m) high LCD wall, the video karaoke, numerous interconnected PCs. The teen-only "Vibe" club (ages 14-17) is sized 9000 ft2 (836 m2), fitted with a fountain bar and its own sundeck and swimming pools.

Public spaces are decorated in deep blue and red, with numerous "Mickeys" just about everywhere (cabin, artwork, dinnerware, railings). One of the ship's most memorable places is the 3-deck high Atrium Lobby with its golden hue, the wide royalty-style winding staircase, and the Donald Duck bronze statue. The Grand Hall Atrium is a hub area connecting restaurants, theaters, and shops. You may check emails in the Internet cafe, but there's also Wi-Fi coverage throughout the ship.

Onboard fun activities

All stage shows feature intricate sets and Disney themed captivating performances, and the big place for grand entertainment is the Disney Theater with goldies like the "Golden Mickeys" and "Villains Tonight", new amazing stage productions, like the "Disney's Believe" (directed by Gordon Greenberg) and all the best Disney movies in 3D. Walt Disney characters onboard have always been the greatest sensation of all, and there are countless opportunities to meet and greet Mickey and company around the ship - in contrast to Disneyland, here they all are accessible and will always stop for a hug and a photo with you. Another big success is the "Pirates in the Caribbean" kids party divided into two programs - the sing-along "Mickey's Pirates in the Caribbean" followed by the "Club Pirate" (with many special effects) and great Disney fireworks (between the shows).

Wellness (SPA and FITNESS), swimming pools, waterslides, technology

The wellness complex "Senses" (Spa & Beauty) offers all the usual treatments (haircuts, manicures) and more exotic choices (hot-stone massages, mud baths).

• Senses Spa features an outdoor relaxation space/sundeck (with Jacuzzis, padded sun loungers and deckchairs) where can also be held open-air Yoga sessions.
• Senses Spa's "The Rainforest" (ice lounge) offers thermal therapies and is fitted with heated loungers, sensory showers.
• The wellness complex also has Treatment Rooms (for massages), Sauna Room, Steam Room, Dry Room, Spa Villas (for couples).
• Senses Fitness Center consists of a large main room (with premium gym equipment) and separate Cycle Studio and Aerobics Studio (where at an additional fee are offered Yoga and Pilates classes).

Untangled Salon (Beauty Parlor) and Hook’s Barbery (Barber Shop/Men’s Salon) are DCL fleet's first venues dedicated to hair- and beauty services for adults.

• Untangled Salon (themed on Princess Rapunzel from Disney's movie "Tangled", 2010) is colored in purple and gold and offers haircuts and styling, manicures, pedicures, teeth whitening, skin treatments.
• Hook’s Barbery (themed on Captain Hook/from Disney's movie "Peter Pan", 1953) is decorated in dark woods, furnished with leather chairs and golden mirrors, and offers haircuts, shaves, skincare and nail services. Part of the Barbery is a hidden bar serving premium liquors (bourbons, vintage whiskies, aged rums).

The Sports Deck has a small sports court, a mini-golf course, Ping-Pong tables, a walking/jogging track.

The "Chill" is a teen-only Spa within the facility.

The pool deck has a large area for family fun water activities, featuring 2 whirlpools/hot tubs and 2 kids pools - "Donald's" (5 ft deep) and "Mickey's" (with a spiral slide). A big attraction here is the big LED screen mounted on the funnel. There's a toddler splash area (Nemo-themed) located in the center on Deck 11 with huge glass panes for parents to monitor their kids.

The Slide-a-Saurus Rex waterslide (water-coaster at sea) is located atop the ship and features a 765 ft (233 m) long 4-decks high transparent tube. The spinning tube reaches an incredible height of 150 ft (46 m) above sea level (there's a 42-inch / 107 cm height requirement). "Toy Story Splash Zone" is the kids' aquapark where the waterslide ends. The adults-only "Quiet Cove" pool area is a great place to hide from all the little angels and devils around the ship.

Midship on decks 11-12 there is a Mickey-themed family district with a total of 6x pools (various sized and with different depths) surrounded by spacious sundecks with plenty of sun loungers.

"Disney Uncharted Adventure" is another fleet-first - an interactive family experience that combines imagination and VR technology into a multidimensional sea voyage full of Disney-Pixar characters. The new gaming experience is offered via guests' mobile devices. Via the app "Play Disney Parks", the phones/tablets transform into magical spyglasses allowing them to sail uncharted worlds, unlock missions, solve puzzles, conquer other "virtual cruisers".

• The "virtual ship" is mastered by Captain Minnie Mouse assisted by Captain Mickey.
• Players choose the ship's course, with VR options like Motunui Island (from the Moana movie), Neverland Island (Peter Pan movie), New Orleans (from "The Princess and the Frog" movie), Sydney NSW (from Finding Nemo) and others.
• "Disney Uncharted Adventure" gaming includes signature characters like Moana, Tiana, Tinker Bell, Kakamora, Peter Pan, Captain Cook, Nemo & friends.
• You must download the app prior to the cruise.
• Each player can choose to complete all or just a few adventures/missions and is allowed to start and stop at any time.

AquaMouse is a family fun water attraction and another DCL fleet-first.

• AquaMouse waterslide has length 760 ft (232 m) of winding tubes suspended above upper decks. The experience is complete with video scenes, special lighting and sound effects, "splashtacular surprises" (60+ water effects).
• The water ride starts with boarding 2-seater vehicles and ascending into a "magical tunnel" teleporting into the virtual worlds of “Scuba Scramble” and "Swiss Meltdown" (two short animation movies played out through the tube's large virtual windows/LED screens). Along the way are encountered curious sea creatures and popular Disney characters.
• At the height of the "show", passengers are blasted out of the tunnel to start watersliding around the upper ship decks - first around the forward funnel (through an enclosed tube/lighting effects), then through a dark tunnel followed by a transparent tube revealing breathtaking ocean views. Follow a series of speed blasters up and down ending with a loop over the ship's edge and into the Mermaid Lagoon (swimming pool).
• Both AquaMouse animated shorts (Scuba Scramble, Swiss Meltdown) are starred by Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. "Scuba Scramble" is an underwater adventure (at Mermaid Lagoon), while "Swiss Meltdown" is a mountain sledding excursion going awry. The two chipmunks Chip and Dale are in both shows, hitchhiking to Castaway Cay (DCL's Bahamian island) .

• Walt Disney Theatre (1274-seats, Magical Forest-themed entertainment lounge) is fitted with a Dolby Atmos (3D sound system) and offers live shows, aerial acrobatics performances, 3x grand-style productions (in the evenings), bingo, trivia games and 3D movies (during the day). There are two shows held each evening - at 6:15 pm and 8:30 pm.

Itineraries

Starting in July 2022, Disney Wish itinerary program is based on roundtrips to the Eastern and Western Caribbean departing from homeport Port Canaveral (Orlando City) Florida . A signature port destination included in all itineraries is DCL's private island in the Bahamas Castaway Cay .

The Maiden Voyage was rescheduled for July 22, 2022 (postponed from June 9th) due to construction delays, but eventually departed on July 14th. The ship's ex-Port Canaveral DCL cruise program includes short break roundtrips to The Bahamas (3- and 4-night itineraries), all visiting Castaway Cay with Nassau .

Bookings on Disney Wish cruises were opened on May 17, 2021 (for Castaway Club members) and on May 27th (to general customers).

On July 15, 2017, Disney Cruise Line/DCL officially announced the company's plans to build 3 new vessels in Germany, at Meyer Werft 's Papenburg Shipyard . The so exciting for all Mickey Mouse fans announcement was made by Bob Chapek (Walt Disney Parks and Resorts company's Chairman).

MS Disney Wish's construction officially started on April 8, 2021, with the keel-laying ceremony (Meyer Werft yard/hull number 705) held at Shipyard Papenburg, being the 54th cruise vessel constructed there. During the special event, the first hull block was lowered into the building dock, and, for good luck, under the keel was placed a newly minted coin that features the Disney character Captain Minnie. The coin was placed by Philip Matthew Gennotte - Executive Manager of the subsidiary Walt Disney Imagineering (Germany) GmbH. DCL also announced that Captain Minnie will be part of the ship's hull artwork (at the bow).

Disney Wish was launched/floated out from drydock (at Meyer Werft Papenburg) on February 11, 2022.

At ~8 am local time (~6 am UTC) on March 30, 2022, started the ship's 10-hour (32-km / 20-mi long) conveyance voyage on Ems River from Papenburg towards Emden . The voyage started with the Papenburg yard's dock lock passage, and around noon passed the Friesen Bridge (near Weener). During the night, the ship arrived at Ems Barrage (a storm surge barrier near Gandersum), then headed for Eemshaven (Netherlands) where remained docked for final outfitting. Curiously, the ship navigated/moved backward, being assisted by tugboats. Next is listed the conveyance voyage's schedule (local time):

• March 30 (~12:15 pm) Friesen-Brucke/Bridge passage (near Weener)
• March 30 (~3:30 pm) Jann-Berghaus-Brucke/Bridge passage (near Leer )
• March 31 (~12:30 am) Ems Barrage passage (near Gandersum)
• March 31 (~2:30 am) arriving at Port Emden

On January 22, 2019, Port Canaveral officials gathered to discuss the new liners' docking at DCL's exclusive Cruise Terminal 8. The facility was improved and upgraded in order to accommodate/berth the 3 new boats simultaneously. With scheduled deliveries in 2022 (Wish), 2024 ( Treasure ) and 2025 ( Destiny ), the newbuilds are designed with ~1250 staterooms each. To handle them, Orlando Port Canaveral's Disney Terminal 8 was upgraded to passenger capacity 7500 tourists at a time.

