Top day trips from NYC

Woodstock, NY

1.  Woodstock, NY

Good for hippies at heart 2 hrs, 11mins by car

Though the name conjures a crowd splashed in tie-dye and the faint scent of marijuana, Woodstock isn’t actually where the 1969 festival was held. (That was in Bethel, about two hours away.) Even so, the town is a mix of retired hippies—a street there is named after the late great Band member Levon Helm—artists and city dwellers who feel the need to flee the metropolis on weekends. Woodstock the chance to connect with nature thanks to Overlook Mountain and its various trails as well as a healthy shopping scene with quaint local shops like Candlestock and the Golden Notebook and its weekend flea market, delicious food that can be found at places like Silvia and The Mud Cub and drinks at Station Bar & Curio .

Beacon, NY

2.  Beacon, NY

Good for small town fans 1hr 20mins by Metro-North

This quaint city in Dutchess County boasts an exceptionally good eating, drinking and art scene for its size. Walk five minutes from the train station to Dia:Beacon , a modern art museum housed in a former Nabisco box factory. It houses the Dia Foundation’s permanent collection of works from the ‘60s on, including minimalist sculpture by Anne Truitt and Dan Flavin’s work with fluorescent lights. If you’d rather spend the day sampling some booze,  Dennings Point Distillery on Main Street also offers tours and tastings of their bourbon, whiskey, gin and vodka every Friday and Saturday. Before you board the train back to the city, spend a few quiet minutes watching the sun set over the Hudson at Long Dock Park.

Kingston, NY

3.  Kingston, NY

Good for townies, thrifters and history buffs. 1 hr 50 mins by car

Once a sleepy town, the city of Kingston is experiencing a reawakening with more residents moving in these days. Dating back to the arrival of the Dutch in 1652, Kingston has a rich history as the state's first capital. During the Revolutionary War, it was burned by the British and in the 19th century, it became a transportation hub, situated right on the Hudson. Despite the fire, you can still see the gorgeous First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston, which was organized in 1659, and many 17th century stone buildings, including the Senate House, which was built in the 1670s. The city is divided into different sections: Uptown, which includes the historic Stockade area; midtown, which is bisected by Broadway, the city’s main drag; and Rondout, near the creek and river, to the south, according to the New York Times . A handful of trendy stores and unique hangouts like Rough Draft , a bookstore and taproom, have opened recently as well as a number of restaurants slinging delicious food like Ship to Shore and Lola . The Ulster Performing Arts Center , inside a restored 1926 theater, regularly has events and the city is also home to a number of festivals, including the Kingston Jazz Festival and the Artists Soapbox Derby. The Trolley Museum of New York even offers 1.5-mile ride on weekends and holidays along the Rondout Creek waterfront to Kingston Point Park.

Mohonk Preserve, NY

4.  Mohonk Preserve, NY

Good for hikers and nature enthusiasts 2 hrs by car

Picture this: over 8,000 acres of forests, cliffs, ponds and streams that are ideal for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, trail running, rock climbing and more. Just 90 miles north of New York City, in Ulster County, Mohonk Preserve is truly a nature lover's slice of paradise that, unlike most other hiking grounds, is also home to horseback riding opportunities within designated carriage roads that promise less foot traffic than other destinations. Make sure to start your day early to make a full day of it.

New Paltz, NY

5.  New Paltz, NY

Good for those who want a mix of town and country 3hrs by LIRR or car

Beyond all the worth-the-trip views of riverside bluffs and verdant trees, New Paltz is the most historic on this list, with preserved houses that were around 100 years before we even became the U.S. of A. So, yeah. Pretty old. Learn about the lives of the 17th-century   Huguenot settlers , as performers (dolled up in duds from the period) take you through 30 buildings over 10 acres, including seven historic homes and a reconstructed 1717 church. (Want to retain the back-to-basics spirit as you take in the National Historic Landmark District? Leave the selfie stick at home.)

Phoenicia, NY

6.  Phoenicia, NY

Good for everyone 2 hrs 50mins by car

Tucked into the Catskills, this Ulster County hamlet is a real melting pot, the kind of place where you can expect to see a conservative old-timer and a Brooklyn lumbersexual sipping Buds along the bar in perfect harmony. For every no-nonsense staple ( Phoenicia Diner ), there’s a hipster newbie ( the Graham & Co. ). Try Peekamoose if you want to be trendy—the restaurant is known as the “Gramercy of the Catskills.” If you’re looking to do something unique, float down the creek’s rapids—one of the most popular things to do in Phoenicia—or  hike at  Giant Ledge . The mellow, no-frills, hippie-dippie local culture makes it easy for anyone to relax here.

Cornwall, NY

7.  Cornwall, NY

Good for photo enthusiasts 1hr by car

With its rolling green hills and massive sculpture installations, Storm King Art Center is tailor-made for stunning photographs. Art aficionados and nature lovers alike will enjoy wandering the 500-acre art park featuring works from more than 100 artists including Alexander Calder and Maya Lin. Take the guided tram tour around the park once to get the lay of the land, then set off on foot or rent a bike for a day of exploring and Instagramming. Visitors can even climb inside a select number of the works. The artistic flair extends to the riverfront village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, where you can dine at the eclectic restaurant–art gallery combo Painter’s .

Kerhonkson, NY

8.  Kerhonkson, NY

Good for hikers 2hrs by car

Between its rugged landscape and forested pine-barrens area, upstate has some stellar natural spots, and Minnewaska State Park Preserve is one of the best. The more than 22,000-acre spread has been converted into an egalitarian playground with 50 miles of trails, a new rock-climbing spot at the Dickie Barre cliffs, as well as old carriage roads well suited for mountain biking. Cool off with a swim in Lake Minnewaska or Lake Awosting, nestled between towering white bluffs and known for their translucent aquamarine color. Afterward, head to New Paltz for a break at the Water Street Market , where you can eat, shop, and take in art, outdoor movies on Monday nights (June–Aug) and free music on Tuesdays. Historic Huguenot Street is also worth a gander; the road features seven 300-year-old stone houses from the original settlement and provides a tangible glimpse at the history of the town.

Cold Spring, NY

9.  Cold Spring, NY

Good for outdoorsy folk 70mins by Metro-North

The Hudson Highlands have lush landscapes, peaks and breathtaking hikes for all levels. Little Stony Point Loop offers a relaxed jaunt along a flat peninsula where you can wade into the Hudson River at the beach. Explore old ruins, including a crumbled mansion and defunct dairy farm, on the gradually sloping, partially unpaved Cornish Estate Trail, which starts opposite Little Stony Point Loop, marked by blue blazes. While there’s plenty of shopping and dining to be done in town, the adventurous should tackle the steep climbs and rock scrambles that lead to the summit of Breakneck Ridge for an impressive 360-degree vista of Storm King Mountain, Bannerman Castle and, on clear days, the Catskills. For detailed guidebooks and maps, check out New York–New Jersey Trail Conference , Open Space Institute and Appalachian Mountain Club , and bring water and appropriate footwear, even for the simpler treks.

Sleepy Hollow, NY

10.  Sleepy Hollow, NY

Good for history lovers 30–45mins by Metro-North to Tarrytown

Take a five-minute cab ride from the station to Philipsburg Manor Upper Mills living-history museum —a farm and mill dating back to 1750—to try hands-on activities. Staffers in period costume demonstrate grinding grain in the gristmill, threshing wheat and preparing goods for shipping with traditional instruments. The visit also provides a sobering reminder that slavery was not confined to the South, which guided tours highlight. Explore the dairy, kitchens and bed chambers in the main house, then bask in the rustic scenery from the bridge overlooking the pond. Take the 15-minute walk to the Bridge View Tavern for craft brews, pub grub, and views of the bridge and stretch of the Hudson River known as the Tappan Zee.

Warwick, NY

11.  Warwick, NY

Good for pickers 1 hr 30 mins by car

A day at the orchard sounds nice, right? Warwick’s main attraction is Masker Fruit Farms—a 200-acre orchard open for apple picking seven days a week. Swing by the country store on your way out to pick up apple butter and a jug of cider and do a wine tasting at Demarest Hill Winery before a relaxing jaunt around the historic town.

Ithaca, NY

12.  Ithaca, NY

Good for adventurers 4 hrs, 30 mins by car

Ithaca, on the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, is a college town through and through, but it's also got that rustic, upstate vibe and gorgeous fall foliage you're looking for with quaint Victorian homes to gaze at. It's a great getaway for those who want to go leaf-peeping and pumpkin picking but also want to check out the local town nightlife and its plethora of restaurants. The best part? It's near to some of New York's most incredible gorges and waterfalls. They don't say "Ithaca is gorges" for nothin'!

Fire Island, L.I.

13.  Fire Island, L.I.

Good for sunseekers 1hr 30mins by LIRR and ferry

Once a haven for nude sunbathers, Fire Island’s federally managed beaches have made clothing very much mandatory since 2013. There’s still plenty of fun to be had on the 31-mile barrier island, including lifeguard-supervised, all-ages swimming on Sailors Haven, Watch Hill, Davis Park and Atlantique. Nature lovers might want to walk along the elevated boardwalk at Sunken Forest Preserve , a rare maritime ecosystem growing in the low spot between two sand dunes. Holly trees, sassafras, black cherry and prickly cat-briar all grow together in a tangle of vegetation. Staying through the evening? The bar scenes in Ocean Beach and Kismet draw crowds of attractive young professionals, while Cherry Grove and the Pines thrive with vibrant LGBTQ communities.

Greenport, L.I.

14.  Greenport, L.I.

Good for the townies at heart 3hrs by LIRR or car

This quaint fishing village on the North Fork of Long Island is a gorgeous little getaway not far from the city. Once you've passed the dozens of vineyards, you'll happen upon small storefronts and diners, ice cream shops, beautiful churches, and finally, a gorgeous merry-go-round right on the water. While you're there, you'll want to stop at Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market  for some beer and oysters, peruse vintage finds at The Times Vintage , and stop for ice cream at Sandpiper Coffee and Ice Cream Shop . While you're out that way, be sure to stop at Lavender by the Bay in East Marion to frolic among the purple blooms.

Montauk, L.I.

