Is a 4-day cruise long enough for a short cruise getaway?

Learn how a 4-day cruise can be long enough for the ideal short cruise getaway

Speak to any avid cruiser and you may be surprised to learn that they cruise at least four times a year. If your time and budget allow, this is a great way to see new places. But not all cruises are created equal. And to squeeze in more sailings and cruise more than once a year for most of us who have both time and budget constraints, means that a 4-day cruise could be the answer. And just the sort of short vacation break you are looking for.

A short cruise of 4 days can be a perfect trip for a mini family vacation, a friends-getaway, or a short spring break. It’s also an excellent option if you celebrate a special occasion – you always inevitably see someone celebrating something during the 4 days on board.

Quick navigation

Does a 4-day cruise offer value for money?

They are no doubt that a short cruise is very appealing. If you look closer at the cruise fare, you will find the shorter cruises are cheaper than the more standard 7-night cruise, with is excellent if you have a strict budget. However, the cost per night could be slightly higher than longer cruises.

But remember what is included, all cruise lines have all your meals, entertainment, luxury accommodation, and service in the base price. Indeed it could be better value for money than staying at home and going out to the theater, followed by a great restaurant.

And it’s even better value if you live within driving distance of the port. Remember to weigh the cost of parking against taking a taxi or uber to the port, especially if there are more than two of you and you can share the cost.

To help you figure out if a 4-day cruise is long enough for you, here are our top 10 tips to consider when looking for your next short cruise:

1. Choose a good cruise ship

The newest cruise ships have the most facilities. The challenge is to find the latest ships that offer a short cruise. Not an easy task as almost none of the brand-new cruise ships are on a shorter cruise. Most of the older cruise ships, which are in less demand, will be doing the short routes for cruises that last just a few days.

That doesn’t mean to say that short cruises are only on significantly older ships. Royal Caribbeans Voyager of the Seas and Grandeur of the Seas are good ships with plenty to offer.

Almost all 4-day cruises only include only one or two ports of call. Three if you’re fortunate. That means you are practically guaranteed some sea days. So when choosing your cruise ship, find out what facilities are on board.

A great gym or spa treatment may be necessary for you. Or a karaoke bar or basketball court. Or that specialty restaurant that looks great.

Be sure you choose a cruise ship that gives you fun activities to fill your sea day. And you can find these on the smaller vessels too.

These days, cruise guests want more than comedy shows, music quizzes, or karaoke nights. Top on many guests’ wish lists is doing things you have never before experienced. For example, ziplining, skywalks, go-karting, or rock wall climbing.

But not everyone is looking for adrenalin-pumping action. Entertainment on board can include Broadway-style musicals, and first-class acrobatics in an aqua theater, or in ice shows. If you find a ship that offers some or all of these, it means added value for money on board with top-class entertainment.

2. Pick an itinerary with at least one port of call

Choose a route that includes at least one port of call. Avoid “cruises to nowhere” trips. The opportunity to explore at least one destination will make your short cruise so much more exciting, and you will get more out of your vacation time. And who knows, it may just be a bucket list destination you’ve wanted to visit for a while now.

Even on a limited budget, there will be ways in which you can enjoy time on shore. Spend some time researching the destination. You don’t have to choose expensive tours offered by the cruise line, make your own plans to explore using public transportation or a hop-on hop-off bus.

3. Upgrade to a balcony cabin

If your budget allows, a balcony cabin, known as a veranda cabin, is the way to go. Not only will it give you extra square meters of living space, but it is also a great place to relax with a room service breakfast or to watch the sunset. It gives you your private, quiet space, which is sometimes hard to find on a busy cruise ship.

While an inside cabin is the cheapest onboard cruise ships, there are often great offers on balcony cabins when sailings are first released. If you are a planner and like to book your cruise vacation in advance, keep an eye on balcony cabin offers for your short cruise.

Alternatively, if you are on a strict budget, consider booking the lowest price class, which is “guaranteed” inside the cabin. This way, you may have the good fortune to be upgraded to a higher cabin category.

On the other end of the price range, there are good reasons it makes sense to book a cruise ship suite . Especially if you are a large group traveling together.

Also, consider where you are sailing. In the warm weather of the Caribbean, you will love having the open space, natural light, and fresh air balcony cabin offers.

4. Prebook a specialty restaurant

Make your short cruise a bit more special by booking specialty restaurants for one evening. But do your research before the book, as some are better than others.

Some of the best specialty restaurants we can recommend on Royal Caribbean cruise ships are

  • Wonderland – a unique and imaginative dining experience inspired by Alice in Wonderland
  • Giovanni’s Table – a great option for super Italian food that will suit everyone
  • Izumi – if you love sushi, Izumi has excellent sushi options and an entertaining dining experience.

With Norwegian Cruise line , Cagneys Steak House is popular. If you have paid to have the premium package meals this is definitely one to include as an option. As is Murano, this is probably one of the best value-for-money specialty dining options which is a great experience.

If you do not have a specialty dining restaurant as part of a pre-purchased package, you will be paying on average USD$40 per person extra to dine in the restaurant, plus around 18% in gratuities. So make sure you know the exact price before confirming your reservation and that you budget accordingly.

A tip for your sea day is to try the main dining room for lunch. This will be included in the price of your fare and is an excellent alternative to the buffet restaurant. Very often the lunch served here is plentiful and fantastic.

5. Plan your shore excursion

With just a few ports on a shorter cruise, places on the cruise ship’s own excursions will be limited. If you like the look of one of the shore excursions then book it as soon as possible so you don’t miss out.

Alternatively, plan your own day and explore the port city or surrounding area. There are always a lot of local transportation options at ports, alternatively, you can book with a trusted external supplier such as Viator.

6. Cruise in the best weather possible

While they are no guarantees for good weather, your short cruise will be much more fun when the weather is good. So choose to cruise when your region has the best chance of sun. This may seem like a trivial fact, but it’s easy to forget. Just because cruise ships sail year-round doesn’t mean they always cruise in good weather season.

7. Extend your vacation with pre-cruise hotel nights

3 or 4-night cruises are easier on your pocket than five-night cruises or being onboard a whole week, and an ideal way to actually also test that you like being on board a cruise ship. If you are starting or ending in a destination that has long been on your bucket list, why not extend your stay with a hotel night, or two?

8. Entertainment is key

It is almost impossible to be bored on a cruise ship. However, the quality of entertainment can vary greatly from one cruise line to another. Before you book your cruise, find out what is offered for evening entertainment. What kind of shows does the theater have? Is there ice or aqua shows during your sailing? See if there are some favorite music venues or nightclubs you can visit.

9. Find a new experience

Isn’t it great to get away and be able to have a brand-new experience? Much depends on the cruise port you visit, but think swimming with dolphins, zip-lining in a rainforest, paddling a canoe, or snorkeling in coral reefs.

A short 4-day cruise with great destinations offers an opportunity to join in an activity you wouldn’t have the possibility of doing closer to home.

Carnival Radiance Review

4 day cruise reddit

Carnival Radiance debuted in December 2021 after a $200-million-dollar dry dock makeover that revamped the former Carnival Victory. The massive refit allowed Carnival to stock the 2,984-passenger ship with the line's fan favorites – think: WaterWorks slides, SkyCourse ropes course and a thermal suite, to name a few -- along with new top-line features, such as Shaq O'Neal's crowd-pleasing Big Chicken shack. Radiance has arrived primed to offer big-ship amenities with the coziness of a mid-size ship, making it a fun, easy-to-navigate, all hands-on deck cruise experience for newbies and veterans alike.

Carnival Radiance Deck Plans Are Welcomingly Familiar and Decor is Updated

In 2018, Carnival Victory received its first round of updates, laying the foundation for its ultimate conversion into Carnival Radiance just three years later. Updates in 2018 introduced Carnival Fun Ship 2.0 features, such as Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, Carnival Deli, Alchemy Bar, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Tequila Bar, Cherry on Top, Bonsai Sushi and a handful of new staterooms.

For cruisers who had the opportunity to sail on Carnival Victory (or any other Carnival Triumph-class ship), the bones of the 2022 Destiny-class Carnival Radiance will feel faintly familiar. Completely reimagined spaces and noticeable modifications of Carnival Radiance's deck plans make it look and feel like a completely different ship.

Adding to the new experience is the replacement of Carnival Victory's love-it-or-hate-it spunky, bold and dark color scheme. Radiance sports an entirely new, updated palette that gives off big beach vibes. Classic, airy and fresh sea tones like peach salmon and seafoam green can be found throughout the ship, along with delicate and modern light fixtures

Carnival Radiance New Cloud 9 Spa Rooms Have Several Perks -- and One Big Flaw

Passengers looking to balance out their Fun Ship cruise with a little R&R might want to consider upgrading their interior or balcony room to one of the ship's new Cloud 9 Spa rooms. These rooms have a more relaxing color palette in their decor and come with great perks, including unlimited free access to the onboard thermal suite – a new Radiance feature -- often well worth the price of the upgrade on its own.

