What makes Copenhagen the world’s most bicycle friendly capital?

By James Thoem, Copenhagenize

Copenhagen ranks as the world's best capital city for cycling and locals take pride in getting around on their two-wheeler. But is it something in our culture , is it in our DNA or is it maybe something quite different that makes half the Copenhageners chose the bike for their daily commute?

The morning rush hour along Copenhagen’s Dronning Louises Bro  is in many ways just like any other. A crowd of tired, blank faces yawning their way to work. There is of course a healthy dose of nordic-chic outfits, but otherwise there is little to no eye contact and scant conversation. Indeed, a rush hour like any other.

The remarkable difference here is that these under-caffeinated commuters are getting to work by bike, joining a city-wide chorus of hundreds of thousands of Copenhageners that rely on the simple bicycle as their vehicle of choice.

On any given workday more than 40,000 people cycle across Queen Louises Bridge

For those who are counting, Copenhageners cycle an estimated 1.44 million kilometres daily. 49% of all trips to work or school in Copenhagen are by bike, up from 35% just ten years ago. This recent rise in cycling over the past decade is a result of continued municipal investment. The City has pledged investments equalling more than €40 per capita in bicycle infrastructure investments. While this figure pales in comparison to public transport and private automobile infrastructure, it shows that cycling is taken seriously. And something seems to be working, 97% of Copenhageners are satisfied with the cycling conditions in the city. Of those that do cycle, three quarters continue to do so through the long, dark, nasty Danish winters.

But what is it about Copenhageners that makes them take to the bicycle every morning come rain, sleet, or snow? Is the average Copenhagener more eco-conscious than you? Hardly. Is it because they’re all a bunch of health freaks? Not a chance. Or maybe because the bicycle is just part of the Danish DNA? Nope. It comes down to three important factors: Infrastructure, infrastructure, and infrastructure. Copenhagen has demonstrated that with a network of simple , safe , and connected infrastructure, the bicycle can be a competitive mode of transportation for people of all ages and abilities.

Simple Infrastructure

Danish design is renowned for its focus on simplicity and function. Whether you’re talking dining room chairs, apartment buildings, or motorway bridges, Danish design at its best understands and accommodates the user and context. The same goes for bicycle infrastructure. Cycle through Copenhagen (and beyond) and you’ll notice that no matter the context, cycling is rather easy in its simplicity. Simpler yet, cycling infrastructure appears in four basic typologies: traffic calmed streets, painted bike lanes, separated cycle tracks, and green routes get you where you need to go. All without requiring a user manual.

On quieter, more residential streets, cycling is accommodated in a more subtle way. Rather than reserving a dedicated lane separating bicycle riders from cars, the two modes share the roadway. This, however, hinges on the requirement that cars drive no faster than 30 kilometres per hour, better yet, 20. To simply rely on signage stating the speed limit is naïve. To ensure that car drivers actually drive at a safe speed, you’ll notice how residential streets in Copenhagen have been treated with a variety of traffic calming measures. By narrowing lane widths, tightening corner radii, and using textured surfaces, motorists drive slowly, by design. It is only then, that car drivers and bicycle riders of all ages and abilities can ‘share the lane’ comfortably.

Narrowed lanes and planter boxes calm traffic by design.

Along busier neighbourhoods streets, you’ll notice bike lanes separated by a simple painted line. In certain situations, the painted bike lane can be an effective way to provide bicycle riders a dedicated space. You’ll notice that cars are expected to park in between the bike lane and car traffic, adding an extra level of protection between bicycle riders and cars. This, of course, relies on the motorists to obey the painted line, something that can’t always be counted on. For that, and many other reasons, the curb separated cycle track is more effective.

The cornerstone of this network is the curb separated cycle track. Separated from both car traffic and pedestrians with a simple curb, the cycle track provides all street users a simple and intuitive experience. A quick glance at a typical main street in Copenhagen, and each user knows exactly where they belong. Pedestrians on the sidewalk, bikes on the cycle track, and cars and busses on the roadway. You’ll also notice the symmetry of the street, with a one-way cycle track on either side of the street. No confusing weaving of bike lanes from roadway to sidewalk only to disappear for two blocks before reappearing again in a completely different form. Just straight and simple cycle tracks.

Nørrebrogade

Along Nørrebrogade wide cycle tracks accommodate tens of thousands of cyclists every day. Photo : Copenhagenize

Along busier, more trafficked streets outside of the city centre , the curb separation is strengthened by an extra gap between the cycle track and cars provides for a safer experience. These buffered cycle tracks go a step further in making sure the bicycle riders feel safe as they travel along the more uncomfortable streets.

And finally, the fourth typology of bicycle infrastructure you’ll see in Copenhagen is the off-street path. Running through parks or along waterfronts , railway lines, and highways, these off street paths provide recreational routes and help stitch together the network of on street bike lanes. The design of these off street greenways still maintains a separation between pedestrians and bicycle riders through different surface colours. Some, like the harbour ring, are better suited for recreational riders. While others, like the regionals ever expanding cycle highways, provide long stretches of comfortable and uninterrupted routes for commuters.

By sticking to these four simple typologies, everyday cycling in Copenhagen quickly becomes something that is intuitive and reliable. No need to readjust your riding style with each corridor, just simple cycling. Whatsmore, these simple typologies make cycling safer by design.

Safe Infrastructure

People of all ages cycle in Copenhagen not only because it’s safe, but because it feels safe . An average of 5.7 million kilometres are cycled between each serious accident. Last year, of the millions of cycle trips, there were 81 seriously injured cyclists reported, a number that has decreased by one third in the past decade. At the same time, perception of safety has improved as well. Polls show that more than three quarters of residents feel safe when cycling.

With a simple island, both bus passengers and cyclists can safely navigate an otherwise tricky situation.

Perception of safety is a fragile thing. If for just one block or one intersection it dips down, that may be the difference from someone choosing to leave the bike at home. To avoid this, streets in all neighbourhoods and all contexts must feel safe while cycling. The four typologies addressed above go a long way in ensuring safety. But look to the intersections to see how design can make cycling safer. Intersections small and large are vulnerable places for cyclists, as they come to a cross with faster, heavier vehicles.

Walk or cycle along one of the city’s high streets, and you may notice that the crossings at intersecting quieter residential streets are different. Or you may not notice, and that’s the point. In these cases, intersections are designed to prioritize the more vulnerable road users, pedestrians and cyclists, over cars and trucks. By continuing sidewalks and cycle tracks at a consistent level, the design requires cars to slow down before entering the intersection, rather than having pedestrians look both ways, yield, and step down into the street at every block. And in doing so these intersections act almost as a line of defence for residential neighbourhoods, forcing cars to slow.

At busier intersections a different set of design details make cycling safer. One of the most dangerous situations is the so-called right hook, where right turning cars, and especially trucks, collide with bicycle riders in their blind spot. A couple of features can help reduce these. You may notice that at many intersections, bicycle riders, like cars and pedestrians, have their own dedicated traffic signals shining red, yellow (or amber, for those traffic nerds), and green. While the bicycle signals generally run in sync with the others, they are often afforded a couple seconds head start before the cars. This simple detail gets bicycle riders into the intersection first and out of the blind spots of cars and trucks. To further protect bicycle riders from a right-hook collision, many busier intersections feature a set back stop-line for cars. The set back stop-line design has bicycle riders stopped a full five metres ahead of car drivers. And just as with the advance green signal, this design puts cyclists ahead, out of the blind spot of cars.

