What Is the Vision and Mission of Department of Tourism?

By Anna Duncan

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is a government agency in charge of promoting the Philippines as a tourist destination locally and internationally. The DOT’s vision is to be the leading catalyst for the sustainable growth, development, and competitiveness of the Philippine tourism industry. Meanwhile, its mission is to champion sustainable tourism development for inclusive growth and the global promotion of the Philippines as a world-class destination.

What is DOT?

The DOT was established in 1973 to promote tourism in the Philippines. It aims to develop and market tourism products and services that showcase the country’s cultural heritage, natural beauty, and unique attractions. The DOT also works to improve infrastructure, facilities, and services that support the tourism industry.

The DOT’s vision is to be the leading catalyst for the sustainable growth, development, and competitiveness of the Philippine tourism industry. This vision recognizes that tourism has enormous potential to drive economic growth in the country while preserving cultural heritage and protecting natural resources.

Sustainable Growth

The DOT believes that sustainable growth is essential for long-term success in tourism. This means creating opportunities for local communities while minimizing negative impacts on natural resources. The DOT encourages responsible travel practices among tourists and promotes sustainable tourism development.

Development

Tourism can drive economic development by creating jobs, generating income, and increasing investment in local communities. The DOT aims to support this growth by developing new tourist destinations, improving infrastructure like airports and roads, and investing in human capital through training programs.

Competitiveness

Tourism is a highly competitive industry globally. To remain competitive on an international stage, it’s important for the Philippines to offer unique experiences that differentiate it from other destinations. The DOT works with local communities to develop authentic cultural experiences that will attract tourists looking for something different.

The DOT’s mission is to champion sustainable tourism development for inclusive growth and the global promotion of the Philippines as a world-class destination. This mission recognizes that tourism can be a powerful force for positive change, providing opportunities for economic development and cultural exchange.

Sustainable Tourism Development

The DOT aims to promote sustainable tourism development, which means balancing economic, social, and environmental concerns. This approach ensures that tourism benefits local communities while minimizing negative impacts on natural resources.

Inclusive Growth

Tourism has the potential to create jobs and generate income in communities across the Philippines. The DOT works to ensure that these benefits are shared equitably by promoting inclusive growth. This means creating opportunities for small businesses, women, and marginalized communities.

Global Promotion

The DOT promotes the Philippines as a world-class destination through advertising campaigns, trade shows, and other promotional activities. By showcasing the country’s unique attractions and cultural heritage, the DOT aims to attract more tourists to the Philippines.

CTD Mission and Vision

Photo of Chinatown in Los Angeles at night

The Los Angeles City Tourism Department advances tourism policies and strategies to increase the competitiveness of Los Angeles as a premier convention and tourist destination. The department oversees two public-private partnerships – the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board (LATCB) and ASM Global – and works to help the City maximize the economic benefits derived from out-of-town visitors whose spending contributes to the growth of the local economy.

The department was created in 2013 as part of the new governance structure when the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) facility shifted from public to private management, which led to the former Los Angeles Convention Center Department becoming the Department of Convention and Tourism Development. The department was then renamed the City Tourism Department (CTD) in 2021 to reflect our new vision - to drive economic development and job creation by enhancing Los Angeles’s prominence as a global tourist and convention destination.

Department of Music’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Strategic Plan 2024-2029

As we prepare for Furman’s third century, faculty, staff, and students took this opportunity to reexamine our vision, mission, and values, and we are excited to share them with you now. These statements and this strategic plan were approved by a unanimous vote of the faculty on April 17, 2024.

Vision, Mission, and Values

A thriving global community enriched by Furman musicians through performance, education, scholarship, and lifelong musical engagement.

Provide an exceptional music education for students through artistically and intellectually diverse musical expression.

  • Excellent undergraduate teaching
  • Preparing students for a career in music
  • Engaging musical performances and scholarship
  • Fostering artistic creativity and curiosity in the Furman community
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility
  • Broad coalition of musical partnerships
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration

We then relied upon these statements to form a strategic plan that will guide us through 2029, identifying the following key priorities:

Priority One: An Impactful and Distinct Student Experience

We will explore and implement student-centric innovations that enhance our pedagogical practice, galvanize learning, and challenge barriers by initiating a curricular review, strengthening our enrollment management strategies, pursuing facility improvements, enhancing our career counseling, and including music technology in our curriculum.

Priority Two: A Thriving Furman Musical Community

We will foster artistic creativity and curiosity in the Furman music community within a framework of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility that allows each person to thrive and flourish by making our facilities more inclusive, examining our curriculum, processes, and programming through an equity lens, working to engage Furman students broadly, providing enhanced mentorship for faculty, and fully engaging our staff.

Priority Three: A Sustainable, Broad, and Visible Program

We will strengthen partnerships beyond Furman to elevate and expand Furman Music’s reputation and identity, while building a sustainable future by developing strategic partnerships with other arts organizations, hosting a wide array of musical events, expanding our ability to tell our story, and enhancing our national profile.