DCL's TRITON liners have LOA length 341 m (1119 ft), making them the fleet's longest. By GT tonnage/volume (~144,000 tons each) and passenger capacity (2500 / max 3500), the newbuilds are similarly sized as the sisterships Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy , but LNG-powered (by liquefied natural gas) and with more and new facilities and amenities. In 2025, Walt Disney will nearly double its old 4-ship fleet (Dream, Fantasy, Magic, Wonder).

At the released on March 9, 2018, the new ship's exterior rendering was shown the company's traditional black-white-red hull color scheme. New in the design is the superstructure's golden flair. Between the two funnels is located top-deck's waterpark with slides. Balcony cabins are positioned midship, which allows larger staterooms.

'"Disney Triton" was chosen as the name of Walt Disney's new vessel class/series. Triton is Ancient Greece's god of the sea. Being the son of Poseidon (the god of the waters) and Amphitrite (the goddess of the Sea), Triton is the herald for his father and usually represented as a Merman (male mermaid) having an upper human body and tail and fins of a fish. Like his father, Triton carries a trident, but his special attribute is a twisted conch shell with which he calms or raises the waves. According to the Disney story, King Triton is the protective and loving father of "The Little Mermaid" Ariel, as well as one of the most powerful Disney characters ever created.

Disney Wish was officially delivered by Meyer Werft to DCL on June 9, 2022, in Port Bremerhaven . The ceremony was attended by Thomas Mazloum (DCL's President), Jan Meyer (Meyer Werft GmbH's Managing Director), Henning Stellermann (Meyer Werft's Project Manager).

Following the delivery to DCL, Disney Wish left Bremerhaven (on June 9th, at 17:29 UTC) and via Ponta Delgada/Sao Miguel Island Azores Portugal (bunkering stop on June 13th, between 12:11-21:56 UTC) made the Transatlantic crossing from Europe to the USA, arriving at Port Canaveral on June 20th, at 9:08 UTC.

In 2019 was announced that during their inaugural seasons in the Caribbean, two of Disney's newest ships (Wish and Treasure) will be homeported in Port Canaveral - the principal seaport for Orlando City (Walt Disney's theme park capital). The 3rd newbuild (Destiny) will be based in PortMiami . In Miami and Port Canaveral, DCL's newest liners are fueled by LNG bunkering barges docking alongside the berthed vessel.

In late-April 2021, DCL released the first video of the "Designing the Disney Wish" series themed on the ship's design, Disney characters and special features. The hull design features Captain Minnie Mouse (bow character) and the sculpture of Rapunzel (aft/at the stern). The liner's interior is designed using three classic Disney themes - fairytale castles (including for the Atrium's Grand Hall), forests and animals, and the spirit of the sea. The 3-deck high Atrium (midship-located, open-floor area) features a grand staircase, the bronze sculpture of Cinderella (at the Lobby level), and a large chandelier with thousands of crystals and a huge "wishing star" at its bottom.

Ship christening 2022

In June 2022 DCL announced that instead of a godmother/godfather/godparents the Wish ship will have godchildren - from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Make-A-Wish is a 1980-founded children's charity (Phoenix, Arizona USA-headquartered American non-profit organization) created to fulfill the wishes of children with critical illnesses (website wish.org).

DCL's announcement included that during the ship's naming ceremony, the Make-A-Wish children will recite the traditional blessings for the vessel. The Disney-Make-A-Wish partnership also includes creating and selling fleetwide Disney-themed merchandise, with 10% of the profits donated to the Foundation.

The christening ceremony was held on June 30th (pierside at Port Canaveral Terminal) and attended by Bob Chapek (The Walt Disney Company's CEO) and Josh D'Amaro (Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products). Anika Noni Rose (voice actor for the character Tiana in "The Princess and the Frog"/2009 animated musical film) performed live singing along with characters from the movies Toy Story, Frozen, Marvel, Star Wars.

Near the end of the naming ceremony, three godchildren/Make-A-Wish children recited the traditional ship blessing.

Disney Cruise Line Announces Summer 2023 Itineraries (May – September) – Disney Dream Heading to Europe

Disney Cruise Line released their Summer 2023 itineraries today for the fleet. The major news in today’s itinerary announcement is the redeployment of the Disney Dream to Europe. The Disney Wonder which continues to remain on the West Coast will spend the summer in Alaska. The Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish remain at Port Canaveral offering Caribbean and Bahamian cruises. The Disney Magic, will offer sailings from Miami and San Juan.

Disney Cruise Line is still loading the sailings so this remains a work in progress and will be updated multiple times today.

Today’s release extends the available sail dates through the summer months of 2023 giving guests options for their future cruise credits and plan vacations more than one year out, as well as take advantage of opening day pricing for some of the new itineraries.

There is a change in the tiered booking cadence. While Summer 2023 dates were announced today, general booking will not open until Monday May 9th . The new spread out tiered booking period will begin Monday May 2nd for Castaway Club Members and some others.

• Monday May 2nd – Platinum Members, Golden Oak Club Members and Club 33 Members
• Tuesday May 3rd – Gold Castaway Club members
• Thursday May 5th – Silver Members, Disney Vacation Club Members and Adventures by Disney Insiders
• Monday May 9th, first time cruisers will be able to book.

If you’re an existing Castaway Club member, simply log in to your account now to verify your Castaway Club status, so you’ll be all set to book on your designated date. Alternatively, you can call (800) 388-4513 starting at 8:00 AM Eastern Time or contact your travel agent.

Castaway Club members can book online beginning Monday! The only caveat is that this is for new bookings only as the website is still not set up to move a placeholder to a new booking. Those types of bookings will still require a phone call.

Disney Magic Summer 2023 Sailings

The Disney Magic’s next batch of sailings will resume from San Juan on May 5, 2023 offering a 7-, and 8-night Southern Caribbean cruises. On May 20th, the Disney Magic will sail a mix of 3-, 4-, and 5-Night Bahamian, and 5-, and 7-night Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises through to September 25th. Yes, there is an itinerary gap from April 14th – May 4th which could possibly indicate a 2023 dry dock.

For the first time, the Disney Dream summer will begin on May 4th with one last sailing from Miami then embark on her inaugural European season on May 7th with an 13-Night Transatlantic cruise to Barcelona. The summer will feature sailings in the Mediterranean with a heavy dose of Greek Isles. Disney Cruise Line Celebrates Summer 2023 with Family Adventures in Alaska, Europe, the Bahamas and Caribbean

Highlights include the Disney Dream’s first call to Europe and a return to Alaska 

CELEBRATION, Fla.  – Disney Cruise Line will offer families a variety of enchanting vacations in summer 2023, including cruises to new and favorite ports of call around the world. From the majestic glaciers of Alaska to the sun-kissed Greek isles, pink sand beaches of Bermuda and picturesque fjords of Norway, these summer destinations will sparkle with adventure and excitement. Plus, for the first time ever, families will have the opportunity to sail around the Mediterranean and British Isles on the Disney Dream during its first season in Europe.

“We are thrilled to have five ships at sea in summer 2023 with a wide array of destinations for families to enjoy,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president & general manager of Disney Cruise Line. “These Disney Cruise Line sailings will take families on summer adventures in ways that only Disney can do, delighting guests of all ages with dazzling entertainment, world-class dining, unique character encounters, the ease and indulgence of carefree days at sea and the uncompromising guest service that defines a Disney vacation.”

Disney Dream Marks Inaugural Season in Europe For its first-ever summer season in Europe, the Disney Dream will call on a wide variety of destinations among the most treasured in the world. With sailings anywhere from four to 11 nights, the Disney Dream will sail from Barcelona and Rome to picturesque ports of call throughout the Mediterranean, including a first-ever seven-night sailing to the Greek Isles with stops in the ever-popular ports of Santorini and Mykonos. 

Late summer/early fall departures of the Disney Dream from Southampton will feature cruises to a wealth of destinations including Spain, France, the British Isles, Norway and Iceland. New ports of call include the postcard-worthy La Rochelle, France and two new ports in Norway – Skjolden, home to a wealth of natural attractions, and Sandnes, a small city just outside the metropolis of Stavanger known for its outdoor activities. 

Summer 2023 sailings to Alaska aboard Disney Wonder The breathtaking natural beauty of Alaska will combine with the magic of Disney on five-, seven- and nine-night sailings on the Disney Wonder from Vancouver, Canada. Beginning in May, cruisers will be invited to discover exciting ports like Ketchikan and Skagway, with their prehistoric glaciers, gold mining relics and spectacular land- and sea-life. Three Alaskan itineraries call at Icy Strait Point, home to a coastal rainforest, wilderness tours and – for thrill-seekers – ziplining above the treetops.

Tropical Escapes to the Bahamas and Caribbean from Florida Sun-splashed tropical isles throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean will await guests on three Disney Cruise Line ships from Florida in summer 2023. 

For its first full summer of sailing, the Disney Wish will homeport in Port Canaveral near Orlando for a series of three- and four-night Bahamas cruises to Nassau and Disney’s private island oasis, Castaway Cay. The Disney Wish will feature exciting new additions including Disney’s first “Frozen”-themed theatrical dining experience and AquaMouse, a wild water adventure and first-ever Disney attraction at sea.

