Vegas is golden again, beating Stars 6-1 with 6 goal scorers

By stephen hawkins - the associated press • published december 9, 2023 • updated on december 9, 2023 at 10:35 pm.

The Vegas Golden Knights got another win when traveling with their dads, and plenty of them got to see their sons score.

Six Vegas players scored goals and six others had points to help the Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights wrap up their season series against the Dallas Stars with a 6-1 victory Saturday.

“It's pretty cool obviously, all the dads are here,” said Paul Cotter, who goal was his first in 18 games since Oct. 30. “When you get lucky enough to to get one while he’s in the building, it’s pretty cool. So maybe we ought to start bringing these guys here a lot more often. ”

Cotter joined captain Mark Stone, Zach Whitecloud and Nicholas Roy and Paul Cotter in having a goal and an assist. The Golden Knights began their annual dads’ trip with a 6-3 win in St. Louis on Wednesday night, and are 9-0-1 in such games.

Vegas, at 18-5-5 just past one-third of the way through the regular season, has an NHL-high 41 points. Dallas has 15 wins and 33 points in its 26 games, with three regulation losses in its last four games since an 8-1 victory over Tampa Bay a week earlier.

“There's a lot to like,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Our checking game was terrific. We didn’t allow them a lot of time and space. ... We wanted to get the right start, and we did.”

Cassidy also acknowledged the fortunate scheduling, with Vegas coming off two days off spent in Dallas. The Stars had played three road games in four nights before a day off Friday.

“It's a tough scheduled game. So I think knowing that, you have to do a few things, you have to be the smarter team, you have to defend well, you have to try and get the lead,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “We didn’t do any of those things. We were soft around our net. We didn’t help Jake out."

Logan Thompson had 19 saves for Vegas, while Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger stopped 20 of 26 shots.

Pavel Dorofeyev also scored for Vegas.

Chandler Stephenson put Vegas ahead to stay just 2 1/2 minutes into the game on his third goal of the season, a short backhander after a blocked shot. That came not long after Stephenson had a short snap shot knocked away by Oettinger.

Whitecloud made it 2-0 with a wrister from the top of the left circle after some nifty puck movement, with William Carrier taking a pass from Roy and then dropping it to the trailing Whitecloud.

The previous four regular-season games between the Knights and Stars, going back to last season, had all gone beyond regulation. Las Vegas won a shootout at home Oct. 17 in the second game of this season and won in overtime in Dallas on Nov. 22. Plus, three of the six games in their Western Conference Final last May went to overtime.

This time, the Knights led 3-1 after the first period on Stone's eighth goal, which he got after his initial shot ricocheted off a defender's skate right back to him.

Evgenii Dadanov got the lone Dallas goal midway through the first period, knocking in a ricochet after Thompson knocked down Stars captain Jamie Benn's shot with his glove without being able to control the puck.

Golden Knights: Play the first of four consecutive home games, against San Jose on Sunday.

Stars: Host Detroit on Monday night in the second of three home games in a row.

A road trip to Vegas with their dads just what the Dallas Stars needed to break out of early funk

dallas stars dads trip

The Dallas Stars might have found a cure for the Vegas Flu. While the rest of the teams in the league have slogged through their inaugural road trips to Sin City, the Stars aligned their Las Vegas visit with their annual dad's trip. Last week, 29 fathers, fathers-in-laws and brothers snapped selfies on the team plane and crammed together around the table for steak dinners as the Stars enjoyed themselves in Vegas and cruised to a 3-0 win. "It was smart," said veteran forward Jason Spezza . "Get the dads in trouble out there, instead of us."

When the Stars -- and their extended crew -- rolled into Chicago the next day, the mood was still light. After a morning skate, Ben Bishop Jr., hovered next to his son's locker stall as the former conducted an interview (the Stars goaltender is technically Ben Bishop III). Across the room, Tyler Seguin grinned as he shimmied out of his pads so he could scoot out and spend some time with his dad, Paul. "We've been playing crappy on the road at times," Seguin said, noting the team's 3-8-1 away record before the Vegas visit. "Because I think we talk about it so much and we forget to just play like we do at home. But this team is going to be OK."

Nine hours later, the Stars beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 in overtime to return home with a sweep. A cynic might call this a small sample size or surmise that maybe the Stars put on a show for their guests. But there was a sense in the Dallas dressing room that this was something different.