And one additional detail seen at busier intersections is the bicycle railing. This simple piece of street furniture is a clever way of both showing bicycle riders that they are appreciated while also making for more predictable interactions. With these railings placed at red lights, one can stay sitting comfortably on their bike seat while waiting for the signal to change. And once green, the railing serves as a starting block, allowing bicycle riders to push off with a boost of momentum. But it’s about more than just treating the users, there’s a valuable behavioural aspect of these railings too. The logic goes that when sitting comfortably at a red signal, a cyclist is less likely to become impatient and run a red light. And being positioned at the front of the queue, it’s even less likely that those behind them will opt to break the rules in front of someone patiently waiting. In doing so, the bicycle railings brilliantly treats the bicycle riders while making simultaneously intersections more predictable.

A combination of set back stop-lines, dedicated bicycle signals, and bicycle railings help improve the safety of intersections.

With continued investment over the past decades, Copenhagen has started to witness somewhat of a virtuous cycle. With safer infrastructure come more bicycle riders. And with more bicycle riders comes a safety in numbers effect associated increased awareness and visibility throughout the city. The simple and safe infrastructure is a great start, but to really tie the city together, cycling infrastructure must be connected.

Connected Infrastructure

Picture a city with four individual metro lines, each with only two stops, and all completely detached from one another. That would be pretty impractical. Any successful metro network must be connected, providing access to all corners of the city. The same goes for cycling infrastructure.

Connecting bicycle lanes along the existing street grid is one thing, but to further stitch the city together, larger gaps must be bridged. And as a city bisected by a harbour and smaller canals, there has been plenty of bridging to be done. Take the Quay Bridge (Bryggebroen) connecting Havneholmen to Islands Brygge for example. Completed in 2006, Bryggebroen was the first of many new connections built over the Copenhagen harbour in centuries. When first proposed, experts estimated 3,300 daily bicycle crossings over the bridge. But within months of opening more than 9,000 were counted crossing, of which one third were former car drivers. In other words, the existence of this strategically placed bridge has actually created cycling trips. And the latest numbers from 2018 show that with the adjoining Bicycle Snake (Cykelslangen), more than 20,000 cycle across the bridge daily.

Following the success of Bryggebroen, Copenhagen has seen something of a bridge building spree, building more than a dozen dedicated pedestrian and cyclist bridges. The views afforded from many of these bridges are something worth catching. Swooping down the Bicycle Snake (Cykelslangen), the bicycle rider is teased with a brief glimpse up the harbour. And from Olafur Eliasson’s spectacular Circle Bridge (Cirkelbroen) you can appreciate the National Library’s Black Diamond expansion in its intended glory, with glimmers of light bouncing off the facade. But it’s not all about the view. Other less glamorous bicycle crossings over motorways and railways are a reminder of the role of these crossings, to better connect the city for everyday commuters.

Return to Dronning Louises Bridge for the afternoon rush hour. You’ll witness a scene quite different from the morning. A scene nicely demonstrating one of the benefits of investing in simple, safe and connected cycling infrastructure. It’s not just cycling for cycling’s sake. It’s about making a healthy, sustainable, city where people, young and old, enjoy being out and about.

The tens of thousands of commuters that passed during the morning rush hour are now passing back. Only now the mood has completely changed. Some are cycling two abreast, chatting and laughing as they go. Others are slowly chugging along on their cargo bike with their kids up front. And along the sidewalk, people line the bridge, enjoying the late afternoon sun, having a drink, and just watching the evening pass by. Indeed, a rush hour unlike any other.

Five Spots to Witness Best Practice Bicycle Infrastructure

  • The Bicycle Snake (Cykelslangen) - Cycle from Vesterbro down the bicycle snake. Sit alongside the harbour and watch the never-ending stream of traffic crossing the harbour.
  • Sønder Boulevard - Grab a pizza and a drink to go and find a spot to enjoy it along the linear park on Sønder Boulevard. Here the roadway has been narrowed, reducing car speeds and making for a more welcoming green space.
  • Nørreport Station - Walk through the public square at Nørreport station and you’ll notice an innovative bike parking solution where the racks sit on lowered platforms. This simple trick gives a more open vista of the square.
  • Dronning Louises Bro  - Grab an early coffee and pastry and watch the morning rush hour at 08:30. Better yet, enjoy a drink with a friend in the sun in the late afternoon.
  • The Cycle Highway to Bagsværd - Follow the new regional cycle highway (Supercykelstier) route towards Farum. Hop off the highway at Bagsværd and visit architect Jørn Utzon’s church .

The Best Bike Tours in Copenhagen, Denmark

Many cities need help to build solid cycling infrastructures, but Copenhagen cracked the code a long time ago. Every year, the Danish capital vies with Amsterdam for the world’s most bike-friendly city. Copenhageners make 49% of trips to work or school on their bikes , and you’ll be taken aback by how many two-wheeled wonders are about in the city center.

Admittedly, navigating the Danish capital’s bike networks can feel daunting if you’re new to the city. But don’t worry; as long as you stick to the rules, cycling in Copenhagen is incredibly safe and a joyous experience.

If you’re only in Denmark’s largest city for a few days, you can always join a tour. Here are some of the best cycling tours in Copenhagen.

cycling tourist copenhagen

Forgotten Giants e-Bike Treasure Hunt

The Forgotten Giants are some of Denmark’s best-kept secrets. Throughout the country (and further afield), you’ll find several large mythical statues. In the Copenhagen region, you’ll find four Hidden Giants – and this treasure hunt is the perfect option to find them.

During the tour, you’ll get to ride an e-bike – which is much kinder on your legs than on an ordinary bicycle. You’ll receive a bottle of water, along with safety equipment. The tour takes place in English, Danish, Russian, and Arabic.

The tour begins outside Nordvestkirken, which is in the district of Bispebjerg. Note that this church is different from the famous Grundtvigs Kirke so that you don’t get the meeting point confused.

Complete Copenhagen City Tour

Copenhagen has plenty of hidden gems just outside the city. If you travel slightly further up the island of Sjælland, for example, you’ll find acres of beaches and the likes of Frederiksborg Castle. But even if you never leave the downtown area, you’ll find plenty of things to see and do.

This tour gives you a complete picture of Copenhagen, and you’ll also see some of the lesser-visited parts of the city. For example, you’ll cycle across the architectural marvel known as Cykelslangen – a bridge designed exclusively for bicycles. You’ll also pass some of the city’s diverse architecture, such as the newly-built Kaktus Towers.

Of course, you’ll also get to see many of the main sights in the inner city. For example, you’ll get to see Amalienborg Palace – which is Denmark’s answer to Buckingham Palace.

Rent Your Own Bike

Although you’ll find plenty of bike tours in Copenhagen, arguably the best way to explore the Danish capital is by allowing yourself to wander aimlessly. The vast majority of streets have well-maintained bicycle paths, making it easy to get around (be careful in Frederiksberg, though, as some bike lanes are among the traffic).

If you want to explore Copenhagen by bike, you have several options. Many hotels in the city offer bike rentals for guests, with two examples being Scandic Kødbyen and WakeUp Borgergade .

Throughout the city, you’ll also notice several bright orange Donkey Republic bikes. You can rent these via the app and drop them off at numerous points in Copenhagen; how much you pay depends on the amount of time you ride the bike for.