Port Canaveral will also be the departure point for the Disney Fantasy for sailings ranging in length from five to 10 nights. In addition to seven-night cruises to popular ports in the eastern and western Caribbean, guests will also be able to experience a five-night Bahamian sailing with back-to-back calls at Castaway Cay, a 10-night southern Caribbean itinerary to the islands of Aruba and Bonaire and an eight-night cruise featuring two days on the beautiful pink sand beaches of Bermuda.

The Disney Magic will make its summer home in Miami for an assortment of exciting destinations. Starting May 27, the Disney Magic will sail four-night Bahamas cruises and five-night western Caribbean voyages, followed by two seven-night sailings in July to the eastern and western Caribbean. Select summer voyages aboard the Disney Magic will include double days – for double the fun – at Castaway Cay.

Where can we find prices?

Starting prices are currently on DCL’s website. I am working on a opening day pricing summary.

Maybe the Disney Dream will be coming to New York CIty next fall in 2023

Oh my. I’m already stashing away money for the NYC to Orlando jaunt.

Any idea where the Magic will be between New Orleans & San Juan in April/May 2023?

Currently penciling in a dry dock.

Going to be real excited about this.

Great release, was hoping it was gonna be Fantasy going to Europe though- the revival of the NYC Horn?? Also, I wish they would throw some Caribbean sailings on Wish into the mix- would definitely book one of those if it was an option.

There is going to be a issue on July 9th, 2023, since both Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish are scheduled to be there at the same time according this release.

Also, will be an issue on September 29th, as both Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy are scheduled to be on Castaway Cay on that day.

Not going to be an issue once DCL publishes the actual port orders and I can make the necessary updates. This is why I mention under each ship’s summary: “Please note, the port order may be different due to fleet deployment and will be adjusted once the full detailed itineraries are available to view on Disney Cruise Line’s website.”

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy : Disney’s Mediterranean and Greek Isles cruises depart from (or visit) Civitavecchia. The port offers easy access to Rome and its famous landmarks, including the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica, and Pantheon.

Livorno (Florence, Pisa), Italy : Livorno is a seaport in Tuscany and serves as the gateway to Florence and Pisa, offering plenty of things to see and do. These include shopping, visiting the central market, exploring picturesque parks and beaches, marveling at historic landmarks like the Old Fortress and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and touring art museums like the Ufizzi Gallery.

Messina (Sicily), Italy : Messina port in Sicily is a picturesque city of contrasts with different eras and influences of architecture set against the crystalline blue of the Strait of Messina. Amsterdam, Netherlands : Amsterdam is a charming and convenient port of call on Disney Northern European cruises, offering a variety of attractions such as shopping, museums, windmills, historic landmarks, and canal tours.

Rotterdam (Amsterdam), Netherlands : Rotterdam is a historic port city with a modern skyline, offering cutting-edge attractions and a thriving arts and culinary scene. Haugesund, Norway: For almost 500 years, it was the royal seat of Norway. To this day, it’s still teeming with Viking history. Haugesund is home to Haraldshaugen, a national monument with a towering obelisk surrounded by 29 stones representing the historic counties of Norway.

Mekjarvik (Stavanger), Norway : Mekjarvik serves as a gateway to Stavanger, Norway’s southwest coast, offering outdoor adventure, Viking history, and old-world charm. Highlights include Old Stavanger, Pulpit Rock, Øvre Holmegate, a street art tour, and the Swords in Rock Monument.

Nordfjordeid, Norway : Nordfjordeid is a picturesque port village on Norway’s fjords . Our Honest Disney Wish Review: Is a Disney Wish Cruise Worth It?

Disney Cruise Line debuted the Disney Wish in July 2022, and it was the biggest and most modern ship to date. In fact, it was really a complete reimagining of what the Disney Cruise ships could look like . But, let’s start this Disney Wish review out with some honesty: reimagining doesn’t always mean it’s going to get better.

In this review I’m going to dive into all the nitty gritty of the design of the Disney Wish and the guest offerings on the ship. But let’s get right to the main point here: We didn’t love the Disney Wish cruise as much as our previous Disney Cruise experience . Sure, there are some amazing spaces and unique offerings. But overall, this cruise experience wasn’t our favorite. Here’s why.

Disney Wish Stats

Ok, let’s start with some stats. Which, okay, yes, *yawn* I get it. But I want to give you a few of these stats because they give you a picture of *why* we didn’t love this ship.

• Ship class: Wish-class (this is the debut of a new class of Disney cruise ships, which explains why this one is so different!)
• Passenger capacity: 4,000 (this felt like a lot, especially when paired with the poor layout of the ship)
• Number of cabins: 1,254 (which, in what I think is hilarious, is just 4 more than the Dream and Fantasy)

Now, full transparency. We haven’t been on the Dream or Fantasy yet, which has a similar passenger capacity to the Wish. (We have a cruise booked on the Dream in early 2025!) But from what I’ve heard from other passengers, the capacity on the Dream and Fantasy doesn’t feel quite so bad because it has a better layout.

Disney Wish Design and Layout

So let’s get into the design and layout of the Disney Wish. It’s a little hard to explain here without a full map, but let’s see what we can do.

Where Are the Elevators?

Along with so many other people who have been on the Wish, the lack of mid-ship elevators was one of my biggest gripes. Traditionally Disney Cruise ships have had three sets of elevators: forward, mid-ship, and aft. But on the Disney Wish, there are only forward and aft elevators.

It doesn’t seem like it should be that big of a deal, because while there aren’t mid-ship elevators, there are actually *more* elevators in total on this ship than any other Disney cruise ship to date.

But not having the mid-ship elevators creates some problems:

• Traffic jams , as people crowd in the hallways and stairwells trying to access the only two elevator banks on each level. That third bank would have made a big crowded difference!
• Missing out on the Grand Hall (atrium), because unless you are going there for some specific purpose, you don’t find yourself there much. Which is kind of a bummer. Whereas, when we were on the Magic, we found ourselves in the Atrium all the time because the mid-ship elevators would be most convenient to wherever we were going, and then we could check out all that was going on in the Atrium (which was usually a lot!).

I also had issue with how the hallways to the elevators were designed. Many of the elevator banks were only accessible from one direction of the ship. Which means people lined up in the stair wells in front of the elevators (not wanting to go to deep into the bank and miss out on the first available elevator to someone else), which blocked both the hallways and the stairs.

The Grand Hall

The Grand Hall on the Disney Wish is BEAUTIFUL , but as I pointed out with the elevator issue, we just didn’t find ourselves there enough . It wasn’t really on the way to anything else, unless we were going to eat at 1923.

And while the presence of the stage is nice for events, I don’t think having the stage here is worth losing out on the elevators.

Hallways and Doors

Ok, let’s talk about the hallways on the Disney Wish and how confusing they are. In fact, even after getting off the ship I’m not sure I understand them enough to explain *why* they were confusing. They just were. Like, why is the Hero Zone in such a weird spot? And why do the hallways near the theater feel like a maze even though they look straightforward on a map?

I also had issues with the placement of doors going out to the promenades outside. Because they were hard to find! WHY are some of the main doors out to the outside of the ship not windowed? In fact, several of them look like “Cast Member Only” doors until you read the sign and realize it’s inviting you outside.

There were also several instances where double doors to the outside on the pool deck had only one side open, causing some major traffic jams as people were trying to go both ways through a single door during busy times. And it wasn’t even possible to open the other side! We saw someone try and break the door by accident!

And then there is the whole Deck 4 debacle. If you like to run laps around the promenade, there is no way to do so without going up and down stairs!

Cramped Quarters

Ok, I’ve already talked about hallways and elevator banks being cramped, but lets talk about other areas that were cramped.

First of all, Marceline Market, the buffet restaurant on the Wish, was poorly designed. Maybe it’s super spacious back in the kitchen or something, but there is just not enough room in Marceline Market for all the traffic of people getting food at the buffet and other people walking behind them.

I also thought the entrances into and out of the pool deck were particularly crowded . Part of the problem is that the doors lead right to the elevator banks, where people tended to crowd waiting for elevators. (Do you notice a theme that I don’t like the crowds on the ship? And that elevators were the crux of the problem here?)

Disney Wish Staterooms

Ok, let’s get a more positive part of this Disney Wish review: the staterooms. The staterooms on the Wish are a big change from the staterooms on the other Disney Cruise ships. They are much more modern and bright, with lighter colors and custom theming.

Things I Loved About the Disney Wish Staterooms

• Disney continued there double bathroom design , with one bathroom housing a toilet and sink and they other bathroom housing the shower and another sink.
• Disney-themed murals above the beds. They are SO pretty!
• The lighter, airier feel.
• The TV moved to the front of the bed , which makes more sense for parents and children sharing a room (at least in my opinion!).

Things I Didn’t Love About the Disney Wish Staterooms

• There is less drawer space than on the other ships. There’s a big closet with a lots of shelving. But I prefer having the drawers.

And that’s really the only complaint I have about the staterooms!

Dining and Restaurants on the Disney Wish

As always with Disney Cruise Line, your dinner is at an assigned restaurants while for breakfast and lunch you are free to eat at either a sit-down restaurant or at the buffet. There are also two adults-only dining experiences on the Wish that you can add on for an extra charge.

Generally, I thought the food on the Wish was great! But I also think it depends on the dishes you order. Pay attention to what the specialty is (usually what your server recommends) at each restaurant!

Rotational Dining on the Wish

Disney assigns you a restaurant each night on a rotational basis (so you rotate to all the restaurants during your cruise). And the best part is that your servers rotate with you, so they really get to know you. Here are the three rotational restaurants on the Wish:

• 1923 — Themed to Disney animation and 1920s glamour (1923 was the year the Disney company was founded).
• Worlds of Marvel — An interactive restaurant themed after the Marvel universe.
• Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure — Dinner and a shower with Anna and Elsa.