Other Cloud 9 room perks include priority spa appointments, treatment discounts on port days, a free scrub kit, two free fitness classes per stateroom guest, free body composition analysis and in-room extras such as spa bathrobes and slippers and Elemis shower products.

Spa Cloud 9 rooms are located at the forward of the ship, on Deck 10 (Panorama Deck) and Deck 11 (Spa Deck), giving guests close access to the gym, spa and thermal suites. One downside to the otherwise clutch location of these rooms is that port side Cloud 9 Spa rooms on Deck 11 are located directly below the ship's Camp Ocean kids club. Expect to hear running and stomping nightly until the kids club closes late into the night.

Carnival Radiance Food Options are Plentiful, Though Small Eateries Have Long Lines

Between the buffet, main dining room, three specialty restaurants and six eateries, there's no shortage of places to eat on Carnival Radiance. And we love that, in typical Carnival fashion, the majority of the onboard eateries are included in the price of the cruise. That said, expect long lines during peak times for popular spots such as Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, Pizzeria del Capitano, and Big Chicken.

Carnival Deli, Guy's Pig & Anchor, Seafood Shack and Bonsai Sushi are less likely to have exceedingly long lines during peak times, though the latter two options cost extra.

Guy's Pig & Anchor, Pizzeria del Capitano, Cucina del Capitano, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Shaq's wildly-popular Big Chicken are all new additions on Radiance.

The Ship Is Brimming with Onboard Venues and Specialty Areas (But They're Tiny)

It's worth remembering that Radiance's bones date back to 2000, granting a finite amount of space onboard available to refit. For those curious how big Carnival Radiance is, consider this: while Victory may have been one of the largest ships of its time, Radiance -- which has 101,509 gross tonnage -- is now considered to be a mid-sized ship. The sheer number of new features Carnival was able to bring onboard Radiance is nothing short of impressive.

The trade-off for having the best that Carnival has to offer at your fingertips is that some indoor venues come off being tight on space. The squeeze is particularly felt in the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, the Liquid Lounge main theater, Lido Marketplace buffet line and in the casino. That said, the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar, the spa and thermal suite, gym, outdoor eateries and bars and pool areas feel as spacious as usual.

Who's On Board Carnival Radiance?

Our initial sailing aboard Carnival Radiance took place during the omicron surge, resulting in at abnormally low capacity. Still, we were happy to see a diverse mix of passengers onboard with us. Fellow passengers ranged in ages from wee kiddos to retirees, with many passengers appearing to be in their late 30s to mid-50s and from all over the U.S.

Couples, solo cruisers, families and friends could be found throughout the ship. Radiance is perfectly set up to appeal to partiers, sun bathers, day drinkers, night owls and quiet folks, all just looking for an easy and fun escape.

LONG WEEKEND CRUISES

Published on May 15, 2019

Royal Caribbean's Instagram for Live Updates

It's tempting to think of a cruise as an epic ocean escape, but you don't need a long trip to have a great adventure. Spend a long weekend exploring the pristine, white beaches of the Bahamas, the ancient Tulum Ruins in Mexico or the sky-blue waters of the Eastern Caribbean during holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and Labor Day.

WHERE WILL YOUR NEXT WEEKEND CRUISE TAKE YOU?

Woman Snorkeling by a Coral, Bermuda

Don't let the long weekend flash before your eyes — see the world instead! Choose among these unforgettable destinations and make the most of your long weekend on a 3 to 5-night cruise. Gather your gang and put the nine-to-five behind you as you embrace island time. From zip-lining over the stunning waters of Haiti to snorkeling off the pink beaches of Bermuda , you'll be sure to bring new meaning to the term weekend warrior.

OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

Mexico Ancient Ruins

In just a few days, you can cruise to Mexico and explore the world-famous beach resort of Cancun, discover colorful Cozumel and traipse through the ancient Tulum Ruins. Venture inland into the jungles of the Yucatán or underground into the iconic cenote swimming holes. Mexico is close to many U.S. cruise ports, such as Galveston , which makes it an ideal choice for shorter cruise itineraries.

Another excellent choice would be the Bahamas, which is the most convenient option if you plan to cruise from Florida. The wide variety of ports within the islands of the Bahamas themselves make this a perfect destination for Memorial Day weekend cruises. Calling at Nassau allows you to explore the vibrant capital of the Bahamas, while wilder adventures await in Bimini, Paradise Island and beyond. Further sweetening the deal is Perfect Day at CocoCay , where the kids can brave the largest wave pool in the Caribbean while you belly up to the swim-up bar.

Jamaica Falmouth Musicians

One of the best last-minute tips for weekend cruises is to select ports like luxurious Grand Cayman and Falmouth, Jamaica , which are far enough from the mainland that they might not be as crowded as closer options. Other popular cruise destinations in the Western Caribbean include San Juan, resort-filled Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic and even the port of Labadee in Haiti — where you can find thrilling adventure on the world's longest over-water zip line.

Alternatively, if you can stretch your Labor Day weekend cruise beyond just a few nights, you might venture deep into the Eastern Caribbean . Dock at ports within and beyond the U.S. and British Virgin Islands to discover some of the most exotic jewels of the tropical Atlantic. Sink your toes into the golden sand of Pinney's Beach on St. Kitts and Nevis, hike above the sea in Cabrits National Park on Dominica and marvel at contrasting cultures on the Dutch-French island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. Or head further north to Bermuda, whose azure waters and pink beaches are warmed year-round by the jet stream.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CALLS

Many of the best Memorial Day cruise destinations are interchangeable with places you might go over the Labor Day holiday. Memorial Day activities for the whole family, such as letting loose on CocoCay private in the Bahamas , are just as enticing in late May as they are in early September.

On the other hand, some important advantages present themselves to travelers who are able to cruise during the Memorial Day holiday, no matter who you're traveling with or where you sail from. If you're looking for Memorial Day weekend getaways for couples, keep in mind that school tends to be out during May. Therefore, while family-friendly destinations such as the Bahamas and Mexico will be on the crowded side, romantic escapes to St. Kitts and Nevis or even Bermuda might have more availability. Have a private, romantic moment at Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos, widely considered one of the best beaches in the Caribbean . Couples might also consider dipping into their paid time off hours, since extending a weekend cruise to include Thursday or Tuesday will reduce the number of other travelers able to take the trip.

None of which is to say that Memorial Day weekend cruises for families are a non-starter, particularly if you start shopping now. After determining how many days you can cruise and where you want to depart from, you can immediately begin browsing Memorial Day cruises. For instance, if you live in Atlanta, you can fly or drive your family to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami and take a 2 or 3-night cruise to family-friendly CocoCay private island.

As is the case for general long weekend travel or even trips you take over Labor Day, many of the best cruises are the most adventurous ones. Why not head beyond the comforts of Cancun to the lesser docked-at cruise ports of Belize? Whatever you do, allow your brainstorming and research to be fun. After all, Labor Day is meant to be a break from work, not create more of it.

GET AWAY THIS LABOR DAY

Puerto Rico Traditional Homes

The good news is that while Labor Day is a popular time to travel, possibilities for Labor Day weekend cruises are practically unlimited. If you combine this built-in advantage with smart strategic moves, like booking early and leaving from a convenient departure port, you'll manage to cruise stress-free at one of the busiest times of the year. Moreover, being open to a wide range of destinations — from top choices like the Bahamas and Cancun to secondary options like Puerto Rico — further sweetens the deal.

Assuming you can only take three days for your Labor Day cruise, most of the best cruises are going to be the ones closest to you. If you live in the Northeast, you might depart from New Jersey's Cape Liberty Cruise Port for Bermuda, which is the closest major cruise destination to the New York City area . For a trip like this, the journey is the destination — enjoy the cerulean horizon of the open Atlantic before frolicking on legendary Bermuda shores like Horseshoe Bay Beach.

Remember that flexibility opens up your options. One of the best last-minute tips, even if you plan to sail over Labor Day weekend, is to make yourself more available. This could be in terms of the number of nights. A five-night departure from Miami to the Bahamas is less likely to be fully booked during Labor Day than a shorter Bahamas cruise since many people are unable or unwilling to take off additional days. Likewise, if you can manage to fly to Houston or New York, being able to sail from Cape Liberty Cruise Port or Galveston invites additional possibilities and, depending on how full bookings are for your dates, better prices as well.