Copenhagen also has numerous bicycle rental stores that let you borrow bikes for an affordable price. You can use the white Bycyklen bikes, too, but be warned – you’ll out yourself as a tourist because most locals don’t use these.

A Bicycle Adventure in Copenhagen

You might want to save the solo bike tour for after you’ve managed to get an idea of Copenhagen’s layout. So, what better way to do that than with this cycling tour of the city ?

Whereas the other bike tours we’ve mentioned go a little more off the beaten path, this is a better option if you want to see the main sights. You’ll pass by the iconic Nyhavn harbor, along with seeing Rosenborg Castle and several other tourist attractions.

The tour is operated by Scandinavian Guides, and you can meet at a souvenir shop in the city center. Note that a maximum of 15 people can book this tour.

A Private Tour With a Local

If you’re looking for something that doesn’t involve a lot of strangers, consider booking this private tour instead. You’ll meet on Åboulevard, which separates the Frederiksberg and Nørrebro districts. During the trip, you’ll see some of the locals’ favorite spots – such as Islands Brygge, which is a great place to relax when the sun’s out.

Small Towns In Denmark

Beautiful Danish villages and pretty small towns in Denmark that you must visit this year

During the tour, you’ll get a better understanding of how Copenhagen works as a city. And as you wander the bike lanes on your two-wheeled companion, you’ll get to enjoy how everything works perfectly in sync.

The route will vary from tour to tour, so you can enjoy a nice surprise each time.

Tips for Taking a Bike Tour in Copenhagen

When you participate in a bicycle tour in Copenhagen, remember that you’re sharing bike lanes with the locals. While the locals are typically a friendly bunch, acting like a nuisance on your bicycle is a great way to learn Danish profanities – and we don’t recommend it.

Here are some useful tips to follow:

  • Keep to the right-hand side of the bike lane. In Copenhagen, the outer side of the bike lane is for people to overtake and ride faster. Stay close to the pavement if you’re going to take a leisurely ride through the city, and move there if someone rings their bell.
  • Keep a single file on busy streets. Most bike lanes in Copenhagen can fit two normal-sized bikes. Try to cycle in a single line, though, as it can be annoying if two people are biking next to each other.
  • Use hand signals. Use your left hand if you’re turning left and right for the other direction. If you’re stopping to get off your bike or to change direction, put your hand up; you don’t need to do this when stopping at a red light.

Plenty of Ways to Enjoy the World’s Most Bicycle-Friendly City

You’ll find plenty of bicycle tours in Copenhagen, and the city is perfect for getting around on two wheels. A well-developed infrastructure makes getting around a breeze, and many of the Danish capital’s best sights are close to one another.

When visiting Copenhagen, you can check out the main sights and find other tours that show you the less-trodden paths. And, of course, you can always rent your own bike and explore for yourself.

For those who know where they want to go and don’t need a guide, renting an e-bike is the fastest and most fun way to get around.

Rent an e-bike and explore Copenhagen on your own.

Bikes come with baskets (so you can go shopping) and helmets, though they’re not compulsory in Denmark and you’ll see plenty of Danes cycling without them.

You can rent a bike from two hours up to five days, and they have a range of 80km so you can explore out of the city centre too.

Cycling in Copenhagen

Bike touring

Cycling in Copenhagen is hands down the best way to explore this magnificent city and its beautiful surroundings. Located on the far eastern shores of Zealand, Denmark’s largest island, only the Øresund Strait separates the capital city from neighbouring Sweden.

You’ll find cycling routes in Copenhagen wherever you look, many separated from traffic. Ride through the city to the extraordinary Frederiksberg Palace or head over to the island of Amager and ride down to the huge nature park. You can follow trails all over Amager and Copenhagen itself to see every sight or simply explore the Øresund coast.

With Copenhagen as your base, you can head off on a multitude of two-wheeled adventures. Day rides can take you north to stunning lakes, the wonderful Store Dyrehave forest and even Kronborg castle, the inspiration for Hamlet’s home. With a bicycle, Copenhagen and its surroundings are your oyster.

Best Copenhagen Bike Tours

A bike tour is the best way to experience Copenhagen. Copenhagen is one of the most cycling-friendly cities in the world. It’s how all the locals get around the city. So by taking a Copenhagen bike tour, you are seeing Copenhagen like a local.

1. Copenhagen: 3 Hour Bike Tour with Guide

A picture of a cyclist on the road in Copenhagen, cycling past a yellow building with Danish flags hanging off the wall.

⭐ RATING: 4.6 out of 5 Stars (550+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

My favourite Copenhagen bike tour is the Copenhagen: 3 Hour Bike Tour with Guide . It’s the best bike tour of the city, and it’s extremely highly rated with an average score of 4.6/5 stars with over 550 reviews.

Review which says, "It was such a nice way to get to know the city! Our guide was very passionate when he talked about Denmark and Copenhagen and we learned a lot of interesting facts and saw special places. Many thanks! Would recommend all my friends to do this experience and will be happy to do it again."

When I book a tour, I always like to go with the “tried and tested” option, and this is the tour with the highest amount of positive reviews. And I can personally vouch for it too, top quality.

During the 3 Hour Bike Tour with Guide , you will get to see most of Copenhagen’s main attractions. Taking a bike tour allows you to get around quicker than if you are walking, meaning you can see more things in a shorter amount of time .

The tour visits the Little Mermaid, Christiansborg Palace, Nyhavn Harbour, Freetown Christiania and many other sights. My favourite is Nyhavn, seeing it in real life makes the pictures seem lame. It’s stunning.

By booking this guided tour, you are also guaranteed to learn a lot about Copenhagen. The company prides itself on “ unique storytelling ” along with learning what “Copenhagen is all about”. As the review above says, the guides are indeed very passionate. And as someone who studied history in school until I was 18, I really enjoyed learning about the historical aspect of things.

You also get to try some delicious Danish cuisine, as there is a break at a local food market. Cycling can get pretty tiring! Although the tour does go at a leisurely pace, so don’t feel like you need to be an experienced cyclist to take part. But who says no to a food break? I know I definitely didn’t, especially since the food in Copenhagen is so tasty.

If you want to take a cycling tour of Copenhagen, 3 Hour Bike Tour with Guide is the best tour for you . Book it now!

2. Copenhagen 3-hour City Highlights Bike Tour

A picture of Rosenborg Castle, a key stop along most Copenhagen bike tours.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (340+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

Another great option for taking a bike tour of Copenhagen is the Copenhagen 3-hour City Highlights Bike Tour , which is also very highly rated, with an average rating of 4.5/5.

Review which says: "The 3 hour tour was very fun and manageable, with quite a few stops along the way to rest and absorb the sights. A mix of couples and singles were in our small group, and we did not feel rushed at all. Our terrific and knowledgeable guide, kept us informed and entertained along the way. Highly recommend!"

Copenhagen 3-hour City Highlights Bike Tour has also been awarded Viator’s “ Badge of Excellence “ meaning it has met their quality standards check and is one of the best tours they offer worldwide.

As the review says, there is a great mix of people and this tour is suitable for anyone and everyone. What I really liked about this tour is that the guides felt like they were part of the group- they enjoy cycling through Copenhagen as much as we do and they’re so happy to answer any questions along the way too.

The review also mentions about not feeling rushed. This is an important factor when taking a cycling tour. You want to have time to stop at each attraction and take some time to look around, rather than stopping for 2 minutes and going again.