Overall, I thought the food at each restaurant was pretty solid. It does depend on what you order though. My steak at 1923 and the meatballs at Arendelle are some of the best dishes on their respective menus. And my mother-in-law ordered the gnocchi at Worlds of Marvel and it was incredible (even though I don’t think that’s necessarily the dish they are known for).

Buffet Dining on the Wish

There are two options for buffet dining on the Wish. Marceline Market is the main restaurant and is open for breakfast and lunch, while Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods on the pool deck is open for lunch and dinner.

• Marceline Market — The food here was a pretty standard Disney cruise buffet. There were good things, there were mediocre things. Although I was disappointed that there were no Mickey churro waffles for breakfast and the ham and cheese croissants were only offered one morning.
• Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods — This is where you can grab lunch on the pool deck. There is BBQ, burgers, pizza, ice cream, and more. The food was fine, but the lines (especially for ice cream) could get LONG.

Adults-Only Dining on the Wish

The Wish has two adults-only dining experiences that you can book for an additional cost. (The rotational dining and buffets are included in your cruise).

• Enchanté — French food and subtly themed after Beauty and the Beast. We had brunch here and it was FANTASTIC and we actually though it was a pretty good value for what we got.
• Palo — You’ll find this Italian-themed restaurant on the other Disney cruise ships as well, and it’s a perennial favorite.

More Dining on the Disney Wish

Here are more places where you can get food and drinks on the Disney Wish:

• Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge — A SUPER fun Star Wars bar experience! You really have to experience it in person because the videos don’t do it justice.
• The Bayou — A Tiana themed lounge with drinks. It’s beautiful, but the beignets (for an extra cost) were NOT good. And I don’t really love that it feels like it’s in the middle of a hallway.
• The Rose — A hidden gem of a bar! It’s outside Enchanté and Palo and it has the BEST views!
• Nightingale’s — The piano bar on the Disney Wish.
• Keg and Compass — Very nautically themed, this is also where you can usually catch sports on TV.
• Triton’s Lounge — Mostly used for games and family-friendly activities, but they do have a small menu.
• Luna Lounge — Like Triton’s, Luna mostly used for entertainment, but Luna Lounge offers drinks.
• Preludes — Where to stop for pre-show drinks and popcorn (for an additional cost).
• Cove Cafe — In the adults-only section, and where you can get coffee.
• Enchanted Sword and Wishing Star Cafe — Two small bars on the ship (they aren’t even separate rooms) where you can get drinks, including specialty coffees.
• Inside Out: Joyful Sweets — A sweets and ice cream shop, but remember everything in here is an additional cost.
• Pool Deck Bars — There are lots of bars and drink options out on the pool deck, both in the family and the adults-only section.
• Room Service — Remember you can always get food delivered to your room! And most standard things are included in the price of your cruise! (Including Mickey Premium Bars!)

Pool Deck & Water Slides

So, I’ve seen some complaints about the pool deck on the Disney Wish. But for the most part, I LOVED the pool deck on this ship . This is something I think they managed to change and actually make better.

While most of the other Disney Cruise ships have one or two main pools to enjoy, the Disney Wish has six pools for families on the main deck, plus an adult-only pool and a quiet pool.

I LOVE how many pool options there were. Because if one pool is crowded, it’s pretty easy to find another pool that isn’t as crowded.

There are also several water slides on the Disney Wish. Overall, I give the waterslides a mediocre review though.

The AquaMouse was the exciting news for the Wish, since it is Disney’s first “attraction at sea.” To be honest though, while it’s fun and cute and has a storyline, most of the time is spent going up the ramp and watching the Mickey and Minnie videos. Which means your actual sliding time is relatively short, especially compared to the AquaDuck on the Dream and Fantasy.

The slightly tamer yellow slide on the Wish is called Slide-a-Saurus Rex , a callback to the Pixar short Party-Saurus Rex (a favorite in our house). It’s a pretty standard slide , though I did feel like it moved pretty slow.

There’s also a great Toy Story Splash Zone for the younger kids. And I love how it is enclosed behind a clear wall which means a) it’s harder for little ones to run off and b) it blocks some of the wind.

Activities & Entertainment

There is definitely no shortage of activities and entertainment on the Wish! And honestly, I thought all of it was fantastic! Even better than what we had seen on our previous cruise.

Broadway Style Shows

There are three Broadway style shows on the Disney Wish. And while I sometimes feel ambivalent about these shows, I thought all three were incredibly done.

• Seas the Adventure — A short (just about 30 minutes) show, which is mostly a way to have a medley of Disney songs and characters appear on stage. It’s cute, especially for kids! But for just adults, I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it.
• Aladdin — This show was fantastic! Normally I’m not a big fan of Disney-movie-retellings as shows. But I thoroughly enjoyed this one, especially the acrobatics of Magic Carpet and the updated humor of Genie.
• The Little Mermaid — Again, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this show, but I LOVED it. It’s just different enough from the movie, has some fun effects (especially how the lights indicate whether you are underwater or not) and the actress who played Ariel on our cruise was phenomenal.

Pirate Night

Pirate Night is a Disney Cruise staple. And while it was fun on the Wish, I didn’t find it was as fun as our previous cruise. They didn’t give us pirate bandanas at dinner, and the serving staff wasn’t dressed in pirate outfits, which I felt was a bit of a disappointment.

And while both of the stage shows on the pool deck were fun, I do wish fireworks had been included in the earlier kid-friendly show so that there was more than one opportunity to see them.

Day Time Entertainment

As usual, there are tons of entertainment options going on throughout the day around the ship. Cast members facilitate all kinds of events, from trivia, to animation classes, to whiskey tastings and more . My only complaints is that our favorite trivia (Disney Tunes Trivia) was only offered once on our sailing.

Also, don’t miss the Diaper Dash in the Hero Zone! It’s basically just a race of crawling babies, which didn’t sound that exciting to me, but it was so hilarious and an absolute blast!

You can also find live music around the ship during the evenings. We didn’t get to catch a lot of it, but what we did see was great! You’ll find musicians on the stage in the Grand Hall (atrium), and throughout the bars and lounges. Just check the Disney Navigator app for times.

Kid’s Club & Activities on the Disney Wish

The Oceaneers Club on the Wish is really unlike the kid’s clubs on any other ships. First of all, there is a SLIDE to get down to it from the Grand Hall. I mean, what kid doesn’t love that?

There are also tons of great areas in the kid’s club, including a Star Wars room, a Marvel room, a Princess Fairytale Hall, and a play area for toddlers. (Which, toddlers can’t go to the Oceaneers Club on their own, but there are lots of open house events where the whole family can enjoy the spaces!)

Everything was absolutely pristine in each section. And of course, I’m sure the Cast Members have great activities going on for the kids all the time.

The Edge and Vibe for tweens and teens are also new on this ships and look fantastic. We didn’t get to spend as much time in these spaces, but they’ve done a great job with them.

Service on the Disney Wish

Service on Disney cruises is always top-notch. However, I did feel like like our service on this ship wasn’t *quite* as good as on our cruise on the Magic.

Don’t get me wrong. It was great! But there were little details I noticed when we were on the Magic (like the fact that they cleaned our stateroom’s balcony handrail every day) that weren’t present on the Wish.

There were also some kinks in our service (like our stateroom getting skipped one evening during turndown, which I think was a dinner schedule snafu) that I’m thinking are things they will get worked out eventually. But they are also things that seem like they should have been worked out by now, over a year past the ship’s debut.

Disney Wish Itineraries

For the foreseeable future, the Wish only has two itineraries to choose from . A 3-night sailing from Friday to Monday, and a 4-night sailing from Monday to Friday.

Both of these itineraries go to Nassau and Disney’s Castaway Cay .

One of the drawbacks to the Wish is these limited sailings. To me, a 4 night cruise felt a little short. And I definitely wouldn’t choose a 3 night cruise if I had another option. I do wish they offered longer cruises and itineraries with more variety. I especially feel like slightly longer cruises would give the guests more time to get used the ship’s unusual layout.

Would I Sail on the Wish Again?

So, what’s our overall Disney Wish review? Honestly, the Wish wouldn’t be my first choice for another cruise.

The confusing ship combined with the higher price and the shorter itineraries just doesn’t feel worth it to me at this point. For our next cruise, in 2025, we’ve booked the Dream and I’m looking forward to being on a ship that is more classic Disney Cruise Line.

The Disney Treasure is going to debut in 2024 and I also won’t be rushing to book this. It’s going to have the same layout as the Wish, and while I’m sure the spaces will be awesome, the inflated price (because of the newness of the ship) isn’t worth it to me.

So, for now, you’ll find me on the older Disney Cruise ships more often than the newer ones!

The Disney Wish cruise experience is a magical one. From the moment we set sail, it was like being part of a fairy tale. The entertainment options were endless with Broadway-style shows, movies under the stars, and themed parties. Our room was spacious with beautiful views from our balcony.

WONDERLAND AND NEVER LAND CINEMAS

• Wonderland Cinema is a magical place inspired by Alice’s journey through the fantastical world of Wonderland. EDGE AND VIBE

Location in deck 5, the exclusive entrance to Edge is hidden behind a framed piece of art that reimagines world-famous paintings in a pop art-inspired compilation of Disney characters, including Minnie as the ‘Girl with the Pearl Earring’ and Donald as Salvador Dali.