This road trip to Vegas & Chicago is the Stars annual Dad's Trip. Spezza says the timing is perfect with the road struggles the team has had pic.twitter.com/ZT7guLSK2t — Dallas Stars (@DallasStars) November 27, 2017

"We are turning things around," Spezza said. Look at the Stars now -- they've won seven of their last nine while averaging 3.8 goals per game. And, despite a 5-2 loss to the Nashville Predators on Tuesday, they still have a plus-11 goal differential during that span.

The Stars were the league's trendiest sleeper pick entering the season. Dallas finished 2016-17 with the second-worst record in franchise history, missing the playoffs by 15 points. Then came a splashy summer: Dallas signed Bishop as its No. 1 goalie and also landed free-agent forwards Martin Hanzal and Alexander Radulov and traded for defenseman Marc Methot .

Plus, Ken Hitchcock -- the future Hall of Fame coach who led the Stars to their only Stanley Cup, in 1999 -- came back on board in April. Hitchcock, who was fired by the St. Louis Blues on Feb. 1, has a reputation as a defense-first guy who runs a tight ship, and his teams always improve in the first year. With the Blackhawks likely to regress and the the Blues riddled with injuries, the Central Division figured to be wide open.

That's why the Stars' pedestrian start felt like a complete letdown. Dallas had slowed things down at even strength. At Thanksgiving, the Stars led the league with the fewest shots allowed per game (29.3), but were only firing 31.5 per game themselves. Some began to question whether Hitchcock, a coach known for his tight defensive style, was the right fit for a team whose best assets were a pair of elite goal scorers in Seguin and Jamie Benn .

What's more: Hitchcock was still fiddling with his line combinations at the season's quarter mark. "We listen to everyone's comments on what line combinations [should be]," Hitchcock said in Chicago. "We throw it into a blender, and whatever pops out, that's how we cook it. It's a good mix for Christmastime."

The coach was being facetious, but he wasn't totally kidding about seeing a need to mix things up and spread out his scoring. Hitchcock moved Seguin -- the fifth-leading scorer in the NHL since he joined the Stars in 2013 -- off the top line, where he had been paired with Benn and Alexander Radulov , and gave the 25-year-old center his own line. But without a playmaking winger alongside him, Seguin's goal scoring began to suffer. So Hitchcock continued to tinker, sometimes even switching lines during games. After Hanzal went on injured reserve with hamstring issues, Hitchcock shuffled things some more.

"This is what happens when you get a whole new coaching staff and all these new players," Seguin said. "You kind of tinker with it, and find a way to jell, and figure out how we can put the best team on the ice and get the chemistry we want."

The Stars are still adapting to Hitchcock's system -- and preaching patience. "It's not that difficult," Spezza said. "It just takes time. It takes repetition. You learn what the coach likes in certain situations, and you just need time to let it sink in, that's all. The thing is, we've all bought in."

Hitchcock, as he typically does, is asking a lot of everyone. Spezza, for example, is playing more wing than he's ever played in his career. "I struggled with it early," the 34-year-old said. "But I've played better in the last month or so as I've gotten comfortable with it."

Bishop is being asked to live up to hefty expectations for the first time in his career. He stumbled early but has played much better lately. Before Tuesday's loss to Nashville, Bishop had won six of his past seven starts and looked outstanding while doing so, boasting a .938 save percentage with two shutouts in that span. "Personally, I feel comfortable," he said. "I like the way I'm playing right now."

And Seguin, perhaps, has been asked to do the most. Once seen as a one-dimensional sniper, Hitchcock has asked him to double down on defense and play both ends of the ice. "He talks about being offensive-minded, and ... holding on to the puck a little bit more," Seguin said. "But we've also talked about being more defensive and that's also going to make me a better defensive player."

The Stars star has found a rapport with his 65-year-old coach. "I think my favorite thing about [Hitchcock] is that he's straightforward," Sequin said. "I like how there's not much gray [area] with him. It's really black and white. You might get a lot of information at times, but it's very cut and dried."

Right now, it's not cut and dried in the Central Division. The Stars are a fringe playoff team. But they figured out an antidote to the Vegas Flu, so perhaps they can find a way to shake their other early aches and pains, too.

Far from home: How the dads on the Dallas Stars navigate life away from family

Alexander Radulov spends close to 30 minutes each morning video-chatting with his soon-to-be five-year-old Makar.