I always hate tours which are rushed, and I’m so glad this isn’t the case here, but I guess it fits in right with the way of life in Copenhagen which is super chilled and laid back.

This tour visits 10 attractions throughout Copenhagen. Including Rosenborg Castle (pictured above), The Little Mermaid, Amalianborg and more. And who could forget the beautiful houses of Nyhavn?! My personal favourite as I said.

The guides of this tour are also known for great storytelling and being very knowledgeable about Copenhagen. As always with a tour, if you have any questions: simply ask! Your guide will be more than happy to answer them.

Taking a biking tour allows you to maximise your time in Copenhagen and see the attractions in a short period of time, and there are few tours better than this one!

It’s also very slightly cheaper than the first option, so if you are visiting Copenhagen on a lower budget , this could be a great option.

Looking to explore all of Copenhagen’s attractions on bike? Copenhagen 3-hour City Highlights Bike Tour ticks off all of them!

3. Guided Bike Tour in Wonderful Copenhagen

A picture of Amalianborg

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (200+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

Guided Bike Tour in Wonderful Copenhagen is, as the name says, a wonderful tour. It has over 200 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐reviews! Once again, tried and trusted. It’s passed the test of over 200 people.

Review which says "Biking is the best way to see Copenhagen, and this tour did not disappoint. The guides are highly knowledgeable and personable. I hope to come back again to visit and rent out a bike."

Guided Bike Tour in Wonderful Copenhagen is a very traditional and classic bike tour of Copenhagen.

The above review says “ biking is the best way to see Copenhagen ” and this could not be any more true. There’s a reason it’s how the locals get around town. And after taking tours myself, I can see why. It’s so easy to get about, and it’s really efficient too. Plus, cycling through the picturesque quaint streets is amazing.

Unless you know Copenhagen like the back of your hand, you’ll need a guide to take you around the city and guide you to the main tourist attractions. The tour company themself say “No need to study a map—a guide leads the way on this bike tour”.

This is one of the biggest tours on this list with over 17 stops! You get to see and stop at all the main attractions.

Guided Bike Tour in Wonderful Copenhagen goes a little further outside of the centre too with a view of Copenhagen Opera house, one of the city’s most beautiful and unique buildings. As much as it’s cool seeing it while cycling, I think the best view of the opera house comes from the water during a canal tour.

The size of the tour group is also limited, so you will have a small group , leading to a more personal experience. A group of 10 is much better than a group of 50, right? I always like smaller groups as the guide can actually talk to you rather than just shout information at a large group.

Throughout the 2 hours you spend on this tour, you will create memories to last a lifetime. What are you waiting for?!

4. Copenhagen Highlights: 3-Hour Bike Tour

A picture of Copenhagen City Hall, another key stop along most Copenhagen bike tours.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (240+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

A fourth option for Copenhagen bike tours is the Copenhagen Highlights: 3-Hour Bike Tour with over 200 reviews averaging at 5/5. We’re really spoilt for choice with great bike tours!

cycling tourist copenhagen

As cycling is the way the locals travel, you get to experience Copenhagen as a local by hopping on a bike. When visiting places, I always like to live like a local in some aspects. Whether it’s eating street food in Bangkok or having wine for breakfast in Italy, I like to embrace the local culture.

And Copenhagen Highlights: 3-Hour Bike Tour focuses on this factor and prides itself on the insight into local life and culture you receive from your guide.

Another big selling point of this tour, in particular, is you get to visit some hidden gems of Copenhagen, on top of seeing the most popular tourist spots.

For example, as well as seeing Nyhavn, you also pass by the Royal Danish Theater, as well as seeing Rosenborg Castle, you also get to stop at the Royal Library. I always like going a bit beyond the beaten track , and Copenhagen’s hidden gems are definitely gems!

It’s a great way to see Copenhagen as a tourist, and as a local. I personally always seek to get a bit of both. I want to see the touristy things, but I also want to go beyond the touristy front.

And Copenhagen Highlights: 3-Hour Bike Tour is the perfect way to do so. What better way than by having a local guide you?

5. Copenhagen: 3-Hour Culinary Bike Tour

A picture of some Danish pastries on a cafe's display.

⭐ RATING: 4.6 out of 5 Stars (120+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

What better way to see Copenhagen than to combine a bike tour with a food tour? Copenhagen: 3-Hour Culinary Bike Tour is the PERFECT option for foodies who also want to do a bike tour.

cycling tourist copenhagen

A bike tour of Copenhagen is an amazing experience. A food tour of Copenhagen is an amazing experience. Combining the two leads to one of the best tours you will ever take anywhere in the world! And that’s exactly what Copenhagen: 3-Hour Culinary Bike Tour offers.

Danish food is absolutely delicious. I couldn’t eat enough if I tried during my time in Copenhagen! This tour takes you to 6 incredible local eateries across Copenhagen, providing you with plenty of opportunities to try the mouth-wateringly tasty Danish cuisine.

I’m quite a fussy eater, to be honest, and I still loved the cuisine in Denmark. So taking a food tour is one of the best ways to experience everything at once.

There is a chance to try Danish fish meatballs, Danish chocolate dessert (Flødebolle), hot dogs and more. Oh, and of course, the famous Danish Smørrebrød . I’m a fan of Flødebolle personally- nothing beats a sweet treat!

Combine the yummy food with your guide’s expertise and you are guaranteed to have a great trip. Not to forget the cycling!

Fan of cycling? Fan of eating? You can’t go wrong with booking the Copenhagen: 3-Hour Culinary Bike Tour .

6. Cargo Bikes and the Science of Happiness

A picture of 2 cargo bikes with 4 group members on them.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (40+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

One of the most unique Copenhagen bike tours is the Cargo Bikes and the Science of Happiness . Instead of cycling around Copenhagen on a normal traditional bike, you get to explore the city on a cargo bike.

Review which says "We really enjoyed our ride around the city in our cargo bike. The topic of our tour was the Science of Happiness and it was insightful into the lives and design of the Danish people and communities. We stopped along the route for a hot drink and had a lovely conversation. I would definitely recommend that you add this to your "things to try" while visiting Copenhagen."

I love tours that offer something a bit different and aren’t just the same as every other tour, and Cargo Bikes and the Science of Happiness offers this.

Another unique selling point for this tour is that the tour focuses on the “Science of Happiness” which is very applicable to Copenhagen. Did you know that Copenhagen is one of the happiest cities in the world ?

Taking a tour of Copenhagen on these unique bikes, combined with the unique focus on happiness, you’re destined to have a positive experience.

When I visited Copenhagen for the first time, I really felt the atmosphere straight away. Everyone is so relaxed anything phases them, it’s a really safe city too and I think the perfect example is that the locals don’t lock their bikes, they just leave them in the street and no one steals them.

The tour is also capped at 10, so you are guaranteed to have a personal experience. The tour is also offered in 5 languages (English, French, Spanish, German and Russian)!

If you want a unique bike tour, this is the option for you!

7. Copenhagen: Private Bike Tour

A picture of Christiansborg Palace, another key stop along most Copenhagen bike tours.

⭐ RATING: 4.7 out of 5 Stars (80+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

Taking a Copenhagen bike tour is great. But taking a private bike tour is super duper really great ! Copenhagen: Private Bike Tour offers this, and you can’t go wrong with a private tour.