• At Edge, tweens ages 11 to 14 can go have fun with friends, play games, and take pictures in a chic loft-inspired setting reminiscent of New York City. A faux-grass picnic area and graphic art displays called “photo walls” provide plenty of chances for tweens to snap envy-inducing vacation pics that they can share with their buddies back home.
• Come to Vibe and meet new friends! You can also watch movies, play games, and participate in activities created just for teens aged 14 to 17. This fun space is inspired by a Parisian artists’ loft, complete with retro elements like vibrant neon signs and funky pop art. Plus, the floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the ocean – perfect for taking selfies against beautiful backdrops.

THE HIDEAWAY

One of the newest, most luxurious features onboard Disney Wish is The Hideaway. This secluded area lets guests relax and unwind in style with stunning views of the crystal blue sea. Designed to be a true oasis, large cabanas with private balconies provide an exclusive escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Inside, you’ll find plush lounge seating for two, a 55-inch TV, and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the moment. The Hideaway also offers dedicated spa cabanas for those wishing for some extra pampering. Spa treatments available include relaxing massages and refreshing facials, perfect for unwinding after full days spent exploring the ship’s many activities.

DISNEY WISH RECREATION

Disney Cruise Line takes fun in the sun to the next level on the Disney Wish with the debut of AquaMouse, a brand-new family water attraction that brings to life the adventures of  The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse  animated shorts like never before. Additionally, three uniquely themed districts offer fun water features, quick and casual dining options, and dedicated space for families, children, and adults to relax and soak up the sun.

Families will be immersed in  The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse Make a Wish animated shorts aboard  AquaMouse , the first-ever Disney attraction at sea.

Complete with show scenes, lighting and special effects, and splashtacular surprises, this first-of-its-kind water ride sends guests on a fun family adventure through 760 feet of winding tubes suspended high above the upper decks.

As The Story Goes

Mickey and Minnie are starting their very own seaside excursion company — aptly named  Port Misadventures  — onboard the Disney Wish, and adventuresome cruisers will join them on an undersea excursion to Mermaid Lagoon that will inevitably (and hilariously) go awry.

The journey begins when guests board their two-seater ride vehicles and ascend into a magical tunnel that will teleport them into the cartoon world of  Scuba Scramble , a new animated short that plays out through oversized virtual portholes.

Along the way, they’ll encounter curious sea creatures, familiar Disney friends, and more than 60 water effects that bring the subaquatic hijinks to life – all perfectly synched to an original musical score by Emmy-nominated composer Christopher Willis ( The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse ).

At the height of the show, guests will blast out of the tunnel and embark on a wild water ride around the upper decks. First, they’ll zip into the forward funnel through an enclosed tube surrounded by dazzling lighting effects, followed by a quick dash through a dark tunnel that opens up to reveal breathtaking views of the ocean.

They’ll then jet up and down a series of speed blasters as they are propelled toward the grand finale: a soaring loop over the edge of the ship, with clear views down to the deep blue sea. With that, they’ll splash down for a sendoff message from Mickey and Minnie – another successful tour in the books!

Fun In The Sun For The Whole Family

In addition to AquaMouse, families will have more pools, more deck space, and more dining than ever before in an expansive pool district themed to Mickey and friends.

Located on decks 11 and 12 midship, this area includes six pools of various sizes and depths, spaciously staggered among tiered decks and surrounded by lounge chairs to provide families with space to stretch out and soak up the sunshine. TOY STORY SPLASH ZONE

Little ones can go to “swim”-infinity and beyond in a new  Toy Story -themed waterplay district designed especially for families with toddlers and young children.

Children can have a tub-full of fun in the  Toy Story  Splash Zone , a fantastical water playground where Woody, Buzz, and friends have been adorably reimagined as larger-than-life rubber bath toys that move and spray water at kids’ whim.

Inspired by the Disney and Pixar short “Partysaurus Rex,” this bathtub-themed splash zone combines the Old West of Woody’s Roundup with the intergalactic world of Buzz Lightyear, featuring two toddler-sized slides and pop jets, geysers, and bubblers galore.

Disney Cruise Special Offers – Updated April 1, 2024

There are several different types of Disney Cruise Special offers that are available right now.

Some are open to the general public, whilst others are available for Florida Residents, Military Personnel, and Canadian Residents.

The amount of military discounts available has increased considerably this week to a total of 17 – almost double what was available last week.

Surprisingly this week there are some special offers for cruises sailing in 2025. I don’t think I have ever seen this happen that far in advance.

There is also another Disney Wish sailing added for this week.

There are a good number of deals available for everyone including European and Alaskan cruises.

It is also interesting that they are already offering deals on the Fall 2024 Transpacific sailings. These repositioning cruises often do become discounted, but this is usually much closer to the sail date. At the moment these are just for those eligible for military discounts but it will be interesting to see if they are offered to all soon.

Whilst there were no Florida resident offers last week they are back this week with one sailing on offer.

Disney Wish Sailings

It is quite unusual to see special offers for Disney Wish sailings, but another one has been added for this week of a 3 night sailing.

3 Night Disney Wish Bahamian Cruise

• Port Canaveral, Florida
• Castaway Cay

This is sailing on May 31, 2024 and June 14, 2024 for VGT staterooms with up to 20% off.

4 Night Disney Wish Bahamian Cruise

• Port Canaveral Florida
• Port Canaveral

The available dates are June 3 and June 10, 2024, for VGT staterooms at up to 20% off.

Disney Fantasy Sailings from Port Canaveral

7 night western caribbean cruise.

Discounts on Disney Fantasy cruises from Cape Canaveral.

Sailing on Friday, May 18, 2024, with savings of up to 25% on a VGT stateroom. This sailing has been available at a discount for a number of weeks now.

Disney Wonder

Disney wonder sailing from san diego.

The Disney Wonder 7-night sailing offer that we had seen for quite a few weeks is no longer available.

No current offers for sailing out of San Diego.

Disney Alaska Sailings

It is rare to see discounts on Disney Wonder Alaska sailings but right now there is one sailing in June with an offerl

The May cruises that we have seen with offers for quite some time are no longer available. There is a 25% discount on an Oceanview Guarantee for the June 24, 2024 sailing.

New for this week is the 9 night Alaska cruise from Vancouver. This sails on July 15, 2024. I was surprised to see this one as usually the longer sailings sell out more quickly as they are rarely offered.

It is interesting to look at the opening day rates for the Alaska 2025 season and see how the rates change between dates:

Disney Dream Sailings

Some sailings from Fort Lauderdale have been added this week.

There are two, 5 Night Western Caribbean sailings with an offer.

Disney Dream is sailing from Fort Lauderdale until she sails to Europe in May 2024. These are for the sailings on 9 June, 2024 and 6 July, 2024 with a 25% discount.

The discounts we have seen in previous weeks are no longer available and there are currently no other special offers for the general public from Fort Lauderdale.

5 Night Western Caribbean Cruise from Galveston

These are a bit of a surprise, to say the least – cruises for 2025.

Deals are already being offered on 5-night cruises sailing on Western Caribbean cruises sailing on 19 and 24 January 2025. I think that is the first time I have ever seen guarantee rates available that far ahead.

You can also get a stateroom guarantee rate for the 4-night western Caribbean Disney Dream sailing from Galveston on January 29, 2024.

Disney Cruise Europe Sailings

Here we see some sailings from Civitavecchia, Rome being added, as well as the other European cruises that have been available for a while.

There are a surprising number of cruises to Europe available for these special rates. The prices of Disney European cruises are traditionally high and show no sign of decreasing if you look at these opening day rates for Europe 2025.

New for this week is the 7 night Western Europe cruise from Barcelona to Southampton. This sails on July 17, 2024.

There are also savings of up to 25% can also be found on the 12-night Norwegian Fjords and Iceland Cruise. This sails on July 24, 2024, from Southampton.

New for the previous week was the 9-night Mediterranean Cruise with Greek Isles sailing from Barcelona and ending in Civitavecchia sailing on June 1. 2024.

New or last week was the 7-night Mediterranean Cruise from Barcelona sailing on July 5, 2024.

Added this week is another European cruise.

Deals are now available on the 11-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles Cruise . This sails from Civitavecchia on 24 June and ends in Barcelona.

Australian and New Zealand Cruises

Disney Wonder has been sailing in Australia and New Zealand for her first season since October 2023. Many of the cruises were sold out, but as we often see with these offers.

As the season has ended with Disney Wonder sailing back to the West Coast, there are no current offers for Australian or New Zealand Disney cruises.

Having sailed four of Disney Cruise Line’s five ships, I can say the experience is indeed special — especially if you have kids. But Disney’s not a one-trick cruise line that’s only good for one age group. It offers kids clubs and activities to suit babies through teens and has several adults-only areas of the ship . Its newest ship, Disney Wish , provides more cool spaces for adults than any previous vessel.

Disney’s attention to detail transfers to its voyages on the sea. But unlike at the Disney theme parks, which can be a bit complicated to navigate, long lines and complex strategies are rarely a part of the Disney cruise experience.

What we could do without

• Disney cruises are expensive.
• The onboard Wi-Fi is not the fastest, especially on ships that haven’t been upgraded. And it’s not cheap.

Disney Cruise Line fleet

While Disney may be a household name, Disney Cruise Line is actually a small line. It currently sails just five ships, compared to 27 at its family-friendly competitor Royal Caribbean .

Of the five, two are smaller ships, and three are larger.

The largest ships in Disney’s fleet are Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, at 1,115 feet long and 14 decks high, and Disney Wish , at 1,119 feet and 15 decks high.

