Looking up at four Ohio state flags flying in front of a government building. You can also see a few high rises. The Ohio state flag has a triangle cut out from the middle of it form the the bottom, has red and white stripes, and a blue triangle with white stars and a white O with a red center.

15 Best Ohio Day Trips (Hidden Gems, Small Towns & More!)

Rock and roll hall of fame museum makes for an awesome ohio day trips activity.

If you are looking for an activity that is unique to Ohio, then consider heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

It is one of the most incredible things to do in Ohio because it is the only home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The museum is located in downtown Cleveland, right by Lake Erie.

Inside the massive 55,000 square foot building, you’ll find several levels of exhibits dedicated to the history of Rock and Roll.

The I.M. Pei-designed building also houses the offices of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it’s where the artists who are inducted every year are decided on.

You’ll also find souvenir shops and a cafe, which means you can easily spend the entire day exploring this super-unique museum in Ohio.

This is one of the most perfect Ohio day trips for music lovers!

The exterior of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one of the best Ohio day trips. It is a pyramid shaped glass building with a big red sign that says 'long live rock' in front of it. You can also see a sign that says 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame' and looks like it has black and red speakers on it.

Explore The Ohio Caverns

The Ohio Caverns are definitely one of the best hidden gems of the Midwest .

Visitors have been flocking to these cool underground tunnels almost since they were first discovered between 1897 and 1925.

Now, the caverns are known as ‘America’s Most Colorful Caverns’ and still attract thousands of visitors every year.

Depending on the time of the year, the caverns are open for tours at different times.

There are several different types of tours you can take too.

But no matter when you go, you’re sure to enjoy this fun place to go in Ohio.

Looking down a narrow path inside a cavern in Ohio. You can see interest rock formations from both the top and bottom of the cavern that creates an optical illusion. The rocks are different shades of tan.

Visit Chateau Laroche

When you think of Ohio, castles probably don’t come to mind.

But they should!

Ohio is home to several castles , and one of those is Chateau Laroche.

Chateau Laroche is often called Loveland Castle by locals, simply because you can find it in the town of Loveland, Ohio.

The Chateau is a full-size replica of a European castle and features a mishmash of different architectural styles from different European countries.

You will see influences from English, French, and German architectural styles as well as four turrets, each of which has a different style.

The castle is now a museum, where you can tour the inside as well as the grounds, and learn about its eccentric builder.

The exterior of an eclectically designed stone castle in Ohio. There are several towers in different shapes, long narrow windows, and doorways with arched entries. Behind the castle you can see some trees. One of the best Ohio day trips.

Explore The German Village In Columbus

One of the best day trips in Ohio is a day spent in the German Village in Columbus.

The German Village is a charming neighborhood in Columbus.

You’ll find beautiful brick homes and buildings, many originally built in the mid-1800s by the area’s original German immigrants.

It is one of the best places in Columbus to explore one-of-a-kind boutiques, restaurants, and admire the antique architecture.

Just west of the German Village you can also find Columbus’ Brewery District.

The Brewery District was also originally built by the area’s German immigrants and was the hub of the city’s brewing culture.

Even today, it is still one of the best places in Ohio to stroll through.

Amish Country Is A Must For Ohio Day Trips

You can’t visit Ohio and not at least take a detour into Amish Country as it is one of the best Ohio day trips.

Ohio’s Amish Country is located in the east-central area of the state and is easily accessible from most major highways.

While there, you’ll find that there are a lot of unique things to do .

I suggest sampling some authentic Amish food, perusing through the shops and stalls full of Amish-made goods, and taking a scenic drive through the beautiful Amish Country landscape.

Amish Country is also one of the best places in Ohio to drive under one of the famous covered bridges .

The local Amish are very welcoming to visitors, but please be respectful of their lifestyle and religious beliefs.

That includes not photographing them, remembering that they take Sunday as a day of complete rest, and look out for horse-and-buggies while you’re driving.

Check out our list of other festivals and events in Ohio.

Visit The Pro Football Hall Of Fame In Canton

Football fans will love this fun option for day trips in Ohio.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton Ohio.

Inside, you’ll find tons of exhibits all relating to American football.

It’s no surprise that football fans travel from all over the world to spend the day exploring this really unique museum experience.

There are interactive exhibits and fascinating tours that teach you all about the history of football and some of its most iconic players.

You will even find exhibits dedicated to each Pro Football team, so you will be able to admire memorabilia from your favorite team.

Inside the Super Bowl Theater, you’ll also be able to view videos that highlight some of football’s superstars.

The exterior of the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. It is a partially brick building with a large entry made of floor to ceiling windows inside a white stone portion of the building. You can see a sign for the museum and pictures hanging in the building of different football players.

Step Into History At The National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center

You can find the National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

It is specifically located along the banks of the Ohio River because the Ohio River used to be a natural divider between ‘free’ and ‘slave’ states.

The ‘free’ states were those above the Ohio River and the ‘slave’ states were those below the Ohio River.

So it was naturally one of the best crossing points for enslaved peoples looking to escape.

Now you can learn about the history of the Underground Rail Road in Ohio at the center.

The center highlights stories of those who helped enslaved peoples escape to Ohio as well as the stories of those who managed to find freedom in Ohio.

It is an incredibly moving museum.

While we believe that slavery ended in America with the end of the Civil War, that is sadly not the case.

Slavery continues to occur every day in the form of human trafficking, even in America.

Alongside the exhibits about the Underground Rail Road, you’ll also find exhibits that highlight and inform visitors about the modern-day slave trade.

The exterior of the National Underground Railroad Freedom center. It is a stone building with different angles and a dark brick roof and siding. Behind it you can see a small ferris wheel and in front of it is a courtyard with small trees.

Admire The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves

The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves are an Ohio natural wonder on Kelleys Island.

It is an island just off the coast of Lake Erie near Sandusky.

Kelleys Island is super tiny and you can only reach it via ferry.

So keep that in mind when you are planning this Ohio day trip adventure.

To get around the island you will need to walk.

There are no cars permitted, but at only four miles by two miles, that probably will not be a problem.

You can see a few things on the tiny island, but the most popular is the glacial grooves.

The grooves were created by a glacier slowly sliding on the landscape and carving the grooves over time.

It is one of the coolest places to go in Ohio.

Looking down the path of the Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves. They are smoothed out rock grooves in a dark grey rock. The grooves all fluctuate in depth and shape. In the distance you can see a metal bridge with trees behind it crossing the grooves. One of the best Ohio day trips.

Put-In-Bay For One Of The Most Romantic Ohio Day Trips

The small town of Put-in-Bay is a great spot for a romantic getaway or even just a romantic day trip.

It is located on an island on the shores of Lake Erie, so you’ll be surrounded by beautiful beach views.

You can walk around the island, check out the shops, get a delicious meal, or just stroll along the sand.

Put-in-Bay is also home to Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.

The memorial was put in place to remember the Battle of Lake Erie and the peace that followed for Canada, Britain, and the United States.

The small island also has its own state park, which is near Put-in-Bay, called the South Bass Island State Park.

There are also a few museums, a butterfly house, and a limestone cave, all waiting for you to explore them.

An aerial view of Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island. You can see a large stone tower memorial, grassy areas with trees, a few buildings, and a boat marina. The island is surrounded by water in Lake Erie.

Hocking Hills State Park Is One Of The Best Ohio Day Trips

One of my favorite places to go in Ohio is Hocking Hills State Park .

Hocking Hills State Park is a natural Ohio attraction that everyone should take the time to visit.

While you explore the park you’ll find gorgeous waterfalls , scenic hiking trails , and unique rock formations dotted throughout the lush forest landscape.

The area around the state park is also full of fun activities. There are shops, restaurants, and historic museums.

If you are looking to escape to the great outdoors for one of your next day trips in Ohio, then you can’t go wrong with a day spent at Hocking Hills State Park.

A waterfall cascading over dark stone into a pool of blue water. The rock formation is surround by trees and in the distance you can see a stone bridge that goes over the waterfall. The trees have green, yellow, and orange leaves. One of the best Ohio day trips.

Explore Ashtabula Beaches And Parks

Ashtabula is an adorable small town, probably best known for its wonderful Lakeshore Park.

The Lakeshore Park is located on the shores of Lake Erie and is about 54 acres of trails, sandy shores, and park area.

What makes the park and the beaches of Ashtabula so popular are actually a few different things.

The beaches are very pretty, and Lakeshore Park is full of amenities.

There are grassy areas where you can picnic or relax and play some horseshoe, a playground for kids, volleyball courts, pavilions, and even a public boat dock.

You could easily spend an entire day in Ashtabula.

That’s what makes it one of the best small towns in Ohio for a day trip.

An aerial view of looking down the Lake Erie coast in Ashtabula. The water is very blue and the shoreline is mostly rocky or grassy. You can see a large area of trees and then some houses that are very close to the shore line, up a slight hill.

Westerville Is One Of The Cutest Small Towns In Ohio

If you are looking to explore one of the cutest small towns in Ohio , head to Westerville.

For those near Columbus, Westerville is just a short 20-minute drive away.

In the small town, you will find a great main street with unique shops and restaurants.

You can stroll through the Sharon Woods Metro Park or the Inniswood Metro Garden if you want to enjoy some beautiful small-town landscapes.

For those that are interested in history, Westerville is a cool place to visit.

A fun fact about the town is that it was called ‘The Dry Capital of the World’ because it continued the prohibition of alcohol long after the US rolled back prohibition laws.

While you are in town, history lovers should also make a stop at the historic Everal Barn and Homestead.

Westerville is a quaint little town that is easily one of the best places to go in Ohio.

Looking across a pond at a brick farmhouse that has a few smaller buildings around it. Near the shore of the pond is a large white church with a steeple. The area is grassy and there are trees with red, yellow, and orange leaves on them.