Boy Wearing his Snorkeling Mask, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Or, if you have some flexible time off work, you could choose to travel during a period adjacent to the Labor Day holiday for an even less stressful experience. Browse long weekend cruises during the last week of August or the second week of September, whether you stay close to the U.S. mainland with departures to Mexico and Belize or Grand Cayman and Puerto Rico, or take a longer cruise to Jamaica or even the Virgin Islands. Deserted Honeymoon Beach on St. Thomas beckons you, whether you're looking to relax on its sunkissed shores or get active with some snorkel gear.

PICK YOUR PORT

Couple Ready to go on a Tube Excursion. Belize City.

Proper planning is essential to making sure your trip goes off without a hitch, whether you happen to be shopping for long weekend cruises throughout the year or you've selected travel dates during the Labor or Memorial Day holiday. An important first step is choosing the right port. The majority of Americans are within a nonstop flight (or even a short drive) of Galveston, Texas , New York City , or Florida's popular Fort Lauderdale and Miami cruise terminals .

Galveston is a great choice for Labor Day weekend cruises. The most obvious reason for this is how close departing here situates you to the treasures of the Mexican Yucatan, though more distant options exist. Continue sailing south to Belize, whose otherworldly Great Blue Hole you have to see to believe, or head over to the shallows of Western Caribbean and immerse yourself in the history and culture like the ancient pyramids in Cozumel, Mexico.

If you live in the Northeast, you'll be pleased to know that many of the best cruises for shorter itineraries also depart from the New York City area. Leaving from Bayonne's Cape Liberty Cruise Port, it's easy to cruise toward the paradisiacal shores of Bermuda, whose coral-rich beaches are prone to giving off a pink color. You can also head farther south to the Bahamas, and even into the Caribbean Sea — as long as you can devote four or five nights to your cruise instead of just two or three. Explore Western and Central Caribbean destinations like Grand Cayman, or head east to Antigua and Barbuda, where the panoramic lookout from Shirley Heights will have you feeling on top of the world, literally.

Florida, which has two very popular ports of departure, is perhaps the best place to set off on Memorial Day weekend cruises. In addition to the fact that you'll be able to shop sailings from both Miami and Fort Lauderdale, both locations put you in a great position to explore the Caribbean Sea. For shorter trips, you'll likely stick to nearby islands like the Bahamas and Grand Cayman, though you might also be able to reach Jamaica or even the Virgin Islands if you have a few additional days to spare. In fact, Florida is arguably the optimal place to depart from on more adventurous cruises, since you start being close to the most exotic destinations in the Caribbean.

There's no better way to spend an extra day off than in beachside bliss. From once-in-a-lifetime thrills to the soothing sound of lapping, blue waves, setting sail to one of these beautiful destinations is sure to make your next travel vacation one for the books with a relaxing weekend getaway or one week cruise .

Though cruise booking generally opens several months in advance, deals on long weekend cruises may post just weeks or even days before departure. If you're flexible about when you sail, you'll enjoy some pretty sweet deals.

On the other hand, for Labor and Memorial Day weekend cruises, booking (or at least searching) early is often a fact of life. Begin shopping early in the year, and book as soon as you begin to notice availability decreasing.

Be smart when you get onboard to avoid undue stress. For example, eat before or after typical meal times, then enjoy less crowded common areas while most others are eating.

Are Short Cruises Worth it? (Tried and Tested, Pros and Cons)

If you’re considering taking a cruise you may be wondering if a short cruise is worth the price and if it’ll give you the true cruise experience.

I’ve been on over 50 cruises to date with a number of these being under 5 nights long.

I’ve had some brilliant short cruises – as well as some that I wouldn’t recommend.

In this post, we will be looking at what makes a short cruise worth it, or not.

Are Short Cruises Worth it?

There are many reasons why taking a short cruise is a good idea.

They’re cheap, easy, and can give you a taste of cruising. On the other hand, there are a few reasons why a short cruise may not be worth it for some passengers.

There’s less choice when it comes to shorter cruises and the onboard experience can be very different from a longer cruise.

I’ve been on short European and Caribbean itineraries and will talk about my experiences with both in this post.

I have enjoyed the majority of the short cruises that I’ve taken and there are definite benefits to short cruises – but there are a few things that you definitely need to be aware of.

Celebrity Silhouette Ship Blue Hull

What Counts as a ‘Short’ Cruise?

A cruise which is 5 nights or less would usually be classed as a short cruise.

3-night cruises are a very popular option – as are five-night cruises.

2 or 1-night cruises are occasionally available but these are less common.

Only 32% of cruises taken are five days or less. The most popular length of cruise is 7 nights.

average cruise duration 7 nights

Longer cruises are also popular – but the longer the cruise gets the less common they are, for obvious reasons.

I personally think the perfect cruise length is 10-14 days, it’s long enough to really get to know the ship and to settle into life on board, but it isn’t always crazily expensive.

Cheaper Short Cruises

One of the main reasons why people look to book short cruises is because they are cheaper than longer cruises.

While this is true it often isn’t as good a a deal as you would think. Although a ‘3-night’ cruise sounds like a lot once you take into account that the first and last day are just getting on and getting off the ship that really only leaves you with one cruising day.

This is, of course, the same for every cruise but it’s often overlooked when booking shorter cruises.

Price Per Night

The price per night on a shorter cruise is not normally as good value as on long cruises.

For a cruise line, the most difficult part of a cruise is turnaround day, where they have to get guests on board and also other guests off.

It’s much easier for the cruise line and crew to keep the same guests on board for longer.

For this reason, the price of a 14-night cruise is usually a little cheaper than two 7-night cruises. The same can be said for shorter cruises.

Shorter cruises may look like a great bargain but per night they can be more expensive. That said, if you have a limited budget a short cruise is a really good option.

emma cruises in front of p&o ventura

Party Atmosphere Onboard/Theme Cruises

It’s often the case that a short cruise has a party atmosphere and you’ll generally find a younger crowd onboard.

I’ve taken three cruises like this, the first was a three-night cruise with Celebrity and the second and third were three-night 90s theme cruises with Marella .

Marella Themed Cruises

I’d definitely recommend a themed cruise line for people who want to have a relaxed fun weekend. The majority of guests on board haven’t been on cruises before, but many find they love the ship and the weekend.

My last short cruise was 90’s themed, and I took five first-time cruisers with me.

Find out all about that cruise here:

Marella Cruises are all-inclusive and include alcoholic and soft drinks onboard.

To find out more about why I’d recommend a Marella cruise to families and young cruisers, check out this post:

Top 7 Reasons to Take a Cruise With Marella Cruises

Marella 90s Cruise Electric Sunsets

Non-themed Party Cruises

It isn’t just the themed cruises that tend to turn into party cruises.

If you book a cruise which is 3 nights, particularly if it’s over the weekend there is a chance that you’ll find many birthday parties and people celebrating onboard.

I took a 3-night cruise over a weekend with Celebrity Cruises to Amsterdam from the UK.

It was SO busy with people drinking in the bars on board that it was almost impossible to get a seat or get served at certain times. That said, if you book a weekend cruise this should be expected.

I really didn’t feel as though the cruise provided the true Celebrity experience but I did have a great time. I mostly booked the cruise to try the Celebrity Cruises food – and that did not disappoint!

It’s worth bearing in mind that short cruises, regardless of location or cruise line can feel like party cruises.

Celebrity are usually quite relaxed, but the weekend I spend onboard was anything but!

Our first ever cruise as a 2 night cruise to Guernsey, we already had a 14 night one booked a few months later and it felt like we were on a booze cruise, full of Hen and Stag Do’s. We vowed we’d never do a 2 night one again, weve only done 4 nights+ since then. We’re fairly young and like a good time, but it was far too much for us Emma Turner ( Facebook group member )

I did take a second cruise on Celebrity Silhouette which was VERY different from the first.

To learn how two cruises on the same cruise line, and same ship, can be so different, check out this video:

Is a Short Cruise a Good Way to Try a New Cruise Line?

A short cruise is a good way to try a new cruise line, but it’s important to remember that the experience onboard will likely not reflect a longer cruise.

It is important to remember that a short cruise on a cruise line may not provide you with a true representation of what that cruise line is usually like.

Short cruises are a great way to explore new cruise ships and try out elements like food and entertainment however some things will be different.

The 90s theme cruises I took were with Marella who included all-inclusive drinks as standard.

If the 90s cruise was the first Marella cruise that I had taken I may have thought that all Marella cruises were party cruises – because of the all-inclusive drinks. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

I took another Marella cruise straight after the Covid pandemic. There was lots of paperwork and vaccination requirements which made the organisation stressful, but once onboard we had a wonderful time and I never saw anyone drinking to excess.