These three ships each have a passenger capacity of 4,000 people spread out across approximately 1,250 cabins. The overwhelming majority of cabins on these ships have an ocean view or private verandah, with only 10%-12% being windowless inside cabins. (On its oldest four ships, these interior rooms have a “magical porthole” that displays a live feed from outside to replicate a window.)

Disney Treasure , expected to join the fleet in 2024, will be in the same larger Triton class of ships as Disney Wish.

Disney Wish is currently a workhorse of short three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral , Florida, to the Bahamas, home to Disney’s private island , Castaway Cay.

Disney Fantasy often sails weeklong cruises out of Florida. With the addition of Disney Wish to the fleet, Disney Dream now spends its summer across the Atlantic, offering European cruises from May to September, then spending much of the rest of the year based out of Fort Lauderdale.

The smaller two ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet are Disney Wonder and the line’s first ship, Disney Magic .

These two ships are 984 feet long and 11 decks high, and each has the capacity for 2,713 passengers across 875 staterooms. On these two smaller ships, 70% of passenger cabins have ocean views or verandahs.

Disney Wonder is often on the move and currently splits its time among Alaska , the South Pacific, Hawaii, California, Mexico and beyond. Disney Magic spends part of its year based out of Galveston, Texas, or New Orleans and much of the rest based out of Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Disney Cruise Line destinations and itineraries

Disney Cruise Line has about 370 annual departures scheduled that range from two- to 15-night sailings. Many new-to-Disney itineraries have recently become available as the line is adding new ships for the first time in a decade.

Disney Cruise Line destinations include:

• New Zealand
• Pacific Coast
• South Pacific

Disney Wish has, by far, the highest number of annual sailings, with 105 three- and four-night cruises departing from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas. These sailings all go to Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay; some also stop in Nassau, Bahamas.

Some Disney cruises do what’s called a “double dip” and make two stops at the private island, where you can step ashore without leaving the Disney bubble.

Pro tip: If you go to Castaway Cay, rent a bike for a little exercise and a self-guided tour of the island. Or, you can run the at-your-pace 5K that morning around the island.

Coming in summer 2024 , Disney will have a second exclusive beach destination in the Bahamas — Lighthouse Point.

This won’t be an entire private island like Castaway Cay, but it will be an exclusive beachfront space designed for Disney Cruise Line with many similar offerings to Castaway. Disney Magic, Disney Wonder and Disney Fantasy will call on this new destination for the first time in 2024.

Who sails Disney Cruise Line?

Let’s start with the obvious: Families love Disney Cruise Line.

The ultimate sweet spot for taking a Disney cruise starts when a child is at least 3 years old and potty trained (the criteria that get them into the included kids clubs) and lasts until they outgrow their love of Disney characters. Remember, Disney now includes the “Star Wars” and Marvel brands and offers themed cruises featuring those characters, too.

A Disney cruise costs more than a similar cruise on a line like Royal Caribbean , so it’s easiest to justify the expense when your kids love Disney the most.

So, yes, the stereotype that Disney Cruise Line is full of families is 100% correct.

You’ll see many families with kids in those preschool, elementary and middle school years. But you’ll also see families with little babies (the minimum age is 6 months on most sailings, 1 year on Panama Canal and transatlantic sailings), tweens, teens, college-age kids and even grandparents who have made a Disney cruise an enjoyable multigenerational travel tradition.

You’ll also see cruisers who love Disney regardless of age and are proud to wear their Mickey ears while hearing the first seven notes of the “When You Wish Upon a Star” melody blown from the ship’s massive horn.

Just like you don’t need kids to have a great time at Disney World or Disneyland, you can happily cruise as adults without offspring on Disney Cruise Line. All the ships have active adults-only sun decks, pool and lounges. Disney Wish especially invested in its adult offerings with an infinity pool, along with more bars spread around the ship instead of being clustered into one main area.

Disney Cruise Line cabins and suites

At a basic level, Disney Cruise Line offers five main types of cabins across the fleet. In its simplified version, the types of cabins on a Disney cruise include:

• Windowless inside cabins
• Ocean-view cabins
• Verandah cabins (with private balconies)
• Verandah cabins with concierge service
• Suites with concierge service

These cabins start at 169 square feet for a standard inside cabin and go up to a two-story, 1,966-square-foot Tower Suite on Disney Wish .

Unless you are OK with the smallest space on the ship or have a budget for the largest, the sweet spot for price and comfort on Disney Cruise Line vessels is probably the cabins that are around 204 square feet and usually come with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa and upper-berth pull-down bed and a split bath.

This split bathroom situation places a sink and the shower/tub combo in one bathroom and the toilet and another sink in the other. Each has its own separate door, so someone could use the toilet/sink room while another takes a shower, all in private and at the same time.

You’ll find this cabin layout within the Deluxe Inside Staterooms, Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms and Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms with Verandah categories.

The Deluxe Family Oceanview Staterooms and Deluxe Family Oceanview Staterooms with Verandah add about 40 more square feet to the equation. If you want the largest within those room categories, search for rooms that can hold five people on the Disney Cruise Line website.

Pro tip: You can ask your cabin host for cartoon bedding for the kid’s bed if you think your child will be excited to come back from dinner to one of their Disney favorites.

You can connect many of the cabins on the ship , which is often a much more economical solution for a family looking for more sleeping space (and bathrooms) than upgrading to a multibedroom suite. Roughly speaking, a family of four will pay about 50% more for two cabins than they will for everyone to stay in one cabin of the same size.

If you are going all-out on a particular trip, or are simply working with a larger budget, Disney concierge suites are special.

The smallest available room with this service is the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah, which isn’t all that different from the Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah, other than the included concierge service. From there, you can go up to the one- or two-bedroom suites.

Be prepared for sticker shock, though, as these suites will almost certainly be near or over five figures on many sailings.

While pricey, Disney concierge service eliminates almost all of the potential pain points of a Disney cruise (not that there are many pain points to begin with).

Disney concierge service gets you access to the Disney Concierge Lounge, which has food offerings multiple times per day and a fully stocked fridge with sodas, juices and bottles of water.

In the evenings, you’ll find included beer, wine and spirits in the lounge — which you can also take with you as you head out to dinner or to enjoy the view from the deck.

The Concierge Lounge also has its own private deck, and Disney characters have been known to make a private appearance there during the cruise. (Don’t worry, you’ll get a heads-up.)

You also have your own check-in area at the port and are among the first to board the ship, which can mean extra time to enjoy having the waterslides to yourself. At the end of the cruise, you can have a private elevator that takes you down to be some of the first off the ship — which should protect you from a long line to say goodbye.

There are other perks of the concierge level, too, such as early front-row seating at shows, included popcorn and the ability to submit your request for meal reservations at Palo or Remy, cabanas on Castaway Cay, spa treatments, character meet-and-greets or whatever else you wish before other guests. These can be made for you starting 120 days before your sailing, which is before all other guests except those with the highest elite status tier in the Castaway Club .

Passengers on their first Disney cruise don’t get to make those reservations until 75 days out if they aren’t in the concierge level. The reality is the hottest items are often booked up by then, especially on shorter cruises when there’s less time to do everything.

Those in the concierge level in one-bedroom suites and higher can also order room service from the restaurants to their cabin, which means you can have a hot breakfast on your verandah if you wish instead of the regular continental options available to most guests.

If you are on the fence about concierge service, it’s arguably most valuable when you are on a shorter cruise, have some specific popular must-have items on your reservation wish list or want someone else to take care of everything. You can also inquire about discounted upgrades at the port, assuming rooms are left unsold on your voyage.

Pro tip: Regardless of your cabin, bring magnetic Mickey or nautical-themed decor for the entrance, as most of the cabin doors are magnetic. Decorating is a fun tradition on a Disney cruise.

Disney Cruise Line restaurants and dining options

You will not go hungry on a Disney cruise. From room service to evening dinners, meals are (mostly) all included.

Rotational dining

On each Disney ship, three main dining rooms serve as dinner restaurants that participate in rotational dining. Each ship has its own lineup of themed rotational restaurants, but the concept remains the same on each.

Each night, your tablemates and servers will move from one restaurant to the next as a team. This way, the servers get to know that you always want to start with a glass of red wine, or your kids’ food needs to come ASAP so you can take them to the kids club as soon as they finish, or (in my case) your daughter wants a side of barbecue sauce with … everything.

You must choose between an early and a late dinner time, with your showtime opposite your dining time. Some restaurants, such as Animator’s Palate, are found on multiple ships, while others are unique to one ship, such as Tiana’s Place on Disney Wonder and all of the rotational restaurants found on Disney Wish .

At these restaurants, you can order whatever you want on the menu at no extra charge, with a few exceptions (for example, alcohol and specialty drinks cost extra).

While many guests dress up a bit for dinner (compared to their afternoon pool deck attire), most stay relatively casual for the rotational dining restaurants. Disney does not impose a specific dress-up requirement.

Disney cruise ships offer many other dining options beyond the three included themed restaurants — most included, some not.

Room service

Room service is mostly free (other than sodas or alcohol), though the menu is limited if you aren’t staying in a concierge-level cabin. Still, it’s free room service, so I’m not one to complain.

Pro tip: Fill the breakfast card out the night before and hang it on your stateroom to get breakfast exactly when you want it the next morning.

And you haven’t lived until your kids learn how to call and order free Mickey ice cream bars to the cabin … every night (just be sure and add a tip).

Buffet and grab-and-go

Your Disney cruise will also include a buffet known as Cabanas on the original four ships and Marceline Market on Disney Wish. The buffet is usually open for breakfast and lunch, though not in the evening hours.

