Geological riches, legendary street food, historic cities and endless tropical coast await in Vietnam.

While locals prefer to travel by motorbike, the best – and most scenic – way to see all Vietnam has to offer is by sea. Some of the country’s most visited destinations, like Halong Bay and Hoi An, as well as hidden gems, like the caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, are right on the coast. By opting for a cruise, you can spend your days exploring a former imperial city or the fascinating sand dunes of Mui Ne, then head back to the boat to sunbath or snorkel. No trip to Vietnam is complete without a taste of the legendary street food, so be sure to fuel your adventures with ample amounts of Vietnamese staples like pho and banh mi.

Highlights of Vietnam

Ha Long Bay emerald waters and pillars

Cruise Halong Bay’s emerald waters and pillars

Halong Bay’s iconic seascape – a wonderland of caves, coves and arches carved into jagged, tree-covered limestone pillars – is best explored by boat. Active types will want to get a closer look by kayak, which provides access to even more stunning scenery, such as caves and lagoons, accessible only through small tunnels.

Phong Nha Ke Bang cave of Vietnam

Uncover the caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Perhaps Vietnam’s best kept secret is the remarkable Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Spanning 885 square kilometres (550 square miles), this vast park was crowned a UNESCO World Heritage site for its 400 million-year-old limestone karst landscape, tropical forests, underground rivers and spectacular caves.

Soak up sun and history in Hoi An

A former Cham port town, Hoi An’s rich heritage is evident in its well-preserved architecture. Stroll past Chinese assembly halls, Japanese merchant houses and French colonial buildings scattered along narrow, atmospheric streets. Not nearly as chaotic as Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An is easy to walk around. Some of Vietnam’s best beaches and dive sites are also nearby.

Excursions and experiences

  • Your leader will guide you through a Hanoi ritual – join the locals and participate in laughing yoga, tai chi and other lakeside activities at the edge of the Old Quarter in the early morning.
  • Visit Vietnam’s incredible natural treasure, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, to explore the extensive Thien Duong Cave (Paradise Cave) and some of Asia’s oldest limestone.
  • Get a close-up snapshot of day-to-day life as a monk in Hue’s historic Thien Mu Pagoda, tucking into a tasty vegetarian lunch.
  • Gain eye-opening insight into the American-Vietnam War by visiting two important sights: the Khe Sanh Combat Base, where the bloodiest battle took place, and the Vinh Moc tunnels, which sheltered local communities during the war.
  • Learn about an age-old tradition with a pottery demonstration in Bau Truc, the oldest pottery village in South East Asia.

When a new form of tourism called cruise tourism emerges, it helps travelers have a variety of novel experiences while floating on the sea. Numerous amenities are integrated into Vietnam Yacht, which caters to all tourist needs, notably those of 5-star boats.

Some attractive utilities not to be missed are:

Coming to 5-star cruises, visitors have many opportunities to experience high-class luxury service at a reasonable price.

In addition, the cruise ship tour schedule in Vietnam is also highly appreciated. Each cruise will explore its own routes with many different attractions. But in general, they all bring visitors a new look that is also close to the natural beauty and rustic features of the Vietnamese people.

Traditional Vietnam junks float in Halong Bay, one of many sights you can experience on your luxury Seabourn Cruise

Seabourn began taking travelers to Vietnam shortly after the country re-opened to foreign tourism. The company’s intimate, nimble ships offer a comfortable and convenient way to explore this fascinating country, where independent travel is somewhat difficult.

Over the years Vietnam has formed the heart of a perennially popular cruise itinerary combining Vietnamese ports with calls in Thailand and Cambodia on voyages between  Singapore  and  Hong Kong .