Explore Geneva-On-The-Lake Wineries

Geneva-on-the-Lake has a lot to offer for those looking to plan fun day trips in Ohio.

The town was one of the first lakeside resort towns in Ohio, is a great romantic getaway , and has tons of shops and restaurants to try out.

But one of the best things about Geneva-on-the-Lake is the area’s wineries.

Within about a 30-mile radius, all around Geneva-on-the-Lake, there are at least 20 different wineries.

You can choose to take your own winery tour or take one that is offered by one of the wine tour companies in the area.

People come from all over the state to spend a day sampling one-of-a-kind wines and stroll through the picturesque vineyards.

A close up image of purple grapes on a vine in a vineyard. The leaves around the grapes are very green and you can just barely see a cloudy sky and a grassy path below the plant.

Stroll Through The Holden Arboretum

You can find the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland Ohio.

It is actually one of the largest botanical gardens and arboretums in the United States.

A trip to the Holden Arboretum can easily fill a day.

There are over 3,000 acres of natural areas and sensitive habitats.

Additionally, there are about 600 acres of planned gardens.

The arboretum has been open since 1931 and is one of the best places to go in Ohio if you want to explore a unique landscape.

A pond that has lily pads, grasses, and large plants in it. There is also a goose with goslings swimming behind it. In the distance, on the shore of the pond, you can see lots of trees and tall grasses. One of the best Ohio day trips.

Enjoy Family Ohio Day Trips To Cedar Point Amusement Park

One of the best family-friendly Ohio day trips is Cedar Point Amusement Park.

Cedar Point is located in Sandusky on a Lake Erie peninsula.

Ohio also has Cedar Point partly to thank for the title of “Roller Coaster Capital of the World”.

The amusement park has 18 roller coasters, all at different thrill levels.

Because it is also near the beach, there is a waterpark and you can also enjoy a private beach area with your ticket to the park.

Cedar Point is a popular family destination in the warmer months.

It is easily one of the best amusement parks in the Midwest , and it is one of the most fun places to go in Ohio.

Looking at a wooden rollercoaster. The sky is dark and there are a few trees near the rollercoaster.

There are so many fun options for Ohio day trips on this list, it is hard to pick just one.

But no matter what mood you are in or what interests you, there are cool places to go in Ohio for your next day trip.

Have you been to any of these fun Ohio destinations?

I would love to hear about your day trips in Ohio, so leave me a comment!

Packing Tips When Taking Day Ohio Day Trips

Read about how to travel with just carry-on sized luggage to make your trip easier and more organized.

A  concealed travel pouch may be one of the most important items you bring along when taking day trips in Ohio.  It is  always   important  to protect your personal information. Identity thieves are everywhere.

This  unisex RFID-blocking concealed travel pouch is  lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind. You can place it under your hiking clothes next to your body to carry your ID safely.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with RFID protection, as I do, these  RFID  sleeves  are the perfect solution.

This configuration comes with enough credit card sleeves that the entire family would be protected. They are slim too, so they will easily fit into your pouch or wallet.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external  charging battery . This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery  is  the exact one  I carry with me on all of my trips.

It can be used on a variety of phones, not just an iPhone like I have. And wow is it fast!

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and is so easy to use.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking selfies with all those nature shots in Iowa.

Hydration is so important when hiking. You want to remain hydrated throughout your Ohio travels to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels.

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for hiking and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

The replaceable carbon filter ensures fresh water when you want it.

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car. Then this  set of collapsible silicone foldable water bottles  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. when celebrating Christmas in Ohio. No matter the time of day or evening.

This   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great.

It is very affordable and is available in many color options for you to choose from. The fact that it folds down into a zippered pouch will make it easy to pack!

Being a Buckeye myself I loved your list. I’ve been to several of them. Just a quick shout out about Kelley’s Island-you are allowed to drive cars on the island. Thanks again for the nice post.

Best romantic getaways in the U.S.

Sonoma County, CA

1.  Sonoma County, CA

It’s easy to swoon over Sonoma . While wine tasting is the main attraction, there's so much more to this sprawling California county. Get pampered at world-class spas (head to  Dawn Ranch  for an oasis set among the redwoods); dine your heart out at restaurants rooted in seasonal California fare (snag a seat at Healdbsurg's buzziest new opening,  Goodnight’s Prime Steak + Spirits ); or head to the coast to take in stunning ocean views at boutique hotels like  Nick's Cove  or  Timber Cove (grab a bite at their waterfront restaurants or stay the night).

Scottsdale, AZ

2.  Scottsdale, AZ

Set amid the stunning Sonoran desert, the backdrop to a vacation in Scottsdale  easily checks the romantic box. This Arizona town has long been a destination for those looking to be pampered and relax—and in recent years, has experienced a renewed sense of interest from travelers thanks to buzzy restaurants (check out FnB Restaurant and Fat Ox ), a myriad of wellness experiences, and even an up-and-coming wine scene (don't skip  Aridus Winery 's tasting room in Old Town). Couples looking for an urban retreat will enjoy a stay at the midcentury marvel that is the  Hotel Valley Ho , and for those looking to escape reality in a more remote setting, don't miss the luxurious  Sanctuary Camelback Mountain (Jay Z and Beyoncé honeymooned here, if that tells you anything.)

Kauai, HI

3.  Kauai, HI

If your version of paradise includes rugged cliffs and sunny sand, emerald hills and epic hikes, fire up your laptop and book a trip to  Kauai . The 'Garden Isle' is a verdant wonderland where you can take a helicopter ride past the Jurassic Park waterfall, kayak Hawaii's only navigable river or walk the wild Na Pali Coast—though no one will blame you for kicking back with a cocktail on the beach. For an indulgent stay, book a room at the brand-new sustainable luxury resort,  1 Hotel Hanalei Bay.

Savannah, GA

4.  Savannah, GA

Savannah  wears its charm in the open: classic homes, historic squares and impossibly photogenic moss-covered trees. But there's more to this Southern belle than gawking at her sights. Go for a stroll on Tybee Island , then dig into expertly crafted Cajun and low-country cooking at Alligator Soul (where, yes, there's gator on the menu). Finish things off at Lulu's Chocolate Bar and share a slice of the rum-brushed strawberry suspension cake.

San Juan Islands, WA

5.  San Juan Islands, WA

This Puget Sound escape—where the most populated town is just one square mile—is about escaping it all. Life on the San Juan Islands  means lighthouse strolls, coastal kayaking, visits to alpaca or lavender farms, and fresh seafood. Book a summer whale watch session and spot one of three local orca pods before bed at the Bird Rock Hotel , where loaner bikes let you explore at the right pace.

The Berkshires, MA

6.  The Berkshires, MA

The Berkshires aren't just one town but a collection of several that are quaint and charming in their way. Start with Lenox, a scenic and lush town once the home of writer Edith Wharton, and Stockbridge, a town bursting with Norman Rockwell-inspired streets. There’s also North Adams, replete with picturesque churches, and Williamstown, surrounded by mountains and farmland. Stroll together hand-in-hand along the historic downtown streets, hit a hiking trail, and relax together in a B&B: there's romance here no matter where your days (and nights) take you.

Sun Valley, ID

7.  Sun Valley, ID

No matter the time of year, the Sun Valley , Idaho region, is a perfect choice for a little romance. In the winter, ski during the day and get cozy at night; in the spring and summer, take in wildflower and waterful hikes; and when autumn rolls in, take in some of the most stunning foliage views in the country. Stay at the historic Sun Valley Resort  or the neighboring town, Ketchum, at the LimeLight Ketchum, which features a year-round heated pool and mountain views that set the mood.

New Paltz, NY

8.  New Paltz, NY

Mohonk Mountain House  in New Paltz, NY, is a gorgeous retreat two hours from NYC that dates back to 1869. Since then, Mohonk has grown enormously, evident in the varying styles of the main building as well as through the scattered wooden “summer houses” that dot the landscape. Head here for romantic Victorian rooms with wood-burning fireplaces, outstanding views from surrounding trails, live music, and events. The resort hosts occasional "Romantic Couples' Weekends" with love-themed activities for you and your beau.

New Orleans

9.  New Orleans

There's something magical about New Orleans —the cobblestone streets of the French Quarter, the 100+-year-old candlelit restaurants, the live music wafting through the air. Look past the rowdiness of Bourbon Street, and you'll find a city ripe for romance: stroll past historic mansions in the Garden District, get a cocktail at the Carousel Bar , and unwind at a luxurious hotel like the Eliza Jane .

Aspen, CO

10.  Aspen, CO

There’s no wrong time to book a trip to Aspen , a Rocky Mountain town where romantic enticements beckon all year long. From luxury hotels and sophisticated dining to hot air ballooning and legendary slopes, there’s a reason Aspen has a reputation for over-the-top thrills. Whether you’re here to ski with your partner, take on some rapids, or settle into a couple’s massage at the extravagant St. Regis (don’t miss the hotel's nightly champagne sabering, either), you’ll leave Aspen more in love than ever.

Glacier National Park, MT

11.  Glacier National Park, MT

With mountain lakes surrounded by rocky peaks, 600ft waterfalls and glaciers (expected to melt in the next 30 years), Glacier National Park deserves a place on your to-do list. Hike, horseback ride, hop a boat, spot a grizzly bear or mountain goat, and then cozy up over a fire or hearty meal. Given the range of accommodations offered—from lodges to campsites to backcountry chalets well worth the walk—this is the ideal destination to combine adventure and affection.

New York, NY

12.  New York, NY

With its relentless bustle, New York romance is about connecting with your partner amid the chaos. Go classic: Rent a rowboat in Central Park and get gussied up for dinner at La Grenouille , serving time-honored French delicacies in a flower-arrangement-filled space. Or throw tradition to the wind: Get into frisky business at the Museum of Sex or take the tram to Roosevelt Island for lofty, 360-degree city views.