15.  Montauk, L.I.

Good for adventurers and sunseekers 2hrs 30mins by car, 3hrs 15mins by LIRR, 3hrs 30mins by Hampton Jitney

Known to tourists as “the End,” the chilled-out Hamptons village at the easternmost reach of the South Fork offers some of the best surfing in the region. Rent a board—fiberglass, foam or epoxy—and a wet suit from the family-owned Air and Speed Surf Shop . Drive your gear to Ditch Plains Beach for a lesson with local fixture and professional instructor Corey Senese . Towel off and refuel at Ditch Witch, a beloved food truck slinging breakfast burritos, addictive Asian sesame noodles and Zen Blend iced green tea. Before you head home, join everyone else in town at the Montauket, a neighborhood joint where you can sip a pint of Blue Point toasted lager while watching the sun melt into the rippling horizon of Fort Pond Bay.

Bethlehem, PA

16.  Bethlehem, PA

Good for gamblers 1 hr 44mins by car Take a walk on the wild side when you visit Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s prime casino and resort: Wind Creek . Rattle the dice, try your luck on the slots, play table games or simply go for the cocktails. While there are ten fine dining options (including three Emeril’s eateries—bam!), we recommend hitting Main Street in historic Bethlehem for a bite. Enjoy a flight of sangria and eat small plates such as bacon-wrapped dates and, hummus ad burrata at Tapas On Main. Afterward, oblige your sweet tooth across the street at Penn State’s Creamy Ice Cream shop inside Hotel Bethlehem.

Philadelphia, PA

17.  Philadelphia, PA

Good for culture hounds 1hr 30mins by Amtrak, 2hrs by bus

Skip southward to shop Philly’s flourishing secondhand scene of vintage clothing shops and thrifty treasure spots. A few steps off South Street (but still not far from a cheesesteak) is Heres2CoolStuff , acclaimed for its colorful and inexpensive collection of men's and women’s apparel. For dapper gentlemen, Briar boasts a meticulously edited collection of classic Americana style, including tailored sport coats, varsity jackets and military boots alongside sartorial accessories (bowties, cufflinks, hats) and oddities for the curious collector. Don’t leave without hitting up what just might be every Macklemore fan’s fantasy come true: Bulk Vintage , a warehouse for hunters who don’t mind digging—literally—for retro duds sold at wholesale prices that rival any thrift shop north of Jersey. If you can’t make the public opening hours, make an appointment to rummage.

Short Hills, NJ

18.  Short Hills, NJ

Good for escape artists 45mins by car

Nudged up against the South Mountain Reservation, Greenwood Gardens  (which opens May 1, 2021) presents a tranquil, isolated escape. The grounds have been around since the early 1900s, but not until April 2013, following several years of renovation, did they open to the public. Begin at the orientation center, a redbrick revival Georgian manor, and proceed to a formal Italianate garden marked by stone terraces and wooden pergolas. Follow stone paths to the rustic Arts and Crafts–style cottages, then wind your way to the three-foot-tall limestone chess pieces lining the steps to the teahouse. Seek out the summerhouse on your own and admire the resident swans, chickens and goats, or join a guide on a 45-minute walking tour.

Hamilton, NJ

19.  Hamilton, NJ

Good for art aficianados 1hr 20mins by NJ Transit

Wandering amid the 270 pieces of contemporary art at Grounds for Sculpture , five minutes by cab from the Hamilton station, makes for a serene escape, with playful surprises around every corner. Visitors are encouraged to snoop for secret spots among the 42 picturesque acres, such as the hidden hammock room near the Nine Muses sculpture (take a snooze without fear—the door locks from the inside), and keep an eye out for the many peacocks. The park’s indoor gallery at Seward Johnson has four exhibits, including two site-specific glass installations by sculptor Daniel Clayman. End your day with upscale local cuisine at on-site restaurant Rat’s . Nibble on the mussels mouclade and the charcuterie platter, or sip a cocktail during happy hour. Imbibe on the patio overlooking a re-creation of Monet’s iconically depicted bridge in Giverny, or even bring your drink out into the park.

Washington, D.C.

20.  Washington, D.C.

Good for history buffs 3 hrs by Amtrak

Washington, D.C. really isn't as far away as you might think and it's chock-full of fun things to do, from touristy visits of historical monuments to hikes in the great outdoors and more. Don't miss the National Gallery of Art or Meridian Hill Park for some incredible art and sculptures, respectively, and head to the lush Rock Creek Park around your scheduled visits to see the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. When thirsty, stop by Archipelago for some tiki drinks and feast at Union Market or Rose's Luxury . Check out our guide to all things D.C. here .

New Canaan, CT

21.  New Canaan, CT

Good for architecture fans 1hr 15mins by Metro-North

Architect Philip Johnson built a completely transparent modern home on his 47-acre estate in Connecticut in 1949, a feat that quickly brought him worldwide notoriety. You might also recognize his work from the sculpture garden at MoMA. After his death, the Glass House was opened to the public in 2007. Curious visitors can explore the property by buying a timed ticket to for the one-hour, two-hour or three-hour tour. Take in the sleek, spartan design, then head into town to spy some examples of classic New England architecture. There’s the one-room Little Red Schoolhouse, the Greek Revival Hanford-Silliman House and a replica of the original Cody Drug Store from 1918. Stop for a freshly made dulce de leche gelato at Gelatissimo before leaving town.

Silvermine, CT

22.  Silvermine, CT

Good for wanderers 2 hrs by car

Located in southwest Connecticut, Silvermine isn’t a far trek from NYC, but it offers enough of an escape to be a perfect getaway. The historic town, dating back to the late 1600s, has largely centered around Silvermine Tavern , a historic mill that still hosts jazz weekends and wine dinners. The Silvermine River runs through the heart of the village. Stop at  The Silvermine Arts Center and wander Grace Farms, an 80-acre public nature preserve with a giant, prize-winning, river-inspired building designed by a Japanese firm. If you want more architecture, visit the modern and aptly named Philip Johnson Glass House.

The Palisades, NJ

23.  The Palisades, NJ

Good for bicyclists 30min by bike

Throw on your best Lululemon gear and head to the next state over for a cycling jaunt. If you don’t have your own set of wheels, stop by Tread Bike Shop ; rentals include helmets, and the friendly staff supplies sage advice for newbies. Set off and make your way through the hilly, neighborhood streets of Inwood and follow signs for the George Washington Bridge. Take in panoramic views of Manhattan while gliding over the Hudson via the bridge’s cyclist-and-pedestrian-only path. Veer left to stay on Henry Hudson Drive, the Palisades’ main bike path, which will take you along mountain roads past rustling trees and views of the water. At the bottom of the trail, riders will find grassy picnic areas on the river. The return ride back to the city is, mercifully, a simpler, mostly downhill ride.

Cape May, NJ

24.  Cape May, NJ

Good for nature lovers and village people 2hrs 30mins by NJ Transit bus

Aboard the Cape May Whale Watcher , you’ll skip into the Delaware Bay on a quest for dolphins, humpbacks and finbacks. The knowledgeable captain explains cetacean behaviors, such as spy hopping (popping the head up and holding the position to have a look around) and breaching (the classic Shamu jump-splash routine), and the company promises a free future trip if you don’t spot any marine mammals between spring and fall. Once you get your back on dry land, feast on seafood at Lucky Bones Backwater Grille , a local restaurant named for the hooklike claw found on male horseshoe crabs that superstitious sailors used to wear for a safe return. Continue your day with a friendly game of putt-putt at Cape May Miniature Golf . If you want to up the stakes, bet on who can get the lowest score; winner buys a round of Italian ices or sundaes from the ground’s old-school ice cream parlor, Cocomoe’s.

Atlantic City, NJ

25.  Atlantic City, NJ

Good for sunseekers and history buffs 2hrs by car or 2hrs 30mins by bus The casino town remains lively as ever since Hurricane Sandy, and several new events and recent additions to the boardwalk prove it’s possible to spend a pleasant day here without ending up at the blackjack table. The annual Atlantic City Airshow provides an opportunity to sprawl on the beach while watching vintage planes take stomach-dropping nosedives over the ocean. After an afternoon of sunning yourself on the sand, sample the old-fashioned saltwater taffy at Fralinger’s on the boardwalk. The historic family-run business has been making the candy since 1884. Atlantic City is also home to Absecon Lighthouse , the tallest in New Jersey. For a nominal fee, you can climb the 228-step spiral staircase to the top of the tower and take in the sweeping views of the waves.

The 5 best day trips from Santa Fe, New Mexico

Ungelbah Davila

Aug 12, 2021 • 9 min read

The historic Santa Fe Railway depot in New Mexico was built in 1909

The historic Santa Fe Railway depot in New Mexico was built in 1909

There are many reasons to travel to Santa Fe – or as locals like to call it, "the City Different" – but one of the best reasons is the city's proximity to some of the most historic and culturally vibrant places in the United States. This is where the fantasies and realities of the Wild West were honed, where pre-colonial civilizations created some of their most enduring monuments, and where Spanish, Mexican and American influences fuse on every dinner plate .

Then there's the terrain. Northern New Mexico ’s high desert is some of the most biodiverse land in the country, and aeons of erosion by wind and water have carved out landscapes that are well worth hopping into the car to explore. Traveling here is a window onto a different New Mexico – following winding roads across the Sangre de Cristo mountains, you’ll discover hidden villages with unique stories to tell.

A day trip from Santa Fe is a safari into the untarnished history and culture of the Southwest . Here is our pick of the best days out from New Mexico's vibrant capital.

El Santuario de Chimayo

Located just off the famous "High Road to Taos," with one foot in Santa Fe County and one foot in Rio Arriba, Chimayo also straddles the intersections of time. This historic pueblo (village) harks back to Spanish times, and its 19th-century church is one of the country's most important Catholic shrines.

If you happen to visit during Holy Week, you'll find yourself sharing the 29 picturesque miles of road from Santa Fe with hundreds of pilgrims and penitentes (practitioners of ritual penance), engaged in the centuries-old practice of walking, crawling, and hauling crosses on their backs to this sacred site. The focal point of devotions is the Santuario de Chimayo , a Spanish colonial-style Catholic church built from adobe in 1813.