Corey Perry ’s soon-to-be three-year-old son, Griffin, told him to say hello to Dallas Stars mascot Victor E. Green. Over FaceTime, he frequently shows his dad his “new trucks,” even though the toys really aren’t new.

Andrej Sekera has conversations with two-and-half-year-old Marko back in Slovakia, conversations that typically last until Marko realizes he can go to the playground.

Blake Comeau said goodbye to his three daughters on Sunday morning – six-year-old Zoie, four-year-old Fin and 18-month-old Rowan – before boarding the Stars’ charter flight from Love Field to Alberta.

Travel is part of the gig as a professional hockey player; time spent away from the family isn’t a new thing. But as Comeau recently tried to explain to a six-year-old, this absence from dad isn’t going to be normal.

“We’ve talked to them about it,” Comeau said. “But that type of time away, that’s not really something that I think they can understand yet. It’s not something I really understand. This is new for everyone.”

Andrew Cogliano , Justin Dowling, Taylor Fedun, Joe Pavelski and Ben Bishop are also fathers, which means nine Stars players are adjusting to this reality. Video coach Kelly Forbes also has young children, while interim coach Rick Bowness and assistant coach Derek Laxdal are both grandfathers.

The NHL can provide distractions in the bubble – golf is always popular, while the Stars’ charter was loaded with game systems and monitors. But no amount of distraction can make up for the amount of time spent away from one’s children, which on the Stars range from nine-year-old Nathan Pavelski to a trio of newborns.

“Thank God for FaceTime,” is a direct quote I could attribute to six different players interviewed for this story.

For Dowling and Fedun, the development comes at the start of their children’s lives: Both had infants born during the stoppage. For them, the time spent away family started in the last week of June upon returning to Texas for Phase 2.

“I’m not gonna lie; it’s hard, really hard,” Fedun said. “He’s a couple months old, so it’s not like he can understand me. But I think he’s starting to at least recognizing my voice on FaceTime.”

Fedun’s son, Bowden, was born on April 23. Prior to leaving, Fedun, his wife and son were able to spend nine weeks together as a family. At a minimum, Fedun will spend 10 weeks away in Edmonton, a number that could grow considerably longer if the Stars make a deep playoff run.

Dowling’s daughter, Perri, was born on March 21. He left Perri and his wife, Meg, in Alberta on June 27. On June 28, the youngest Dowling laughed for the first time.

“We’ve been talking on FaceTime every day, but that’s clearly not the same thing,” Dowling said. “The other day, it really hit me. My mom was holding her, and she looked double the size I remember from the last time I held her. That’s a moment where it kind of punches you in the gut, and you think about how much longer you’re going to be away.”

Bishop’s second son, James, was born on June 13. The goalie, who also has a two-year-old, Benjamin, said he was doing his part to do more for his wife, Andrea, and spending as much time as possible with his sons after training camp sessions in Frisco.

Dowling said the Stars have a network of dads, which makes it easier to handle the mental battle of being away from your children. Cogliano has a 1-year-old, Lottie, and his wife, Allie, is pregnant with the couple’s second child. Dowling would have dinner at Cogliano’s house during Phases 2 and 3 of the return to play. It became a space where they could talk about family life.

Finding distractions can also help. Dowling has started studying sports management and will continue that coursework in the bubble. Fedun has recently taken an interest in Formula 1 and has been studying how the engines work, in addition to reading about American history. Others, like Pavelski and Perry, have turned to golf, which will also be used as a distraction in Alberta.

Adjustment to bubble life could be a bit easier for Radulov as a father. Makar spends most of his time back in Russia with his mother and Radulov’s parents, so the early-morning video chats were already part of his daily routine. When Radulov wakes up, one of the first things he does is call Makar.

“You get used to it,” Radulov said.

Makar is at an age where the conversations can center more on hockey – not dad’s, but the younger Radulov, who now skates “three or four times” a week in Russia.

“He kind of knows what’s hockey, but you know how the little kids are, they can’t focus all the time,” Radulov said. “So he’ll see that, like, daddy plays, but that’s it. Then he’ll go do something else.”

The Stars are going into the bubble to win the Stanley Cup, but there’s also an added incentive for the dads on the team if Dallas reached the conference finals. At that point, the NHL has said families will be allowed into the bubble, something that Bishop helped argue for in NHLPA meetings and would alleviate the thought of potentially being away from family for more than three months.