Exploring The Ship

One of the best things to use a short cruise for is to explore a new cruise ship.

If you are unsure if you’d like a larger or smaller ship a short cruise can be a great way to find out. The physical ship itself remains the same regardless of the itinerary length!

If you’re trying a cruise line that is totally different from anything that you’ve cruised with before, a short cruise can be a good option.

If you’re used to American cruise lines and are considering a British line or an Italian line a short cruise can be a great way to get a taste of the major differences.

I booked a three-night Christmas Markets cruise with the British Cruiseline Ambassador in 2022. I had never sailed with them before, and was looking forward to finding out what they had to offer.

Although we made it onboard, that cruise was cancelled before we even set sail. It was a total disaster! Find out all about that “cruise that never was” here:

Short Cruises Mean You Can Pack Light

I am always pretty good at packing light, I’ve taken a two-week cruise with nothing but a carry-on cabin bag before, without too much trouble.

That said, it’s always nice not to have to pack too much. For a 3/5 night cruise, it is very easy to cruise with just a small bag, especially since shorter cruises often don’t have formal nights.

The 3 night Marella cruise I took was on board the Marella Explorer, and we actually had 16 drawers in our inside cabin – 16!

We only had 3 days’ worth of clothes so could have realistically spread out our clothes across all 16 drawers if we wanted to.. .

Packing light is not only a lot easier but it can also save you a lot of money. If you are flying to the embarkation port you may not need to pay extra for hold luggage on the plane.

Less Choice of Cruising Time

Short cruises tend to be for fixed dates and it’s not possible to choose other dates.

For the majority of cruises, the cruise will be repeated over and over so if you need to cruise a week later or a week earlier you can often do this without changing the itinerary.

A good example of this is the MSC cruise ships that cruise the Mediterranean. The ships repeat the same 7-night cruise over and over again for most of the year .

This gives you lots of flexibility to choose your cruise dates.

Emma cruises and Arvia

Mid Week/Weekend Itineraries

Short cruises tend to be less frequent. This can mean that if you want to do a cruise of a certain length you are extremely limited to only a few cruises per year.

Cruises that cruise over the weekend are incredibly sought after compared to mid-week cruises, so the prices of these are usually higher.

Short itineraries often happen between long itineraries – for example, if a cruise ship has been doing Eastern Caribbean cruises but changes to do a Western itinerary – there may be a smaller cruise in between which allows the ship to get into the new schedule.

It isn’t in the cruise line’s interest to have a ship empty for any period, so even if it is just a few days the ship will be filled and an itinerary sold.

On Occasion, There Will be no Drinks Packages or Other Offers

On some cruise lines, there are restrictions where drinks packages can only be purchased for cruises over a certain length.

On others who do offer drinks packages, these are usually more expensive per day than they would be on a longer cruise.

Some drinks packages for P&O Cruises are only available on cruises 5 days or longer in length

Drinks Packages are only available on cruises of 5 nights or longer, and while some of our Short Breaks are 5 nights, most are 4 nights and under. But it’s still great value to pay as you go. P&O Cruises

Many cruise lines are really trying to remove the party reputation of short cruises. As a result, they don’t sell drink packages on short cruises – to discourage drinking to excess.

This does depend a lot on the location of the cruise, cruises in the Caribbean tend to have a more laid-back party atmosphere than those in most of Europe.

emma cruises in olive grove restaurant on P&O's Iona

Other Perks May be Unavailable

You may find on a short cruise that other extras, found on longer cruises are missing.

These may just be small things like no snacks in the bars or lounges and no welcome drinks – but if you’re used to cruising on long itineraries the difference is noticeable.

I don’t know if it’s still the same, but a while ago we found some of the little extras, like nibbles with drinks and quite a few other things were missing. False economy as many people use these cruises to see what it’s like. There were some new people on our dining table and we’d spend a lot of the time saying “it’s not usually like this “. We sailed with P&O. Kimberly Moore.

There may also be other perks which are for cruises only over a certain length.

For example, P&O cruises offer a coach transfer with some of their fares, however, this isn’t added to cruises less than 5 nights long.

It isn’t normally a big deal but just something to be aware of and look out for.

Trying New Cabin Grades

Upgrading your cabin.

On the 3-night Celebrity cruise I took, I actually decided to book a balcony cabin. I am often in an inside cabin or outside if I am feeling lucky.

To be able to cruise in a balcony is a real treat. Due to the fact that the cruise was so cheap, it wasn’t much more expensive to upgrade to a balcony – so I did.

If you are used to inside cabins I would suggest doing the same – but be aware that it can be quite hard to convince yourself to go back to an inside cabin once you’ve had a balcony!

I have managed it since, but there is nothing quite like having a balcony to watch a sail in or sail away.

norwegian fjord cruise view from balcony emma cruises in geiranger

Downgrading Your Cabin

On the other hand, a short cruise does provide you the opportunity to cruise in a cheaper cabin than one that you would normally book.

I’ve shared an inside cabin with my brother and parents on a short cruise. I wouldn’t like to share a cabin with 3 other people for too long – but for 3/5 nights I think it’s a great option.

Many cruise lines will have discounted prices for the third or fourth passengers in a cabin, so if you share the savings equally you can all have a discounted cruise fare.

Shorter Cruises Give You More Chances to Cruise

Without taking short cruises I wouldn’t be able to cruise as much as I do.

Short cruises allow you to really make the most out of your annual leave and you can take advantage of things like public holidays.

When you use public holidays as an opportunity to cruise, it isn’t possible to cruise to exotic faraway destinations in a few days – but it’s a great break from everyday life.

The more forward planning you do the better the chance that you’ll be able to plan your cruises well and require the minimum amount of time off work.

On disembarkation day you can realistically expect to be off the ship by 9 am so in some circumstances you can actually take a half-day or head back to work!

This might not feel that great at the time but if it means you can cruise more in the future by saving your annual leave it can be a great option.

Disembarkation day is usually pretty sad anyway.

A Short Cruise Doesn’t Have to Mean Limited Ports

You may think that by taking a short cruise you will be missing out on ports that you may have otherwise visited.

It’s important to remember that longer cruises may have more sea days than shorter cruises and it is actually possible to pick a cruise that includes more than one port per day.

I took a short cruise with Celestyal Cruises. The cruise was 4 nights long and we visited a whopping 7 ports! 7 ports in 4 nights is almost unheard of within the cruise industry – but this is what Celestyal specialises in.

Celestyal are a Greek cruise line and if you are cruising to Greece I’d strongly recommend them. It’s the best way to be surrounded by Greek people, culture and food.

One Night Cruises are Occasionally Possible

Believe it or not, it is possible to take a one-night cruise although whether this really counts as a cruise or not is up to you.

The majority of large American cruise lines don’t do one-night cruises but some small British cruise lines like Fred Olsen or Ambassador.

A one-night Fred Olsen cruise will only set you back around $150 which is a bargain when you consider that the cruise includes your accommodation and meals.

Fred Olsen does have small, old traditional ships so they may not provide the cruising experience that many are used to. These one-night cruises are also only from the UK.

I took a longer cruise with Fred Olsen “In search of the Northern Lights.” Find out all about sailing with a traditional cruise line like Fred Olsen here:

Where do You Find Short Cruises?

When on almost any cruise line or travel agent website you will be able to filter your cruise search for cruises of a short duration.

Flexibility is Key

The key to finding a good short cruise is to either be flexible with dates or be flexible with the location of your cruise.

Sometimes cruises may start in one port and finish in another, which can cause logistical problems.

On the website, you can search by number of nights and also by cruise line. If you did want to cruise at a specific time with a specific line you would have to be flexible about the itinerary.

Similarly, if you wanted to cruise to a specific place on a short cruise you would probably have to be flexible when it comes to the cruise line.

My parents took a short, five-night out-of-season cruise on MSC Seaview. This was sailing from, and returning to Marseilles in France. It cost £226 – including gratuities! They also got a free upgrade to a balcony cabin for that price .

They were in France anyway visiting friends, so it was easy to just add this quick cruise into their schedule.

The great about short cruises is they give you the opportunity to try something new!

Would I Recommend Short Cruises?

A short cruise can be a brilliant way to try out a new cruise ship or cruise line. Short cruises are often very affordable and are able to fit around the rest of your life because they are so short.

That said, any short cruise shouldn’t be taken as a representation of a longer cruise with that cruise line.