The construction of this historic church was petitioned by Don Bernardo Abeya, a member of Los Hermanos Penitentes – a secret society of Catholic penitents that is still in existence today – but the church itself is no secret. It attracts some 300,000 visitors a year as one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States.

In fact, Chimayo's sacred status precedes the arrival of the Spanish. The location was a holy site for the Tewa, and Spanish settlers witnessed healing miracles occur when small amounts of soil from the site was ingested. The church houses a specific room where the floor is open to the earth so visitors can take home the holy dirt or consume it on site.

Chimayo and the Santuario are located on the ancestral homeland of the Tewa, a Pueblo people who inhabited this part of New Mexico for thousands of years before the area was occupied by the Spanish in the 1600s. The Tewa were the first to acknowledge a spiritual connection with the land where the church now sits, and people from the community still refer to this area as "Tsi-Mayo," the Tewa name for the four sacred hills located behind the church.

Chile ristras

In addition to sacred soil, the earth that runs through the upper Rio Grande Valley produces some of the most excellent red chilies in the state. The longer the chile stays on the plant, the riper and redder it becomes and the more intense its flavor. Visitors will spot dried red peppers in the chile ristras (chile garlands) embellishing doorways and portals throughout Santa Fe County.

Once harvested and dried, pods are soaked and blended into red chile sauce or ground into a powdery spice that local vendors, whose family roots go as deep into the soil of Chimayo as the local cottonwood trees, sell along Chimayo’s main street in stuffed zip-lock bags. The area is also famous for the textiles produced by the Ortega and Trujillo families, whose weaving traditions can be traced to the five thousand churro sheep that arrived with Francisco Vázquez de Coronado and his Conquistadors in 1540.

How to get to Chimayo: It's an easy 29-mile drive from Santa Fe to Chimayo along Route 84/Route 285, turning east onto State Road 76 at Española. Alternatively, you can take the scenic route, branching off Route 84/Route 285 at Pojoaque and picking up State Road 503 – the High Road to Taos Scenic Byway. Allow about 45 minutes for the drive.

Mineral baths at the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa

Ojo Caliente

The upper Rio Grande is dotted with hot springs, most famously those at the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa . New Mexico's indigenous inhabitants had long recognized the healing properties of the hot, mineral-infused waters, and when the Spanish arrived they quickly developed an appreciation for bathing in the mineral springs, a habit that continued under both Mexican and American rule.

The first proper bathhouse at Ojo Caliente was built in 1868, and a stucco hotel was added in 1916. Today, this historic hub has been expanded into a top-of-the-line spa and resort, though some of the original architecture still stands. The enclosed bathhouse, with its wonderful pebbly floor and rock walls, is the same now as it was when frontiersmen rode the trails.

Folks who balk at the idea of eating the earth at Chimayo can find a less challenging introduction to the healing traditions of New Mexico in the form of an Ojo mud bath, where visitors literally coat their bodies in smooth, chocolatey mud and then lay out in the New Mexico sunshine to bake, a process that is believed to extract toxins from the skin. Afterwards, you can wash off with warm spring water.

How to get to Ojo Caliente: To reach the springs, follow Route 84/Route 285 as far as Española, then stick to Route 285 as it veers northeast (Route 84 heads off to the northwest towards Chama). Allow about an hour and a quarter for the drive.

Poeh Cultural Center

While the 19 recognized pueblos (traditional indigenous villages) of New Mexico were closed to outsiders in response to the COVID-19 virus, it is still possible to learn more about Tewa life at the Poeh Cultural Center in Pojoaque , a modernised pueblo that bounced back from a smallpox outbreak in the 19th century. A 20-minute drive north of Santa Fe, the Poeh Center is located to the east of the highway, easily identifiable by its iconic adobe architecture. It's striking Tower Gallery sits on the horizon like an ethereal desert sandcastle.

Inside the tower is an art gallery where the work of Tewa artist Roxanne Swentzell and other Native American artists can be viewed and purchased, while other buildings are given over to a museum that serves as a unique hub for Pueblo culture. As well as displays on Pueblo life, the museum plays an active role in the community, promoting cultural preservation through markets, special events and exhibitions involving local Pueblo families.

If you can't get to the 1000-year-old adobe settlements at Taos or Acoma , a visit to the Poeh Cultural Center is a great way for anyone visiting the ancestral Tewa homelands of Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico to gain a deeper respect and understanding for the area and its original inhabitants.

How to get to Pojoaque: The town of Pojoaque is a 20-minute drive north from Santa Fe along Route 84/Route 285. The Poeh Cultural Center is impossible to miss beside the road as you come into town. Heading onward from Pojoaque, you can follow State Road 503–the High Road to Taos Scenic Byway – to reach Taos in about two hours, passing through stunning Sangre de Cristo Mountain landscapes .

Maze at Ghost Ranch

Santa Feans often wonder why anyone would go to Europe to see art when some of the planet's most remarkable creativity can be found right here in New Mexico. From a robust Native American art community to modern legends like Georgia O’Keefe, Judy Chicago, Bruce Nauman and actor-artist Dennis Hopper, New Mexico has spawned or provided a home for more notable artists than we could ever list here.

Take a drive to Abiquiu and you'll soon grasp what draws artists to these elemental landscapes. Photos can never fully capture the drama of the red, white and black rock formations, and the way the light sculpts them into almost supernatural forms along the horizon at different times of day. It's easy to understand why Georgia O’Keefe chose to make her home at Ghost Ranch , a 20,000-acre property now operated by the Presbyterian Church as an educational and spiritual retreat offering classes, horseback riding and tours.

Just north of Abiquiu is a particularly unusual landscape known as the Plaza Blanca. This otherworldly white limestone rock formation consists of towering white hoodoos (wind eroded pillars) that have led many to credit the area with spiritual properties. The site sits on the grounds of the adobe Dar Al Islam mosque , which welcomes visitors of all faiths without any prior arrangements.

How to get to Abiquiu: Follow Route 84/Route 285 north from Santa Fe to Española, then bear northwest along Route 84 when the two routes split. It's about an hour to the village of Abiquiu; the Dar Al Islam mosque is just north of the main road signposted on a track leading up into the dry hills from the bottom of the valley. Ghost Ranch is a few miles northeast of Abiquiu, signposted off Route 84, beyond the reservoir.

Pueblo Indian cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier National Monument

Head an hour west of Santa Fe and you’ll find yourself on a time-travel journey through human history, going back at least 11,000 years. The Bandelier National Monument site is home to incredible cliff dwellings carved from volcanic tuff, which were hollowed out by the ancient ancestors of the Keres and Tewa communities that still inhabit pueblos to the north and south of the cliff dwellings. The largest village in Bandelier’s main canyon retains its Keres name of Tyuonyi, while the main ancestral Tewa village is called Tsankawi Owinge.

This national park also has more recent historical ties. During the New Deal of the 1930s, the federal government created the Civilian Conservation Corps, rescuing many young men from unemployment by putting them to work renovating the site. Several pieces of southwestern art deco architecture are still visible, along with priceless murals created by artist Pablita Velarde from the  Santa Clara Pueblo as part of the Public Works of Art Project, which employed many New Mexico artists during the Great Depression.

How to get to Bandelier National Monument: The national monument covers 33,000 acres, so there's a fair bit of ground to cover. Self-guided hiking trails criss-cross the site, and ranger led-walks run from the Frijoles Canyon visitor center. You can drive right up to Frijoles Canyon in winter, but from mid-May to mid-October, you'll need to take a mandatory shuttle bus from the visitor center at nearby White Rock. Driving from Santa Fe, go north on Route 84/Route 285 to Pojoaque, then bear west along State Road 502 and State Road 4 to reach White Rock, then Bandelier.

Day Trips Less Than 1 Hour From Dallas

Fort worth, tx.

Fort Worth often gets lumped in with Dallas as one big Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

But you’d be mistaken if you thought the two cities were twin-like in activities and attitude.

Like its nickname implies, Cowtown is Dallas’ country cousin, where you’re likely to see more cowboy hats than business casual attire.

Drive 40 minutes west of Dallas and spend the day watching one of the two daily cattle drives (11:30 am and 4:00 pm) in the Fort Worth Stockyards , stroll through the Fort Worth Water Gardens, and grab a bite to eat at one of 30+ restaurants in Sundance Square.

After a day spent exploring, two-step the night away at Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s biggest Honky Tonk!

It’s true what they say… everything’s bigger in Texas!

Visiting on a Friday or Saturday? The Fort Worth Stockyards hosts the world’s only year-round rodeo!

If you’ve reached your cowboy quota for the day, enjoy a smoother side of the city with a cocktail and some music as you pay homage to the city’s deep-running jazz roots at the Scat Jazz Lounge.

Denton is the “lil d” to the “Big D” of Dallas.

It’s an artsy college community with all the charm of small-town Texas just 45 minutes away and is one of the easiest day trips from Dallas.

At the heart of the quaint city square sits the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, a free museum focusing on the town’s culture and history.

Built in 1896, the courthouse was restored in 2004 according to the original blueprints and is an iconic symbol of the city.

While you’re here, enjoy the live music scene, bolstered by talent from the local college, or support the burgeoning craft beer scene by visiting a local brewery!

Another great idea is to watch a play at the iconic Campus Theatre, which opened in 1949 as a movie theater and was later reimagined as a performing arts facility.

Developed as a railroad town in 1873, historic roots run deep.

Visit the charming Historic Downtown District and admire the classic storefronts and hand-painted murals.

Terrell is far from the Gulf, but scuba-certified visitors can take a dive at Scuba Ranch, where you just might meet Sisco the Shark, the largest freshwater shark in the US. (Don’t worry… he can’t bite!)

From the depths of the lake, head to a high-flying adventure.

Celebrate the bond between Great Britain and the US with a visit to the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum.

During WWII, British cadets were sent to flight training schools across the US, and Terrell’s school was the first and largest, graduating over 2,200 Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Corps cadets between 1941 and 1945.

Caddo Lake State Park, TX

Caddo Lake State Park is 2 hours and 40 minutes east of Dallas, but you’ll feel like you’ve entered an entirely different world.

Explore the bayous, dotted with bald cypress trees draped with Spanish moss, and experience the pure serenity of nature.