“We don’t know if that’s something we’ll do or not,” Bishop said. “But to know that’s an option, that’s something that was important to us as we had these conversations as a team about what we wanted with a large group with families.”

It’s just another part of the mental grind when it comes to trying to win the Stanley Cup in 2020. It’s one nobody hopes to repeat again.

DALLAS (AP) — Vegas captain Mark Stone, Zach Whitecloud, Nicholas Roy and Paul Cotter each had a goal and an assist and the Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights wrapped up their season series against the Dallas Stars with a 6-1 victory Saturday.

The Golden Knights, at 18-5-5 just past one-third of the way through their regular-season schedule, have an NHL-high 41 points. Dallas is 15-8-3 for 33 points. It has three regulation losses in its last four games, and won a shootout in the other, since an 8-1 victory over Tampa Bay a week earlier.

Logan Thompson had 19 saves for Vegas, which had six goal scorers. Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger stopped 20 of 26 shots.

Chandler Stephenson put Vegas ahead to stay just 2 1/2 minutes into the game on his third goal of the season, a short backhander after Whitecloud’s shot got blocked by teammate Brett Howden in front of the net.

This time, the Knights led 3-1 after the first period on Stone’s eighth goal, which he got after his initial shot ricocheted off a defender’s skate right back to him. Roy got his goal in the second period, while Pavel Dorofeyev and Cotter scored in the third.

Evgenii Dadanov got the lone Dallas goal midway through the first period, knocking in a ricochet after Thompson knocked down Stars captain Jamie Benn’s shot with his glove without being able to control the puck.

The Golden Knights wrapped up their annual dads’ trip, which began with a 6-3 win in St. Louis on Wednesday night. They are 9-0-1 when accompanied on trips by their dads.

Stars center Roope Hintz, who scored twice in the third period Thursday at Washington after six games without a goal, was out because of illness. Vegas forward Michael Amadio missed the game for personal reasons.

Stars shatter franchise-best win streak in blowout of Oilers

T he Dallas Stars continue to play their best hockey of the season at the perfect time. Fresh off blanking the Edmonton Oilers 5-0 on Wednesday night, the squad has won eight games in a row to vault into first-place in the Western Conference.

That’s a franchise record ; no Stars team has ever won more than seven consecutive contests, dating back to when the team moved from Minnesota back in 1993-94. In the waning weeks of 2023-24, that is no longer the case .

“There’s been a lot of great teams in this organization over the years, so to have the longest win streak is pretty cool,” star goaltender Jake Oettinger said after shutting out Connor McDavid and his Oilers, per The Associated Press. “And hopefully we can grow that as much as we can.”

With just two weeks left in the regular-season, the Stars are the Western Conference frontrunners and just one point back of the New York Rangers in the President’s Trophy race. At 48-19-9 and without a defeat since March 15, is this the team to beat in a stacked conference?

The question must be asked, especially as the Stars have six games left on the schedule — with four against non-playoff opponents. Clearly, this team has as good a chance as any to finish at the top of the table. That’s even more true after a seriously convincing win over the Oil.

Stars looking to return to Stanley Cup Final for 2nd time in 5 years

Dallas is looking well-positioned to make a deep run in the West, especially if they can win the conference and secure home-ice advantage for at least the first three rounds.

Back in 2020, the Stars marched all the way to the Stanley Cup Final — their first since winning it all in 1999 — before bowing out to the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

The Bolts would go on to play in the next two SCF’s, winning two of them, while the Stars haven’t returned since. They did make it to last postseason’s Western Conference Final, losing to the eventual champion Vegas Golden Knights in six games.

But four years later, there’s belief in Texas that this team can return to the peak of the sport.

“Absolutely a lot of credit to Dallas Stars. They’re playing really good hockey, they are a really good team,” said Oilers bench boss Kris Knoblauch, per AP.

“Coming here was a challenge for us and we came up short. I thought it was a good test to see how good we are, and we still have some work do to to catch up to them.”

Jason Robertson, Wyatt Johnston also make franchise history

Jason Robertson has been excellent for Dallas after a relatively slow start to the season, while Wyatt Johnston has looked electric throughout his sophomore NHL campaign.

Robertson is up to 77 points in 76 games, while Johnston has already scored 30 goals — and 61 points — in the same span. And both players accomplished impressive franchise feats in Wednesday’s blowout win.