Review which says "If you want to get to know Copenhagen "properly", you should definitely do it by bike. The city itself is also easy to explore on foot because it is compact, but those who get around by bike see more in a reasonable amount of time. Above all, you see more when the tour is guided."

Having a private tour is the most personal experience you can have for any tour anywhere in the world. There are so many benefits that come with getting a private tour, it’s definitely worth it. And Copenhagen: Private Bike Tour is the best option.

You can ask your guide any questions you have without having a big group asking even more questions. You can also dictate how long you spend at each attraction. You can ask your guide to take photos of you at any moment. The list goes on!

I’m always hesitant to take private tours because of the price, but they always pay off.

Although it is a little more expensive, it is more than worth it. You get what you pay for. The company say you are able to “determine your own route and ride at your own pace” which is something you do not get with a group tour.

For the most premium bike tour of Copenhagen, book the Copenhagen: Private Bike Tour .

8. Copenhagen: Guided City Bike Tour

A group of 3 cyclists cycling through a street in Copenhagen.

⭐ RATING: 4.6 out of 5 Stars (80+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

As the 8th of these Copenhagen bike tours, Copenhagen: Guided City Bike Tour is yet another solid option to see the city on 2 wheels.

Review which reads "I am an experienced cyclist, but not in a busy city. My guide was able to guide through all of the controlled chaos that is in Copenhagen with pedestrian, cycling, and car traffic. She lead us by unloading trucks, tour buses, etc. Threading our way to the various sites. She also had some good stories to tell."

As the review says, Copenhagen can be hard to navigate on a bike without a guide. That’s why you should book any of these bike tours!

Copenhagen: Guided City Bike Tour , in particular, visits “90 % of Copenhagen’s highlights”, which in 2 hours is extremely impressive.

You can see most of the tourist spots in 2 hours and then spend the rest of your trip however you like! There are so many things to do that make Copenhagen worth visiting so getting all of the typical tourist sights out of the way earlier is a big advantage.

By booking this tour you also get a headset in order to hear your guide. This is pretty common with most tours. But this tour also offers rain gear and extra warm clothes, which can come in very handy if you visit Copenhagen when the weather isn’t so great.

The guides on this tour also encourage you to “strike up a conversation about life in Copenhagen” which shows how passionate this company is about you learning as much as possible throughout your tour.

While taking a tour is a great way of seeing the city, sometimes I want to know what living in it is like. A simple “so what’s it like living here?” can lead to great conversations, so much so that I can see myself living in Copenhagen in the future.

It’s hard to say no to seeing 90% of the attractions in 2 hours, and that’s why you should consider booking this tour for your trip to Copenhagen.

9. Copenhagen: 1.5-Hour Bike Tour

A picture of the Little Mermaid statue in Copenahgen.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (220+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

The shortest of these Copenhagen bike tours is Copenhagen: 1.5-Hour Bike Tour lasting only an hour and a half which is the perfect option if you are short on time . It’s also rated highly with nearly 150 reviews and an average rating of 4.5 out of 5.

Review which says "This tour was such a highlight of our visit to Copenhagen. The guide was incredibly informed about the area, adding lots of funny stories and went with the vibe of the group."

As Copenhagen: Guided City Bike Tour is so short, you spend less time at each of the attractions. I still wouldn’t say it’s rushed though. The tour is averagely-paced, giving just enough time to see the attractions, take some photos and learn some quick facts.

You can also vote as a tour group to visit locations not on the original route or to skip locations too. Of course, it depends on the majority vote. This is a pretty cool feature, I have to say. I wish more tours did this.

With fun stories and anecdotes from the guide about Danish culture, you are guaranteed to have a productive 90 minutes in terms of education, fitness and sightseeing. 3 amazing things to pull together, right?

If you’re short on time or want to see Copenhagen quickly, you can’t beat booking the Copenhagen: Guided City Bike Tour

10. Copenhagen: Palace, Fountain, and Church Guided E-Bike Tour

A picture of St. Albans Church, a key stop along this particular Copenhagen bike tour.

⭐ RATING: 4.8 out of 5 Stars (25+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | 🚲 BOOK NOW

If you aren’t the biggest fan of getting active and would prefer to take a tour on an electric bike , Copenhagen: Palace, Fountain, and Church Guided E-Bike Tour is the perfect tour for you.

Review which says "It was the highlight of our Copenhagen trip. The best way to get to know this city. We were not only taken to the most beautiful places but also guided off the tourist route and were thrilled. Great e-bikes, helmets available for free on request headsets to follow all the explanations and an open-minded nice guide who showed us his city."

Of course, taking a Copenhagen bike tour on an E-Bike really speeds up the process.

Copenhagen: Palace, Fountain, and Church Guided E-Bike Tour say that you can see as much in 2 hours on an E-Bike as you could in 3 hours on a normal bike. That’s quite the difference!

You don’t have to worry about keeping up with the group or putting in much physical activity, as the E-Bikes will drive themselves- all you really have to do is steer!

As the tour says, you get both sightseeing and fun in one tour! E-Bikes can go up to 30km/hr which is quite a thrilling experience.

I love electric bikes and scooters, they’re really fun. I actually experienced both for the first time in Scandinavia, bikes in Copenhagen and scooters in Stockholm so I can recommend the e-bikes here!

The tour itself is also quite unique as it focuses on palaces, fountains and churches. It’s definitely one to consider!

Want to combine fun and sightseeing? Take the Copenhagen: Palace, Fountain, and Church Guided E-Bike Tour .

This sensational city sits on the islands of Zealand and Amager, connected to Malmö in Sweden by the Øresund Bridge. Established in the 10th Century as a Viking village, in the 15th Century, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark. Since the turn of the 21st Century, it has enjoyed a boom in urban and cultural development, becoming one of the major financial centers of Northern Europe.

The city boasts a huge variation in architecture, especially between its diverse neighborhoods, and benefits from a high number of cycle paths - this is a very bike-friendly city! At the heart of the city, grand palaces dominate the stunning skyline, with gorgeous gardens, charming churches, and vibrant cultural venues all nestled in their shadows.

Cycling in Copenhagen

  • 3.2.2 The blue route
  • 5.1 City bikes
  • 5.2 Bike rental
  • 5.3 Rickshaws

Cycling in Copenhagen is something everyone should experience once in their lives. With almost unrivalled bike infrastructure, certainly outside the Netherlands, and a mind blowing number of cyclists and bicycles, Copenhagen is a prime example on how a city can rid itself of its oil addiction. Dozens of bicycle enthusiasts, traffic professionals, bicycle evangelicals and environmentalists have made a pilgrimage to the city, in fact 11% of tourists arriving in the city, state that they have come to witness what is known as bicycle nirvana, though its not without its problems. If you are already in the city for unrelated reasons, there is no better way to get around the city's attractions, than breezing along the bicycle tracks feeling like a local for brief moment.

Understand [ edit ]

cycling tourist copenhagen

The first bicycles descended on Copenhagen from France in the 1890s and in the space of just 17 years, Copenhagen became the hot spot of bicycling in Europe, and until the 1950s the cyclists of the city never looked over their shoulder, and their numbers continued to balloon until Henry Ford's model T, became cheap enough to be sufficiently attractive to appeal to human laziness and yearning for status. For nearly 3 decades Copenhagen then followed the path of most other cities in the world, and the famous bicycle girl who had adorned the classic tourist posters, withered, and became increasingly unattractive to the city's populace.