Hike the trails or paddle the waters in a canoe or kayak, but I don’t recommend swimming, since alligators have made their home in this lake!

But, who can blame them?

With over 70 species of fish in the lake, fishermen aren’t the only ones excited to make a catch!

2 hours, 40 minutes.

Broken Bow, OK

At nearly three hours northeast of the Big D, Broken Bow is the furthest destination on this list of day trips from Dallas.

Forget all of your big city anxieties, and let the serenity of Broken Bow’s untouched beauty envelop you.

Aquatic adventures abound as you canoe, kayak, or tube down Mountain Fork River or rent a SUP board on Broken Bow Lake.

If you have a fishing license, you’ll enjoy casting a line in one of the stocked trout streams or catch-and-release trophy areas.

If you prefer land-based escapades, take a hike through Beavers Bend State Park, trot through the Ouachita Mountains on horseback, or ride around on an ATV through Broken Bow’s best trails.

No matter the mode of transport, the views are guaranteed to be stunning!

Jefferson, TX

Visit the 19th-century town of Jefferson where you’ll experience the beauty of historic homes, charming hotels, and over 100 historical landmarks as you make your way through town.

Prefer something spooky over sentimentality?

Jefferson is regarded as the most haunted small Texas town, and you can take a ghost tour to learn about its history, legends, and maybe even meet the long-departed residents.

If you travel to Terrell, Tx between apx. May 15-August 15th……be sure to stop at Ham’s Orchard just outside of Terrell. The homemade soft served peach and strawberry ice cream is worth the trip there. They sell lots more than ice cream. Look for their website online. There is also a Buc-ee’s nearby.

Peach ice cream AND a nearby Buc-ee’s?! I’m sold!!

10 Best Day Trips in Italy

By Kris Fordham

From Rome: Castelli Romani

Just twelve miles southeast of Rome , the verdant and tranquil Castelli Romani (Roman Castles) region is the perfect refuge from the crowded streets of the Eternal City. Besides castles , you’ll find volcanic lakes and historic villages concentrated around Lake Albano and the Castelli Romani Regional Park. Pay a visit to the picturesque village of Castel Gandolfo, where you can tour the Pope’s summer residence and enjoy dramatic views over Lake Albano. Make sure to stop for lunch in Frascati, a town loved by Romans for its terrific food scene and delicious white wine of the same name.

How to get there: You can drive to any of the Castelli Romani towns in around 30 minutes, but a train from Roma Termini is just as fast and saves you from the stress of having to drive in Rome . Trains to Castel Gandolfo and Frascati leave Roma Termini every hour, and cost $2.40 (€2.10) each way.

From Florence: Chianti

Though you’ll never run out of things to do in Florence , leave room in your itinerary for a quick wine-country getaway. Go truffle hunting and tasting at Ruffino’s sprawling Poggio Casciano estate, visit the Antinori winery and sip Chianti Classico at its source, and stop into one of the area's picturesque towns (we like Strada, Greve, and Panzano) for the kind of hearty, homemade country cuisine you won’t find in Florence.

How to get there: Unfortunately, public transportation won’t get you to most of Chianti’s cantine , so driving is your only option. From Florence, cruise south on the SS22 for 30 minutes until you reach the heart of the Chianti wine region.

From Venice: The Dolomites

Turin doesn't have the only Italian mountains worth climbing: just north of Venice , you’ll find the spectacular, UNESCO-listed Dolomite mountain range . You can access the mountains via the 86-mile Great Dolomites Road, one of the world’s most breathtaking alpine drives. Stop at Falzarego Pass for a ride on the Lagazuoi Cable Car (it takes you to the top of Mount Lagazuoi, where you can enjoy the best views over the Dolomites’ craggy, sawtooth peaks) or a quick ski, if the weather allows.

How to get there: From Venice, drive north for two hours to Cortina d’Ampezzo, the start of the Great Dolomites Road. From here, it’s another 30-minute drive up to Falzarego Pass. If it’s your first time driving in Italy, it’s best to book a day trip from Venice with a reputable tour company, as the roads are narrow and winding (and the scenery dangerously distracting). Viator offers well-curated day trips from Venice to the Dolomites all year round, starting at $150.

From Milan: Lake Iseo

Lake Como might be more famous, but Lake Iseo ’s low-key vibe and laid-back charm makes it the ideal one-day getaway from buzzy Milan . Iseo, Lombardy’s fourth-largest lake, has the fairytale views and pastel-colored villages of Como, without the thick summer crowds and inflated prices. Plus, there’s wine! The neighboring Franciacorta region is home to the best sparkling wine in Italy (sorry, Prosecco). Enjoy it paired with fresh-grilled lake trout at La Foresta on Mount Isola—a mountain island that soars dramatically from the lake’s center.

How to get there: It’s convenient to get to Lake Iseo from Milan by car or train. If you’re driving, simply head east on the A4 towards Bergamo, exiting at the Sarnico junction to reach the lake’s western shore (the drive takes about an hour and a half). Otherwise, hop on a train from Milano Centrale to Brescia, switching there for trains to Iseo or Sulzano (the whole trip also takes an hour and a half and costs $10.50, or €9.20, each way).

From Naples: Caserta

Though the Amalfi Coast is the most obvious day trip from Naples, you’ll likely want to spend more than just a day there ( road trip , anyone?). Caserta, on the other hand, is a relatively under-the-radar destination you can get to in 40 minutes and enjoy thoroughly in a single day. Its main attraction is the UNESCO–listed Reggia di Caserta, a spectacular, 18th-century royal palace dubbed the Italian Versailles (it’s technically even larger than Versailles, with a whopping 1,200 rooms). Spend the morning gawking at its spectacular frescoes, the afternoon roaming its lush, 300-acre gardens, and then grab a pizza at Masanielli for dinner before heading back to Naples.

How to get there: A train ride from Napoli Centrale will get you to Caserta in just 40 minutes ($4.45, or €3.90, one way). From Caserta station, it’s a five-minute walk to the palace.

From Turin: Alba

You’ll probably never want to leave the “Paris of Italy” once you get there, but trust us: You’ll want to go to Alba. Nestled in the heart of the Langhe wine region, Alba is known for its Barolo and Barbaresco wines, its chocolate (it’s the birthplace of Ferrero Rocher and Nutella ) and above all, its white truffles. Alba’s annual white truffle festival attracts chefs and gourmands from around the globe every fall, but you can enjoy Alba’s famous white truffles all year round. Go to any trattoria (it’s impossible not to eat well in this little gastronomic wonderland) and ask for tajarin , a pasta dish consisting of Piedmontese tagliolini dressed in butter and cheese and topped with shaved white truffles.

How to get there: It takes just an hour to drive from Turin to Alba via the A6 towards Savona. Alternatively, you can take the train from Torino Lingotto station directly to Alba in the same length of time ($6.50, or €5.75, one way).

From Verona: Lake Garda

Thanks to its diverse and dramatic landscape, Italy’s largest lake makes for a great day trip, no matter what you’re into. At the mountainous, windswept northern end, nature-lovers can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, windsurfing and paragliding, while its southern end—peppered with pretty lakefront promenades and majestic palazzi—is ideal for more cultural and leisurely pursuits. Sirmione, in particular, is worth a visit for its relaxing thermal baths and beautiful 13th-century castle. Juliet would approve.

How to get there: Driving is quick and easy: just head east on the A4 from Verona for 45 minutes and then exit at Sirmione or Peschiera. Alternatively, you can catch a bus from Verona to Sirmione or Peschiera ( Line 26 ) or Garda ( Lines 163 and 162 ). Each ride takes about an hour and costs €3.50 ($4) one way.

From Bologna: The Adriatic Coast

Though it’s hard to drag yourself from the food mecca that is Bologna, you’ll find buzzy, sun-kissed beaches—and the freshest fritto misto —a little over an hour’s drive away. The Adriatic Coast might not be as scenic or dramatic as the Mediterranean, but its wide, sandy beaches and lively seaside towns (frequented largely by locals, not tourists) are still worth exploring for the day. Cattolica and neighboring Gabbice Mare are particularly lovely with their sprawling golden beaches, great food, and multitudes of theater, concerts, and other events in the summer.

How to get there: Drive west on the A14 towards the coast and exit at Cattolica. Alternatively, hop on a train from Bologna Centrale to Cattolica Giovanni-Gabbice station (the trip takes an hour and costs $12.85, or €11.30, one way).

From Palermo: Zingaro Nature Reserve

Sure, Palermo’s beaches are nice, but some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy—if not the entire world—are within easy day-tripping distance. The Zingaro Nature Reserve, on the Gulf of Castellammare, is home to a collection of stunning, white-sand beaches framed by steep cliffs. Though each of its beaches and secret coves are stunning, we like Cala Tonnarella for its seclusion and calm, Bermuda-blue waters.

How to get there: From Palermo, drive west on the E90 and take the exit for Castellammare-Del Golfo. Make sure to park at the north entrance of the reserve for easiest access to Cala Tonnarella (it’s an easy 10-15 minutes walk from there).

From Genoa: Camogli

Camogli isn’t exactly a secret anymore , but it’s still a must if you happen to be staying in the Ligurian capital . Unlike the narrow, tourist-congested streets of Portofino, this sleepy, colorful port town is home to quiet, open piazzas, and plenty of nature paths that lead to spectacular coastal views. We suggest strolling the main promenade and hiking up to San Rocco church in the morning, then taking the ferry over to the 1,500-year-old San Fruttuoso village in the afternoon. Stop in for some spaghetti alle vongole (with clams) at Da Paolo before heading back to Genoa.

How to get there: Though Camogli is only a half-hour drive from Genoa on the A12, the train to Camogli gets you there just as fast from Genova Brignole station and costs only $6.80 (€6) for a return trip.

Whether you're jumping over state lines or sticking closer to home, these Southern day trips are bound to add a touch of adventure to any humdrum Saturday.