Seabourn’s Vietnam itineraries explore both its ancient and more recent cultural and historic aspects. Seabourn’s ships can navigate the  Saigon River  right into the center of  Ho Chi Minh City , still fondly called Saigon by many of its residents. A short walk brings guests to the broad, Parisian-style boulevards of the city, teeming with rivers of motorbikes and minivans flowing past the impressive 19th-century French colonial landmarks such as the Independence Palace, the People’s Committee (Old City Hall), the Saigon Central Post Office and the Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral. More modern landmarks include the Reunification Museum and the War Remnants Museum, with exhibits documenting the brutal effects of the ‘American War’ on civilians. Other popular attractions for visitors include the Thien Hau Pagoda, the bustling  Binh Tay Market  and the towering Bitexco Financial skyscraper with a Saigon Skydeck on top. Night-time entertainment in HCMC includes folkloric music and dance at the legendary Rex Hotel and  elaborate water-puppet shows .  Two-day stays  allow guests to further explore such surrounding highlights as the wartime  Cu Chi Tunnels  and the fertile  Mekong River Delta . Adventure off the beaten path and take a 3-day,  mid-cruise journey to Angkor Wat: A UNESCO Partner Tour .

The central Vietnam port of  Da Nang  offers access to two  UNESCO World Heritage sites : northward over a mountain ridge lie the tombs and palaces of the ancient  Imperial City of Hue , the former Cham dynasty capital of Vietnam astride the Pearl River. In the venerable  Old City of Hoi An , a distinctive  wooden Chinese-style bridge  survives from its heyday as a  Chinese trading post . Today it is famous for the fine art offered in its galleries, the lightning-fast tailor shops that can fashion clothing within hours and the colorful open market. Not far away are the stone sculpture workshops of the  Marble Mountains  and lovely China Beach.

Halong Bay  is one of Vietnam’s most famous features, an expanse of the  emerald Gulf of Tonkin  festooned with thousands of fantastic  karstic limestone islands  topped by shaggy tropical vegetation. The surreal environment hosts a population of semi-nomadic fisher-folk living on sampans and trading in the nearby port of Haiphong. On your Halong Bay cruise visit the popular destination Cat Ba National Park  for the  sea kayak  and  junk tours  that course through the island maze. From Haiphong, a crowded highway leads to the nation’s capital at Hanoi, where visitors can visit the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, the  ancient One Pillar Pagoda , the notorious Hoa Lo Prison Museum and the serene Temple of Literature.

Seabourn guests regularly list our luxury cruise  to Halong Bay Vietnam as one of their most treasured travel memories, with colorful, memorable sights, fascinating cultural insights and friendly, welcoming people.

12 Reasons to do a Vietnam 🇻🇳 Red River Cruise with Pandaw

Jul 6, 2018 | 2

12 Reasons to do a Vietnam 🇻🇳 Red River Cruise with Pandaw

Vietnam Red River Cruise with Pandaw

By Heidi Sarna.

I recently returned from a wonderfully quirky 10-night Vietnam Red River cruise aboard Pandaw Cruises ‘ 32-passenger Angkor Pandaw , sailing some 650 kilometers from Halong Bay westerly towards Hanoi and beyond.

My bestie Rachael and I sailed along the Red River (or Song Hong) and its various tributaries, including the Black River (Song Da) and the Clear River (Song Lo).

The offbeat adventure was appealing and memorable in so many ways, including these 12 reasons to do a Vietnam Red River cruise.

Vietnam Red River Cruise

Heidi & Rachael’s Vietnam adventure!

1.  Two Days in Halong Bay.

The highlight of any visit to northern Vietnam is cruising around Halong Bay’s sea of limestone karsts that pop out of the bay like mushrooms. The ancient forest of crumbling mountain peaks feels otherworldly and prehistoric, especially when you kayak through the grottos and passages. It’s no wonder the area is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Pandaw knows where to go to avoid the mobs of other tourists that flock to Halong Bay. Sailing there at sunset is especially magical.

2.  The Local Food on a Vietnam Red River Cruise.

Angkor Pandaw’s Vietnamese chef and his staff prepared delicious fresh meals with lots of local ingredients, from banana leaf, pomelo (like grapefruit), lotus and cashew nuts to glass noodles and heaps of basil, mint and other greens. We were treated to the nation’s famous pho noodle soup and Vietnamese-style spring and summer rolls (there were western options too), and refreshing glasses of local Bia Hanoi and 333 beer whenever the mood struck.