In addition to the buffet, a few grab-and-go quick-service restaurants on the pool deck serve salads, chili, pizza, barbecue and more, depending on which ship you’re sailing.

Don’t miss these options, as some are quite good. They are typically open from late morning until later into the evening.

Room service, the buffet and the on-deck food counter dining options don’t cost extra and are available to you in addition to or instead of your rotational dining.

You’ll also find included ice cream on one of the upper decks. A pro-level hack is to get Mickey churro waffles from the buffet in the morning (only available some mornings) and add vanilla ice cream for a vacation-worthy breakfast.

Extra-cost, adults-only restaurants

At the top of the “costs extra” list are the restaurants Palo (found on all five ships, though it’s Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish), Remy (on Dream and Fantasy) and Enchante (only on Disney Wish).

Remy is a fancy adults-only French restaurant that costs $125 per person for dinner (more if you order drinks). This is the type of place where men need jackets and women are expected to wear dresses, pantsuits or a skirt and blouse. Enchante on Disney Wish is similar — you’re dressing up for these meals.

Palo is also fancy, though a notch less fancy than Remy. You’ll see jackets and dresses in Palo, but you can also get by with nice jeans if you want. This adults-only restaurant serves Northern Italian fare and starts at about $45 per person for a multicourse brunch or dinner, though you can also order a la carte for dinner, which could cost more or less, depending on your order.

I can say with 100% certainty that if you enjoy a nice meal, this is worth the extra $45 once during your cruise . From the breadbasket to the dessert, it’s all amazing. You’ll gain 5 pounds, but you won’t regret a bite.

These reservations are hard to get, especially for brunch, so you’ll want to make them the second you are eligible and keep checking back for cancellations if you miss out the first time.

Coffee shops and snack shops

On a Disney cruise, the snacks and pastries you’ll see in the coffee shop or kiosk are all included, but the specialty coffee will cost extra. Drink prices are roughly similar to Starbucks, if not a notch lower. Be sure and ask for the Cafe Fanatic card if you’re a regular, as your sixth drink will be free.

In addition to the included soft-serve ice cream and Mickey bars available via room service, your ship may have some shops with extra-fee ice cream. This can confuse kids, so I want to warn you beforehand. On Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish, you’ll find an ice cream shop stuffed with candies, gelato and ice cream — all for an extra charge.

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy also have a juice bar that costs extra.

The exact bars will vary by vessel, but you can expect spots like a wine and Champagne bar, a pub, a laid-back lounge and a bar with live entertainment.

These bars are a lot of fun and are not to be missed if you like live music or a nice drink at the end of the day. Keep an eye out in your app for when and where the happy hours are on board if you want to save a few dollars on your drinks. Some bars also offer a sommelier bin where you get a nice glass of wine at a discounted price — as long as you put the bartender in charge of choosing your drink.

Some of the drink-tasting classes that you book in advance can be a good value if you’re a fan of the drink on offer and are interested in learning a little bit while you sip. You’ll want to book these before sailing, as many do sell out.

Food on Castaway Cay

If your cruise takes you to Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, you’re in luck, as there’s plenty of included food to eat there, too.

Just like on board, some of the food on Castaway is included, while alcohol and specialty drinks are not. The Cookie’s and Cookie’s Too lunch shacks on the island are both included, so load up on hot dogs, barbecue, hamburgers, fries and all the fixings. Vegetarian options are available.

While the food options here are somewhat basic, they still make for a fun and free meal.

Entertainment and activities on a Disney cruise

A valid reason to want to sail with Disney is the onboard fun that awaits — especially for those who love Disney characters and stories.

Theaters and shows

Each Disney cruise ship features two theaters. In the massive Walt Disney Theatre, you’ll enjoy Broadway-caliber evening shows such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Frozen,” “Tangled,” “Disney Dreams,” “The Golden Mickeys” and more. If you want a good seat, arrive about 30 minutes early since seating is first come, first served.

The Buena Vista Theatre screens first-run Disney films. These will be the same films still showing in theaters on land. If you happen to be at sea when a new Disney movie premieres on land, you’ll also get that same first look at sea.

Pirate Night is a staple on many Disney cruises in the Caribbean. On that themed night, expect everyone to be dressed in their pirate-y best for the evening, so pack accordingly. Your dinner will also have a pirate theme, followed by a fun show up on deck, complete with fireworks.

Pro tip: If you plan to stay up late for Pirate Night, try to work in a nap that afternoon so you don’t miss out on the nighttime fun.

Game shows, karaoke, bingo and more

The extensive lineup of interactive game shows, trivia, karaoke, dance parties, bingo and more listed in the Disney cruise app are worth checking out. Some of these are adults-only, while others are fun for the whole family. Most are included in the price of the cruise, though bingo does cost extra — and you could win real money.

Other interior attractions and activities

Meeting Disney characters is a fun part of a Disney cruise.

You can make reservations to meet the popular princesses, but most characters are easy to walk up to and meet via a short line. Or, even better, you often see them roaming about the ship at unexpected times.

You can work off some of those treats and drinks at the onboard fitness center on each ship.

The Senses Spa & Salon is a full-service spa with everything from massages to pedicures and hair care. Promotions are available if you book more than one treatment. If you have a Disney Visa card , you can also save 20% on select onboard services.

Pro tip: The showers in this part of the ship are full-size, in case you are getting a bit claustrophobic in the shower in your cabin.

If you like getting away to relax, look at purchasing access to the Rainforest Room for heated stone loungers, aromatherapy showers and even hot tubs on the larger ships. You can buy a one-day or full-cruise pass to this area of the spa, but get a tour first as the layout and inclusions in this space vary dramatically from ship to ship.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

Little cruisers can be transformed into a princess or pirate at sea at the onboard Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, which does themed kid makeovers and sells costumes as part of the package. You’ll need an appointment; expect to pay $100 to $200 for most packages.

This is a fun thing to do before meeting a princess, before a more formal night or anytime you want to see a huge smile on your kid’s face. If you have a princess dress or outfit from home you want to use or reuse, you can purchase a cheaper package at Bibbidi Bobbidi.

Decktop attractions

Waterslides.

All of Disney Cruise Line’s ships have some kind of waterslide on board.

The AquaDuck waterslide on Dream and Fantasy takes riders in single or double tubes 765 feet from Deck 12 up and down, through the forward funnel and on a four-deck drop. It’s pretty epic. AquaMouse on Disney Wish is also an inner tube-based ride and is not to be missed.

These lines can get long, so I recommend riding first thing when you board if the port is warm enough. Nighttime rides usually have short waits, too.

Disney Magic has the most thrilling waterslide in the fleet, called AquaDunk, and Disney Wonder has its own waterslide in the AquaLab splash area.

Each Disney ship has multiple pools, though if you’ve never been on a cruise, you may be initially shocked at how small they are — and how busy they can get.

As with the waterslides, we recommend enjoying these first thing when you board if you want to try them without crowds. Otherwise, you won’t find so many people in the pools on port days, early in the morning and right before dinner. There are thousands of people on the ship and only a few small pools, so plan accordingly.

Each ship has a pool and hot tub area for adults 18 and up. It can also get busy, but typically less busy than the family area. Select ships also offer an in-pool bar area for adults.

The adult sun deck is a nice place to grab a chair and relax, even if you have no intention of getting in the water.

Splash pads

Your little one has to be potty trained to use the onboard pools. The option for those still in swim diapers is some splash areas, such as Nemo’s Reef and Dory’s Reef.

Sports deck

If you want to be more active, head to your ship’s sports deck to play basketball, foosball, miniature golf and more. You may even have some sports simulator options beyond your traditional in-person fun.

Children’s programs

As a parent, my favorite part of a Disney cruise might be the included kids programs that children actually want to attend. If the kids are happy for a few hours, the parents can actually relax, too.

Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab for children ages 3–12

All five Disney ships have amazing spaces for kids in the 3-to-12-year-old range in the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab.

Here you’ll find video games, an indoor slide, fun programs and games with the staff, arts and crafts, surprise character visits and more. Your kids need to be potty trained to stay in this club, so use that as motivation for a kid approaching 3 years old before your next cruise.

Your kids don’t need an appointment to pop in here; they can come anytime from open to close — and the club stays open pretty late.

Parents can stay with kids and play during open hours on the first day and select times on other dates, but most of the time, the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are kids-only. Your kids will check in and out by scanning a special MagicBand that also tracks where they are within the kids clubs.

Disney Wish has the added perk in the kids club of a slide that takes the kids straight from the main atrium and into the fun.

Know that once your child turns 8, you have the option of giving them self-checkout privileges. While kids up to 12 are welcome in the main Oceaneer Club, they may start moving up to the tween club by the time they are 10 years old.

Edge tween club for children ages 11–14

When your kid outgrows the fun in the main kids club, don’t worry. Edge is waiting just upstairs.

Technically, Edge is for kids ages 11-14, but you can get your 10-year-old in with permission — and once they figure that out, it’s probably all over for the “little kid club.”

Edge is a much smaller space, but tweens have tons of fun playing video games, having dance parties, doing crafts, playing trivia games and more with their newfound cruise friends.

This club does not utilize parent sign-in and -out, so you need to trust your kid if they are coming to Edge. If your 10-to-12-year-old child visits Edge, they can also play at the Oceaneer Lab and Oceaneer Club, so they have options.

Vibe teen club for children ages 14–17

Get ready to be jealous of this one. On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, the teen club has its own set of small pools at the front of the ship.