“Jason Robertson (0-1—1) and Wyatt Johnston (1-1—2) each hit season milestones to help the Stars establish a franchise-record  eight-game winning streak and maintain a three-point lead atop the Western Conference standings,” stated NHL Public Relations.

“Johnston scored his 30th tally of 2023-24 and joined Brian Bellows (35 in 1982-83 & 41 in 1983-84) as the second player in Stars/North Stars history to record a 30-goal season prior to their 21st birthday.

“Robertson notched his second consecutive 50-assist season and became just the sixth player in franchise history to accomplish the feat, joining Bobby Smith (4 from 1979-80 – 1982-83), Dennis Hextall (3 from 1972-73 – 1974-75), Mike Ribeiro (2 from 2007-08 – 2008-09), Neal Broten (2 from 1989-90 – 1990-91) and Craig Hartsburg (2 from 1981-82 – 1982-83).”

Certainly impressive company for both players, who continue to make up one of the league’s most prolific offenses in 2023-24.

The Stars will complete their final two road games of the regular-season this week; they’ll head to Chicago to play the Blackhawks on Saturday before making a trip to the Mile High City to play Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche the next night.

Knights get rare luxury ahead of playoff rematch in Dallas

The Golden Knights got in a rare practice Friday ahead of their Saturday afternoon game against the Dallas Stars, a Western Conference Final rematch.

Vegas Golden Knights' Nicolas Roy (10) looks to pass around St. Louis Blues' Marco Scandella (6 ...

The Golden Knights did something Friday their recent schedule hasn’t allowed them to do much.

The team put in more than an hour on the ice one day before it plays the Dallas Stars at 1 p.m. Saturday at American Airlines Center. The Knights’ fathers even got to watch from the stands since they’re taking part in the club’s annual dads’ trip .

Coach Bruce Cassidy said he didn’t put his players through a full workout just because there were special guests in attendance. He was more concerned with getting a full day’s work in, even if it took him a second to recall the best way to do that.

“We haven’t had a practice in so long, I felt more pressure to remember what it’s like because we’ve had so few this year,” Cassidy said. “It was good to get back out.”

The Knights (17-5-5) have had a jam-packed schedule in recent weeks.

Saturday will be their 13th game in 25 days, a stretch that started Nov. 14 against Washington. Only three of those games have been at T-Mobile Arena.

The Knights at least got a brief break this week. Their last game was Wednesday’s 6-3 victory in St. Louis. The team then got Thursday off except for a short flight. That left the Knights time to practice Friday.

They also planned to tour the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas covering the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy and have one more group dinner to commemorate the dads’ trip.

“I think it’s just good downtime for the guys after the game in St. Louis and to not play,” Cassidy said. “We just haven’t had that type of break. You prefer to do it at home so they can be with their family, but it happens to be on the road and they get to be with their dads at least.”

The schedule also gives the Knights extra prep time for the Stars (15-7-3), though they may not need it.

The two teams have already played twice this year and met six times in last season’s Western Conference Final. The Knights also know Stars coach Pete DeBoer well after playing for him for two-and-a-half seasons.

“Even for us, as coaches, we get a little chance to recharge the batteries a little,” Cassidy said. “I don’t think they’ve changed a whole lot. They’re a pretty good hockey team. We just have to be the one that executes better.”

The Knights have been doing that lately on special teams.

They’ve scored a power-play goal in four straight games and in five of their last six. Their penalty kill is also 20-for-21 their last nine contests.

Both units played a key role in the Knights’ last victory. They scored twice on a franchise-record eight power plays against the Blues, while killing all three of their own penalties.

“Obviously our special teams were good,” Cassidy said. “They got in some penalty trouble and we were able to take advantage.”

Cassidy hopes the Knights can do so again Saturday. They’re 2-0 against Dallas this season, but both games were tied after regulation. The Knights won once in a shootout and once in overtime.

“It was two close games,” Cassidy said. “I’d expect more of the same. They’re coming off a tough trip, but they got a win (Thursday) so they’ll be in a good place.”

NHL predictions

With the large amount of games on tonight’s NHL schedule, it might be hard to know where to start. We at the Last Word on Hockey have helped narrow your focus to our best bets. This round of NHL Predictions will help condense the slate into three best bets and one prop bet of the night.

NHL Predictions

Buffalo sabres vs detroit red wings, head-to-head: sabres 2-1 red wings.