Nantucket, MA

13.  Nantucket, MA

Nantucket is the perfect setting for a romance novel—or real-life romance. With white-sand beaches, cobblestone streets and New England charm everywhere you look, this tiny island (which is only 14 miles in length) is the perfect place to get away if you're looking for seaside splendor. Splurge on luxury accommodations (there are plenty to choose from, but we recommend the Wauwinet ), have a picnic on the beach or slide into a booth at a historic restaurant, or bike around the island. The high season is Memorial Day through Labor Day, but the shoulder months can be just as lovely without the crowds.

Big Sur, CA

14.  Big Sur, CA

With rolling redwood forests and cliffs jutting over turquoise water, Big Sur  is idyllic in the extreme. Splurge at the Post Ranch Inn , where your luxury bungalow is TV- and telephone-free, or snuggle up inside a yurt at Treebones . Come during the summer when you can kayak with sea otters, take a moonlit tour of the Point Sur lighthouse or stay up late for a dip in the Esalen Hot Springs .

Harpers Ferry, WV

15.  Harpers Ferry, WV

Although Harpers Ferry played a role in igniting the Civil War, today's vibe is far more romantic than revolutionary. The core of Harpers Ferry—which sits at the edge of the Shenandoah River, the Potomac River, and the Blue Ridge Mountains—is a national historic park with forts, museums, cobbled streets, and charm aplenty. You’ll also find 22 miles of hiking trails outside the city center, and in the warmer months, the town is an ideal launch point for kayaking, whitewater rafting, and tubing. It won't take long to understand why locals call West Virginia 'almost heaven.'

Martha’s Vineyard, MA

16.  Martha’s Vineyard, MA

The Obamas' go-to summer getaway, Martha's Vineyard has always charmed visitors with its windswept beaches and sweet towns. Rent a home or base yourself at Hob Knob in Edgartown, the island’s picture-perfect, oldest settlement with narrow streets, red-brick pavements and white clapboard homes. Hit the beach, browse local shops, marvel over the sunset and stuff yourself with fresh seafood—it’s not a Vineyard visit without lobster from Larsen’s Fish Market .

Mackinac Island, MI

17.  Mackinac Island, MI

Nothing beats Michigan in the summer—the crystal blue water, perfect weather, and friendly people. One of the most quaint spots in the state is  Mackinac Island , situated on Lake Huron between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. With stunning national parks, car-free streets, charming B&Bs, and plenty of outdoor activities, this is a place where you can lazily enjoy the island life or be active from sunrise to sunset.

Charleston, SC

18.  Charleston, SC

This picturesque Southern city doesn’t just feel like a romantic movie set; Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook was actually filmed around Charleston . Turn it into the background of your love story as you roam the historic district, explore the vibrant dining scene and wander through the gardens at Boone Hall .

Block Island, RI

19.  Block Island, RI

Dubbed 'Island of the Little God' by the Narragansett tribe, this petite isle 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island is a world apart from the mainland. Rent a bike or moped, grab a sandwich from Three Sisters and start discovering your favorite beach or scenic trail.

Sedona, AZ

20.  Sedona, AZ

Free your spiritual side in Sedona , a desert enclave where natural vortexes emit mystical energy. Even if communing with the Earth isn't your thing, visiting for the spectacular slot-canyon hiking and world-class accommodations is worth it. Spoil yourself in a L'Auberge de Sedona cottage complete with an outdoor shower or stay at Enchantment Resort and book a couple’s treatment at the acclaimed Mii Amo spa .

San Diego, CA

21.  San Diego, CA

With 322 days of annual sunshine, San Diego begs you to get outside and explore. Hit the waves at Pacific Beach, ride bikes along the boardwalk, charter a boat or grab a patch of sand and snuggle up with your partner. The zoo is rightfully renowned and, when you've worked up an appetite , head to the Marine Room for dinner at high tide when the Pacific crashes against the windows.

Amelia Island, FL

22.  Amelia Island, FL

Barely inside the Florida border, this Atlantic Coast barrier island hits the spot for a luxury weekend or low-key retreat. Book a room at a historic B&B or bed down overlooking the beach at the Ritz-Carlton . Then, spend your days soaking up the sun, riding horses along the shoreline or on the water on a fishing charter or sightseeing tour. Keep the camera ready for sea turtles, manatees and dolphins.

Looking to escape the everyday grind with a picture-perfect romantic holiday?

We’ve looked all over the USA and plucked out 10 weekend getaways that cater to couples of all tastes. From mountains to beaches, big cities to small towns, sprawling national parks to epic West Coast drives, here are the best places in the US for a romantic escape from it all.

A couple standing on the Bixby Bridge, looking over the view, on highway 1 near the rocky Big Sur coastline of the Pacific Ocean California, USA

1. Big Sur, California

Best for couples who love the open road

Enjoy quality time with breathtaking views on one of the country’s most celebrated road trips. Big Sur ’s wild stretch of Hwy 1 matches unparalleled vistas with hidden beaches and hiking opportunities, bubbling hot springs and excellent dining options – which makes it ideal for a couple looking to hit the road and reconnect with nature, without going totally rustic .

What’s more, the drive is better as a duo: if you take turns, you’ll both have a chance to look out the window, and to get behind the wheel. (Just be sure to check your route before you set out, as rockslides, flooding, wildfires and auto accidents can all trigger closures.)

Start north of Big Sur at Carmel-by-the-Sea , and give yourself time to explore a village renowned for its artistic charm, from its galleries and shopping to its 18th-century mission . On your way south, stop at Point Lobos State Park to watch the sea lions cavorting on the coast, then pause near the highly Instagrammable Bixby Bridge to snap a pic or two.

A couple in the distance, walking along a white-sand beach with palm trees

2. Key Biscayne, Florida

Best for sun-seeking couples

Less than 10 miles from downtown, Key Biscayne isn’t technically part of Miami . Yet it’s close and continuous enough with the city that it could be an outer neighborhood – if it didn’t feel so darn different. From skyscrapers and scene-y clubs to quiet white-sand beaches , bike-friendly streets and water sports galore, this barrier island promises to transport you and your loved one far from the urban clamor.

Between its 19th-century lighthouse – the oldest standing structure in all of Florida – and its 1.25-mile natural beach, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is a must-visit. Couples can recharge together under an umbrella, or paddle a kayak for two on the ocean waves. If you’re arriving by sea, head straight for Boater’s Grill , where you can dock at No Name Harbor and tuck into bacalao fritters and fresh-caught snapper.

The Rusty Pelican is another local institution that’s going strong after more than half a century. Reserve a table for brunch or time it to sunset to make the most of the magnificent waterfront location on Rickenbacker Marina.

A library and church in Harrisville, New Hampshire, USA

3. Monadnock Region, New Hampshire

Best for small-town-loving couples

The southwest corner of New Hampshire is dotted with historic towns that exude charm – and provide a backdrop for romantic touring. Make a weekend of it by hitting the back roads and driving your way from village to village, one white-spired church and town green at a time.

Harrisville (population 953) boasts a beautifully preserved red-brick mill complex once powered by the waterfall that flows next to it; today, it’s home to knitting outfitter  Harrisville Designs . After a walk around the village (it won’t take long), stop for lunch at the picture-perfect Harrisville General Store . Nearby Hancock (pop 1654) has one of the loveliest Main Sts around, lined with historic homes with huge porches and white-picket fences; the storied Hancock Inn , dating to 1789, is scheduled to reopen in 2024. Peterborough (in these parts, a small city – of 6284 people) is the regional hub for the arts, and its small streets are filled with galleries , small museums and original shops. (It’s also a creative muse itself, supposedly serving as the inspiration for Grover’s Corners in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town .)

You won’t have to drive far to see the massif that lends its name to the area. If you’re after a bit of exertion after all that car time, Monadnock , one of the world’s most-climbed mountains, offers a moderate hike with a major payoff: 360° views from its rocky, 3165-ft summit that on clear days stretch as far as Boston .

A fish on a platter in a nice restaurant.

4. Williamsburg, New York City

Best for gourmet couples

Even in New York City ’s standout restaurant scene, North Brooklyn boasts a particular embarrassment of riches. By basing yourself in Williamsburg, you’ll be at the center of the action.

Whether you’re after a fun date over cha siu “McRibs” and “MSG martinis” or a morning-after brunch of salted-egg-custard french toast, Cantonese-American Bonnie’s is a hot ticket. In South Williamsburg, elegant Aldama serves elevated takes on the street foods of central Mexico, while over by the BQE, Llama Inn ’s dimly lit dining room sets the scene for romance over beautifully rendered Peruvian fare.

On the northern edge of the neighborhood, KRU does modern twists on Thai classics in industrial-chic, apothecary-esque environs. And for a casual bite, Taqueria Ramírez slings meaty Mexico City–style tacos from a subway-tiled storefront in Greenpoint. Come prepared to queue up for your tripa , campechano , longaniza , suadero  and al pastor on weekends.

Couple standing on a rock at sunset in Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA

5. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Best for outdoorsy couples

The two distinct desert ecosystems of Joshua Tree National Park present myriad opportunities for open-air bonding – think spring wildflowers, all sorts of animals, stunning sunsets and epic stargazing. If you prefer to stroll hand in hand, there are short walks and nature trails, with more-strenuous treks – plus biking, backpacking and rock-climbing – if you’d rather work up a sweat. (However you get out and about, pack more water than you’ll think you’ll need in this hot, dry, gorgeous place.)

You’ll find on-site campgrounds – but renting romantic accommodations nearby takes things up a notch. Barely 10 miles from the park gate, Cascade Trails Mustang Sanctuary offers five glamping tents alongside equine experiences, such as sunset trail excursions and private stargazing rides (bookable even if you’re not staying overnight).