3.  Glimpse into Village Life on a Vietnam Red River Cruise.

Our 10-night cruise comprised two days moving around Halong Bay and a day in frenetic Hanoi; the rest of the trip focused on visits to villages within walking distance or a short bus ride of where we were docked. These small towns would otherwise be hard to reach or unknown to most visitors.

With our guides we walked around neighborhoods specializing in trades still pursued the traditional way, from pottery to carved wooden furniture, noodles, baskets, knives and rice wine. Half the fun was interacting with locals along the way.

4.  Our Excellent Vietnamese Guides.

Duok, or Duke as he called himself for the benefit of the tourists, and Vu were a pair of 30-something Vietnamese guides with college degrees in tourism. They shared not only their deep knowledge of Vietnam’s history and culture, but also fascinating personal anecdotes that shed light on the country’s customs, from marriage to education and religion.

5.  The Vietnamese People are a Big Reason to do a Vietnam Red River Cruise.

Maybe because tourism still isn’t widespread outside of the major cities, the Vietnamese are warm and friendly to outsiders. In the villages, the locals smiled and waved to our group of 25, making us feel welcome. There was a mutually benign curiosity between us and them, which made it fun to take photos and selfies, with our guides often helping us to ask questions and communicate.

6.  A Rustic Boat in a Rustic Place.

It’s nice to travel to a place in a vessel that looks like it belongs there. The 32-passenger Angkor Pandaw , like the rest of the fleet, is made of teak wood, brass, and steel, and designed to recall an earlier era of Scottish-built steamers for Burma’s Irrawaddy Flotilla Company that in mid-1920s operated upwards of 600 boats. They’re not white or shiny or covered in strings of lights, they’re comfortable, unassuming, utilitarian, atmospheric and solidly made.

7.  The Other Passengers on a Vietnam Red River Cruise.

Pandaw attracts an international lot from all over the world, especially the UK, Australia and North America. They’re an adventurous, well-traveled group of free thinkers who seek out the off-beat.

Many Pandaw passengers could afford a more luxurious and mainstream experience, but they choose Pandaw’s quirky river cruises precisely because they are not predictable or cookie-cutter. Many return to Pandaw again and again.

8.  The Slow Pace of River Travel.

Seeing the landscape gradually unfold from the decks of a river boat, especially at sunrise and sunset, is a special way to travel.

The true nature of a country reveals itself in the life along the riverbanks. In northern Vietnam, it’s largely a story of agriculture and industry — green fields of rice, bananas, sweet potatoes, cassava and corn, are dotted with red brick kilns with tall chimneys. Ship builders along the river banks are ubiquitous and so are their rusty red cargo barges that motor up and down the rivers carrying sand, stones, coal and fuel, often passing within a few feet of the Angkor Pandaw.

9.  The Convenience of  a Vietnam Red River Cruise.

The appeal of cruises big and small is the inherent convenience of unpacking once while you travel to many different places. On small ships like Pandaw, the ease is multiplied. You’ll appreciate never having to queue for anything.

Getting on and off the boat takes just a few moments and the vessels are able to tie up to a tree or anchor just about anywhere. Further, just about everything is included in the fares — the cozy cabin, excursions, spirits, beer and transfers.

10.  The Calm & Quiet of a Vietnam Red River Cruise.

By design, there is no loud music, no TVs in the cabins, and few announcements.

Each day takes on a relaxing rhythm, punctuated by causal open-seating mealtime, one or two half-day excursions, and time for lounging on a deck chair chatting with new friends or soaking up the scenery and taking photos. Movies with a connection to the itinerary are frequently shown after dinner, but otherwise it’s a night cap or two before heading off to sleep.

11.  Non-Commercial Vibe of a Vietnam Red River Cruise.

It was so nice that this trip was not about shopping and buying stuff, whether on board or in the stops.

There were a few places to browse and buy (Hanoi and the pottery village), but otherwise, the off-beat places we visited don’t see many tourists and so souvenir shops and touts are pretty non-existent.