Alabama: The National Memorial for Peace and Justice

Take a day drive down to Montgomery, Alabama's capital city enriched with Southern history, where you'll find groundbreaking new site, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and its accompanying Legacy Museum that both serve to educate, remember, and inspire those who walk the grounds. (When first opened, the national memorial attracted 100,000 visitors in its first 10 weeks, if that says how amazing it is.) Back downtown, you can see the bus stop where Rosa Parks waited for a ride that sparked the Civil Rights Movement, as well as the church Martin Luther King Jr. pastored. museumandmemorial.eji.org

Arkansas: Hot Springs National Park

This super unique national park deserves a spot on the bucket list, not only for the hot spring waters known to have medicinal properties ( according to old Native American legend ), but also for the pretty hiking trails and views that can be found on the neighboring Ouachita Mountain range. In downtown Hot Springs—the aptly named Arkansas town—you'll find quaint, historically-preserved blocks lined with boutiques, eateries, and bathhouses to fill the rest of your time. Have a soak and consider yourself cleansed and ready for the ride home. nps.gov/hosp

Florida: Everglades National Park

Located in South Florida, this national park consists of over 1.5 million acres of wetland just waiting to be explored. Take a short walk on the Anhinga Trail to spot cool wildlife like turtles, herons, and alligators; climb up Shark Valley's 65-foot observation tower for a perfect viewpoint of the famous Everglades ; or paddle amongst the mangroves on Nine-Mile Pond. You might even come across one of Florida's beloved manatees. Many Southerners forget about this national park, but it's actually the largest subtropical wilderness in the country. So basically everywhere you turn, there is something really unique to discover. nps.gov/ever

Georgia: Atlanta Botanical Garden

Peruse the most beautifully kept grounds in all the state of Georgia at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Located near Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta, this 30-acre destination is not only home to impressively groomed formal, rose, and Japanese gardens, but also the Kendeda Canopy Walk, which is a 600-foot-long skywalk that allows visitors to tour one of the city's last remaining urban forests from around 40 feet in the air through the treetops of the Storza Woods. Hint: It's even more stunning when draped in thousands of twinkling lights during Christmastime. atlantabg.org

Kentucky: Buffalo Trace Distillery

This landmark Kentucky distillery has been around since its founding in 1792, which means it's got some serious bourbon history under its belt. So if you've ever wondered about the tradition and hype behind Kentucky bourbon, this is the place to visit. When able, register for one of the intimate complimentary tours—from their signature tour to bourbon fanatic-focused bourbon barrel tour—meant to show off the impressive Buffalo Trace grounds and teach visitors about how real Kentucky bourbon is made. No matter where you're coming from, you're bound to see some rolling hills and horse farms along the ride. buffalotracedistillery.com

Louisiana: Steel Magnolia House

This iconic home featured in everyone's favorite movie about strong Southern women, Steel Magnolias , isn't just sitting idle and forgotten. It's now been converted to a charming bed and breakfast still reminiscent of the 80s dramedy. Inside, there are six suites named after the characters from the film, like the Shelby Room, which is outfitted in Shelby's (Julia Roberts) "signature" pink complete with a private bath featuring the same tub from one of the opening scenes. Visitors can also count on plenty of antiques and Steel Magnolias memorabilia—from costume sketches to behind-the-scenes photos—to make the trip to Natchitoches extra special. (Make sure to get a famous meat pie before you leave town.) steelmagnoliahouse.net

Maryland: The United States Naval Academy

Making your way to the breezy coastal town of Annapolis, Maryland, is a fun day trip in its own right. You can meander along centuries-old cobblestone roads, visit historic sites drenched in American history, and grab yourself a crab cake while you're at it. But hands down, the most stunning spot to hit when you're this far up the Eastern seaboard? The Naval Academy. The campus itself is so steeped in history that it's a bonafide National Historic Landmark in its own right. You're able to access the grounds to join a guided tour—or explore on your own—all the larger-than-life classical buildings that await around every corner, like Bancroft Hall (the largest dormitory in the world; and the prettiest, in our opinion) and the Naval Academy Chapel (which is still home to the crypt of the long-lost John Paul Jones). usna.edu

Mississippi: Elvis Presley Birthplace

Part of the Mississippi Blues Trail—which already solves all of your road trip planning—this historic museum site is located in Tupelo, Mississippi, birthplace of the king of rock 'n' roll himself. The pitstop includes the shotgun home where Elvis Presley was born in 1935, a museum, a chapel, the church he and his parents worshipped in when he was young, and bronze statues on the grounds that have a likeness to Elvis when he was both a child and at the height of his fame. Even if you're not a huge fan, it's surreal to see a slice of the humble history behind one of the music industry's biggest stars. elvispresleybirthplace.com

North Carolina: Biltmore Estate

This day trip attraction is too big to overlook, which is exactly why it tops North Carolina's list. Originally a mansion belonging to the Vanderbilt family, the Asheville estate was built at the height of the Gilded Age in the 1800s and is now a living museum, inn, winery, and tour destination. (The 8,000-acre backyard is quite the day tour for those driving through town.) Visitors don't need to be staying at The Inn on Biltmore Estate to take in all the beauty and fun things it has to offer. Plus, plenty of hiking trails in the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and cute spots to shop and eat back in downtown Asheville make any quick trip well worth it. biltmore.com

South Carolina: Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade

If you've never been to the birthplace of the Shag, now's the time to get yourself educated—and learn how to do the dance to real beach music. This classic Southern beach town is home to a 1.2-mile-long boardwalk full of ocean views, beach shops, good eats, and more. Once everything is back in the normal swing of things, head to The Bowery, a Myrtle Beach icon since its opening in 1944, for great live music. Nearby, Huntington Beach State Park makes a natural beach detour to round out the day. Grab a shell or two to take home as a souvenir. myrtlebeachdowntown.com

Tennessee: Gatlinburg SkyLift Park

The South's first four-season scenic skylift, this Gatlinburg attraction is only one of the reasons that folks are flocking to the classic mountain town in the Smokies. Visitors can be taken from the heart of town 500 feet up to the top of Crockett Mountain, where the new SkyDeck waits with the best views of the Smoky Mountain vistas, as well as the iconic SkyBridge that lets visitors walk the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America. Trust us, it's a photo worth framing. In the summer, this day trip destination offers blue skies and fun hikes; in the fall, you get sweeping fall color; and come Christmastime, the entire SkyBridge gets lit up with thousands of twinkling holiday lights. So basically, there's no bad time to visit. gatlinburgskylift.com

Virginia: Colonial Williamsburg

Consider your boredom solved with this day trip to the largest outdoor living history museum in the country. From fun family activities like walking amongst hundreds of restored (or recreated) 18th-century buildings—like the Raleigh Tavern, the Capitol, the Governor's Palace, and the Courthouse—Colonial Williamsburg is an adventure just ready to be taken. All you have to do is get in the car. If you're lucky, you might even catch some costumed Colonial reenactors doing their thing around the grounds. One thing's for sure: You won't get bored. colonialwilliamsburg.org

West Virginia: New River Gorge Bridge

Perhaps the most well-known sight in all of this nature-filled Southern state, the New River Gorge Bridge is just one photo-worthy opportunity found in the 70,000-plus-acre park. The bridge was originally constructed over 40 years ago to reduce a winding 40-minute drive down the mountain roads to less than a minute, and West Virginians and visitors alike are always grateful for the shortcut. We suggest taking advantage of the vast outdoor activities on your day trip, like hiking, canoeing, fishing, and picnicking. It's time for a wild West Virginia adventure. nps.gov/neri

Memphis is a fun city full of musical history, culture, great food, and fun. It is Tennessee’s second-largest city, located in the southwest corner of the state. There are a wealth of day trips within a few hours drive of Memphis that are fun, educational, and exciting.

Each of these trips is three and a half hours or less drive from Memphis. The day trips selected are listed in alphabetical order. Every destination mentioned will provide a perfect day trip.

Hot Springs is a resort city with thermal mineral springs. The water is heated beneath the earth, and many believe that soaking in it or drinking it provides healing powers. I’m not sure it will heal you, but it sure feels wonderful to soak in the hot spring water. Check out the traditional mineral baths popular with travelers on Bathhouse Row . The 10 Best Day Trips to Take From San Antonio

History, Nature and Culture Abound in South-Central Texas

day trips travel

San Antonio’s geographic location in south-central Texas provides easy access to rolling hills, pristine streams, tranquil lakes and the multifaceted Texas coast. No matter which direction you choose to drive, you’re not far from adventure.

Fredericksburg

When German pioneers settled the area in the mid-1800s, many of them built small “Sunday houses” in town in addition to their primary residences on nearby farms. Since traveling by horse-and-buggy was slow and arduous, it was a hassle to ride into town and back just to attend church on Sundays. These smaller houses allowed them to make a weekend of it. They’d arrive in town on Saturday, run a few errands, stay overnight, and then head back to the farm after church. Many of these Sunday houses have been turned into lodging, and have played a key role in Fredericksburg becoming such a popular weekend destination. Amid these historic bed-and-breakfasts, you’ll also find trendy restaurants, wine bars, music venues, and theaters. About 20 miles north of Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a great spot for a morning hike. Climbing the dome-shaped hunk of pink granite is only mildly strenuous, and you’ll be rewarded with a 360-degree view of the Texas Hill Country.

New Braunfels

Another town with a strong German heritage, New Braunfels is best known as the home of the Schlitterbahn Waterpark . Many of the park’s rides are fueled by cool, all-natural river water that is pumped right back into the river after flowing through the park. The park includes slow-moving waterways for tubing as well as opportunities for high adventure, such as the Boogie Bahn surfing ride. For a mellower experience, head to the nearby Gruene Historic District and shop for antiques, souvenirs, and handcrafted gifts. When you’re ready for lunch, you’ll be within walking distance of the Gristmill Restaurant . The rustic building is perched on the banks of the Guadalupe River and features several levels of seating overlooking the beautiful scenery. If you plan to stick around into the evening, you can catch both local and high-profile country music acts at Gruene Hall . A few miles west of New Braunfels, Natural Bridge Caverns is an excellent low-key adventure on a hot day. It’s always about 70 degrees underground.