Internet Package discounts on board

Cool Cruiser

I know that you can upgrade your "free" internet minutes onboard, and that it is best to wait till the second day of the cruise before logging in - thanks to all the posters on this board.  What I want to know is that are better discounts offered as the cruise progresses?

For our 3/27/2022 cruise on NCL Bliss, we had 150 "free" internet minutes each as one of the perks. For day 1 & 2, we can upgrade for $110 for one device. From day 2 onward, $90 to upgrade. If you have not used your minutes, you can upgrade from the app at any time. If you have, the upgrade option disappeared from your app starting on day 2 and you have to do the upgrade at the internet cafe.

"not used your minutes" at all? or "not used up all your minutes"?

2 minutes ago, mkkao924 said: "not used your minutes" at all? or "not used up all your minutes"?

When the upgrade option "disappear" on day 2, person 1 used less than 30 minutes out of the 150. Person 2 did not use any minutes till day 6 and the upgrade option (at $90) was on the app till then.  Did not check exactly when the upgrade option dropped off on person 2's app.

But does this represent a true discount or just that you're buying fewer internet days since it's already Day 3+?

On my last 7 day cruise, the upgrade cost was <$100.  On this 10 day it's something like $175.  Someone explained the math previously so it makes sense but still seems like a lot of money.  But I need to be in touch with work so I won't really have a choice and will just budget it in.

someone needs to explain the math to me.

I upgraded (precruise) the 150 FAS minutes to the premium unlimited on a 7 day cruise in May for $179.93. That is approx. $25.70 per day. I have a 12 night booked on getaway for January. The FAS promo is 300 minutes per person on that one. So double the 7 night minutes free. HOWEVER, the 12 night to upgrade to the premium unlimited is $334.88. That is approx. $27.91 per day.  Help me with that math. double minutes- less than double amount of cruising days, but HIGHER per day upgrading cost.  Insane cost, really.

(and I have another 7 night booked in May 2023 with FAS 150 showing premium unlimited upgrade same $179.93 that I paid for the 7 night this year, so it isn't just an across the board increase. )

We really would prefer the streaming (especially me as I'm hard of hearing so I need closed captioned programming and there is none of that on cabin tvs- except sometimes the international CNN or FOX with horrible lag time and/or horrible captioners--maybe not actual people doing it just an app-- and frankly not what I want to watch to wind down at the end of the day)

The profit on wifi for NCL is irritatingly over-the-top in my opinion

Not sure where those numbers came from.  I did a 7 day sailing in December and the upgrade cost was something less than $100 (I don't remember precisely.)  For my next 10 day cruise, the upgrade cost is $174.90 ($224 for premium.)

Someone else will have the specifics but the calculation is based on the FAS package having a fixed value.  That is subtracted from the non-upgraded package cost for the overall price.

Can you upgrade before boarding, if you have the free wifi, or do you have to wait til you're onboard?

4 hours ago, Dopeyjoy said: Can you upgrade before boarding, if you have the free wifi, or do you have to wait til you're onboard?

You should see the upgrade options in the Explore and Plan section of the website for your cruise.  Or you could wait until you're onboard.  I'll do the latter as then I can apply OBC to the cost.

Thanks

The other question, if you’re an upper tier Latitudes member, you get 15% off the internet packages.  Is that combinable with the Free at Sea discounts?

1 hour ago, graphicguy said: The other question, if you’re an upper tier Latitudes member, you get 15% off the internet packages.  Is that combinable with the Free at Sea discounts?

I believe not.  When I look at my internet upgrade, it doesn't show the 15% Platinum discount I should receive.  The odd part is I've tried to add other Internet packages (not upgrading from FAS, just to see if it works) and it doesn't.  So not sure whether it would reflect if you called NCL to add or did it onboard but it doesn't seem to reflect online.

mking8288

@graphicguy  - iCafe's upgrades can no longer be stacked or combined to maximize Latitudes discounts that otherwise are valid - unless it's charged at the full retail prices, not on the Getaway nor the Joy recently (20% for being Sapphire would've been nice, huh.)  Just upgrade first, onboard using NR OBC on Day 1 - do not use any of the available 150 airtime minutes.  There are still conflicting reports depending on CC'ers and the ship s/he sailed on, as to whether you are charged one day less if you do the upgrade or conversion to unlimited after midnight as that's technically Day #2 then.

I upgrade my plan to unlimited on a 7 nighters for the duration, charged about $110 for the difference.  DW's "free" 150 minutes remained available & usable - that can be registered and used on a different device, or shared with someone else.

NCL changed the rules of the games on it as we emerge from the 😷  pandemic ... it is what it is.   😠

Mrs. M now just "spend" less duty-free shopping since her allocation of OBC has been slashed as a indirect result, to keep her busy on the unlimited plan.

I used to be “up” on all of NCL’s policies.  Now?  Not so much!  Too many rule changes, too much time has passed.

Also checking to see if the Latitudes excursion discounts can be combines with the $50 excursion credit.

Haha

Does anyone know if it is possible to swap the free minutes for one  of the Unlimited Social Media Wi-Fi plans?

Yes, it can.  I just booked three excursions and it took off an additional 10%.

Best cruises from Florida: Our top 9 trips from the Sunshine State

Megan duBois

Cruises from Florida are the most popular options for travelers who wish to sail from the United States. It was only this year that Miami was dethroned as the busiest cruise port in the world — replaced by rival Florida home port, Port Canaveral.

Not only do cruises from Florida allow you to see some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and Bahamas, but they also allow travelers to experience some of the biggest and best cruise ships sailing right now. The largest cruise ship afloat, Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas, sails from Port Canaveral; family-friendly rival Disney Wish, the newest Disney cruise ship in a decade, also home ports in Florida.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Families planning multigenerational getaways, couples seeking child-free vacations and groups of friends looking to have a good time can all find their perfect ship and itinerary departing from one of Florida's six departure ports.

To give you a taste of the diversity of options available from the Sunshine State, here are our picks for the best cruises from Florida.

Wonder of the Seas to the Western Caribbean

4 day cruise reddit

Wonder of the Seas , Royal Caribbean's flagship and the largest cruise ship in the world, departs weekly from Port Canaveral (the cruise port closest to Orlando). The ship sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries, stopping at tropical destinations like Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

While the islands offer plenty of fun in the sun, the ship itself is filled with tons of family-friendly activities. Siblings or parents and kids can race each other to the bottom of the twin waterslides, named Typhoon and Cyclone. If you prefer to stay dry, hop into the Ultimate Abyss tunnel slide, where riders will glide down 10 stories of darkness before bottoming out on the ship's Boardwalk.

Kids ages 6 months to 17 years old have their own hangouts with dedicated programming supervised by fun counselors. While the kids play with new friends, adults can veg out in the glass-encased Solarium, relaxing on padded loungers or in a bubbling hot tub.

When it's time to come together for a meal, you'll please all palates at The Mason Jar , one of Royal Caribbean's newest restaurants that highlights Southern comfort food. The menu teems with tasty dishes like fried chicken, gumbo and po'boys that will leave you completely satisfied. Brunch here comes with a side of live country music.

Freedom of the Seas to the Bahamas

4 day cruise reddit

Cruisers who are loyal to Royal Caribbean or those who want to test the waters with the brand without the commitment of a seven-night sailing can enjoy short, three-night sailings on Freedom of the Seas out of Miami.

The quickie voyages take you to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, and a day spent on Royal Caribbean's stunning island is reason enough to book this cruise. At this private Bahamian beach resort, cruisers can ride the slides at Thrill Water Park, rent a beachside cabana for a mix of shade and sun, or float about in a sheltered lagoon. A barbecue lunch is included, and passengers can utilize their onboard drink package.

The 4,635-passenger ship provides fun around every corner. Challenge one another to a round of minigolf, show off your skills on the FlowRider surf simulator or test your muscle on the rock climbing wall. Entertainment on Freedom of the Seas ranges from Royal Caribbean's iconic ice skating shows to live music in the pub. Pool parties, outdoor movies and laser tag are also included with your cruise fare.

With so much to do on board, plus the short sailing times, cruises on this ship can have a distinct party vibe. There's a reason that the College Party Cruise charter company uses Freedom of the Seas for its March spring break sailings.

No cruise is complete without great food, and this ship offers 11 different dining venues highlighting such cuisines as Italian, Mexican and Japanese.

Carnival Elation to the Bahamas

4 day cruise reddit

Carnival Elation is unique because it's the only ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville. Its four- and five-day sailings to the Bahamas stop at Nassau and a second destination that varies. Choose from cruises to Bimini, Freeport, Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays — the latter two are private beaches operated by the Carnival Corporation.