Vietnam Red River Cruise

We visited quiet villages and rarely encountered other tourists. * Photo: Heidi Sarna

12.  The Quirkiness of a Vietnam Red River Cruise.

Pandaw is different — the look of the boats, the historical backstory, the itineraries and the travelers it attracts.

This is a line that marches to the beat of its own drummer, and I love their tune.

Caveats of a Vietnam Red River Cruise:    The Heat: Cruising in late April or May in northern Vietnam means it will be very hot in the afternoons — I’m talking up to 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius). The Barges & Factories: Vietnam is a country bustling and brimming with industry and it’s obvious with the many barges motoring up and down the rivers, and the factories and shipyards that line the riverbanks in some areas.

The marine tourism sector, which is a top priority of the country’s sea economy Master Plan 2030-45, has been struggling to attract investment in cruise harbours and coastal infrastructure to lure globally branded cruise fleets connected with worldwide destinations. Cruise services are one of the key products in building marine tourism as a core part of the ‘blue sea economy’ plan.

The coast of Vietnam is ranked the 33rd in the world. This nation ranks in the top 12 countries for the most beautiful bays in the world including Halong, Lan Ha, Lang Co and Nha Trang. Although Vietnam has 3,260 km of coastline, 125 world- class beautiful beaches, 3000 islands, and 28 coastal cities, it still does not have a cruise ship fleet. Vietnam must have cruise ships along the coast and to carry passengers from Vietnam to other countries.

Making a 67.3 per cent share of the country’s total tourism revenue, a top favourite ocean destination among 156 beach nations, cruise tourism in Vietnam has not been promoted properly so far. The number of cruise tourists accounts for only 2-3% of the total number of international visitors to Vietnam.

Lux Group ’s Founder and CEO Pham Ha emphasized that it is necessary to attract investors to invest in cruise ships and yachts with Vietnamese nationality that run along the coast. Be the first to cruise along Vietnamese coast in 2025!

Lux Cruises (www.lux-cruises.com) is a member of Lux Group (www.luxgroup.vn), an award-winning Asian travel and hospitality group with more than 20 years delivering authentic and unique experiences.

Lux Cruises is a combination of 6 cruises, tenders, speedboats under two brands, Emperor Cruises ( www.emperorcruises.com ) and Heritage Cruises ( www.heritagecruises.com ), operating in the most scenic bays and archipelagos of Vietnam: Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay (Cat Ba Archipelago), Nha Trang Bay and Phu Quoc Archipelago.

“Our vision is to start our first expeditions on the Gulf of Tonkin and further expand between Hanoi Capital and Halong Bay on the Red River and its tributaries, along the coastline of Vietnam, on the Mekong River and to other Southeast Asia countries” said Pham Ha “Lux Group Is Developing A Fleet Of Two Luxury Vessels in 2025 if you interest in our iconic products and investment opportunities, visit our Vietnam Pavillon at ITB Berlin 2023”.

“The Lux Yacht Collection represents the next chapter of our long history of industry-leading innovation, and a milestone moment for our company as we continue to capitalize on new opportunities.” says Lux Group Founder and CEO Pham Ha.

Details surrounding the first superyacht SPIRIT and PRESIDENT of the LUX Yacht Collection reveal about 99 suites and duplex suites, a spa, a salon, several bars/restaurants, a gym, a huge infinity swimming pool, and an outdoor movie theater. To ensure guests’ needs are attended to, there will be enough staff to assist them with personalized services.

Havana Syndrome in Vietnam: Possible Russian role in attack on Americans, according to new evidence

By Brit McCandless Farmer

March 31, 2024 / 7:43 PM EDT / CBS News

U.S. officials in Vietnam were injured in a Havana Syndrome style attack ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris's 2021 trip to Hanoi . Now, new evidence suggests Russia may have been involved — and that it may have been the Vietnamese themselves who were given technology that could have caused the injuries.

At the time, the U.S. embassy in Hanoi announced that a possible "anomalous health incident," the federal government's term for so-called Havana Syndrome attacks, was slowing Harris's arrival in Vietnam. 60 Minutes has learned that 11 people reported being struck in separate incidents before Harris entered the country: two people who were officials at the American embassy in Hanoi, and nine people who were part of a Defense Department advance team preparing for Harris's visit.