Water recreation is also a key attraction in San Marcos, but the emphasis here is on the rivers themselves instead of waterparks. Several outfitters in and around the town offer two- to four-hour tubing excursions. Most have shuttle buses to pick you up and drop you off along the river. The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment (formerly known as Aquarena Springs) has glass-bottomed boats that cruise though the pristine Spring Lake. Expert guides will explain the plant life, turtles, fish and other flora and fauna that make up this delicate ecosystem. Bargain shoppers will enjoy the area’s two major outlet malls: San Marcos Premium Outlets and Tanger Outlets . In the evenings, you can sit back with a beer and enjoy live music from local and regional bands at Cheatham Street Warehouse .

Corpus Christi

About two hours south of San Antonio, Corpus Christi has beaches in addition to many of the other amenities you might expect from a mid-sized city. The Texas State Aquarium has massive indoor and outdoor tanks that feature a huge variety of species, including, sharks, tarpon and stingrays. It also focuses many of its exhibits on species and habitats from the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which lies off the coast of southern Mexico and Central America. In the Stingray Lagoon, kids can even touch the stingrays. For a dose of military history, head to the USS Lexington , a massive aircraft carrier docked within walking distance of the aquarium. It has a flight simulator, nautical artifacts and even an on-board restaurant. When you’re ready for a swim, Malaquite Beach features a visitor center and miles of unspoiled beaches. Even though Hurricane Harvey hit the region in August 2017, Corpus Christi dodged the worst of the storm. Nearby cities Port Aransas and Rockport were more heavily damaged and are still in the process of rebuilding.

Garner State Park

The most popular state park in Texas, Garner has been a favorite summer destination for some families for generations. Situated on the Frio River, the park has excellent swimming, biking, kayaking and fishing opportunities. Featuring higher hills and deeper, more dramatic canyons than the rest of the Hill Country, Garner State Park is a photographer’s dream. Though they can be difficult to spot, the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo often nest in heavily wooded areas. There’s also a tubing outfitter on-site as well as a putt-putt golf course. If you stay into the evening during the summer, you can experience the park’s most cherished tradition: a nightly dance for all ages at the central pavilion. A short drive from the park, Frio Bat Flight offers an amazing bat-viewing opportunity. At sunset, about ten million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from Frio Cave. As the bats fly out in search of bugs to eat, red-tailed hawks and peregrine falcons swoop in and try to pick off a few bats to eat. It may be a little too brutal for young kids, but adult nature buffs will enjoy this fast-moving natural spectacle.

For two weeks in May and June every year, the Kerrville Folk Festival attracts world-class songwriters and some of the most loyal fans imaginable. The regular attendees refer to themselves affectionately as “Kerrverts,” and some of them arrive on the festival grounds days before the festival to set up their own little villages within the campground. After the on-stage performances every night, professional and amateur musicians alike sing around campfires, often until dawn. The rest of the year, Kerrville is a sleepy town with plenty of antique shops, locally owned restaurants, and a few art galleries. The Museum of Western Art exhibits a wide array of paintings and sculptures depicting cowboys, ranching and frontier life. Beautifully situated on a hilltop, Kerrville Hills Winery offers daily tastings and winery tours.

If you’re looking for a small-town getaway near San Antonio that’s not overrun by tourists in summer, Wimberley is always a good option. The “downtown” area is so small you can explore all of it in about 30 minutes. If you have kids in tow, make sure and stop at the Emily Ann Theatre & Gardens . The community theater presents plays for both kids and adults, ranging from "Princess and the Pea" to "Pride and Prejudice." Even when there’s not a performance going on, the 12-acre property offers plenty of adventure for the little ones. Wayne’s Meadow is home to ten kid-friendly gardens, including a life-size chess set and a butterfly garden. For an all-natural and refreshing swimming experience, Blue Hole is a nearby spring-fed swimming hole complete with a rope swing. Bring a picnic lunch, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the lush grass along the banks of the creek. Open only during summer, Jacob's Well is another one-of-a-kind swimming hole in Wimberley, and it's part of an extensive cave system connected to the Edwards Aquifer. The cool water bubbles up from underground to create this all-natural swimming spot. You can work up a sweat before your swim on the park's extensive network of nature trails.

The Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne (pronounced Bernie ) is an ideal spot for a brisk morning hike. Several miles of nature trails wind through a variety of landscapes, including meadows, dense woods, and rolling hills. The half-mile Marshland Trail is an easy walk along a boardwalk that offers abundant opportunities to see wildlife in the sky and water. You’ll see turtles, ducks and maybe even a stunning kingfisher diving for its prey. Despite its lackluster moniker, the Cave Without a Name is one of the most gorgeous natural features in Texas. The rippled walls and ceiling almost seem to be in motion. Concerts are sometimes held in the cave, which offers remarkable acoustics. To combine an afternoon snack with a little shopping, check out Carousel Antiques & Fickle Pickles . While these are pricey pickles, regular customers swear by these tart treats. Some have a little extra zing, with flavors ranging from garlic to jalapeno. The selection of antiques is fairly small, but it adds an interesting twist to your pickle shopping.

For a rousing start to your day in Helotes, head to Helotes Hill Country Ziplines . The nine lines range in height from 100 feet to a stomach-turning 1,000 feet. On the fastest ones, you’ll be soaring up to 35 mph. After such an exhilarating experience, you may need a glass of wine. Helotes Creek Winery is a charming little winemaker located along a narrow country road. You won’t find any snootiness here—just tasty reds, whites, cheese plates and the occasional cranapple wine slushie. The winery even has a ladies’ night on Wednesdays. For your evening entertainment, Floore’s Country Store is a one-of-a-kind music venue housed in an old dance hall. The name seems to imply that it used to be a store, but it’s been a dance hall and honky-tonk since it opened in 1942. The name is simply another example of Texas eccentricity at its finest. Willie Nelson once played here regularly and still stops by every now and then. The music schedule mostly consists of up-and-coming country singers with a few national acts sprinkled in.

Johnson City

The childhood home of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, Johnson City is also one of the most beautiful small towns in Texas. It’s situated amid rolling hills and verdant pastures dotted with sprawling old oak trees. Free tours of LBJ’s boyhood home start every half hour on the house’s front porch. Look up and you’ll see that the ceiling of the front porch is painted sky blue. This was done often in early Texas houses because it was believed that wasps wouldn’t build nests on a blue ceiling because, well, it looked like the sky. In March 1937, it was on this very porch that Lyndon Baines Johnson announced his first run for Congress. The modest home was restored and furnished to be historically accurate for the mid-1920s period.

The LBJ Ranch is just a few miles down the road. You can now get a driving permit and tour parts of the ranch without supervision; However, an expert guide will help you appreciate the ranch’s role in history. Make sure you stop and check out LBJ’s famous floating car. LBJ used to toy with reporters by touring the ranch in the car and then—without warning—driving the car directly into a lake. No matter what you think of his policies, LBJ was undoubtedly one of the nation’s most interesting presidents.

Distance from Las Vegas: 16 miles / 20 minutes

Perhaps one of the shortest day trips from Las Vegas is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. It’s perfect for a full day of adventure away from the busy city, yet close enough for a quick drive.

One of the most popular things to do is the Red Rock Canyon scenic drive . This one-way, 13 mile drive takes you through the entire conservation area. Stop at Calico II to see the vibrant red sandstone rocks.

Bring grippy hiking shoes for the 2.2 mile hike on the Calico Tanks Trail . This fun, interactive hike requires a bit of scrambling to get to the viewpoint of the Las Vegas strip. So cool!

You’ll actually need a timed entry reservation to see the conservation area from October through May, so be sure to reserve your spot in advance! If you can’t grab a spot, consider booking a Red Rock Canyon hiking tour which includes park entry.

Of course, come prepared with enough water and high protein snacks. If you’re hiking be sure to bring the 10 essentials and a satellite communicator in case of emergency.

Distance from Las Vegas: 159 miles / 2 hours, 33 minutes

8. Emerald Cave kayaking (one of the most fun things to do outside of Vegas)

lake mead day trips Las Vegas view of cave with green water and kayakers

Distance from Las Vegas: 55 miles / 58 minutes

Kayaking in the Emerald Cave is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the Vegas strip. The cave is located in the Lake Mead Recreation Area, along a calm section of the Colorado River.

Your journey to the caves will include a relaxing kayak ride along the Colorado River. The surrounding hills and cliff walls are awe-inspiring as they tower above you.

9. Mojave National Preserve

Distance from Las Vegas: 68 miles / 1 hour, 9 minutes

If you’re looking for a way to get away from Las Vegas but want somewhere with few crowds, then consider making a visit to Mojave National Preserve. In just an hour’s drive on Interstate 15 from the big city, you’ll find hiking trails, caves, and much more to explore.

First, head to Cima Road, which is home to more Joshua Trees than you’ll even be able to find within the namesake national park. These are rare trees, only growing within certain parts of the southwest.

Another one of the best things to do is to visit the Kelso Dunes. These beautiful sand dunes offer viewpoints of the surrounding mountains and the opportunity to stand on top of the tallest dune.

The Lava Tubes Trail offers a short hike and a unique experience in a cave. There aren’t many places where you’re able to climb directly into the tube, so this one shouldn’t be missed!

Other fun activities include seeing the cinder cones along Aiken Mine Road, hiking the Teutonia Peak Trail, and visiting the Mojave Desert Mailbox. Because you’ll be in the desert, be sure to dress comfortably to stay cool while you’re out exploring.

It’s also nice to have a high-clearance vehicle for the visit, as some roads can be pretty rough. Also, be sure to check the status of the roads, because wintertime may bring snow and poor weather conditions.

Horseshoe Bend is one of the most photographed sites along the Colorado River and a fantastic excursion for those traveling from Las Vegas.

While on the far end for a day trip, Horseshoe Bend is about 4.5 hours from Las Vegas. Located in Page Arizona, the iconic feature is a must-do for those traveling through the southwest.

Horseshoe Bend, part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, is one  top things to do in Page Arizona .  It can be done as a stop along with other activities in the area.

The trail and parking for Horseshoe Bend is managed by the city of Page, and doesn’t take any National Park or other park passes for entrance to the site. Parking for Horseshoe Bend is $10 and the site is open from sunrise to sunset daily.

For those visiting the site, the hike requires about 1.5 miles (out and back) to reach the viewpoint for the bend. There’s a small platform located at the end of the trail.

However, be sure to continue on past the viewpoint along the slick stones and you’ll be treated to some great other views of the bend without as many tourists around. You can even climb the small hill to get a better overlook of the site.