The 2,606-passenger cruise ship is one of Carnival Cruise Line 's smallest and oldest ships. Aboard the intimate vessel allows you to get to know the crew and other cruisers. Popular hangouts include Carnival's beloved Alchemy Bar, where you can order cocktails at a vintage pharmacy-themed bar.

For outdoor dining, head to Guy's Burger Joint, created by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. Order a loaded burger and perfectly golden-brown fries, then head to the Lido Deck near the pool for great people-watching.

Entertainment on this small ship is still plentiful. Cruisers can splash around at WaterWorks, the family-friendly water playground, or head up to the adults-only Serenity Retreat for a quieter experience. The Punchliner Comedy Club hosts a variety of comedians that will have kids and adults laughing throughout the night. Catch a live production in the main theater or sing along with the pianist at the popular Piano Bar.

Carnival Mardi Gras to the Eastern Caribbean

4 day cruise reddit

If you'd prefer to sample one of Carnival's newest and largest ships, you can sail from Port Canaveral on the line's Mardi Gras . Its Eastern Caribbean sailings visit island destinations like St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk. Mardi Gras' six- to eight-night itineraries provide a good mix of sea days at the start and end of the sailings.

The impressive ship is known for its party atmosphere, which is highlighted by an onboard zone themed to New Orleans' French Quarter. Here, passengers will find Emeril's Bistro 1396, an homage to NOLA's cuisine developed in partnership with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. Don't miss the Brass Magnolia and the Fortune Teller bars, which start hopping when the sun goes down.

The Ultimate Playground on the ship's top deck is where adrenaline junkies and sports lovers will want to hang out. You'll get all the thrills with a ride on BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, or take a lap around the elevated ropes course. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, minigolf and a full-size basketball court await.

Disney Magic to the Bahamas

4 day cruise reddit

When the summer of 2024 rolls around, Disney Magic will set sail from Disney Cruise Line 's newest home port in Florida, Fort Lauderdale. The ship's shorter three- and four-night Bahamian itineraries include a visit to Nassau and either Castaway Cay, Disney's stunning private island, or Lighthouse Point, Disney's newest island destination . Longer five-night sailings include a stop at both private beaches or a double dip at Castaway Cay, along with a day at Nassau.

Disney Magic is among Disney's smaller ships, but fans love it for its intimate size and fewer crowds. Beloved Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcome you aboard with hugs and photo ops throughout your sailing.

Guests rotate each night among the ship's three dining rooms, including Rapunzel's Royal Table — inspired by Disney's animated "Tangled." There's also Animator's Palate, an homage to Disney's animation studios. You'll have the same servers at all restaurants, so they get to know your family and your dining preferences. At night the Walt Disney Theater features Broadway-caliber shows, like "Tangled: The Musical."

Families looking for some time apart will love that Disney has an included kids club where younger cruisers can enjoy fun activities under the watchful eye of the ship's youth staff. The Oceaneer Club features themed areas like Andy's Room from "Toy Story" and Tinkerbell's home at Pixie Hollow. Kids can also take superhero lessons from Thor. The Oceaneer Lab offers baking classes inspired by "Ratatouille" and sessions where kids learn how to draw their favorite Disney characters.

Adults can use their free time to savor a meal at the adults-only Italian restaurant, Palo, or kick back in the ship's multiple bars and live music venues.

Prefer to sail on a newer Disney ship? Check out Disney Wish , with three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau.

Holland America's Rotterdam to the Southern Caribbean

Holland America is known for its elegant ships and longer itineraries, such as Rotterdam 's nine- to 16-night Southern Caribbean options out of Fort Lauderdale. The newest ship in the fleet, Rotterdam sails to Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and Half Moon Cay on nine-night voyages, while its longer 16-day sailings add on Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, and Key West.

With just 2,668 guests onboard, Rotterdam is homey and charming with a touch of luxury. The ship doubles down on live music; a live band plays all the rock hits at the Rolling Stone Rock Room, while an eight-piece band gets everyone on their feet when they play R&B favorites at B.B. King's Blues Club. For some daytime activity, the competition is on at the ship's pickleball courts , where cruisers can take lessons or play in tournaments against their shipmates.

Expect impeccable dining at specialty restaurants like Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French-inspired restaurant from Holland America's master chef Rudi Sodamin; Canaletto, an Italian bistro offering all of the classics; and Tamarind, where diners can sample regional dishes from China, Japan and Southeast Asia. For daytime snacks, don't miss the Dutch pancake bites called poffertjes or the French fries with peanut dipping sauce.

Norwegian Encore to the Eastern Caribbean

4 day cruise reddit

If you're looking for a weeklong cruise out of Miami, consider sailing on Norwegian Encore to the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas and Tortola. Each island offers spectacular sandy beaches that give way to sparkling blue waters, plus options for water sports, museum visits and hikes to the top of lush mountaintops.

The itinerary also includes a stop at Norwegian Cruise Line 's private island, Great Stirrup Cay. There you can enjoy a relaxing beach day, where all you have to worry about is getting back to the ship on time from the tender dock.

On board the ship, zip around the Encore Speedway in a go-kart, play laser tag in an Atlantis-themed arena, splash around the AquaPark or experience virtual reality games inside the Galaxy Pavilion. For a calmer diversion, purchase a pass to the Vibe Beach Club, an adults-only retreat with lounge chairs, umbrellas and specialty food and drinks. The pass is good for the entire cruise, so you can come and go as you please.

There's a wide range of dining options, including complimentary and extra-charge restaurants. Belly up to the Local Bar and Grill for classic pub dishes and cocktails on tap. If you're willing to pay extra for a meal, Q Texas Smokehouse is worth a stop. The a la carte restaurant serves authentic Texas-style barbecue and all the classic sides. After dinner service, the restaurant turns into a country dance club with a live band and an open dance floor.

Celebrity Apex to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

4 day cruise reddit

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex sets sail from Fort Lauderdale to some of the most picturesque islands in the Caribbean. From November 2023 through April 2024, Apex will offer weeklong sailings to Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic. Two sea days give you time to relax and have fun on the ship.

What makes this itinerary special is that it features later all-aboard times in San Juan and St. Maarten, allowing guests to see the islands as they come alive in the sunset glow.

Celebrity Apex is part of Celebrity Cruises ' Edge class of ships, with standout features like high-end design and modern touches. One of Apex's highlights is the Magic Carpet, a suspended lounge that hangs off the side of the ship. When it's positioned by the pool deck, you can stop in to sip cocktails; when it's at water level, it serves as a platform for easy boarding of tender boats.

There are lots of chic spots to chill with your travel companions. Savor some kebabs or a flatbread pizza among live plants in the ship's Rooftop Garden, then watch the sun sink into the sea at the aptly named Sunset Bar. Submerge yourself in a martini-shaped hot tub out on the pool deck or enjoy a dip on a rainy day in the covered adults-only Solarium.

With 29 different food and beverage options on Apex, cruisers will never be bored at meal times. Specialty dining includes Le Grand Bistro, themed after a traditional Parisian boulangerie-patisserie, and the Eden Restaurant, with its tasting menu of international dishes.

If you don't want to spend extra money on food, stick with the ship's four themed main dining rooms and the Mast Grill, which serves juicy burgers and hearty salads. The Oceanview Cafe serves made-to-order breakfast and lunch offerings, while dinner features a rotating menu with international flair.

Head to The Manor for comedy and drag shows, plus late-night revelry. Don't miss Virgin's hyped-up Scarlet Night, which culminates in an epic pool party.

All of the table-service restaurants on Scarlet Lady are included in your cruise fare. You won't find a traditional main dining room. To secure your preferred mealtimes, book dinner reservations through the Virgin Voyages app as soon as you can. Restaurants that are not to be missed include Extra Virgin for Italian fare; The Wake, the fine-dining steakhouse; and Gunbae, the Korean barbecue restaurant where you start your meal with a drinking game.

Bottom line

Answered: What Is a Good Price for a Cruise?

Looking for what is a good price on a cruise? We have you covered whether you are sailing to the Caribbean, Alaska, or the Mediterranean.

When it comes to how much a cruise should cost, many people are surprised that the amount you pay can vary widely. Unlike a domestic flight, where the experience is essentially the same across any airline you take, your experience on the cruise can vary widely. And each of those factors can impact what makes a good deal and what’s a high price.

In other words, nailing down exactly what is a “good” price for a cruise a little more difficult than you would think at first glance. Even so, we can give you a pretty good idea.

So what can cause a cruise price to vary so dramatically? There are a number of factors that make a big difference in what you’ll pay…

Major Factors in Finding a Good Price for a Cruise

A pool deck on a sunny cruise ship

Numerous factors go into what you pay for your cruise, but here are what we see as having the biggest impact on getting a good price.