Inside all versions of the teen club, Vibe, you’ll find a tech-friendly world with loungers, dance parties, smoothies and other teen-approved fun. Some of the coolest inside space on Disney cruise ships is dedicated to teens ages 14-17, but you can request for your child to attend this club starting at 13 years old.

‘It’s a small world’ nursery for children 6 months to 3 years old

While the three previously mentioned kids clubs are free and do not require reservations, the nursery operates differently. You will need to make reservations, and the fee is $4.50 per half-hour for the first child and $4 per half-hour for each additional child.

What to know before you go

Required documents.

The specific documents you will need will vary by cruise destination. Having a passport is always a good idea, but it’s not technically required on all Disney cruises. For example, round-trip cruises originating in Port Canaveral, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, San Diego, New Orleans, New York and San Juan, Puerto Rico, often do not require a passport.

Passports, when required, must be valid for at least six months. For cruises from international ports, you’ll need a passport. Note that it is important that the name on your reservation be exactly as it is stated on your passport or other official proof of nationality.

Disney Cruise Line adds a service gratuity of $14.50 per person per day to final bills. If you are unhappy with the service you receive, you can lower this amount. Of course, you can visit guest services and adjust it upward, too.

To give an idea of the cost, a four-person family on a four-night cruise would pay $232 in recommended tips. The amount is split among your team of dining room servers who quickly learned your kids’ preferences for dinner and your cabin hosts who made your room look like magic while you were out enjoying yourself.

An 18% gratuity is added to onboard spa, bar, beverage, wine and deck service tabs. You can always add an additional gratuity for any of your services or servers.

While room service is free, it’s customary to add a few dollars of tip when you sign the “bill.”

While some gratuity is included at Palo and Remy, you’ll likely want to add an additional tip if you enjoyed the service. If you stay in a concierge-level room or suite, it is customary to tip the Concierge Lounge hosts at the end of your cruise a recommended amount of $8 per night per guest.

Disney Cruise Line’s Wi-Fi, Connect@Sea, is in the process of being upgraded, so speed, bandwidth and cost vary by ship.

If you are on a ship that charges by day instead of by the amount of data used, expect the prices to vary from $12-$36 per day, depending on the speed you select. There are often discounts for buying Wi-Fi access for the length of the cruise.

If you are on a ship that still charges by the amount of data used, we recommend not doing that and connecting either when you are in port or via a plan from your cellphone provider.

Carry-on drinks policy

Guests 21 years and older may bring a maximum of two bottles of unopened wine or Champagne (no larger than 750 milliliters) or six beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage. You can keep drinks chilled in the small fridge in your cabin.

Guests wishing to consume wine or Champagne that they have brought on board in one of the dining rooms will be charged a corkage fee of $26 per bottle.

Smoking policy

Smoking is permitted only in designated deck areas. It’s forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 cleaning fee.

For an additional fee, Disney ships offer full-service laundry and dry cleaning services that will pick up and deliver clean clothes to your cabin.

Ships also provide 24-hour, self-service guest laundry facilities equipped with washers and dryers, along with detergent and complimentary ironing equipment. You pay for the facilities by using your Key to the World card. These services can get busy during sea days on longer cruises, so plan accordingly.

Electrical outlets

All cabins are equipped with multiple 110-volt outlets, which are standard in the U.S. and Canada. Cabins on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy are equipped with a combination of 110- and 220-volt (European) outlets.

Small electrical appliances such as electric shavers, curling irons and flat irons with standard North American plugs will function on board; 110-volt items should not exceed 1,500 watts, and 220-volt items should not exceed 2,000 watts. A hair dryer is provided in every cabin for your convenience, but you may bring your own as long as it meets the guidelines above.

The currency on Disney Cruise Line ships, regardless of location, is the U.S. dollar.

When you are on the ship, you will not need cash or a credit card — all incidentals, purchases and services will be charged to your cabin folio. Your Key to the World card (or your DisneyBand+ on Disney Wish ) serves as your onboard payment method. The only exception is if you want to tip a crew member in cash.

In port, you may wish to carry cash or a credit card to buy snacks and souvenirs or to tip your tour guide.

Drinking age

For most Disney sailings, the drinking age on board is 21.

However, on round-trip cruises departing European countries with a lower drinking age, passengers 18-20 years of age can drink alcohol on board with signed parental consent. For round-trip cruises from Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Brisbane, guests 18 years of age and older may purchase and consume alcoholic beverages without parental consent.

During the day, people dress casually. If it’s a sea day in a warm-weather destination, and you’re bound for the top deck, that means looking like you’re going to the beach. T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside) are fine.

During the evenings, dining attire in the three main dining restaurants is “cruise casual,” meaning no swimwear or tank tops, but you don’t have to put on a party dress. That said, many guests do dress up a bit in the evening, but it’s not required unless you are dining in Palo, Remy or Enchante.

Cruises that are seven nights or longer schedule one “formal night” — though even then, it’s only encouraged, not required. On that night, you will see suits, sports coats, cocktail dresses and similar from some guests.

Disney Cruise Line loyalty program

Disney Cruise Line has a simple loyalty program, the Castaway Club , with four “elite status” levels that you earn based on how many cruises you’ve taken with Disney. A three-night and 10-night cruise both count as one sailing for these purposes.

• Silver: One completed cruise
• Gold: Five completed cruises
• Platinum: 10 completed cruises
• Pearl: 25 completed cruises

This isn’t the kind of loyalty program where you earn free cruises the way you earn free flights with airline miles. Instead, as you go up in status, you earn perks and earlier access to booking cruises and activities — which is key for getting those hard-to-snag adult dining or Castaway Cay cabana reservations

Silver members

• Book new cruise itineraries one day before the general public and book onboard activities 90 days before sailing.
• Get a “welcome back aboard” gift (such as a bag), have access to a Castaway Club members-only line when boarding and access to a Castaway Club direct phone number.
• Select port arrival time with online check-in starting 33 days before the general public.

Gold members

• All of those perks, but you can book new sailings two days before the general public and can book onboard activities 105 days before sailing.
• On eight-night and longer voyages, Gold Castaway Club members are also invited to a private reception with special entertainment. There are also select merchandise discounts available to Gold members and higher.
• Select port arrival time with online check-in starting 35 days before the general public.

Platinum members

• All of those perks, but you can book new sailings three days before the general public and can book onboard activities 120 days before sailing.
• Priority check-in at the cruise terminal.
• Complimentary evening dinner at Palo or Palo Steakhouse for themselves and everyone in the cabin age 18 and older.
• Select port arrival time with online check-in starting 38 days before the general public.

Pearl members

• All of those perks, but you can book new sailings four days before the general public and can book onboard activities 123 days before sailing.
• Exclusive cruise terminal check-in (where available)
• Unlimited Digital Photo Package.
• Select port arrival time with online check-in starting 40 days before the general public.

How much does a Disney cruise cost?

Magic ain’t cheap, and Disney cruises are expensive. They aren’t the priciest voyages out there, but they will cost more than cruises with family-friendly competitors such as Royal Caribbean by a noticeable margin.

For a family of four, the cheapest Disney cruise currently available (not counting the two-night cruises in Australia and New Zealand) is about $2,500. An ocean view will add about $90 and a verandah will add about $500.

On these shortest cruises, concierge-level cabins and access start at a little over $5,000 for a family of four.

Those sorts of prices will only be available during the offseason, such as in mid-to-late January and early February or for repositioning cruises as the ship moves from, say, Puerto Rico to Florida. That same cruise during spring break can cost double or more, so the more date flexibility you have, the better.

A seven-night cruise in the Caribbean will likely start around $5,000 for a family of four. Expect Alaska and Europe cruises to start at $5,000 to $6,000 for inside cabins for a week, and prices go up for longer sailings and upgraded cabins.

You can save money on your next Disney cruise by putting a $250 deposit down while you are at sea on a previous Disney cruise. It’s a popular way to get 10% off your next cruise.

Another way to save on a Disney cruise is to look at a one-way repositioning sailing , as those often price lower than other similar cruises. For example, the cruise line may need to end a cruise in a particular port to reposition the ship to do some sailings from there. You’ll have to get yourself back home from that port, but you may save on the cruise in the process.

How to book

You can book your Disney cruise directly with Disney Cruise Line either over the phone or online, but I’d argue you shouldn’t.

Cruises are easy to enjoy but can be complicated to plan if you are new to this type of travel. This is an industry where a travel agent is still a good call. You want someone who can help you pick the right cabin type and location for your group and keep track of when you can snag those onboard activities you really want.

When the wave of pandemic-related cruise cancellations hit in 2020, I was so grateful to have a travel agent — instead of me — spending time dealing with the cruise line.

Another reason to consider going through a travel agent is to get onboard credit. Some travel agents will offer onboard credit based on the amount you spend on your Disney cruise. This is credit you can use toward drinks, spa treatments, excursions or anything else you can charge to your room.

Generally speaking, the sooner you book a Disney cruise after it goes on sale, the better, as prices usually only go in one direction — up.

Bottom line

Whether you are on a three-night trip to Castaway Cay or a bigger crossing to the South Pacific, a Disney cruise is a special vacation that actually feels like a vacation.

The classic styling of the original four ships, the modern storybook styling of Disney Wish, the vast number of inclusions, the rotational dining, waterslides, private island, fun kids clubs, Disney characters, high-caliber entertainment and Disney service shine through.

You’ll certainly pay more for the privilege of sailing with Mickey and Minnie than with some other family-friendly lines. But for those with kids in that Disney age range, or for adults who know and trust the Disney brand, it’s hard to go wrong in choosing Disney Cruise Line for your next vacation.