It took two oil crises in the 1970s before the citizens of Copenhagen again opened their eyes to her simplistic beauty, and decided to take a different path than their peers around the world. As Denmark did not have any significant oil reserves a way of preserving fuel had to be found, and urban traffic was one of them. Massive demonstrations to demand space on the roads for bicycles ensued, and slowly but steadily the town hall steered Copenhagen down the road that would lead to Copenhagen becoming one of the leading cities of bicycles in the world, along with Amsterdam.

Time flew by, global warming (which had been theorized about as early as the 1890s) started coming to the fore, Copenhageners continued to bike like they had done for decades, in increasing numbers but without making much of a racket about the fact, until in the 2000s a Canadian photographer revived the old bicycle girl, this time in the modern incarnation of Cycle Chic, and the world began to take note, mayors of world cities like New York and London biked the streets of Copenhagen for inspiration, presidents came, CNN came and suddenly Copenhagenization had entered the vernacular of global dialogue.

While Copenhagen is still one of the leaders, many other cities, especially in the Netherlands, but also medium-sized towns in Germany took a similar approach to urban transport in the 1970s and '80s (largely as a response to the oil price shocks of 1973 and the following years), but despite bike culture being important to the residents and local politicians of Münster , Amsterdam or Erlangen their model has attracted much less attention across the borders and especially in the Anglosphere than that of Copenhagen.

Etiquette [ edit ]

While Copenhagen is often hailed as bicycle Nirvana, its not all a dance on roses. There are more bicycles than people in Copenhagen, so biking in the streets of Copenhagen can, and probably will feel, intimidating for even experienced cyclists, as cyclists mostly bike in a brisk pace without much leeway, in a carefully orchestrated ballet of sorts - It takes very little to mess up the harmony. If you have not biked in a city with the modal share of Copenhagen before, you should probably skip the rush hour (7.30-9 and 15-17), even if you consider yourself an experienced cyclist.

And even outside rush hour there is an etiquette - strictly policed, heavily fined laws - to follow. Breaking most of the points below, carries a 700 kroner fine if you are caught by police.

  • Boxed turns on left ( Copenhagen left ), probably the most important rule. Turning left is a two-stage process. First you cross the street straight ahead, stop, wait for green or for traffic to clear in case the intersection is unsignaled, and then you cross the street to complete your left turn.
  • No right on red , you'll see quite a few locals doing it anyway, but don't.
  • Stay off the pavement , biking there is never allowed. If there are cycle lanes, you should also stay off the road, even if the cycle lane feels intimidating.
  • Keep right to allow other cyclists to overtake you. Cycling is the main mode of transport for citizens here, so people are on their way to work or school, and not biking for leisure.
  • Keep two hands on the bike .
  • Remember to signal , if you care to avoid crashes this is important, a hand straight up in the air to signals you intend to stop, a hand horizontally to your left or right indicates you intend to turn.
  • Pay attention to lights and signs , cycling is highly organized here, and both drivers and fellow cyclists expect you to adhere to these, so if you don't you may cause accidents.
  • Use bike lights at night , when the streetlights are turned on, it is also mandatory to turn on your bike lights. Police strictly enforce this, and fines are heavy

Get in [ edit ]

While most visitors arrive in Copenhagen by plane or cruise ship, and then rent a bike in the city, it's also possible to arrive by your own wheels on long-distance routes. The most popular options are from Berlin and that other bicycle Mecca Amsterdam . There also used to be a ferry from England , offering access from London , but service on it was discontinued in 2014.

From Berlin you can take the Berlin-Kopenhagen Radweg . The journey is around 630 km. Between Denmark and Germany you cross the Baltic sea on the Rostock - Gedser ferry. Once in Denmark follow the signs of national bicycle route 9 to Copenhagen. Fast cyclists need a week to complete this journey, most people take longer.

From Amsterdam you can take a leg on the North Sea Bicycle Route [formerly dead link] along the North Sea to Denmark. Once you enter Denmark you can either continue along the coast to Esbjerg and follow the same bicycle route 6 to Copenhagen as from London, or you can follow the Hærvej route further inland and join up with route 6 in Vejen . Via Esbjerg it's a 1860 km trip, so most people will need a few weeks to take this journey.

Once you are in Denmark, the Danish Bicycle Association has an excellent resource in Cyclistic [dead link] to help you plan your journey

Map

Public transit [ edit ]

If you want to explore destinations further afield, such as Køge and Hillerød it's free to bring bicycles on the city's S-train system. The first, middle and last carriage are equipped with bike racks (46 of them in total). Remember to use the back wheel when you park your bike in them, since this prevents the bike tipping over when the train stops at stations. You are not allowed to enter or exit S-trains with a bike on the Nørreport Station during rush hours.

It's also possible to bring your bike on the Metro , but the there is a rush hour curfew from 07:00-09:00 and 15:30-17:30. Either way you must buy a special bicycle ticket (14 kr in 2023) for your bike in the automatic vending machines.

It is free to bring your bike on the harbour bus' boats, although space is limited. Try to avoid rush hours.

Finally it's also possible to take your bike on the Øresund trains between Elsinore and Malmö in Sweden. There is a carriage with a flexible compartment for bikes marked with a pictogram, usually one of the middle carriages. Within Denmark you use the same bicycle ticket as on the Metro, across to Sweden, you'll need to pay a much higher surcharge, equivalent of children's ticket on the same route.

The bridge route [ edit ].

cycling tourist copenhagen

14 km, or ca one hour at local speed One possible excursion that is relatively easy to follow starts at Dronning Louises Bro , from where you cycle down one of the busiest bicycle streets Nørrebrogade, the cycle tracks are so wide here that a local shop owner quietly wondered if it was needed for planes to land on after they had been installed. 500 m down the road after the first intersection, the long yellow wall of the Assistant cemetery appears on the left, a popular picnic spot during the summer, and the final resting place of cultural giants H.C. Andersen and Kirkegård. Continue ahead until you reach ‘The Red Square’ as locals have dubbed it, if you are interested in urban design, the Superkilen park which stretches 500 m north is a good place to explore. Once done, head south on the Nørrebro cykelrute , after about 1,5 km you will reach the Åbuen bridge and another 1 km later you'll reach a large shopping centre and metro station on Falkoner Allé, turn left here, and after about 5 minutes you'll reach Frederiksberg Park, along the street there are many family (some would call it beer-) gardens, which is good place to break for lunch, a little later there the road up the hill will take you to Frederiksberg Palace, Cisternerne and the Zoological gardens (see Frederiksberg for details). Continue down Pilé Alle, and just when the road make a right turn, turn left down the cobblestoned street (Ny Carlsbergvej), which will take you through the old Carlsberg brewery and the iconic Elephant gate. Continue straight ahead, across the wide boulevard, until you reach the train tracks, and follow them left for another 500 m, until you can cross them on the bridge at Dybbølsbro station. Here it gets a bit tricky but at the end of the bridge you follow the cycle lane outside the Fisktorvet shopping centre 360 degrees until you are facing the bridge again and then you turn sharp right onto the Bicycle Snake (huge ramps for cyclists) which takes you on to the beautiful Bryggebroen bike bridge , across the harbour. Turn left and follow the harbour towards the city, during the summer the Islands Brygge park is full of life and people swimming in the harbour. Continue along the water and check out Lille Langebro on your left, another bridge exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians. After another 250m cross the architecturally extraordinary Cirkelbroen bridge into the neighbourhood of Christianshavn. Right after the bridge turn right and follow the canal along its left side until you reach Børnehusbroen bridge, where you change to the right side of the canal. Follow this road for about 700m and turn left towards Inderhavnsbroen , another beautiful pedestrian and bicyclist bridge. End the tour with a cool drink in one of the many bars and restaurants along Nyhavn waterfront.