Take a dip in the heated pool, then cozy up in a sleek Airstream trailer at AutoCamp Joshua Tree , or hit the mineral spa and pool at the adults-only, 420-friendly, clothing-optional Mi Kasa Hot Springs . Celebrating something special? Peruse Plum Guide’s listings for the perfectly private, modern abode.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Best for couples who love mixing old and new

A city founded by the Spanish more than 400 years ago is today a center of artistic innovation. Strict planning laws mandate the use of adobe in all construction (even gas stations!), giving Santa Fe its signature earth-toned look and sense of architectural harmony and continuity. Yet riots of color and imagination lie behind those earthen walls.

In and around the historic Plaza , world-class museums showcase paintings by famous resident Georgia O’Keeffe , as well as new work by local Indigenous artists . Further afield, the Museum of International Folk Art teems with everything from brightly painted masks to carved dolls to beaded jewelry and much, much more (it’s the world’s largest such collection).

But perhaps no site exemplifies Santa Fe’s vibe of free-spirited inventiveness better than Meow Wolf . An artist collective has transformed a former bowling alley (donated by another Santa Fe creative, George RR Martin, of Game of Thrones fame) into an immersive wonderland, with trippy lights, hidden passageways and a head-scratching narrative to guide visitors through all the madness. Rather than stepping into history, here you’ll feel you’ll have stepped into another dimension.

Two men cycling by fall foliage, Aspen, Colorado, USA

7. Aspen, Colorado

Best for high-rolling couples

Ritzy Aspen is a legendary celebrity hangout, particularly during the peak winter months , when the perfect powder, jaw-dropping real estate and impeccable dining options draw a steady crowd of A-listers – and prices to match. That said, it’s not all snow days : with biking, hiking and cultural events during the other months of the year, it’s a true four-season destination. While planning a budget weekend here would be a tall order, this is a great place to go all out.

If you’re that other kind of high-rolling couple , there’s plenty for you as well. Like the rest of Colorado, Aspen has a selection of recreational and medical marijuana dispensaries ; Dalwhinnie is worth a stop for the eye candy alone. A tasteful boutique with a cowboy–cousin–of–Ralph Lauren aesthetic, it caters to the VIP market, juxtaposing pre-rolled joints, jars of flower and deluxe accessories with clothing, jewelry and home goods worth tens of thousands. As you’d expect in a place like this, prices are higher than at your average dispensary.

A mural of President Barack Obama is seen in the Rogers Park neighborhood, Chicago, Illinois, USA

8. Rogers Park, Chicago

Best for culture-oriented couples

Hyde Park and Bucktown–Wicker Park are well known for their architectural bona fides and trendsetting, art-inspired style. But to mingle with a young crowd of diverse creatives, the Far North Side community of Rogers Park is the place to head. With 60-plus languages spoken and too many cuisines to count – from Caribbean to Mexican to Ethiopian to Japanese – this is the Chicago neighborhood that, based on recent census data, “most closely matches the racial and ethnic breakdown of the entire city,” per the Chicago Sun-Times .

During the day, check out the Mile of Murals on Glenwood Ave, wander through the galleries and studios of the Glenwood Arts District and stop by the Leather Archives & Museum for a peek at the history and culture of leather, kink, fetish and BDSM.

By night, catch original works at the Factory Theater , world music and magicians at Rhapsody and stories from underrepresented communities – expressed via stage combat! – at Babes With Blades . Then grab a nightcap at the romantic Le Piano , an intimate bar and performance space anchored by – yes – a grand piano.

The main building of the Inn at Little Washington, Washington, Virginia, USA

9. Washington, Virginia

Best for history-loving couples

About a 90-minute drive west of DC in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley , the country’s original Washington sits in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Expect a quaint small town with world-famous accommodations.

Relais & Châteaux’s Inn at Little Washington is home to the only three-Michelin-star restaurant in the DC metro area. Since it’s beloved for its tasting menus, you just might spot members of the other Washington’s elite at the next table over. (You may also recall its unique approach to filling the dining room post-lockdown ).

You won’t have to travel far to enjoy more of this charmer of a town. Sip a glass of locally made wine at Gadino Cellars or Little Washington Winery , duck in and out of the village’s shops and galleries, or head underground to check out the biggest caverns in the eastern US . You can also do some paddling on the Shenandoah River, motor south to spectacular Skyline Dr and hit the rest of nearby Shenandoah National Park for adventures both on foot and two wheels .

shutterstock1266881278.jpg

10. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Best for LGBTIQ+ couples

One of the most welcoming destinations in Puerto Rico – and the entire Caribbean – for LGBTIQ+ travelers, San Juan is a warm-weather retreat with gay-friendly neighborhoods, accommodations, nightlife and restaurants. To keep things lively, a Queer Filmfest takes place in May, as well as an epic Pride celebration in June. And all of this is just a couple of hours by plane from most cities on the East Coast.

You and your partner can hit one of two unofficial gay beaches , then prepare for a big night out at one of the capital’s fun LGBTIQ+ bars, whether you’re catching a drag show at Kweens Klub or Zal Si Puedes , dancing up a storm at La Placita , downing cheap, strong drinks at Tía Maria’s Liquor Store or making new friends at La Sombrilla Rosa .

Looking to treat yourselves to a nice meal? Order broiled lobster and booze-filled coconut drinks at the gay-owned Ostra Cosa , or head to Jose Santaella’s gay-friendly namesake for beautiful contemporary Puerto Rican fare in an equally beautifully designed space.

As for accommodations, Coqui del Mar is an adults-only, gay-owned guesthouse in Ocean Park, with a clothing-optional pool and first-floor studios complete with two-person walk-in showers. You can also join group excursions to the rainforest and the beach. The all-vegetarian, gay-owned boutique Dreamcatcher is also in Ocean Park, while the adults-only Condado Ocean Club faces the sea in – you guessed it – Condado.

Long considered one of Europe’s most romantic cities, Prague is not only cheaper than many European getaways but also offers lovers a great spot to reconnect over a long weekend. Enjoy affordable luxury at Augustine Hotel —a former 13th-century monastery now owned by Marriott. Take in sights like the views from Petřín Park or the famed Charles Bridge. Stroll along Vltava river or take a cruise and wander through the medieval Old Town—and, of course, no visit is complete without hanging a padlock on Lovers’ Bridge. Many airlines fly nonstop to Prague.

For a meal that’s kind to the budget, try rustic Gold Rush-inspired Restaurant 1858 —with waterfall views. It’s no surprise that many of the area must-sees are outdoorsy or natural wonders, such as the magnificent Garden of the Gods red rock formations, Pikes Peak (which inspired the song “America the Beautiful”), and Seven Falls. Stop by the U.S. Air Force Academy for a tour and to see the stunning Cadet Chapel.

Must-visits during a quick trip include the former royal residence The Grand Palace , the iconic riverside Wat Arun Temple of Dawn (see it lit up at night to be really wowed), bar- and restaurant-packed Khao San Road, and the most sacred Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

forsyth park in savannah

This charming city is steeped in history. A weekend is just enough time to enjoy the thriving food scene , go for a long walk down the oak-lined Wormsloe Historic Site , or check out the historic downtown district on a horse-drawn carriage. For beach bums, nearby Tybee Island is ideal for a sunny day out. Amanda Williams recommends staying at quaint boutique hotels like the brick-lined River Street Inn or the modern Hotel Indigo . And don’t sleep on the plant-based fare at Fox & Fig .

San Francisco

the golden gate bridge during sunset in san francisco, california

While hardly synonymous with budget, there’s no denying that San Francisco is one of the most beautiful (not to mention romantic) cities in America. Luckily, it is possible to enjoy a weekend in the City by the Bay without breaking the bank: Stay just over the bridge in Marin County at waterfront The Gables Inn Sausalito . With rooms from $190, it provides stunning city views and offers a romance package, including a dozen red roses and a bottle of sparkling wine. Take a cable car around the city, soak up the views from the Presidio (and rediscover your inner kid at its Walt Disney Family Museum ), snap a 'Gram in front of the famous Painted Ladies townhouses, learn about chocolate-making and share a sundae at Ghirardelli , and end up in Chinatown for dinner at so-called Eataly of Chinatown food hall China Live .

the big ben in london and the house of parliament

Thanks to a myriad of cheap flight deals to London, it’s entirely possible to fly across the pond and enjoy a long weekend getaway. Stay at Z at Gloucester Place Hotel , which has rooms from around $100 per night, offers free wine and cheese, and is a short walk from the Baker St. and Marylebone tube stations. London is a wonderful walking city, making for a pleasant stroll through iconic neighborhoods like Chelsea, Mayfair, St. James, and Marylebone. Many of London’s best tourist sights are free, meanwhile, including the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, the Tate Modern, the British Museum, the National Gallery, and Hyde Park (perfect for an alfresco picnic).

Santa Barbara

santa barbara

With its miles of beaches, laid-back joie de vivre, and wine culture, it’s no wonder sun-soaked Santa Barbara is known as America’s Riviera. Check into the Cheshire Cat Inn —with rooms from about $250—a whimsical family-owned B&B with an Alice in Wonderland theme and walking distance from thoroughfare State Street. The city’s Funk Zone boasts more than 20 tasting rooms along the Urban Wine Trail (stop by Au Bon Climat and Margerum just up the road), as well as craft brews from spots like Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company . Harborview crab cakes and oysters at Brophy Bros followed by sunset at Montecito’s secluded Butterfly Beach are the perfect ways to cap off a day of romance.

charleston sc rainbow row

Packed with history—not to mention secret nooks and crannies, cobblestone streets, and Instagrammable backgrounds—romantic Charleston is the perfect city for strolling hand-in-hand. Stay at the elegant Planters Inn , in a building dating from 1844 and with a courtyard garden (rooms from $239). Use it as a jumping-off point to explore sights like opulent 19th-century townhouse Nathaniel Russell House , the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and its stained-glass windows, and the elegant Southern mansions in the landmark Historic District and overlooking The Battery (including Rainbow Row ). There’s also a robust military history, with Fort Sumter and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum , not to mention spooky ghost tours aplenty.