Beyond Horseshoe Bend, there’s plenty of other things around Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Visit to the nearby Glen Canyon Bridge and Dam is worth a quick excursion. Visitors can view the amazing engineering feats of creating both the bridge and dam in this part of the river.

There’s also great hiking nearby such as the Hanging Gardens Hike, the Chains, and The “New Wave” which is a lovely banded sandstone area close to the glen canyon dam.

You’ll want to get up early for this one! As a day trip, this is doable but a pretty long day. It would make a great weekend trip from Las Vegas, too.

Anyway, Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the famous hoodoos, which are irregularly shaped rock spires. Witness the unique beauty of this landscape from Bryce Point or Inspiration Point.

If you’re up for hiking, try the Queens Garden Trail and Navajo Loop , which is a fun, interactive trail. It’s 3.1 miles and rated as moderate, you’ll weave through hoodoos and witness the bright orange and red rocks up close.

Have a picnic at Sunset Point or enjoy the views at Sunrise Point, too. You can see all the Bryce Canyon National Park highlights in just one day!

17. Joshua Tree National Park

weekend getaway from Las Vegas view of Joshua tree with desert landscape smooth rocks sunny day

Distance from Las Vegas: 186 miles / 3 hours, 8 minutes

One of the best day trips from Las Vegas is a day in Joshua Tree . It takes about 3 hours to drive from Las Vegas to Joshua Tree National Park, but it is worth the drive and a great way to escape the city.

Joshua Tree is best during the spring or fall when temperatures are more moderate. In the summer, the park gets very hot, and in the winter it’s cold. However, if you’re taking a day trip in the winter, you will still experience the warmest part of the day in winter.

While in Joshua Tree, take the quick hike to Arch Rock, drive down Queen Valley Road, visit the Cholla Cactus Garden, and, of course, see all the Joshua Trees. One of the best places to find a high concentration of Joshua Trees is along Queen Valley Road or on Park Boulevard from the West Entrance Station.

18. Antelope Canyon (a popular tour from Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 278 miles / 4 hours, 32 minutes

Las Vegas is such a fun city to explore but many people don’t realize there are amazing places to visit outside of Las Vegas. Antelope Canyon is a popular slot canyon in Page, Arizona.

The canyon is full of beautiful Navajo Sandstone that makes for some of the most stunning views you’ll find. Getting to escape from the concrete jungle of Las Vegas is a great way to refresh and enjoy some time away from the city.

If you’re planning on visiting Antelope Canyon, there are a few things you must know.

The canyon is on Navajo land and is restricted to tours by Navajo tour guides and tours are required to visit. You’ll want to book in advance to ensure you can get a tour. If you find that Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are booked, look into tours of Antelope Canyon X .

May to October get really busy, the earlier you book your tour , the better.

To do Antelope Canyon as a day trip from Las Vegas, follow I-15 North through Saint George, Utah. Then take UT-9 to Hwy 59 towards Kanab, UT, where you’ll get on the US-89 East to Lake Powell and Page, Arizona. The drive is a little long, but it makes for a great adventure to one of the most beautiful slot canyons you can find!

19. Palm Springs

rocky canyon with mountains in distance at Tahquitz Canyon Palm Springs weekend trips from Las Vegas

Distance from Las Vegas: 231 miles / 4 hours, 9 minutes

If you’re up for a slightly longer drive, taking a day trip from Las Vegas to Palm Springs is an ideal way to add some fun and adventure to your travels. Though it’s situated about 4 hours away, there are so many ways to spend one day in Palm Springs !

You can explore the iconic downtown area, which features boutique shops, hip galleries, and tasty restaurants. Or, check out the original retro architecture on residential homes and hotels.

Outdoor lovers can venture out for a day hike at one of the many trails, such as Tahquitz Canyon. One can’t-miss activity for any first time visitor is the famous Palm Springs aerial tramway, which takes you up the nearby San Jacinto Mountains for panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

With so much natural beauty to explore, it’s no wonder why Palm Springs has become such a popular getaway spot for travelers from Las Vegas.

Be aware that summer is a tough time for hiking and strenuous activity in the California desert. If visiting in the summer months, I would recommend visiting one of the many pool and mineral springresorts.

20. Red Rock Canyon State Park

Distance from Las Vegas: 240 miles / 3 hours, 41 minutes

Did you know there are actually 2 Red Rock Canyons to escape to as a day trip from Las Vegas?

Not to be confused with the National Conservation Area just a few minutes outside of Vegas,  Red Rock Canyon State Park  is a 3.5 hour drive from Las Vegas. While it’s a long drive for a day trip, it’s doable starting before sunrise and driving back at sunset.

Located in Cantil, California, Red Rock Canyon State Park is part of the Mojave Desert. Once you’re there, you’ll be surrounded by stunning Joshua Trees and get a breathtaking view of sandstone cliffs as far as the eye can see.

Enjoy activities such as rock climbing, picnicking, easy nature walks, as well as beginner canyoneering. Best of all, you won’t find huge crowds here, so enjoy the peaceful escape from the city.

21. Grand Staircase Escalante (another favorite on this list of day trips from Las Vegas)

zebra slot canyon striped wavy canyon

Distance from Las Vegas: 213 miles / 3 hours, 26 minutes

Grand Staircase Escalante is a fun and unique day trip from Las Vegas. If you’re looking to hike some really cool slot canyons, Grand Staircase is the place to do it.

A 3.5 hour drive from Vegas, there are a  few different slot canyons  located within Grand Staircase Escalante to visit. One of the most famous is Zebra Slot Canyon, a canyon that has stripes along the wall making it look like the stripes on a zebra!

Besides hiking the slot canyons in the area, there are plenty of other amazing trails to hike in this area. To get to Grand Staircase Escalante, head northeast on I-15 towards St. George, once in St. George depending on where you want to go in Grand Staircase either head towards Kanab or head towards Bryce Canyon.

The roads inside of Grand Staircase aren’t paved and a lot of the roads require you to have a 4×4 vehicle. Make sure to always check with the visitor centers nearby in Kanab and Escalante before heading out to make sure the weather and roads are safe for exploring.

22. Alabama Hills (one of the most scenic things to do near Las Vegas)

alabama hills with snow capped mountains and road

Distance from Las Vegas: 246 miles / 4 hours, 13 minutes

Alabama Hills, California is an underrated destination that’s gained in popularity over the last decade or so. A long day trip from Las Vegas, it can be done in a single day with an early morning and late night, or better yet, as a weekend getaway from Las Vegas!

With expansive views of these smooth rocky formations, there’s quite a bit to see and do in Alabama Hills. Movie Road is aptly named based on the volume of films that have been shot here. Drive down it and recognize scenes from Iron Man and Gladiator, just to name a few.

There’s plenty of hiking opportunities in Alabama Hills , too. Grab your hiking shoes and head to the famous Mobius Arch, coming in at less than one mile. Or explore views of the snow-capped mountains on the Upper Alabama Hills Trail to Cyclops Skull Arch .

I Wore This Viral Lululemon Belt Bag Across Italy for 10 Days, and Now I'll Never Vacation Without It

It has so much space that I could easily fit my passport, wallet, sunglasses, and more.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Back in 2022 I embarked on a 10-day trek across Italy, and if there was one thing I knew I needed to pick up before the journey, it was the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag . At the time, the popular bag — the one you’ve likely seen all over the Internet — was sold out online as well as in most of the other stores across Manhattan, but the very morning of my flight I made a last ditch call to the location near my apartment and was met with nine thrilling words: “We just got them back in stock — but hurry.”

After traveling with my new bag through an airport in Norway on an unexpected layover, to the city streets of Rome, I knew that I would never go on another vacation without my belt bag — and two years later that remains to be true. Plus, right now you don’t have to search high and low for these bags like I did, because the $38 pack is currently fully in stock in 14 stunning colors on the Lululemon site, including new shades like the spring-ready Paradise Green.

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

This versatile bag is everything you could possibly need in a functional travel pack: At 7.5 inches by 2 inches by 5 inches and with a capacity of 1L, it’s spacious enough for my sunglasses, wallet, passport, keys, and phone, and is easily adjustable to fit across my body when wearing just a tank top and even when I'm tucked away in my winter coat. The primary pocket features mesh pouches on either side, which I usually pack my keys and a lip balm into, and an additional slim pocket on the back of the pouch is my favorite way to ensure my passport stays safe and protected.

Water-repellent nylon fabric makes this bag perfect for both rainy days and sweaty adventures, and unlike most bags with adjustable straps that leave one long piece left hanging, this pack is made with a thin piece of elastic that evens out the loop for a more streamlined appearance. It can even be worn as a traditional fanny pack (which I use for running outside), as well as across your body for easy access to your essentials while hurrying through the airport. Thanks to its functional and versatile design, the Everywhere Belt Bag made it onto our list of favorite fanny packs to take hiking .

Travel + Leisure / Merrell Readman

I can get overwhelmed if I have too much to carry while I’m traveling, and this bag has shown me the joys of a hands-free vacation experience. It made it much easier to get through TSA and boarding my flight because my passport was always just a short reach away, and even on outings in Florence and Rome, I was happy to not worry about my purse getting snatched off my shoulder if I were to let my guard down.

I’m not the only shopper that swears by this versatile fanny pack for travel now, and other Lululemon customers can’t help but rave about this sleek and functional bag. One shopper noted that they “travel a lot” and admitted that the bag is now “indispensable,” adding that it is the “perfect size with convenient compartments to keep well organized without the heavy bulk of a traditional purse.”

Another shopper raved that this pack is “nice if you’re traveling or just doing errands” because “if you have to pull your phone out or your wallet, [they’re] right there instead of digging through your purse to find whatever you need.”

It’s very rare that an item is actually worth the hype that it has garnered, but in this case the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag has earned every ounce of praise it has received. Not only can it fit a frankly impressive amount of essentials (I’m an overpacker), but it’s also comfortable to wear, sleek, and has quickly become one of the most-used bags in my collection.

Right now, the shopper-loved belt bag is available at Lululemon starting at $38, and is currently in stock in 14 stylish shades. Just don’t wait too long — it’s notorious for selling out quickly.