Start at the bicycle counter by City hall while not as impressive as the other counter, around 7000 cyclists pass here daily. Continue straight ahead down H.C. Andersens Boulevard and enjoy the separated bike lanes on the busiest street in the city as you pass the city hall square and the Ørsted park, a remnant of Copenhagens old ramparts. As you reach the lakes, you will pass a white old beautiful building called the Søpavillonen (Lake Pavilion), now a nightclub built in 1896 as the home of the Copenhagen Iceskating Union. At the end of the lake, turn right to follow the cycle track along the lakes, hailing back to the 1910s this bicycle track is among the first build bicycle infrastructure built by the city as you continue along the lakes two tunnels will take you under the crossing streets, the end of the lakes is a good rest stop at the two cafés with lakeside seating. Turn right along the end of the lakes, and then make a left at the signalled intersection down Classensgade. This street is one of few in Copenhagen to have painted bike lanes rather than the standard raised bicycle tracks, but notice how you still have parked cars to protect you from traffic. Follow the street to the train tracks at the end, where you should turn right down the lovely bidirectional cycle track until you reach the bicycle-pedestrian-only bridge across the train tracks. Cross it, and continue along the ramparts of the Kastellet citadel, dating back to 1624 and well preserved it's a lovely place to disembark your bikes and go for a stroll. When you reach the lower end of the hill The Little Mermaid is on your left. When the road ends under the restaurant it turns into a cycle path that will take you to the harbour front promenade. It is not common but perfectly legal to cycle here, so zig-zag between the walking tourists at a slow speed until you reach the big fountain where you can make a short detour to see the Royal Palace. Continue along the harbour and you'll pass the modern Royal Danish Playhouse and reach the famous Nyhavn, if the sun is out, join the locals for a beer at the bulwark. Cross the water on the short road bridge and turn left to cross the harbour on the US$30-million Inner Harbour Bridge , which opened in 2013. Continue straight over another short bicycle bridge and you'll reach Prinsessegade where you should end this tour with a stroll at Christiania free town. Don't let the relatively shady area at the main entrance, known as Pusher Street, put you off.

Copenhagen: A Cyclist’s Paradise – Exploring the City on Two Wheels

If you come to Copenhagen and do not take a chance to get into the saddle of a bicycle, you’ve missed a lot. Copenhageners love their bikes more than any other way of commuting. With an extensive network of bike lanes, traffic lights designed for cyclists, and special security measures, it’s hard not to notice that this city is meant to be a haven for cyclists. From exploring the picturesque neighborhoods to discovering the city’s landmarks, there’s no shortage of things to see and do on two wheels. So, how do you experience the city’s rich culture and history? Here are the tips that will give you a clue about navigating Copenhagen by bike.

Planning a cycling route

If you plan a cycling route in Copenhagen, you’re in for a treat! Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a beginner, Copenhagen has something to offer everyone. So grab the bike, put on your helmet, and let’s plan a route that will take you on a journey through all the corners of this unique city.

City center route

Cycling around Copenhagen’s city center is an experience like no other. That’s where classic meets contemporary, and old blends with new. So, when you are on a bike ride, make sure you include these spots in your route.

Christiansborg Palace

You can’t lose a chance to see Denmark’s center of power — Christiansborg Palace. As you cycle past this iconic landmark, take a moment to admire its beautiful architecture and learn about its fascinating history. You can even take a guided tour to explore the palace’s interiors.

Tivoli Gardens

We bet you will want to look at the world’s second-oldest amusement park. Tivoli Gardens is a magical place with beautiful gardens, thrilling rides, and a charming atmosphere—a perfect spot to unwind after a long bike ride. So plan your itinerary so you can stop here at the finish line.

Nyhavn harbor route

No visit to Copenhagen is complete without the Nordhavn route. This is a popular 13-kilometer path with brightly colored buildings, bustling cafes, and picturesque waterfront views to give you a fascinating ride.

Little Mermaid statue

When you take a ride, take a chance to stop by to check out an iconic bronze Little Mermaid statue—a girl figure sitting on the shore of the harbor and recollecting her lost mermaid past. It’s beautiful, unusual, and a little sad.

The Opera House

As you cycle along the Nyhavn harbor, take a moment to admire one of the most modern opera houses in the world. The Copenhagen Opera House is noted for its new forms that give the building a striking appearance.

The Royal Playhouse

Located right on the waterfront at the city’s edge, the Royal Playhouse should be on your bike route in Copenhagen. Its modern, minimalist exterior blends in beautifully with its waterfront location.

Outer suburbs route

Covering around 40 kilometers, the Outer Suburbs route is a great way to get familiar with the city’s surrounding suburbs and green areas. If you’ve been looking for a chance to explore some of the lesser-known parts of Copenhagen, this is the path to go.

Frederiksberg Palace

To get acquainted with Baroque culture, visit the Frederiksberg Palace. It was built atop Frederiksberg hill by King Frederik IV. Since the 1700s, it has been the home to Danish royalty and other important figures. Be sure to take a guide, and in addition to an unforgettable visual experience, you will learn many interesting stories.

The Copenhagen Zoo

If you’re looking for a fun pit stop during your outer suburbs, route in Copenhagen, and pedal right to the Copenhagen Zoo. Located just a stone’s throw away from the Frederiksberg Palace, you will definitely want to say hello to 4,000 furry and feathered friends.

The Carlsberg Brewery

Head to the refreshing spot of your bike journey—the Carlsberg Brewery. Take a tour of the brewery to learn about the brewing process, check out the old horse stables, and of course, enjoy a refreshing pint of beer at the end. Just do not overdo it because you still need to go and see a lot of things.

Cycling etiquette in Copenhagen

If you are new to cycling in the city of Copenhagen, be aware of the rules to stay safe in dense bicycle traffic. This way, you will ensure your ride is safe, fun, and enjoyable for everyone.

Use hands signals

Remember to hand signal your turns and stops so that other cyclists can anticipate your movements. This way, you will avoid collisions and stay safe during cycling. Here are the basic hand signals you should learn to communicate effectively with other bike riders:

  • Extend your right arm straight out to the side to show that you are going to turn right.
  • Extend your left arm straight out to the side to hint that you are turning left.
  • Extend your left arm downward with your palm facing backward to indicate that you’re slowing down or stopping.

Keep to the right

As you are biking in Denmark, make sure you stay to the right of the bike lane or path. This is a necessary step for ensuring a smooth flow of bike traffic. This way, you let faster-moving cyclists pass you on the left. At the same time, slower bike riders can pedal at a convenient pace without feeling any pressure.

Ring a bell when passing other cyclists

Do you ride faster than other cyclists on your way? You can overtake them from the left side, but make sure it’s safe for all riders. Also, don’t forget to give a friendly ring of your bell when you’re approaching someone from behind!

Don’t block the bike path or loan

Because of the heavy bike traffic, it can be dangerous to block the bike path. When it is blocked, cyclists are forced to swerve into traffic or onto the sidewalk, which can increase the risk of collisions with cars or pedestrians. So it’s better to avoid creating situations that may endanger other traffic participants.