Niagara Falls

niagara sunrise

Make the trek up to New York’s iconic Niagara Falls and discover why the natural wonder was considered the honeymoon capital of the world. Stay at historic art deco boutique hotel The Giacomo , located only minutes from the waterfalls, with whirlpool baths and rooms from $136. The hotel is steps from Niagara Falls Culinary Institute , where couples can indulge their inner chefs together, with Oban Inn and special-occasion Revolving Dining Room at Skylon Tower popular for meals. The Maid of the Mist boat tour, visiting both American Falls and jaw-dropping Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, is a top attraction.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

old buildings and blue cobblestones in the streets of old san juan, puerto rico

The rich-in-history island has been slammed with natural disasters and—with tourism making up 10 percent of Puerto Rico’s GDP—is in need of tourism dollars as they continue rebuilding. As a result, San Juan could be an unexpected but wonderful couples’ escape. (Bonus: No passport necessary.) Check into the dreamy 18th-century boutique hotel The Gallery Inn in Old San Juan, with rates from $155 per night. Once settled, visit the 16th-century fort Viejo San Juan or 16th-century Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Take a peek at La Fortaleza, the walled compound where the governor lives, and don’t forget to visit San Juan Bautista cathedral, Puerto Rico’s oldest cathedral (and second oldest in the Americas.) Try Cafe El Punto for Puerto Rican and Creole food beloved by locals. While there, make sure to support local businesses, and consider volunteering with or donating to a group such as Para la Naturaleza .

Paso Robles, California

exploring the field of light at sensorio

Equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles in California’s Central Coast, the charming wine village of Paso Robles is home to some of America’s best wines—not to mention a fun retreat for couples. Itching for a romantic weekend getaway? While we fully believe that there's no better anniversary gift than one that will help you make memories together (though we wouldn't say no to some nice jewelry ), you don't have to save your vacation for a special occasion. Sometimes a quick couples trip can be just what the doctor ordered. You can head to the Southern US or an all-inclusive in the Caribbean for sunny, beach-friendly weather, the Northeast or West for some mind clearing mountain air, or even European capitals to see the highlights.

The first step is deciding what kind of couples vacation you’re craving: Do you plan on hunkering down in the sheets all weekend? Are you ready to hit the pavement and explore a new city through its museums and restaurants? Or are you looking for a relaxing babymoon destination where you can dig into a juicy new nonfiction book and wiggle your toes in some warm, powder-soft sand? We've compiled some of our favorite locations around the world—from affordable locales to high-end resorts for celebrating milestones—all of which will ignite the romance. So pack your best swimsuit (or puffer jacket ), hop on Expedia (their new ChatGPT tool makes even last-minute planning super easy), or grab a Booking.com promo code , and read on to find out which trip is perfect for you…and yours.

Dominican Republic

Courtesy of Eden Roc Cap Cana

Courtesy of Eden Roc Cap Cana

The Dominican Republic may be more well known for spring breaks than romantic weekend getaways, but that could be because you’ve never visited the eastern tip of the island, a paradise known as Cap Cana. Here you’ll find one of the Caribbean’s best marinas for fishing, miles of white-sand beaches for fun in the sun, and some of the country’s most glamorous and romantic hotels. Our pick in the area is Eden Roc Cap Cana , DR’s only Relais & Châteaux property that boasts a whopping 30,000 acres for true seclusion. Apart from elegant beachfront villa accommodations, there is also a brand-new spa and wellness program that includes many in-room services like couples massages and custom bath soaks. And those looking for the most unique romantic dinner should make sure to book a private meal at the boutique property’s on-site cenote, a limestone cave complete with a waterfall fountain. If you're looking for a more inexpensive option, Punta Cana has droves of lovely (and “affordable”) all-inclusives like The Majestic Elegance , which is on a stunning beach with crystal-clear water.

Save when you plan your couples getaway with these Booking.com promo codes .

Le Barthelemy

Courtesy of Le Barthelemy

The glamorous island in the French West Indies is known not only for its elegant hotels but its many peaceful white-sand beaches and romantic watering holes. We recommend a stay at Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa , a boutique oceanfront property that can arrange romantic excursions like a sunset cruise on a private yacht, custom couples massages in partnership with swank beauty line La Mer, and oversized suites complete with private plunge pools that call for a skinny dip.

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

Whether you've been with your SO for a few months and this is the first time you're traveling together or you're celebrating your 25th wedding anniversary, one of our favorite destinations for some serious fun is Nashville. The Music City has everything: bustling honky-tonks to blow off steam and boogie down (we're partial to the old-school vibes at Robert's Western World), incredible eats (we're still dreaming about the wood-fired edamame and Wagyu brisket at Noko and the slab bacon at Oak Steakhouse ), chic cocktail bars far from the main drag (we love Bastion ), and a vibrant arts scene. For a taste of all of the above, stay at The Bobby , where you'll have easy access to its concert series featuring local artists, a slick pool, and one of the most IG-worthy watering holes—its 1956 retrofitted Greyhound bus—and we're just talking about what's on the rooftop. The sleek boutique hotel, which just turned five, has a gallery, a sexy Garage Bar where you can leave your (literal) mark (the walls are adorned in neon graffiti), and some of the most comfortable beds in Tennessee. Though it's perfectly located steps from Printer's Alley and a quick walk from Broadway, you'll feel like you're in an oasis away from the fray if droves of bachelorette parties aren't your thing. And if you did spend most of your weekend mixing and mingling with the girls in the veils, the menu at Union Tavern offers plenty to help you soak up the whiskey. It's the type of eclectic place that'll make you feel like a rock star, which can be enough to shake up any couple's rut.

From the East Coast, you can fly to Puerto Rico in less time than most road trips, making it an appealing long-weekend destination during the winter months, but we love it in the summer too. Its capital, San Juan, is also one of our favorite cities for couples due to its mix of beautiful, historic buildings, and many charming, intimate restaurants. For an inexpensive hotel that is still suitably pampering for a romantic weekend, check in to the Condado Vanderbilt , located in the über-chic Condado district. The storied Spanish Revival property boasts amenities like pool and beach butlers, Puerto Rico’s only hammam, and two different oceanfront restaurants.

Antigua may not get as much attention as some other Lesser Antilles islands like St. Kitt’s or St. Lucia, but we think being a little more under the radar is what makes it one of the more romantic locales in the region. We’re huge fans of its gentle ocean breezes, peaceful white-sand beaches, and the vibrant coral reefs to explore by snorkel or scuba. And if you’re longing for a vacation during which you don’t have to plan a single thing, check out Curtain Bluff , an all-inclusive with—thankfully—delicious food and plenty of on-site bonding activities like snorkeling trips to Cades Reef or couples tennis lessons. And if your MO is simply to laze, your beach concierge can certainly help with that.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

About 168 miles north from Mexico City, the fairy-tale-like San Miguel de Allende is more than worth the three and a half-hour drive it takes to get there from the capital (or an hour and a half from the nearest airport in Léon, Guanajuato). The storied city, first established in the 16th century, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and makes for an idyllic long weekend escape. Chic overnight options abound in San Miguel de Allende, though, for a truly memorable experience that captures the historic charm, consider staying at Casa de Sierra de Nevada, a Belmond Hotel. Located in the heart of the city center, the property consists of six restored 17th- and 18th century Mexican mansions in a walkable cluster, each complete with vaulted archways, bougainvillea-shaded courtyards, and ornate, trickling fountains. Accommodations-wise, there are 23 suites and 14 rooms, each one uniquely decorated with antique furnishings and local artworks. The outdoor pool, ensconced in lush greenery, is certainly a highlight, but far from the only one. There’s plenty to love and enjoy when staying here, from the central location to the variety of food; the hotel is home to two restaurants (Andanza and Restaurante del Parque), plus the Sazón Cooking School and Tunki Rooftop by Handshake, a rooftop bar with arguably the best views and cocktails in town. (Stop by for a drink at sunset and thank us later.) Having a car in San Miguel de Allende isn’t needed, as nearly all the main attractions are walkable; the hotel is minutes away from the daily Market, the Parroquia church (a 17th-century gothic marvel), and the best churros in town at Chocolates y Churros San Agustín. A vibrant art scene thrives in San Miguel de Allende; La Fabricá la Aurora is a must-visit for discovering the local crafts.

If you're thinking of heading out west, it's well worth spending a few days in the Land of Enchantment. Fly into Albuquerque, then make your way north to Santa Fe, an hour and change drive to New Mexico's capital. Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Santa Fe is a popular destination for creatives and adventurers of all stripes, with a big local arts scene, unique pueblo-style adobe architecture, and tons of skiing, hiking, and mountain biking available throughout the year. For a weekend trip, stay at the charming Bishop's Lodge , which is located just outside the downtown area in Tesuque. It's the perfect place to appreciate the rich cultural history of New Mexico and reconnect with nature. Spend the morning swimming, horseback riding, or hiking around the property, then arrange for a pueblo tour for after lunch, followed by a massage in the spa. Book dinner at Sky Fire, which specializes in wood-fired dishes with local, seasonal ingredients. For a day trip, make time to visit Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiú, which is open for private and public tours throughout the year.