While at least some of the injured U.S. personnel were medevaced out of the country, Harris was unharmed and continued her trip to Hanoi after a three-hour delay in Singapore.

  • Statements of White House, FBI, Office of the Director of National Intelligence to 60 Minutes

Symptoms of Havana Syndrome often include nausea, dizziness, migraines, and problems with vision and hearing that can persist over a long period of time. While U.S. officials cannot confirm what causes it, experts 60 Minutes has spoken with believe the incidents involve targeted sonic or microwave attacks.

60 Minutes has been investigating these attacks for more than five years. For the latest report, which aired on the broadcast this week, producers Michael Rey and Oriana Zill de Granados teamed up with Christo Grozev, an investigative journalist who currently leads investigative work for The Insider. Grozev is well-known for his investigation into the poisoning of the late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny.

As 60 Minutes investigated the Hanoi incident, a source suggested that the Vietnamese themselves had been given some kind of technology that may have caused the "Havana Syndrome" attack. According to the source, the Vietnamese may have been told to use the technology to listen in on the Americans ahead of Harris's trip — but they may not have known this the technology could harm the people they were using it on.

In his research, Grozev found a document that seems to indicate this theory may be correct.

Five months before Harris's visit to Hanoi, an email was sent to the Security Council of Russia, the body of top Russian officials who head the country's defense and security agencies.

According to Grozev, a document within the email shows that Russian intelligence lobbied for and received permission from President Vladimir Putin to provide exclusive technology to Vietnamese security services. Among the list of recommended technologies to be shared were "LRAD acoustic emitters" and "short-wave equipment for scanning the human body."

  • Havana Syndrome mystery continues as a lead military investigator says bar for proof was set impossibly high

LRAD, which stands for "long-range acoustic device," is a military-grade sonic weapon that discharges a targeted beam of sound at extremely high volume. An LRAD device was used to thwart a pirate attack on a cruise ship in 2005, and since then, the U.S. military has used the devices to send warnings in the field, such as cautioning people away from an Army base perimeter. But when left on at its highest volume, some LRAD systems can produce a sound pressure level of 162 decibels . The human pain threshold is about 130 decibels .

Based on his research, Grozev said he suspects Russia is sending weapons technology like this, which may be used in Havana Syndrome attacks, to foreign governments.

"I believe that Russia is assisting other governments with some operations that those governments may want to do on their own, and in this way establishing loyalty from these governments for future operations that Russia might need on their territory," Grozev told 60 Minutes.

Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Greg Edgreen ran an investigation for the Defense Intelligence Agency into anomalous health incidents, which have been referred to as Havana Syndrome attacks because they were first reported by American officials based in the U.S. embassy in Cuba in 2016. He told 60 Minutes he also believes Russians were involved in the 2021 attack in Vietnam.

"They saw us getting closer and closer to Cuba, and they wanted to stop it…" Edgreen said. "Then they tried to follow up and do the same thing with Vietnam, another long-term strategic ally to Hanoi, by disrupting Vice President Kamala Harris' trip to Vietnam."

While running the military investigation into anomalous health incidents, Edgreen said the Pentagon supported his investigation into whether Russia was behind the attacks. But the Trump and Biden administrations set the bar for proof impossibly high, he said.

Grozev believes the U.S. government would require a very high threshold of certainty before they could acknowledge the Kremlin's role — because of what will happen if they do.

"Once you admit that this happened, it is a Pandora['s] box," Grozev said. "It requires you to confront the fact that you have your arch enemy acting against your own people, your own intelligence workers, on your territory, and this is nothing other than a declaration of war."

The video above was produced by Brit McCandless Farmer and edited by Scott Rosann.

Brit McCandless Farmer is a digital producer for 60 Minutes, where her work has been recognized by the Webby, Gracie, and Telly Awards. Previously, Brit worked at the CBS Weekend Evening News, CBS This Morning, CNN, and ABC News.