TV: Sportsnet 1; TNT; Max

Our opening game of NHL predictions is a must-win for both the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is the expected starter for the Sabres, who are 5-5 in the last 10. However, Buffalo has won two in a row to keep its Stanley Cup Playoff chances alive. Tage Thompson has 28 goals and 26 assists for the Sabres. German standout John-Jason Peterka has seven goals and three assists over the last 10 games. The Sabres are three points off the final wild card spot.

Alex Lyon is the confirmed starter for the Red Wings, who are a point off the last wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Detroit is 4-4-2 in the last 10 games and need to keep getting points to stay alive. Defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere has 10 goals and 40 assists for the Red Wings. Lucas Raymond has scored six goals with one assist over the last 10 games.

Both teams need a victory to stay alive. Detroit pretty much knocks out Buffalo with this one.

Prediction: Red Wings win 4-3.

Minnesota Wild vs Chicago Blackhawks

Head-to-head: wild 2-0 blackhawks.

TV: NBC Sports Chicago+; Bally Sports North; Bally Sports Wisconsin; ESPN+

It’s a Central Division matchup as the Minnesota Wild visit the Chicago Blackhawks. Minnesota is likely finishing out the string and will give Jesper Wallstedt a start. The Wild have a -13 scoring differential, with 228 total goals scored and 241 allowed. Kirill Kaprizov has 39 goals and 47 assists for the Wild. Marco Rossi has three goals and one assist over the past 10 games.

Chicago is expected to go with Arvid Soderblom in between the pipes for this one. However, always check social media before locking in a daily fantasy starter. The Blackhawks are coming off a surprising 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Philipp Kurashev has 16 goals and 36 assists for the Blackhawks. Connor Bedard has two goals and six assists over the last 10 games.

Minnesota will get a look to see what Wallstedt can do. The Wild pick up the win.

Prediction: Wild win 4-2.

Dallas Stars vs Colorado Avalanche

Head-to-head: stars 0-3 avalanche.

TV: ESPN; Sportsnet

Our final and featured game of NHL predictions has the Stars looking to stop the Colorado Avalanche. Dallas is coming off a puzzling loss to Chicago the day before. Jake Oettinger should get the call with Scott Wedgewood playing the day before against the Blackhawks. The Stars had their eight-game winning streak stopped and will want to start another one. Wyatt Johnston has 30 goals and 31 assists for the Stars. Jamie Benn has scored nine goals with four assists over the last 10 games.

Colorado is likely to go with Alexandar Georgiev in the blue paint for this game. The Avalanche are 6-3-1 in the last 10, but lost to the Edmonton Oilers last time out. The Avalanche have one of the best scoring differentials at +54. Hart Trophy candidate Nathan MacKinnon has 48 goals and 83 assists for the Avalanche. Mikko Rantanen has scored six goals with six assists over the last 10 games.

The Avalanche have surprisingly won all three meetings thus far. However, the Stars stay on top in the Central.

Prediction: Stars win 3-2.

Prop Bet of the Night

Let’s go back to our second game of the night for our preferred prop bet. Kaprizov has been playing well for Minnesota and we like the over on +1.0 points for him.

After already clinching their third straight playoff appearance , the Dallas Stars are skating full speed ahead toward the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Dallas is in pursuit of several key milestones: The Presidents’ Trophy awarded to the team with the best record in the NHL, the first seed in the Western Conference and first place in the Central Division.

Here’s a look at where the Stars are in the standings and who they would play in the first round if the playoffs began today.

How the NHL playoffs work

The top three teams in each of the four divisions will make up the first 12 teams in the playoffs.

The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season record and regardless of division.

In the first round, the division winner with the best record in each conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the lesser record. The wild card team with the better record will play the other division winner.

The teams finishing second and third in each division will meet in the first round to round out the playoff field.

If the regular-season ended today, the Stars would face the Los Angeles Kings in the first round. The Stars currently hold the No. 1 spot in the Western Conference with 105 points, and the Kings occupy the last wild card spot with 91 points. Dallas would have home-ice advantage in the series.

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

  • Posted on April 14, 2018 July 26, 2018

dallas stars dads trip

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

dallas stars dads trip

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

dallas stars dads trip

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

dallas stars dads trip

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

dallas stars dads trip

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

This composite image of thirteen photographs shows the progression of a total solar eclipse

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