Miami is an understandably popular destination: sunny skies, sexy cocktail bars, and plenty of beaches. But not every hotel screams romance when music from the rooftop bar is pounding until 2 a.m. That’s why we’re huge fans of Surfside, a more peaceful and elegant enclave due north of the debauchery of South Beach. And one of our favorite hotels there is one you’ve probably seen on Instagram: The Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club . A veritable oasis in the middle of the buzzing city, it boasts oceanfront rooms, some of Miami’s best restaurants, and a historic lobby bar that is as sultry as they come. They offer plenty of ways to pamper your significant other, including private poolside cabanas for some surreptitious canoodling, and personalized cocktails from the cocktail trolley at The Champagne Bar. Pro tip: You can even ask for a custom picnic basket to set up a romantic dinner on the beach. The Setai is another perfect place if you're there more to soak up the sun than the tequila. The entire property is dimly lit to exude all the calm energy, and that's nothing compared to visiting the five-star Valmont spa (get the Luminosity of Ice facial, trust us). There are also three different pools all set at different temperatures so you can swim year-round, and there's private beach access, too. As for dining, the Setai's options are unmatched. We're partial to Jaya which has a selection of Asian-fusion dishes and evening entertainment like fire dancers and contortionists.

Cancún, Mexico

Cancún might not be the first place you think of for a relaxing family vacation, but there's no reason why it can't be—and one of the best places to unwind in the Yucatan peninsula is the Garza Blanca Resort & Spa , one of the area's most modern and luxurious all-inclusive resorts. Set on a palm tree-studded beach, it features not one, not two, but six pools between the rooftop and the ground level that are perfect for entertaining couples, friend groups, and families with young kids. As an all-inclusive resort, food and drink is the star of the show: There are multiple Mexican cuisine options (including a taco food trunk on the beach), a Japanese restaurant, a steakhouse, and Chinese fusion up on the roof. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the suite—or in the Gourmet Hall, which turns into a massive buffet each morning. For a slow wakeup or night in, there's of course room service, which is handled here by a dedicated floor butler who's available round-the-clock. Since the word “spa” is in the resort's name, you'd be remiss not to book a spa appointment, which offers massages and facials, as well as a signature hydrotherapy circuit. (Pro tip: Book an evening session and watch the sunset as you alternate between dips in the cold plunge bath and the heated jacuzzi.) A four-night stay would be ideal to enjoy a little bit of everything the resort has to offer (hi, morning yoga), though we wouldn't blame you for wanting to extend your trip by a few more days.

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

Aruba, known as One Happy Island, is one of our favorite Caribbean vacation spots not only for its world-famous beaches but for its relative affordability. It has plenty of hotels for couples, like the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino , which is a popular spot for engagements (hint-hint). The hotel even employs a sunset concierge, who can suggest the perfect romantic spot for popping the big question. And if you’re already married? Fun fact: Aruba is also known as a vow-renewal destination and the hotel can set up a whole renewal package, which includes a couples massage and a 30-minute photo shoot during sunset. If your idea of romance is singing your heart out, the downtown happens to have a very fun piano bar . Or while away the day at Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort's private flamingo island, which is excellent for photo ops.

Puerto Vallarta

Courtesy of Hilton Vallarta Riviera

Courtesy of Hilton Vallarta Riviera

Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico’s western coast, is fast becoming our favorite beach destination in the country. Not only are the shores of the Pacific Ocean spectacular, but many of the resorts in the area are comparatively inexpensive. One of the standout properties here is the Hilton Vallarta Riviera, which is perched between the Bahia de Banderas and the tropical forests near the Sierra Madre Mountains. And because every room here is outfitted with a private balcony, it’s a stellar hotel for a romantic escape. Or, for a hotel with history, stay at Casa Kimberly , the former home of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (you can also just stop by for a cocktail). Plus, the LGBTQ+-friendly downtown has an array of fun bars, restaurants, and cabarets (don't miss the Beyoncé impersonator ), as well as affordable places to stay. We love Pinnacle Suites which is relatively inexpensive, especially if you're traveling with another couple.

Courtesy of Hôtel de Crillon A Rosewood Hotel

We couldn’t write a romantic travel guide without including the City of Love, right? While we probably don’t need to sell you on Paris, we’ll give you a quick primer: Everything is beautiful. From the winding streets of Le Marais to the stunning art collections at Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre to the quiet elegance of the Seine River, it’s hard to turn a corner here without feeling amorous. And if you’re celebrating a special anniversary or just looking for a bit of a splurge trip, Hôtel de Crillon is jaw-droppingly romantic. Located in an iconic and historic building in the heart of the city at Place de La Concorde, the property is one of Paris’s grandes dames for good reason. For couples, indulgence is the key word here, from the bespoke treatments at Sense, a Rosewood Spa, to intimate private dinners at La Cave, to enormous suites, some of which were designed by Karl Lagerfeld. Don’t miss a meal at the brand-new restaurant, Nonos et Comestibles par Paul Pairet, helmed by one of France’s most acclaimed chefs. There's also the new Hôtel Dame des Arts in the Left Bank that features a beautiful rooftop bars with views for days. Celebrating a milestone anniversary? Also consider the Cheval Blanc Paris , which is, in a word très magnifique thanks to its stunning panoramic views of the Seine.

Wailea, Maui

Courtesy of Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateaux

You’re probably aware of the charms of the Hawaiian islands, and of Maui specifically, but we will direct you to our favorite part of the island: Wailea. With 1,500 acres of beaches and resorts and only 35 minutes from the Kahului Airport, it’s the idyllic spot for a romantic getaway. And no hotel in the area is better for couples than Hotel Wailea , an all-suite and—crucially—adults-only boutique property. For a once-in-a-lifetime dinner, book a meal in the hotel’s secluded treehouse, where couples can savor a seven-course meal while suspended among fragrant mango trees.

Mexico City

Courtesy of Ignacia Guest House

Mexico City is the most chameleon-like of cities, seemingly able to adapt to any sort of vacation, for any type of traveler. And with its charming, colorful streets, incredible yet inexpensive restaurants, plentiful mezcal, and temperate climate, it’s certainly top of mind for romantic weekend getaways. For a refuge that is both high-touch service but affordable, look into the charming Ignacia Guest House . With room for only 18 guests, it’s incredibly intimate, and it’s also filled with private terraces and fragrant gardens that can be the setting for clandestine kisses. Even better, it’s a proper bed-and-breakfast. Guests wake every morning to the smell of tortillas cooking on the griddle, and can sit down to a glass of orange juice freshly squeezed from the old-growth citrus trees on property.

New Orleans

Courtesy of International House Hotel

If romance to you means excellent food and drink, and live music, then consider New Orleans. One of our favorite boutique hotels is also one of the city’s most inexpensive. International House , located just a few blocks away from the French Quarter, is inside a beautiful Beaux Arts building that is also the city’s first boutique hotel. The hotel can arrange a private cocktail experience at its award-winning bar, loa, or even a private Vodou ceremony, which includes creating a lucky charm for the couple.

Santa Barbara

Courtesy of Mar Monte Hotel

While you can’t really say Prince Harry put Montecito and Santa Barbara on the map, we are finding ourselves more interested in the central California coast after he and Meghan Markle set up camp there a few years ago. Unfortunately, we can’t wrangle you a double date with the duo, but we can point you in the direction of one of Santa Barbara’s best hotels: Mar Monte . With three acres of Spanish-inspired grounds and a pool with oceanfront views, it’s the prime weekend getaway for romance. The hotel is also offering a special Mar Monte by Land and Sea package for the holiday, which includes a private flight, a three-hour wine tasting, and a private sunset charter on a yacht.

Courtesy of The Mayfair Townhouse

Courtesy of The Mayfair Townhouse

Elegant London, with its beautiful architecture, plentiful parks, and bountiful cultural activities (hello, West End), is one of our favorite cities for a romantic escape. And our preferred spot for a couples vacation is The Mayfair Townhouse , an intimate and stylish hotel that's primely located. Besides the attentive staff, we love the hotel’s on-site watering hole, The Dandy Bar, which is a great way to end a busy day of sightseeing (or begin the start of your evening). Couples looking for the utmost privacy and space should ask for the The Garden Suite, which comes with its own conservatory and patio. Or book a stay at the newly renovated, Dorchester in Mayfair which has an especially sexy site for sipping, the Vesper bar , which plays homage to James Bond.

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

Courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

Courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

There are few places we’ve visited that are imbued with a sense of calm like Palmetto Bluff, a secluded enclave of 20,000 acres in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. And with plenty of scenic walking paths, a stellar golf course, and tons of Southern-inflected restaurants, you won’t be bored, either. The area is also home to one of the state’s swankiest resorts: Montage Palmetto Bluff. A quick drive from either Savannah (another great couples escape) or Hilton Head, it’s ideal for a romantic getaway; on-site Spa Montage even has a whole section of the menu dedicated to couples. There you can indulge in everything from massages to the intriguingly named Lovers Jubilee, which includes an exfoliation, a soak, and a massage. And while we wouldn’t blame you if you were loath to leave your bed (they’re  very comfortable), make sure you grab dinner at River House, the hotel’s delicious ode to Lowcountry cuisine.

Chances are, when you think of a romantic Caribbean destination, you’re picturing something in the Bahamas. Known for its crystal-clear ocean water, and 16 major islands offering a wealth of outdoor activities, it’s an excellent locale for a romantic vacation that involves equal doses of downtime and heart-pounding adventure. The islands are home to a wide range of properties, but if you’re looking to truly wow your sweetheart, make a beeline for The Ocean Club . Famed for its sprawling, white-sand beach, couples can opt for mega-sized rooms like Villa Residences or a bungalow complete with an infinity plunge pool.

New York City

Whether it's for the country’s top hotels, restaurants, theater productions, or museums, a romantic trip to New York City is the place to wow your significant other. And if you can snag a hotel room with a view of Central Park, there is hardly a more iconic way to spend your vacation. For the ultimate in classic New York hospitality, grab a room at the storied Ritz-Carlton New York , Central Park. After its recent renovation, one of the city’s most elegant (and centrally located) properties is once again welcoming guests for romantic sojourns.