As Furman University launches its new 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, these university efforts coincided with our desire to develop a plan that aligned our priorities within broader university planning. Furman has established three strategic priorities:

Priority One: University of Innovation and Impact

Priority Two: Thriving Community

Priority Three: Sustainable Future

Our departmental priorities have been designed in response to our own vision, mission, and values, but they also amplify, support, and bolster the university’s strategic goals. Over the next five years, our Department of Music must grow and adapt to an ever-changing world while simultaneously preparing for a new generation of students who have endured and overcome unique and historic challenges in their years prior to college. Making these adjustments will be critical to maintaining and enhancing Furman’s position as one of the oldest and most successful liberal arts college music programs.

Everest: Nirmal Purja Posts Video of Cut Ropes, Shares Details

T he last teams on Everest are back down. Among them is Nirmal Purja, who summited both Everest and Lhotse with his small Elite Exped team. He also brought down a video showing cut ropes.

“People call me a liar, but that’s the evidence,” Purja says in the video, which shows ropes of different colors tied together. Text overlaid on the video states that the footage was recorded at 8:40 pm on Monday, just below the Balcony (8,430m). This is about the midway point on a typical summit day on Everest’s South Side, when climbers set off from Camp 4.

Purja’s team was not quite alone on the mountain. Sanu Sherpa was also there. As we reported yesterday, the double 14×8,000’er Sherpa summiter was guiding a private client with 8K Expeditions. Elite Exped’s and his were the last teams on Everest.

Sanu, who also summited Everest on May 11, confirms in the video that there was a new yellow rope the last time he was there. In front of him is a cut yellow rope and a loose blue one.

Purja’s video also records several sherpas, mainly from 8K, who confirmed that a 40-meter-long section of rope was missing between two anchors just below the Balcony. Check it out here:

Easily solved problem

“My team replaced the missing rope, and we continued to the summit,” Nirmal Purja told ExplorersWeb. “Sanu and [his] client also went up but then turned around not far from the South Summit, because his client had some vision problems.”

Ellte Exped has confirmed the team summited Everest on May 28 at 5:45 am and then headed to Lhotse, which they summited at 4:15 pm.

On Sunday, the day before his summit push, as his team moved from Camp 2 to Camp 3, Purja learned about some cut ropes along the normal route. A Peak Promotion team was heading up to retrieve the body of someone who had died years before from the upper sections of the mountain. At some point, the Peak Promotion climbers reported on the radio (audible for all teams) that they could not carry out their mission because of the lack of ropes.

Purja then posted an angry video on social media, claiming the ropes were purposely cut when he was going up with his team. He blamed “ dirty politics ” in the expedition industry and people trying to bring him down, “simply because I have disrupted the industry and been extremely successful,” he said.

Pioneer Adventure, however, stated that their client, Satyadeep Gupta of India, together with two supporting sherpas, summited Everest on Monday, May 27, one day after the rope was supposedly cut. They reported the ropes in place. Purnima Shrestha also summited for the third time this year on Saturday, May 25. No one reported issues with the ropes then, either.

Investigation opened

Local media then accused Purja of damaging Nepal’s image. Nepal’s Department of Tourism opened an investigation against him “for disseminating misinformation with the intention of getting popularity.”

“I welcome the Department of Tourism investigation into the cut ropes and hope they will find out what happened and why,” Purja wrote today with the second video post, showing the cut ropes.

When we asked Pioneer Adventure, they insisted the ropes were in “fine condition.” They said they would make an official statement soon. They have also reported the issue to officials at the Ministry.

ExplorersWeb has asked their client, Satyadeep Gupta, for his perspective.

Why the fuss?

Questions remain in this peculiar story. Was that section of missing rope an unsurpassable obstacle for a strong team such as Elite Exped, which also had only one (unnamed) client and an entire support team?

“No,” Purja said. “A climbing team could have passed that section without ropes if the client is strong and if the guide is capable and experienced.”

Purja noted that something similar happened earlier this season on Annapurna, where there were no ropes above 7,500m. Purja passed that section anyway, while another team retreated.

“Of course, we could have bypassed that section [on Everest],” Purja explained. “I was never worried about it, since we are always prepared with our own guiding ropes. It was the fact that the ropes had been cut that got me upset when I heard it on the radio.

“It’s hard to stay on the top with all these jealous people around me,” he added. “It is not the first time it happens.”

Unanswered questions

So, who (or what) cut the ropes, when, and why? Was it a rock, a climber unable to unclip, or someone purposely? But in that case, what was the motivation?

A final oddity: On that crowded section of the mountain, there are always two ropes: one for those going up and another for those coming down. If the cut rope was the yellow one, where was the other? Was it the blue rope shown in the video? Mingma G told Explorersweb that the blue rope was from last year, but fresh snow should have buried a year-old rope. Yet the blue rope was exposed and looked in good shape.

The mystery remains.