Does it happen that you have to ride a bike in the dark? Make sure you have lights on the front and rear ends of the bike. If you rent one, your cycle will already be equipped with everything you may need for a safe ride.

Finding and using rental bikes in Copenhagen

Where to get a rental bike.

If you do not know where to rent a bike in Copenhagen, here is a list of a few services that you may find particularly handy:

  • Bycyklen is an official bike-sharing system that provides electric bikes with built-in GPS across the entire city. Use an app to rent a bike. Note that the rental price includes insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance.
  • Donkey Republic is a bike-sharing app enabling affordable bike rentals in Copenhagen. The app allows you to locate and unlock bikes around the city, and the rental price includes insurance and support.
  • Baisikeli is a bike rental service. Here you will find a wide selection of bikes, from traditional to cargo bikes. The rental price includes a lock, a map, and a helmet. For an additional fee, the company offers guided tours and repair services.

The rental price includes maintenance, repairs, and roadside assistance. The greatest advantage is that the bike will be delivered to your destination, so you do not have to go around the city to pick up your bicycle.

Tips to rent the perfect bike

When you take the plunge to rent a bike in Copenhagen, grab my tips that will help you make an optimal choice.

The bike type

There are many bikes to rent in Copenhagen, including traditional city bikes, electric bikes, cargo bikes, and more.

  • Traditional city bikes are a classic and affordable choice for cycling in Copenhagen, but they may not be the best option for longer distances or hilly terrain.
  • Electric bikes will help you cover more ground or aid in uphill climbs, but they are pricier than traditional bicycles.
  • Cargo bikes are great for families or those transporting large items around the city. They may be difficult to maneuver for regular use.

Bike rent services in Copenhagen offer flexible rent options for everyone who wants to get into the saddle of a bike. You may find daily or monthly subscription terms. Some services offer you to book a bike, while others enable you to get one available in real-time.

Maintenance

Before you hit the road, check the bike for any damage or issues. This will ensure you won’t be charged an extra maintenance fee when you return the two-wheeler back.

Accessories and extra services

What are the most important bicycle rules we should be aware of in Copenhagen?

Always keep to your right and make way for other cyclists wanting to overtake you. When you need to make left hand turns in intersections then you cannot turn diagonally with the cars. You will have to go straight across and then wait for the green light signal to go over again. For a more visual explanation then please see: http://cycleguide.dk/2010/05/how-to-do-a-hook-turn/

Using your phones while e-biking is also prohibited and you can get a fine should the police catch you. If you need to take pictures then make a full stop and do so.

Wearing safety helmets are not a requirement but at your own discretion, personal need for comfort safety. We do recommend it especially if you are not used to biking. We will always be advocates of putting your safety first and therefore helmets are included in all tours and rentals.

Du vil elske læskende retter i København.

Viking trails to vineyard tours: 10 of the best cycle routes in Denmark

Freewheel around Scandinavia’s capital of cycling and discover the greenest way to see Denmark

Denmark is a haven for cyclists of all abilities, with 11,000km of marked cycle routes to ride. From adventurous cycling on multi-day trips that take in the country’s most varied scenery, to day trips and wine tours, these are the country’s best bike routes for everyone, from hobbyists to expert-level athletes. To make it extra easy, accommodation options line the routes, including simple campsites and shelters , run by the Danish Nature Agency and offered for free or almost free, as well as B&Bs and hotels especially set up for cyclists, with bike rooms, e-bike charging stations and rooms made available for fixing your bike as you go. Aktiv Danmark has a list of bike-friendly accommodation and there is also a group of Danish Bike Hotels that have bike facilities. Bike rental is available in major cities and towns all over the country.

The Harbour Circle Start in Denmark’s capital with this 13km cycling route around the main harbour. It’s easy to fit into a short break, and takes in Copenhagen’s harbour swimming spots, waterside wine bars such as Rosforth & Rosforth , major attractions such as the colourful Nyhavn waterfront, and off-the-beaten-track treasures such as Cafe Slusen , where you can eat sardines from the tin and sip beer with a calm view of the entire harbour.

People hanging out at Hasle Harbour Bath

Bornholm by bike The sunny island of Bornholm has 230km of signposted cycle routes . Follow the dark green signs down quiet lanes to harbours awash with ice-cream shops, and past smokehouses where you can snack on just-smoked fish. Weave in and out of dappled patches of sunshine under the trees, watch out for hares and pheasants in the fields, and enjoy the quieter pace of life.

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route Denmark’s longest cycle route – all 820km of it – encompasses islands and ferries, sheltered bays and seafaring ports as it traces the Baltic Sea coast. It breaks down into 14 stages, the pick of which are sections 10 and 11, which hug the coast. You’ll enjoy views of the islands of southern Funen and – if you’re lucky – the sight of porpoises.

2. STUB Vinyaard& Vintårn on the island of Røsnæs

The Rosnæs peninsula wineries Pop your bike on a train and travel roughly two and a half hours west of Copenhagen to find a winery route made for cyclists. On the Rosnæs peninsula, among the driest and sunniest spots in the country, vines grow, grapes are pressed and wine tours by bike are the thing to do. Starting at Stub Vingård , a 16km trail runs to Rosnæs Vingård through a green landscape carved by the last ice age, taking in the Barfod and Dyrehøj wineries along the way.

The Ancient Road This destination is more than a cycle route: it’s a path through Denmark’s history. Also called Hærvejen , it’s one of the most atmospheric trails in the country, taking in heathlands and rivers, along with key Danish historical sites. Discover the Viking Jelling stone and the 3,000-year-old burial site of the Egtved Girl. There are dolmen and further burial mounds on a route that has been used for centuries.

The West Coast Route Running from Skagen all the way down the west coast to Rudbøl, this route offers some of the best views of Denmark’s contrasting scenery. Mostly paved and always signposted, the route skirts the gloriously wild dune landscape of Thy National Park, golden-sand beaches and the bird-filled marshes of the Wadden Sea National Park on its 560km journey.

A Danish father and son standing with their bikes on a summer day amidst trees on the island of Mors in Denmark with the Limfjord in the background.

The Limfjord Route Another long route – this time 610km – the journey around the Limfjord in North Jutland is broken into stages and winds around the fjord from Aalborg, via ferries and bridges. There are plenty of restaurants along the way, giving you the chance to enjoy the region’s local oysters.

Berlin-Copenhagen Two lively cities with a sea between them and a shared love of cycling unite via this 630km route . The tour skirts the white cliffs of Møn and the flower-filled meadows of Falster on the way to the ferry to Germany.

The Fjord Path Half an hour west of Copenhagen, the journey around the Isefjord and Roskilde fjord begins. It’s rich with Viking history, and nature, running through forests and fields as well as on tarmacked roads. Look out for Thomas Dambo’s trolls on the way – there is a hidden one in a quarry nearby – and expect to spend a week or more exploring the full 275km route (or take it in sections). Bike hire is available in Roskilde.

The Border Route Cycle from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea while crisscrossing Denmark’s border with Germany and uncover a world of history along the way. The old marsh town of Højer in Denmark marks the start of the 130km route , with the finish line in Flensburg, Germany. It’s a wonderfully flat journey, with orchards and meadows alongside it. The land on both sides of the border has changed nationalities multiple times in the last few hundred years.