Georgetown, Washington, DC

Courtesy of Rosewood DC

Washington, DC’s Georgetown neighborhood, with its charming townhouses, excellent shopping, and superb restaurants, is one of the most vibrant areas in the entire city. And with the recent opening of Rosewood Washington, DC , and its unique Townhouse collection, now is a great time for a romantic escape. Couples who book one of these oversized accommodations are treated to a vacation in essentially a private home with room service on speed dial. There will also be a special Rosewood Romance package for the holiday, which includes Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries on arrival. For a truly romantic outing, head to Martin's Tavern where JFK proposed to Jackie O.

Known as the Caribbean’s “nature island,” Dominica may often be mistaken for its more famed neighbor, the Dominican Republic, but the names are really where the similarities end for these two islands. The unmatched beauty of Dominica’s landscape makes it one of the most soothing places to visit for a tropical vacation. And there is no hotel more romantic on the island than Secret Bay , whose all-villa room stock also makes it one of the most luxurious. Here couples can relax in their oversized bathtub for two or take a dip in their personal plunge pool followed by a relaxing hammock nap. And don’t look for menus at dinnertime: Your meals can be customized to your exact preferences. But if you’d rather not be bothered at all? Just stick the red flag outside your villa; the staff will make sure you get plenty of—ahem—alone time

Waikiki, Oahu

Courtesy of Wayfinder Waikiki

There may be nowhere more fun on Oahu than Waikiki. The south shore area of Honolulu is jam-packed with beautiful resorts, plenty of excellent shopping, and beautiful beaches with calm water. But finding a hotel in Waikiki that’s romantic, chic,  and inexpensive was pretty much impossible until the recent opening of the über-charming Wayfinder . Located right in the center of town, the midcentury modern boutique property has rooms at a very budget-friendly rate, along with poolside suites and quirky, colorful decor. Enjoy a romantic night on your room’s private lanai, or take advantage of the hotel’s location for a quick stroll on the nearby beach. Insider tip: The poolside speakeasy, Lost + Found, is opening soon for tasty, tropical-themed cocktails.

Hudson Valley, New York

Courtesy of Hudson Valley

We all know that the Hudson Valley is having a moment. And unlike some of the popular beach towns close to New York City, this bucolic area just a few hours north of the metropolis has plenty to offer year-round, from skiing in the winter to stunning hiking in the summer. But until this fall, it lacked a true destination-worthy property; the kind of place you splurge on for a special anniversary or romantic weekend away. That all changed with the opening of Wildflower Farms , a peaceful retreat set against the stunning backdrop of the Shawangunk Ridge. The rooms here are all freestanding cabins, which makes them perfect for an intimate couples vacation, but there’s plenty to do on site as well, from sumptuous spa Thistle and steamy outdoor hot tubs to stellar farm-to-table cuisine from on-site restaurant Clay. Or, if you're looking for a more urban escape, shack up in an Airbnb in the town of Hudson, where restaurants, bars, and shopping will all be in walking distance.

Asheville, North Carolina

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

This lush city in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains is as perfect for couples who like to take in nature (the hiking trails are next-level) as it is for those who prefer to…après-hike. There are as many scenic trails as there are breweries; plus, it has a bustling arts scene. Stay at the historic Omni Park Grove Inn to enjoy sweeping views of the stunning nature Asheville has to offer, or downtown for easy access to all the bars and restaurants—it's a totally walking-friendly city! If your love language is sharing a microbrew, it also has more than 40 fantastic breweries featuring great craft beer, and many offer live music and enough giant pretzels to help you soak up those IPAs.

Ios, Greece

Calio Resort in Ios Greece

While if you're traveling directly from the U.S. to Greece, this destination wouldn't exactly work for a weekend, but we'd be remiss if we didn't include a property that was quite literally built on love in this round-up. For a more laid-back holiday, the Greek island of Ios is known for its stunning remote beaches and archaeological sites. While you can find a vibrant party scene (nothing says romance quite like sharing a few cocktails on the sand and dancing till dawn), there are also ample places to relax. Situated in a mostly untapped area in what was once a hippie haven in the ’70s, the luxury resort Calilo was created with sustainability and privacy in mind. It offers 30 suites that are mindfully designed with features like heart-shaped plunge pools (hey, we said it was romantic), swim-up bars, and sumptuous daybeds. Each element of the property is infused with the love and creativity of the owners. a couple who have been operating Calio since 2019. If you’re lucky enough to catch an encounter with the Greek matriarch of the family-owned property, you might even get some sage words of marital wisdom (“Our philosophy? Create a life you can fall in love with”). This June the tranquil retreat will debut a three-story spa and wellness center and three additional state-of-the-art suites.

Charleston, South Carolina

Iconic row of colorful historic houses downtown Charleston SC.

For a destination that exudes Southern charm, has year-round lovely weather, and is the perfect city to while away the afternoon walking hand in hand on its famously beautiful streets, consider Charleston, where you can almost always snag affordable flights if you're coming from the East Coast. Stay the The Vendue , which is conveniently located near the harbor and the most picturesque Rainbow Row (guests can grab a free bike to help them explore). The hotel also happens to have one of the best rooftops in town to kick your feet up and take in a sunset and views of Charleston's iconic architecture.

(As of September 2022, the spa is closed for renovations, but will reopen in late 2022 or early 2023.) The property is also close to downtown Sedona, where you can get your fill of shopping between art galleries and funky boutiques.

Cape May, New Jersey

cape may beach ave

Cape May is perhaps the most charming of all of New Jersey's beach towns, thanks to the colorful Victorian-era houses that line its streets. Spend the day at the beach or peruse the shops of the Washington Street pedestrian mall, which is particularly festive in December. Congress Hall is the grande dame in this seaside resort town, and it's been hosting guests since 1816.

day trip ideas for couples near me

One of the best parts of being in a relationship is having a built-in travel buddy — and enjoying uninterrupted one-on-one time as you visit new places together. A trip with your significant other, whether domestic or international, almost always guarantees you'll learn something new about one another — perhaps your girlfriend gets a rush from cliff diving, or your boyfriend can make friends with anyone despite only being able to say one phrase in the local language.

When you're deciding where you want to go, consider which components of a romantic getaway matter most to you. Are you up for sightseeing and doing outdoorsy activities together or do you lean more toward enjoying quiet moments in intimate settings with a view?

For instance, couples looking for a chance to fully unwind might opt for a beach vacation or spa weekend in a beautiful destination, while those searching for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure may want to book an African safari. Foodie couples might want to eat their way through Paris's fine restaurants, while more active travelers may prefer to hit the slopes or go snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef.

Whatever your travel style, here are 25 of the best vacation spots for couples.

Bali, Indonesia

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

If your version of romance is hiking through monkey forests and rolling rice paddies — or dancing to DJ sets and light shows until the wee hours of the morning — head to Bali, a beautiful Indonesian isle known for its vibrant nightlife scene. Stroll hand-in-hand on white-sanded shores in the southern part of the island or by the volcanic black sand beaches of its northern and eastern coasts. In addition to historic temples and shrines, Bali is also home to heaps of high-end resorts, yoga classes, spas, and Australian-influenced cafes worth checking out during your trip.

Santorini, Greece

Monica Farber / Travel + Leisure

Visiting Santorini is like traveling to a cloud-like oasis that envelops you in an ethereal fantasy. In other words, there's no surprise as to why it's a popular choice among newlyweds looking for a picture-perfect honeymoon destination . The romance of the island pretty much sells itself; wandering the hilly, weathered streets, you'll be surrounded by bright white walls and blue roofs, while in the evenings, you'll have front-row seats to incredible sunsets. Once the sun is down, the island really lights up, with its houses, churches, and restaurants glowing like stars.

Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Ashour Rehana / Getty Images

Aside from traveling to Tanzania to hike Mount Kilimanjaro, many make the trip to see the country's incredible wildlife conservation sites and national parks. Going on a safari allows you and your significant other to share some unique firsts: the first time you see a lion, the first time you drive across the African plains, dotted with baobab trees, or the first time you meet someone from the local Indigenous community, to name a few.

You'll want to visit Ngorongoro Crater , the world's largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera. Its bowl-like shape makes a natural border for the animals, boosting the chances safari goers will be able to spot all of the Big Five — lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo — during a tour. Serengeti National Park is another popular safari destination because of the area's mass seasonal migrations of wildebeest and zebra, its large lion population, and the sheer diversity of habitats and animals you'll find here.

Tulum, Mexico

NurPhoto / Getty Images

Two core pillars of many romantic vacations are relaxing in intimate settings and enjoying exciting experiences, and Tulum has plenty of chances for you to do both. Rotate between lounging out on tropical beaches, snorkeling at nearby Xel-Ha Park , swimming in a natural sinkhole (or cenote), and touring ancient Mayan ruins, many of which are still intact. After a perfect day in Tulum , packed with leisure, adventure, or both, the cherry on top will be grabbing a drink at Gitano and relishing in its funky jungle atmosphere.

Whistler, Canada

A great way to bond as a couple is by getting active, and skiing on Whistler and Blackcomb mountains is great for both veteran and beginner skiers alike. Take on the mountains, offering numerous trails of varying intensity, enjoy an overhead view of the snow-capped trees from sprawling gondolas, break for lunch at the mid-mountain lodge, and top off your day with an après ski special at one of the slope-side bars. If one day of skiing leaves you with wobbly legs and your fill of downhill action, there's a lot more going on at the base of the peaks. Whistler Village is a lively, pedestrian-only hub of bars, shops, and restaurants. The little winter wonderland is as charming as the inside of a snow globe, and what's better for a romantic getaway than that?