Date of Sailing Perhaps the biggest factor in what you pay for your cruise isn’t whether you find a sale or even which cruise line you pick. Instead, it’s when you sail.

Cruises sail 365 days a year. Want to sail in January? July? A cruise for Christmas or your birthday? There are trips heading out to sea and returning no matter the time of year. However, the prices for these cruises — even if they are the exact same itinerary — will vary widely.

It can be that a trip sailing during the off-season can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars less than sailing during the peak season. As a rule of thumb, if school is out then prices are considerably more expensive than when school is in session. So if you can sail in months like January or April or October, you’ll pay a lot less than if you book a trip for the summer.

Cruise Line When it comes to what you pay for your trip, we like to think of cruise lines like car brands. There are some cruise lines that cater to more passengers with lower prices and broader appeal, just like General Motors or Toyota. Then some cruise lines focus on a higher-end experience catering to a different clientele, similar to Mercedes or Range Rover.

As a result, what is a good price will depend on the cruise line. For example, you can assume that a Disney cruise will be much more expensive than a similar route on Carnival, however, it’s also a different experience on the ship.

Cruise Ship Just like the cruise line, the ship you sail can also make a difference in what’s a good price for your trip. Newer ships offer the latest and greatest and there can be a dramatic onboard difference between ships built in the past few years and those built more than a decade ago.

Of course, you’d expect to pay more for a nicer, newer hotel. It’s the same principle for a cruise ship. Newer ships often have higher prices. Older ships generally allow you to sail for less money. The price difference isn’t as dramatic as you’ll see between sailing during the high season and low season, but it can still make a difference.

Itinerary (Days Sailed and Route) Want a cheaper cruise? Sail a shorter trip. It’s obvious, but it is something that makes it more difficult to say what a good price is for a trip. After all, someone might pay more money for a trip, but have it be a longer cruise — providing more value than a shorter trip that’s more expensive on a per-day basis.

As well, different itineraries and regions can see varied costs. In general, it’s a bit pricier to sail Alaska than to sail to the Caribbean, all other things equal.

Cabin Type Finally, even on the same ship the price one passenger pays compared to another can vary widely. Want to get the absolute cheapest price? Go for an interior cabin. These rooms are small, don’t have any windows, but still get you on the ship without breaking the bank.

Balcony cabins and suites offer a much nicer experience, but also have a higher price tag attached.

The prices you see advertised for sale are always for the lowest-tier interior cabin. That’s what we also use for the pricing below. However, if you’re wanting a balcony cabin then cruises with the best interior prices should also have good balcony prices as well.

Below, we give you some ballpark figures for what is a good price for a cruise based on recent pricing.

All prices are based on a per person basis, for an interior cabin. Note that this only includes cruise fare. Taxes and port fees will mean a higher price.

Caribbean Cruise Good Price: $75 per night ($525 for a 7-Night Trip)

Caribbean island view

Think of a cruise and you likely picture a trip island-hopping the Caribbean, complete with blue water, white sand, and gorgeous sunshine. And trips to this area of the world are the most numerous in the world, with millions of passengers each year taking a trip everywhere from The Bahamas to Mexico and all points in between.

The good news is that these trips are highly affordable. You can find cruises sailing to the area starting at $125 per person in some cases, although prices that low will only be on shorter cruises.

Prices will vary widely based on length of cruise, cruise line, and when you sail. In general, however, a good value is any trip running below $75 per night, per person — or about $525 for a week-long cruise.

Can you find cruises that are less expensive than this? Absolutely. We found some running as little as $50 per night. However, as a general guide, the trips running less than $75 per night per person offer a good price.

Keep in mind that you’re unlikely to find these sorts of rates during the peak summer season, and you won’t be on the newest ships. As well, this is the price for only cruise fare. Taxes and port fees can add a considerable amount to your vacation ($100-$200 per person).

Alaskan Cruise Good Price: $100 per night ($700 for a 7-Night Trip)

View of deck of a ship on an Alaskan cruise

If Caribbean cruises are most popular, it might be Alaskan cruises that are the most unique. Alaska is such a beautiful, yet remote destination. In fact, it is hard to explore unless you have a small plane… or you can take a cruise.

Given the landscape of Alaska, many spots to explore are right near the coast giving you not only amazing views, but also better access via the water.

Historically, Alaska cruises tend to be pricier than their Caribbean counterparts. This is due in part to the fact they only sail part of the year. Instead of setting out year-round, the cruise season to this part of the world runs from May through September. That means it is usually more difficult to find cheaper deals.

If you’re taking a trip to Alaska, then watch for prices that run less than $100 per night per person. You can often find these early in the season (May) and later in the season (September).

Of course, balcony cabins are popular on these trips as it gives you your own private view, but will come with a higher price tag.

One other thing to watch — you can often find cruises for much less than $100 per night to Alaska, but they are not round trip. Several cruise lines offer “northbound” and “southbound” cruises, with each leg being seven days. These cruises can run much cheaper each way, but just know that you have to combine two in order to make it back to your starting port.

Mediterranean Cruise Good Price: $85 per night ($595 for a 7-Night Trip)

Scene of Europe

Perhaps no cruise on earth gives you the chance to take in as much culture and history as a trip around the Mediterranean. France, Spain, Italy, and more… you can see them all on a single trip. And since the Mediterranean was such an important body of water historically, many of Europe’s great cities sit right near the sea, giving access via a cruise ship.

In fact, if you’re wanting to see a sample of the continent in a short amount of time, then we can think of no better way than with a cruise.

What’s more is that the price of a European cruise doesn’t have to break the bank. You can find many of them starting for under $400 per person for a seven-night trip, even during the summer. However, this does typically mean sailing an older ship.

As for a good price on a European cruise, there will be some variation based on the number itineraries that are offered. Still, trips priced under $85 per day — or around $600 for a week-long cruise — are what we would consider to be a good deal.

Of course, remember this is for an interior cabin on a per-person basis. As well, things like taxes, fees, and gratuities would be extra.

Remember: The Total Cruise Will Cost Much More!

While we’ve offered up a price per day for each of these three major cruise itineraries, keep in mind that the total you pay will likely be higher. The figures provided above are to give you an idea of a good price base on how cruise lines advertise fares.

Each cruise will also see taxes and port fees added on, which can run hundreds of dollars. Gratuities will also add to the amount you pay.

As well, we are offering up this guideline for a good price based on the per person fare for an interior room to help you compare with the prices you might see when shopping around online. Choosing a higher-grade cabin, like a balcony, will mean a higher price.

Finally, keep in mind that the best deals on cruises are likely to come off-season and with older ships. It may be that your schedule or the ship you want to sail means you have to pay a little more.

$49-a-day standby cruise offer that includes Whittier sailings could be a dream, or a nightmare

4 day cruise reddit

For last-minute adventure seekers or those who love a good deal, Holland America Line has introduced a unique Standby List Program , offering travelers the chance to cruise for as little as $49 a day.

The concept is simple: Travelers add their names to a standby list for a specific itinerary, and if unsold rooms become available, they’ll be notified two to seven days before departure.

Cruise ships participating in the program depart from Whittier, Alaska; Seattle; San Diego; Boston; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Montreal; Quebec City; and Vancouver, B.C.

Although the program offers huge savings, it has a few catches. Standby passengers do not have control over their stateroom category, must be ready to embark on short notice and must be prepared for the possibility of not being selected (in which case they’ll receive a full refund). Young families are also excluded, because the fares are available only to those 21 and older.

“Travelers who want to benefit from a standby fare should keep in mind that once confirmed, Holland America Line assigns their room,” Rob Clabbers, founder and president of the agency Q Cruise + Travel, told Condé Nast Traveler . “While that might result in savings, it means travelers may end up in the last remaining and likely less preferred location — above a theater or night club (or) all the way forward or aft. While this may work for some, it is definitely not recommended for those who fear seasickness, have mobility issues, would like to be close to travel companions, (or) want to be near or away from elevators,” he said.

However, the payoff could be significant for those willing to roll the dice, especially for group travelers. The third and fourth guests in a stateroom can sail almost for free, paying only taxes and fees.

Despite the uncertainties, the allure of deeply discounted fares and the excitement of a last-minute adventure may be enough to entice daring travelers. As one Reddit user put it, “I feel like (a) 7-day notice for going to Hawaii is the kind of anxiety I need in my life.”

Princess Cruises' Star Princess ship delayed, 9 sailings canceled

4 day cruise reddit

Travelers will have to wait longer than planned to sail on Princess Cruises’ upcoming ship.