And if you're looking to elevate your travel style with other comfy and functional essentials, keep reading to find more must-have items to shop at Lululemon.

Trip Overview

Sail through millennia of history on a beautiful, seven-night Eastern Mediterranean cruise aboard the acclaimed new Emerald Azzurra . Journey from Cyprus, one of the world’s best-kept secrets, to the legendary Greek island of Rhodes and Türkiye’s pristine Turquoise Coast, where you will board private glass-bottom boats for a fascinating perspective on the submerged ruins of an ancient city. With experts guiding you through the extraordinary history of this less-traveled region, you’ll be enriched by this in-depth look at the rise and fall of ancient empires—from the Mycenaeans, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Lycians to the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans—and the historical interplay of Christianity and Islam. An optional prelude is available in Istanbul, one of the world’s most splendid cities with its ancient mosques and palaces, and the otherworldly landscapes of Türkiye’s Cappadocia region.

Schedule by Day

Depart for Larnaca, Cyprus, on an overnight flight.

Arrive this morning and transfer to the Indigo Hotel Larnaca for check-in. Guests who opt for the suggested flights will meet tour representatives at the airport and join the group transfer to the hotel.

This evening, attend a welcome reception with dinner at your leisure.

Overnight:  Indigo Hotel Larnaca

This morning, you may choose between tours of Nicosia or Kition, fascinating sites featuring millennia of cultural treasures.

Explore Cyprus’s millennia-old capital, Nicosia, once ruled by Byzantines, Venetians, and the British. Nicosia is “the world’s last divided capital,” with a UN-monitored buffer zone between the Greek Cypriot-controlled south and the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. Visit the Cyprus Museum and its extensive array of archaeological artifacts and ancient Cypriot art. After lunch, see the elaborately beautiful Selimiye Mosque, which was originally constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries as the Catholic Cathedral of Saint Sophia and later converted into an Ottoman mosque.

Alternatively, explore Larnaca starting with the ancient city of Kition, where Mycenaean Achaeans arrived in the 13th century B.C., followed by Phoenicians in the ninth century B.C. Join your expert guide to explore Kition’s remains, including the Temple of Aphrodite-Astarte, built by the Phoenicians, and a 60-foot-long Roman mosaic. After lunch, transfer to the Troodos Mountains to view the world’s largest group of painted Byzantine churches and monasteries. This UNESCO-recognized collection of monuments, richly decorated with frescoes and murals, highlights the evolution of Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting in Cyprus over 500 years. These monuments range from small churches to monasteries such as the ornate Monastery of St. John Lampadistis, with its blend of Italian Renaissance and Byzantine art.

All participants continue to Limassol and embark Emerald Azzurra . Enjoy a private performance of Cypriot dance on board and raise a Champagne flute on deck as we cruise out of the harbor in the late afternoon.

Overnight:   Emerald Azzurra

Meals: B, L, D

Step ashore in Paphos, the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, according to legend. Established by Greek settlers during the Mycenaean era, the city was eventually captured by Ptolemy I of Egypt and later the Romans, who claimed it as the island’s capital. On a guided walking tour of the Archaeological Park of Nea Paphos, a UNESCO World Heritage site, visit the exquisite Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, and Aion, ancient Roman villas built from the second through the fifth centuries A.D. Marvel at their beautifully well-preserved mosaic floors depicting mythological and hunting scenes. View the medieval ruins of the Castle of Forty Columns, a seventh-century fortress named for its many granite columns.

Transfer to the Church of Chrysopolitissa, originally founded by the apostles Paul and Barnabas in 46 A.D. See the ruins of its fourth-century basilica and medieval Ottoman baths. View the modest yet famous St. Paul’s Pillar, said to mark the spot where the apostle Paul was whipped during his first missionary journey to Cyprus. After lunch on board, visit the Tombs of the Kings, followed by a visit to the Monastery of St. Neophytos. Carved out of the mountains, it houses a noteworthy ecclesiastical museum containing icons dating from the 16th century.

Return to the ship and set sail forTürkiye. .

Overnight:  Emerald Azzurra

Attend a morning lecture as the ship sails to Antalya, Türkiye’s largest Mediterranean city, renowned for its Greek, Roman, and Byzantine landmarks against a backdrop of the Taurus Mountains.

First, head south along the coast to the ancient trade center of Perge, once claimed by Lycians, Greeks, and Romans. Perge’s archaeological site features well-preserved bath complexes, an agora, basilicas, a theater, a stadium, and impressive fortifications. Nearby is the Antalya Archaeological Museum, notable for its collection of sculptures unearthed from the ancient site. In Aspendos, stop at the renowned Roman amphitheater built during Marcus Aurelius’s reign, known for its acoustics.

Return to Antalya and Emerald Azzurra , gathering for the captain’s welcome reception and dinner this evening.

Meals: B, L, R, D

Anchor off Türkiye’s fabled Turquoise Coast, named for the beautiful blue color of the waters, and board a tender into Kas, an ancient Lycian trading port.

Explore the remarkably restored, 4,000-seat limestone Hellenistic Theater, a rare relic of the ancient Lycian city, constructed in the first century B.C. Also, behold a well-preserved Lycian tomb located in Kas’s historical center. After a transfer to Kekova Bay, board glass-bottom boats and cruise for a mesmerizing perspective on the ancient submerged city of Simena. Below your feet, watch as ruins and rock-cut tombs appear in the clear turquoise waters.

Return to the ship and set sail for the island of Rhodes.

The ancient Lycians, initially nomads, settled in mountainous southwestern Türkiye in the eighth century B.C. and became known for their cliffside rock-cut tombs. Arrive in the beautiful port of Fethiye and transfer to the UNESCO-listed ancient Lycian capital of Xanthos, set on a cliff overlooking the Xanthos River, and delve into its rich history dating back to the eighth century B.C. Uncover connections between the Lycians, Greeks, and Persians, and remnants of the city’s later conquest by the Romans.

While here, discover the Nereid Monument, an intricately crafted tomb built in the fourth century B.C., showcasing a fusion of Lycian, Greek Ionic, and Persian architectural styles. An early example of Greek-style temple-tombs and a precursor to the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the monument was named after sea nymphs from Greek mythology.

Return to the ship for lunch and depart for Rhodes.

The island of Rhodes was known in antiquity for its schools of philosophy, rhetoric, and sculpture, including its mythical Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Then visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, housed in the medieval Hospital of the Knights, and see its collection of vases, figurines, Hellenistic mosaic floors, and more.

After morning arrival into Bodrum, delve into the history of Halicarnassus, visiting the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, which showcases ancient artifacts from shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea.

Have lunch on board as the ship sails to Izmir.

Utah’s newest LDS temple has a Presbyterian touch. See photos.

The layton temple opens to public tours this week..

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) The Layton Temple opens to public tours Friday.

Another new Latter-day Saint temple opens this week to public tours, and its design was partly inspired by farming and — Presbyterians.

According to a Monday news release from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Layton Temple “includes design motifs that were influenced by the agricultural heritage” of the area, with seedlings, leafy branches and cherry blossoms inside and outside the structure.

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) The entrance of the second-floor patron waiting area in the Layton Utah Temple features this Tiffany Studio window, circa 1915, which was purchased from a United Presbyterian Church in Armenia, New York. That church was demolished in 2015.

The second floor boasts a 1915 Tiffany art piece, titled “The Resurrection.” It was purchased from a United Presbyterian Church in the small town of Amenia, New York, about 100 miles north of New York City. That church was torn down in 2015.

The Layton Temple will open to the public Friday. Free tours will continue Mondays through Saturdays through June 1. Reservations are recommended and can be made online.

Church President Russell M. Nelson announced the temple in April 2018 . “We want to bring temples closer to the expanding membership of the church,” Nelson said at the time. A ceremonial groundbreaking in May 2020 launched official construction on the 11.87-acre site at 1400 Oak Hills Drive.

The three-story, nearly 94,000-square-foot structure features a golden Angel Moroni statue atop one of its twin spires. The temple is constructed of precast concrete panels over a structural steel frame and cast-in-place concrete shear walls.

Church apostle David A. Bednar will preside at the dedication of the temple June 16.

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) The Celestial Room in the Layton Utah Temple.

It is the second temple in Davis County, joining Bountiful, which opened in 1995. A third Davis County temple, in Syracuse, is under construction. The Layton Temple will be the 195th operating Latter-day Saint temple in the world, according to the news release, and the 22nd temple completed in Utah.

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) The baptistry inside the Layton Utah Temple.

It will be the second to be dedicated in the Beehive State in June. Apostle Gerrit W. Gong is poised to perform those honors for the Taylorsville Temple, now open to tours through May 18, on June 2.

Layton and Taylorsville will join 17 other temples currently functioning in Utah. They are Bountiful, Brigham City, Cedar City, Draper, Jordan River (South Jordan), Logan, Monticello, Mount Timpanogos (American Fork), Ogden, Oquirrh Mountain (South Jordan), Orem , Payson, Provo City Center (converted from the former Provo Tabernacle ), Red Cliffs (St. George — dedicated in March ); Saratoga Springs, St. George and Vernal.

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) A chandelier in the Celestial Room of the Layton Utah Temple.

The iconic Salt Lake Temple is undergoing extensive renovation and is expected to reopen in 2026. The space-age Provo Temple closed in February , and — despite the efforts of some community members and preservationists — is being overhauled. (It will be renamed the Provo Rock Canyon Temple.) Renovations were recently completed for the Manti Temple, another pioneer-era architectural gem, which is set to be rededicated Sunday by apostle Ronald A. Rasband.

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) The main staircase in the Layton Utah Temple.

Eight more — Deseret Peak (Tooele), Ephraim, Heber Valley, Lehi , Lindon, Smithfield, Syracuse and West Jordan — are either under construction or in planning stages. When all are completed, that will bring the number of temples in Utah to a whopping 30.

Nelson has announced 168, or 48%, of the global faith’s 350 planned or existing temples around the world.

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) A mural above a window pane in the Layton Utah Temple. The mural shows the baptism of Jesus.

Latter-day Saints view a temple as a House of the Lord, a place where devout members participate in their religion’s most sacred rituals, including eternal marriage.