Cappadocia, Turkey

UIG / Getty Images

For a fairytale vacation, there's nothing more fitting than a landscape dotted with "fairy chimneys," the tall, thin cones topping the many rock sites of Cappadocia. Cave churches, underground cities, and homes carved into the rocks work to create a whimsical aura usually reserved for the fictional realm. Floating high above the rocky terrain in a brightly-designed hot air balloon , you'll feel like characters wandering the pages of a Dr. Seuss book (or like astronauts discovering a civilization on the moon). Either way, the otherworldly experience will have you recapturing your sense of childlike wonder and awe together.

Paris, France

Most clichés became clichés for a reason, and so is the case with Paris' romantic reputation. Looking at pictures of couples in the City of Light, you can practically see the cartoon hearts in their eyes as they embrace in front of the Eiffel Tower. Paris and romance go together like Valentine's Day and chocolate, anniversary dinners and candlelit bistros, marriage proposals and world-famous landmarks… all of which Paris is not-so-coincidentally known for having.

Hakone, Japan

Zhang Yun / Getty Images

While not as romanticized for cherry-blossomed strolls as its neighbor, Kyoto, Hakone is a worthy day trip from Tokyo, offering an intimate escape from city travel in the most relaxing way possible: hot springs resorts . Aside from relaxing in onsen (hot springs) at a traditional ryokan (Japanese inn), you can take advantage of the natural sites, like Lake Ashi and the volcano Mount Fuji , or tour the fire-engine red Hakone Shrine and open-air sculpture museum . The many transportation options , ranging from boats and cable cars to rolling train routes through the mountains, also seem like mini adventures, making yours all the more memorable.

Northern Norway

AFP / Getty Images

If you've ever considered stargazing a romantic experience, northern Norway really ups the ante with its naturally occuring cosmic activity. The region covers about one-third of the country and is considered one of the best places to see the northern lights in Norway . They usually make an appearance from autumn to mid-April, while from late April to mid-August, the sun is still visible late at night thanks to a natural phenomenon known as the " midnight sun ."

Feeling adventurous? Venture even farther north to Svalbard, the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, to experience 24-hour daylight between April and August. On the opposite end of the light spectrum, Svalbard's January and February months have "polar nights," when night lasts for around 24 hours, making the aurora borealis particularly visible.

If you do decide to take this kind of trip together, be warned: Looking up at the stars in your own backyard might not be quite as impressive anymore.

Porto, Portugal

Paula Galindo Valle / Travel + Leisure

Porto is a waterfront merchant city that seemingly transports visitors to an earlier time with its cobblestoned streets, baroque churches, and prevalence of port factories and family-owned businesses. Nearby in the Duoro Valley , you can visit vineyards where wine has been produced for more than 2,000 years, sample it, and participate in harvesting practices such as stomping on the grapes. It's the perfect part of Portugal to spend a day or two , if not longer. In a city infused with the culture of wine making and drinking, you and your significant other can get tipsy on the energy alone.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Known for its natural and architectural beauty, Italy's Amalfi Coast is a prime choice for a romantic Mediterranean getaway. Travelers can bask in the natural scenery, hike through dreamy seaside villages with picturesque views, and visit famous sites such as the Grotta dello Smeraldo (the " Emerald Grotto "), as well as medieval churches, gardens, and museums. When you need some quiet time for just the two of you, there are a number of secluded hotels offering oceanfront views and luxurious amenities.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Filippo Bacci / Getty Images

In Argentina's bustling capital, you and your significant other will never run out of activities to try, with lots of live entertainment and a multitude of restaurants and bars. For a day-to-night date, La Boca is a vibrant neighborhood known for Tango dancing and El Caminito, a pedestrian walkway lined with houses and shops painted in bright primary colors — strolling through this vibrant neighborhood is one of our favorite things to do in Buenos Aires .

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

At the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, these 74 islands off the coast of Queensland, Australia, will have you sailing into uncharted relationship territory with unbelievable sites to discover together. Whitehaven Beach is one of the most popular white-sand beaches in the country — despite it being a tourist hotspot, you've got 4.3 miles to play with, making it easy to stretch out and find your own space.

In addition to enjoying blissful beach days, you can embark on some truly unforgettable and romantic excursions while visiting the islands, such as flying over Heart Reef in a helicopter, staying aboard a boat for a few days, or snorkeling at the legendary Great Barrier Reef.

South Caicos, Turks and Caicos

Design Pics / Helene Cyr / Getty Images

While Turks and Caicos is certainly not a new destination for romantic vacations, most visitors flock to Providenciales, the first major stopping point on the tropical archipelago.

Far less popular (and far more secluded) are the pristine beaches of South Caicos , just a short, scenic connecting flight away. If you're looking for something truly special — perhaps to celebrate an anniversary or another special occasion — Sailrock Resort is a luxury property nestled within natural brush along white-sand shores that lead into crystal-clear water. You'll experience the type of picturesque serenity you thought was only accessible to movie stars, yet there the two of you will be, sipping colorful cocktails together on a hammock at the beach's edge, with nothing but the open, beautiful horizon spanning ahead of you.

No matter how active you decide to be, Barbados is one of the best vacation spots for couples. The island's west coast is home to several high-end resorts with various offerings to make your Caribbean escape extra memorable. Arrange some classic island excursions, such as snorkeling, private boat trips with companies such as Seaduced , or visits to local attractions like the spectacular Hunte's Gardens and Rihanna's childhood home.

For a dose of local cuisine and culture, spend an upbeat Friday night at Oistins fish fry or sample some of the island's best rums on a tour of the Mount Gay rum distillery . You could also kick back and make relaxation your number-one priority by simply enjoying the beautiful beaches and temperate water. For a dinner you won't soon forget, head to The Cliff , which overlooks the water in a sultry, fire-adorned setting.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

For the ultimate romantic vacation, charter a boat and sail along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia. If you start your journey in Dubrovnik and end up in Split, you'll get a comprehensive look at the country, from nautical exploration to sightseeing in both small seaport towns and big cities. With a stopover in a new place every night, the transit is part of the fun, rather than merely a means to get from point A to point B.

Travelers mainly book Turkish gulets (or small yachts) with separate quarters for the crew. Companies like Gulet Yacht Adriatic Holiday offer packages that include the services of a captain, chef, and one or two crew members to help curate not just your route, but everything else you do while you're on the water or shore. While the busy season is typically from June through early September, trips also set out in October and make a great option if you want a bit more quiet and privacy on the Adriatic Sea.

Cotswolds, England

Gavin Guan / Getty Images

Step into a romantic period piece on a vacation in the Cotswolds , located in the picturesque English countryside. The rolling hills and fields are dotted with the most quaint towns you'll ever find — popular stops include Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Castle Combe. Grab a pint in a storied pub or tea in a cute cafe after spending the day exploring town after adorable town.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jay Yuan / Getty Images

What could be more romantic than snuggling up by the fire after a day out in the snow? In Jackson Hole , you can enjoy winter sports in a stunning setting just a short distance from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks . Plus, you can book a stay at a luxurious property like Amangani or the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole for a truly romantic trip — or the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort if you're both skiing or snowboarding enthusiasts.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is often a favorite city among Travel + Leisure readers , and once you visit, it's easy to see why. Dine at delicious restaurants, take a sunset cruise in the harbor (where you may even spot a dolphin or two), and visit one of the nearby beaches. For romantic accommodations, we recommend staying outside the city on Kiawah Island, a little under an hour's drive away, where you'll find The Sanctuary , a beachfront luxury hotel.

Tucson, Scottsdale, and Sedona, Arizona

Looking for a mindful way to connect with your partner? Consider booking a trip to a wellness resort with a spa and classes to deepen your relationship. Miraval Arizona , located in Tucson, has an all-inclusive experience that throws in fitness classes, health and wellness lectures, and spa treatments, among other amenities. The Civana Wellness Resort & Spa near Scottsdale offers a serene escape amid the Sonoran Desert, while Sedona, with its red rocks and mysterious vortexes, is another popular destination among wellness travelers.

Kauai, Hawaii

Mark Wilson / Getty Images

Find paradise together on a trip to Kauai , Hawaii's Garden Isle. You'll find the best of both worlds, with a beautiful mix of lush jungle landscapes and beautiful beaches. Spend your days alternating between lounging or strolling hand-and-hand along the shores and exploring its natural wonders by foot, boat, or helicopter. Popular romantic resort options include Timbers Kauai in Lihue and Koʻa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach.

Napa Valley, California

Akshat Mehta / EyeEm / Getty Images

A romantic jaunt to California's wine country might be the perfect getaway for couples looking for delicious vino, beautiful views, and world-class dining. Spend a few days touring vineyards together and tasting different varietals while gazing out at the rolling, vine-covered hills. You can also opt for a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train for more scenic views. Retire to one of the many beautiful luxury resorts in the area, such as the Auberge du Soleil , Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley , or Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection .

Sea Island, Georgia

This Georgia barrier island resort offers secluded, five-star luxury across several styles of accommodations, including The Cloister, located in the heart of the resort, as well as private cottages. In addition to the beach, guests can golf, lounge by the pools, enjoy spa treatments, and participate in other activities like tennis and horseback riding.

New York City

For some couples, taking on a major metropolis is just as romantic as spending a week by the beach. And when it comes to big city destinations in the United States, it's hard to beat New York City . Every night is date night on vacation, so go to dinner and take in a Broadway show, enjoy extended evening hours at some of the world's best museums, visit acclaimed restaurants and cocktail bars, and stroll through Central Park to soak in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.

Palm Springs, California

Escape to the desert with a trip to Palm Springs, surrounded by picturesque mountains and lined with palm trees. Plan your visit in the spring, fall, or winter to avoid the intense summer heat, and admire mid-century modern architecture as you hit the links or head to the spa. The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage is a luxe pick for a pool with a view, while the Parker Palm Springs is another trendy choice.