The delivery of Star Princess, which was set to debut next summer, will be pushed back by about two months. The cruise line said the delay was a “mutual” decision with shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings,” Princess said in a news release .

Guests whose cruises are impacted will be able to rebook on any Princess ship and, depending on which sailing they pick, receive future cruise and onboard credits. They will also be able to opt for a full refund of their fare instead.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Princess Cruises President John Padgett said in the release.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The ship’s new inaugural itineraries will include 11 and seven-day Mediterranean cruises on Oct. 4 and 15, 2025, respectively. Those will be followed by a two-week transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 22, 2025.

Those sailings will be available to book on April 30.

Star Princess will be the second in the line’s Sphere Class. Sister ship Sun Princess was also delayed ahead of its launch earlier this year, with Princess citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard.

Live updates, widowed dad should not take girlfriend on annual father-daughter trip, reddit users insist.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Happy family on a road trip in their car

A Reddit user whose girlfriend objected to being left out of his annual father-daughter trip is completely right to exclude her, said other Reddit users and experts who spoke to Fox News Digital.

“AITA for not booking tickets for my [girlfriend] to come on holiday with me and my daughter?” asked Reddit user “Acrobatic-Agent-6532” in a Monday, April 29, post on Reddit’s “Am I the A–hole” (AITA) subreddit.

In the post, the man revealed that his girlfriend was extremely upset with him for planning his annual vacation with his 16-year-old daughter — something he’s done every year since she was born.

“We’ve carried on the tradition since her mother died as a way to remember her (we go to the same place during the same two weeks),” he wrote.

Last year, Acrobatic-Agent-6532 said his girlfriend was “completely fine” about the trip.

“She said she had no issue with it just being me and my daughter and it would be fine again in the future.”

This year, however, things were different.

After he told the girlfriend he’d booked the trip, “she completely freaked out, saying that I was entitled and selfish for not taking her as well.”

The man detailed, “I’ve tried to explain to her that this is a very personal event for me and my daughter ,  but she doesn’t seem to listen and keeps on telling me to book her tickets as well.”

He continued, “I’ve talked to my daughter about it, and she’s said she would rather it be just us two.”

Acrobatic-Agent-6532 said he regularly goes on vacations with the two of them — and that he does not use all of his time off on his daughter.

“Was I wrong for not booking tickets for my [girlfriend]?” he asked.

“Should I book her tickets as well?”

Father and two little girls roasting marshmallows at bonfire in a fall forest

In an email to Fox News Digital, the Reddit poster said he would not be booking his girlfriend a ticket for the trip.

A psychiatrist and social worker told Fox News Digital that it is completely reasonable for Acrobatic-Agent-6532 to want to continue an important tradition with his daughter — and that the trouble he’s going through right now could be a sign of a deeper issue with his relationship.

“The dad has clearly stated the purpose of this trip with his daughter to his current girlfriend, which seems more than appropriate not to include her. Honoring the role of her mother, who has passed away, is very personal and healing for them both,” Lisa Pion-Berlin, ACSW, of California, told Fox News Digital.

Pion-Berlin is CEO of Parents Anonymous, a self-help organization that aims to prevent child abuse .

These trips do not lessen or diminish the relationship between Acrobatic-Agent-6532 and his girlfriend, said Pion-Berlin.

A family roasting marshmallows by a fire pit in the forest near their country house

The girlfriend’s “negative reaction this year versus previously should be explored so that the air can be cleared, and everyone can understand each other’s feelings.”

“As a parent, [Acrobatic-Agent-6532] has defined what he needs to support his daughter and that priority is separate from their personal relationship and will not interfere with her developing a relationship with the daughter if this is important to each of them,” she also said.

Dr. Carole Lieberman, a California-based psychiatrist, told Fox News Digital that Acrobatic-Agent-6532 would be wrong to stop his annual tradition — and that his relationship with his girlfriend might be over .

“You may not realize it now, but this father-daughter time is so important to her mental health and is what will keep your daughter away from ‘bad boys’ in the future,” said Lieberman, the author of “Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them & How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets”

By taking his daughter on these trips, the father is “modeling what a loving relationship should be by keeping her mother ‘alive’ during these times.”

And while Acrobatic-Agent-6532 is upset by his girlfriend’s insistence on joining the trip, Lieberman said that this should be viewed positively.

“It has opened your eyes to the true character of your girlfriend,” said Lieberman.

Reddit users largely agreed that it was completely fine for Acrobatic-Agent-6532 to have his annual trip with his daughter.

On the AITA subreddit, people can reply to posts and indicate the poster is “NTA” (“Not the A–hole”), “YTA” (“You’re the A–hole”), “NAH” (“No A–holes Here”) or “ESH” (“Everyone Sucks Here”).

Users can “upvote” responses they think are helpful and “downvote” ones that are not.

“Your [girlfriend] is off her rocker,” said Reddit user “keephopealive4you” in the top-upvoted comment, addressing the comments directly to the father.

“She is the only entitled and selfish person here! She has already gotten vacations from you. This is a special time for you and your daughter … Your [girlfriend] needs to back off.”

Said a user named “Friendlily,” “You are her only parent left and I’m sure she needs this as much as or more than you.”

The person added that these trips will likely change in the future as the daughter grows up and moves out of the house.

“You also need to take this as the red flag it is with your [girlfriend] and have some serious conversations with her,” said the same commenter.

High school sports | six-run inning helps jserra softball cruise to win over esperanza in division 1 playoffs, jserra mixes small ball with extra-base hits in the cif southern section playoffs thursday.

4 day cruise reddit

The game was stopped in the sixth inning due to JSerra (16-13) having a 10-run lead after the fifth inning.

It was the first Division 1 playoff win in school history for JSerra. The Lions won two games in the Division 2 playoffs last season.

“We’ve come a long way in the last several years,” JSerra coach Katie Stith said. “It’s a testament to their hard work and the support we get in the program. There’s a lot more to come. We are raising the standard and these girls want to win.”

Esperanza (15-13) was the third-place representative from the Crestview League. The Aztecs were trying to win their first CIF-SS softball championship since 2021, when they took home the Division 1 title.

JSerra broke the game open in the fourth inning when the team batted around and scored six runs.

Reese Ferrel hit a RBI single to extend the Lions’ lead to 4-1.

Kaylee Layfield hit a two-run double and was driven in by a triple from Zena Edwards.

Mia Krueger hit a RBI single to left field to give JSerra an 8-1 lead.

Krueger, a Cal Baptist signee, led the JSerra offense by going 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs.

“I haven’t been doing so well all season but I was on today and it was pretty cool,” Krueger said. “Hitting is most definitely contagious, especially when the leaders and upperclassmen start it off and instill confidence in the rest of the team.”

JSerra’s offense displayed a good mix of small ball and big power hits. The Lions laid down five bunts and had six extra-base hits.

“We can run a little bit, so I like to put runners in motion to put pressure on the defense,” Stith said. “The right people are stepping up in the middle of the lineup to provide the long ball. When we are multifaceted like that, we are difficult to defend.”

Layfield went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Ferrel had three hits with two RBIs. Brooke Stephens had two hits with a triple and two runs scored.

The run support was plenty for JSerra’s freshman pitcher, Abby Ford, who allowed just three hits and one unearned run in six innings with three strikeouts.

Esperanza’s offense struggled against Ford. Madison Page had two hits including a double. Juliette Beltran had a RBI single for the Aztecs.

University of Florida signee Taylor Shumaker, a strong candidate for Orange County player of the year, went 0 for 2 with a walk.

“I have lots of respect for Taylor. We play against her in travel all the time,” Ford said. “I just tried to work around her in the best way possible.”

Shumaker ended her senior season with a .605 batting average and 18 home runs, just two shy of the county record.

“We basically just didn’t let her get anything close,” Krueger said of Shumaker. “She is probably the best hitter the area has ever seen and I’m surprised she didn’t take us yard.”

JSerra will play La Mirada on Tuesday in the first round at Glenn High.

The Lions lost to La Mirada 7-1 in the 1st Pitch Challenge Showcase on Feb. 10.

“It’s good that we’ve seen them because we know what we are going to get,” Stith said. “Division 1 is tough and I think anybody can beat anybody at any time. I’m confident in where our girls are. If we do what we need to do and not make the game too big, I think we will be competitive.”

  1. To my fellow cruisers who do 3 and 4-day cruise itineraries: Why?

MOD. To my fellow cruisers who do 3 and 4-day cruise itineraries: Why? I personally can only think of two reasons to do so: Quick, less expensive cruises to help rack up status quickly for a cruise line. Padding a longer cruise for a "back-to-back" cruise (say, a 3-day before a 7 or 10 day cruise). Maybe I lack vision.
